ome… our sanctuary and our refuge, particularly at this time of year when the temperature drops and the days get shorter. On goes the heating, out come the blankets and throws, the candles are lit and the focus is on warmth and comfort. The Cosy Home is the theme of this month’s Design My Space feature - the first in a new series in which we help you find looks you love and show how to put them together (page 19). Since moving house earlier this year, I’ve amassed a stack of inspirational images and design ideas from magazines and websites, boxes of fabric, tile and paint samples, and countless notes about where to source items such as door furniture and light switches. Despite working in the industry, when it comes to putting a decorating scheme together, I still find it difficult to know where to start! As well as showcasing trends and seasonal themes, Design My Space will demonstrate how creating moodboards can help clarify your ideas and narrow down your choices. Leading experts on everything from choosing paint colours to the importance of good lighting will be sharing their secrets. We hope you’ll find this helpful. It’s not just about hibernating indoors this month though. One of my most memorable get-togethers with friends wasn’t a formal dinner party but an outdoor feast in a field in the middle of winter. Gathered around a glowing fire in our hats, gloves and scarves, dining by starlight was truly magical and the food tasted all the more delicious for being cooked on the smoky flames. If you like the idea of doing something similar, see page 122. Enjoy the issue and see you next month…
LOUISE PEARCE Editor-in-chief
This month, it’s all about being warm and cosy – from the dreamy decorating ideas starting on page 19 to our Food & Fire feature on page 122, which takes feasting around a bonfire to a whole new level!

MEET THE MAKER SOPHIE SELLU OF GRAIN & KNOT
Woodland wonders Characterised by organic shapes and a satisfying solidity, Sophie Sellu’s whimsical wooden designs are completely captivating and almost otherworldly. Bearing the marks and ridges that speak of the handcrafting process, every piece is carved from reclaimed timber in Sophie’s south London garden studio. Material matters Being made redundant twice in two years was the push Sophie needed to pursue her creative side, and after attending a spoon carving and bushcraft workshop in 2013, Grain & Knot was born. ‘I like wood because it’s slow – not only is my work incredibly time consuming, but the piece of wood I’m carving could be older than me. Just as there’s no way to rush the growth, it’s important to take time over the final form too.’ Highly coveted To balance carving and making with all the other aspects of running a business, Grain & Knot has just one online shop update a month, where Sophie sells the fruits of her hard weeks of labour – they sell out fast, so you’ll have to be quick! grainandknot.com

SHOP SMALL Patterned wallpaper instantly brings a new look, but it’s also particularly effective at ‘zoning up’ parts of a room. Try papering an alcove, or the area surrounding your chosen space, to distinguish it from the rest of the room. Go one step further by papering a horizontal band across one whole wall – consider it the evolution of the feature wall! It’s a great use for leftover rolls, or a smart way to include a luxe paper without breaking the bank.

THIS MONTH IT’S ALL ABOUT HUNKERING DOWN INDOORS. WE TAKE TWO SEASONAL LOOKS – WARM NEUTRALS AND SIENNA TONES – AND SHOW YOU HOW TO PUT THEM TOGETHER
House Beautiful NOVEMBER 2020 19
LOOK ONE
Warm neutrals Nothing says winter retreat like cosy sheepskins and candlelit evenings. A calm colour palette and layers of sumptuous textiles are key to this look

STYLE FOR SERENITY The palette may be restrained, but everything else in this look should feel plentiful and abundant. O Heavy linen curtains look gorgeous and add to the cosiness as well as helping to exclude draughts and keep the heat in at night. O Drape lavish sheepskins and luxe wool throws over the backs of sofas, dining benches or at the end of your bed to add extra layers of texture.
Go all out to really boost the comfort factor – extra cushions will help make your space look warm and inviting and can be stowed in pretty baskets when not in use. O It’s worth investing in good quality materials. Not only will they last, they’ll also age beautifully and gain character over time – linens will get softer and jute rugs become lovingly worn, while rustic wool blankets will grow charmingly faded. O

MOODBOARD YOUR LOOK
Begin by gathering your favourite images from magazines and online pinboards such as Pinterest – you’ll see common themes and materials emerging. Using these images as reference, start pulling together samples of fabrics, paint and flooring onto a board to see how the different tones and textures will work together. Keep experimenting to build up your scheme. See housebeautiful.com/uk for our Moodboard Masterclass.
Pale-toned woods
set the scene for a soft overall effect – look for bleached oaks and washed pines, the lighter hues will sit beautifully with chalky white walls.
Tiling
should be natural and rustic, think plain porcelain with crackle glazes and tumbled finishes for the walls, and hardwearing limestone, sandstone or slate for the floor.
Sisal, seagrass or jute carpet and rugs come
in a variety of weave patterns to add subtle interest.

Texture is key to unlocking maximum cosiness and comfort in your home, and should be explored across every surface from flooring and upholstery to curtains and even walls. Tongue-and-groove panelling, for instance, is a
timeless choice that works beautifully as a backdrop. Sundbury dining table, from £850; Sundbury upholstered bench, from £595; Blom dining chair, £150; Charcoal check table linen, from £16; all Nordic House

A STYLIST’S GUIDE TO LAYERING IN THE BEDROOM Layering comes to the fore in the bedroom, and there are a few tricks that stylists follow to add a sumptuous and inviting look to a bed. Firstly, don’t be afraid to mix and match textures: here, soft crumpled linen sits alongside an alpaca wool throw, while a sheepskin cushion creates a relaxed look against a smart cotton headboard. Secondly, as long as you keep things tonal, you can explore a range of subtle patterns – in this instance, it’s rustic stripes, but other designs can work equally well.

‘It can seem simplest to use Brilliant White everywhere, but in most settings this shade will feel very harsh and bright,’ says Ruth Mottershead from the Paint & Paper Library. ‘Off-whites are much more subtle and effective, as they contain undertones of other colours, not only making them softer, but also more complementary to an existing scheme.’ Ruth offers the following guidelines: 1 Consider the other colours and existing tones within your room – for a warm scheme that already features pinks and dark woods, choose a white which has pink or red undertones.
Grasscloth matt emulsion, £45/2.5L, Claybrook
Frosted Dawn matt emulsion, £24.98/2.5L, Dulux
2 Generally speaking, south-facing rooms receive warmer light. For balance, you’ll want to choose a white with a blue undertone. North-facing rooms have a naturally starker light, so bring a sense of warmth with a yellow-based white shade. 3 Take into consideration the purpose of the room, as certain undertones can be better suited to different spaces. In a bedroom, for example, I would use warmer shades with a red or ochre base for cosiness and tranquillity.
Minim pure flat emulsion, £50/2.5L, Paint & Paper Library
4 In a scheme with lots of organic textures, such as oak floors and sisal carpets, a green-toned white works very well. Minim is one of our most versatile shades – it’s grey toned, so works perfectly with other neutrals and is suitably warming too.

A NOTE ON… LIGHTING FOR A COSY SPACE ‘Lighting has three distinct purposes,’ says Peter Bowles, founder of lighting design firm Original BTC. ‘Task lighting helps you perform specific jobs, mood lighting creates atmosphere, and accent lighting highlights areas of interest. Effective lighting should be built up in layers using a mixture of all three.’ Peter has the following advice:
Hector small dome table light, £175, Original BTC. Walls and table top painted in Old White; table legs in Honfleur; chalk paint, from £5.95/ 120ml; Annie Sloan FOR STORE DETAILS SEE WHERE TO BUY PAGE

1 A central pendant can serve as your main lighting, while floor and wall lamps will provide an additional layer of general lighting. Table lamps are ideal for illuminating more localised areas. 2 Materials also play a part. Bone china creates a warm glow, while ceramic lights illuminate smaller, more focused areas. Fabric lampshades are a solid option too – look out for conical shapes that direct the light down to avoid harsh direct light coming out from the top. 3 And finally, one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh your lighting is to check your bulbs. Always choose bulbs with a warm tone rather than stark white – and always LEDs, they are by far the most energy efficient.

LIGHT AND DARK The rich pigment in these colours means they look gorgeous in a light and airy scheme (left), while also holding their own within a darker, more moody room (above). O In a neutral design, just a small dose will make a big impact, so include across your accessories rather than on upholstery or walls, and keep the textures light, opting for linens and cottons.
If you’re committing to the dark side, painting the walls and woodwork the same deep hue creates a comforting cocooning effect. Maximising luxe textures will play to the strengths of these dramatic tones as well as building a cosy haven. O To keep the look and feel contemporary, minimise your use of pattern and prints to really let the colours do the talking – sleek upholstery and simple scatter cushions ensure a smart effect. O

‘Heavy hues can feel intimidating, but ask yourself – do you like it? Do you respond to these colours positively, and do they make you feel good?’ says Cassandra Ellis, founder of Atelier Ellis. She values instinct when it comes to rich, impactful shades, but there are practical considerations too. Cassandra also advises: 1 Observing the direction of light your room receives is one way of choosing
colour – and west-facing rooms will love these shades best – but also consider what’s outside. The light that reflects back into a room that faces the sea will be very different to the light in rooms that face trees or other buildings. 2 Dark colours don’t necessarily require a dominant black pigment – umber, red and
ochre pigments make for warmer colours that create a more inviting environment.
Tea & Toast matt emulsi on, £51/2 .5L, Ateli er Ellis
3 Soft pinks, warm whites and murky yellows all sit tonally with these hues, but
I love to think about contrasting colours that will bring terracotta hues to life. Brighter blues, fresh whites and leafy greens are unexpected but work beautifully. 4 Think outside the box – a heavy hue might work better used across woodwork
or your kitchen cabinets rather than on the walls. Going for a rich, moody shade across internal doors can also create a really smart look.

A STYLIST’S GUIDE TO MIXING MATERIALS IN THE KITCHEN Unlike elsewhere in the house, materials in the kitchen tend to be hard, such as wood and metal, and often ‘cold’, such as porcelain, marble and glass. However, it’s still possible to create a space that’s warm and cosy. Layering materials is key and the trick to styling them cohesively is scale, balance and the relationship between each element. If you have a rustic wood floor, for example, mirror the look with weathered wood dining chairs and vintage chopping boards. Echo the clean white of marble worktops with a marble-topped table and white ceramics. Glass is the ultimate versatile material – use for practical things such as storage as well as for decorative pieces like vases.

A NOTE ON… USING DARK TONES FOR A RESTFUL ROOM ‘The bedroom is where you want to maximise cosiness, and a dark palette can be perfect for this,’ says Amy Conn, design manager at Neptune. Earthy tones tend to be rich and cosseting. Using them in a continuous way, from skirting and radiators to walls and cornicing, has a wonderfully enveloping effect. Amy also advises:

1 This treatment works best in rooms where there isn’t much natural light – if a room is dark, using pale paint won’t make it lighter but actually murkier. Follow nature’s cue and embrace the shadows to play on the cosy, private and secluded character of the room. 2 For a contemporary feel, metal-framed glass furniture will almost disappear into the colour, leaving a chic silhouette of the frame. Traditional furniture will help for a richer look, though this doesn’t have to be dark wood – pale wood will provide texture and contrast. For fabrics, velvet is a must to add that extra layer of warmth and luxury.

azing around this calm and light-filled house, it’s a stretch to imagine the far less serene state it was in three years ago. ‘It was gutted and the roof had to come off, so, at one stage, it was just a shell,’ says interior designer Karena Clayton. This was part of a full-scale overhaul of this family home in south London, which included reconfiguring the layout and excavating the basement to carve out a new level. Karena was involved right from the start, collaborating with the architects and helping to secure a team of trusted builders. ‘My brief was to create contemporary spaces with lots of natural light, particularly in the basement,’ she explains. ‘Then, I added the wow factor in each room with colour, lighting and texture.’ Creating a link between the new basement level and the more Victorian spaces above was also important. ‘We added architraves and panelled doors downstairs so it’s in keeping with the rest of the property,’ Karena says. The back of the house has double-height glazing that extends from the basement to the ground floor, creating a sense of flow. But to

make the basement level feel welcoming, Karena had to think creatively. ‘It was originally conceived as a cinema, but it felt like a huge cavernous space,’ Karena says. To foster a sense of intimacy, she carved out more cosy areas within the room. Now, the first thing visitors see is a cantilevered fireplace on one side, and a TV on the other. She also added a bar under the stairs, while a glass bookcase separates the study, allowing natural light to flow in. ‘Each area has its own function while also feeling welcoming.’ The family wanted a sophisticated but neutral feel, so Karena chose a base of subtle greys. She then set about adding focal points, such as statement lighting, artworks and upholstery in deep blues, reds and yellows. Before working in interiors, Karena was a fabric designer, so it’s no surprise that textiles are one of her favourite ways to add interest. ‘For me, a home is all about layers of texture, combining finishes that work together,’ she says. In the living room, antiqued mirror glass works alongside a geometric rug and velvet armchairs while, in the kitchen, the island’s sawn-wood finish contrasts with concrete flooring – with the Bianca Eclipsia quartzite splashback adding further impact. ‘We were going to mount a cabinet on

the splashback, but decided to let the surface speak for itself.’ In the main bedroom, softer textures, such as a bespoke upholstered headboard, dominate the space. ‘We wanted hotel luxury in here,’ Karena says. With a project of this scale, there are bound to be hiccups and Karena remembers a major issue with the glazing. ‘The glass panes are six metres high, which meant the road had to be blocked off so they could be winched over the top of the house. Unfortunately, one pane cracked, so the process had to be repeated. It was worth the effort though,’ Karena says. Glass also adds to the dining area, where a glass balustrade runs around the void into the basement. This also had to be rethought – but for happier reasons. ‘Halfway through the project, the owners discovered they were expecting a baby, so we made the glass balustrade higher.’ The couple now have two young sons, and the home that blends space and light with cosier touches is enjoyed by them all. ‘It’s lovely knowing all the design touches have come together,’ says Karena with a smile. S
andra Coppin wasn’t looking to buy a country home when she first decided to take a peek at Ansty Plum. She had come across the mid-century Wiltshire house on an estate agent’s website and saw that it had been designed by architect David Levitt, alongside the famous Brutalist architects Alison and Peter Smithson. Yet there’s nothing Brutalist about Ansty Plum, which ties itself to a remarkable rural setting with particular grace and sensitivity. ‘I got in touch with the agents and said I’d like to see the property, but failed to mention I wasn’t interested in buying it,’ says Sandra, who is also an architect with her own practice, Coppin Dockray. ‘I thought it would be a fun day out. So on a very cold Valentine’s Day we came to look around and have a pub lunch. But Nico and I fell in love with it immediately, and put in a bid that day.’ The house does have a clear and seductive charm. Ansty Plum was originally commissioned by Roger Rigby, who worked with the legendary structural engineering firm Arup. The early 1960s property sits under a dramatic mono-pitch roof that mirrors the natural gradient of the hillside on which it perches. The lower level contains an open-plan living space, with a long bank of windows looking out across the valley and towards the medieval church and manor house opposite. An exposed framework of Douglas fir complemented by rugged brick walls gives the house an organic simplicity. On the upper level, situated towards the rear of the building, there’s a mezzanine main bedroom, a bathroom and second bedroom, which is currently used by Sandra’s daughters, Eva and Anna. ‘The house has an innate modesty and it’s all the better for it,’ says Sandra. ‘There’s a limited palette of materials and they have a real character and honesty to them. Everything here has to work very hard to justify its existence.’ Once they had owned the house for 10 years, Sandra and Nico came to the realisation that it would need a considerable amount of work to turn it into a home that could be used through all the seasons. ‘It was almost uninhabitable for much of the year because it was so cold,’ says Sandra. The roof was leaking and the cold winters were cracking the brickwork, while the studio [a separate building in the garden] had crumbled to the point of being
DINING AREA Thanks to a run of huge windows that frame a view of the valley, this sunny open-plan space has a real connection to the outside. Sandra designed the table using leftover zinc from the project, while Nico bought the vintage school chairs many years ago KITCHEN Bringing the building’s heritage into the update, Sandra incorporated the original stainless-steel worktop in the new kitchen. The unit fronts are recycled timber from old chemistry lab benches

semi-derelict. Fortunately, Sandra and her practice have plenty of restoration experience, with a portfolio that includes a careful update of Sandra and Nico’s own 1930s London apartment at architect Berthold Lubetkin’s Highpoint II building in Highgate. High-spec double-glazing was installed throughout and underfloor heating fitted in beneath a new stone floor in the main living area. The kitchen was upgraded and slim-fit modern appliances slotted into the modest pantry beneath the stairs, which wrap around a small service core. And in the main bedroom, Sandra created a home office in miniature tucked behind the bed. But throughout the renovation process, she was careful to preserve the original character of the house and retain the many space-saving fitted features. ‘One thing that has really improved since the 1960s is lighting, so we used modern lighting to enhance the properties of the building, as well introducing a golden light to make us feel snug in winter,’ says Sandra. The studio, meanwhile, needed a partial rebuild and a new roof. Sandra took the opportunity to add a micro extension that now houses a shower room, which features a picture window framing a view of the hillside, while the rest of the building serves as a guest bedroom with a small study alongside. With the main house being so openplan, the studio has a special allure for the whole family, with everyone staking a claim. Outside, Sandra and Nico have been restoring the garden, which also contains the outline of an abandoned and unfinished cottage that forms a low wall around the garden pond. A winding concrete pathway and ramp forms a processional entry route to Ansty Plum. Sandra and Nico have concentrated on planting indigenous plants, vegetables, ferns and fruit trees that echo the site’s history as an orchard. Warm and inviting, the house and studio are now used all year round. ‘What I most enjoy about being here is that everything feels the opposite of our urban life in London,’ says Sandra. ‘The children have more freedom and everything else feels different as well: our activities, our way of thinking, the way we cook. We spend a lot of time outside here. For me, the place feels ancient and modern at the same time. It’s an extraordinary and unique setting.’ HB For architecture services, visit Sandra’s practice, Coppin Dockray Architecture & Design at coppindockray.co.uk
CHILDREN’S BUNKROOM One of the home’s few wholly separate spaces, the bunkroom opens out onto an upper level garden terrace and is bathed in light. Bespoke beds in Douglas fir are wrapped in Wallace Sewell blankets, while the sea lion picture was bought by Sandra’s daughters in a shop at Helsinki Central railway station. hen Scott and Camilla Trindle moved into their new home – a Georgian terraced house – in 2016, they realised that, for all its original character and period features, it wasn’t without its drawbacks. ‘The kitchen was small and not suited to our lifestyle, and the property was in need of refurbishment,’ explains Scott. The couple were keen to have a larger, more sociable kitchen and dining space with a better connection to the garden, and more space to suit their growing family, and they also needed a new bathroom. However, any renovation work would have to take into account the couple’s keenness to retain the building’s original Georgian character. Fortuitously, they lived close to architect Stuart Archer of Archer & Braun. Having met through neighbours, Scott and Camilla were able to take a look around Stuart’s own recently refurbished house and extension, and decided they’d like to work with the company to redevelop their own home. Essentially, they were looking for a

recognisably British feel to the design. ‘The striking concrete extension was a nod to mid-century British architects, who took French architect Auguste Perret’s Béton Brut (a term relating to raw concrete) and adopted it as their own – this led to the movement known as Brutalism,’ explains Stuart. ‘The other idea involved paring the design back to create a more timeless feel, which was achieved by omitting items you’d expect to see on an extension - coping, downpipes, cills, lights, reveals and frames.’ The architects managed the project from start to finish, which involved undertaking detail design (including the kitchen, bathroom and joinery), appointing the contractor and managing the project on site. It also entailed obtaining planning permission, which was more challenging than first anticipated. At the time of the build, there were no other extensions on the street, so there was no planning precedent. Coupled with the fact that the property is locally listed and in a Conservation Area, as well as the back of the house being visible from another street, it was very challenging to get permission for

a striking contemporary design. However, the architects convinced the planners by proposing a high quality design that looks visibly different to the existing building. Following the nine-month build, during which Scott and Camilla stayed with family and occasionally attended site meetings, what finally emerged was a new extension featuring an open-plan kitchen and dining space that seamlessly transitions from inside to out via sliding doors with narrow frames. The floor finish is exposed concrete that has been sanded to show the aggregate in the material, echoing the external cladding. New features include a built-in bench finished in teak reclaimed shelving from Eton College, a range cooker, cast-iron handles, a ceramic sink and silver nickel taps. The bathroom was reconfigured to accommodate a washing machine, dryer and storage, with traditional panelling introduced to match that elsewhere in the house. The same reclaimed teak that features in the kitchen was used to create a surround for the bath. Structural interventions in the existing house were kept to a minimum in order

‘It’s changed almost everything about how we live’ to stay loyal to the property’s character, with only minor changes made to the interior spaces. The sitting rooms, bedroom and bathroom were retained and an old dining space was turned into a piano room/playroom, where the sill of the existing window was lowered to create a doorway, giving access to the kitchen and a view of the garden. When it came to the material finishes, the original wood floors and panelling were updated with a new colour palette by Little Greene, while bespoke joinery has created additional storage for the couple. The result has been transformative for Scott and Camilla. ‘Previously, the kitchen and living areas were separate, so cooking was isolated, and we spent much less time together. Now it’s a much more social space where we can cook and chat.’ There’s also a better relationship with the garden, where we have a new barbecue and pizza oven. ‘It’s tricky to put our finger on specifics, but it’s changed almost everything about how we live in the house. It wasn’t an easy process, but it was worthwhile in the end – and we’d definitely do it again!’ HB Find out more at archerandbraun.com 70 housebeautiful.com/uk

etting locked out during the first viewing of their dream home – an 1820s townhouse in Leeds – turned out to be the best thing that could have happened for Lucy and Alex. ‘The owner was showing us the garden when we realised the latch had dropped on the door,’ says Lucy. ‘We all saw the funny side but, by the time we were able to get back in, another couple had arrived for a viewing.’ The other househunters liked the house too, and both couples offered the full asking price, but the owners – having built a rapport with Lucy and Alex while they were locked out – accepted their offer. ‘We were over the moon,’ says Lucy. ‘We’d been looking to move from our flat nearby for more than a year, and this house ticked all the boxes. It’s quiet, private, close to the city centre and full of character.’ Lucy and Alex stayed in their flat for six months while they renovated the house. ‘I’m a perfectionist,’ says Alex. ‘Although the house was well looked after and we could have moved straight in, we wanted to take it back to basics and create a modern style – but one that complemented the age of the property. There were so
many layers of paint on the walls and woodwork that we decided it was time to strip them all off and start afresh.’ With the help of Alex’s parents, he and Lucy worked every spare weekend and evening for six months to renovate the Victorian property, taking out the old bathroom fittings, pulling up carpets, laying new floors throughout, reinstating a bedroom fireplace, tiling the new bathroom and sanding every inch of the wooden fixtures and fittings back to their original state. The bathroom was given a walk-in shower and the kitchen, which has the units installed by the previous owners, was decorated and a new floor was laid. ‘It was a painstaking process and seemed to take forever, but if we were going to do the work, we wanted to do it properly,’ says Lucy. ‘We didn’t follow any methodical order – we just jumped about to ensure we got some variety – but in the end, we did every room ourselves, except for laying the new floors, the plumbing and decorating the hall – we’d had enough by then and hired a decorator!’ The renovation wasn’t without its issues. A leak in the cellar highlighted a problem with the old lead pipes, which then had to be removed and fitted with copper ones, and when they bought reclaimed cast-iron
DINING SPACE A striking brick fireplace makes a warm backdrop in the kitchen-diner. radiators to replace the characterless modern ones, it took several of their friends to hoist each one into place. ‘We also had a huge problem with deliveries,’ says Lucy. ‘We had a kitchen radiator delivered five times before they got it right – the first one leaked, the next two were the wrong size and then when it came to the fourth one, they sent the wrong colour. And it wasn’t just the radiator. Lots of things arrived either damaged or broken. It became a bit of a joke.’ Once the basics were finished, Lucy and Alex moved in and began to add the finishing touches. They chose pale grey as a linking colour, which they used throughout the house, adding feature walls for interest. ‘Finding the right shade of grey was harder than we thought it would be,’ says Lucy. ‘We didn’t want a blue-grey, which could have been quite cold, but a soft background shade that would work with lots of accent colours. We bought 30 sample pots before we found the one we wanted, which is Little Greene’s French Grey Mid.’ The furniture and accessories have evolved over time, although the couple had a very clear idea of the look they wanted – a combination of retro and modern, cool greys and splashes of colour, with fittings to reflect the period and character of the property. ‘All
the original features were still intact, apart from a fireplace in the guest bedroom, which had been boarded up and painted over,’ says Lucy. ‘We had a cast-iron fireplace in the flat that we brought with us, and it fitted perfectly.’ Lucy spent hours gathering ideas and inspiration from Pinterest and together they found modern pieces from shops such as Heal’s, Loaf, Made, Habitat and John Lewis & Partners. ‘We tend to like the same things,’ says Lucy. ‘There were a few splurge purchases, as we call expensive statement pieces, that we teamed with cheaper options. We did this in the dining room, where we bought two fabulous copper chairs and teamed them up with less expensive ones.’ Lucy and Alex are still adding finishing touches, but now have everything pretty much as they want it. ‘We love living in this house and the location is perfect,’ says Lucy. ‘Sometimes we look at other houses, just out of curiosity, but we always come back to this place and realise it’s hard to beat. We’re just extremely thankful for the accidental drop of the door latch the first time we came to see it – it might have been a very different story otherwise.’ HB FOR STORE DETAILS SEE WHERE TO BUY PAGE

ery few people can claim to have lived in both the oldest and the newest house in their village, but Merry Albright has that rare distinction. Just 250 yards from each other as the crow flies, more than 600 years separate the 14th-century cottage where she was born and the spacious contemporary property that is now her home in Eardisland, in Herefordshire’s beautiful Arrow Valley. Though centuries apart and on a different scale, they share a key feature – both have an oak frame at their core. Merry inherited a passion for this kind of traditional structure from her father, John Greene, who pioneered the revival of green-oak building in the 1970s. After university in Bristol and a stint working in London – which ‘confirmed that city life wasn’t for me’ – Merry returned to the countryside, settling down with husband Ben, who also grew up in the area. They both work alongside her father at Border Oak, the company he founded, and enjoyed the perk of living nearby in a handsome cottage they helped to design. But after the arrival of their second child Gabriel (the couple also have a daughter, Minerva), they realised they needed more space – and so, in 2010, Merry began to look for a bigger plot. It would take four years of diligent research, but her persistence paid off when a local farmer agreed to sell them a six-acre field on the edge of Eardisland, surrounded by meadows and orchards. ‘It was worth holding out for,’ she says. Gaining permission to build on it then took a further two years, so it was a huge relief when their design for ‘a contemporary barn-style house’ met with planning approval. Arranged in a horseshoe shape, with a west-facing central courtyard, Meadowmead’s configuration is reminiscent of old barns clustered around a farmyard. Thoughtful referencing of vernacular architecture and use of local materials – oak cladding and lime-mortar brickwork – has forged a visual 84 housebeautiful.com/uk

‘We didn’t want the formality that often goes with a house of this size – it just isn’t our style’ link with the village, while its generous expanses of glass fill the property with light. The result is a stunning modern interpretation of a manor house. In the vast open-plan kitchen, with its run of floor-toceiling windows facing the courtyard, the magnificent solid oak frame of the building is complemented by off-white walls, reflective pale composite work surfaces and limestone tiles on the floor. Passionate about craftsmanship, Merry sought out quality fixtures and fittings from local artisans and traditional British companies to suit the handmade integrity of the house. She is particularly delighted by a collaboration with talented joiner Louis Ferneyhough, of Fernio Furniture, near Monmouth, who designed and crafted all the cabinetry in the kitchen, pantry and utility room. Following Merry’s brief to ‘keep it plain’, the kitchen units have an elegant Georgian simplicity that is echoed by a substantial central island topped with Herefordian oak. A graphite electric Everhot range cooker provides a strong focal point, while quirky character is supplied by vintage accessories, such as a weathered metal wall clock. a chunky wooden country table and chairs – secondhand finds that were sandblasted to give them raw rustic appeal. The beautifully simple shapes and colours of her handmade Brickett Davda tableware give Merry pleasure on a daily basis. ‘I like the way each piece is slightly different; that they aren’t quite perfect,’ she says. ‘We didn’t want the formality that often goes with a house of this size – it just isn’t our style,’ she adds. ‘We’ve tried to create a more relaxed feel.’ The sitting room – in the middle section that links the two ‘wings’ – is furnished invitingly in earthy shades. Sofas upholstered in mole velvet and grey linen pick up on the subtle natural hues in a custom-made rug of soft plaited jute, while the opulent ‘two-tone peacock blue’ velvet armchair, from a local auction, adds a flash of colour. Despite its high, vaulted ceiling, this room is always cosy, even on the coldest days, thanks to a woodburning stove and underfloor heating beneath the wide oak boards. This features in every room and, together with excellent insulation, keeps the building energy efficient. Sustainability is important to Merry and Ben: the grey wool carpeting upstairs is made from natural undyed fleece backed with hessian, and most of their paint

His warm off-white, Whiting, provides a calm backdrop in many rooms, while deeper hues, such as Flaxen Grey, bring a period feel to the pantry and utility. Colour has been used cleverly throughout the whole house, with pale shades enhancing the sense of space in some of the rooms, and darker palettes bringing a cosy intimacy in others. Mylands’ inky Oratory, for instance, adds dramatic impact to the inner landing that leads to the high-ceilinged main bedroom. Here, furnishings inspired by the rich tones of a dark-green velvet headboard make a stylish statement and anchor the neutral scheme. Similarly, in its pale ensuite bathroom, a blackened-steel washstand, made to Merry’s design, provides a striking focal point, with its characterful countertop of pippy oak holding a simple modern basin and an array of vintage mirrors, picked up in the antiques shops of Ludlow, Ledbury and Hay-on-Wye. In the four years they have been at Meadowmead, the family has enjoyed finding new ways to navigate the space. The sizeable studio, in the wing across the courtyard from the kitchen, has turned out to be brilliant for parties, cinema nights and Merry’s creative workshops. ‘This is a special house in a wonderful spot,’ she enthuses. ‘We have more than enough space to enjoy. Slate, wood and a wildflower roof create a natural feel on this extension by Hayhurst & Co Architects
YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO CL ADDING WHY IS IT USED? Cladding is an external covering that’s applied to the outside of a building for various reasons, from protecting the walls from harsh elements and covering up damage, to changing the look of the house and making it more attractive. According to Colin St John of Freefoam Building Products, which specialises in manufacturing PVC products, ‘Cladding is one of the fastest-growing home-improvement projects, as it allows homeowners to give their property an instant makeover! Fitting exterior wall cladding can also help insulate your home.’ Added to this, it can mark out different areas – for instance, cladding on a new extension will set it apart from the main house.
W H AT A R E T H E DIFFERENT TYPES? There’s a variety of materials available – things to think about include how it looks, where it’s to be situated and cost. It can be applied in panels or strips, hung in a number of ways to create various effects, or materials mixed to produce a unique look. Opposite are some of the most popular… 92 housebeautiful.com/uk

Also called weatherboards, timber comes in different woods, grains and colours. It’s lightweight, thermally efficient, easy to repair and can achieve many effects. Look for companies that purchase their wood from PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) accredited sources. Hardwood is hardwearing, but softwood has to be treated to withstand the elements. All should be made fire-retardant. Also ask about the wood’s resistance to rot and fungus. The latest trend is to leave woods untreated, allowing them to weather over time. For instance, red cedar weathers to a delicate silvery grey. Charred timber cladding, used for centuries in Japan, is currently popular and can look stunning.
Choose slate for an elegant contemporary look. It’s natural, sustainable and long-lasting and comes in uniform tiles or a more rustic format. You can hang it horizontally or vertically.
BRICK SLIPS These slips are thin cuts of real brick or specially made thin brick tiles, which create the look of an authentic brick wall. Available in insulated or non-insulated form, they can be used on internal as well as external walls. Lightweight and quick to attach, they’re especially good where full brick would be too wide.
STONE Whether it’s panels of stacked veneers, or tiles of the same stone, these are available in many colours, effects and treatments and will create an upmarket result. ‘The monochrome look has always been hugely popular with designers and architects, and this continues,’ says Jack Jago of stone-cladding suppliers Norstone UK. ‘Our palette of light grey to ebony remains very popular, as it blends or contrasts with the entire colour spectrum.’
RENDER This is basically a cement-based material applied in layers or sprayed over an exterior brick wall. Crisp white is always in demand, but render is also available in colours.
M E TA L Often used on the outside walls of warehouses and office buildings, steel can also add an industrial edge to the exterior of a house. It can be installed horizontally, vertically or at an angle and painted or treated to create a burnished-metal look.
TILES Available in concrete or handmade clay, tiles produce a more traditional finish and add character. They’re not one of the cheaper options, though, but can create so many different effects, from mosaic to wood. Large-format porcelain tiles are now also available and give a more modern look.
FIBRE CEMENT Originally developed as a low-maintenance alternative to timber, this man-made cladding material is now widely used as a budget-friendly substitute for slate, and has become popular as a material in its own right. It’s long-lasting, and comes in a variety of colours and finishes. Glass reinforced concrete is also now available.
UPVC One of the most cost effective options, uPVC is light, easy to fit and requires minimal maintenance. It just needs a gentle wash over with soap and water, or a hose down with a pressure washer once in a while, according to Colin St John from Freefoam. It’s available in white, woodgrain and colours. Cheaper boards, however, can discolour over time. If you’re worried about this, look for better quality boards that come with up to 20-year discolouration guarantees for white, and minimum 10 years for coloured.

HOW TO CHOOSE? A lot will be down to personal taste, budget, the look you’re seeking and your surroundings, especially if you need to obtain planning permission. In most instances, cladding is covered by permitted development, but if you live in a conservation area, a listed building, a protected area or a National Park, then you’ll need planning permission, which may restrict your choices. And it’s worth remembering that if you live in a terrace or a semi-detached home, you may have to consult neighbours, and their views might have to be taken into consideration. Finally, the level of maintenance required could also influence your decision.
sealant for colour safety.’Jack also recommends considering how lighting will enhance the finish. ‘For instance, uplighting and downlighting can create stunning shadow effects both inside and out,’ he says. ‘And don’t forget to add the industry standard extra 10 per cent to allow for wastage from cuts etc.’ Colin from Freefoam adds that it’s important to choose a colour that complements the other exterior elements of your home, for example, the brickwork and window frames. And the advice from all experts is: if you’re in any doubt, contact the company. ‘An established, reputable one will have expert knowledge and give free advice pre- and post-sale,’ adds Jack.

Some cladding can be fitted on a DIY basis, for instance, timber or uPVC, but to be sure of the best end result it’s worth employing a professional who has experience of the type of cladding you want.
According to Colin St John, all cladding is designed to be safe when used in accordance with the guidelines stated within its fire rating, and is subject to stringent fire testing. ‘Homeowners can find the fire rating for cladding from the manufacturer,’ he says.
W H AT S H O U L D Y O U C O N S I D E R BEFORE BUYING? It’s worth doing extensive research and getting samples of the product you’re interested in to feel the quality and check the colour in daylight. ‘Website and brochure colours can vary due to the photography and lighting,’ says Jack Jago from Norstone UK. ‘We also recommend testing a small area/sample with the

‘We went with ultra-modern appliances in contrast with the more traditional kitchen,’ says Victoria. ‘The technology also meant we didn’t have to put an extractor hood on the wall as the hob has a re-circulating fan built in’
STATEMENT STYLE The large fluted ceramic sink is another nod to the period property’s origins
Lawyer Victoria Miller and her husband Dene, who works in software, were keen to maintain the character of their period home in west London. The existing kitchen space was small and basic and lacked personality, so they opted to install a tasteful yet dramatic kitchen that would stand the test of time Tell us about the original kitchen It was tiny and dilapidated – the flat had been a rental property, so it was a generic white affair with one oven and a small electric hob. There were lots of walls and doorways splitting up the space,
which made it feel small, despite the ceilings being three metres high. Describe what you were aiming to achieve with the new space I wanted it to feel large, airy and contemporary, yet sympathetic to its period; all of the original features had been removed over the years so we had a blank canvas. We spent a long time researching coving, radiators, valves and switches that were more in keeping with its Victorian origins. We visited the house next door, which has all of the original features, and that gave us an insight as to what it should look like. I wanted the kitchen to be a striking feature but also clearly zoned, to ensure we didn’t feel as though we were sitting in the kitchen when relaxing on the sofa. We did this by painting the entire back wall the same colour as the cabinets. We were concerned that using this dark shade would make the room feel small, but the contrasting marble next to the window bounces the light back into the room, bringing brightness alongside the dramatic swathe of green. How did you choose the kitchen? From the outset, I knew that I wanted a Devol kitchen, having seen one in an interiors magazine and fallen in love with it. We both like House Beautiful NOVEMBER 2020 99

HANDLES
Hand-cast solid aged brass handles complement the style of the drawers and cupboards
to cook and entertain, so it was important to get it right. We spent just under a year designing it and finally settled on green cabinetry, solid-brass hardware and honed Statuarietto marble. When did you start the project? The entire property was gutted back to its bare bones immediately after we bought it in September 2018. The initial work took nine weeks and we installed a temporary kitchen while we designed the final one with Devol. Once we’d settled on the colour for the cabinetry, we had the room redecorated and reinstated the period coving. Shortly afterwards, Devol arrived with the cabinetry. It took the team just under two weeks to fit it – they were incredible. Were there any challenges during the process? Two days into the build, we were told that one of the walls we wanted to move a metre back was a supporting wall. This meant we had to quickly organise a structural engineer and a party wall surveyor as we had to have a steel joist fitted. This is why you always need a contingency budget! We managed to do all of this in 10 days, due to our very understanding neighbour, so it didn’t set our timeline back. 100 housebeautiful.com/uk
Did you incorporate everything you wanted? We had hankered after a full-size wine fridge, but sadly weren’t able to fit it in. In the end, I wasn’t prepared to sacrifice the metre-wide pantry cupboard for it, as we don’t have cupboards on the wall in that space – but the pantry provides lots of storage. Is there anything you’d do differently? Not in terms of the kitchen. We’ve lived with it for a while now and it’s perfect for us; we spent a long time planning it with a dedicated designer and project manager at Devol and, between us, we’d thought of every detail. However, in the next project I won’t use spotlights (or if I do they will be moveable). Strangely, I’m finding that spotlights make it difficult to get the right amount of light in the right places, so I’ve learned that next time I’ll use a mix of wall lights, feature ceiling lights and lamps. What is your favourite part of the space? I’d say the high marble splashback and shelf. I can display foliage and curiosities on the shelf and the marble reflects the light from the window back into the room.

CRE ATE A DISPL AY
1
Victoria’s attention to detail and appreciation for the Victorian origins of her home have created a kitchen that feels warm and traditional yet contemporary. The deep green wall and matching cabinetry is broken up by a sweeping stroke of elegant marble topped with a single minimalistic shelf. Decorated with sprigs of eucalyptus, Victoria’s open shelving adds personality to an otherwise practical space.

Brackets in the same colour as the shelving create a seamless look. A handy ladder allows for easy access. White ceramics stand out against the almost black surface creating a striking yet practical display. Henley kitchen hand-painted in Charcoal with open shelving, from £22,000. Stratton ladder, £245. • Not sure about committing to completely open shelving? Nadia Johnson, a student adviser, lives with husband James and sons Sam, nine, and George, five, in a period property in Barnes, south London. They wanted a layout that flowed and a statement scheme Tell us about the original bathroom It was a large space but, despite that, it always felt cluttered and cramped, which was entirely down to the strange layout of the sanitaryware and furniture. There was a central washing island that cut the room in half, with two sinks on one side and a toilet on the other. For some reason, the mirrors on the island

were positioned so low so that we had to stoop to use them, which was particularly difficult for James when he was shaving. What else didn’t you like about the space? The shower was tiny compared with the size of the room and it was stuck in a dark corner, which made it feel very claustrophobic, while the bath was boringly standard. There were two beautiful original windows, but they were fitted with frosted glass that restricted the natural light and made the room look dingy even on a sunny day. Considering how large the room was, I don’t think anyone could have come up with a worse layout if they’d tried. How did you decide on the style of the new bathroom? After three years of living with the original layout, I had a good idea of what I wanted, but needed a designer to come up with a workable plan. I was keen to make a feature of the two windows and to include a designer-style freestanding bath. It was really a matter of deciding where the furniture would go to maximise the space and improve the general flow. House Beautiful NOVEMBER 2020 105

WINDOW TREATMENT Roman blinds in a simple, neutral fabric allow the period sash windows to speak for themselves
STORAGE A recessed alcove provides space for decorative accessories STATEMENT TUB
Painting the bath yellow and placing it centrally along the wall, has ensured it is a focal point in the room
Where did you start? I visited Kallums Bathrooms, which is local to us, and the managing director Matthew Kallum spent time advising us and helping us come up with the perfect solution. The company project-managed the refurbishment and employed its own building team, although I felt very much involved in the decision-making process. Describe the new layout of the space Matthew relocated the shower to the other side of the room and gave it a wet room-style look, but with a glass shower screen to contain the water without restricting the light. He allocated an entire wall for the twin wash basin and vanity, along with two large units that gave us all the storage space we’d need to keep the bathroom organised and clutter-free. Did you work to a budget? We had about £30,000 to spend and I must admit we had to rein ourselves in to try to keep to it. The original plan was to buy a bath made from a stone composite material, but we changed our minds 106 housebeautiful.com/uk
and opted for a much less expensive alternative. It still looks stunning, but that decision saved us thousands. Our biggest investment was in the taps and tiles, which is something I might not do again as there are great alternatives available for less money. Were there any hiccups? The work took about 10 weeks as there were delays when items for the bath and shower went missing and had to be reordered. The installation cost about £12,000. How do you feel now it’s finished? I love the sense of space and the feeling of brightness, which makes the room look so fresh. I’d advise anyone considering a new bathroom to go for colour and not to be too nervous. People are happy to use colour in every other area of the house and I think you should really go for it in a bathroom, as you don’t spend a lot of time in there. My favourite item is the painted bath, because yellow is such a happy, optimistic hue – and every time I walk in here now, I instantly feel happy and positive.

It’s no surprise that Nadia’s favourite item in her bathroom is her cheerful yellow tub – it’s a standout feature in the light and airy space. The pop of yellow against the soft blue tiles reminds us of gloriously sunny days and provides an instant hit of positivity and happiness. A coloured bath is a perfect way to set the mood and atmosphere of a room without committing to painting the walls.

• If you fancy a splash of yellow in a contemporary style, the River bath (A) from Waters Baths of Ashbourne is a great option. Painted in Farrow & Ball’s Yellow Ground, the bath’s golden colour and modern shape come into their own when contrasted with rustic textures and classic white. It’s £1,595 plus £295 for the painted finish. • Although the clawfoot bath is traditional, Claybrook’s take on the style (B) feels current due to its millennial pink exterior and the added detail of the painted feet. Washington clawfoot bath, from £1,600. • In this bathroom design from Ripples (C), a BC Designs boat bath is painted in a rich mulberry for an opulent feel. GUEST APPEARANCES If you’re wondering where your visitors are going to sleep this Christmas, we’ve found some clever ways to turn unused space into a comfortable –and stylish – bed of roses
114 housebeautiful.com/uk
Christmas, more than any other time of the year, means overnight guests, and overnight guests need somewhere to lay their heads. But what happens if you don’t have a spare room to spare? Well, you get creative and make your bed with what you do have, from an awkward alcove to that odd area under the eaves. Here are ten brilliant solutions to help you stretch your space – some quick and easy, others requiring a bit more of an investment in time and money – to help you become the host with the most.
1
DOUBLE DECKERS
2
DAY INTO NIGHT
Opposite A real cut above the standard bunk, a built-in mezzanine bed makes the most of dead aerial space – especially if you extend it into unused cupboard space too, giving plenty of legroom for even the tallest guest. When not needed, simply remove the ladder and the upper deck becomes the ideal place to store bedding, toys or out-of-season clothes. Always consult a professional builder when planning any structural work
This page Stylishly low, this slimline, space-saver teen bed can double as a guest bed or day bed. In day bed mode, ramp up the comfort factor with cushions and throws, or go one step further and create a ‘sofa’ by fixing a padded panel to the wall to act as a backrest. Rafa Kids A75 Teen Bed, £725, Scandiborn
MAKING CONNECTIONS When designing your nook-meets-spare room, remember that in today’s always-on world, you (or your guests) are going to need to charge a phone, laptop or tablet at some point, so make sure to include some power and USB sockets. A built-in adjustable reading light will be useful too.
3
CUBBY LOVE
Okay, it might be a stretch to get this done in time for Christmas, but this super-minimalist cubby bedroom is a brilliant use of space, and will double as a reading nook in the day. Add blackout curtains or a screen for privacy. A qualified carpenter will be able to design a nook for you. Visit instituteofcarpenters.com to find one

Left Why have just a spare bed in that awkward alcove under the eaves when you can have lots of storage too by building a raised platform? When measuring, make sure you leave enough room for your guest to sit up without banging their head. Either build in bespoke drawers, as here, or fill the space with a chest or pullout drawers on wheels. For white underbed drawers, try Time4Sleep
Above Take reading in bed to a whole new level with an integrated bench and bookshelf. It’s the perfect hideaway reading nook when you don’t have guests, and a secluded sleeping space when you do. Add drawers or cupboards to keep duvets and pillows when not needed. Chartered Society of Designers will be able to help you find a qualified craftsperson to plan this design. Visit csd.org.uk
Left Not every sofa bed has to be a sofa… they can be chairs too. Ideal for when you’re short of space, this loveseat is spacious enough for two to snuggle up on when used as a chair, and pulls out to form a full-size single bed. Above So this isn’t strictly a bed, but it does make a beautiful window seat, giving your guests somewhere comfy to lounge. Bonus: the capacious ottoman is the perfect place to store duvets and pillows out of sight during the day. Eloise ottoman in Chloe Denim, £870, Neptune
Left For the ultimate abracadabra moment when your guests arrive and wonder where they’ll be sleeping, invest in a smart foldaway bed that disappears into a cabinet during the day, and then flips out when needed at night. Multifunctional, compact and minimalist, it’s the perfect space-saving solution for even the smallest home. Albero fold-out bed, from a selection, Rauch Moebel 118 housebeautiful.com/uk

House Beautiful NOVEMBER 2020 123
‘In the autumn, there’s no expectation for any of us to be outside. Contrarily enough, however, I love to have outdoor barbecues, open fires, or picnics in the woods with soup and bread, experiencing the way the weather changes and becomes unpredictable,’ says author and chef Trine Hahnemann of her love of feasting among nature in the colder months. ‘I’m stunned each year by the magic of bright yellow, burning orange, ruby red and army green leaves on the trees. As the leaves fall, the days get ever shorter, but the meals warmer and longer.’ So take inspiration from Trine, wrap up well, set the scene with lights, candles and blankets and enjoy the experience of dining outdoors with friends and family this autumn. Nordic autumn soup Cooking outside is fun and, for me, very relaxing. It takes out the stress; it’s all about tending the fire, letting time run its course and hanging out with your guests. Somehow, anything you cook outside tastes amazing. You can vary this autumn soup to your taste; try it with curry powder or garam masala, seasoning with lemon or lime juice and substituting the cream for coconut milk if you want to make it spicy. This is enough for eight
people, or four people for two days. On the second day, the soup is better when blended until smooth, then seasoned again with salt and pepper before serving. SERVES 8 4tbsp olive oil 1 onion, sliced 2 leeks, sliced and washed well 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 rosemary sprigs 3 bay leaves 1kg root vegetables, such as celeriac and parsnips, peeled and cut into small cubes
F O O D I N S P I R AT I O N
500g potatoes, peeled and cut into small cubes 1tbsp lightly crushed coriander seeds 3L water 2tbsp organic vegetable bouillon powder, or 2 bouillon cubes 1tsp freshly grated nutmeg 200ml double cream 1tbsp freshly ground black pepper 2tsp sea salt flakes 1 Add the olive oil to a large saucepan and set over the medium heat of a barbecue or firepit, then add the onion, leeks, garlic, rosemary and bay leaves and let it cook for 5min. 2 Tip in the root vegetables, potatoes and coriander seeds, then pour in the measured water and add the bouillon, stirring to dissolve. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 8-10min. 3 Now add the grated nutmeg and double cream, stir and add the seasoning. Serve the soup hot, with flatbreads.
Flatbreads with olive oil These are easy to make, but have to be eaten right away. Be sure to use an olive oil you really like; the taste of the fresh, pungent oil with the sweet wheat bread is the whole point here. If you like to have two to three breads per person, double the quantities; just remember any leftovers can’t be stored. MAKES 8 25g fresh yeast, or 7g dried yeast 500g strong white bread flour, plus more to dust 10g fine sea salt 350ml water Extra virgin olive oil, to serve 1 In a large mixing bowl, rub the yeast into the flour with your fingertips, then add the salt and measured water. Mix together with your hands
until a dough starts to form. 2 Lightly flour a worktop, place the dough on the floured surface and form it into a ball by folding each edge in turn into the centre. Place in a mixing bowl and cover with a tea towel. Rest for at least 20min, but ideally for 1 hour, in a warm, draught-free place. 3 Turn the dough out gently onto a well-floured worktop.
Now form 8 small balls, and roll them out into flatbreads about ½cm thick. Generously flour the top of each, cover with a clean tea towel and set aside to rest once more for 10min. 4 Lift each flatbread onto a lightly floured baking tray and take them to the barbecue. The barbecue should have burned down and the coals should be glowing and pale.
5 Bake the flatbreads on a wire rack over the coals. After 3-4min, turn them for the first time; you’ll know when they’re ready to turn as they firm up and no longer stick to the wire rack. Bake for 8-10min until golden brown, turning regularly. 6 When done, take off the fire, brush immediately with olive oil and allow to cool a little before serving. House Beautiful NOVEMBER 2020 125
Barbecue beetroot, bitter leaves and orange Colourful and tasty, this is a salad I could live on, celebrating as it does all the best of late autumn: sweet beetroots, tangy and juicy oranges, with bitter and crisp salad. A true gift from nature. Serve with the Nordic autumn soup and flatbreads with olive oil.
126 housebeautiful.com/uk
SERVES 8 FOR THE VEGETABLES 8 whole small beetroot 1 head of treviso or radicchio 1 bunch of puntarelle (optional, if you can find it) 3 organic oranges FOR THE DRESSING 3tbsp blackcurrant vinegar or balsamic vinegar 1tbsp finely grated organic orange zest (from the oranges above) 2tsp honey 2tbsp extra virgin olive oil Sea salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper
1 Get a barbecue going, then wait until it’s burned down and the coals are glowing and pale. 2 For the vegetables, scrub the skin of the beetroot; the skins are going to stay on. Place on the barbecue and cook for 30min, turning now and again. 3 Grill the heads of treviso and puntarelle (if using) whole, turning to grill all sides. If any one head of leaves is particularly bulky, halve it lengthways to aid the cooking. Once cooked, remove and slice the heads. 4 To prepare the oranges, first zest and set aside for the dressing. Cut a slice from the top and bottom of each, until you can see the segments. Now place on a worktop and slice off the skin and white pith, working from top to bottom, following the curve of the fruit and rotating the orange to remove it all. Slice the oranges into wheels, then halve or quarter each wheel. 5 In a small bowl, whisk all the ingredients for the dressing until emulsified, then season to taste. 6 Cut the beetroot into thin wedges or slices (keep the skins on) and mix with the oranges, grilled leaves and dressing. Serve on a platter.

Burnt carrots and lentil cream The carrot is a vegetable we unfairly take for granted, using it as a basic vegetable for sauces and stocks or eating it boiled or raw to get our five a day. Let’s change that! Carrots can be a main course as well, a vegetable placed at the heart of our plates. Here I prepare it ‘burnt’, to add flavour that works well with the roots’ inner sweetness.
SERVES 4 150g yellow split peas 1 garlic clove 1tbsp cumin seeds 150g grated carrots 250g natural yogurt 1tbsp shredded preserved lemon rind, or 4tbsp lemon juice Sea salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper 6 carrots, ideally in mixed colours (orange, purple and yellow) 4tbsp whole buckwheat groats Leaves from 2 mint sprigs
Leaves from 2 tarragon sprigs 1 Soak the yellow split peas overnight, following the packet instructions. The next day, drain them, then boil for 30min in plenty of water. Drain, setting aside 50g for later. 2 Place the remaining split peas in a food processor with the garlic and cumin, and blend. Scrape into a mixing bowl and fold in the grated carrots, natural yogurt and preserved lemon. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 3 Put the whole carrots in a
dry frying pan and set over a high heat (or place on the barbecue), turning regularly to char them on all sides. This will take about 10min. 4 Separately toast the whole buckwheat groats in a small dry frying pan, until they turn a shade darker and smell roasted. 5 Spoon the split pea purée onto a platter. Halve the burnt carrots lengthways while still warm and place them on top, then sprinkle with the reserved split peas, toasted buckwheat and herbs. Season with freshly ground pepper and serve.

Lemon mousse This is like eating snow: light and airy, with a perfect balance of sweet and sour. Though it is a classic Danish dessert, this recipe is inspired by the Italian panna cotta. If you like, you can slightly candy the lemon julienne for the top. SERVES 8 FOR THE MOUSSE 6 x 2g gelatine leaves 6 eggs, separated 150g granulated sugar Finely grated zest of 1 organic lemon 100ml lemon juice 400ml double cream TO SERVE 200ml whipping cream, or double cream, whipped (optional) Zest of 1 organic lemon, cut into julienne 1 For the mousse, soften the gelatine sheets in a small bowl of cold water for about 5min. 2 Meanwhile, beat the egg yolks and sugar in a mixing bowl with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Add the lemon zest and juice and beat again. 3 Remove the gelatine sheets from the water, squeeze out any excess water and place in a small pan set over a very gentle heat, until the gelatine has just melted. 4 Remove from the heat and slowly pour the melted gelatine into the egg yolk mixture, beating constantly to make sure it’s well combined. Set aside. 5 In another scrupulously clean bowl, whisk the egg whites until they’re quite stiff. In a third bowl, whip the double cream until light and fluffy. Set aside in a cool place for now. 6 When the egg yolk mousse is starting to set, fold in the egg whites and cream very carefully, until just combined. Transfer the mousse into 8 small glasses or a big serving bowl and put in the refrigerator for at least 5hr, or overnight. 7 Serve the mousse decorated with whipped cream, if you like, and the julienned lemon zest.
Apple trifle The best apples are a cross between sweet and sour, where the first bite makes you shiver from the sourness but, as you eat more, you’re rewarded with sweetness. I use Cox in baking, apple sauce and on rye bread for a snack. Apples are perfect in many dishes, creating a sweet-sour balance needed in stews, cakes and puddings.
SERVES 4-6 1kg apples, such as Cox 100-150g granulated sugar, plus 2tbsp 200g stale sourdough or regular white bread 3½tbsp salted butter 200ml double cream Red sorrel leaves or mint leaves, to serve 1 Core and cube the apples, place in a saucepan and set over a medium heat. Cook until bubbling, then reduce the heat and add the sugar, starting with 100g. Taste; if you want
to add more, do so, but it shouldn’t be too sweet. Now leave to simmer for 10min, stirring occasionally to create a lumpy sauce. Leave to cool. 2 Cut the bread into cubes. Melt the butter in a frying pan and toss in the croutons to toast, sprinkling with the 2tbsp of sugar, until they caramelise and become golden brown. Leave to cool. 3 Whip the cream until it forms soft peaks. Choose 4-6 glasses. Spoon in alternate layers of apple sauce, cream and croutons and decorate the top with sorrel or mint leaves. Along with food trends of yore, like pasta and avocados, kale is here to stay. It is, quite rightly, the hero of the health food movement – being both cheap and packed full of vitamins and minerals. I adore kale not only for its cooking properties but also its resilience through winter. While most other leafy vegetables have long since given up, kale soldiers on through the coldest months, bringing a muchneeded injection of green to our kitchens. Kale comes in many forms. The flat variety is mostly used for animal feed. Cavolo nero (or Tuscan kale) and curly kale are what you’d usually find in the grocers, but Russian and purple kale are also great eating varieties. All types have low water content so they don’t shrink like spinach does when cooked, but do need some care to ensure they’re tender. Remove the inner stalk when cooking, even if you’re stewing it for a while, as it’s very tough and woody. Contrary to popular opinion, kale can be eaten raw; it just needs some special treatment. ‘Massaging’ kale might sound strange, but giving it a good squeeze with olive oil for five minutes breaks it down and renders it soft enough to use in a salad. The other option is to chop it very finely. Food
writer Joshua McFadden’s famous kale salad incorporates finely sliced cavolo nero dressed with a mixture of garlic, lemon, chilli flakes, finely grated pecorino, toasted breadcrumbs and lots of salt and pepper. I’ve translated this into a super-quick pasta dish, dressing cooked linguine or orecchiette with the above ingredients and heating through in the pasta pan for a few minutes, along with some anchovies. A more traditional use of kale is in soups and stews. It’s robust enough to be cooked for a long time and will absorb a lot of flavour. I love it in dishes such as pasta e fagioli, a rich tomato and fennel sausage ragu, or in a pearl barley risotto. It’s also the base of a wonderful green shakshuka: eggs braised in a sauce of green herbs, spices and lots of leafy green vegetables, topped with crumbled feta. Kale’s low water content also makes it ideal for frying and roasting. Spread out torn pieces of curly kale on a baking tray, drizzle with oil and sprinkle with salt, sugar, chilli flakes and five spice. Roast for around 20min at 210°C until crisp, then use to top stir fries, dip into peanut sauce or just eat straight off the tray. Follow Giovanna on Instagram @giovannaryan

AUTUMN GLORIES The blazing colours, the slight chill in the air, the smell of woodsmoke and bonfires… it’s an inspiring time of year, so soak up everything the season has to offer – indoors and out – says wellbeing writer Jane Alexander ou can tell the moment autumn properly arrives. It’s not just that nip in the air and the turning of the leaves; there’s also a distinct shift in energy. Lazy languid summer has packed its bags and a crisp clarity takes its place. in the garden or park, embracing the freshness that autumn brings offers a whole host of benefits. Our ancestors watched the natural world and learned that every season possesses a different energy. They discovered that, if we want to stay healthy and happy, it’s smart to adapt our lives according to where we are in the calendar. So let’s look at ways to embrace the season and make the most of this magical time of year.

GET ACTIVE OUTSIDE
Mists shroud the hills and float low over the fields, giving a ghostly feel to early morning walks. Spiders’ webs are miracles touched by dew or frost. Leaves dance in the breeze and rustle in drifts along banks and pavements… Kicking through crunchy leaf piles while out on a walk (add children or an over-excited dog for extra delight) is great exercise, as is raking up leaves. For sweeping up leaf fall, check out the traditional hazel and birch twig besom broom, cut from Grown in Britain certified woodland (from £12; threecopse.co.uk). O Picnics and barbecues aren’t just for summer. Fill a trio of flasks with warming soup, silky hot chocolate and spicy-sweet glühwein, passing them mitten to mitten. Use insulated food pots (chillysbottles.com) for stews or warm grain salads. Grab a waterproof picnic rug – the Fusion woven picnic rug from John Lewis & Partners has a pleasing forest vibe (£30; johnlewis.com) and, if you can, cosy up around a barbecue or firepit. O Wrap up warm – dig out your favourite scarf, bobble hat and mittens. And don’t forget your feet – they need to be kept toasty warm in waterproof boots or shoes. COSY UP INDOORS AUTUMN HARVEST Pumpkins and squash make excellent seasonal table decorations
There’s something so beguiling about the contrast between the crisp cold outside and a snug, cosy home, and now’s the time to usher extra warmth into your space. You don’t need to go for a decoration or furnishing overhaul – simply switch in some cosier elements and feelgood textures. Whisk away the cool cottons and spread woollen throws and blankets over chairs and sofas. Welsh woollen blankets in autumn leaf colours (from £149; melintregwynt.co.uk), or delicious monochrome designs with Uist Wool’s heirloom blankets (£195; uistwool.com) are instant mood-shifters. O Flannel sheets and brushed-cotton duvet covers are a bedtime cuddle – pack away the pale shades of summer and opt for snug tartan, paisley or woodland patterns. O If you lack the bliss of an open fire or woodburner, introduce the fire element into your home with candles. Chase & Wonder candles spread the season through your space. The Enchanted Forest (cedarwood, smoked oak, birch and moss) is autumn encapsulated, while The Library (amber, pepper, pomegranate) sets the mood for snuggling up with a good book (from £34; chaseandwonder.com). O Bring the outside in: create a beautiful display of autumnal foliage, berries and flowers. Use pumpkins and squashes as seasonal table decorations. Create a quirky flower vase using a hollowed-out pumpkin with a jam jar of water inside and fill with blooms. Make an autumn wreath using your favourite leaves interspersed with mini gourds and berries secured in place with florist’s wire. O

Our pagan ancestors followed a wheel of festivals throughout the year. Halloween was known as Samhain, celebrated over the last couple of weeks in October. Samhain was a fire festival (it’s likely Bonfire or Guy Fawkes Night harks back to this). The traditions of Halloween have their roots in very ancient customs – the grinning lanterns were intended to scare away evil spirits, while dressing up in costumes was meant to fool demons so they wouldn’t follow you home. Trick or treat? This was a time when people cleared debts and quarrels – a rough and ready kind of score-settling.

ardens can evolve dramatically and in the 18 years since Sarah and Graeme Oxby moved to a detached 1930s home in north London, theirs has changed from a children’s playground to a contemporary living space.
‘As our two young children grew up, they became less interested in the garden, and we eventually decided to reclaim it as a more adult space we could look out onto from a new extension,’ explains Sarah. The garden designer took on the task of transforming her own 20m x 15m south-east-facing plot, combining a strong geometric layout with a soft, calming planting style. ‘I found it surprisingly difficult to be the designer while also being the client!’ she adds. She and Graeme bought the property in 2002, attracted by its large, light rooms. At the time, the garden had almost no plants, just steps down to a square lawn and a long, thin strip of patio that
142 housebeautiful.com/uk
resembled a corridor. They put up some swings and, apart from when the children played there, the garden was rarely used. ‘That changed in 2015 when we built an extension for an openplan kitchen and dining area that overlooks the garden,’ says Sarah. ‘It highlighted the importance of having an outdoor space that’s both lovely to look out on, and that you feel drawn into. I wanted planting to create a good structure throughout the year, so chose lots of evergreens, such as bay and laurustinus standards, yew, hebes, Japanese holly, pittosporum and osmanthus. Sadly, there’s no box, because box caterpillars are causing havoc in this area!’ Sarah has always liked modern, linear garden designs – ‘one of my favourites is the Mien Ruys Gardens in the Netherlands’ – the style of which complements the new extension perfectly. ‘Inside, we’ve decorated in grey tones, with wood doors and furniture, so we continued this theme into the garden, creating a seamless
G A R D E N I N S P I R AT I O N
transition between the indoor and outdoor spaces,’ says Sarah. ‘For the hard landscaping, I chose granite that’s similar in colour to the kitchen tiling, while also being hardwearing and practical as it’s less likely to stain than other natural stones such as sandstone. Visually, the expanse of paving is broken up by a deck built from Iroko, a hardwood I love. The garden took three months to build in the autumn of 2016 and, after thoroughly digging the beds and adding lots of compost to the London clay, I planted it in 2017.’ As she’d lived there for so long before tackling the garden, Sarah had an excellent knowledge of the plot and how to improve it. ‘We’re overlooked by neighbouring houses, and had little more screening than a mature whitebeam and purple-leaved cherry. To add privacy, I positioned the main dining area lower down in the garden, hidden by a line of olive trees underplanted with ‘Dwarf Blue’ lavender, a compact variety with wonderfully fragrant flowers,’ she says. ‘There’s a significant fall of 1.65 metres from the house to the back fence, so I’ve created different levels – a useful ploy in a small garden to add interest. Near the terrace, there are raised beds planted with perennials such as hardy geraniums, aquilegias, purple verbena and white horned pansies (Viola cornuta ‘Alba’) which, if regularly deadheaded, just keep on flowering.’ Sarah also combined trees and evergreens with perennial planting so there’s always colour in the garden, no matter the time of year. ‘I love flowering plants in blues, purples and whites – I find them restful, especially in the evening. I’ve included blue ‘Brookside’ hardy geraniums and lavenders, and the purple spikes of ‘Caradonna’ salvias. White ‘Annabelle’ hydrangeas fill the back of the long border, offset by fences that I’ve painted black, which I find creates a really good backdrop to the planting.’ The design incorporates a variety of seating areas for different purposes and weather conditions. At the far end, a gabion bench creates a focal point, providing a shady spot to escape the sun. The patio dining area is in a central position ideal for entertaining, while on summer evenings, Sarah and Graeme perch on the raised-bed walling or sit on the steps beside the water feature bowl. ‘The place I opt for most often though, is probably the Adirondack chair on the upper patio as it has a perfect view of the garden,’ says Sarah. Her ambition was for a low-maintenance but beautiful plot. ‘I only grow easy-going, reliable plants – I enjoy pottering and dead-heading, but I don’t want hassle,’ she says. ‘We also have a small lawn, with countersunk stepping stones to prevent a path being worn in the grass. It takes just 10 minutes to mow, and overall the garden is proving to be relatively low maintenance. The topiary is kept in check with little-and-often shaping throughout the year, while the perennials are cut back in autumn. ‘My favourite space in the garden is the lowest corner, where there are tree ferns as well as a multi-stemmed cherry underplanted with hellebores, ferns, yew balls, brunnera and Japanese anemones. It adds immensely to the views from indoors, which have become very important to us all. Even in the winter, when we’re less likely to venture into the garden, we watch what’s happening outside. It’s the backdrop to our lives inside the house.’ HB For further information, see hampsteadgardendesign.com. To find out more about Mien Ruys Gardens, visit tuinenmienruys.nl

ADDING DRAMA Sarah wants to enjoy her garden, not be a slave to it, so she’s chosen undemanding, rewarding plants that thrive in the available light levels – sun or partial shade – and cope in London clay. The only exception is the yew hedge, which sulks in the wet clay soil but is such an excellent evergreen structural plant that Sarah is persevering with it. She’s also kept to a limited colour palette, repeating plants to link different areas. Here are some that are not only performing well, but also adding drama and helping to soften the grey hardstanding: Bay standards (Laurus nobilis) metre-high stems add a strong framework with aromatic leaves. Honey spurge (Euphorbia mellifera) is a fast-growing perennial that forms rounded clumps with bronze, honeyscented flowers in spring. Japanese holly (Ilex crenata), also known as box-leaved holly, has small, shiny, wavy-toothed leaves that are easily clipped. Laurustinus (Viburnus tinus) has glossy easily clipped leaves, with creamy flowers in winter. Multi-stemmed cherry (Prunus serrula) has a graceful silhouette when stripped of foliage in winter, revealing mahogany-hued bark. Olive trees (Olea europaea) are
fast-growing evergreens with silvery leaves on whippy stems that move easily in the breeze. Osmanthus (Osmanthus x burkwoodii) is a slow-growing, rounded shrub with tiny white flowers that smell beautiful in spring. Good box substitute. Siberian bugloss (Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’) is a shade-loving perennial with heart-shaped silver leaves and sprays of mini blue flowers. Silver spear (Astelia chathamica) forms clumps of spiky, silvery, sword-shaped leaves. Tree ferns (Dicksonia antarctica) have stout woolly stems topped with long fronds that cast dappled light on the ground below. House Beautiful NOVEMBER 2020 145

THE ART OF THE ALLOTMENT Her grandfather’s courtyard garden and her own burgeoning plot provide the inspiration for artist Clare Curtis to follow her dream WORDS CAROLINE ATKINS AND LIZ MURPHY PHOTOGRAPHY RICHARD BLOOM

H
aving grown up in Felixstowe, Clare Curtis has long been inspired by the working heritage of her surroundings. A sense of industry runs through her art – nature and man producing something beautiful together from the everyday. Her linocuts and screen prints have a down-to-earth quality that’s full of graphic energy: overall-clad figures haul nets or dig vegetable plots, and plant stems twine across the paper as vigorously as triffids. It’s not surprising that one of Clare’s favourite places to sketch is her allotment. Many of her prints capture her plot (a cycle ride away from her home) in each season. Shortest Day, in which a robin, cabbages, holly and a bearded figure with a red hat and a stalk of sprouts slung over his shoulder, subvert the classic Christmas card image; All Hallows reflects the warm colours of autumn as the gardener gathers his crop of marrows and squashes; Fruits of Our Labours depicts high summer in shades of pink and yellow; while May Day is a hive of industry as the greening plot comes alive and birds circle in search of juicy seeds. Clare has always loved stories, but pictures were more important to her than the written word (‘I didn’t realise it as a child, but I now know I’m dyslexic’), and discovering at school that she could draw things accurately opened up a happy alternative to academic work. She went on to study illustration and printmaking at art college in Dundee and then worked in London as an illustrator, but it wasn’t really what she wanted to do. Then came an opportunity to move back to
148 housebeautiful.com/uk
All Hallows Felixstowe to live in her late grandfather’s house. Here she knew it was her chance to give printmaking a go. Now Clare works from an old garage behind the house, now converted into a studio with skylights and glass doors to provide plenty of light. There are even windows that overlook the courtyard garden, which supplies much of her inspiration. Her prints decorate everything from deckchair seating at Hampton Court to mustard pots by Suffolk brewer Adnams, as well as nature and cookery books, novels and poetry: she created a repeat design of Tudorbethan houses for a paperback edition of Julian Barnes’s Metroland, and the distinctive oak tree cover of Fiona Stafford’s acclaimed The Long, Long Life of Trees. Clare illustrates her ideas first, favouring striking plant forms and everyday working life in her bright designs. She describes herself more as a gardener than a nature lover. ‘Plants are my thing,’ she says. ‘My love of plant and garden forms finds its way into most of my work, bringing me immense pleasure. Their structure and pattern are a constant inspiration.’ Outside of the planting, Clare’s allotment provides extra food for her creative brain. She loves the variety of its textures and patterns, the slanting lines of tumbledown sheds and corrugated-iron fences, wheelbarrows and tools, and the intricacies of wire mesh in the fencing and cages. ‘I put what I find visually pleasing and what interests me in my prints,’ she says. ‘And by coincidence, they end up exploring my relationship with plants and the very British passion for gardening!’ To see more of Clare’s work visit clarecurtis.co.uk

Crafted from 100 per cent wool, this ‘cobble’ style, flatweave carpet feels luxurious underfoot with a dense, looped pile that only needs a quick vacuum to keep it looking its best. Simply stunning in the living room, it’s also great for higher traffic areas, thanks to wool’s natural elasticity that resists crushing and helps tufts spring back. And because it’s made from pure wool, it acts as an insulator too, keeping you and your home toasty warm even when it’s cold outside. House Beautiful Leeds Holbeck carpet is available in six colours, £27.99/sq metre
The rich, creamy shade of Leeds Holbeck pairs beautifully with dark wood and neutral-toned furniture, making it ideal for both traditional and contemporary homes

House Beautiful Residence in Almost Ochre (below), £39.99/sq metre
Striped carpets draw the eye down and along, elongating rooms and making small or narrow spaces appear larger

The House Beautiful Long Beach chaise sofa comes with six free cushions (not all shown), so just add a cosy throw or two and you’ll be set for the winter months ahead. House Beautiful NOVEMBER 2020 169
My style inspirations CASSANDRA ELLIS The colour aficionado and founder of paint company Atelier Ellis on her enduring love of calm tones and celebrating beauty in the home I grew up in New Zealand, where I spent my childhood creating small-scale homes. I retreated into a world centred around decorating dolls’ houses, or my playhouse in the garden, taking pictures and even making my own magazines. From a young age, it has always brought me such joy to create beauty in the home. I studied economics at university, which still feeds into everything I do. After graduation, I fell into event and set design for the television industry and was given a great deal of creative freedom, which was very liberating as a young woman. I can still walk into any space and tell you how big it is, where the light falls and how to make it ‘feel’ right.

I’ve always mixed my own paint shades – and by that, I mean seven-years-old always! In my early twenties, I studied paintmaking and effects and wanted to set up a paint business then, but it took me another two decades and a varied career path to get there! We make a lot of choices based on colour, from clothing and interiors to cars, and I think about colour – and paint – as something with a lot of emotion attached. I wanted Atelier Ellis to function as a conduit for people to tell their own stories at home. Our latest collection, called Wonder, recaptures the joy of what it is to be childlike and the simplicity and freedom of those days.
MAKERS AND MUSES In design, I really admire Ilse Crawford – there’s nobody else quite like her. Mostly, though,
I’m influenced by independent artists and makers – people who choose to live creatively. I love collecting pieces of art that bear the hand of the maker – we’re lucky to have some beautiful paintings and ceramics in this style. I also adore Noguchi lighting, and an Elliott Erwitt photograph would be the very best thing to have at home one day. I find pleasure in visiting places where you can feel the essence of the people who have lived there – that slightly giddy feeling of knowing you are inside something utterly unique. Historic properties such as Kettle’s Yard, Charleston house, Monk’s House and Kelmscott Manor are some of my favourite spots.
LOCATION, LOCATION My husband and I live between south London and East Sussex. For us, two small homes in our favourite places, rather than one big family home, works best. Both are very calm yet both stimulate me. In Battersea, our apartment is filled with beautiful north-facing light and is close to the river. We’re also undertaking a new project in Lewes, which is currently derelict, but will eventually become the perfect studio. We’ll be able to step outside the front door and onto the South Downs, which is an area that brings me enormous stimulation and freedom. I don’t live with strong colours – although I love making them – and I don’t like things to be too ordered. I much prefer a home to feel like a workshop for living, with endless possibilities for change. HB FOR STORE DETAILS SEE WHERE TO BUY PAGE

HEART OF THE HOME For the cosiest kitchen, go for brown. We’re not talking old-fashioned wooden cupboards but rather a modern take with rosy brown cabinetry blending with matching tongue-and-groove walls. Keep the floors light and introduce touches of white, such as this marble-topped table, to avoid the ‘cave’ look. For a similar larder cupboard, try the Suffolk 1100mm larder, £3,515, Neptune
BARE HYGGE Swap traditional cool Scandi tones for some with a warmer vibe and you’ll achieve a cosy feel without sacrificing the pared-back aesthetic. Choose furniture with clean lines, and add sculptural interest with quirky accessories and plants. Lagoon module sofa corners, £1,249 each; sofa chair, £775; pouf, £475; Rillo podium, £225; all Broste Copenhagen

MOTHER EARTH While brown is often an accent colour in bedrooms, making it the hero shade can pay dividends as the rich, earthy colour relaxes and calms. Charlie headboard in Isla Grouse velvet, from £1,190, Neptune House Beautiful NOVEMBER 2020 7
NOW YOU SEE IT… Want to go dark but not keen on the thought of a stark white radiator spoiling the effect? Simply paint it the same shade as the wall behind and it will melt into the background. Wall and radiator painted in Pontefract pure flat emulsion, £50/2.5L; door painted in Pontefract architect’s eggshell, £68/2.5L; both Paint & Paper Library
DEEP PURPLE The colour of royalty, purple looks luxe in any room – even the kitchen – while using a paler lilac above the units makes the room seem taller. Cupboard doors painted in premixed Aubusson Blue cupboard paint, £41.95/2.5L, and Emperor’s Silk chalk paint, £21.95/2.5L; wall painted in Antoinette chalk paint, £21.95/2.5L; all Annie Sloan
