WELCOME TO BUS SEARCH
The COVID clouds have cleared and the Australasian bus and coach sector is once again flourishing. Alongside traditional options, the focus is on the cutting edge of technological developments
To many in the industry, this is the same old Bus Search Buyers’ Guide that is loved and adored each year as an annual tool on the ‘what’s what’ and ‘who’s who’ in our sector. Many of the names that you are set to flick through won’t come as a surprise. But unlike before, the Bus Search for 2023 features a whole new raft of manufacturers and brands that have leapt upon the zero-emissions transition and created innovative vehicles that makes the Australian industry more exciting and varied than it has ever been.
The Bus Search Buyers’ Guide acts as a bookmark of each year in a fabled and historically mesmerising industry.
At the turn of every 12 months, the latest chassis, bodies and completely built vehicles go on display to see just how much everything has changed. The 2023 version is a significant milestone in the Guide.
In a friendly industry that remains
rethink the way the bus and coach sector conceptualises zero-emissions transport. In this Bus Search, you’ll see the mind-blowing fruit of many individuals and companies’ labour.
It starts with BLK Auto, who we welcome on our cover for the 2023 Guide. BLK Auto has steadily built its product range. In 2022, it pushed further into zero-emissions vehicles and emerged triumphantly with a new suite of products that are as exciting as they are logical progressions of the brand’s technology. Heading into 2023, the brand has both electric and hydrogen fuel-cell chassis that sit alongside the President and Senator ranges that are pushing for NSW Panel 4 procurement approval.
AN INNOVATIVE BASE
Not all companies are undergoing the total zero-emissions evolution of completely built buses that BLK Auto
Volvo Bus Australia is also turning to a battery electric chassis to remain ahead of the local competition as it will be promoting its new BZL Electric chassis well into 2023.
A BUFFET OF BODIES
When it comes to the top half of the bus, there are some major Australian bodybuilders who have partnered to provide the industry with exciting innovations. Irizar Asia Pacific is focusing on its quality luxury bodies that are suited to both buses and coaches of various applications. Volgren Australia is taking a varied approach, supplying traditional diesel bodies while also facilitating zeroemissions transitions with its range.
CELEBRATING COMPLETE BUILDS
Many brands are now working to create both chassis and bodies to act as a one-stop shop for the latest bus and coach technology. Australian company ARCC is one of many providing an entire package that rethinks the concept of sustainable transport vehicles. Bus Stop Sales is prepared for 2023 with some exciting new options coming from King Long and Isuzu, while Challenger Bus & Coach will continue escalating towards a Euro 6 range following an incredibly successful year. MercedesBenz continues to satisfy its legacy customers, while Foton Mobility and Nexport have both created intriguing approaches to zero-emissions bus technology. Hino’s Poncho will romp into 2023 as unique as ever, with Scania and Yutong both showing that they are leading the charge in all fuel sources when it comes to an incredibly diverse industry. Supporting this push are suppliers like Coachair, who have tailored products to suit the zero-emissions sphere. Enjoy taking a look at these new developments in our industry.

LEADING WITH ELECTRIC
MAN will continue showcasing the best of its diesel engine technology. Yet it’s a new electric chassis that is set to steal the show in 2023.
WORDS SEAN MORTELL IMAGES MAN TRUCK & BUS
Spanning across diesel and battery electric technology, MAN’s five-chassis fleet covers many applications in Australia.
Through its range of coaches, school and intercity buses, MAN’s high-quality chassis and commitment to safety is clear. When it comes to its metro city buses and latest electric chassis that it recently unveiled, MAN is on a mission to expand its zero-emissions capabilities in Australia.
The star of the show is MAN’s new electric low-floor chassis. The Lion’s Chassis E LF was first shown at the Bus & Coach Expo in 2022. The fully low-floor electric chassis is modelled off the MAN Lion’s City E chassis, which was voted the
International Bus of the Year for 2023.
Head of MAN Bus & Coach Crinel Geaboc says the new electric model sits front and centre in MAN’s offerings for 2023 and beyond.
“We’re excited about being able to offer the Lion’s Chassis E LF a bit earlier than initially expected,” Geaboc told ABC. “We first thought that we were going to have to wait longer but the timeline reduced, which is great.
“It’s been almost two years and now we’re set to release it. It comes exactly in time to deliver the electric chassis to operators in New South Wales, Brisbane and Victoria, where there’s so much excitement about electric buses.”
Geaboc says the prototype of the
electric chassis is expected to arrive in Australia in the middle of 2023. Once it arrives, Geaboc says the chassis will be available for demonstrations, with orders now currently open.
Yet MAN’s offerings aren’t restricted to electric technology. MAN’s leading diesel chassis include its intercity and charter bus models. Geaboc says the engines featured in these products are the most advanced technology in diesel that customers can source in Australia.
“We have this diesel technology available in a model that varies between 10.5m and 12.5m long in two different lengths,” Geaboc says. “We also have diesel coaches available that feature the typical MAN high-end finish while also

being top quality in terms of reliability and safety for a coach.”
The coach chassis available from MAN ranges from 12.5m to 13.5m long threeaxle variants that feature 510 hp and Euro 6 engine emission technology. Geaboc says the power on these diesel coach chassis make them a unique feature of the Australian diesel coach market.
“These are the best performing engines for such an application,” Geaboc says. “It has lots of muscle packed into it to help the coaches get up hills and work through different Australian climates.”
Geaboc says MAN’s investment in safety is emblematic across all chassis in its fleet.
The buses and coaches feature driver assistance packages as standard that also work on split windscreens. With adaptive cruise control, EBS, emergency braking, automatic wipers and lights, lane guard warnings and tyre pressure
monitor systems included, Geaboc says MAN’s safety packages cover all bases for Australian customers.
“The safety packages on these buses and coaches are outstanding,” Geaboc says. “One of our salesman recently drove one of these coaches from Melbourne to Sydney. When visibility was reduced by poor weather conditions in the dark, the bus automatically began to reduce speed.
“The driver soon found out there was a traffic jam ahead. The bus knew before he did. How exciting is it to see MAN’s engineering at work?”
It all points towards a heavy focus on the Australian industry. Geaboc says he’s excited about what MAN can bring down under in 2023 and beyond.
“The new electric chassis is made in Australia and increases local content,” Geaboc says. “We want to support local manufacturing here for a long time to come.”
Geaboc is the first to admit that 2022 was a difficult year for the Australian industry. With supply chain issues running rampant, the MAN Bus & Coach head says the company did its best in trying circumstances.
“With delays caused by the supply chain and delivery schedules being impacted, no one was immune from the effects,” Geaboc told ABC. “It was difficult to meet commitments to deliver buses on time, yet it was understandable.
chassis in 2023. Having received positive feedback about the bus globally, Geaboc says the chassis is set to take Australia by storm.
Geaboc says MAN is aiming to have every second bus delivered in 2030 be an electric model. The release of this electric chassis goes a long way towards meeting the target.

“We’ve now been able to increase the number of units to deliver next year as well.”
Leading the charge for MAN’s resurgence is its electric Lion’s Chassis E LF that will drive MAN’s commitment to zero-emissions
“I had the opportunity to test the bus on a track in Munich after hearing the strong customer feedback,” Geaboc says. “I was impressed by how the bus performed.
“I believe it’s a chassis that we will be very proud of, and we hope the customer will also enjoy the highquality product too.”

DEEPENING ITS CATALOGUE
Volvo Bus Australia is coming off the back of a massive year. Following the release of its first electric chassis down under, Volvo is rolling out more new models in 2023
IMAGES VOLVO BUS AUSTRALIA
Whether it be new vehicles on the horizon or an evolution of its electric chassis, Volvo Bus Australia is continuing to diversify its products for 2023 and beyond. Starting with a steady transition of popular chassis to Euro 6 editions and continuing into battery electric and double decker models, Volvo is ensuring it’s producing enough variety to satisfy the Australian market.
Volvo’s battery electric foray leads the way as the manufacturer heads into 2023. The Volvo BZL Electric chassis was launched in 2021 in Australia. The chassis was more than just a technological first – the Volvo BZL Electric was also the first Volvo chassis able to go below a 10.8m length for operators.
“The BZL Electric is a fully electric
chassis that can be built from 9.9m to 12.5m,” Volvo Bus Australia national bodybuild and sales engineering manager Mark Fryer told ABC. “The BZL Electric also has three different safety systems onboard rather than just the one.”
Fryer says the Volvo BZL Electric’s complete low-floor design is what sets it apart from the rest. The BZL Electric allows for a full low floor experience from the very front of the bus all the way to the rear axle. Traditionally, buses would turn to high floor at that stage to go above an engine. Yet the Volvo BZL Electric is designed to give accessibility to passengers of all demographics, improving the passenger experience.
For those not fully equipped with the infrastructure to make the zero-emissions transition, the Volvo B5LH S-Charge

Hybrid Euro 6 model is another chassis that Volvo is proud to be offering. With a five litre engine installed, the B5LH S-Charge has the ability to switch to electric mode when travelling under 20 kilometres per hour.
“Volvo also has the ability to zone the bus and turn it into its electric mode,” Fryer says. “It’s very useful in school zones and other city areas. An example is at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance, where we run the bus in its electric mode through there.
“We also can zone it at bus stops to keep buses nice and quiet and remove air pollution. Our S-Charge was the first hybrid bus to run through a heritagelisted site globally when it went into operation at Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain National Park.”
Fryer says these examples prove how the B5LH S-Charge hybrid can rely on diesel for longer distance travel while also being able to switch to an electric mode without any need for infrastructure to support battery electric buses.. It lends itself to sustainable public transport without requiring customers to invest in electric infrastructure.
Volvo Bus Australia will continue building on its renowned diesel products. Volvo Bus Australia general manager Mitch Peden says Volvo is building upon its B8R and B8RLE chassis to now produce Euro 6 options alongside the traditional Euro 5 models.
“Our B8R products are made to just keep going – they are so reliable and sturdy,” Peden told ABC. “We have operators around the country successfully running the B8R range of products in city, school and charter applications, and the feedback we consistently get is around the reliability of the product – it really is designed to get uptime as a priority for operators.”
The final Volvo product rounding out its range is the B8L double decker. The Euro 6 chassis is designed for city, route and on demand applications. After being a popular chassis in Europe and Asia, the B8L, which has the same driveline as the B8R but with an eight litre engine, is now being sold in Australia. It all showcases the evolution that Volvo Bus Australia is continuing to undergo.
WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2023
Despite a deep catalogue of chassis, Volvo Bus Australia has a new product ready to sell down under. The B13R Euro 6 model will finish bodybuild and expect its first delivery to customers to come in 2023. It’s already on sale for Australian customers to order.
“It’s designed for long distance charter work due to its bigger motor,” Fryer told ABC. “It has 500hp to give it a bit more grunt. Despite this increase in hp, it has reduced fuel usage by about nine per cent.
“We also reduced tailpipe emissions. The new electric system gives us more scope to use telematics to see different functions in the vehicle,” Peden told ABC.
Volvo Bus Australia will focus on the roll-out of the B13R chassis while also continuing to promote its BZL Electric model. There’s only a few on the road currently, however Volvo is certain it will ensure the lengthy research and development phase that went into the model will come to fruition in a busy 2023.
“We’re really excited about the BZL Electric deliveries in 2023,” Peden says. “Having zero-emissions transport is exciting for all of us in Australia – it will be excellent to finally see the product in operation with many Volvo customers around the country.
“The B13R will be brilliant, and we’re so keen to see volume deliveries of our electric bus arriving for our valued customers.”

CONFIRMING QUALITY
IMAGES IRIZAR ASIA PACIFIC
Irizar Asia Pacific has been working hard on ensuring its two leading products meet customer demands and requirements for both safety and quality build.
In the i6 school charter vehicle body and the i6S coach model, Irizar Asia Pacific managing director Steve Heanes is satisfied.
“We want the industry to know that we’re here and we’ve got two great products available depending on the customer’s application,” Heanes told ABC. “We’re flexible with our options and can provide all customers with a quality product.”
The i6 and i6S models are both mainstays of Irizar’s product range currently available in Australia. Heanes says both will remain at the forefront of the bodybuilder’s offerings for 2023.
“The i6 is the workhorse of the Irizar family,” Heanes says. “It goes into both school and charter applications and offers great comfort from a passenger perspective.
“It has the flexibility to do both school or resource work, while it can also be used as a vehicle for day charters.”
The i6 is currently working in regional Western Australia, the Northern Territory and far north Queensland. Heanes says the school and charter body style has been a great asset for operators and for the Irizar brand.
The i6s coach body is obtainable in a singular configuration with a number of options accessible both internally and externally on all current European chassis in the market.
Over the past four years, Heanes says the i6S has established itself as a top-end coach. He says companies have preferred it as a coach body
due to being stylish and reliable while providing a low cost of ownership.
Heanes says these two vehicles will remain at the front of Irizar’s fleet for the foreseeable future.
Alongside this, Irizar is currently working on offering more safety packages for customers and chassis providers. This includes the brand’s iService package, which provides a full maintenance offering for the body. It ranges from two to five years to give customers on short
term contracts peace of mind and a fixed cost up front.
It allows Irizar to be set to launch in 2023. Heanes says 2022 was on track to be the brand’s largest year yet in the market, before shipping constraints and supply chain issues disrupted the strong start to the year.
“Despite these issues, this year has been one of our better years and we continue to grow,” Heanes says.
“With our strong product offerings and a big order book, it’s looking good for Irizar heading into 2023.”
WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2023
Although Irizar will take its two main products into 2023, the brand will also begin some new projects in 2023.
Heanes says the bodybuilder is set to investigate alternative power vehicles for various applications, with the view of having the vehicles potentially available at the end of 2023 at the earliest.
“While we’re wanting to grow and stabilise the product to a degree, we’re also looking to explore the
alternate fuel sector,” Heanes told ABC. “Especially in the resource area, where we have demand for high safety features and zero-emissions vehicles.”
Heanes says Irizar will ensure these new forays continue to prioritise passenger comfort.
“The market is looking strong, and we’re keen to see what we can do in the future,” Heanes says. “We’re looking to evolve our vehicles to take us into 2023 and beyond.”

Volgren’s range starts with its champion product, the Optimus. In 2023, the body
three different battery electric chassis. While doing this, the company is also developing the bus body on several other key global OEMs in the industry to emphasise its new energy focus. Tessari is also testing a new hydrogen version of the Volgren body for 2023.
Tessari says the modern Optimus model was originally designed in 2013 in collaboration with the Monash University Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture. The body has been developed to be both technically superior and meet the needs of operators, drivers and passengers. With the unique Swiss-designed Co-Bolt® system construction technology featured, Tessari says Volgren has built a bus that is lighter, more spacious, stronger and markedly safer than other Australianproduced route buses.
parts of the country have come to know and trust.”
The Optimus also comes in an electric model, ranging from 9.9m to 12.5m.
“With every battery electric bus built, Volgren has improved its processes. We can comfortably say now that building an electric bus is second nature for our

proportion of local production.”
Also featuring in Volgren’s versatile fleet is the Endura bus. Tessari says the body combines engineering excellence with outstanding durability. Volgren has built the Endura model to withstand exacting use in the toughest of Australian conditions.
“This is a proven long-life bus,” Tessari says. “When you purchase it, you’ll be buying an Australian-designed vehicle with a corrosionresistant body, meaning lower fuel consumption, less wear-and-tear and maintenance, and cheaper repairs over the bus’s life.”
Volgren’s fleet also includes the Audace from its parent company, Marcopolo. Tessari says the new-look Audace 1050 is a versatile bus that is ideal for school, charter, mining or long distance coach applications. The product comes in either a 57 fixed seat or 53 reclining seat model, with both buses featuring high levels of customisation and flexibility. This includes options for toilets or wheelchair lifts to be installed.
“The Marcopolo Audace is a quality flexible bus that is paired with an outstanding European chassis,” Tessari says. “It offers passenger comfort while being competitively priced. Like all Volgren vehicles, the Audace 1050 is supported by Australia’s largest aftersales network.”
This diverse product range showcases Volgren’s ability to multiply its available vehicles year upon year. Tessari says the bodybuilder can continue evolving by keeping its product design solid while also adapting it to new technologies and innovating further.
“With more than 10,000 buses built and

delivered in Australia, Volgren has gained the trust from the market in both our products and services,” Tessari says. “By leading the evolution to zero-emission product alternatives, Volgren can diversify its portfolio and continue being involved in several Australian projects.
“We aim to continue creating jobs across all of our three factories in the country while delivering new buses to key Australian operators.”
WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2023
Volgren has numerous new body options ready to launch in 2023, starting with its Optimus product. The bodybuilder is primed to launch a hydrogen version of the model by the middle of 2023 to match the recently released battery electric product.
Volgren will launch the new body options with different global OEMs. It all makes for an exciting year ahead for the bodybuilder.
“We have been heavily investing in project development and will soon have many other product options to offer,” Tessari told ABC. “This will join all of the work being done in the battery electric field, while we’re very close to launching our hydrogen body option with Wrightbus in the UK.”
This exciting technology stems from Volgren’s parent company, Marcopolo.
Tessari says the Australian bodybuilder is also looking to bring a new Brazilian product down under to showcase the best of global zeroemissions bus and coach models. Volgren will ensure it maintains its high standards it is renowned for in Australia while introducing the latest bodies.
“Volgren is also working closely with Marcopolo Brazil to bring the latest coach bus technology, the Marcopolo G8, into Australia during 2023,” Tessari says.
“The industry can still expect Volgren to provide innovation, flexibility and quality in our new technology.”

FUTURE PROOFING YOUR FLEET
The industry is currently brimming with firsts and novel releases.
The 100 per cent Australian designed and built buses released by the Aluminium Revolutionary Chassis Company (ARCC) are no different. As the local market takes a sustainable turn, ARCC’s chassis are leading the charge for Australian manufacturers.
ARCC’s vehicles include Australia’s first lightweight, fully bolted aluminium bus chassis with an integrated bolted aluminium body solution that can be provided to customers in a variety of configurations, not just completely built.
ARCC managing director Peter Murley says the company’s leading aluminium chassis is revolutionary due to the fact
it isn’t just tailored towards a battery electric fuel source.
“The bespoke nature of our bolted skateboard architecture means it’s agnostic to either battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell powertrains,” Murley told ABC. “This essentially future proofs ARCC’s vehicles.
“This interchangeable feature would enable a no regret approach for states and territories when it comes to selecting the technology to transition to zeroemissions with.”
Within this single aluminium model, ARCC has already seen its chassis applied to both fully electric and hydrogen fuel cell buses. The ARCC chassis has variants that enable it to provide vehicles with
either a 16-tonne or 18-tonne gross mass vehicle. Murley says the lightweight nature of the chassis enables ARCC to deliver a 16-tonne version without having to lower passenger numbers.
The 18-tonne model uses full Scania running gear that Murley says is known and proven to the market.
“These chassis provide a real world advantage to operators in terms of parts and maintenance as we use the existing Scania product suite,” Murley says. “ARCC’s technology is the missing piece to move the wheels on a zero-emissions transport future.”
Murley says the lightweight nature of the aluminium chassis is a main feature that differentiates it in the market.

It can also start off as a battery electric bus and transition to a hydrogen bus in future if operators wish.
ARCC also allows customers to view the bus during building, while providing easy repair solutions if required.
With a totally new body design set to be launched in 2023 to partner hydrogen projects around Australia, Murley says ARCC’s way of building zero-emissions buses is completely unique.
“We are developing a totally new approach to how buses can be supplied, which will benefit customers due to the additional options available around how they procure their buses,” Murley says. “The ARCC Box in a bus system is designed to not only promote flexibility but also scalability, which is important given the issues we’ve seen with supply chains and tight labour markets.”
The novel idea comes under a new Bird Cage solution for zero-emissions buses, which ARCC says reduces the time of manufacture by up to 30 per cent. Murley says this technique also allows for buses to be developed into a format to make scale and export more efficient. As a result, manufacturing hours and assembly costs can be kept as low as possible.
After using 2022 to establish partnerships with Macquarie Bank and Origin Energy, Murley says ARCC’s revolutionary way of building chassis has set it apart in the industry when
WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2023
After spending much of 2022 working on its new partnerships with Macquarie Bank and Origin Energy, ARCC will continue to emphasise industry connections to provide turn key solutions for customers. Murley says ARCC’s collaboration with these industry bodies starts from the ethical capture of energy through to the provision of infrastructure, finance solutions and ongoing maintenance through support services.
“It is ARCC’s belief that there must be a coalition of partners to assist operators and governments to address the challenges of the roll out at scale of zero-emissions buses,” Murley told ABC. “These partnerships place ARCC in a position to assist
the industry in its evaluation of solutions and the provision of locally designed, manufactured and supported vehicles.”
While it works with industry members, ARCC also has some exciting events occurring in 2023. This includes the deployment of the first Australian built and designed hydrogen route buses with Red Bus Services in New South Wales, Melbourne’s TSA and ComfortDelGro (CDC) in Geelong.
“Alongside our partnerships is an innovative fresh body design that we will be launching in 2023 with the Melbourne hydrogen projects we have with TSA and CDC,” Murley says.

it comes to working with energy companies. The ARCC managing director says he hopes the industry sees the total focus that ARCC has put into developing exciting technology for the zero-emissions mobility space.
“Since 2016, ARCC has been in the business of disrupting the status quo by focusing on technology solutions that are lightweight and allow for integration with a variety of drivetrains and power solutions,” Murley says. “The concept of using less resources to achieve more throughout the total design and manufacturing process has driven the ARCC team.”

BROADENING ITS HORIZONS
BLK AUTO
Releases in many different bus and coach spaces has created a versatile fleet offering for BLK Auto. After building and designing buses for Australia’s unique conditions, BLK Auto is continuing to turn its eye towards tailoring new vehicles to the local market.
This includes ensuring its diverse range can fit specifications required for the Transport for New South Wales Bus Procurement Panel 4.
“With the Panel 4 and for other New South Wales services, we’re pushing our Senator and President range vehicles,” BLK Auto managing director Jason Pecotic told ABC. “These two vehicles will ideally suit school bus and charter work.”
The President and Senator ranges pushing for NSW Panel 4 approval includes the Senator and President bodies that are fitted on top of MAN chassis.
BLK Auto has had a busy year diversifying its Australian range. In the bodies and chassis sector, its Cooper DX joins the Senator 8 and 9 models, as well as the President 2, 3 and 10 options for two and three axle coaches. When it
low floor and Citystar ultra low floor combo also lead the way for BLK Auto.
The President body in the two or three axle option also joins the Citystar ultra low floor as bodies only that can be fitted onto chassis for operators. In the chassis only sector, BLK Auto’s foray into battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell President 2 and 3 coach options has been a hit. The brand also offers battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell versions of the Citystar ultra low floor chassis to market.
Pecotic says this range summarises the key products that BLK Auto can offer the Australian market.
“Our range is diverse and hopefully caters to all operators in Australia,” Pecotic says. “We’re coming to market with a deep catalogue of vehicles for all applications, whether it be matching bodies with European chassis or mating our battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell chassis to support local content.”
Pecotic says BLK’s zero-emissions range is quickly coming to the fore. BLK Auto now has both a hydrogen fuel cell chassis and a battery electric chassis that it has supplied to bodybuilder Volgren in
also be pushing for these zero-emissions buses to be servicing in New South Wales.
These zero-emissions options prove BLK Auto’s future is in new energy buses and coaches. With the product range evolving rapidly in the past 18 months, Pecotic will continue providing a variety of fuel source options for the local market. He says partnering with local companies is a key target for 2023 and beyond.
“The vehicles, whether they be coaches or school buses, are Australian designed products,” Pecotic says. “They offer a competitively priced option with all the components and functions that are required in Australia.
“Supporting local employment in Australia is important to us. We want to continue supporting local jobs and seeing the money stay in Australia.”
By continuing to combine with companies like Volgren, as well as

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2023
BLK Auto’s immediate focus turns towards New South Wales, as the brand wants to be approved by Transport for NSW’s Panel 4 to provide its buses to operators in both Sydney and NSW.
“Next year we hope to supply our buses and coaches to Sydney and further NSW operators – it’s our big focus,” Pecotic told ABC. “We want Panel 4 approval so we can supply these buses, specifically our electric and hydrogen fuel cell chassis, as they’re exciting products.”
Although BLK Auto has made a concerted effort to expand its zero-emissions range, Pecotic is adamant the brand will continue supplying all fuel sources when it comes to its catalogue of products. Whether it be the trusted coaches that BLK Auto has supplied Australia for years or the new energy models that are continuing to expand locally, Pecotic says the brand will grow both sides of its fleet range.
“We’re maintaining both our diesel and our zero-emissions sides as we expect the zero-emissions bus space to continue evolving,” Pecotic says. “We’re well placed to position ourselves strongly for the transition from diesel to only zeroemissions chassis.
“We will still maintain our diesel fleet requirements for the market while we progressively move towards the supply of zero-emissions buses as the market requires.”

EXPANDING THE PRODUCT RANGE

Aorganisation, Bus Stop Sales has a wide range of traditional diesel and electric products. Following a busy year that saw the distributor of the King Long and Isuzu range unveil King Long’s latest electric models to the Australian market, Bus Stop now has a significant assortment of zero-emissions vehicles on offer.
“Bus Stop continues to offer the widest range of electric buses and coaches in the market,” Bus Stop Sales dealer principal Pete White told ABC.
The range starts with the two King Long EVolution products. The high-floor, Australian Design Rule (ADR) compliant coach version of the King Long product was released in 2022 ahead of the Bus & Coach Expo. Not long after, the EVolution low floor version arrived to complement the product range. The full urban product is available now and can be used as an

bus can take between 53 and 83 seated passengers. In 2023, the King Long 9m to 10m Midi bus / coach will continue to be a major offering for the local market.
Above, left to right: From diesel to the latest EVolution electric chassis, Bus Stop’s range is continuing to grow
Opposite below: Bus Stop will continue its exploration of zero-emissions bus and coach technology in 2023 electric urban route bus. The 43 seater plus standees chassis has underpinned the EVolution low floor partnership with bodybuilder Volgren to provide a 12.5m electric option for the local market.
“Both of these EVolution products have been custom designed from the ground up for the Australian market,” White says. ‘The components purchased within our range are market leading, containing global quality components with specifications that are much higher than others in the market.
“We’ve used this technology to develop solutions for our customer base across a wide range of applications, including school, low-floor urban buses and mining, to demonstrate full electric and zeroemissions capabilities.”
White says Bus Stop is continuing to focus its energy on the current EVolution low-floor chassis that it is partnering with Volgren bodies. The combined product was displayed at the Expo and will remain as the mainstay of Bus Stop’s cutting edge electric offerings. White says the core product is set to be joined by other quality diesel vehicles.
Alongside the EVolution models in the King Long range is the two diesel options. The 12-13m diesel or fully electric
“Further to our electric range, we’re also demonstrating we have a wide array of diesel buses in our mid-sized Midi bus and the 12.5m full size product,” White says. “The latest generation of King Long products are certainly world class and are a real display of the capability and growth that King Long has seen and committed to in order to offer quality products for the Australian market.
“Vehicles have been custom designed based on market feedback. The high quality of components purchased, such as from ZF, VDO, WABCO and Thermo King air-conditioning, means the product is comparable to anything available domestically or imported from China or Europe.”
In addition to the King Long range, Bus Stop will also focus on delivering Isuzu I-Bus models to the Australian industry. This includes the NQR 32-seat I-Bus option, which can work in the school, charter and mining sectors as a mini bus that is fully compliant with New South Wales’s procurement scheme.
“The I-Bus, powered by an Isuzu chassis, is simply brilliant,” White says. “It’s not a complex product, but it is an ideal school bus for city and regional applications. The product is in a class of its own because it can be run on an LR licence.”
With the EVolution low and high floor chassis options both being released in 2022, Bus Stop Sales is set to grow its zero-emissions capabilities even further in 2023 and beyond. White says maintaining the partnership with Volgren in supplying a complete electric EVolution low floor model to the Australian market remains critical.
While doing so, Bus Stop will also keep investigating new technology to bring into Australia. White says the industry should watch this space to see what Bus Stop will release in 2023.
“Bus Stop continues to strive to offer the widest bus solutions to the Australian industry while being fully supported by our national team,” White told ABC. “Bus Stop will continue reviewing the product needs of the industry.

CELEBRATING AN ELECTRIC RELEASE
Burleigh facility Martin Hall told ABC. “It is currently the largest battery pack in operation in the Australian market.
“It’s something we’re very proud of – it’s designed for the Australian climate and for Australian operators.”
Hall says the ZDI-450 model was borne during COVID lockdowns, with the design, engineering and manufacturing happening in the past couple of years.
Despite the impacts of the pandemic slowing the process, Hall says the model gave the BusTech Group’s team a project to focus on.
The first four models of the standard 12.5m, two door buses were first delivered in October and November 2022. With Proterra batteries from America, the bus contains four battery packs – two on the floor and the other two on the roof.
“One thing that makes this bus different is our in-house engineers have designed a powertrain module that slots in and out of the back of the bus,” Hall says. “It’s a self-contained module that can be installed and removed in two
ZDI-450 has ZF axles and WABCO steering and suspension alongside traditional and familiar parts found on most manufacturers on the market currently.
The electric bus model comes with a minimum six-year warranty for batteries and battery management systems. Hall says the warranty can extend out to 12 years if needed.
“It gives the customers peace of mind,” Hall says. “Like every electric bus, the running costs for the ZDI-450 are also profoundly reduced and constantly optimised.”
The ZDI-450 has normal regenerative capabilities increasing the daily range. The bus can travel for up to 450 kilometres before needing charging, which takes between two and five hours depending on how depleted the battery is upon returning to the depot. Hall says the entire product has made the BusTech Group team incredibly proud.
WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2023
After the model was tested successfully with a variety of chargers, the ZDI-450 is ready to hit Australian roads. It’s been delivered to customers and is set to continue being delivered in 2023.
Hall says BusTech Group has grand plans for the zero-emissions model. The manufacturer intends to provide a similar fuel cell option to provide a complete green energy product range.
“The benefit of the ZDI-450 that we manufactured in-house is it’s absolutely designed and ready for pantograph charging and other plug-in charging capabilities,” Hall told ABC. “The design of the model and powertrain makes it perfect for fuel cell integration.
“There’s no engineering reworking required. We’re keen to get a hydrogen version out and get more battery electric buses rolling out in Queensland and Australia.”

IMAGES CHALLENGER BUS & COACH
It’s been a big year for Challenger Bus & Coach. The Australian owned, designed and fully supported bus and coach manufacturer has enjoyed the return of in-person events in 2022, with its premier models on full display at BusVic’s Maintenance Conference and October’s Australasian Bus & Coach Expo.
Heading into 2023, Challenger Bus & Coach sales manager Dan Campbell says the V10 and V12 buses will continue to be at the forefront of Challenger’s offerings to the Australian market, except now they’ll come with the availability of a
now we have Euro 6 available too.”
Campbell says the added option for reduced engine emissions should continue to boost sales.
The changes should only serve to make Challenger coaches an even hotter proposition for Australian customers, not that they needed much help. In the leadup to the Bus & Coach Expo in Sydney, Challenger’s V10 bus that it planned to bring along to showcase was sold. It ensured a hasty late change for the Expo but proved the popularity of the products in the market in 2022.

“We’re excited to transition to Euro 6 engines in 2023.”
With its two high-quality coaches, Challenger Bus & Coach has excelled in 2022. It’s now using this momentum to deliver its V10 and V12 vehicles to more customers in 2023.

exciting move for Challenger.
When it comes to the V10, the 10.5m coach can take up to 45 seats. The V10 model sold on the eve of the 2022 Bus Expo was built with a toilet and kitchen included, as well as a wood grain interior. The V12 model is a larger 12.3m coach that has up to 57 seats.
Campbell says both vehicles in the Challenger fleet can be adapted to suit client needs.
“Both of the V10 and V12 are really versatile,” Campbell says. “The models may be different sizes, but everything inside is fully adaptable.
“We’ve pre-sold vehicles to be delivered next year with wheelchair lifts and toilet equipped. We can do anything from a standard school bus to a premium coach with reclining leather seats, dishwashers and coffee machines installed.”
The slight additions to the V10 and V12 have stirred plenty of excitement within the Challenger team. After seeing sales triple in 2022 compared to previous years, the Australian brand has also seen repeat customers and orders for the first time.
Joining the success of its vehicles is Challenger’s spare parts business, Australasian Bus and Coach Parts. Campbell and the Challenger team will continue to stock extremely well-priced parts for all vehicle brands, not just for Challenger buses and coaches.
He says Challenger will announce exciting offers for parts in early 2023.

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2023
After a whirlwind finish to 2022, Challenger will spend the new year delivering on the quality vehicles it has in build. While the brand does this, it also has some new vehicles in the works for 2023.
“We do also have an eye on a couple of new projects underway,” Campbell told ABC. “This includes a smaller vehicle in a V8 model, which will be a 25-to-30 seat vehicle.”
Alongside this concept of a smaller V8 vehicle is Challenger’s first zero-emissions bus and coach in the form of a low-floor battery electric model. Campbell says both of these new models will still be part of Challenger’s Australian-owned, designed and fully supported fleet of quality products.
He says these models
are incredibly exciting for Challenger as it looks to continue its expansion in Australia.
“The uptake we’ve had since the BusVic conference and the Expo in 2022 has created momentum that we’re taking into 2023,” Campbell says.
Yet Challenger’s 2023 evolution won’t just be limited to vehicles. In 2022, the manufacturer developed bases in Brisbane and Perth to go with its Melbourne depot. With more growth expected for Challenger, it has its eyes on further expansion.
“In 2023 we’re now looking at sites in Sydney,” Campbell says. “We’re hoping for, and forecasting, significant growth for the Challenger brand next year.”
using the finest quality products to construct vehicles that will develop its footprint in the Australian industry.
“We now see customers buying multiple vehicles at a time from us,” Campbell says. “We also see repeat orders from customers buying multiple vehicles. It’s really exciting to see customers respecting and loving our products.
“We’re hoping to grow and get new customers in 2023 while fulfilling our existing orders. Once customers see our buses and coaches, we know they’re never disappointed.”

ADDING THE MERCEDES TOUCH
McKenzie’s Tourist Services has become a Victorian public transport institution. The operator credits its fleet of Mercedes-Benz buses as a major factor in its success.
IMAGES MERCEDES-BENZ
McKenzie’s Tourist Services is confident it has determined the perfect solution for its charter and school bus services.
The company, based in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, has taken delivery of 13 new Mercedes-Benz OC 500 RS buses with Irizar i6 bodies in 2021 and in 2022. It has five more coming in early 2023.
McKenzie’s runs a fleet of 60 buses and coaches that operate all across Victoria and have an average age of just under eight years old. All but seven of the vehicles are Mercedes-Benz products, reflecting the company’s confidence in the brand and the support it provides.
Brad Sanders is the general manager at McKenzie’s and has been with the company for more than 30 years.
With his enviable experience, Sanders has a clear view of the benefits of the
Mercedes-Benz bus package.
“We get a lot of feedback from customers who go out of their way to say just how nice our buses are,” Sanders told ABC. “Mercedes-Benz buses are actually a key part of our marketing strategy because people know it is a quality product.
“The Mercedes-Benz engine and transmission are smooth and quiet, the ride and handling is excellent, it has all the advanced safety technology and the Irizar bodies also deliver a premium experience.”
Sanders says safety is paramount at McKenzie’s. The operator is conscious that everything it does is to ensure the safety of passengers, as well as drivers and other road users. Sanders says Mercedes-Benz’s full suite of products feature advanced safety features, making the buses an attractive option.
ABC 2023 BUS SEARCH BUYERS’ GUIDE 54 busnews.com.au
Mercedes-Benz buses use the latest radar and camera technology as part of its Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS), which can complete emergency braking in the event of an incident without the input of the driver. It can even automatically sense and brake for moving pedestrians in urban environments with high levels of foot traffic.
Other safety features include Lane
a safe distance from the vehicle in front in an effort to curb driver fatigue.
McKenzie’s is also impressed with the engine and transmission package in the Mercedes-Benz buses and is pleased with low operating costs, including excellent fuel economy.
The new batch of buses features the Mercedes-Benz OM 457 LA (Euro 5) sixcylinder engine that is rated at 360hp and 1600Nm of torque. It is paired with a six-speed ZF EcoLife torque convertor automatic transmission with an integrated hydraulic retarder.
“It is quite hilly where we are based in Healesville, so we certainly appreciate the performance of the engine,” Sanders says. “We couldn’t be happier with the transmission – it is so smooth that it is really hard to notice the shifts.
“The ZF transmission’s five-stage retarder is so good that you often don’t need to use the service brakes. I came down from Lake Mountain in Victoria and was able to control the descent smoothly and safely entirely with the retarder.”
Sanders says the Mercedes-Benz buses in the McKenzie’s fleet have provided good reliable service for many years. He says McKenzie’s has hardly had an issue with its fleet of Mercedes-Benz buses, as they have proven to be durable and reliable over time. McKenzie’s says there is a deliberate strategy to have one of the youngest fleet age averages in Australia as a way of ensuring customers have access to the latest technology and high comfort levels. Mercedes-Benz’s buses are helping McKenzie’s fulfil this goal.
“We offer our customers a premium service and a modern fleet,” Sanders says. “This reduces the chance of breakdowns as well as delivering all the benefits that come from the latest and greatest technology and quality.”
supported by Mercedes-Benz.
“Any niggles can be quickly sorted out because we get such good support from Mercedes-Benz and also Irizar,” Sanders says. “The Mercedes-Benz support team will come on site and spend time with us and are quick to respond to any requests for assistance, while the Irizar support is just terrific too.”
McKenzie’s operates regular school runs and a large level of charter services including weddings. Sanders says business is currently booming. With a history stretching back to 1927, the operator has continued to succeed in the Victorian public transport sector. With the latest technology from Mercedes-Benz and Daimler Truck, McKenzie’s success isn’t set to quieten anytime soon.
“It has been flat-stick for some time,” Sanders says. “We are very busy looking after our regular customers.”

JUGGLING NEW ENERGY OPTIONS
Foton Mobility has had a busy year spent releasing its two new
CHASSIS & BODIES FOTON MOBILITY
Abel says Foton Mobility has also put a lot of work into the warranty and after-sale side of the model.
“The warranty for the hydrogen city bus is very impressive,” he says.
“The complete vehicle warranty is a 60-month or 400,000 kilometre offer, whatever comes first. The fuel cell battery has an eight-year warranty, while the fuel cell itself has a five-year or 400,000 kilometre warranty for customers.
“For our hydrogen model in particular, receiving ADR approval for it is a major accomplishment for Foton.”
Yet the zero-emission bus distributor isn’t just limiting its green energy models to the hydrogen fuelcell side of the equation. Following the introduction of the FTH12 hydrogen city bus, Foton Mobility also released a low-floor battery electric city bus as part of its product catalogue.
Abel says the battery electric bus model has similar specifications to the FTH12 hydrogen bus.
Both models have the same seating and standing capacity, as well as CATL batteries and ZF running gear. However, instead of having a Toyota fuel cell onboard, the electric option
Abel says the company estimates that the bus’s range sits around the 300km mark, while its seating and airconditioning products are agnostic. This allows Foton Mobility to provide models for operators within the customer’s specifications.
Its warranty includes a 60 month or 400,000km option for the complete vehicle, including the drive motor. With the new models providing plenty of excitement for Foton heading into 2023, Abel says the company will be promoting both models equally in the market.
“We’ll be ensuring that we push
both into the market immediately,” Abel says. “I believe there is a place in the market for both hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric buses.
“A lot of it will come down to the environment that operators work in and the location. We’ll push both very hard to ensure we provide the best fit for operators around Australia.”

Left: The FTH12 hydrogen city bus is making waves in Australia
Foton Mobility stresses it won’t be limiting its fleet to just the two bus models for the immediate future. Abel is already teasing some exciting news for 2023 and beyond.
“Coming next year will be some different products that we’ve been looking at,” Abel told ABC. “Our current two models look similar and perform and ride impressively, so we may be adding more buses to those markets and heavily campaigning both.”
Abel says the Australian zeroemissions bus and coach distributor is looking to establish its existing vehicles in 2023.
After a crazy period spent releasing and promoting the two new energy options, Abel wants to
see the buses find their niche in the local market. Having received the two vehicles’ ADR approval, Abel says he is finding it hard to curb his excitement for 2023.
“I see some wonderful developments in the hydrogen industry next year and I’m excited to see where it will take us,” Abel says. “As far as products from Foton Mobility go, it will be a case of watch this space for 2023.
“I can guarantee we’re certainly not going to rest with just our current vehicles. We’ll be looking at opportunities where we can grow our footprint – we believe we know where these opportunities lie and where we can maximise our value offering.”

PACKING A PUNCH
It’s been five years since the Hino Poncho first hit the industry.
“When it was introduced, we knew the Poncho bus would appeal to flexible transport applications such as community transport, aged care, disability and special needs providers,” manager of Hino Bus Sara Clark told ABC.
Growth in technology-driven flexible transport and on-demand services has been rapid, especially in New South Wales.
“The Poncho is the perfect mobility solution for bus operators providing on-demand services with easy access for all passengers,” Clark says. “Wheelchair boarding can take less than one minute compared to a traditional small bus.”
Hino national sales manager Kevin Fielding says the Poncho has been around in Japan since 2002.
“We pushed for a demonstration model to gauge the reactions to it,” Fielding told ABC back in 2019. “From the start the feedback has always been really positive, so the next step was to bring them to the Australian market.”
Clark says the Poncho is a popular choice for on-demand operators who are attracted to its versatility in delivering
requiring all Australian public transport networks and associated infrastructure to be fully accessible by mid-2023.
Clark says innovative kerb-kneeling technology, a flip out wheelchair ramp and dedicated wheelchair space inside provides level entry for all passengers.
“Operators appreciate our ability to work with them to provide mobility solutions that best suit the requirements of their fleet while the Poncho’s safety, passenger comfort and accessibility appeal to patrons who use flexible transport services,” Clark says.
Hino has also prioritised safety with the Poncho’s large 850mm sliding door, featuring sensitive touch technology and sensors near the entrance stopping the door from closing if there’s an obstruction.
The door is also prevented from opening until the bus is in neutral and has come to a complete stop. From there, drive and reverse can only be selected again once the door is fully closed.
With a turning circle of less than eight metres, the 18 seat plus driver vehicle measures under seven metres in

ELECTRIC INNOVATIONS
With the most electric buses on the road in Australia, Nexport continues to focus on safety, investing in technology and developing worldclass innovation for zero-emissions transportation
Following a successful first generation of zero-emissions buses that have hit Australian roads, Nexport is taking it to the next level. The bus and coach brand now has a range of four electric buses that have been updated to include the latest safety technology and innovative battery designs.
At the forefront of Nexport’s new generation offerings is its 7.5m smaller option. The completely new range in Nexport’s second iterations of electric buses allows the 7.5m version to be run for multiple applications.
“Our 7.5m bus is suited to pubs, clubs, hotels, motels, mining applications and inner-city driving,” Nexport sales director Steve Fisher told ABC. “It has a much smaller environmental footprint and is doing very well for smaller, ondemand transit services.
“It’s designed to help cover the last mile into the city transport.”
Fisher says that currently major Australian cities are seeing people not able to hop on buses due to them being full. He says the Nexport 7.5m second generation bus is ideal for this challenge, as it can be used as an ondemand service to alleviate the overcrowded issue. With a range of up to 300 kilometres when travelling at 100 kilometres per hour and 22 seats plus the driver, the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant bus even has wheelchair access. The charge time for the unique model is only one to two hours.
“All buses we provide are DDA compliant across Australia, including wheelchair access,” Fisher says.
Following the 7.5m are three other models
that have been revamped as part of the Nexport second generation zero-emissions buses. As part of the brand’s latest innovations, Nexport has moved its batteries from the roof of the bus and instead incorporated them into the chassis. Fisher says this has major benefits, both from a safety and an aesthetic perspective.
“We see the chassis as a much better place to locate the batteries,” Fisher says. “It gives us the chance to have additional features like solar panels on the roof that help with powering air-conditioning without taking away from the battery required to power the bus.”
These changes come as standard across the range. Alongside the flagship 12.5m standard city bus is a 10.6m and an 8.6m long bus that cater for varying applications and size requirements. With Australia being such a wide, open land, Fisher says these other sized buses come in handy for situations where the standard 12.5m city bus isn’t the right option for an application.
Fisher says Nexport currently has the most electric buses on the road in Australia out of any supplier in the market. This starts with the 12.5m version one range. The second generation of the bus now uses LFP battery chemistry (lithium iron phosphate), which Fisher says is the safest battery technology on the market for bus operations. Due to its thermal stability during all operating conditions and its long energy release, Fisher says the batteries have a much slower cell degradation of battery life compared to other models. This becomes important when

customer buy assets that are designed to last a long time.
The 12.5m model has the same specifications as the 10.6m and 8.6 options outside of seating capacity, range and battery. The 12.5m can travel for up to 600 kilometres on a single charge, with three types of batteries that can vary the range of the model. The 10.6m and 8.6m versions have a range of up to 350 kilometres, providing a variety of ideal products for operators.
Fisher says this technology, which includes a suite of incredible safety features as standard, is unparalleled in the Australian bus market.
“Our buses also include the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite of safety features as standard in all of our new models,” Fisher says. “In the past, everyone has had the ability to include this as an option, yet we’re now including it as standard in all of our products.
“Safety is a key priority and we’ll derisk our technology by providing this as standard.”

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2023
For Nexport, 2023 will give the brand a chance to continue promoting its new range of buses. It’ll also look to expand its portfolio in both the business to business and business to government markets. It’s new second generation fleet aims to develop the right products for Nexport’s customers, ready for Australian roads.
“It’s really exciting because we’re doing things that no one else is doing yet in the market,” Fisher told ABC. “A lot of people in the industry think this technology is still new and worry about the testing phase. We’re here to prove this is now no longer a risk.”
Fisher says Nexport is a zeroemissions bus brand. This means it isn’t just limiting its horizons to battery electric models. Currently the company may be focusing on electric vehicles, but Fisher says hydrogen fuel cell technology is definitely front and centre in Nexport’s thinking.
“Right now, when looking at approaches to city and metro applications, electric is the best option,” Fisher says. “When we have the opportunity to look at rural, country and long distance needs, then we will of course also look at hydrogen models.”

SCANIA OFFERS MULTIPLE FUEL SOLUTIONS FOR CLEANER BUSES
Scania Australia is heavily invested in diversifying its lowemission fuel options for the bus and coach market, ranging from battery electric chassis to the potential for biodiesel
IMAGES SCANIA AUSTRALIA
In 2022, Scania Australia introduced an all-new chassis generation underpinning the entirety of its bus offer in the Australian market.
The Scania New Bus Generation introduces new driver, passenger and road user safety enhancing technology, a completely redesigned driver station, and worthwhile efficiency updates across the powertrain range, including a new top of the range 500 hp six-cylinder diesel engine. The Scania bus and coach line-up includes mineral diesel and biodiesel compatible internal combustion engines, as well as electric-hybrid and full electric drivetrains.
Scania is pushing forward in its aim to help the transformation to a sustainable transport system for operators, offering
a partial or complete reduction of tailpipe emissions. Buses generally operate in areas of high population density, so switching to zero tailpipe emissions is seen as delivering the greatest benefit in the shortest time.
“We have brought to life the Scania mantra of the past five years of ‘driving the shift to a sustainable transport system’ with some real-world, ready-to-work technologies that bus operators across Australia can now adopt as part of their pathway towards a low or zero tailpipe emissions future,” Scania Buses and Power Solutions director of sales Julian Gurney told ABC. “Our first Scania BEV bus chassis are in the process of being bodied up for route bus duties by BusTech Group in Adelaide for the state’s Department of Infrastructure and Transport.”
ABC 2023 BUS SEARCH BUYERS’ GUIDE 70 busnews.com.au
The Scania route bus offer comprises the K 320 LB low floor route bus chassis in both diesel and hybrid. The school and charter range starts with the K 320 NB followed by the K 360 and the new 13-litre six-cylinder K 370, all available with the updated Scania Opticriuse or ZF 6 speed automatic. The Scania Touring is available on the K 360 NB and K 370 NB chassis.
Also available is the updated Scania-Higer A30 school and charter coach, which sits on the NBG chassis and is powered by the K 320 powertrain. In long-distance touring coach in two and three axle configurations, Scania offers

its six-cylinder engines at 410, 460 and 500hp, the latter a new addition to the range.
Gurney says all of Scania’s bus engines can run on B100 biodiesel or HVO biofuel direct from the factory, which can reduce emissions of carbon dioxide to around seven or eight per cent of that of a traditional mineral diesel-fuelled engine. These can provide very significant, real-world savings without the complex and expensive infrastructure battery electric buses demand in terms of charging facilities and higher-priced battery electric powertrains.
Biodiesel is readily available in Australia now and Scania has signed memoranda of understanding with a number of suppliers who stand ready to fulfil the requirements of bus operators countrywide. For HVO, Scania is also planning to ensure sufficient quantities of this fuel can be provided when needed.
For electric-hybrid route bus solutions, Scania

generation full battery electric bus chassis begin receiving bodies, Gurney says his team will be excited to begin the testing phase in South Australia. Alongside this testing stage, to determine suitability for route work in Adelaide, Scania is keen to continue investing in biodiesel for other bus models.
“For a significant reduction in tailpipe emissions, biodiesel is an obvious and real-world ready choice,” Gurney told ABC. “Our electric-hybrid solution also makes sense because there is little or no additional infrastructure required for realworld running.”
battery electric bus chassis, in isolation, is capable of showing what a zero emissions future will look like today,” Gurney says.
“But this technology needs to exist as part of an eco-system, one that must be devised, implemented and funded by governments, energy suppliers, public transport bodies and private bus operators, in order to gain the benefit from running on wholly green energy.
“The Scania message is that we have a range of solutions available; let us know what you want.”
offers the K 320 five-cylinder engine mated to an electric machine that provides motive power of up to 12km solely on batteries in silent mode. The bus can approach and depart stops silently with no tailpipe emissions.
A number of Scania’s latest generation full battery electric bus chassis are already in the country and the first will be bodied before the end of 2022 and will be put into a test programme in South Australia to confirm their suitability for route work where zero tailpipe emissions are desired.
“We understand there’s a strong desire at a political level to switch to a zero tailpipe or zero emissions bus era, but the reality is this will take time, across all levels of planning and implementation,” Gurney says. “That’s why we continue to market and import a series of alternative and renewable fuel solutions that are suitable for the Australian market today.”

UNDERGOING A HEAVY TRANSITION
Yutong is in the midst of upgrading many of its existing range of bus options. 2023 will be no different as the brand has eyes on a greener future range for Australian customers.
IMAGES YUTONG
Awhirlwind 2022 for Yutong means the sole Australian distributor of Yutong buses in Australia, VDI Australia, has been kept busy. Alongside its well-known range of diesel options, Yutong has also introduced various zero-emissions options as it follows the industry’s transition to greener buses.
This includes the E12 model, as well as the latest option in the C12E bus that was launched at 2022’s Bus & Coach Expo.
Combined with the latest version of the smaller D7 bus, Yutong is expanding its range to cater for variations in the Australian market.
“It’s been a very, very busy year for the Yutong team,” VDI Australia general manager Lou Riccardi told ABC. “Getting the new D7 coming to light this year and the new C12E, as well as upgrades to the E12, has made
for a lot of exciting work.”
The C12E now takes pride of place in Yutong’s zero-emissions fleet.
The new 57-seat school bus come mining shuttle come charter product is leading the future plans for Yutong Australia’s catalogue.
After being launched in late 2022, the electric vehicle is primed for a massive 2023 in the local market.
Evolution in Yutong’s technology means the C12E is filled with the best safety systems that the brand can offer.
Riccardi says the C12E combines 22 years of Yutong knowledge and experience in building electric buses. He says the C12E comes with the same evolution of safety systems that the E12 model has, including the unique Yutong S safety system.
“The safety features on the C12E include Yutong’s unique crash protection and fire mitigation systems

that we will put on all of our buses,” Riccardi says.
“All of our learnings in the electric bus space have been implemented – we believe the C12E, alongside the E12, are very safe and reliable vehicles.”
Riccardi says the same two decades of electric bus experience and knowledge has come to the fore with Yutong’s other electric model in the E12.
These unique safety systems may be hidden from the customer and operator’s view, but Riccardi says these solutions are helping give Yutong’s electric products a point of difference in the market.
Alongside their range and performance capabilities, Riccardi says the E12 and C12E are class acts.
Pivoting away from VDI’s latest electric models and the newer version of the D7 has also been a gamechanger for Yutong Australia.
Alongside the existing D9 and D12 models, Riccardi says the D7 has taken on a different market space.
By being a smaller sized vehicle, Riccardi is expecting the D7 to take over the D9 and D12 models as the premier diesel model in the brand’s range.
“The current D9 and D12 buses are now great vehicles that are coming to the end of their lives,” Riccardi says. “They are good value for money, are reliable and are well put together. Yet now our D7 will take on the market.”
Moving into 2023, Riccardi expects the year to be just as busy as 2022 was for Yutong and VDI Australia.
Following the successful launch of the C12E, Riccardi and his team will continue promoting the new electric product.
The brand has high ambitions to completely electrify its product range in the next few years, with the Euro 6 transition being the first step for many. It shows a clear ambition for Yutong to lead the trend in the bus and coach industry towards a zero-emissions future.
“Our aim is to have our whole range be at

least Euro 6 in emissions in the future,” Riccardi says. “Eventually we also want to have it all available in electric models. This ranges from our current D7, D9 and D12 vehicles, all the way through to our C12E and our E12 low floor city bus.”
As part of Yutong Australia’s low-emissions transition, 2023 will be filled with new updates and models. Riccardi says VDI Australia has started already with a new Euro 6 version of the C12 range. The release of the C12 Euro 6 model is planned for early next year.
Alongside the C12 release is the upcoming electric model of the smaller D7 bus.
“Both the new electric version of the D7 and the C12 Euro 6 range will be an exciting way to start 2023,” Riccardi told ABC. “They’re the future products for the company and we’re planning around them as we move forward.”
Following these releases, VDI Australia is also set to unveil a new Euro 6 range that includes both 12m and 10m bus options for the local market. These will vary between a 57 and 43-seat capacity to continue providing the versatility that Yutong prides itself on.
Riccardi says this line-up of future models alludes to an exciting time for Yutong and VDI Australia as it pushes towards zeroemissions.
all of these plans, we are still providing the same that we always do,” Riccardi says. “This means we will be providing a quality product that is reliable, performs well and has the aftersales

CELEBRATING TWIN RELEASES
2022 saw Coachair celebrate its return to the Bus & Coach Expo with the release of two air-conditioning units. The new models have laid a platform for a successful 2023 for the manufacturer.

With new models and a massive Bus & Coach Expo, it’s been an incredibly busy year for Coachair.
The air-conditioning manufacturer has released flagship models across both the diesel and battery-electric airconditioning sectors, both of which were on full display at October’s Bus & Coach Expo and will lead Coachair into a busy 2023.
Coachair general manager Anthony O’Donnell says the EX32 unit is at the forefront of Coachair’s modern offerings to the bus and coach market.
“On the electric side we are promoting our prized EX32 unit,” O’Donnell told ABC.
“The EX32 is the lightest weight unit on offer in Australia for zero-emissions buses.
“It also has the highest capacity heating and cooling. Under testing in the lab and data logging on road, it has shown to use significantly less power than other units on offer in the market today.”
O’Donnell says the EX32 is the only unit
on the market that has been specified by Australian engineers for the Australian climate.
Coming from more than 40 years of manufacturing electric air-conditioning units for the rail sector, O’Donnell says the EX32 takes the best of its rail offerings and transitions it to the bus and coach market.
Having been 100 per cent Australian owned and marketed, Coachair’s EX32 has been designed specifically by the company’s electric engineers for zeroemissions buses.
“It’s a pure DC unit, we don’t run converters to AC to keep power consumption at a minimum,” O’Donnell says. “We’re also running two separate refrigeration systems with DC compressors.
“It gives us the ability to have 50 per cent redundancy, so if we do have one system fail then the unit can still keep the bus on the road.”
Yet Coachair’s air-conditioning units aren’t just limited to its latest venture into zero-emissions, lightweight options.
On the diesel side, Coachair also

released a new model in 2022, the XT44.
“On the diesel side, the XT44 is the replacement for the original XT353 model,” O’Donnell says.
“The reasoning behind replacing the XT353 model was to upgrade to a higher capacity unit with more air flow and a much lighter weight.”
O’Donnell says the upgrade from the XT353 to the XT44 is a clear evolution for Coachair.
While the control systems on both models are identical, the models differ when it comes to the latest technology.
O’Donnell says the XT44 would be close to the highest capacity diesel air-conditioning unit in the Australian market.
Supporting the two main Coachair models is a quickly expanding nationwide warranty that the company has been working hard to develop in 2022.
With the likes of business development manager Eddie Furmanczyk returning to the Coachair fold in time for the Expo, Coachair is now primed to promote its after-sale capabilities too.
“Both the EX32 and the XT44 models are now backed by our nationwide warranty and service divisions,” O’Donnell says. “We have nationwide service and warranty back-up for customers, regardless of where in Australia they are or at what time.
“Our service and warranty capabilities are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
This twin release of models in both the diesel and electric air-conditioning markets has made 2022 a whirlwind for O’Donnell and Coachair.
Moving into 2023, O’Donnell says the company is busy servicing the local industry and pushing its new models further into the market.
“As we look towards 2023, we have a fairly solid order bank ready to go,” O’Donnell says.
“We also have a lot of non-Coachair customers who are looking at our products because of what it is and what we’re doing in the marketplace.”

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2023
Off the back of the launch of the EX32 and the XT44 and their promotion at the Bus & Coach Expo, Coachair’s focus in 2023 will be on growing its presence in the market.
“In general, 2023 will be an exciting year for Coachair,” O’Donnell told ABC. “We’ll continue promoting our units and building our service divisions to support the product we’re selling.”
O’Donnell says Coachair will continue to draw on its near 50-year link to the rail industry as it works to evolve its electric powered airconditioning platform.
He says Coachair is also looking at a new technology when it comes to refrigerant coils to ensure its products have a lower impact on the environment while continuing to have great capacity for the weight of the unit.
While there is certainly a focus on developing in the electric power space, Coachair will not be disregarding its diesel units and technology.
“Diesel buses aren’t going to go away for at least 15 to 20 years in regional and rural areas,” O’Donnell says.
“We will still keep evolving our diesel equipment as well as our electric to provide quality products for as long as our customer base requires it.”

At the Bus Industry Confederation’s (BIC) 2022 National Conference in November, delegates discussed the issues facing the industry in 2023 and beyond.
As 2022 rolls to an end and the bus industry looks towards the year ahead, there are a number of key areas that are sure to garner plenty of attention among operators.
The Bus Industry Confederation (BIC) Annual Conference held in Brisbane in November 2022 surfaced numerous opportunities and challenges for the year ahead, including the hope of closing the gap on patronage numbers and moving from the current state of 80 per cent pre-COVID figures up to 100 per cent in 2023 and beyond.
At the conference, futurist Michael McQueen listed a number of key elements to look for in the coming years, including the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the evolution of hybrid working and the needs of the next generation of bus
users in Generation Z.
McQueen spoke of a world where unmanned air taxis and trams are already being trialled, where staff may never go back to the office full time, and a next generation of consumers who are focused on sustainability and environmental protection as a major driver of their actions.
He said operators would need to find a way of connecting with Gen Z users, convincing them of their green credentials and inspiring them to start using buses for their transport needs.
Figuring out the ebbs and peaks of a new working world, particularly for city-based transport groups will be another challenge – with data collection and potentially differential pricing a way of boosting numbers of quieter days and encouraging usage all week.
On the topic of AI, it became clear that the technology has enormous potential to help businesses across a wide range of activities, not just in the transporting of people, but also in recruitment and administrative tasks.
On the people side of the industry, 2023 will be about finding ways to attract more drivers and being able to assure new and existing drivers that their safety and wellbeing is of paramount concern to employers and governments.
Changes to federal industrial relations laws being debated at the end of 2022 will likely play out in 2023.
In essence, what’s been proposed by the new federal government is a set of

unions to seek multi-company enterprise bargaining within an industry and the ability to seek Fair Work Commission assistance in both the process and in arbitrating a decision in cases where negotiations cannot be agreed.
National Conference was to talk to your advisors and understand where you are at in the enterprise bargaining cycle, and what potential impact these changes could have for your business.
A common catchphrase from this year’s conference, from operators and manufacturers alike, was that building and buying electric buses was the ‘easy’ part of the push towards a zero-emissions future.
A lot of attention was paid to the challenges of charging and maintaining the new fleets of zero-emissions buses. This would require strong investment in electrical infrastructure to be able to handle the charging loads – and training to ensure there were enough mechanics available to service the new styles of engines.
There are also issues of extra weight and width of buses and the impact this could have on the road network and in working within the current national heavy vehicle regulations. This is one of the many issues that will need to be worked through in the
Another issue to watch in 2023 will be around the requirements of accessible public transport. There is debate around whether low ride buses are practical on regional roads, and what alternatives may be available to ensure anyone who needs to catch a bus,
One area that may assist in this process is the increasing development of on-demand transport services where operators are working closer with passengers to provide door to door service, when needed, rather than by regular scheduling.
Conference delegates heard about the complexities of this system and trials in progress that are attempting to develop the best models for funding and managing the fleet and staff requirements of the programs.
On the regulation front, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) Ray Hassall and National Transport Commission’s (NTC) Aaron de Rozario both spoke of a desire for their organisations to continue to work with transport operators to simplify processes and red tape and to develop regulations that serve the purpose of keeping everyone safe without creating an overload of administration for business.
This will be a work in progress for 2023. As an example, changes to the Performance Based Standards (PBS) scheme announced at the conference are offering operators of relevant vehicles a greater scope to source approved tyres for their vehicles from December 2022. This all makes for an exciting and, once again, challenging 023 for the Australasian bus and coach
