EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome Heather Young, Editor
Confession time: I’m an impulsive decorator. I start a project with great intentions to take my time to plan and research the best buys and solutions before jumping in, but many years (and a few properties) down the line, I’m ready to accept that’s not my decorating nature. Some might call it impatience (my OH definitely does), but I’m going to embrace it and repackage it as enthusiasm.

If painting is involved, why not try the Colour Picker tool we’ve created with Dulux for idealhome.co.uk? H&M’S DISPLAY FURNITURE So, you’ve got your beautiful objets and coffee table books to show off, but there’s not much space left for your cuppa! H&M Home has it solved with its new storage pieces – the coffee table, side table and wall cabinet will keep your cherished keepsakes safe while on display for all to see.
The world’s first 100% recyclable mattress Barker and Stonehouse and mattress specialist Harrison Spinks embarked on a two year project together to create Loop – a luxurious mattress that’s made from 100% recyclable components. Motivated by the fact that 100,000 mattresses are sent to landfill in the UK each week, the construction of mattresses often makes any recyclable materials, such as steel, too difficult to extract. The Loop mattress is free from glue, foam and flame-retardant chemicals, so once the mattress has come to the end of its life, customers can send it back to Harrison Spinks to be taken apart, where each of the components are then recycled and reused, from the steel springs to the fabric and fillings.

ith retirement nearing, Emma and Stefan Kruger knew exactly where they wanted to settle down. ‘We looked for a home in a beautiful setting, close to mountains and vineyards and farmlands, that we would be able to share with our grown children and extended family,’ says Emma. Franschhoek is a historic town in the foothills of the Wemmershoek Mountains, surrounded by farmland, vineyards, nature reserves and peaks. Part slow-paced small town, part buzzing hotspot; it’s the dream location for a retirement property. The couple decided to find a plot and build their own house. The area of land they bought is relatively small by South African standards, but the couple maximised the space with a building that hugs the boundary in a U-shape, opening onto a pool and patio. ‘We decided on a modern barn-style interpretation of the Cape Dutch tradition,’ says Emma. It’s compact, but feels spacious thanks to seven-metre-high ceilings and huge windows. Stefan was keen to incorporate smart, but unseen, tech. Double glazing ensures that the interior is blissfully quiet. The well-insulated house regulates its own temperature, with solar-heated water, underfloor heating, solar-powered electricity and wood-burners. Emma enlisted the help of Mia Widlake, an interior designer at Johannesburg-based company Studio 19. ‘Mia champions timeless design and honest materials, which won me over,’ says Emma. She and Stefan wanted the house to be ‘bulletproof’ – uncluttered, and full of tough materials that meant there would be no need to be precious about the decor. A restful palette of charcoal, bitter grey-green and milky white reflects the surrounding landscape. Emma and Stefan are now deeply settled. ‘We love the tranquility of this area,’ she says. ‘Although we also love the racket the guinea fowl make in the vineyards at dusk when we walk into town for dinner!’

The casual talk became more serious about five years ago, when the couple decided to take the plunge. FIRST FLOOR previous home, so we had to move around a lot between a holiday cottage and my parents’ house.’ Once the foundations were laid and the steels were in, the couple felt they were finally seeing a house emerge. The walls were built up to roof height, which took until Christmas 2018. ‘We had a rough idea of the cost at design stage, but this increased dramatically as a result of Brexit. We had to amend the design in several ways, like reducing some of the glazing, to get back on budget.’ The roof and glazing were next. ‘This was key to our design, as we wanted to enjoy the beautiful views from every room,’ says Holly. With the bones of the house complete, attention turned to internal finishes. ‘I found inspiration from Grand Designs, as well as on Instagram where I have documented the build, @theplyhouse. It was a hectic few months getting the house to a liveable state, but we finally moved in mid-September… alongside the painters who still had a few days’ work to go!’

The story of the build
BEFORE The foundations have been laid and the first stage of the house’s steelwork is being fitted
‘To stay on budget, we installed Ikea cabinets with Askersund fronts and our builders fitted the bespoke shelves as additional wall storage’
DECEMBER 2018 A site visit from the family when all blockwork was finished to roof height and insulation stacked ready to install ‘As it’s north facing, we could use lots of glazing in the living space without it getting too hot in summer‘
JANUARY 2019 The first floor is completed ready for the internal walls to be erected – they are shown marked out in red on the floor
JULY 2019 The plywood staircase and wall panels – a key feature – are fitted at the end of the build, to avoid them getting damaged IDEALHOME.CO.UK | MARCH 2021

“
I instantly fell in love with the apartment, it has such a warm and friendly vibe. It’s relaxed and happy here
”
he Wood family’s move to this flat in the Stockholm suburb of Enskede was prompted by the birth of their third child. ‘We needed more space,’ says Sofia. ‘We were living around the corner so we already knew the neighbourhood. ‘I fell for the apartment immediately. This building dates from 1921 and is so well preserved – classic but simple, and slightly romantic. It has big windows, rustic wooden floors and ornate woodwork. We were desperate for an outside space and there’s a beautiful green garden, where the residents grow vegetables and flowers. We have barbecues there and socialise with the neighbours, and there are lots of kids about. ‘Inside, every room was painted white, so we repainted with softer colours. It’s such a fun and easy way to change a whole room. We also took out built-in storage from the four small bedrooms. All the woodwork was in bad shape, so we restored that, too. ‘If I did it all over again, I’d take things a bit slower. We’ve already started to redo things, but better this time, like putting wallpaper in the master bedroom. I tend to be very quick in my decisions and often think I can do everything on my own. That has got me into trouble before (like when I thought I could repaint the kitchen cabinets one weekend, on a whim!). So now I try to be less impulsive. Moodboards really help with this. It’s worth taking the time to put them together, to give a clear sense of where you’re going with the decor. Our old place had an open-plan kitchen and living room, and I’m pleased with two separate spaces now! I cook for a living and I used to feel I was making a mess of the whole apartment. Here, it’s just the kitchen that’s mayhem! I wouldn’t say that this home has changed our lifestyle, but it has made everything easier.’ Sofia shares her recipes on Instagram @sofia_wood.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY... Designers and stylists share their views ■ ‘Many modern acrylic paints are made from plastic with chemicals added to make them stick to walls and dry quickly,’ says Emma Bulmer, director at Edward Bulmer. ‘Their manufacturing process is also carbon intensive, and waste acrylic paint needs to be consigned to a licensed tip. Fortunately, there is a new generation of paints made from natural materials, using a process that is not polluting. Natural paints are also good for buildings as they let the walls breathe, which helps improve indoor air quality.’ ■ ‘Eco paints that contain virtually no chemicals make for a much healthier environment as they give off fewer fumes, both during painting and long after the paint is on the wall,’ says Cathryn Helsby, marketing manager, Earthborn. ‘You also don’t have to compromise on aesthetics. When Earthborn first started, eco paints were likened to limewash, which lacks strong colours and had poor opacity. This is no longer the case for eco paint.’ ■ ‘While many paints claim to be eco, very few actually are,’ says Emma Bulmer. ‘For walls, look for natural emulsion, clay paint and limewash. Red flag ingredients include PVA, PVC, acrylic, alkyds, glycol ethers (GEs), benzin and phthalates.’ ■ ‘Brushes are easier to clean, with no need for solvents. Look out for packaging, too; metal tins can be recycled repeatedly, as opposed to plastic,’ says Charlotte Cosby, head of creative, Farrow & Ball. ■ ‘Try a tester pot to check that your paint of choice is a highly pigmented product with good coverage,’ says Helen Shaw, director at Benjamin Moore. ‘You will use less of a paint with good coverage, plus small differences between the performance of two paint brands will be eclipsed by the negative environmental impact of having to apply extra coats or repaint after only a few years.’ ■ ‘You can’t scrub natural paint with chemicals or abrasive products, but you can wash walls and woodwork with a cloth to remove marks,’ says Emma Bulmer. ‘Pencil and pen are always difficult to remove and will require a repaint.’

uckily we were living nearby, so we spotted this property as soon as it hit the market,’ says Gemma. ‘It had the space we wanted and was in the village we’d dreamed of moving to. We loved its façade and knew we could preserve that, while sympathetically improving the interior.’ Gemma didn’t waste any time getting started. ‘I’m not one to live in a house for a year and think about it. I had a vision and I just wanted to crack on,’ she says. Able to stay in their previous home for eight months, the couple employed a project manager for the first few months while the house was gutted. ‘They helped us find an architect and a builder, and once the project was under way and things were going smoothly, we took over managing the renovation ourselves.’ The steel-framed windows installed along the back wall of the kitchen and dining area are the perfect aesthetic solution for the house. ‘They acknowledge the 1930s period, retaining the house’s character, while adding a contemporary twist,’ says Gemma. The loft had already been converted, but the layout was awkward, so the couple decided to extend above the new dining area, and to change the traditional hip roof to a gable end. They then moved the staircase and dormer window to create more space in the bedroom, as well as to give them a shower room. ‘Navin was calm throughout, but I did get quite anxious at times. At one point there was no back or roof on the house. It did make me question what on earth we had done!’ says Gemma, who shares photos of the renovations on Instagram @my_midcenturymakeover.

HOW JESSICA DID IT ‘The old kitchen wasn’t our style and we needed more space. Extending to create a big, eat-in family kitchen was the obvious answer. We worked with Evey at Hands-on Design (handsondesign.com) to decide our wish list and what we could afford. We wanted a modern design, but one with a bit of drama. When Evey suggested a green kitchen we recoiled in horror, but we fell in love with the idea when she showed us an example on Pinterest. As well as space for a large extending dining table that seats ten, the kitchen is practical with hard-wearing materials like the Silestone worktop. Plenty of storage was important and we’ve created extra cupboards under the seating, around the window, and in the island. The work took 12 weeks and cost £50,000.’

HOW JESS AND MARK DID IT ‘The original space was an unattractive muddle of four rooms, which included a tiny galley kitchen with no proper cupboards and a broken cooker. I thought it was too much work to take on, but Mark saw the potential. We knocked down the internal walls and conservatory and added an extension to create one large family space. We’d originally chosen four-metre wide bifold doors opening out to the garden, but as soon as we saw the gap for them, we knew it wasn’t big enough. The doors had already been ordered, and had to be cancelled, but luckily the replacement bifolds were the same price, so our budget wasn’t affected. Having considered modern, super-sleek handleless kitchens, I chose Shaker-style, as a traditional look was a better fit. However, we’ve made it a little more funky with gold accents and a white hob. The renovation, documented @mckenzie_interiorscapes, took two months, with the build costing around £25,000 and kitchen installation, £1,800.’ ‘I didn’t want a black hob, but after a bit of research I found a white one, which blends in to the island.’ Smeg White induction hob, £1,099, Appliance City

Make it work for you JESS’S CHOICE: MARBLE WORKTOPS
A beautiful, statement-making worksurface in Carrara or Calacatta will add a touch of luxury to your kitchen project Marble is one of the most popular choices for worktops right now, with gleaming white and veined surfaces trending in every style of kitchen.
Q
What’s the story? Marble has a luminosity and smoothness to the touch that sets it apart from other natural stones. It stays cool to the touch, which is why pastry chefs love it as it’s great for working dough.
Q
Are there disadvantages? Its porosity is one of the downsides, as it is susceptible to staining. Red wine or oil will seep in and are difficult to get out. It’s also easily damaged by acidic liquids, like lemon juice, and is prone to scratches.
Q
What about finishes? When it comes to worktops, there are two main types: honed, created by sanding the surface to give a matt finish, which won’t show any scratches so easily; or polished, which has a highly reflective, glossy surface that shows off the vibrancy of the stone and is less likely to stain.
Q
Is it expensive? Carrara marble is less expensive due to its slightly grey tone and feathery veins. You’ll pay more for luxury varieties such as Calacatta or Statuario, which have brighter white colourings and more pronounced veining.
The unique beauty of marble will transform a plain kitchen design
Q
How do I look after it? Marble worktops should be sealed professionally when first installed, then every six months or so. This doesn’t guarantee complete protection, so spills should be wiped up straight away, especially anything acidic. Clean marble using hot soapy water and a soft cloth, buffing dry to avoid water marks. Avoid lemon-scented detergents which can be acidic – go for a pH neutral cleaner like Lakeland’s Daily Granite & Marble Surface Cleaner Spray, £9.99 for 946ml.

athrooms are becoming more of a sanctuary than ever before, as we look for ways to relax and treat ourselves at home. But when it comes to their design, style, fixtures and fittings, there are some exciting new developments. Whether you plan to give yours a full makeover or a mini facelift, where should you start? We asked the expertsÉ WHAT ARE THE TRENDS IN SHOWER SCREENS? ‘Black-framed shower screens are hugely popular,’ says interior designer Carla Chases of Carla Designs. ‘They bring an element of high style to any bathroom.’ Lauren Foulds, product manager at Heritage Bathrooms, expects their popularity to continue: ‘We’re seeing more manufacturers bringing new options to the market.’ At the other extreme, minimal, barely-there screens are also trending, says Claire Lloyd, Editor of Home Building & Renovating. SHOULD I GO FOR A FITTED OR FREESTANDING BATH? ‘This really depends on the space you have to play with,’ advises Carla, who thinks both have their place. Lauren agrees: ‘When choosing a freestanding bath, you need to consider both the size of your bathroom and the look you are hoping to achieve.’ Claire adds, ‘Back-to-wall baths can give that look even in a compact space.’ I’VE HEARD COLOURED SANITARYWARE IS BACK… ‘Dare I say it, I’m not a fan,’ confesses Claire. ‘There will always be a market for it, though,’ says Lauren, ‘but garish colours are no longer trending – it’s more dramatic darker tones.’ ‘I wouldn’t recommend a complete colour overload,’ says Carla, ‘but a nice coloured feature sink can be lovely. My advice would be to opt for white sanitaryware – with the exception of a painted roll-top bath – then have fun with tiling and painting.’ WHAT’S TRENDING FOR TAPS AT THE MOMENT? Chrome remains popular, but as Lauren explains, ‘we’re also seeing a growing trend for more traditional

LAUREN FOULDS HERITAGE BATHROOMS finishes such as vintage gold.’ Black continues to be in demand: ‘It looks particularly striking paired with a black-framed shower screen,’ says Claire. ‘Copper and rose gold seem to be old news,’ adds Carla, ‘with brass and black a funky alternative to simple chrome. Look out for polished nickel – it’s a softer alternative to brass.’ Lauren reveals basin mixers are more popular than basin tap pairs: ‘We’re seeing customers shift away from the more traditional two-hole sanitaryware.’ WHAT ABOUT SHAPES – WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN SANITARYWARE? ‘Thanks to recent advances in manufacturing, we’re seeing a rise in longer straight edges and harder
corners which work really well in a contemporary bathroom,’ says Lauren. ‘In a more traditional space, curved edges on statement pieces offer a softer look.’ I’M LOOKING FOR TILES, BUT WHAT COLOURS, PATTERNS AND FORMATS SHOULD I CHOOSE THAT I WON’T TIRE OF? ‘Choose something you really love and that represents you,’ advises Carla. ‘Don’t worry about trends.’ Lauren believes we are getting bolder; ‘Following a year where people were forced to spend so much time at home, more of us are choosing bold, forgetting the neutral “show home” look and making our homes our own – and IDEALHOME.CO.UK | MARCH 2021

tiles can really help achieve this. We are also seeing bolder choices in marble, with customers using it in abundance.’ Claire agrees, suggesting hexagonal or metro tiles laid in a herringbone pattern as a great way of adding personality with plain-coloured tiles. ‘Or for a more timeless look, go large format with fewer grout lines,’ she adds. WHAT ABOUT OTHER SURFACES – WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN OR USED THAT’S WORKED REALLY WELL? ‘Designers are suddenly going to town with every surface possible, as more and more fabulous products grace the market,’ says Carla. Claire adds ‘Ancient traditional finishes, such as tadelakt (a Moroccan plaster finish) and Venetian plaster are gaining traction. They offer a durable, waterproof and grout-free look, although they can be expensive to achieve and ideally require the expertise of a

professional. We’ve also seen bold wallpapers used behind clear acrylic panels – but be careful about where these are positioned.’ I NEED LOTS OF STORAGE IN MY BATHROOM. WHAT’S THE BEST BIG-BUDGET AND LOW-BUDGET OPTION? ‘Depending on how tidy you are, floating shelves can be a nice economical – and smart – option,’ says Carla, ‘but if you’ve got the budget then built-in carpentry is always best. I also love the use of recessed alcoves in bathrooms as not only do they provide a good place to put/display things, you can also incorporate lighting to make them a feature. Avoid placing lots of small pieces of freestanding storage around a bathroom as it always ends up looking messy and cluttered.’ If you’re looking to update sanitaryware, then Claire would always swap a pedestal basin for a vanity unit.

WHAT’S NEW WHEN IT COMES TO BATHROOM LIGHTING? ‘Bathroom lighting is all about creating an experience,’ says Lauren, with customers buying something as simple as an illuminated mirror, which casts a subtler light within the room, helping to create a tranquil atmosphere. ‘Dimmers are also a hugely popular choice,’ says Carla, ‘as are some form of PIR sensor lights. These are generally low-level lighting that will just turn on automatically when you enter the bathroom – fantastic for night-time visits as you don’t have to fumble for the switch.’ WHEN SPACE IS LIMITED, IS IT BEST TO SQUEEZE IN A SMALL BATH AND SHOWER OR GO FOR A BIG WALK-IN SHOWER ONLY? ‘Walk-in showers remain a great solution for compact bathrooms and en suites — maximising use of the floor space available while adding a touch of luxury. However, consider resale — if this is the only bathroom within the house, then opt for a shower over a bath. Lauren adds, ‘Following the pandemic, customers are looking at self-care and wellness in a new light, and with the variety of fitted and freestanding bath sizes available, a small tub shouldn’t be ruled out if you are partial to a relaxing soak.’ ANY OTHER TECH OR BATHROOM INNOVATIONS WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT? ‘Bathroom products never stop evolving – 15 years ago the soft-close toilet seat was the latest technology, now it’s expected even on entry-level products,’ says Lauren. ‘We’re also seeing an increased use of tech in digital showering and sensor taps, as well as clever lighting.’ There are other advances too, as Claire explains: ‘For those looking to save energy, then wastewater heat recovery could be one area to consider. These simple (albeit, at present, rather expensive) units sit beneath the shower or bath and recover heat from the wastewater. The recovered heat is then used to warm the incoming cold-water feed. Biophilic design – the notion of creating a connection between the natural world and our interiors – remains a popular concept. Give some thought to making best use of natural light. For those taking on an extension or loft conversion project, consider adding a rooflight directly above a shower or bath for a glimpse of the sky, without (hopefully) compromising privacy.’ ARE WHITE TOWELS AND BATHMATS OLD NEWS? ‘A glass roof made all the difference’ A desire for space and light was at the root of Johnny and Jo Lovett’s transformation of their dated Victorian house
BEFORE
AFTER
Though the house wasn’t in dire need of repair, Johnny and Jo were keen to enlarge the small kitchen
A
s part of the renovation of their Victorian house, Jo and Johnny planned to transform the kitchen and dining area by adding a contemporary glazed extension. ‘I wanted a side extension with a glazed roof,’ says Johnny. ‘One of our other goals was to create a view through the house, so we could see the kids playing in the living room at the front.’ PROGRESS ON SITE Once the design was finalised, the extension sailed through planning. ‘It was a complete back-to-brick renovation and extension, so we moved in with parents while the work was being carried out,’ says Johnny, whose company Morningside Construction (morningside.group) took care of the build.. The interior design was handled by Minnie & Grouse (minnieandgrouse.com). ‘They were skilled at bringing me back to the original brief and keeping me on track.’ The project went smoothly, though there were some lockdownrelated delays towards the end of the programme. ‘We were struggling to get hold of materials as quickly as we normally might,’ says Johnny. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED Johnny and Jo are over the moon with how the project has turned out. ‘We haven’t been able to invite friends round yet because of Covid, but the kitchendiner will be a great place for chatting and getting together once we can.’
The extension makes use of the full width of the plot, providing the young family with the extra space they need

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT…
GRIDDED GLAZING Zophia Amey, director at Minnie & Grouse Interiors (minnieandgrouse.com), shares her top tips
1
IT TRANSFORMS THE SPACE This type of glazing adds character and a whole new dimension without compromising on light or space. Doors like this add a touch of wow factor.
2 A glazed partition can be closed to form a divide between the kitchen-diner and the rest of the living space
WHAT I’VE LEARNED
“
I’m a bit of a control freak, so I struggle to let go of smaller design details at times. Working with a professional interior design practice really helped me to stay on track
120

”
3
IT CAN ADAPT TO YOUR STYLE Johnny and Jo chose hardwood frames for their doors, but you can use metal if you want to go for the industrial style. You can alter the width of the gridding, too – thinner grids create a sleeker look, while wider glazing bars give an industrial aesthetic.
4
IT CAN BE PAINTED Timber gridded glazing offers an economical alternative to metal and can be spray painted any colour. Johnny and Jo used RAL colour 7021.
5
IT CAN BE SPACE SAVING If you are tight on space for external doors to open in- or outwards, sliding doors that glide along a track offer a smart space-saving solution.
WORDS REBECCA FOSTER PHOTOGRAPHS MORNINGSIDE CONSTRUCTION
IT MAXIMISES LIGHTFLOW Gridded glazing can be used for internal partitions as well as for exterior doors. Glass dividers allow the light to flow right through.
GET MORE FROM YOUR GARDEN We’ve come to learn the immense value of our outdoor spaces, so whether it be a complete overhaul of a design or a few considered additions, your garden can give you even more enjoyment in 2021

The outdoor room With home working becoming more widespread, setting up an office space in the garden could be a sound investment. In most cases you don’t need planning permission, as long as it’s not being used to sleep in, and it only takes between one and five days to complete. It will be far less disruptive than a loft conversion, and a well thought out design can really enhance the look of your garden. Green Retreats offers gorgeous outdoor pods that can be designed to include a work area as well as a space for families to relax and spend time together. WHERE TO BUY Prices start at around £15,000, greenretreats.co.uk
GARDEN INSPIRATION
Get multi-functional As we are spending more time at home, our gardens are being pushed to the limit, with people making the most of even small-scale urban garden spaces. When we have been relying on our homes as space for connecting, having the capacity for socialising with friends and family safely is essential. Outdoor kitchens are perfect for this. The fun doesn’t stop at barbecues, either – you can build up a whole kitchen area complete with a grill and pizza oven, as well as surfaces for food preparation. WHERE TO BUY Contemporary outdoor kitchen, Bowles & Wyer
Indulge your senses A garden that nourishes the soul is not just about looks – scent, sound, movement and texture all play a role too. Combine touchy-feely grasses such as Stipa tenuissima with scented Oriental lilies and clothe pergolas in wisteria and roses to perfume the air. Add texture with the furry leaves of Artemesia and Stachys byzantina, and create a boundary of bamboo (in pots). On windy days, its soothing sound will mask the noise of traffic. WHERE TO BUY Wisteria sinensis var. sinensis f. ‘Alba’, 2ltr pot, £34.99, Waitrose Garden
Bring in statement foliage for borders If your garden looks overly soft in summer and rather bare in winter, it could be that it lacks structure. Incorporating some simple topiary or evergreen shrubs lends pleasing solidity to a border – think of them as forming the backbone or frame within which the flowers can then bloom, as in this urban garden designed by Bowles & Wyer. It’s important to make the ‘lines’ of a garden well-defined – so keep lawn edges neatly trimmed and use smart wood or box hedging to edge borders and pathways. GARDEN INSPIRATION
Staying neutral If you’re planning on a spot of hard landscaping this year, the palette for outdoor materials should be clean and simple. Bright and bold colours aren’t conducive to the mindful state of calm which we now look to our gardens to provide. Neutral tones soothe the senses and make the ideal canvas on which to build your planting and allow the colours of your chosen planting scheme to sing out against the background. Opt for a limited palette of greys, taupes and creams for hard landscaping. Pops of colour can then be added with outdoor accessories as well as zingy plant choices. WHERE TO BUY This calming city garden is designed by Bowles & Wyer. Find large outdoor planters at Dobbies Garden Centres
Crops in pots No longer the preserve of larger gardens, vegetable plots are now appearing in nearly every outdoor space, whether this is a walled kitchen garden or simple herbs growing in pots on an urban balcony. Almost every vegetable will have a compact variety for container growing so people with little space needn’t miss out! And as we want to find more ways to spend time outdoors and in the garden why not try your hand at growing from seed? It’s much cheaper and very rewarding. WHERE TO BUY Chives; rosemary; sweet basil, all 1ltr, £4.99; chilli plant, £3.99, all Dobbies Garden Centres
Pick for pollinators The events of 2020 were a humbling experience, changing our perspective and leading to an increased appreciation of the natural world around us. Seeing wildlife flourish has meant many of us want to make better decisions on what is not only right for us, but better for the planet, too. Selecting your plants for their appeal to pollinators is a step towards creating a greater harmony with nature. A wildflower meadow patch will enhance your outdoor space and will be extremely easy to care for. Or choose easy-to-grow perennials for your borders, such as verbena, which will bring in bees and native butterflies. Perennials have the added advantage that the flowers will return the following year – some will also self-seed. WHERE TO BUY Wildflower Meadow Mix, from £7.50, Sarah Raven

Nothing completes a garden like the serene sound of a water feature and there are plenty of affordable options that are easy to set up, including solar-powered varieties. Even a minimalist water bowl feature brings a sense of calm, making the garden a more inviting place to sit and contemplate. Divide and rule Creating different areas or ‘rooms’ in your garden is a popular trick that adds interest and allows you to incorporate different styles without things looking too busy. Pergolas, trellis divides, archways, walls, hedges and doors can all be used to divide even a small garden into two or more areas, each with their own individual mood or uses. These devices will smooth the transition from one area to the next, while concealing then revealing them, helping to create a sense of intrigue and enchantment. The ‘secret garden’ effect works really well in urban plots, where it’s more unexpected. WHERE TO BUY For a large range of teak garden furniture, try Bridgman IDEALHOME.CO.UK | MARCH 2021

ROSIE’S STYLE? Turn to page 130 to shop the look
Welcome to my garden Rosie Money-Coutts loved renovating her flat, but the garden was too wild to tackle alone.
THE PLOT An 8x25m garden in south London.
THE CHALLENGE To create privacy and seclusion within a big, overlooked garden, without losing any light.

I’ve been peeking over my neighbour’s fence with rose bed envy for years – now I can be proud of my own!

hree years ago Rosie MoneyCoutts left a fast-paced job in central London to set up her own company (papr.com). When the dust had settled and her business was thriving, she finally had the time and budget to do something with her large, previously unloved garden. It had fallen to the bottom of her list of home improvements because she had no idea where to start. ‘I had bifold doors fitted out to the garden and suddenly had an unencumbered view of a big, neglected jungle,’ says Rosie. She entrusted the team at TJG Gardens (tjg-gardens.com)

with the task of taming it. With a taste for simplicity and calming colours in her interiors, Rosie was up for doing something different and more adventurous outside. In terms of the space, she wanted a rear terrace to catch the evening light and provide an entertaining area. Laurel hedging planted alongside gave it an instant sense of privacy. The rear wall was imposing so it was painted a natural green colour. A bright, winding path was installed from the front to the back and two Acer palmatums were planted to help the flow of the garden and provide interest later in the year.

The dining area feels secluded and is flanked by Laurel nobilis, while Ceanothus brings a healthy dose of colour. Painting the wall at the back in a soft shade of green has helped it to blend in with the lush planting that surrounds it.
Just beyond the bifold doors lies a spot where Rosie can catch the early morning sun next to her favourite tree. A simple bistro set from Argos fits perfectly in this compact corner, which is ideal for a leisurely start to the day with a cup of herbal tea.

ubbing shoulders with neighbouring Suffolk, this unspoilt patch of north Essex countryside, Constable Country, is so-called after the artist John Constable who lived among the rolling fields and water meadows. And these bucolic landscapes that have changed little in over 200 years are glorious to explore on foot, by bike or boat all year round. Visit 16th-century Bridge Cottage at nearby Flatford Mill on the River Stour, once owned by Constable’s family. There’s a small exhibition and tearoom with a riverside terrace. You’ll also discover the
location that was the inspiration for The Hay Wain, the artist’s most famous painting, which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year. Make a weekend of it by staying at Milsoms, a boutique country-house hotel in Dedham Vale channelling luxurious comfort with an urban edge.
