wintry weather is the perfect excuse to hibernate and make our homes as cosy as possible for the coming months. In this issue, we've got lots of ideas to help you create home to hunker down in. Ifyou've been inspired by the dark and a

Before, this space was totally uninspiring, so we stripped the cupboard doors, spraypainted the extractor fan, spotlights, door handles, door hinges and kitchen window frame black. My story...

our second home as a couple we only moved from across the road! We loved the area so much, and
This
is
we knew we wanted to stay, so when this bigger house came up, we knew we had to have it. This home provides much more living space than our previous one and offered us the chance to decorate to our taste and unleash our creativity. Knowing that this was our forever home, we felt brave to go against the grain and be a little bit bold and quirky. The living room is an extension on the side of the
house that the previous owner built, and is an impressive space with huge ceilings, but it’s long and quite thin. The space didn't really flow that well, so we
Hag
had a log-burner built with an alcove for logs to create a focal point. We also went dark with the walls here as the is so bright and light it could definitely take it. now thinking of going dark all over, but I've not quite decided. want each room to feel totally different as don't just have one style! like mixture of

We have a very colourful home now, and Josh is amazing in trusting me. When said wanted to paint the whole room green, or the kitchen cabinets olive with pink tiles, had many raised eyebrows, but he trusted me and absolutely loves it. It definitely makes it easier having a partner who doesn't challenge you and lets you have free rein. Eventually, would love to extend the back of the house to have that open-plan kitchen/diner/lounge that everyone lusts after. But for now, we are so happy with our cheap DIY update. |

‘I’m inspired by Palm
Springs and Moroccan design, and as our hallway is quite long and dark, knew it could take a bold look. The terracotta on the walls makes me happy as soon as walk downstairs for my morning coffee or get in from a rubbish day. The gold leaf up the stairs was a project won't be repeating again any time soon as it took me a while to do. However, love the finished result - the way the terracotta reflects the gold makes me feel like I’m on a beach at sunset’ |

What I learned... ® Don't rush into something because you see a trend on Instagram. Don’t get me wrong, some trends are fab, and will be right up your street, but I've done this and learnt from it the hard way. ended up changing things after only two months because it wasn’t ‘me’ which was such a faff and waste of money. If| had been less impulsive, maybe wouldn't have done it in the first place. Fitting into a trend just because everyone is, doesn’t mean it works for you. |

So we decided to recreate the look instead with an in-frame design from DIY Kitchens, which was colour matched to Farrow & Ball Railings and teamed with brass handles we sourced online. My old school friend Dan, who owns DW Kitchens, helped with the measurements and fitted everything. Although wed originally wanted wood parquet flooring, it made more sense to go for luxury vinyl tiles because the seven-inch thick concrete floor would've needed five months drying out before we could lay it. love the open-plan layout and I'm so happy "we've achieved our dream kitchen on a much smaller budget! |

My story...

A
We'd only been in our three-bedroom Victorian house in Nottingham for two years when we moved to this
bigger four-bedroom property on the next street. The three-storey house had been rented out for 20 years, so the décor was dated, but there was a big driveway with scope to extend. Our first job was tanking the cellar to provide storage. Then we decorated the kids‘ bedrooms and shower room on the top floor to create a haven away from all the dust. Four months after moving in, we tackled the ground floor. The kitchen and dining room were knocked together and squared off with a single-storey rear extension, then we demolished the garage and added a two-storey side extension. This gave us a new garage with a utility room behind, plus a dressing room and en suite above. We also added a downstairs toilet where the old kitchen door was blocked up. To save money the builders constructed the shell, then we project managed the second fix trades ourselves. Originally, we considered a two-storey rear extension to give us a fifth bedroom, but the neighbours weren't happy, so we scaled it down. It worked out for the best as it would've stretched the budget. Having my friend next door to cook us dinner and help with the kids was invaluable during the three-month build and my in-laws have been great, cleaning up after the builders and project managing when we weren't around. Since then, every room’s been decorated in a modern Victorian style with some mid-century thrown in too. I've even set up an interior styling business samanthahicksinteriors.co.uk — which hope will encourage people to be colourful, bold and not be afraid to try something new.

This flat was a lucky find that just happened to fit most ofour criteria. We were looking for a place that had a little bit of character, and plenty of green space nearby for family walks and time in nature.
When we came across this flat in Ealing, it felt like everything fell into place. It’s in a Victorian building, so it has the kerb appeal I'd been hoping for, plus a balcony, a garage for storage and building furniture, and a bay window, which I'd always dreamt of having in my home. instantly began daydreaming about sunny afternoons spent sat on a bench beneath the bay window, looking out onto the green field opposite. We signed the rental agreement straight away and didn't look back. The interior décor left much to be desired and didn't fit my definition of homely at all. We replaced the red carpets with wooden flooring and painted all of the walls for an instant refresh. Then, room by room, we built and developed our interior style. A big issue that we faced was the size of the flat, and the lack ofa bedroom for Tornasz and I. It made the most sense for us to make the lounge a multipurpose room, so that David could have a we slept on a sofa space of his own. To begin with, bed, which was neither comfortable nor compact enough, so we decided to build a fold-away bed into a large recess in one of the walls. It’s really allowed us to use the space fully. Updating our flat has made me realise that buying new is rarely the best option and that the items need can almost always be built by us or bought second-hand. It truly has been a lesson in honing — my styling and DIY skills snippets of which share

_Expert advice Styling a dual-purpose room
13
Get more out of your space with these clever tricks @ Carefully consider the transition: how quickly, efficiently and easily can you switch the use of the room? Fold-away beds, such as Tosia's, collapsible chairs and furniture on castors are all examples of ways your space can be changed in seconds.
TP.
@ Storage is key for seamless living in a multipurpose room. Shelving and wall-hung cupboards can be useful where floor space is limited, as can sofas, beds, media units that
incorporate storage options. @ Custom-made isn’t always the cheaper option, but can offer more comfortable living in a dual-purpose room. Furniture can be built to fit specific spaces, or to neatly fold away out of sight, and unused nooks can be turned into storage, working or eating areas.
To make better use of available space, Tomasz built cupboard that doubles as a dining seat a

This house was actually my childhood home. My family moved here when | was just four years old and | lived here until left for university, aged 19. |
When my husband Nick and were expecting our second child five years ago, we felt we needed to upsize so that our growing family had more space to spread out. Meanwhile, my mum was looking to downsize. The idea of us swapping houses was dropped into conversation one day and it appeared to be the perfect solution for all of us. This house has always felt like home to me, but was keen to put my stamp on it and make some changes so that it better suited my family, while remaining sensitive to its soul and happy heartbeat created by my mum. To allow us more space, we knocked down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room and added a rear extension to create an open-plan hub. We also converted the loft into generous master bedroom. That allowed us to knock down the wall that separated the box bedroom from the main bathroom on the first floor so that we could create a large and luxurious family bathroom. I'm lucky to have a husband who trusts me to oversee the design elements in the house. worked very closely with the tradesmen to ensure everything ended up exactly as we wanted, but I'm afraid to admit that my contribution was mostly documenting the process on

"When we had the loft converted a couple of the chimney breast years ago, we had to remove as it was so large, which unfortunately meant the open fire in the living room became redundant. _Expert advice How to design a lighting system
@ Consider general lighting to illuminate the room as a whole. Would a pendant work best or a few well-positioned lamps?
Make sure your home shines bright
@ Use accent lighting to draw attention to specific features or spaces, such as wall art, a bathtub or a shelf of treasures.
@ Draw a lighting plan, but be aware you don't have to follow tradition. Think about how you want the space to look and feel, and work towards that.
@ Be mindful of the mood. Dimmers can help you to control the ambience of a room,
@ Allocate task lighting to any areas that you use for particular tasks, such as kitchen worktops. Dedicated illumination for these
while candles and string lights create a cosy vibe in the evenings. Lots of natural light
spaces will help you do the work you need to there, like prepping food, for instance.
will give your space a bright, fresh feel, so consider forgoing curtains for a sheer fabric.

@ The key to this look is to bring in lots of tropical plants. You can do this with botanical wallpapers and fabrics, or use pots of houseplants for a realistic look. @ Weathered and aged wood will give a rustic, bohemian quality to the scheme; look out for vintage pieces or choose dark-stained, modern
equivalents. @ Find soft, painterly prints that create the effect of dappled light filtering down on to the forest floor. Iridescent finishes add a touch of — — magic; use these as well as coloured glass to create glimmering highlights, like the glint of tropical birds. @ Striking monochrome stripes are a refreshing contrast to the fluid botanical patterns and give the look a strong, graphic edge that keeps it

YO
Pendant lights are ideal for making a feature in your kitchen and you can make your own using old tins. Paint the tins in colours to match your scheme or get creative with a motif. Just remember to get your work checked over by a qualified electrician to avoid any nasty shocks.
Takes 2? hours You will need
* Large tins
Prepare your tin for painting. Mask the inside with a plastic carrier bag, fixing its open top edge in position with masking tape. Run the top edge of the tape just below the lip of the tin as neatly as you can (pic B). The bare interior will help to reflect the light once the lamp is assembled. Now paint the outside of the tin. When
using spray paint, always work in a wellventilated area and protect any surrounding areas with a dust sheet or old newspaper.
ours were 6in (15cm) in diameter and 7in (18cm) tall * Can opener * Permanent marker * Drill with 1 18in —
(2.8cm) drill bit (or to match the diameter of
your lampholder thread) * Safety goggles and gloves * Needle file * Plastic carrier bag * Masking tape * Spray paint * Dust sheet or newspaper * White spirit and cotton buds * Three-core earthed cable (to your desired length) * Wire strippers or craft knife * Pendant lampholder * Small flathead screwdriver * LED Lightbulb Remove the lid of the tin from inside the lip of the top edge. Clean the tin and remove any labels and glue. Mark the centre ofthe tin’s base then, carefully, drill 3 12in (3.5cm) hole (pic A). Use a clamp or a friend with strong hands to hold the tin in place. a
Spray a few thin layers of paint, allowing each one to dry fully in between (pic C). Carefully peel the masking tape from
inside ofthe tin and pull out the plastic bag to reveal a clean interior. You can use a cotton bud and white spirit to carefully clean away any paint that may have leaked under the masking tape. Use a small strip of masking tape to prevent the fabric cord cover from fraying. Use wire strippers or a craft knife to prepare the wires in your cable for fixing onto the lampholder. Fit the lampholder following the manufacturer's instructions (pic D). Fit the other end of the cable to the ceiling rose, having firstly checked the height you want it to hang at. Insert a lightbulb and let your new light glow.

To avoid disappointment when choosing the right hue for your room, it’s important to consider the colour of the light that the room gets throughout the day. The daylight in north-facing rooms has a blue tinge, which will emphasise the blue tones in your paint choice. Reds and browns are well-suited for north-facing rooms as
nny
a
i
the blue light is balanced out by the warmer colours, but you could go for a blue shade instead to heighten the effect. Just remember that whatever colour you choose, the overall finish will be slightly cooler than you might expect. South-facing rooms benefit from yellow light, which makes orange tones richer and purple hues warmer. As these rooms remain bright all day long, you'll need to be extra careful when preparing the walls for painting as every lump and bump will show.

Light is also important when it comes to living with your newly decorated room. Making sure that you use the right lighting will make the difference between having a dark cave or a snug nook. Multiple fixtures will give you complete control over the amount of light in the room at different times of day. Put your overhead light and wall sconces on dimmer switches so that you can turn them up when you need them, but down when you want to create a cosier atmosphere. Table and floor lamps are useful for creating glowing pockets of light and brightening dark corners.

The dark walls of the hallway make a great backdrop for artwork and treasured pieces, too. Get creative and use them to create the ultimate gallery space. Matching the coving and skirting boards to the wall colour will make the walls seem taller. If you're feeling brave, paint the ceiling, too — the continuation of colour will draw your eyes up and add height to the space.

This romantic pairing is perfect for bedrooms and chilled-out sitting rooms. The midnight blue walls are reminiscent of starry skies and will create the perfect atmosphere for sleeping. The addition of dusky pink warms up what could feel like a cold blue, for a bold, but soft look. The light-reflecting quality of velvet makes it perfect for balancing out a dark room. It has amuch warmer effect than surfaces we would traditionally use to reflect light, such as glass or mirror finishes. Create highlights by choosing brass hardware and light fittings they'll feel a lot more luxurious than silver.

BLACK AND WHITE This high contrast look combines the darkest of tones with cool whites for a surprisingly bright effect. Note how the extra-wide coving is painted in the same colour as the ceiling; this brings the bright white down to the walls and stops black from enveloping the room entirely. This look will work well in larger rooms, as the expanse of white ceiling will balance out the black. It will also suit smaller rooms that you can see from a distance, such as a bedroom at the end of along hallway, as you'll be able to see the wide stretch of bright ceiling.

Create the feel ofa tropical jungle with gemstone hues. The green walls are reminiscent of palm leaves and the gilded headboard and yellow bedding create a sunny feel. Lemon yellow looks radiant in any room, but the dark green background really makes it sing. Paint your picture rail the same colour as the wall to accentuate the moulding and give subtle definition to the wall. A wide, white skirting board makes the floor seem larger and stops the green tone from dominating the room. For a smaller nod to this look, pair a mustard accent chair with an emerald green cushion.

To create a successful lighting scheme, start by thinking on a practical level. Consider every room as a different space and what its needs are. In the kitchen, you'll want task lighting over the worksurfaces, cooker, hob, sink and any other food preparation areas or cooking stations. This should ideally be combined with overhead spotlights or recessed lights for all-round illumination with a pendant or row of pendants over the dining table or island. Rise and fall pendants allow you to alter the intensity of the light while dimmer switches offer flexibility at

BATHROOM ZONES a When shopping for bathroom lighting, it’s important to check for IP ratings to make sure it’s safe
'
.
Not all lights are suitable for bathroom use and those which are will be clearly marked with an IP rating, which indicates how resistant the light is to dust and water. Bathrooms are divided into zones when it comes to lighting and each zone determines the type of lighting and IP rating that can be installed. « Zone Ois the space in the bath or shower itself, so any lighting here must be of low wattage and be rated at least IP67 as well as immersion-proof, « Zone is the area directly above the bath or shower to a height of 2.25m from the floor. Lights in Zone must have a minimum rating ofIP45 but it’s generally accepted that IP65 is most suitable. « Zone 2 stretches 60cm outside the to a height perimeter of the bath or shower of 2.25m from the floor. Here, a rating of at least IP44 is needed. The space around the basin within a 60cm radius ofany tap is also Zone 2. «

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your home
Choose compact
furniture
This space isn’t massive, but with clever planning, Sophie has managed to include all the elements a larger room might offer. The dressing table is created simply by attaching a cheap and cheerful white shelf onto IKEA brackets. It’s a real space saver, which allows room for a stool, and combining it with a mirror means it provides all the functionality of a traditional dressing table.
Add sleep-inducing greenery
Plants are a big style trend at the moment, but they also purify the air and can help to relieve stress and anxiety, which encourage good sleep. So they're a great addition to your bedroom. But aim to choose low-maintenance plants; dead plants don’t look good anywhere! Sophie has chosen a variety of trailing plants and greenery potted in macramé hangers to break up the pace of the room.

Style with confidence
Colour and texture can make or break a room, and Sophie has carefully chosen a bold palette that combines blush pinks with complementary golds and yellows, grounded with black accents. This scheme gives the room a playful feel, but by layering it with luxe velvets, abstract patterns and monochrome textures, she’s managed to create a relaxed look. The flowing bed drapes add the finishing touch.

But once it was on, loved it so much that we did another wall, then another, until the whole room was painted. We then looked at the option of built-in, floor-toceiling wardrobes, but the room is quite small so we decided to go for IKEA's mirrored Pax wardrobe, which was the perfect fit. I'm lucky that Tom’s really hands-on and he was the one who spent time getting the symmetry and height of the bedside tables exactly right a harder job than you might imagine. Once that was done and the bed was slotted in, started on the fun bit: dressing the room. It's never complete, though, as I'm always coming up with another little idea that want to incorporate into the space! |

Got a fave feature? Shout about it! Miriam loved the shape of her fireplace, but wanted to update it to make it more of a feature in the room. Wallpapering the chimney breast ina vibrant and tropical print and also painting the fire surround a blush pink has given the room an eye-catching focal point. ‘We fell in love with the wallpaper as soon as we saw it and feel it elevates the room 100 per cent, says Miriam.

plinge’ My experience... Our living room was boring us to tears. The magnolia walls just didn't reflect our personality and the floor was awash with Sophia's toys, as we had nowhere to store them. Not only that, but the room also felt cramped with a wall that divided the living room from the dining room. Firstly,
we hired
a builder to
remove the wall to open
up the room. Needing extra storage space, then got to work designing fitted cupboards online at Jali. We opted |
for a bespoke service to make the most out of the space. With a Victorian house, the walls are not often so straight, so this was the best way to get the best-fitting cupboards
and shelves.

Magnolia had ourfavourite colour combination green and pink. After deciding on the wallpaper, the next question was where to put it. After much discussion, we opted for a wallpapered chimney breast to create a focal
point and painted the remaining walls a deep green to match. Painting the walls green really warms up the room. We absolutely love our new living room. It feels so much more spacious and we're delighted at how much bigger the space feels. It’s practical, but full of personality.

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your home
Think outside the box The black and white tiles around the bath and behind the unit are actually vinyl flooring stuck to the wall.‘ saw vinyl used in a restaurant ona TV programme and thought it could work in the bathroom, says Jenny. ‘It was actually incredibly cheap; the whole roll only cost about £30 and it was easy to fit because it’s just glued on, and since there's no grout or gaps, it’s 100-per-cent waterproof. It’s also really durable and easily wiped down, which is especially useful when we have to bath the dog: |

Jenny wanted a streamlined look in the bathroom so rather than using a hanging shower caddy or messy shampoo bottles on the floor, she made space for an inset shelf to store her essential daily products. She chose brick-shaped tiles, from the same range as the chevron tiles, to make it stand out as a feature, and edged the shower wall with matching tiles for a finished look. She then chose a contemporary, matt black shower with concealed fittings to add to the minimal, sleek effect.

Play with shapes and materials
Jenny has chosen contrasting elements to create harmony and add balance to the look of her bathroom. Her bold choice of a black and white colour scheme is softened with pale pink accessories. She’s used round shapes, including matching mirrors, light fittings and basins, to add symmetry and balance the graphic square lines of the Crittall-style shower screen and vinyl tiles. Candle holders and a gold mirrored tray help to play off the proportions of the chunky wooden vanity unit. 104 yourhomestyle.uk

Precise planning was key for our bathroom update as we both work full-time and don't have another
bathroom, so we had to keep the schedule tight. seem to work backwards though, as I'd bought most of the accessories before the room was even planned, but it helps me mood board. Next, sat down with graph paper and played around to find the best layout. knew wanted a luxurious shower and free-standing bath, but to maximise the space we decided to put the bath behind the shower screen — a trick I'd seen on Pinterest. A carpenter friend then brought what wanted for the vanity unit to life. wanted a bold, monochrome look, inspired by my wardrobe. After checking it wasn’t structural, Dave knocked down the internal wall and then helped the plumber with the tiling and grouting, which not only saved time, but taught me new skills. The majority of the work was done in three weeks, but thankfully we were only without a bathroom for about four days. Ultimately, wanted to create a room that wasn't just functional, but also beautiful and relaxing to be in, and I'm so pleased we've done that. |

Method Heat the grill and cook the bacon on each side until very crisp, Chop into small chunks and combine with the breadcrumbs and 4 of the cheese then set aside. Boil the kettle to fill a large pan. When boiling vigorously in the pan add a pinch of salt and the macaroni. Cook for 9 minutes then add the asparagus and cook for a further 2 minutes. While the macaroni is cooking, melt the butter in a small thick-based saucepan, sprinkle in the flour and stir with a wooden spoon. Cook while stirring for minute then add the milk a little at a time, stirring continuously so it is absorbed into the flour and slowly makes a smooth sauce. If you get any lumps, don't panic, just beat vigorously with the wooden spoon and they'll disperse. Stir in the mustard, some black pepper and the remaining cheese. Once the macaroni and asparagus are cooked, drain well and return them to the pan. Pour over the cheese sauce and stir to coat the macaroni into a large oven dish, Tip sprinkle over the breadcrumb mixture and return to the grill for the top to melt and brown.

10 eating apples, such as Braeburns * 300g light brown muscovado sugar * 8 tbsp golden syrup * 225g unsalted butter, softened * 1 tsp vanilla extract * 1 heaped tsp Maldon sea salt
Metire: Blanch the apples in a pan of boiling water for 30 secs to remove the wax and help the caramel to stick. Remove them with a slotted spoon, then wipe the skins with kitchen paper. Remove the stalks and pierce each apple with a lolly stick or wooden skewer. Press the stick in far enough so it won't come out, but be careful not to go the whole way through the apple. Put the apples in the fridge while you make the caramel. Line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper. Put the sugar into a large saucepan with the syrup, butter and vanilla. Heat slowly over a medium heat for around 8 mins, or until the sugar has dissolved. Increase the heat, bringing the mixture to a rolling boil. Add a sugar thermometer and boil for around 8 mins or until the thermometer reaches 140°C ‘hard crack’ stage — if you don’t have a thermometer you can check by spooning a bit into a bowl of cold water. It should harden instantly and, when removed, be brittle and easy to crack. Stir through the salt. Remove the caramel from the heat. Submerge each apple into the caramel and twist it around using the stick. Make sure all but the very top is covered, the place each one on your baking tray. Continue until all the apples are covered. Be careful not to touch the caramel. Allow the coated apples to set for hour before serving. 1

Butter the raisin bread and cut the slices in half, diagonally. Lay the slices in an ovenproof baking dish so that the corners of the slices overlap. Beat the eggs in a bowl or large jug with the cream and Arctic coffee until they're well combined. Pour all the mixture over the slices of bread. Heat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas Mark4 and allow the pudding to soak while the oven comes up to heat. Sprinkle the sugar, generously, over the top and bake for 35-40 minutes so that the centre of the pudding has a wobble, but there's no runny liquid. We chat to award-winning designer and illustrator Emily Brooks about her life and career
\
‘ow did it all begin?
[i
Emily’s signature style is bright, colourful and full of fun
When had children, drawing began to play a meaningful part in my life. had a tough time after the birth of my second son, and creating artwork helped me to re-connect with who was underneath ‘mum life. The more worked with colour, the more it infiltrated my life in other ways. Positivity and vibrancy became part of my day again. In autumn 2017 created a small collection of greetings cards from my artwork and started a colourful wholesale business. Over the last few years it has grown into a stationery, gifting and lifestyle brand that I'm |

hugely proud of.
What does the rest of che year holdfor you?
It’s been a strange year with the virus, but it’s brought a fresh surge of inspiration and direction for me and my brand. My products have launched into John Lewis & Partners and Sainsbury's, and I'm growing my online shop as we speak to create an online destination for uplifting and colourful products and content. think we'll all need some positivity and colour in our lives after all this! |
“am a home be both
“ylish and practical?
Absolutely! Sometimes we can get frustrated when the ‘practical’impinges on the ‘stylish’ because life can be chaotic. Our living room can go from showroom to bomb site in
halfan hour. But, for me,
about injecting colour and style into the backdrop and basics of your home: wall colour, furniture, textures and surfaces. That way, day-to-day mess it's

still looks good. And it’s about
storage. Lots of storage.
Who are you stalking on Instagram?
love profiles that post colourful, quirky interiors, @home_ec_op or @homemilk, for example. also love the design and content of the female-support profile @freeda_en. |

Where do youfind
your inspiration?
obsessed with colour pairings. I've been known to interrupt strangers to ask if| could quickly take a pic of their I'm
green bag against a pink wall, as they'd make the perfect combo. Collecting colours is a hobby of mine. The inspiration for my illustration is rooted in realism, portraiture and drawing animals, or iconography that instils a positive emotive response. love to make my illustrations look as realistic as possible, while setting them ona colour-block backdrop to enhance their magic. |
What's your proudest career moment? Launching as a‘proper’ greetings card publisher at Top Drawer London in January 2018 was such an achievement for me. It took so much to get to that point. The card collection launching into Liberty London felt incredible and John Lewis buying my stationery range for Spring 2020 is possibly the biggest highlight to date. Let's see what happens with my new range of kitchen textiles and dinnerware items!
