I
’ve always loved this time of year. After months of living by the mantra ‘appreciate the small stuff ’, I’m savouring all those signs of spring that lift the spirits and turn our thoughts to giving our homes a refresh. It’s such a joy to fling open the doors and windows – and while those welcome bursts of early spring sunshine might highlight the dusty corners and tired paintwork, there’s a sense of renewed energy and optimism in the air that has me reaching for my colour charts and fabric samples. All of a sudden, I’m itching to get on with those decorating projects I’ve been planning all winter. This month, I’m particularly inspired by The Colour Trends feature, page 19, which includes advice from some of the UK’s top interiors experts on how to use the new paint shades. Someone else who knows a thing or two about colour is Charlotte Gueniau, founder of Danish interiors brand Rice. Her gorgeous home on page 50 is a confident mix of bold colours and vibrant accessories that seem like they shouldn’t work together, but combine beautifully in her skilled hands. ‘Just be playful,’ she says. ‘If you don’t like the colour of a wall, repaint it. A can of paint costs the same as a nice bottle of wine.’ That sentiment has definitely encouraged me to be a bit more adventurous and experimental with my colour schemes – how about you? Above all, though, it’s clear how much enjoyment Charlotte and her family get from their home. That’s the key to everything really – no matter what colour your walls – and the HB team is here to bring you all the very best ways to do just that. Enjoy the issue and see you next month.

Feel good With a focus on strong, rich and uplifting colours, Jessica Osborne’s fabrics and wallpapers are designed to delight. Beginning life as ink drawings, her sketches become vivid patterns through digital development – refined and perfected until they’re just right, while retaining their charming hand-drawn effect.
Bermondsey handleless kitchen in Soft Ivory, House Beautiful at Homebase
Making it work With a love of printing and textiles from an early age, Jessica always dreamed of having her own business. After studying Textile Design for Interiors, she worked in interior styling before taking the plunge in 2018 to set up shop. ‘My favourite aspect of designing for interiors is when someone chooses my fabric or wallpaper for their home – it’s such a personal decision, which makes it so rewarding for me.’ Creative process Jessica seeks inspiration everywhere; her phone is filled with snaps taken while she is out and about, which might spark an idea for a pattern. A new collection inspired by geometrics is imminent, so watch this space! jessicaosborne.com

Stylist tip When decorating with bold colours, include tonal shades to achieve a relaxed feel. Layering cushions in cinnamon, caramel and pecan helps to soften the contrast and gives a more lived-in look.
SHADES OF EARTH AND SKY It may be bold, but this pairing is classic and timeless – and it’s perfect for bringing the benefits of the great outdoors into your home. O Brown and terracotta pigments create an incredibly grounding and stabilising decorating scheme. They help us reconnect with nature, bringing us back down to earth when we’re craving stability. O It’s no surprise that beautiful blue hues remind us of clear skies, brimming with positivity and calm. In our homes, they instil a sense of peace and serenity that’s ideal for the spaces where we want to relax. Pairing them with earthy tones replicates the relationship
between land and sky for a look that’s balanced and harmonious. O Textures are important too for bringing a scheme to life. Ceramics made from earthy terracotta clays contrast beautifully with ethereal blue glassware that catches the light. EXPERT GUIDE FIND THE BEST EARTH AND SKY SHADES ‘Blues paired with terracotta shades is a big new trend for 2021,’ muses Robert Whitaker, creative and product director at Claybrook. ‘This was a popular look in the 1980s and, as with fashion, it’s coming back in a big way.’ Robert offers the following advice for taking the plunge… 1 Mother Nature always knows best, which is why sandy, earthy tones pair so beautifully with sky blues and oceanic shades. They work well in rooms where we crave a connection with nature – bedrooms and bathrooms especially will benefit from an elemental boost of colour. 2 When building a colour scheme, start with one or two key shades – in this instance, these will be rich sienna tones. Any more than this and you risk hues disappearing into each other. Next, bring in a colour counterpoint – this is a brighter, crisper hue that will help to keep your space fresh.

3 Darker colours can absorb light, but embrace the look by using it in rooms where you’re aiming to create a mood and add depth. However, if you want to introduce an airy feel into this palette, changing your floor to a paler shade will enhance the sense of space and light. 4 With bold colour choices, it’s even more important to sample a range of paint. Use painted swatches – these can be pinned up in different light zones and spaces and will give you the clearest idea as to how the colour will interact in your room at different times of the day.

E X PA N D Y O U R H O R I Z O N S It’s no secret that, used in the right way, neutrals are anything but boring – and as there are so many greens to play around with, we’re pleased to give this trend a big welcome. O Green is incredibly versatile and easy to work into an existing neutral scheme. Consider paler shades, such as pistachio or soft sage as a fresher alternative to off-whites and taupes. O For the past few years, houseplants have become something of a staple ingredient in many of our interiors, not least for the all-important hit of mood-boosting green they provide. Now,
we’re seeing this translate across every area of our homes – from accessories to paint colours and everything in between – as now, more than ever, we seek a deeper connection with nature. O Darker shades of forest and khaki can be used in place of charcoal or black as an accent to bring drama to a scheme of rustic neutrals.

SUBTLE TOUCH You don’t need swathes of green to tap into its beauty – this perfectly peaceful bedroom is a great example of how seamlessly green accents can layer into a neutral scheme. Stylist tip When decorating with a single flat colour, lift the whole look with accessories in varied heights and mixed materials. Glass is great for reflecting the light, while marble and stone shapes help to ground a display.
TAKE THE PLUNGE No matter how much we love a bold colour, the idea of using it on large items can be daunting. However, verdant hues are proven classics and whether you opt for them on a sofa or a sideboard, their ability to blend within a neutral palette means they always look great and never go out of style. Using them in surrounding accessories in natural materials makes leafy shades feel right at home. Bronwyn four-seater sofa, £1,399; Nordic coffee table, £299; both Furniture Village

Invisible Green absolute matt emulsion, £47/2.5L, Little Greene
1 The trick to successfully combining green with neutrals is to select shades that contain subtle, yet similar undertones of green. This will ensure you create a tonal and harmonious scheme. 2 Olive green is ideal for east-facing rooms – the cool light picks up both the blue and yellow undertones that make the colour read so beautifully. South-facing rooms receive much warmer light, so be mindful that rich greens may be too intense in these spaces. 3 Expand the possibilities – use paint to highlight architectural features, such as ceiling roses and cornices, or add colour above or below a dado rail. Painting the ceiling in a soothing green hue is a brilliant way to create a serene atmosphere, as well as drawing the eye upwards and giving the illusion of additional height. 4 Greens and neutrals work so well because we’re used to seeing this combination in nature – so play to this relationship by using in spaces that look out onto a garden. It’ll extend the feeling of nature into your room for a calming, yet airy feel.

R I C H A N D FA B U L O U S These gorgeous hues bring a grown-up feel. O As with many of the finer things in life, these colours are often best enjoyed in moderation. Think about how to introduce them in areas that won’t overwhelm, but will still pack a punch. However, if you want to go to town, it’s hard to beat a carpet or wall in a fabulous statement colour. O Think about balancing the impact of these colours by highlighting architectural details or separate areas, such as above a shelf.
If you want to steer clear of sugary tones, look for colours with brown pigments and stick to a more refined, earthy palette. O And don’t forget that the less impactful shades, such as soft raspberry, will work brilliantly as warm neutrals. Team with darker greys and charcoals for a sophisticated finish. O

Look to nature for ideas when choosing colour combinations in this palette. It’s no surprise that earthier hues are natural companions to berry tones while fresher shades of mint and teal offer contrast and lightness.
CHARACTER BUILDING For an altogether more modern feel, consider a plaster-effect wall mural. In these majestic tones, this one would bring a sense of faded grandeur to even the most contemporary of spaces. Opt for furniture in warm oak and luxurious marble to enhance the opulent feel. EXPERT GUIDE FIND THE BEST BERRY SHADES ‘Purple tones help boost creativity and problemsolving, while the colour red is thought to stimulate energy and confidence – so these warm berry shades are the perfect choice for creating a space of comfort and positivity,’ explains Abby Hesketh, paint and colour specialist at Graham & Brown. Here, she shares some ideas of how to introduce these delicious hues into your home:
Rubus matt emulsion, £51/2.5L, Ateli er Ellis
Dorian Gray matt emulsion, £38/2.5L, Graham & Brown.
1 In a small and cosy snug, these rich tones will absorb any available light to create a cocooning effect that’s both soothing and uplifting. Alternatively, the strength of these shades also means they’re perfect for bringing definition and interest to well-lit, vast or open-plan spaces. 2 Consider the light your room receives – north- and east-facing rooms will make reds appear deeper and more plum-like, whereas in southand west-facing rooms they will read a lot more vibrant and pink. 3 For a sophisticated scheme with a softer impact, go tonal. Introduce paler shades of pink throughout the room to gently lift even the deepest of burgundies, alongside soft neutrals such as taupe and greyed off-whites that have similar warm red undertones.
Merlot matt emulsion, £38/2.5L, Graham & Brown
Bell Pink matt emulsion, £51/2.5L, Ateli er Ellis
4 On the other hand, if you’re looking to accentuate and freshen up this palette, it’s all about contrast. Pair with pure white, adding in glacial shades of teal to create a scheme that feels opulent and temptingly luxurious.

ith an interiors career steeped in colour, fun and seasonal updates, Charlotte Gueniau, founder and CEO of Rice, was never going to have a lacklustre family home. And for her husband Philippe, and children Max and Selma there’s never a dull moment in this space, which Charlotte has filled with bold, bright colours, statement features and, most recently, a beautiful array of her own-designed contemporary wallpapers. ‘We originally moved here for very sensible and practical reasons – it was in the perfect location for the children to be able to get to school easily and hang out with friends as they grew up,’ says Charlotte. ‘We found the house via a real estate friend – it has high ceilings and plenty of space and that suited our needs at the time.’ Charlotte quickly filled the house with painted backdrops and functional and fun
homeware from her collection. As the children grew and their needs changed, the house adapted, and in the same way the family’s shifts impacted on their home, Charlotte explains how her own style has developed as the children grew into their teens – and beyond. ‘When the children were young I was a big believer in using colour and paint as an easy way to update an interior, and when we first moved in, we did everything at once,’ explains Charlotte. ‘Now as we have all grown, my style is more curated – I’ve collected pieces over the years when travelling and I’m drawn to using more patterns to illustrate how I feel about an interior. I’ve really embraced using wallpaper as an instant feature idea in a room and work with the intricate designs to create interest or lift a dull space.’ Having loved the English country home look for a long time, Charlotte has always used her collections from Rice to great
DRAWING ROOM Charlotte (top) has created a beautiful scheme, with her vibrant Rice II One wallpaper working perfectly with the room’s period details, adding drama without dominating. to fit together. ‘I can throw all kinds of styles and shades into the mix here, and there’s enough light and space in the house for it to all work cohesively. There’s also a balance in every room. I’ve been careful to make sure to include some plain areas or textures so, despite there being so much to take in, it all blends together rather than fights.’ The fact that the family feel their home is still fresh and inspiring to live in after 10 years is very much down to Charlotte’s own style vibe. And having provided a such a lovely backdrop against which they have grown and blossomed, she is ready to take this on to the next stage. ‘I’ve loved every part of being in our home and am now embracing the “we are in the no toys, more party glasses” phase. We get so much enjoyment from sharing our home with each other, our friends and our family, and I think you get a sense of this as soon as you come in.’ HB See the Rice collection at ricebyrice.com

effect in the house, marrying humour with homeliness, but it was her foray into wallpaper design with the Netherlands based textile and wallpaper company Eijffinger, which allowed her to bring more of her own creations to the walls. ‘I’ve always loved a maximalist, Bohemian clash of designs and patterns and find it fun to mix vintage florals with retro furnishings or intricate artwork with quirky motifs. My first wallpaper collection was small and featured understated designs with some fun elements, folk art themes and illustrations. By the time I launched the second collection I had really found my design feet and there are dots, spots, glitter and scatters of floral and petal patterns, which I love to include around my home.’ And, in fact, what is really striking about Charlotte’s home is that despite how much colour there is – and as the palette shifts depending on the season – everything seems

illed with creative decorating ideas and interesting finds, this home is very different now to the characterless property Kathryn Bristow and Rob Law originally saw. ‘It was so plain, Rob actually thought there was nobody living in it, but they were just very tidy people who weren’t that interested in interiors,’ remembers Kathryn. However, the blank walls and unadorned spaces made an easy starting point for the couple to knock through rooms, add a small extension and start over in their own style. Kathryn’s go-to look is crisp, clean monochromes: ‘The more pared-back a space is, the more relaxing I find it,’ she says. However, she has warmed up grey backdrops with reclaimed textures, a few well-judged shots of citrus colour and vintage finds. In fact, Kathryn jokes that in another life she would have made a pretty good detective. ‘I love a bit of investigating,’ she says. ‘I can spend hours online, trying to track down a particular vintage light or item of furniture. And if I can’t I find what I want, I’ve been known to make it myself.’ Kathryn used her sleuth-like skills to unearth the set of retro Bertoia dining chairs in the kitchen, while the modern chandelier above demonstrates her knack for clever improvisation – it was welded from metal piping to her design, and wired up by an electrician. As for the dining table, Kathryn had very clear picture of what she wanted, but couldn’t find it. Her solution? She sourced a reclaimed church door that was just the right size and shape and then commissioned a local forge to make a set of steel

legs for it. Similarly, the kitchen cabinets are Ikea carcasses customised with more imaginative ply doors and concrete worktops. And as the man who invented Trunki children’s luggage, Rob is no slouch either, when it comes to thinking up clever, creative ideas. Kathryn and Rob moved here nine years ago, but spotted the apartment almost by accident. ‘We weren’t even thinking of moving because we hadn’t really finished doing up the place we were living in, which was also in Bristol,’ Kathryn says. ‘But I idly picked up the local property paper and saw a half-page ad for this flat. All it showed was the view from the back garden, but I immediately wanted to see more. I knew it would be good.’ Aside from redecorating and adding their own style, the couple also improved the bones of this Georgian home. Herringbone parquet has replaced the previous mish-mash of flooring, which included carpet and old concrete. They also knocked through from the living room to the kitchen and added a master suite in a two-storey extension. This was built into what had been an enclosed, high-walled courtyard at the back of their apartment and now houses a large bathroom, a dressing area and a mezzanine-level sleeping area above. A metal staircase with slim vertical balustrades keeps the look sharp. ‘I wanted it to feel like a grown-up space, away from the chaos of family life,’ says Kathryn. But even with grey walls and metal structures, the mood in this home never feels cold, thanks to myriad creative flourishes in all the rooms. of the front door. Open shelving in the kitchen is made from reclaimed timbers and, in the hallway, a message in decal lettering greets visitors as they hang up their coats. Entitled Le Mur du Couloir (the corridor wall), the paragraph carefully itemises the qualities, uses and exact colour of the wall and was inspired by the work of French design studio Be-Poles. ‘They created a set of everyday objects such as paper bags and boxes of matches and listed the “ingredients” of each in beautiful typography on the outside,’ explains Kathryn. ‘It’s my not-so-serious tribute to that clever idea.’ In this cool family-friendly environment, design is important, but never takes itself too seriously. ‘I love everything in our home, including the pricier pieces such as the sofa, but nothing is off limits,’ explains Kathryn. Which is just as well because their children love the sofa for different reasons. ‘During lockdown, it came into its own as their very own indoor soft play area,’ she smiles. HB

L
iving in a small flat in south London but looking to start a family, Caitriona and Shaun Roy set out to find a home that would suit them better. More space was obviously a key goal, but the couple were less clear on the area they should move to. ‘We searched as far afield as Hampshire and the Cotswolds,’ recalls Caitriona. But it was the family-friendly neighbourhood just a stone’s throw away from where they were living, with streets of period houses and an abundance of parks for their cockapoo Monty, that turned out to be ideal. ‘Shaun is an experienced property agent, so we felt confident in our choice,’ states Caitriona. The house itself has excellent bones, but the interior was outdated, so Caitriona transformed the uniformly white walls with shades of muted cream, blue and green. Within a year of moving in, baby Finn arrived, so Shaun and Caitriona put their renovation dreams on hold. Once life had settled down and after much thought, the couple decided the time was right to go ahead with the long-anticipated work on the house, including a basement extension, a new kitchen and the reconfiguration of the loft to make it a more usable space. Shortly after they had signed on the dotted line with their builder, Caitriona discovered they were expecting their second child. As the builders arrived in June, the couple implored them to try to stick to their promised six-month timescale and have the house ready for Caitriona’s due date in mid December. A small staircase led down to a cellar housing washing machines and lots of junk. The couple decided to dig out half the footprint of the house and installed a light well at the front, creating a utility room and a media room/playroom for the children, as well as a guest bedroom and shower room. In the loft, there was a small bedroom and ensuite. Originally, the plan was to make this floor into a space for the children, so they extended into the eaves and created a second bedroom with a bathroom. However, having noted the striking sunsets over south London, the couple decided to use it themselves as the master suite. ‘We’re using the second bedroom as a walk-in wardrobe now,’ Caitriona explains. Owning a rental property next door meant the family were able to stay there while keeping an eye on the building work. ‘It was easy to pop back and forth with Finn,’ says Caitriona. The new perspective also gave them the idea of turning the back end of the next door garden into parking for the main house. They kept their existing garden simple, with raised planters and Astroturf – perfect for the children’s football matches. Caitriona replaced the kitchen, as the one they’d inherited was a little dated and they wanted to make the room feel brighter. The new design incorporates an island with wraparound Carrara marble and units painted in a soft grey hue. They toyed with the idea of making the downstairs open plan, but in the end Caitriona felt the original layout worked well, and it suited their lifestyle to have the kitchen, family room and living room as three separate zones. ‘The bonus was that I was then able to have the fun of decorating three rooms, rather than just one!’ exclaims Caitriona. Although Caitriona has now returned to her job as a food and drinks PR, at the time of the renovation she was working as an interiors PR for companies such as Salvesen Graham and Olivine Life. This

experience influenced her approach to decorating, particularly her decisions regarding colour and texture. ‘Working alongside professionals has definitely made me braver with colour; I no longer hide behind neutrals,’ she states. Caitriona has introduced layers of textures – linen, velvet and wool – to the living room with highlights of green, orange and yellow with cushions, light shades and lamp bases. Miraculously the builders did keep their promise and the work finished on time, with baby Jonty greeting the world the following day. ‘He was just waiting to see which bedroom he’d be having, then he arrived,’ jokes Caitriona. When the family moved back in, they were able to transport everything over the fence from next door, including the sofa. But what followed was at least six months with the builders still in and out. ‘There was snagging – and things settling – that then needed fixing,’ recalls Caitriona. But the result is a spacious, bright and stylish family home. ‘We couldn’t be happier with the end result.’ HB

ith their son Dylan growing up fast and an extended family overseas, Jen Taylor, a designer, and her husband Hari, an architect, knew they would have to move to gain the extra bedroom they needed. Keen to stay in the area of south London where they were living in a former Peabody housing block of flats, they emailed their neighbours to see if anyone was interested in selling their property. ‘These are good quality purpose-built flats, the rooms all have great proportions with period features, and there’s a lovely communal garden, so we really wanted to remain here if possible,’ explains Jen. Luckily for the couple, a sale had just fallen through on a top-floor property. ‘We were next door but on the ground floor,’ says Jen. ‘We wanted a do-er upper and this place hadn’t been touched for decades. Then we saw the height of the loft and that sealed the deal, as we knew we would be able to extend into that space.’ And not only that, buying privately, rather than through an estate agent saved them money. With such good architectural credentials at stake, the main challenge was going to be where to site the staircase to the loft, which was to become the main bedroom and ensuite bathroom. ‘It was 78 housebeautiful.com/uk
going to be a bedroom and we couldn’t justify the cost of a dormer,’ explains Jen. ‘We knew we would have to install Velux windows instead and strengthen the joists.’ Once the couple had established where the drain would have to be positioned to connect to the existing services, they were able to plan the new layout. Keen to create a bright hallway and working to a tight budget, Jen and Hari decided to capitalise on the existing structure with a double-height space and a spectacular staircase that Hari would design. ‘We wanted to make a feature of the stairs,’ he says. ‘A solid balustrade would have blocked the light that floods in, and neither of us fancied glass; plywood offered a cost-effective yet elegant solution. The staircase also makes it feel more like a maisonette and there is plenty of storage underneath.’ While they were still living in their former home, Jen and Hari were able to submit their planning application, and once it was granted, they oversaw the four-month project through daily site visits. ‘Things crop up all the time that need answering straight away,’ says Jen. ‘So we would pop in before work to see if the builders had any questions and give them a list to check against. One of the main advantages though was that the builder’s son is a quantity surveyor. We knew each other professionally, so we knew he could read

the plans and they would do a good job.’ Along the hallway, overlooking the communal garden at the back of the property, the kitchen was turned into an open sociable space by knocking down the adjoining wall to the dining room. ‘The kitchen in our previous place was small so I’d be cooking while everyone else was in the living room,’ says Jen. ‘I wanted to make this one as big and airy as possible, so it would be the heart of the home. Everything happens here now. Dylan can do his homework, or when we entertain, friends can sit and chat while we cook.’ Although two heads are often better than one – particularly when one is an architect and the other a designer – when the project is a home renovation, it can easily become a battleground. However Jen and Hari managed to successfully unite their different ideas. Before switching careers to set up her homeware brand, Hokolo, Jen was the project architect for The Adria, a luxury boutique hotel in South Kensington. ‘It was the first project where I’d worked closely with a team of interior designers,’ she says. ‘The decor was very sumptuous and I loved the richness of colour, pattern and texture.’ Wanting to inject some character into her own home, Jen opted for a stylish grey palette in the main bedroom, hallway and kitchen. In the kitchen she created a striking patchwork splashback with blue Moorish-style tiles. ‘It’s the opposite of a typical 82 housebeautiful.com/uk
architect’s home with bare white surfaces everywhere,’ she laughs. ‘My husband took a lot of convincing. Even the builders were tutting as they painted the walls grey, but when it was finished everyone loved it. We’re on the top floor so the flat is filled with light and can take darker shades.’ For the flooring, Jen and Hari went for a pale grey Marmoleum not traditionally used in residential developments. ‘We wanted a seamless feel without any joins between the rooms,’ says Jen. ‘It’s used a lot in commercial developments as it looks like resin but is less expensive. The cost is in the installation as it needs a specialist, but it’s easy to clean and things don’t break if they get dropped.’ The flat is peppered throughout with vintage mid-century furniture, which Jen, a keen Ebayer, has bought at affordable prices. A close attention to detail is apparent in the carefully sourced Berker rotary light switches. ‘We both studied the great masters of Modernism and love that design ethos,’ explains Jen. ‘The clean lines, honest materials and workmanship really appeal.’ Jen has also introduced Chinese antiques to reflect her Hong Kong heritage and some quirky touches, with the unusual ceramic artwork that decorates the hallway. ‘I’ve injected warmth with bold colours,’ she says. I also like the mix of old and new, and East and West – it means our home reflects all the things we love.’ HB

ome houses have a real sense of sanctuary – a quiet calm that makes you feel instantly at peace. Cara Bale’s is one of those. Calm thanks to its simplicity of colour palette, where uncluttered curated interiors meet carefully edited vignettes in every corner. ‘We moved here from a small two-up two-down cottage in a very pretty, more sought-after Broads village,’ says Cara, a lifestyle photographer and Instagram influencer, who shares her home with her partner Ben Mullard and their daughters Maisy and Mathilda. ‘Catfield is a working village, known for its boatbuilding firms and agriculture. Sacrificing location is something I’d never normally do, but the barn’s easy single-storey layout and large room proportions gave us the growing space we needed. We moved in when Mathilda was six months old and not having stairs – especially when she began toddling – was a joy.’ Cara’s three-bedroom, three-bathroom barn is one of a series of previously converted mid-19th-century red-brick-and-flint farm buildings. Full of original features, such as the sitting room’s high-beamed ceilings with hooks that once held hay bags or animal feed, it also has old planked doors and a small loft hatch accessed by a wooden ladder in the kitchen. ‘When we moved in, the house was quite dated. Most of the rooms had magnolia walls and brown threadbare carpets, and there was old lino on the kitchen floor,’ says Cara. ‘We tackled a room at a time. As each one is fairly large with wide doorways, we were able to move beds and furniture from room to room as we went. For me, the biggest thing to get right was the flooring. I love painted floorboards. We sourced planks from a builders’ merchant and hired a brilliant local tradesman from mybuilder.com to fit them. They’re inexpensive and practical – and the unavoidable scuff marks they get over time simply add more character.’ Incorporating a mix of Parisian and Scandinavian influences, Cara and Ben designed an L-shaped kitchen, replacing the previous dark, wooden units with Shaker-style cabinets and white composite worktops. ‘As the kitchen has really high ceilings, I kept the walls free of eye-level cupboards so the dining space would be the main focus.’ The kitchen is the heart of Cara’s home, where the farmhouse table often takes centre stage at family gatherings. ‘We hosted a barbecue here for Ben’s 50th birthday, as well as birthday parties for the girls,’ says Cara. Her most recent project was to transform the family bathroom. She cleverly disguised pipework with floor planks in blush pink sourced from a local builders’ merchant and added traditional elements, such as an enamel bucket sink and rolltop bath, which work beautifully with floral prints and vintage accessories. ‘Hats off to the fantastic female decorating team I met at the girls’ ballet lessons: Michelle Stephens Decorating is a team of mums

who work around school hours – they did an amazing job, hanging off the scaffolding tower to paint the beams during school time!’ says Cara. ‘A great tip I learned from a friend, is to paint walls and woodwork in the same colour to create a calm feel – and it means there’s no cutting in, which makes life much easier!’ Outside, Cara enjoys growing flowers and vegetables in raised beds, and the exterior also enabled Ben to fulfil a long-term goal. ‘I’m a big fan of renewable energy, so one of the barn’s selling points for me was the huge expanse of roof that faces directly south – perfect for solar panels, which have made a huge difference to our bills,’ he says. ‘As the walls are super-thick, the barn stays cosy all year long.’ This area of the Norfolk Broads has lots to offer - including blissful summer days drenched in sunshine. ‘I love paddleboarding and the girls are into canoeing,’ says Cara. ‘We also like to go camping at Hickling Campsite (hicklingcampsite.co.uk), where our friends, the owners Jo and Tom, have crafted beautifully made shepherd huts, and there’s a coffee hut stocked with delicious pastries and locally sourced meats to cook on fire pits.’ For the barn’s furnishings, Cara spent time treasure-hunting in Norfolk’s reclamation yards, charity shops and independent sellers for vintage and thrifty buys. ‘I love antique pine. Most items I buy for my home have a practical use. The copper tap, dish rack and ladder stand out – I don’t feel the kitchen needs much more than that.’ Cara and Ben have spent four years restoring the barn to suit 21st-century modern country living while respecting the building’s past life. As Cara reflects: ‘The barn is a practical, easy, accessible space and it works perfectly for our family lifestyle.’ HB

It’s tactile, inviting and looks just as chic in dark, moody settings as it does in a bright, fresh space,’ says Andrew. ‘Some people are still wary of using it, though, put off by the perception that velvet is lovely to look at but lacking in practicality. PROPERTY TREND GOING UNDERGROUND When there’s no space to extend outwards, digging downwards might be a great option
Moving a staircase turned an existing dark basement with no link to the garden into a light-filled open-plan room that connects with outside. Design by Neil Dusheiko Architects
I
f you’re looking to add more day-to-day living space rather than a bedroom, then extending underneath the house or garden can add chill-out zones, an extra living room, a kitchen/ diner or even a home cinema. Basements may not be the easiest renovation to undertake, but they offer a whole range of benefits. Here are six key points to bear in mind if you decide to extend your home underground…
1 I S T H E E X T R A S PA C E WORTH THE COST? Cost, construction time and finished result all depend on how much excavation work is needed. If a house already has a basement, then it may just be a case of lowering the floor to allow for sufficient head height. Where houses don’t have an existing basement, space can be dug out below the building, but it’s a huge job so the amount of
work and disruption shouldn’t be under-estimated. ‘Creating a new basement beneath an existing property is highly specialist work, often requiring temporary support for the structure above as well as good access to dig and remove the soil safely,’ explains Emily Bonner, structural engineer from London-based organisation, the Basement Information Centre. ‘The size of basement and property are critical factors, as are the ground conditions under the property. It’s clearly much more challenging to remove rock than earth, for example.’
2 DO YOU NEED A RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT? Looking to the future, it’s also worth deciding if you’re going to get a return on your investment when you sell the property. Architect Neil Dusheiko, whose renovated basement is pictured above, says: ‘The cost of excavating a basement is huge and it can be very House Beautiful MARCH 2021 95
PROPERTY TREND
A strip of glass flooring allows light to flood from a secluded terrace (see below) into the basement, which houses a cinema and playroom. Design by Neil Dusheiko Architects
expensive to get insurance for the work,’ he says. ‘Your project would need to be minimum of 40 square metres to get any kind of decent return on your investment. So work out whether you’re going to be in that house long enough to recoup the money spent, and how valuable the space is to your lifestyle.’
3 H O W W I L L Y O U U S E T H E S PA C E ? ‘The perimeter walls will be doing most of the work so you can create a lovely open-plan space, similar to a loft,’ says Neil Dusheiko. ‘You get very little noise in a basement, which means they’re calm and peaceful spaces, and if there are no restrictions in terms of height, they can have quite high ceilings.’ Deciding early on how you’re going to use that space, and whether you’re going to separate it into rooms or leave it open plan, is essential, says Emily from the Basement Information Centre. ‘Those plans affect the Building Regulations that apply, as well as the waterproofing system and crucially, and often overlooked, the type of ventilation required. It’s better to install a system with the highest performance you’re likely to need, rather than upgrade later; for instance, if you change it from a store room to a bedroom.’ Making sure basements are watertight is a key consideration, and as Emily says, good ventilation is particularly important if you’re including a high-humidity area, such as a shower or bathroom.
4 W H AT P E R M I S S I O N S A R E N E E D E D ? Building Regulations approval will always be needed and planning permission may also be required. You’re very likely to need to issue a Party Wall Notice to your neighbours, and it’s key that the requirements for fire safety and other important issues are considered as part of the early designs. Get all the permissions early, as that way, says Emily, ‘you’ll know if there are any limitations set by your local authority that will impact on design.’
5 A N D W H AT I F Y O U D I D W A N T T O HAVE YOUR OWN HOME CINEMA? Then you wouldn’t be alone! Home cinemas are one of the biggest interiors trends right now. But it’s important to bear in mind that installing electrics in a basement isn’t a straightforward job and has to involve a qualified electrician – which your builder should organise.
6 A N A LT E R N A T I V E O P T I O N If digging beneath your home isn’t feasible, consider the garden. ‘Excavating under a garden is a possibility,’ says Emily. ‘It can be an excellent way of providing more space for your home while still having a usable garden or terrace above. It’s likely to be far less expensive to build a basement under a garden than below an existing property but you’ll need to establish whether you need planning permission. And one of the first things to think about is how you’re going to access it easily, or safely escape from it in the event of fire, as your options might be limited by the existing arrangement of the property.’ HB

Financial analyst Cyril Fournier and his wife Laure, a strategy consultant, live in a five-bedroom period home in west London with their children, Elise, Lucie and Francois Tell us about the original kitchen There were a number of aspects that just didn’t work for us. We’d always had a problem with the lack of natural light – it’s south facing, but even on a bright day in the middle of summer, you would find yourself having to turn on the lights. As a result, we spent as little time as possible in there – it was just a place where we cooked. Most importantly, our children were growing and with them, our need for more space. We wanted somewhere that could be a social hub, a place where we could enjoy doing things together – talking, eating and helping with homework. But also a space for entertaining and socialising when family and friends came round.
OPEN VISTA Tall glass doors at the back provide a wonderful view of the garden
When did you start the process? Laure and I had been living here happily for 12 years, but we’d often wondered how a glass extension could work. Two years ago, the time seemed right to take action and we began looking everywhere for inspiration. As well as checking out Pinterest for ideas, we took note of what our neighbours had done with their homes. I also downloaded all the planning permission documents for houses on our street to see how others approached it and found that while all the properties are the same, no two kitchens are alike. What were the next steps? As well as the kitchen, we wanted to make structural changes to the basement, living room and roof, which made it a sizeable project. Instead of employing a separate architect and builder, Laure and I decided to use a local company that provided a complete service, including everything from drawing and planning to the actual construction. This helped to keep costs down and also to streamline the process. The first stage was to sit down with the architect to discuss what was possible, and through a combination of our ideas and theirs, we came up with a plan for extending the kitchen, which included a glazed side return and near-full-length glass doors at the rear. House Beautiful MARCH 2021 99
LIGHTING Low hanging pendants lend an industrial edge and create an ambient glow, perfect for entertaining
GLASS ROOF With natural light flooding in, the kitchen has been transformed from the previously dark space
ISLAND At the centre of the room, this is large enough for the whole family to sit together at meal times
Did you make any unplanned changes along the way? We’d originally intended to live with the existing Victorian floorboards, which weren’t in great condition. However, it soon became clear that leaving the floor as it was wouldn’t do our brand-new kitchen justice. Instead, we chose an oak floor supplied and fitted by Broadleaf Timber – as soon as it was laid, we both knew we’d made the right choice. Were there any unforeseen problems? Halfway through the process, we discovered we needed fire-rated glass for the roof, but tracking down a company that could provide this proved extremely difficult. Eventually I found Slimline, who sourced and fitted glazing that met with the regulations. Was the project finished on time? The kitchen on its own took around three months. It was slightly longer than we’d hoped, but in retrospect delays were inevitable: we could only measure up for the glazing once the openings were completed and the glass then took a month to be made and delivered, so during that time, nothing else could happen. How did you decide on cabinetry? We felt it was vital to use a kitchen company that understood our requirements, so we called in Elan Kitchens, which installs 100 housebeautiful.com/uk
bespoke Leicht cabinetry – and this turned out to be the most enjoyable part of the project. After a consultation at their studio, they created a design for us that looked stylish and worked perfectly, giving us lots of storage and ample worktop space. There’s even an ingeniously placed cosy seating nook. Most importantly, at the heart of the kitchen, there is now an island that allows all five of us to sit round and talk face to face, rather than us being in a long line. Ergonomically it functions perfectly. Who did the interior styling? Where I took the lead on the building work, Laure was in charge of creating a look for the room. Together with the designer Gwendoline Porte, she came up with a scheme that’s vibrant as well as practical. Using the floor tiles in the cooking area as inspiration, they created a colour scheme with a sense of unity that really comes to life with the additional natural light. Are you happy with the result? Yes, very much so. The new kitchen has definitely met all of our objectives – amazing cabinetry, increased light and a sociable space for the family to be together. Considering it was once a dull place used only for cooking, we’re now glad to be seeing our kitchen in a whole new light!

MULTI-PURPOSE KITCHENS
1 2 3
Cyril and Laure transformed their dark, gloomy kitchen into a multifunctional hub where the family are able to relax and socialise with friends. A glass extension fills the space with light, but it’s the smaller details such as the generous island and cosseting reading nook that creates a laid-back environment where everyone loves to spend time throughout the day. • This kitchen from Blakes (A) shows you don’t have to use an island for extra seating. Here, it divides the space and offers a spot for a chair or sofa – the perfect place for friends and family to relax while you’re chopping (or vice versa!). Kitchens start at £45,000. • While we may think a sociable kitchen would include an island, this layout from Plain English (B) proves otherwise. Cabinets along two walls provide ample work surface, with hung storage above to keep things tidy. A circular table feels casual, so is ideal for busy family mornings, while a low-hanging light brings a feeling of intimacy for evenings. Kitchens start at £50,000. • A built-in seating nook is a brilliant addition to a family kitchen; a space for children to tuck away and read or do homework while parents prepare meals. ‘WE WANTED OUR BATHROOM TO LOOK BIGGER’ A mirrored wall and a painted ceiling are just two of the decorating tricks that have been used to create an illusion of space in this compact room

Leanne Baud, an emergency medical technician and husband Ash, a plumber and gas engineer, updated the bathroom of their 1930s home in west Yorkshire as part of a whole-house renovation Describe what your old bathroom was like? There were dull grey tiles that went all the way to the ceiling and the basic suite was a budget one. The most annoying thing was the bath, which had a big rounded end that stuck out into the room. What was your biggest challenge? The bathroom is just 2.4m x 1.8m, so the main aim was to make it feel larger. My idea was to put a huge mirror on one wall to create a feeling of space – however when we were installing it, we had a really nerve-wracking time trying to swing the bespoke glass around

at the top of the staircase! We had to cut out a bannister and newel post, which sounds drastic, but we knew we’d be replacing the stairs. I was convinced there was enough room, but had to prove that to the installers by trialling it with a piece of MDF cut to size. Now in place, it’s the perfect fit, running pretty much the length of the bath and up to the ceiling. How did you want your new bathroom to look? I’d seen the star floor tiles on Instagram a year before and loved their aged look, which I knew would work well with the charcoal grey paintwork and Crittall shower screen. Brushed brass fittings look good against dark walls and I chose a mottled finish for the mirror to go with the overall vintage, industrial feel. You decided to paint the walls and ceiling one colour… Yes, I’d already fallen in love with Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe and got braver with each room I decorated. I kept seeing Instagram pictures with streamlined ceilings and walls and was surprised at how it made small rooms look larger – so I decided to go for it. Was keeping the layout important to you? We considered putting the bath beneath the window, but that didn’t leave enough space for a separate shower – and the window House Beautiful MARCH 2021 105

prevented us going for a shower over the bath in that position, as it wouldn’t have allowed for privacy. A big walk-in shower on its own was another option we looked at, but in the end we felt this might devalue the house as a family home in the future. Where did you spend and where did you save? I had to convince Ash about the mirror because it wasn’t a cheap option, but then he wanted the Crosswater taps – as a plumber, he has seen that cheap brands don’t last. Although he gets a trade discount, I still managed to source branded sanitaryware for less than he could, through Ebay. We used up existing paint and a box of Metro wall tiles that were left over from other rooms we’d renovated. By the time we started, we only had to pay for the plasterer and the electrician. You and Ash did most of the work yourselves – how did it go? We’ve always said this is like the house that Jack built. When we started to chip off the old tiles, we discovered the previous owners 106 housebeautiful.com/uk
had tiled on top of tiles and the plasterboard began to break away. Then we found the ceiling had been overboarded many times and we’d lost a few inches of head height. In the end, we took everything back to the brickwork and rafters, which created lots of awful black lime dust and rubbish that filled two skips! What’s your top tip for anyone renovating a bathroom? If you’re going for wall-mounted fittings, make sure you invest in a good quality brand that will last. Cheap fittings are more likely to need repairs, which means the plumber will have to break out the tiles to access the pipes. Don’t compromise, but wait and save up to buy exactly what you want. A new bathroom is a long-term investment that should last for years. Are you happy with the result? Yes, very – I wouldn’t change a thing! The bathroom is both practical and pretty, and gives the impression of being a lot bigger than it is, which is exactly what we wanted to achieve.

BATHROOM BASICS
Replacing the existing p-shaped bath was essential to increasing floor space and Leanne installed a huge mirror on one wall to maximise light. Spotted on Instagram, statement floor tiles inspired the choice of Crittal shower screen and charcoal paint used on walls, ceiling and the uPVC window frame. Open shelves were chosen to maintain an airy feel.

IN DE TAIL Looking to create a stylish bathroom in a modest space? Here are some of Leanne’s clever ideas
SMALL BATHROOMS
1
Leanne employs a host of smart decorating tricks to make the most of a small space, without detracting from her own personal style. An antiqued mirror above the bath is in keeping with the rustic tiles underfoot, while creating the illusion of more space. Floating shelves and a bold colour continued up onto the ceiling help give the impression of height. Don’t be afraid to experiment in smaller rooms – they offer the perfect opportunity to get creative! • Mirrors, as Leanne shows, are a great way to make a room feel bigger. In this bathroom from Drummonds (A), the mirror over the basin blends seamlessly into the tiling, creating an open, airy feel. Mull Classic three-hole basin mixer in brass, from £1,170. • As Leanne’s bathroom proves, limited space doesn’t always mean having to sacrifice a bath. Available from Albion Bath Company (B), the Tubby Tub, from £1,756, is stylish and practical, and at just 1200mm, ideal for compact spots. • Every inch of square footage is put to use in this bathroom from CP Hart (C), where a corner with sloping ceiling has been given a vibrant dose of colour. Samuel Heath Landmark Pure mixer in Urban Brass, £1,408; Duravit Vero handbasin, £194; both CP Hart. Lampas Marine tiles, £72/sq m, Topps Tiles.

‘Through the power of nutrition, we have the ability to fight infections, balance overactive immune systems and reduce our risk of allergies,’ says nutritionist and author Kate LlewellynWaters. ‘My aim is to help you make informed choices as to how to eat and live, so that you can achieve optimal gut health and a healthy, balanced immunity.’ Follow these tempting everyday recipes from The Immunity Cookbook to enjoy delicious meals that will help to leave you feeling happier and healthier. Chicken curry Dark chicken meat is higher in vitamins A and D than the white meat. These vitamins play an important role in supporting gut health and immune function, which is why I tend to make this recipe with chicken thighs. SERVES 4 2tbsp olive oil 500g skinless and boneless chicken thighs, chopped into large chunks 1 white onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1tbsp medium curry powder 1tsp ground turmeric 1tsp ground cardamom 1tbsp tomato purée 200ml coconut yogurt or organic Greek yogurt 200ml chicken stock Handful of raisins 126 housebeautiful.com/uk
Choice of rice, to serve Freshly ground black pepper 1 Heat the oil in a saucepan over a medium heat. Add the chopped chicken and cook until lightly browned all over, then remove to a plate and set aside. 2 Add the chopped onion, garlic and curry powder to the same pan and sweat for 5min until the onion starts to soften. Stir in the turmeric and cardamom and cook for a further 4-5min, then add the chicken back to the pan along with the tomato purée. 3 Add the yogurt and stock to the pan, stirring well, then reduce the heat and simmer for 30min, stirring occasionally and adding more water if it starts to look dry. Add the raisins and continue to simmer for a further 15min. 4 Meanwhile, prepare your choice of rice according to the packet instructions. Season the curry to taste with freshly ground black pepper and serve with the rice.
Zingy teriyaki salmon salad Salmon is a fatty fish loaded with healthy Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, which play an extremely important role in supporting our immune systems. However, not all salmon is created equal – farmed salmon contains up to three times more saturated fat than wild salmon. Additionally, wild salmon is higher in vitamin D and minerals such as iron, zinc and potassium, so do opt for wild salmon over farmed salmon, if possible. SERVES 2 1tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3tsp soy sauce Zest and juice of 1 lime
2cm piece of fresh root ginger, grated Small handful of fresh coriander, finely chopped 2 wild salmon fillets 1 red pepper, halved and deseeded 10 mixed cherry tomatoes Salad leaves of your choice, to serve 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/ 180°C fan/gas mark 6 and line a baking sheet with baking paper or foil. 2 In a large bowl, mix together the olive oil, soy sauce, lime zest and juice, grated ginger and finely chopped coriander. Place the salmon fillets in the marinade and set the bowl aside for 15min. 3 Place the marinated salmon fillets, pepper halves and cherry tomatoes on the lined baking sheet and cook in the oven for 15min. 4 Once cooked, remove from the oven and serve on a bed of salad leaves.
COOK’S NOTE
For a vegan option, replace the salmon with firm tofu cut into chunks. And if you don’t have fresh coriander to hand, use 1tsp ground coriander instead.
Artichoke and mushroom spelt
SERVES 4
20 cherry tomatoes, halved Large handful of olives of your choice 3tbsp olive oil Freshly ground black pepper 150g mushrooms, sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed Mixed green salad, to serve
200g dried spelt 300g artichokes preserved in oil, drained and halved 3 carrots, grated
1 Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil and cook the dried spelt according to the packet instructions.
Spelt, a grain, is a good source of fibre and contains vitamins and minerals. It’s related to wheat, but is higher in protein and zinc.
128 housebeautiful.com/uk
2 Drain the spelt and transfer to a mixing bowl, then add the halved artichokes, grated carrots, halved cherry tomatoes, olives and 2tbsp of the olive oil. Stir to coat the vegetables with the oil and season with black pepper. 3 In a separate pan, gently heat the remaining 1tbsp olive oil over a low heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and crushed garlic and fry until the mushrooms are softened, then stir into the spelt mixture. Serve with a mixed green salad.
F O O D I N S P I R AT I O N
COOK’S NOTE
For a vegan option, replace the lamb with the same weight of dried or canned lentils, use vegetable stock instead of chicken stock and serve with coconut or soy yogurt.
Fruity lamb tagine This is a nutritious tagine that’s ultra-easy to make. It’s loaded with spices that taste fantastic and also benefit health. Cumin is naturally rich in iron and research suggests that it may play a role in weight loss too. SERVES 4 400g stewing lamb, diced 3tbsp olive oil 2 red onions, diced 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and diced 1 red pepper, deseeded and diced 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1tsp ground cumin 1tsp ground ginger 1tsp ground cinnamon
100g dried apricots, quartered 500ml chicken stock, or more as needed 1 x 400g can chopped tomatoes 1 small butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into 1cm cubes Freshly ground black pepper TO SERVE Handful of pine nuts, toasted 100ml organic Greek yogurt 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/ 160 fan°C/gas mark 4. Combine all the ingredients (except black pepper, pine nuts and yogurt) in a large casserole dish and cover with the lid. 2 Cook in the oven for 1½hr, removing the lid and stirring after 1hr. Check occasionally and add more stock during cooking, if required. 3 Remove from the oven and season to taste with freshly ground pepper. Serve sprinkled with the toasted pine nuts, and a dollop of Greek yogurt.
COOK’S NOTE
For the coleslaw, combine the cabbage, carrots and spring onions in a large bowl and stir in the avocado oil, mustard, mayonnaise and yogurt. Scatter over the sunflower seeds and season with salt and black pepper.

Turkey burgers Rich in protein, turkey is also an excellent source of numerous vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins and selenium, zinc and phosphorus, which are essential to health. SERVES 4 FOR THE BURGERS 1 white onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2tsp dried mixed herbs Large handful of fresh coriander Zest of 1 lime ½tsp sea salt Freshly ground black pepper 4tbsp olive oil 400g minced turkey FOR THE CRUNCHY COLESLAW (See cook’s note for method) ½ white cabbage, finely sliced ½ red cabbage, finely sliced 2 carrots, grated 4 spring onions, trimmed and chopped 2tsp avocado oil 1tsp wholegrain mustard 2tbsp avocado mayonnaise 2tbsp natural yogurt 2tbsp sunflower seeds, toasted Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper FOR THE SWEET POTATO WEDGES 4 medium-sized sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into wedges 4tbsp olive oil 1tsp paprika 1tsp cayenne pepper 1tsp sea salt 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/ 180°C fan/gas mark 6. Place the onion, garlic, mixed herbs, coriander, lime zest, salt, some pepper and 1tbsp of the oil into a blender or food processor and blitz to combine. 2 Transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl, add the turkey and mix well (you may find this easiest using your hands). Shape the mixture into 6-8 patties and place in the fridge for 25min to firm up. 3 Meanwhile, spread the sweet
potato wedges over a baking sheet and sprinkle with the olive oil, paprika, cayenne pepper and sea salt. Place in the oven for an initial 20min. 4 After 20min, remove from the oven and gently shake the tray to turn the wedges, then return to the oven and cook for a further 10-20min until golden and crispy. 5 Heat the remaining 3tbsp oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the burgers and cook for 6-8min on each side, turning once, until they are browned and cooked through in the middle. 6 Serve with the coleslaw and sweet potato wedges.
Fruit ’n’ nut quinoa crumble I use quinoa in this crumble as it’s a great protein source – as are nuts, which
are also rich in vitamin E, magnesium and selenium. I particularly like to use Brazil nuts, as they’re incredibly nutritious and are the richest food source of selenium available. This important mineral plays a vital role in supporting your immune system and promotes immunity by lowering oxidative stress in your body. Nuts also contain anti-inflammatory properties and are high in fibre, which helps you to feel satiated, reduces calorie absorption and promotes gut health. SERVES 4 140g cooked quinoa 50g Brazil nuts, roughly chopped 50g pecans, roughly chopped
50g walnuts, roughly chopped 30g desiccated coconut 4tbsp maple syrup 3tbsp coconut oil, melted 150g frozen raspberries 150g frozen blueberries 100g frozen blackberries Coconut yogurt, to serve 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/ 160°C fan/gas mark 4. Put the cooked quinoa, roughly chopped nuts and desiccated coconut into a food processor and lightly pulse 2-3 times to combine. 2 Mix the maple syrup and melted coconut oil in a bowl, then stir in the nutty quinoa mixture. 3 Scatter all the frozen berries over a baking dish, cover with the crumble mix and bake in the oven for 25min. Serve with coconut yogurt. HB House Beautiful MARCH 2021 131

RHUBARB
3 W A Y S T O U S E U P. . .
KIMCHI This fermented pickle is most commonly associated with cabbage, although it can be made with pretty much any vegetable. As the base of a salad dressing Blend a couple of spoons of kimchi with a slug of sesame oil, 1tbsp miso, a handful of coriander and a splash of water to loosen. Use to dress a chicken, chopped vegetable and peanut salad. To flavour a stew Add a spoon of chopped kimchi to any tomato-based stew to give it an extra kick. As a sauce for noodles Roughly chop and fry in butter until caramelised. Pour in some of the kimchi liquor or some of the noodle water to emulsify and use to coat cooked noodles for a super-quick, delicious supper.
Rhubarb is one of those heroes that, in the depths of a sparse season for home-grown produce, brings a welcome excitement to British allotments and grocers. The forced variety is ready from January and the vibrant pink and green field-grown stalks from late March. The ‘rhubarb triangle’, a nine-squaremile area in Yorkshire, is famous for its early forced rhubarb. It’s grown in sheds, which inhibits chlorophyll production, resulting in beautiful bright pink ombre stalks. My mother, along with many other gardeners, achieves this effect by growing rhubarb underneath upturned plastic plant pots. Rhubarb has a polarising tartness, but its flavours are more complex than it’s given credit for. Once cooked in quantities of sugar, it is gloriously fragrant, with notes of sweet strawberries and tart apple. Its extreme acidity lends itself to pairings with rich or fatty ingredients, both sweet and savoury. Rhubarb and custard is a classic example, whether that be gently poached stems in a blanket of vanilla custard, a buttery crumble topped with a rich, egg-heavy ice cream, or a crème brûlée with rhubarb compote hiding in the base. While gooseberries are the classic pairing for oily fish such as mackerel, the similar
tartness of rhubarb makes it an equally successful partner. It works well, either gently stewed or pickled in a sweet liquor. Fatty meats like pork belly will also benefit from a sharp injection of a rhubarb pickle. Cooking rhubarb can be frustrating. It turns from crunchy to mush in seconds and I certainly enjoy it a lot more with a bit of bite. Catching that very small window of perfection requires slow, careful cooking: gently simmer in water sweetened with sugar or honey to your taste for 5min until it just starts to soften. Remove from the heat and allow it to cool. The rhubarb will continue to cook slowly and will absorb the sweetness and any aromatic flavours from the poaching liquid. If you think it’s getting too soft too quickly, transfer to a bowl or tub and place in the fridge to slow it down. I like to add other ingredients to the poaching liquid. Flavours such as bay, rose, ginger and rosemary work particularly well. Once you’ve got your perfect result, you can use it to top porridge or yogurt for breakfast, fold into sweetened whipped cream to make a fool, or use as the fruit and jelly element in a trifle. BLOOMING LOVELY Blossom trees, magnolias and hellebores all offer brilliant ways to light up your garden at the start of the new season
House Beautiful MARCH 2021 135
G A R D E N I N S P I R AT I O N
BEAUTIFUL BLOSSOM Bursting into life at this time of year, blossom trees such as crab apple and flowering cherries, with their clouds of pink and white petals, are among the most inspiring sights of the changing season. Look for those small enough to grow in modest-sized gardens, or even in pots.
The versatile crab apple At the start the year, crab apple tree boughs are heavy with frothy, candy-coloured blooms, and then when the fruit comes, many varieties provide a fabulous display of colour that will continue from autumn into winter. Thanks to its beautiful, delicate pink buds that open to fragrant white flowers, Malus ‘Evereste’ is a go-to tree for lots of garden designers. It can grow to 26ft so needs a fair-sized garden and should thrive in moderately fertile soil, tolerating partial shade. For small- to medium-sized spaces or for containers, ‘Adirondak’, which has waxy white flowers, is a good choice.
Ornamental selection Flowering cherries are very easy to grow and produce wonderful blossom. For smaller spaces, two vase-shaped trees, Prunus ‘Snowgoose’ and ‘Sunset Boulevard’, are ideal. On the first, which will grow well in a moist, chalky soil, the large flowers are almost grey-white. On the second, which is well-suited to moderately fertile soil in full sun, the dark buds open to reveal white flowers edged with pink. A third smaller tree is Prunus ‘The Bride’ (pictured right), which enjoys similar growing conditions and will produce a froth of large single white flowers with a vibrant deep red centre. 136 housebeautiful.com/uk

Once you awaken to the charms of hellebores, they’re hard to resist
138 housebeautiful.com/uk
HEAVENLY HELLEBORES Seemingly unperturbed by anything the weather may throw at them, hellebores unfurl from their deeply divided evergreen leaves in shades that range from purest white, through yellows, pinks and reds, to dramatic dark purple and black.
Take your pick These perennial plants are also varied in other ways, coming in single colours, bi-colours, spotted and freckled as well as single, double and semi-double blooms. Your choice really comes down to the kind of soil and garden you have, and how you want the display to look.
Floral extravaganza The white and yellow flowers are the most visible when planted in shade; large, bi-coloured doubles create an extravagant show; while doubles derived from Helleborus torquatus are ideal for windy, exposed positions as they tend to be short. Green hellebores will help to blend and unite a mix of brighter colours.
PERFECT PARTNERS Opposite Pots of Helleborus ‘Eric Smith’ and Tiarella ‘Cygnet’, with its foamy spikes of soft pink flowers, look beautiful together in the garden, against the Japanese holly, Ilex crenata ‘Glory Gem’ in the background
TWICE AS NICE Above A terracotta pot containing a Helleborus x hybridus Hillier hybrid with double pink flowers BORDER FORCE Top right A mix of colourful hellebores brightens up the edge of a lawn in spring
HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH HELLEBORES IN THE GARDEN Hellebores prefer deep soil, moist but not waterlogged; they also do very well in clay. Improve light soils with garden compost and leaf mould. O They thrive in a cool, semi-shaded position provided by a house or garden wall, or when shaded by shrubs and small trees. O Remove all the old foliage around Christmas time – the leaves can look tatty beyond a certain point and any black spot may be passed on to new foliage – but you can leave a few healthy leaves to frame the flowers. O
IN POTS Hellebores develop an extensive root system, and require a large pot to allow for growth as well as space for any additional plants you might want to put with them – ivy, grasses or spring bulbs, for instance. O Plant the hellebores in a gritty soil-based compost and mulch with gravel. Move pots into prime position close to the house when they’re in flower. O Don’t neglect them once they’ve finished flowering. If you tuck them away, remember that they’ll need regular water and liquid feed through the summer if they’re to continue to thrive. O Consider positioning – stand your potted hellebores in dappled shade when they’re not on display. O

MAGNIFICENT MAGNOLIAS A magnolia shrub in full bloom is one of the glories of spring, whether it’s a mature tree festooned with large cup-shaped flowers or a compact shrub smothered in starry blossom. At a time when the rest of the garden is stirring into life with emerging spring flowers, bulbs and perennials, the magnolia is putting on a stunning display in colours that range from purest white through creams and yellows to every shade of pink, rich reds and purples. Magnolias are among our most ancient plants, with fossil records dating back a hundred million years. Because they predate the arrival of bees and other flying insects, they’re pollinated by beetles and are generally untroubled by pests – although it’s said they were once grazed by dinosaurs!
Deciduous options The majority of spring-flowering magnolias are deciduous. Most frequently planted are the spreading soulangeanas and the bushy stellata varieties. Soulangeana comes in many different flower colours and grows well in most urban environments and soil types, but it can outgrow smaller spaces. For compact gardens, the more petite and delicate Japanese Magnolia stellata is perfect, and can also be grown in containers. If you want something a bit different, then ‘Pinkie’ is medium-sized with rosy pink flowers, while ‘Margaret Helen’ is a large upright shrub with deep-rose-pink flowers.
There are also now a number of spring-flowering evergreens that provide more cheery colour throughout the year, and are particularly good for wall-training.The Fairy range is one example and these are perfect for growing in pots. In really cold winters, they may shed their leaves.
HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH MAGNOLIAS Take your time when choosing your magnolia – these trees can live for a hundred years, so you want to be sure the one you pick is the right size and colour. Buy from specialist growers for the best quality and widest choice. O Most magnolias will flower prolifically when placed in a sunny position, but be prepared for late frosts that can turn flowers brown overnight. O Magnolias are shallow-rooted and will grow well in small beds and close to houses where their roots won’t damage foundations, but avoid planting them where the ground is regularly cultivated, as their fleshy roots don’t like to be disturbed. O It’s good to plant in the autumn while the soil temperature is high, although magnolias can be planted throughout the spring. O
GARDEN STAR Left Perfect for small gardens and containers, Japanese Magnolia stellata produces showy white flowers in spring that resemble a star. It is also slightly fragrant 140 housebeautiful.com/uk

ur local high streets are the lifeblood of our communities and are key in forming the identity of the places we call home. Whether it’s popping into an independently run café for a morning cuppa or picking up a bouquet from the florist, a stroll around our town or village centre connects us to where we live. It does good, too – every time we spend money in local businesses, the majority of it will go back into the community and help support people, producers and makers in our neighbourhood. While the past year of lockdowns has been difficult for small businesses, independent retailers are determined to strive on and keep the spirit of their local areas alive.
ART OF CRAFT ‘The high street is the centre of a community,’ says Sophie Rees, the owner of The Bristol Artisan (thebristolartisan.com), a shop that specialises in contemporary design and craft. ‘Small independent retailers play a key role in the local area and offer character and uniqueness to every town.’ When we’re out and about visiting shops on the high street, it’s clear that we get a very different experience from going to a department store or shopping online. Sophie’s store stocks products from more than 60 independent makers from Bristol and beyond, and she believes it’s this that offers customers a valuable experience. ‘We often sell short runs of items that can’t be found elsewhere,’ says Sophie, ‘and have the time for added personal touches. Smaller shops can provide a more individual approach to customers.’ The Bristol Artisan’s stock means that ‘every purchase supports the creative industry,’ says Sophie, ‘and gives money back to the local economy. All in all, we’re helping to create a town we all want to live in.’ House Beautiful MARCH 2021 143
BACK TO BASICS Left When you buy local, you’re more likely to discover the real provenance of a piece
OLD AND NEW ‘Bricks and mortar stores are precious,’ says Jenny Wingfield who, along with her business partner Lauren Wallace, runs the interiors boutique Search & Rescue (searchandrescuelondon.co.uk) in London’s Stoke Newington. ‘They bring a combination of knowledge, curation and atmosphere that you get from being face-to-face with the small business owner,’ she explains. ‘We know a lot of the people behind the brands we stock, and many of our makers hand-deliver their orders to us. We tell customers their stories so they feel part of the experience and become invested in the success of these young brands.’ Jenny’s regular customers appreciate the eclectic mix of vintage furniture and cult favourites from a few international brands that sit alongside the pieces handmade by local artisans. ‘We stock over a hundred brands,’ she says, ‘but the curation process is instinctive. Our loyal customers continue to shop with us because they know there’s always something new and intriguing to spot, and that’s what the local high street can offer — the experience is all about discovery!’
INDIVIDUAL STYLE It’s the unique, personal pieces – often to be found in independent stores – that help make a house a home
A JOY TO SEE A host of pieces from independent UK-based designer makers is on offer at The Bristol Artisan (above and right). Owner Sophie Rees is proud of the friendly shopping experience the store offers and how supporting the local economy helps engender a sense of community spirit: ‘We’re helping to create a town we all want to live in.’

TAKE ROOT Many businesses on the high street also offer a platform for other activities. In Somerset, the interiors and lifestyle shop Caro (carosomerset.com) stocks pieces ranging from kitchenware and lighting to jewellery and skincare, and has become a destination for design lovers. The retailer has expanded its offering on Bruton High Street to include a separate studio space, which can be hired for workshops, exhibitions or even photo-shoots, as well as a bed-and-breakfast for overnight stays. Other independent retailers around the country have embarked on similar projects, from hosting supper clubs to teaching calligraphy, showing the value that these spaces bring to local communities beyond simple retail outlets. The more we engage with small businesses, the more we can all experience the joys they bring.

Shopping from independent retailers on your local high street is a rewarding experience, and each time you support a small business you’re taking part in the circular economy that sustains a network of individuals who are passionate about their craft. Compare the pleasure of owning a painting by a local artist, for example, or a cushion made with textiles from a nearby mill to that of their mass-produced alternatives. Even if it’s just a few pieces that hold a special place in your heart, there’s a value in understanding where the things we buy come from. And there’s real delight in knowing they’ve been designed, made and sold locally. HB

Why have a stairlift when you can have a real lift? A Stiltz Homelift will help you continue living in the home you love. ^d /Z>/&d͍ EK d, E<^͊ A Stiltz Homelift is an ideal and affordable alternative to a stairlift. You can now safely travel between the floors in your home while keeping your stairs the way they have always been. E d Θ /^ Z d A Stiltz Homelift can be installed into almost any room in your home. A Stiltz is uniquely compact with the smallest model taking up just over half a square metre – now that IS discreet. The homelift plugs directly into a standard domestic socket and uses less power than boiling a kettle. The homelifts run on selfsupporting rails so there is no need to drill into walls and the
motor is fully self-contained within the lift car. Neat. zKhZ &KZ s Z ,KD While some Stiltz customers have an immediate need for a homelift, others are looking to future-proof their existing home for when the stairs do eventually become a challenge: “We’ve had our lift for 2 years and were so impressed with how it was fitted from our hallway to our landing in what at first appeared to be an impossible space. And in such a short time.” Mr. Eames Don’t go through the unnecessary expense and emotional upheaval of moving house or the disruption of adapting your home for
downstairs living. Save money instead; live comfortably and independently in the home you love for as long as you want, with a Stiltz Homelift. W K& D/E Stiltz are proud to hold the highly-regarded Which? Trusted Trader status meaning they are a reputable, established and trustworthy company. Stiltz customers love them too, rating them ‘Great’ on Trustpilot. “Excellent product installed by polite and very competent tradesmen. Fits perfectly into my home. Made a huge difference to my ability to live independently”. Mark via Trustpilot They use their own teams of expert installers, so you
can choose a Stiltz Homelift with complete peace of mind, knowing you and your home are in a safe pair of hands. d ^d Z/s ,KD >/&d When you’re ready, a Stiltz Homelifts consultant will conduct a FREE, no obligation survey in your home. My style inspirations MATTHEW WILLIAMSON The fashion, interior and lifestyle designer on pattern, colour and his new collaboration with lighting brand Pooky

I began my career in design as a print designer, so colour and pattern organically find their way into everything I do. Designing patterns and choosing the elements, colours and repeats is such an exciting and stimulating process for me. I think it would have been next to impossible for me to become a minimalist in my approach to interior design. I understand and respect minimalist principles, but I could never part with colour, pattern and an eclectic mish-mash of furniture in favour of clean lines and clear surfaces.
ARTISTIC EYE Being studio-based, both in London and in Mallorca, I really relish my alone time to dive into a project – sketching, painting and moodboarding to bring an idea into the world in physical form. Depending on the project, my creative process can be collaborative or entirely individual. The decision to work with Pooky stems from a longstanding admiration of the brand’s artful steer on eclecticism and quality craftsmanship. Bringing the quintessential Matthew Williamson look to the classic Pooky shades allowed both parties to play to their strengths to create this diverse collection.

My career in fashion has been incredibly informative and useful for my move into interiors. The elemental principles of proportion, colour, materials and functionality are absolutely transferable. In many ways, dressing a room can be likened
to dressing a person. I love any excuse for maximum impact with pattern and colour, so it’s a similar approach! As well as working with Pooky, other favourite projects have been my wallpaper collection with Osborne & Little and my online shop – it’s such a pleasure to curate an edit of larger items alongside accessories such as lighting, candles and stationery.
CREATIVE COLLECTOR I feel very lucky to be able to divide my time between two aesthetically inspiring places: London and Deià in Mallorca. I think that your home should reflect who you are, so if you love maximalist patterns, antique finds, artful clutter and quirky lamps, let this come across in your home. Each room in both my London townhouse and the finca in Mallorca are truly elevated by my collection of candlesticks, which I’ve been acquiring for years. Friends often buy me one for Christmas and birthdays, so my collection is growing! I also collect antiques and enjoy the chase of finding gems among the bric-a-brac at fairs, markets, auctions and online.
MIX AND MATCH Bold colour choices, heavy patterning and a sense of rustic decadence define my style. The look is about being optimistic and playful, with my main rule being that there are no rules! It’s my belief that your home should inspire optimism, positivity and joy in every room. HB See Matthew’s collection of lamps at pooky.com
