top 5 tidying tricks INTRODUCING

The Container Store x KonMari Collection–exclusively designed by Marie Kondo!

1

2

ELIMINATE CLUTTER The way you store your items is an expression of gratitude for all they do for you—day in and day out. So give them a cozy spot to kick back and relax!

SHOJI COLLECTION These functional and elegant bamboo organizers are perfect for storing, sorting and displaying. They'll add a refined touch to your closet, pantry, bathroom or office.

3

OPTIMIZE “DRAWER” STORAGE When storing clothing, use large boxes for jeans and sweaters, medium-sized boxes for T-shirts and shorts, and small ones for intimates. Adjust the fold to match the height of your box and pack your items snugly.

JOYFUL COLLECTION “When envisioning my ideal storages boxes, I knew they should be simple and beautiful— with a touch of whimsy —and fit easily into a hikidashi, which means ‘drawer’ in Japanese.” —Marie Kondo

4

DESIGNATE SPOTS FOR EVERY ITEM

ORGANIZE BASED ON YOUR ROUTINE

In the kitchen, aim for ease of cleaning. Keep work surfaces clear and try to store all ingredients and utensils in cupboards or on shelves.

Creating a calm environment will enhance both productivity and joy. Identify the items that are crucial to getting your work done, and assign a specific spot for each of them.

BAMBOO KITCHEN COLLECTION A tidy kitchen makes cooking easier and more fun—and these organizers, made from sustainable bamboo, will keep your spices and flatware neat and accessible.

OFFICE COLLECTION This full desktop assortment offers a variety of sizes and materials to design the workspace that suits you best!

5 GET YOUR KIDS INVOLVED Let’s face it, kids come with their fair share of messes. The good news? If they see you tidying with a smile, they’ll think of it as a positive everyday activity that helps maintain a comfortable home.

KAWAII COLLECTION “Kawaii means ‘cute’ in Japanese and these cotton bins, handmade bookshelves and more were designed to encourage young ones to tidy up on their own!” —Marie Kondo

A favorite tip: If you’re painting an older wall or furniture that’s not in great shape, go with a flat finish. The glossier it is, the more imperfections you’ll see.

It’s calming, so it’s great for focusing on work, but it would be beautiful in a kitchen or mudroom, too.” —Jodi Morton, 2to5 Design, Evanston, IL

“An airy green works nicely in a family room where the homeowners were up for something unexpected. The chair-rail molding is the same color, but with a glossier finish than the matte on the walls. beautify a closet To score neatness as satisfying as her crafts supply stash, L.A.–based Kelly Mindell of @studiodiy did a coordinated mix of baskets: larger pom-pom ones from Target hide her Cricut stuff, and square kinds from The Little Market hold basics like beads, yarn, and modeling clay. “The woven material connects them and my tropical theme!”

create a cozier bathroom “A white sink and white tile can look stark,” says designer Kristina Crestin of HGTV’s Farmhouse Fixer. For more warmth in a Boston, MA, client’s bathroom, she filled a rattan Target basket with fluffy Turkish towels. It’s ventilated enough to let bath toys dry out when towels are in the wash.

make laundry easier For a family of five plus two dogs in Chanhassen, MN, a 15-inchby-24-inch seagrass tote turned basket with leather handles was a must for hauling items. Besides, a basic plastic bin wasn’t going to do it once designer Jennifer Horstman elevated the room with whimsical wallpaper by Designers Guild. “I like how the basket’s black stripes echo the floor’s charcoal gray,” she says.

style an entry Because the one in the home of Canadian blogger Jessica Sara Morris of White Picket Farmhouse is smallish, she DIYed a petite bench from oldgrowth cedar and tucked a water-hyacinth basket below from Canadian Tire for shoes. fill a bare spot Baskets with lids can be stacked to make an impact, as in this Salt Lake City, UT, home. “They add just the right amount of color in an otherwise minimalist room,” says designer Shea McGee. (Try Nina Nest on Etsy for a similar look.) They’re also a good way to hide phone chargers and cords—and keep the TV remote from disappearing.

28 HGTV Magazine

They’ve come in handy since forever, and these woven wonders often make us feel nostalgic. “Baskets can remind us of happy times—your mother and grandma probably had some at home,” says Samuel Gosling, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at The University of Texas at Austin who studies the meaning of decor. People may also be comforted by their hypnotic weave and earthy elements. Says Gosling, “It’s the same reason we put up pictures of the ocean—we’re drawn to things that remind us of nature.”

make t cool

This DIY caught our eye on Instagram, so we had to get the details.

A hollow shelf hides the fabric when it’s tucked away.

The shade gets rolled up and the TV swings out for family movie night!

Tommy Bahama palm leaf fabric, found on Amazon, gives off chill vibes.

For easy maneuvering, there’s a dowel rod in here.

A thrift store find is painted the same color as the walls (Ultra Pure White by Behr).

THE DIYER: Amanda Walker of @dwellaware “My goal was to transform the big TV in our living room from eyesore to art. First I built a floating shelf with scraps of wood, complete with an interior ledge for the rolled-up shade to rest on. I cut the fabric, hemmed it, sewed a pocket for a dowel below and loops on top, then attached the loops to screws inside the shelf and hung the shade. It instantly cleans up the room when it’s down—and it’s a lot easier to control my kids’ screen time!” 32 HGTV Magazine

the question people love to ask me Friends, family, fans: They all hit up HGTV stars for advice. This time the pros are sharing their best tips with you. what are some great exterior house colors? “I’ve been seeing a lot of dusty blues lately. I’ve also noticed more pale gray– and sage-color homes, and less dark, dramatic tones. This might have to do with people leaning toward a lighthearted and uplifting feel. The house Brian and I are building is light gray with a turquoise front door, because a pop is always fun and on trend!”

how do you deal when you and your partner have different tastes? “I joke that I’m half relationship counselor and half designer! If you give in too much, you may end up with a style neither of you like. For big decisions, I encourage clients to find common ground. Take tile: If one person likes a bold pattern and the other likes something subtle, they could do veined marble countertops that continue into the backsplash for an interesting look that’s still neutral. Problem solved.” Jasmine Roth, Help! I Wrecked My House

34 HGTV Magazine

Mika Kleinschmidt, 100 Day Dream Home

what’s a good way to get into flipping houses?

how can I improve my home on a budget without renovating? “One word: paint. Bold colors or a fresh coat of white are game changers. Also take a look at the fixtures around your house— doorknobs, light switch plates, and floor registers can be switched out like jewelry. Curb appeal tweaks will make a real difference too. Think about a new mailbox and house numbers. And maybe it’s obvious, but clear the clutter. Neat spaces always seem bigger.”

“My flipping career started with a $35,000 cottage that was full of potential. It’s all about the right project at the right price! Educate yourself on renos and financing—research online, read books, contact local flippers. Find properties by tapping friends or social networks, and don’t rush into anything. Once you have your eye on a place, a contractor can evaluate the cost of the work if you’re not doing it yourself. When it’s time to sell, work with a real estate agent to check similar homes on the market to price it. Rooting for you!”

does my hardware all have to be the same finish?

“That’s a big no! Mixing the finishes of cabinet knobs, faucets, and light fixtures is very stylish. Stick to two types—polished nickel and brass are a terrific combo. I like to say, ‘Just make sure everyone has a friend’ to pull the look together. If kitchen drawer pulls are bronze, maybe your light fixtures are too.”

what are your favorite sources for lighting?

which vintage pieces look great in any style of home? “Smaller items such as side tables, especially mid-century ones that have those clean lines, are really versatile and can seamlessly blend into either traditional or modern decor. In a kitchen, I’ll put antique cutting boards on a countertop—they’re charming. And vintage rugs, whether they’re Moroccan, Persian, or kilim, add a stylish sense of history to a room.”

“I like Shades of Light because their lights are fresh and the prices are great. For industrial or farmhouse designs, try Rejuvenation. Circa Lighting is my go-to when I want something that screams luxury. A tip for anyone looking to save some money and make a big impact: Buy multiples of a simple, inexpensive pendant and hang them together at staggered heights for the look of one fancy fixture.”

picking white paint for a room is hard— how do I decide?!

“Consider what’s in the room. A warm white goes well with woods and earthy tones, and a cooler one is good with bright furniture or accessories. Check the undertone—hold a chip next to something that’s pure white, like a sheet of printer paper. Warm whites can have a pink or yellow tint, and cool ones may appear bluish or greenish. When in doubt, pick a white with few undertones.”

what helps sell a house the fastest? “Trust your real estate agent to determine the best price and don’t push to price it higher. Make your house universally appealing by packing up at least half of your books and clothes and all family photos—you want potential buyers to visualize their life there. Offer a thorough virtual tour of the house with professional photos, and be as flexible as possible about visits. The more people who view your home, the better the chance of an offer…or a few.”

is there a good way to make a living room kid-friendly and stylish? “I have five young kids, so I know the pain of spills! A high-quality leather sofa is the best for enduring lots of activity and looking chic as it gets jumped on. If you have upholstered chairs, be sure to apply a protective treatment. I keep kid stuff, like board games, contained in an antique trunk passed down in the family—it has style all its own.”

how do I redo my kitchen so it won’t look dated for a long time? “Luckily, picking new countertops isn’t the same as picking new jeans— kitchen trends last a lot longer! Shakerstyle cabinets, hardwood or woodlook floors, and subway tile all stand the test of time. When it comes to layout, open concept is here to stay. The kitchen and living room remain the heart of the home.”

fun decorating wall color Green by Rust-Oleum Chalkboard

Brittany Goodman @thegoodmanhouse

chalkboard scallop wall “I knew I wanted a chalkboard wall, and I’d always wanted to try scallop detailing,” says Brittany. “Together, they’re really playful!” Bonus cute points: a chalk-drawn plant trailing out of a pot. THE DIY DETAILS Using a laser level, Brittany penciled a horizontal line across the wall then painted the area below it with a roller. Next she drew a half circle 7 ½ inches wide on cardstock, cut it out, used it to trace the border in pencil, and filled in the scallops.

metallic wallpapered wall

A pattern with gold crosshatch circles by Hygge & West for CB2 couldn’t be more glam, and it helps a room that’s not a perfect box look seamless. “The largescale pattern makes the space feel bigger too,” says Natalie. THE DIY DETAILS Natalie hired a pro, but if you hang your own wallpaper, have these key tools handy: a utility knife to cut straight lines and a plastic wallpaper spreader to smooth as you go.

Jessie Estes @jessiegirlhome

rainbow shiplap wall When Jessie’s 4-year-old daughter asked for a room that was all rainbows, Jessie happily obliged by painting white boards she had previously installed—with 17 colors! Pool noodles hot-glued together and wrapped with yarn

Jennifer White @chicmisfits

THE DIY DETAILS Jessie bought sample pots from Sherwin-Williams (she used their ColorSnap Visualizer to get the combo right). She painted the boards one at a time with a 2-inch brush. “Using painter’s tape would have taken way too long,” she says. Her hack: She placed a 6-inch putty knife between them, and as she painted, she moved it along as a buffer to prevent paint from getting onto the next plank.

fully stenciled wall

THE DIY DETAILS Jennifer painted the wall saffron yellow (Gold Seal by Valspar) and let it dry for 24 hours. Then she tacked the stencil (from Royal Design Studio) onto the center of the wall with painter’s tape. She applied black chalk paint (Rich Black by FolkArt Home Decor) with a small foam roller and continued moving the stencil around to finish the wall.

the absolutely-awfully-OMG-wrong paint color THE FAIL “We spent hours researching paint colors for our living room and finally picked a charcoal gray. After we uploaded a photo of the room to a preview site, we jumped in and started painting. We immediately saw it was darker than we’d expected but tried not to freak out and hoped it would dry OK. Nope! It’s like living in a cave. We want to redo it in a lighter shade, but now we’re worried that testing samples over the darker paint won’t be accurate and we’ll once again end up with a color we hate.” —Kristen, Philadelphia, PA 50 HGTV Magazine

THE FIX “Online tools can give an idea of how a color will look, but you have to see it on your walls to know for sure,” says Clare paint founder Nicole Gibbons. Shades vary dramatically depending on a room’s lighting and furniture. To test colors, pros recommend painting your top two favorites on white poster board (at 22 by 28 inches, they’re sizable, so you can assess even when placed on dark walls). Tack them up with painter’s tape and move them around over a few days. When you’re ready for the new shade, prime all your walls first. ILLUSTRATIONS BY CHRIS LONG WRITTEN BY LIZ KRIEGER

oh noooo— peekaboo curtains THE FAIL “When we bought our place, I got full-length white linen curtains for our bedroom window. I didn’t put much thought into the width—I was mainly concerned with the length—and it shows. They don’t completely block light, and we’re waking up at the crack of dawn. Help!” —Anna, Evanston, IL THE FIX It’s easy enough: Add one or two more panels to fill the gaps. You want the total width of your curtains to be at least twice the width of your window. “A rod correctly installed into a stud or with anchors in drywall can easily support several curtains,” says LeeAnn Baker, a designer in Seattle, WA. If you’re up for it, the panels can be sewn together or connected with hook-and-loop fasteners so you’re only pulling one swath of fabric when you open or close them. To give sheerish curtains more light-blocking power, sew blackout material onto their backs or tap a tailor to do the job.

caution: floor may cause dizziness THE FAIL “I finally got motivated to redo my dingy porcelain bathroom tile. After applying three coats of primer and a white base coat with porch-and-floor paint, I filled in the stencil pattern with blue porch paint. But the lines didn’t come out crisp and the blurriness is driving me crazy!” —Amanda, Knightdale, NC THE FIX “There was probably too much paint on the roller when the stenciling was done, the most common reason for a pattern that bleeds,” says Geoff Sharp, owner of Sharper Impressions Painting, which serves the Midwest and Southeast. The best plan? A do-over. Start by lightly sanding the tiles with a fine-grit sandpaper. Repaint the base coat and let it cure for 24 to 48 hours, then stencil on the pattern. “Using porch paint for the base and the stenciling is a good choice since it’s made to hold up to water,” says Sharp. Repaint the stencil pattern using a foam roller. For the cleanest edges, after dipping the roller in the tray, roll off excess paint on paper towels and avoid pressing down too hard when applying. Then quickly lift up the stencil in one smooth move while the paint is still a little wet.

window’s stuck, now what? THE FAIL “After I painted my interior window trim, the windows were sealed shut. This is both annoying and unsafe! How can I unstick them without ruining the paint job?” —Andrew, Huntsville, AL THE FIX Run a utility knife along the seams, says Timisha Porcher, who writes the blog ToolBox Divas. If that doesn’t do the trick, wedge a trim puller (it looks like a spatula with a bent tip) under the window and pull up, first placing cardboard beneath to protect the sill. Next time you paint trim, remove any paint that drips in the gaps with a damp cloth and leave the window open as it dries.

how not to hang a TV THE FAIL “Before I put up a new TV on our bedroom wall, I did every measurement four times, except the depth of the wall. Luckily I walked into the room next door after the first anchor screw went in because it went completely through the wall! I removed it so nobody would maim themselves, but what am I supposed to do now?” —Peter, Jefferson City, MO THE FIX First patch up the hole in the wall with spackle or DAP Eclipse rapid wall repair patches, says HGTV contractor Chip Wade. Then grab a stud finder. “For a TV to be secure, it needs to be mounted on the two studs in the wall closest to where it will be centered—that’s why a TV mount has holes every inch or so,” he says. “To hang, use lag bolts that are at least 1 ½ inches long. I like to put two into each stud, and I predrill holes for them. The bolts will be secure.”

that photo display is driving me up a… THE FAIL “I made a gallery wall in our family room with a sports theme for my husband. I centered his framed New York City Marathon race bib, a photo, and a medal over the sofa, then hung three sports magazine covers on either side, but it just looks bare and…wrong.” —Peggy, Livingston, NJ THE FIX “It’s great to pick a beloved item and anchor a gallery wall around it,” says Angela Belt, a designer in West Hartford, CT. “You just don’t want an arrangement that’s perfectly symmetrical—imbalance keeps a gallery wall interesting.” In this case, putting magazine covers in different-size frames with mats and loosely clustering them around the centerpiece would jazz things up. “Hang items about 8 to 10 inches above the sofa and no more than 4 to 5 inches apart or it can look like a chessboard,” says Belt.

one shower tile install down the drain THE FAIL “My husband and I watch a lot of home reno shows, so we felt confident about tiling our shower. We installed ceramic tiles pretty easily, spread grout over them, and had dinner without wiping off the excess. Big mistake—it all hardened up. Eventually I got most off the tiles, but the grout in between was crusty and uneven. I’ve never gotten around to fixing it.” —Susan, Arvada, CO THE FIX “It won’t take long, Susan!” says Wade. Sponge grout haze remover all over the tile and grout (it’s faster than targeting just the grout and won’t hurt the tile), then wipe off with a clean sponge. Use an oscillating tool with a diamond dust bit to shave off about ⅛ inch of grout. Dampen tiles with a clean sponge (it helps grout come off easier), apply a fresh layer of grout, and wipe tiles clean within 10 minutes. 52 HGTV Magazine

how bad is it to not shovel snow off your deck? Next time you’re sipping hot cocoa in your kitchen as you peer out at some fluffy snow, take comfort in knowing that well-maintained decks built to code shouldn’t collapse under a pileup of powder, says Lowe’s project expert Hunter Macfarlane. Shoveling could actually be worse—all-metal or metal-edge shovels can create a flurry of scratches and gouges on wood or composite deck material that you might not even notice until spring, when the snow melts. “If snow reaches the railing and sits there for days,” he says, “consider doing some shoveling only to avoid aging the deck more quickly.” Whenever you need to carve out an exit path or a route to your grill, a corn broom (for lighter snow) and a nylon push broom (for heavier snow) will do it gently.

how bad is it to leave damp clothes in the washing machine? If only at dinner do you recall the laundry you popped in before breakfast, it’s not a total wash. It typically takes 12 hours before a damp load begins to grow mildew and smell funky, says textile expert Patric Richardson, who runs The Laundry Evangelist website. Even if you forget about it for days (oops!), a rewash with a scoop of oxygen bleach will freshen things right back up. In case the machine smells dank, treat it to a deep clean: Pour a gallon of vinegar and a pound of borax into the drum and run it through the longest, hottest cycle. Oh, and if you’ve never fully explored your machine’s features, check for a fan option; some keep air circulating up to 24 hours after a cycle ends.

It limbers you up, it releases mental tension, and the increased blood flow to muscles gives you more energy to start your day.

Slow and steady wins the race. “If you don’t get injured by going from zero to 60, at a minimum you’re going to have a pretty miserable experience,” says Cedric Bryant, Ph.D., president and chief science officer of the American Council on Exercise. You could pull or strain a muscle, or end up so achy you might be put off from sticking with it. Think 30 minutes of a low-intensity cardio three or four times a week (pacing rule of thumb: you should be able to talk while working out but not sing) and two days a week of a resistance workout. To avoid feeling frustrated by, say, how sluggish your mile is, says Bryant, “focus on checking the mental box that you got moving!”

how bad is it to work out intensely after not working out much for a long time?

It’s no wonder people get confused by this veggie’s split personality: Recipes often don’t specify which part to use. The white bulbs have a stronger flavor, but if you’re cooking you’ll be fine with chopping up the entire scallion since the taste mellows with heat and blends in, says cooking instructor Pamela Salzman, author of Quicker Than Quick. When using scallions in a salad or as a garnish for soup or avocado toast, stick with the green shoots or the dish will taste too onion-y. Salzman’s favorite way to use up leftovers of either part: “Give them a quick sauté for an egg scramble or put in place of onion in guacamole or salsa.”

how bad is it to give small amounts to various charities instead of all to one? Obviously, any charitable donation is appreciated—and nonprofits especially need it now, when cash flow is slow on the heels of end-of-year holiday donations. That said, charity pros are all for focusing on one or two charities. A larger donation will allow an organization to offer more services or do more work, and will translate into a more significant impact, says Anna Pruitt, Ph.D., an expert at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. She recommends the 80/20 formula: “Every year, budget 80% of donations to the couple of groups you’re most passionate about, and reserve 20% for discretionary or urgent situations”—say, a friend posts a GoFundMe for someone whose house had a fire. Ideally, says Pruitt, set up monthly automatic contributions to your choice charities to keep the funds flowing.

ack when Abby Luskie and her husband, Clayton, first saw this Houston, TX, home, they knew it was meant to be…sort of. “The windows were rotting, the kitchen was awkwardly laid out, and the ‘updated’ finishes done by the previous homeowners were straight out of the ’90s,” she says. “My parents are veteran fixer-uppers, so I grew up around that. But at 121 years old, this was the most ancient house I’d come across!” The interior had clean, simple, Craftsman-style lines, embraced in the early 1900s as the opposite of ornate Victorian homes. Room by room, the couple worked with designer Barbara Sweetser on upgrades. They chose a serene blue and creamy white palette, blended vintage and modern finds, and revitalized the pine and oak floors and other character-rich details. Relics of the past remind Abby that there’s been a lot of life lived here: “They make a home feel like it has a soul.” HGTV Magazine 61

kitchen This was the only room that got gutted, though the footprint stayed the same. White subway tile from Daltile was the perfect backsplash choice—timeless yet fresh in a herringbone pattern. Those Calacatta Gold marble countertops are aging imperfectly and awesomely: “I love the etching and marks they get,” says Abby, much in the same way the floors have tales to tell with their nicks and scrapes. While the original window and polished nickel pendants are of different eras, their curves echo the archways throughout the home—not typical of Craftsman homes, but beautiful.

ben and sam’s bedroom It’s not just a bunk bed from IKEA—it’s the boys’ favorite hideaway. To make mornings go smoother, Abby sewed the bottom edge of blankets to the bottom edge of fitted sheets. “Literally all they have to do is yank it up and their beds look great!” she says. The geometric polypropylene rug from Rugs USA is both indestructible and soft underfoot. Plexiglass on the window keeps it safe from ball throwing.

backyard Abby saw a similar playhouse on Pinterest, and she and Clayton built a 10-foot-by10-foot pine version—a mini Craftsman! Pom-pom garlands and a slide kid it up. That gloriously green lawn is artificial turf: “Five years into our fight to grow healthy grass, we gave up,” she says. After searching high and low for a table to fit the fort, all four grandparents teamed up to make the teal picnic table; sometimes the kids dine out there. HGTV Magazine 67

Brass elements, from the bedside sconces to the mirror on the vanity, warm up the space. Abby’s prized feature? The wardrobes (also IKEA). “As in many old homes, our closets are small,” she says. “These doubled the storage space—I sent a friend a photo of the inside after they were installed!”

A Victorian parlor was a room for ladies to gather in and have tea. Catherine and Bryan chill here with wine at night.

Chesterfields were trendy in Victorian times; this one is from West Elm.

he likes vintage, he likes modern. As a home-renovating couple in Columbus, OH, Catherine and Bryan Williamson have perfected the art of compromise. Enter a dilapidated Victorian built in 1900. “We had always admired the old homes in our neighborhood and I’d dreamed of bringing one back to life,” says Catherine, who grew up playing hide-and-seek in the nooks and crannies of her grandparents’ Victorian. Bryan and Catherine bought their house in 2017, and, in the following two years, Bryan watched Catherine have a good old time—in his words, “This project was a lot of ‘Catherine got her way’!” The house was dim and dingy. Previous tenants had stripped away doors, mantels, and banisters. To bring glory back to The Blonde Vic, as they dubbed it, the two tore down walls, replaced windows, repaired, painted, and embellished, embellished, and embellished some more. Color is generally spare to let architectural details stand out. The end result: about as up to date as a Victorian gets. HGTV Magazine 73

o h, ! that can go yeah in a kitchen For an unexpectedly unique look, mix in stuff typically found in living rooms, bedrooms, even bathrooms. Mind: blown.

fluffy throws “We live in a pretty small house in Rhode Island and I went all out with cozy elements,” says blogger Jess Ann Kirby (@thecozyranch). “Sheepskin throws warm up the metal stools in our kitchen. People always wonder if they get gross. They don’t! We just shake out crumbs and spot-clean.”

a lamp Soft light with morning coffee, task light for cooking, a pretty glow in the evening: This lamp does a kitchen in Greenville, SC, all sorts of good. Designer Amanda Louise Campbell found the wood base at a vintage store and the 12-inch shade at Etsy shop LampShadey. A few books give it a boost. “I’m a serial stacker!” she says. “The look softens up the quartzite below.”

a mirror (or two) “Although people often don’t think of using mirrors in kitchens, they bring in light,” says designer Lidia Van Zyl. She hung oval black metal ones on either side of the window in this lakeside Canadian home, with sisal rope for a nautical touch (the Trent Austin Design pair on Wayfair are similar). Also nice: “Viewed from a certain angle, you see the water reflected.”

a runner To brighten her Highland, UT, kitchen and elongate a narrow-ish spot, homeowner Ali Hynek laid down a Moroccan wool runner from Canary Lane. “I change it out with the season, but this one is especially great next to my green cabinets,” she says. (They’re painted Brooklyn by Behr.) “The setup always catches guests’ eyes.”

a towel rack Neatness counts for northern Utah blogger Cami Graham (@camitidbits): “I’m picky about stuff on countertops,” she says. “But it’s nice to have things handy and after I remodeled and saw the empty end of my island, I thought, Hmmm…” Her smart solution? An IKEA towel bar, with added S-hooks for cutting boards—convenient for letting them dry.

a giant chandelier When designer Audrey Tehauno walked through this Houston, TX, Victorian with her client, she was most awed by the vintage kitchen chandelier installed by a previous homeowner. “Leaves and flowers seem fancy, not fuddy-duddy, because aged layers of gold paint give it a beautiful patina,” says Tehauno. “If it were polished metal, it would be too over the top!”

a bookcase This mid-century piece used to live in the living room. Then blogger Stephanie Klein (@cozyandclutterfree) in Lancaster, PA, got desperate for kitchen storage. “I put canisters of ingredients on the shelves, and mixing bowls and pie plates in the cabinets,” she says. “Now it’s my all-in-one baking center.”

a picture light While reno-ing this kitchen in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, designer Lauren Leonard had a blank wall to fill. “I decided that a print with a picture light would be distinct and add ambient light,” she says. She had the wiring done before the tile install, then up went a polished nickel one from Visual Comfort.

an upholstered bench “We wanted a cool seat as comfy as a lounge chair,” say designers Kirsten Krason and Erin Morgan of the 5-foot-long bench they had custom-made for a home in South Jordan, UT. Since it has outdoor fabric (by Pindler), it’s pretty indestructible. And, of course, irresistible: “Anyone could sit here for a while and not want to leave.”
