IT’S EXPO TIME

There’s excitement in the air as the National Bus & Coach Show dates get closer

When this edition of Australasian Bus & Coach magazine hits the streets on August 21 the countdown will have started in earnest for the National Bus & Coach Show 2024.

Held over two days (September 17 and 18) at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre this year’s show is shaping up to be a celebration of all things bus — from seating to airconditioning, safety systems, alternative power, telematics and the very latest in chassis design.

ABC magazine is proud to have partnered with the Bus Industry Confederation (BIC) to help to promote the event to our readers.

Aside from being there on the ground during the event, we have spent the last couple of months preparing this edition as the perfect go-to guide for your viewing.

In this month’s edition we provide a guide to the Expo itself, including a map of the show floor, a list of exhibitors and where to find them, a list of sponsors, and some words of welcome from the organising committee. See page 43. We have even made the guide-smack in the middle for you to pull out if needed.

We also have some exclusive news about what readers can expect to see unveiled at the show from the nation’s leading bus manufacturers and industry suppliers, and plenty of information about what guests can expect to find on each of the sites our regular advertising partners will be hosting via our Show Stoppers section starting on page 51.

For our cover story (starting on page 18) the team at Yutong and their Australian distributor VDI have shared their thoughts on the concept of Demand Responsive Transport and stated their intention to have one of the

first Yutong E7 buses off the factory line available at this year’s show for guests to experience up close and personal.

Go Zero Group, and its Australian arm Nexport, continue to push toward a low carbon future and will be bringing the Nextport NextGen electric bus to Brisbane to showcase just how far things have come since they introduced the first electric buses to Sydney airport back in 2017 (page 38).

Away from the Expo excitement, this issue has all the industry news you need, including a chat with Phil Langley about why his business Langley’s Coaches decided to expand its footprint and go back to the future with its purchase of Australia Wide Coaches.

From fire suppression systems (page 34) to the latest in door control technology (page 32), safety remains a hot topic for the industry.

Our regular features are there too, with a stunning shot taking out this month’s Best Bus photo competition, a full list of the deliveries made in July 2024, and a sit down with Lonestar Coachlines’ boss Les Bultitude for our Back Seat section as he reflects on more than three decades in the bus world.

I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine and that if you see any of the ABC team in Brisbane next month, you’ll come up and say hello.

New buses coming for QLD

The Brisbane bus network will see 50 new buses hitting the road in response to the arrival of 50 cent fares

Premier Steven Miles and Transport Minister Bart Mellish have announced that 50 of 200 Queensland-made buses being delivered to the State have been constructed, with 37 set to be deployed to boost capacity on the Brisbane bus network in anticipation of increased demand expected to be created by the 50 cent fares trial that began in August.

The remaining buses will continue to support commuters during rail track closures, including major accessibility upgrades underway at five South East Queensland train stations.

Translink’s bus delivery partners will provide an additional 13 buses for the 50-cent trial period, taking the total to 50 additional buses for the city.

Brisbane City Council will receive 18 of the buses, with four each provided to Caboolture Bus Lines, Clarks and Transdev, three to Thompsons, two to Hornibrook Bus Lines and one each to Park Ridge Transit and Westside Bus Company.

“We know people are excited for the 50 cent fares trial and we want to ensure a seamless experience for both new and existing public transport users,” transport minister Bart Mellish says.

“There is still capacity on many bus services but these locally manufactured rail replacement buses will ensure additional services provide even greater service for our customers.”

Electric CAT bus to hit Perth

The Queensland-made buses to be used during the 50 cent fares trial are Euro 6 diesel buses on a Volvo chassis and have been built by local workers at Volgren’s Eagle Farm manufacturing facility.

As part of the WA government’s Electric Bus Program, the initiative will see the delivery of 130 new electric buses, the installation of charging infrastructure at key depots and major upgrades to

first bus station in WA capable of supporting electric buses.

The delivery of a new fleet of electric buses comes after a trial of four electric buses began in the Joondalup area in February last year.

Above: 130 electric buses will eventually be hitting WA roads. Image: WA government

Successful results in the first year of the trial saw the electric buses carry more than 250,000 passengers over 140,000 kilometres, saving about 230 tonnes of carbon dioxide in the process.

The new Yutong E7S is set to provide the perfect option for metropolitan operators

IMAGES VDI AUSTRALIA

As urban populations grow and expand, cities face increasing challenges in providing efficient, clean, and accessible transportation options.

For the likes of Yutong and its Australian distributor VDI, finding solutions for these challenges has always been at the top of its list.

The Yutong E7S, which will be unveiled for the first time to the Australian public at the Bus and Coach Show on VDI Australia’s stand (L09), is a revolutionary electric bus designed to meet these demands through advanced technology and a focus on

Demand Responsive Transport (DRT).

“Urban areas are experiencing a surge in population density and sprawling developments, pushing residents further from city centres,” VDI national marketing manager Blake Duerden told ABC.

“This creates a pressing need for effective public transit solutions that connect commuters with main transport hubs.”

Traditional fixed-route systems often struggle to accommodate these needs, particularly in low-density areas where ridership is sparse, leading to inefficient services

and increased reliance on private vehicles. This situation exacerbates urban congestion and pollution, underscoring the necessity for innovative solutions.

DRT, a flexible public transport model, offers a promising answer by providing on-demand services that adapt to passengers’ schedules and locations. This model is particularly effective in addressing “first-mile” and “last-mile” issues, bridging the gap between commuters’ homes and major transit lines.

With the advent of user-friendly apps, DRT systems can efficiently

Above: The Yutong E7S will be unveiled for the first time at the Brisbane Bus and Coach Show

coordinate pickups and drop-offs, reducing the need for private car usage and enhancing the overall public transit experience.

“The Yutong E7S is engineered to excel in DRT environments. Its compact size and manoeuvrability make it ideal for navigating narrow urban streets and crowded areas,” Duerden says.

“Despite its smaller footprint, the E7S can comfortably accommodate up to 23 passengers, offering a practical solution for urban operators who need to balance capacity and flexibility. And with its DDA compliance, the E7S makes urban transport more accessible to all.”

At the core of the E7S is Yutong’s cutting-edge electric technology. The Yutong Electric Architecture (YEA) integrates sophisticated hardware and software systems, optimising performance and efficiency. Coupled with the Yutong Energy Storage System (YESS), the E7S

The Yutong E7S marks a significant step forward in the evolution of public transportation”

achieves a practical range of up to 180 kilometres on a single charge, making it a sustainable choice for daily operations.

While the E7S is designed to excel in providing Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) services for first and last-mile connectivity, its bigger sibling, the low-floor E12, serves as a reliable workhorse for more traditional route-based services.

“The 12-metre E12 bus, a staple in urban commuting, is known for its performance, efficiency, environmental benefits, and safety features. With Yutong’s strong focus on reducing emissions and operational costs, the E12 is a critical component of VDI’s Zero-Emission Bus (ZEB) range,” Duerden says.

Transit Systems executive general manager of e-mobility and fleet innovation Mark Peters says the E12 has exceeded all of his expectations.

“Our zero-emission transition journey with the Yutong E12 Battery Electric Buses began with a single vehicle deployment in 2019,” Peters says.

“From the outset, we were impressed by its reliability and

range. Today, with a fleet of 20 E12 buses, we provide a smooth, quiet, and comfortable ride for our drivers and customers.

“The transition has been seamless, with excellent support from both VDI and Yutong.”

Peters says the economic and environmental advantages of the E12 are noteworthy, with significant cost savings due to lower operating and maintenance expenses compared to traditional diesel buses. So it comes as little surprise that the E12 will be proudly displayed on VDI’s stand, right next to the E7S.

“We are proud to be at the forefront of sustainable transportation, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Yutong as we strive for a greener future,” Peters says.

The E7S is set to complete VDI’s ZEB lineup, offering operators a battery electric bus for all passenger capacity needs. With the battery performance from CATL seeing ever increasing range possibilities (the E12 is capable of up to 462 kilometres on a full charge), this greener, quieter bus experience could become the norm in metros. Like the other ZEB buses from

Below: The Yutong E7S is engineered to excel in DRT environments

Yutong, the E7S is equipped with an intelligent transportation system that allows operators to monitor various aspects of the vehicle’s performance in real time.

This system includes features like electronic stability control and tyre pressure monitoring, which enhance safety and reliability. For operators, this telematic data is vital to ensuring their buses are kept running with minimal downtime.

“The introduction of the Yutong E7S marks a significant step forward in the evolution of public transportation. By combining the advantages of electric propulsion with the flexibility of DRT, the E7S offers a compelling solution to the challenges faced by modern cities,” Duerden says.

“As municipalities and transit authorities worldwide seek to reduce carbon emissions and improve urban mobility, vehicles like the Yutong E7S are poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of public transit.

“For cities like Brisbane where this year’s show is being held, which are increasingly prioritising sustainable transport solutions, the Yutong E7S represents not just a new bus model but a blueprint for the future of urban mobility. By investing in electric, demand-responsive transit solutions, cities can enhance accessibility, reduce congestion, and contribute to a cleaner, greener urban environment.”

Yutong is actively driving a global shift towards sustainable transportation. Their campaign,

“Think Eco, Move Green,” represents more than just a slogan; it’s a bold declaration of Yutong’s dedication to a greener future. This campaign underscores Yutong’s commitment to pioneering eco-friendly technology and setting new standards in the industry.

In a testament to this commitment, Yutong will be making a significant statement at the Brisbane Bus and Coach Show, with representatives from Yutong’s global headquarters making the journey to underscore the company’s dedication to the Australian market and its broader vision.

The highlight of Yutong’s presence will be their own gala event at Brisbane Town Hall. This exclusive event will not only showcase the latest advancements in zero-emission technology but also articulate Yutong’s roadmap for the future of public transportation.

With industry leaders, media, and officials in attendance, the gala is set to be a pivotal moment, illustrating how Yutong’s partnership with Australia can shape the nation’s transportation landscape. It’s a revolutionary move, highlighting Yutong’s proactive approach to fostering sustainable urban mobility and setting a precedent for the industry worldwide.

“It was a devastating loss for many people and for the industry.”

Looking to the future, the Langley family knew they could make an impact on the AWC brand and started looking into the possibility of owning the brand once again.

“We are very pleased to be able to announce the acquisition of Australia Wide Coaches and are proud to be able to continue on the legacy of Richard Dawes, who we know was a very highly respected member of the Bus and Coach industry.”

“We have bought a few other businesses over the years, but this one particularly means a lot to us.

Lifting the bar

RUD Australia is taking the next step and expanding their range into the wireless mobile heavy vehicle hoist industry

WORDS TIARNA CONDREN IMAGES RUD AUSTRALIA

With the history of RUD Group dating back to 1875, and its Australian subsidiary RUD Chains recently celebrating its 40th birthday, it’s clear the manufacturer has had time to perfect its craft and expertise.

A highly respected and well-known name in the chain technology and lifting industry, RUD now offers multiple options for automotive

workshops to keep their operations running smoothly and efficiently.

RUD Australia managing director Peter Nuttall told ABC that the first step of this newest venture was to find the perfect partner.

“We are pleased to announce that RUD Australia is the exclusive supplier of German-based mobile heavy vehicle hoists brand, Finkbeiner, effective from the first of August,” Nuttall says.

Established in 1927, Finkbeiner is known worldwide for its engineering heritage with hydraulic mobile column lifts.

“Finkbeiner pioneered the hydraulic mobile column hoist in 1967, revolutionising workshop flexibility,” Nuttall says.

“Every Finkbeiner hoist undergoes rigorous testing in Germany from the manufacturing stage to quality control, ensuring exceptional performance and reliability.”

The hoists are quick to set up with fast lifting speeds and are virtually maintenance free with wireless communication offering better quality signals than Bluetooth. By combining sets of up to 20 hoists, there can be flexibility for different heavy vehicles in any workshop.

A new range of Finkbeiner accessories are also soon to be launched, solving a variety of lifting

requirements in the agriculture, military, portable dwelling units and rail industries.

The addition of Finkbeiner to the existing range of Endurequip hoists at RUD Chains provides ample options for both metro and regional workshops across Australia, with choices of high-quality cabled or wireless hoists.

“Endurequip has been manufactured in Australia for over 35 years and is the only Australian-made mobile heavy vehicle hoist,” Nuttall says.

“The Endurequip Portalift is reputed across Australia and overseas for quality, ease of maintenance and long-term reliability, running on a robust RUD chain drive system which lasts decades even with frequent use.”

Each Portalift hoist can be used in combination sets to lift a maximum of 60 tonnes. As a quality Australian product, manufactured with local steel in Brisbane, the Portalift is

reliable and robust for the most arduous applications including dusty mine sites and wash bays with an IP65 rating.

Along with the Endurequip Portalift hoist, RUD also offers an extensive range of automotive workshop accessories such as vehicle stands, ramps and adaptors.

With the addition of Finkbeiner to RUD Australia’s current service network, Nuttall says the company can now offer more benefits to the Australian market than ever before.

“Both Endurequip and Finkbeiner hoists are completely self-contained and mobile, allowing for convenient on-site repairs or flexibility inside workshops,” he says.

Adhering to the highest standards of performance, safety, and reliability, both hoists can handle a wide range of vehicles, from buses to military trucks, with lifting capacities ranging from 10 to 85 tonnes.

“We now have a range of high

quality and reliable options for our customers,” Nuttall says.

“RUD combines a history of 140+ years in lifting innovation, and we want to continue to innovate.”

Donric Group acquires Floods Motor Services

This is the second acquisition Donric Group has made in the past year

Passenger transport management company Donric Group have announced the acquisition of Bendigo-based Floods Motor Services as it continues growing its presence across the state.

Floods Motor Services has been providing bus services to the Bendigo community since the 1940s, with Donric Group wanting to maintain its relationship and standing within the community.

Announced via a Linkedin post, Donric Group wrote, “Thanks to the Flood family for entrusting us to carry on the Floods name.”

As part of the purchase, Floods former owner, John Flood and his son Jack will remain with the business going forward, with all drivers and maintenance staff also remaining with the business.

The Floods fleet of 15 vehicles will compliment the 13 Organ’s Coaches vehicles currently operating in and around the Bendigo region.

“We are very pleased to be able to share news of our recent growth in Bendigo,” Donric managing director

Matthew Baird says.

“Another reputable, long-standing family business joins the Donric family!”

The acquisition comes just 10 months after Donric successfully acquired Melbourne on the Move.

Auckland now home to Australasia’s largest all-electric bus depot facility

Kinetic is supporting the government’s mandate for the full decarbonisation of urban buses in New Zealand by 2035

Kinetic’s New Lynn bus depot in Auckland’s west has now become the largest all-electric bus depot facility in Australasia, following the arrival of 44 new zero-emission buses (ZEBs).

One of eight electric depots operated by Kinetic in New Zealand, the company has partnered with Auckland Transport and other councils to help power a bus transformation in the region.

At the centre of the transformation is the site at New Lynn, which now operates 86 electric buses and 44 charging stations—each capable of charging two buses simultaneously.

Kinetic NZ managing director Calum Haslop says it’s fantastic to see

the latest tranche of ZEBs delivered onto Auckland’s bus network, ahead of schedule.

“Auckland has been a leader in the decarbonisation of public transport and we’re proud of our role in this exciting transformation which is happening at scale,” Haslop says.

“When the ZEB roll-out is complete in Auckland, the 174 electric buses operated by Kinetic are estimated to displace more than 10,000 tonnes of C02 across the city every year – that’s something we can all be proud of.

“What’s more, the transformative scale of our zero emission operation across New Zealand provides intelligence on the benefits of a large

ZEB deployment, which can inform future roadmaps to net zero for councils across the country.”

Partnering for success

A successful partnership between E-T-A ElectroTechnical Applications and Novo Transport Systems has taken both of its products to a whole new level

TIARNA CONDREN IMAGES E-T-A / NOVO TRANSPORT SYSTEMS

For over five decades, the E-T-A registered mark has been recognised as a symbol of safety and reliability throughout the Australasian bus and coach industry. The German parts supplier has continued its stride into the local market, providing the right products to bus and coach manufacturers while also developing solutions for the future of transport.

While the company has been incredibly successful on its own, its recent partnership with Novo Transport Systems (Novo TS) has taken it to the next level.

Novo TS works with Australia’s market leaders in the bus and coach industry to deliver the latest safety technologies, including security (CCTV) equipment, bespoke safety modules, fatigue management and diagnostic tools.

Recently, they had been focusing on creating a door safety system that complies with New South Wales legislation.

“The system enables existing bus OEM door systems to be compliant with NSW Transport Roads and Maritime Services Technical Specification 160 (TS-160) bus door safety system requirements,” Novo

TS managing director Scott Kyle told ABC

Above: Novo TS’s Scott Kyle with the system

Below: The SCS1000 was selected for its features, reliability and space saving design

The NTS-160 system is a bolt-on solution that consists of a power distribution unit (PDU), voice module with built in speaker, door override/ warning light assembly and data logger with removable media.

Utilising the bus body OEM’s door signals and door entrapment sequence, it controls the chassis OEM supplied interlocks to meet the specific functionality requirements of TS-160.

Needing a programmable PDU with CAN-Bus control to use in their door safety systems, Kyle says E-T-A was a top choice.

“We had been working with another company originally, but after they underwent some internal changes, we realised we weren’t going to be compatible anymore,” he says.

“That’s when we get into contact with E-T-A, and it was the best decision we could have made.”

After consultation with the E-T-A team and testing, the SCS1000 was selected for its features, reliability and space saving design.

The SCS1000 module is an extremely compact power distribution system with integrated logic. The module offers a wealth of functions together with high performance in a very small package, ideal in terms of upgradeability for fleet modernisation, retrofits and projects where space saving is paramount.

“The system fits in the palm of your hand and has 12 inputs and 16 outputs. There are physical pins on the module where you would wire stuff into, and they also have a ton of soft inputs and outputs, which is where if you’re pairing it

up with other modules, it’s going to talk via CAN.” Other benefits Kyle says were the ease of integration of other components such as CAN Bus Loggers with the SCS1000.

E-T-A Australia assisted all the way with comprehensive local support to enable successful systems to be completed.

“The best thing about E-T-A products is that while previously you would have had to employ an electrical engineer, you can now rely on them to bridge the gap,” Kyle says.

“They have created a good software interface that allows us to design complex solutions in an intuitive way.”

The SCS1000 gave Novo TS full control over their projects, something which Kyle says they were incredibly grateful for.

“We now have 100 per cent control over our products and our projects, so we do all the in-house

logic and design for the application. That’s all us.If we need to make modifications, or change anything, we can do it ourselves. It just gives us total control.”

Since using E-T-A’s product, Novo

TS has experienced zero failures and are looking forward to continuing working with them in the future.

“We are big fans of E-T-A and its excellent product. I couldn’t imagine using anything else.”

When the unexpected occurs, such as a fire, many will look back and wonder how they could have better prepared for such an event.

For those in the business of transporting people every day, a fire suppressant system installed on buses is a must have. It is a product that provides peace of mind, and one that operators will certainly be hoping they never need to activate.

KlineFire is one of Australia’s most trusted fire protection manufacturers and suppliers, supporting Australian businesses with fire suppression equipment since 1964. For the last decade, KlineFire has been leading the way with Heavy Vehicle Fire Suppression systems that are not only state of the art but also environmentally friendly.

Varying greatly from other vehicle suppression systems (VSS), KlineFire’s is a Purple K dry chemical system. This has created a new niche in the market, where the product is environmentally friendly, non-corrosive and non-toxic.

Whilst the extinguishing component is an integral part of the KlineFire VSS system, equally as important is the ability of the supporting detectors to immediately detect a thermal event, with KlineFire offering a range of sensors and detection to suit all drivetrain types.

To ensure optimal performance, regulatory requirements specify maintenance checks and services must be completed regularly.

Historically, a KlineFire technician would travel to the bus operator and provide all necessary training in-person.

“We realised that this in-person

type of training was not the most beneficial for our customers,” KlineFire operations manager Joelene Sash told ABC

“Many of the bus operators are from regional Australia, and scheduling times that suit both our technicians and the operators was proving to be an issue. In response to feedback we were receiving, we decided to create an online portal that provides the training to the end-user virtually.”

The innovative website provides end-users with a unique login, where they’re able to go in and undergo training modules and tests and receive full accreditation to complete services.

“We’re the only operator that provides full training to do the six and 12 monthly and five yearly services,” KlineFire business development manager Allan McPhie told ABC

“This new portal further drives

Above: A Klinefire system set up in the engine bay

our commitment to equipping our customers with the best and most up-to-date knowledge needed for our systems.”

The new offering gives rise to plenty of benefits for bus and coach operators, with McPhie saying the KlineFire portal will provide a huge cost saving to the industry.

“Whether the operator has one single bus, or a couple hundred buses, they would have had to schedule times for their drivers and maintenance teams to receive the in-person training.”

“Technicians would have to travel all around Australia, and operators would have to schedule employees around a certain day and time. This portal takes out that entire hassle of pulling their staff off the road.”

Flexibility was a key factor driving the creation of the portal, with KlineFire dedicated to providing its customers with as much freedom as possible.

“This portal allows them to train their staff without having to organise anything, giving them that flexibility to be able to just log on when they have the time.”

While providing general service training, the portal also allows the operators and drivers to access information about the suppressant systems at any time. The in-depth training combined with the flexible delivery model provides each learner a relevant and interactive understanding of the KlineFire system, allowing the customer and their teams the immediate ability to service the systems, and trouble-shoot any faults without having to contact KlineFire. Needless to say the KlineFire team are always available to assist.

“We are very excited to offer this innovative new service to our customers and launch it at the Bus and Coach Expo in Brisbane,” Sash says.

Breaking new ground

It’s not often a new vehicle or technology arrives in Australia with the ability to evolve the way people move around major cities

IMAGES HESS/BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL

The lighTram® 25 is that vehicle. Spanning 24.5 metres long, it’s Australia’s longest electric vehicle; a new mode of transit between bus and rail. The lighTram 25 is a mid-tier transport solution offering operators high passenger capacity similar to a tram or light rail and the maneuverability and flexibility conventionally associated with an articulated bus.

Designed in Switzerland by experienced vehicle manufacturer HESS, the lighTram 25 will be unveiled at BIC’s National Bus and Coach Show. For those based in Brisbane, the vehicle will be a familiar sight. In 2022, Brisbane City Council commenced testing the lighTram 25 as its pilot vehicle for the turn-up-and-go Brisbane Metro project.

Council is due to commence Brisbane Metro passenger services later this year, with the fleet operating along dedicated busways as part of a better planned network for Brisbane commuters.

HESS regional manager Peter Dale says showcasing the vehicle at the National Bus and Coach Show in Brisbane is an opportunity for the entire bus industry to experience the sheer space and capacity, plus catch a glimpse of the vehicles travelling on the busways of Brisbane.

“The lighTram 25 is well beyond the testing phase. It’s a proven solution that’s ready to be rolled out in other major cities,” Dale told ABC

“More than 20 vehicles have been delivered to Brisbane City Council and the vehicles will be a familiar site with the metros completing reliability testing along Brisbane’s busways.

Above:

The lighTram 25 offers high passenger capacity similar to a tram or light rail

“Yes, the vehicles are new, but this is all happening now and it’s real.”

HESS CEO Alex Naef will officially launch the lighTram 25 during the BIC Bus and Show next month, saying although the vehicle may not look, feel and sound like a conventional bus, one of its greatest advantages is that it doesn’t necessitate drastic changes to bus operators.

“The lighTram 25 is a flexible, high-capacity, electric vehicle that can future-proof existing bus routes. An opportunity for bus operators to continue as bus operators, using a lot of their existing expertise and infrastructure,” Naef tells ABC

“We feel privileged to contribute to a public transport system that will lead the way in Australia. We always knew that lighTram 25 would offer something Australia hasn’t seen before: a vehicle capable of

quietly, efficiently and sustainably transporting large numbers of people without being reliant on rail infrastructure.”

The future of public transport

The timing of the lighTram 25 launch coincides with a newly discovered interest in Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems. In the last twelve months, the New South Wales and Victorian Governments have released reports on evolving their bus services, growing network demand and capacity with BRT a major plank, while the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads has announced the preferred vehicle option for the Sunshine Coast is BRT, over light rail.

Dale says the resurgence and genuine interest in BRT is an exciting time for HESS and a major opportunity for the entire industry.

“Governments are now openly discussing BRT as a flexible and cost-effective measure to increase capacity and move people quickly

“Buses can take a lead role in a city’s transport network and for good reason, BRT and bus travel is being seen as a step up, not a step down.”

He says the lighTram 25 could provide the centrepiece and required capacity to implement an efficient and effective BRT mass transit system.

“If you examine great examples of BRT like Bogata in South America, it needs to be simple for passengers, efficient and be based on a network of vehicle options feeding into an entire transport system.”

“Yes, you need more 12 metre and articulated buses but what the lighTram 25 provides is increased capacity to do the heavy lifting within a bus rapid solution. When you have capacity constraints the lighTram 25 can relieve it.”

HESS and Volgren extend their long running partnership

To bolster the Australian launch of the lighTram 25, Volgren has extended a 45-year partnership with HESS, providing local sales and delivery

Volgren will also provide final fit out, installation and commissioning of the Brisbane Metro vehicles plus after sales support through spare parts warehousing and body repairs.

Naef says the partnership combines global solutions and local expertise; strengthening HESS’ presence in Australia and introducing the lighTram 25 to operators in metro areas.

“When Volgren first introduced HESS’ CO-BOLT® aluminium system in 1977 it signalled a step change for the industry – a vehicle with a longer working life, shorter downtime and less need for repair. It also signalled the start of a formidable partnership, offering global solutions and local expertise.”

“Like all good partnerships, the two companies complement each other. Electric vehicles are part of HESS’ DNA which Volgren can tap as it grows its electric bus manufacturing in Australia. Volgren brings a deep understanding of the Australian bus industry and a long association with Brisbane City Council as well.”

Dale says Volgren understands that the lighTram 25 is more than a bus, it represents an entire transport solution.

“We’re very excited to continue the partnership and keen to build on their relationship to offer the lighTram 25 in Australia.”

Volgren CEO Thiago Deiro says the strategic partnership with HESS has been pivotal in advancing their capabilities and driving innovation in the Australian bus manufacturing industry.

“Through this collaboration, we’ve leveraged HESS’s global expertise and technological advancements to introduce the lighTram 25, a cutting-edge electric bus that meets the evolving needs of urban transit systems,” Deiro tells ABC

“This partnership allows us to offer high-capacity, sustainable transport solutions while maintaining our commitment to local manufacturing and job creation. By combining our strengths, we are able to provide innovative, efficient, and reliable transportation options that are set to transform the future of public transport in Australia.” Left:

Launching into the future

Nexport was the first company to deploy zero emission buses in Australia, now it’s got its eyes set on more

appear on Australian roads.

Fast forward to today and zero-emission buses (ZEBs) are the talk of the town as pressure mounts for Australia to accelerate its transition to zero emission public bus transport and reap the rewards of cleaner, safer, quieter and better electric vehicles.

One Australian OEM which has been pioneering the way is Nexport, a division of GoZero Group. Nexport was the first company to deploy zero emission buses in Australia back in 2017, supplying six electric buses to

“We have 140 Nexport built zero-emission buses on Australian roads today that have collectively driven over six million kilometres and counting – far more than any other provider.

“We’ve learnt a lot travelling those millions of kilometres, seeing how our buses perform on our roads, listening to what operators, drivers, unions and most importantly what passengers are telling us.

“Australia’s climate and roads differ from those overseas and therefore

is exactly that – designed and engineered in Australia for Australian roads and conditions.

Launching at the Bus and Coach Show in Brisbane, the Nexport NexGen electric bus is set to become one of the most popular buses on the market.

With the NSW Government implementing targets for NSW bus procurement to support local jobs and manufacturing by progressively introducing a 50 per cent local content target in new electric buses

by 2028, the role of local OEM’s like Nexport will be key to supporting the Government’s agenda. Even more so in Victoria with bus operators needing to meet at least 62 per cent local content for their government fleet.

The Nexport design and build team, led by internationally renowned ZEB expert Michel Van Maanen, is made up of expert engineers, procurement and production specialists who collectively have decades of proven local and international experience in developing and deploying electric vehicles.

“One of the driving forces behind Nexport’s success is that our expert team is constantly scouring the world to keep abreast of innovations and cherry picking the best components and ideas to design and deliver world class transport solutions, tailored to Australian conditions,” Cartwright says.

“We only use quality, tried and tested components. We source the best quality suppliers for each of the components from Australia and around the world.

“This is invaluable in providing confidence to our government and private operator customers, and its key to keeping the cost of after sales servicing and maintenance as low as possible. The parts we use can be easily sourced, and everyone in the industry is familiar with the component brand names and their quality.”

The standard model of the new Nexport NextGen ZEB features underfloor battery packs, as opposed to the old-fashioned placement on the roof. This frees up space in the roof,

allowing for an extra ten centimetres in height, providing extra comfort for the increasingly tall population and greater onboard visibility for passengers and drivers.

By removing batteries on the roof, it also optimises the positioning of the air conditioning in the roof for a more even distribution of air flow throughout the entire bus, perfect to accommodate the harshness of Australian summers and providing more even heat distribution in winter.

Greater on-road stability is also a critical safety and comfort benefit of not having batteries on the roof. The lower centre of gravity enables the bus to hug the road with greater ease and certainty, especially with the buses travelling up to 100 kilometres per hour and when travelling around corners.

“If a bus has to emergency stop – or slam on the brakes – going at that speed you can imagine what damage may occur when the batteries are housed on the roof.”

With improved aerodynamics on the outside and a fully enclosed roof with no opening for batteries or emergency exit as its in the new rear window, the overall noise level inside the bus is also lower, allowing for greater comfort.

Drivers can enjoy a more comfortable cabin with an ergonomically designed dashboard and chair, a light filled environment thanks to larger windows and the new rear window feature that also increases driver visibility. In terms of driving, a new low gear means an

increased level of torque, ensuring drivers can climb steep hills with ease.

“Wherever we can, we look to further reduce weight”, Cartwright says. “The future of zero-emissions transport is in the kilos, not the kilowatts.”

“By removing batteries from the roof, we can use lighter weight materials for the body, which reduces the overall bus weight.

“The lower the weight, the more efficient the bus will be.

“This means that the buses can either transport more passengers or travel longer distances on a single charge, delivering cost savings for operators.”

An over-arching goal for the GoZero Group is to achieve zero-emissions with zero accidents, placing safety as a top factor when designing new buses.

Nexport’s NextGen includes ADAS Level 1 standard safety features such as Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Alert (FCA), Pedestrian Collision Alert (PCA) pedestrian, cyclist and truck detection, Headway Monitoring Alert (HMW), Intelligent High beam Control (IHC), Speed Limit Warning (SLI), CCTV, and Fire Suppression System.

It’s also ADAS Level 2 compatible ensuring customers can choose a range of optional safety features such as Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA), Driver Monitoring System (DMS), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Adaptive Cruise Control, and 360° Camera functionality. Seatbelt compatible seats can be installed where required for example for school student transport.

“It’s incredibly safe,” he says.

With years of planning and experimenting going into this newest model, Cartwright says he is excited to finally launch it at the Show in September.

“We are continuously looking to the future, and we are always seeking new and improved ways to enhance passenger safety and comfort through innovation,” he says.

“We look forward to welcoming the industry on board the Nexport NextGen ZEB from the 17th of September”.

Local approach

Bus and coach HVAC manufacturer Coachair continues to make significant strides within the industry, showcasing their unwavering commitment to excellence

Earning the status of one of Australia’s most trusted airconditioning partners requires more than just a superior product or effective marketing. It demands years of dedicated effort, and Coachair has epitomised this through its pursuit of quality and innovation.

Since 1978, Coachair has been a pioneer of the Australian HVAC market, providing high-quality products and exceptional customer support, solidifying their position as an industry leader.

“We didn’t achieve this overnight,” Coachair general manager Anthony O’Donnell told ABC

“We have spent decades honing what makes us different and benchmarking how we measure up against the rest of the industry.”

O’Donnell attributes Coachair’s success to three core pillars.

Australian-owned

As an Australian-owned company, Coachair’s products are designed for Australian operators, by Australians, with the country’s unique operating environment front and centre.

“We remain one of the only companies to design, build and manufacture air conditioning systems for the Australian bus and coach industry,” O’Donnell says. “This means our products have been designed with local climates and conditions in mind.”

“Australia is a unique place where people expect and prefer a climate-control air conditioner rather than a standard heat/cool air conditioner.”

A heat/cool air conditioner does not provide dehumidification in winter, but a climate control unit ensures constant dehumidification. Given Australia’s climate, there’s no questioning why

operators prefer climate control.

“Our customers consistently recognise that with Coachair’s systems, issues like fogging and dehumidification are effectively managed.”

The operation of the A/C System is controlled by an advanced electronic Climate Control System located in the Return Air plenum of the rooftop unit. The strategically and conveniently placed electrical panel ensures easy service access from the bus cabin.

A notable aspect of Coachair’s products is their local production.

Designed and engineered in Sydney, all Coachair’s electronics for its diesel units, including the computer, controllers, dash panel and wiring, are made locally in Brisbane.

“By manufacturing the key components in Australia, we are able to control the quality and ensure our customers are always receiving the best of the best,” O’Donnell says.

“This approach helps us achieve

our goal of providing customers with quality products at a lower cost, weight and power consumption.”

Local industry experts

For most businesses, it’s the people involved that determine the success or failure of a product.

Fortunately for Coachair, they have assembled a team of experienced professionals in every department – from engineering and product development to sales, service and support.

“Industry experts lead our team, and unlike many HVAC Suppliers, our staff are local,” O’Donnell says.

“We have teams on the ground across Australia, with engineers, technicians and service managers in each capital city.

“We also provide exceptional support for rural and regional customers with a network of trusted service providers, plus personalised

Above:

visits to you from one of our industry experts.”

The HVAC supplier encourages operators to leverage its experienced employees, providing technical support over the phone or through on-site visits and fleet audits.

“We recognise the historical challenges faced by regional and rural operators in accessing support, and we have made it a priority to address these issues.”

Innovative approach

Coachair has a comprehensive product range to meet the diverse needs of bus and coach operators.

The electric series (EX) represents forward-thinking innovation, preparing bus and coach operators for the future of our industry. Meanwhile, the reliable diesel units (XT/CA) are some of the most efficient in the current market.

When zero-emissions buses emerged, Coachair immediately responded, creating a premium

product to suit the needs of the changing market.

“The EX series is a specifically designed unit for any zero emission bus, compatible with battery, electric, hydrogen and hybrid buses.”

“It’s the premium model that we market for standard 12-14 meter long buses, whether it’s a route bus or a charter bus or coach.”

Designed in Australia, the EX-series utilises market-leading technology to combine high airflow with low power consumption.

Due to the two smaller DC voltage compressors, the roof top weight is over 50 per cent lower, allowing operators to increase passenger numbers or carry extra batteries with  ease.

“Our data on the EX 32 proves it’s the lightest and most power-efficient electric unit in the Australian market today and has the largest capacity available in the local market.”

“Drawing on our 40 years of

experience building electric rail and tram units, we have leveraged our expertise and technological advances to create an innovative model for the bus and coach industry that meets our customer’s needs.”

By continually advancing its product offerings, Coachair remains at the forefront of the Australian HVAC industry. It delivers leading solutions for modern transportation challenges, which will be on display on stand S108 at the upcoming National Bus & Coach Show.

Welcome

We are truly privileged to be able to bring you the 2024 National

Bus and Coach Show

Over the past decade, bus and coach has actively worked to re-establish its image with the same robust countenance afforded its Australian transport industry counterparts.

Part of this process includes fostering and forging strong public and corporate relationships, which is why events such as this year’s National Bus and Coach Show have become such an integral part of the state association and national peak body offering.

As opposed to previous events, where New South Wales and Victoria took turns to host the Show, this year’s has been organised wholly by the Bus Industry Confederation. In 2024, we offer a platform for our state and national members, industry stakeholders and the public to engage with one another, showcasing our unique bussie culture and creating open forums for collaboration.

We’re grateful for those who have stepped up to support the bus and coach industry and take part in the Show, to be hosted at the Brisbane Conference and Exhibition Centre from the 17th to 18th September. Whether you’re a partner or exhibitor, spanning bus and coach operators, manufacturers, suppliers and providers, government, an associated organisation or a member of the public, your participation will boost the event’s success immensely.

With the final countdown to September ticking down in earnest, the Show is an important milestone in the bus and coach calendar. It not only brings peers and the public together but offers industry pundits the opportunity to highlight what’s coming up the pipeline, as well as acknowledge the absolute best from the golden past.

OPENING THE DOOR TO A GREENER FUTURE WITH VENTURA SYSTEMS

The electrification of the transport sector relies on more than just replacing traditionally fuelled vehicles. That’s why Ventura Systems is so excited to showcase the progress it has made in smarter, greener door systems.

Ventura Systems will be showcasing their innovative entrance solutions at the National Bus and Coach Show and says the advancement of its door systems has an impact on all stakeholders in the industry.

“The electrification initiative is not just about replacing diesel buses with electric ones. It’s about transforming the entire public transport ecosystem,” Ventura general manager Wolter Meijerhof told ABC.

“We are looking to emphasise the role of door systems within the transition. Public transport has many stakeholders: passengers, drivers, operators and transport authorities. Each has its own focus and perspective. What they all have

INNOVATION MEETS EXCELLENCE FOR CONSAT SHOWSTOPPERS

Increasing efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of public transport does not have to sacrifice passenger comfort. That’s the message Consat is looking to deliver at the upcoming National Bus & Coach Show.

Consat will be bringing its latest cutting-edge technology to the Show, and says it is looking forward to educating visitors on its wide range of products and services for electric and traditionally fuelled vehicles.

“Consat has plenty of new features to show. While electromobility is top of the list, Consat wants visitors to come away from the Show knowing it has an incredibly rich set of solutions for different situations,” Consat managing director Lachlan Mackay told ABC.

“Including management of charging infrastructure, zero emission and diesel fleets all in the one system.

“We are bringing some of our latest

in common is a desire for safety, reliability and efficiency.

“We may not know where a passenger’s journey ends, but we know where it begins – with our door systems. They play a vital role in ensuring a reliable, safe and comfortable journey.”

Ventura Systems’ doors offer far more than a smarter, greener solution. In addition, it has been pushing the boundaries in current technology to help lead the industry forward.

“We will be exhibiting our electric Plug Sliding, Rapid Sliding and Inward Gliding door systems,” Meijerhof continues.

“It will show new solutions such as the LED Boarding Communication System, which communicates the boarding status to passengers with bright green and red.

“We want attendees to leave with the knowledge and understanding of the best choices in door systems for the next generation of mobility.”

solutions to the Show, including our electromobility solution and, for the tech lovers we will showcase our new hardware platform.

“While our customers are growing, their environmental impact is shrinking through the use of our integrated solutions.”

Consat prides itself on its range of solutions that can help promote the shift to zero emission transportation.

“This harmony across assets means Consat has plenty of learnings to hand down to operators,” Mackay continues.

“Through global experience from many diverse environments and operating models, Consat really can provide a smooth transition to zero emission transportation.

“Consat has become a global leader in this integration, remaining agnostic across manufacturers to provide flexibility for bus and coach operators.”

NO CLIENT LEFT BEHIND BY QTK GROUP

Thermo King provider QTK Group believes the progress made in electric bus technology will be the talk of the upcoming National Bus and Coach Show, and customer solutions Manager Allan Lowes says QTK Group will be prepared for the discussion with its latest range of zeroemission bus Thermo King technology.

“Zero emissions technology will be the focus, with all the political attention it has received it is bound to draw the attention of suppliers to the industry,” Lowes tells ABC.

However, it’s not just electric and zero-emission bus technology QTK Group will be bringing to the Show. It will also be ensuring clients across regional areas will be well-looked after ahead of the eventual rollout of zero-emission technology across the country.

“QTK Group will be displaying our latest range of Thermo King products for diesel and zero-emission buses (ZEB), as well as our aftermarket capabilities,” Lowes

continues. “ We will also have a diesel solution on show, as the rollout of ZEB to regional areas will be delayed compared to the metro areas.

“It’s important that these regional operators are not forgotten.”

Aside from showcasing the latest Thermo King offerings in both the traditionally fuelled and emerging zero-emission bus sectors, Lowes says QTK Group is looking forward to being able to engage with a range of clients and stakeholders face-to-face.

“We’re excited at seeing all the latest innovative products and solutions across the industry on show,” he says.

“As always, it’s a great opportunity to network with interstate clients and partners in the industry.

“It’s always great to get everyone onto the QTK Group stand to discuss our latest products and services.”

ENGAGE WITH E-T-A AT THE SHOWSTOPPERS

German-based parts supplier E-T-A has a variety of products that have made waves in the Australasian bus and coach industry in recent years. From its market-leading circuit breakers for equipment protection to circuit protectors, more than 75 years of experience is allowing E-T-A to once again highlight its impressive capabilities at this year’s National Bus & Coach Show.

“We’re expecting even higher levels of engagement from bus and coach manufacturers in Brisbane compared to the 2022 Show,” E-T-A Australia managing director Andrew Skaltsounis told ABC.

“We want to raise awareness of our cost saving devices that go into bus and coach electrical systems.”

A primary part of its display at the show will be its SCS® Smart Control Systems for buses and coaches, including its Smart Control System 1000 power distribution units. These intelligent solutions handle power distribution and digitisation in vehicles with CAN communication, such as buses.

“The SCS portfolio comprises standardised hardware in combination with a flexibly adjustable software for easy vehicle modernisation and system integration,” Skaltsounis says.

“Comprehensive diagnostic functions allow early failure detection and reduce or avoid consequential damages, breakdown and downtimes. Flexible and compact CAN control units allow quick and easy extension of existing CAN networks.”

These units provide the benefits of electronic switching, including low control currents, low heat and noise development, high switching cycles and high cycle frequency.

Alongside E-T-A’s trusted range of electrical systems and components, Skaltsounis wants visitors to the E-T-A stall to understand the brand’s capabilities when it comes to energy saving, efficiency and electric mobility for buses and coaches.

“We want people to understand what our products can do for them regarding cost savings and efficiencies,” Skaltsounis says.

EDUCATION NAME OF VDI’S SHOW

Zero-emission buses (ZEBs) are set to be one of the major talking points of the upcoming National Bus & Coach Show, and VDI Australia is preparing to showcase its entire ZEB range in the hopes of furthering understanding around the next generation vehicles.

VDI is a proud family-owned business and Australia’s sole distributor of Yutong vehicles, from the lightweight and flexible D7, to the “face of future public transport”, the battery electric E12.

VDI national marketing manager Blake Duerden says demonstrating to the industry the technology of its battery electric bus (BEB) range and the extensive research and development process that goes into each bus is key to its upcoming showings at the Show.

“We want our customers to have a better understanding of the technology and research and development that goes into the buses we sell and the support they will have

on the rest of their journey with us,” Duerden tells ABC.

“We will be showcasing a wide range of zero-emission buses, all featuring the latest in performance and safety technology, which will also be evident in the chassis on display. Additionally, we’re preparing to introduce a new model tailored for metropolitan operators, which will soon make its mark in the market.

“We’re excited to see how much the interest and knowledge around ZEBs has changed in the Australian market.”

Looking to the future, Duerden sees the upcoming Show as an opportunity to further establish VDI’s leadership in the rapidly expanding battery electric bus (BEB) industry, showcasing the strengths of its Yutong product line.

He adds, “Our sights are set firmly on offering Australia’s operators the product and support they need and that includes the BEB space.”

FIRST TIME’S THE CHARM FOR RUD

RUD Australia is attending its first ever National Bus & Coach Show this year in the hopes of establishing itself as an industry mainstay in the areas of lifting, lashing and hoist solutions.

The global lifting technology company has been operating since 1875 but is looking to further embed itself in the Australian heavy vehicle landscape following well over a century of global operation.

“This is our first time at the Bus & Coach Show,” RUD Australia managing director Peter Nuttall tells ABC.

“We became a member of Bus Industry Confederation in 2023 because we wanted to offer quality lifting, lashing and hoist solutions to bus and coach manufacturers and workshops.”

In an industry where technological innovation is paramount to maintaining success, RUD believes it can position itself as a market leader through the displays of its Australian and German-made lifting solutions at the Show.

“We will be displaying the Australian-made Endurequip and the German-made Finkbeiner mobile heavy vehicle hoists. Endurequip is a chain driven mechanical hoist using calibrated RUD chains while Finkbeiner is a wireless hydraulic hoist,” Nuttall continues.

“Endurequip is Australia’s number one, and the only Australian-made mobile heavy vehicle hoist which is manufactured at our Brisbane factory. Endurequip has been in Australia for the last 35 years and has a very loyal customer base.

“We will also be showcasing the ICE Grade 120 lifting and lashing solutions that RUD is known for around the world.

“Many Australian automotive workshops still use traditional pits. Many bus and coach manufacturers also use standard Grade 80 and Grade 100 lifting and lashing equipment which offer considerably less value compared to the RUD Grade 120 ICE lifting and lashing points.

“We’re hoping to promote engagement and awareness of the world-class lifting, lashing and hoist solutions offered by RUD.”

Safety on the road is always a key talking point in the heavy vehicle industry, whether that be drivers, passengers, operators, or anyone in between. It’s an area of the sector that has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years, and Webfleet is preparing to push it even further at this year’s National Bus and Coach Show.

Webfleet is one of Australia’s leading providers of mobility and fleet management and believes its new technologies can provide a new and exciting point of difference in ensuring everyone in the industry remains as safe as possible on the road.

“We’ve recently seen tragedies on our roads involving buses and coaches, with multiple contributing factors,” Bridgestone’s ANZ marketing manager for Webfleet Scott Elkington tells ABC.

“Technology has come a long way to help improve the safe operation of vehicles. We expect a large chunk of the show to be focused on solutions specific to safety.

WEBFLEET’S SAFETY TECH SET TO STAR VOLVO’S CONNECTION KEY TO SHOW SUCCESS SHOWSTOPPERS

Volvo is a giant of the worldwide heavy vehicle sector, but it is heading to the upcoming National Bus and Coach Show with one clear goal, to strengthen its connections in the Australian industry and engage with a variety of professionals from across the sector.

Volvo Buses Australia will be showcasing two of its newer buses, the all-new Volvo B13R Euro 6 – which demonstrates market-leading fuel efficiency; and the Volvo BZL Electric, which for the first time in Australia, incorporates the European Volvo 7900 front and rear.

“We are so excited to connect with our industry,” Volvo Buses Australia general manager Mitch Peden told ABC.

“Operators, supply partners, industry associations – it’s such an excellent opportunity to connect with people from all around the Australian bus industry.”

Volvo is hoping to knuckle down and dive deep into the issues and opportunities that

“We will be demonstrating our AI-driven safety and technology devices – CAM150, Webfleet’s advanced vehicle reporting, including EV range, route planning and electrification analysis and Optidrive, our driver safety, recording and fleet management capabilities.”

Outside of the ability to demonstrate its new and exciting technologies, Webfleet is looking forward to using the Show as an opportunity to further strengthen its relationships with other people and organisations that operate within the bus and coach sector.

“Talking with industry and colleagues across the sector always provides insight into recent resolutions and upcoming challenges.

“It’s great to have a chinwag to trade experiences and the journeys in the last year, and that’s something that’s very hard to do over emails or on the phone.

“We want to share firsthand how working with us can reduce operating costs, improve safety and increase profitability for businesses across the industry.”

are specific to the Australian market.

“We’re looking forward to having some great conversations about what’s taking place in the industry right now,” Peden says.

“We’d love for attendees to enjoy the buses we are displaying. Our offering really shows our commitment to a cleaner, greener, quality assured future.

“I invite all Bus Show attendees to come and enjoy a coffee, meet the entire Volvo Buses Australia team, and have a talk about how Volvo Buses can truly provide sustainable solutions that are able to meet the asset life expectations of our Australian industry.”

RELIEVING THE HEAT WITH KLINEFIRE

If disaster strikes, the protection of passengers and drivers immediately becomes of paramount importance. KlineFire is already a bus and coach market leader in the sector of fire suppression safety, but it’s using the upcoming National Bus & Coach Show to continue to push the boundaries on true safety application.

KlineFire will be using the opportunity to engage with the wider bus and coach industry to launch its new in-depth training system, to ensure clients can take safety into their own hands.

“KlineFire will be launching our new online training portal to allow our customers to train their teams to service the KlineFire fire suppression system with minimal fuss,” KlineFire business development manager Allan McPhie told ABC.

“Our customers will be able to register their team members with us, access the online portal at their convenience and, once the training has been completed and assessed, Klinefire will issue a certificate of completion.

“Klinefire has been busy working in the background to improve the overall customer experience and shorten training and support times by implementing our digital transformation.

“We want to add value and flexibility to customers to train new and existing staff to suit their timeframe, save on service fees and eliminate the need to wait for a technician to attend the site.”

While Klinefire’s fire suppression system is sure to be a major talking point of the show, the company believes the industry’s ability to cast one eye to the future will be the overall biggest discussion point.

“We’re expecting the main talking points of the show to be new innovations of hybrid, electric and hydrogen buses, in all their variations,” McPhie continues.

“From route/commuter buses, school buses, Australian made and imported buses, and the newest gadgets or add-ons.

“We’re excited about viewing all the new bus builds that will be on display.”

CAMIRA CONFIRMED AS FABRIC OF BUS INDUSTRY

Acomfortable bus seat can make or break a passenger’s transport journey. That’s why Camira is so excited to display its range of fabrics at the upcoming National Bus & Coach Show.

Camira has dozens of designs in literally hundreds of colourways available for bus and coach manufacturers to choose from to suit the needs of any and every bus and coach client across Australia.

“I’m excited to showcase our products that include fresh, new designs,” Camira area business manager Rodney Peterson says.

“We will be displaying many of our fabrics, including a few newly released ranges.

“I’d like the attendees to feel listened to, valued, and recognise we are all in a partnership in this industry, and cooperation helps us all achieve a smooth bus and coach industry, and ensure customer satisfaction.

“We always look forward to hearing from operators on their procurement plans and

feedback on our range of products.”

With the bus and coach industry now driving into the future through the continually advancing zero-emission and electric bus technology, Camira believes much of the discussion at the Show will be looking forward to the industry’s next steps in decarbonisation.

“Although zero-emission vehicles are being introduced there needs to be a lot of consultation and alignment throughout the industry for it to be truly effective,” Peterson continues.

“The Bus & Coach Show is an arena where many levels of industry will be attending and contributing to the ongoing development of this space.

“I think the main talking points of the show will be revolving around the future.

“With the Show now every two years, I’m looking forward to catching up with our clientele and industry partners to discuss all things bus and coach.”

ROYANS COACHWORKS TO DISPLAY QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF SERVICES

Royans Coachworks is known for providing stellar repair services throughout its Australian operations, but that’s not all it can do – and that’s certainly not all it can do well!

The commercial vehicle repairer business will have a booth at the upcoming National Bus & Coach Show and will not only be looking to continue to establish itself as a leader in the commercial vehicle repair sector but increase the awareness of the other services it offers customers.

“At the show, I want attendees to come away with a clear understanding of the full breadth of services that Royans Coachworks can provide,” Royans national sales manager Graeme Sharp told ABC.

“Beyond just accident repairs, we want them to know that we have an extensive branch network across Australia and that we offer retrofitting and refurbishment services.

“This includes adding important upgrades like seatbelts, disabled access, toilets, and

other amenities that can be customised to meet the specific needs of our clients.

“If you plan to attend this year’s event, we would be delighted to have you visit and we can answer any questions about our products and services. You can locate us at stand DB11.”

Royans Coachworks may be looking to utliise the opportunity to rub shoulders with industry professionals from around the country to provide knowledge of its services around the sector, but it’s also looking to gain a wider understanding of the industry as a whole through its show experience.

“The show seems like an excellent opportunity for industry professionals to stay up to date, make valuable contacts, and explore the latest advancements,” Sharp continues.

“We want to look to connect with potential customers and suppliers and check out the latest vehicle models, features, and technologies being showcased to take notes on anything particularly innovative or that could impact our business.”

THE FUTURE IS NOW WITH HESS’ RECORD-BREAKING LIGHTRAM® 25

Records are made to be broken, and HESS has the chance to become the talk of the upcoming National Bus and Coach Show when it debuts the lighTram® 25, the longest electric vehicle to grace Australian shores.

HESS has been a provider of eBus solutions around the world for well over a century, and says the Show is the perfect place to unveil the lighTram 25 in front of the country’s leading private and government bus operators.

“Launching the vehicle at the National Bus and Coach Show is an opportunity for the entire bus industry to experience the sheer space and capacity of the lighTram 25, plus catch a glimpse of vehicles travelling on the busways of Brisbane,” HESS regional manager Peter Dale told ABC.

“The lighTram 25 is well beyond the testing phase. It’s a proven solution that’s ready to be rolled out in other major cities.

“The lighTram 25 is an electric vehicle

STAYING COOL WITH COACHAIR SHOWSTOPPERS

As one of the pioneers of Australia’s bus and coach HVAC industry, Coachair plays a crucial role in keeping Australia’s fleets on the move. At the upcoming National Bus and Coach Show, it will showcase some of the key products and spare parts it provides clients to keep them running.

Coachair will display a range of its HVAC (heating ventilation and air conditioning) systems designed and engineered in Australia, specifically for the Australian climate, to help keep drivers and passengers comfortable all year round.

“We strongly believe products designed with local climates and conditions in mind deliver a superior outcome, and we’re excited to share some of our units and their benefits,” Coachair general manager Anthony O’Donnell told ABC.

“As the only HVAC supplier in Australia with onshore engineering, we are confident our technology consistently outperforms in

that offers the passenger capacity of a tram or light rail, with the manoeuvrability and flexibility associated with an articulated bus.”

With the decarbonisation of transportation and the increased effectiveness of public transport in the space set to take a key role in the industry’s future, HESS believes offerings like the lighTram 25 can help improve the perception of bus travel in major cities.

“In addition to electric bus fleets governments are now openly discussing bus rapid transit (BRT) as a flexible and cost-effective measure to move people quickly and efficiently,” Dale continues.

“We believe buses can take a lead role in a city’s transport network, and for good reason. BRT and bus travel is being seen as a step up, not a step down.”

our unique local conditions.”

Coachair’s local expertise goes beyond climate, however. Their range is designed to meet the needs of every bus and coach, with service and spare parts to keep fleets operational.

“Our EX32 model is designed for a range of alternative fuel buses, including electric, hydrogen and hybrid,” O’Donnell continues. “This unit has the lowest whole-of-life cost compared to similar electric bus HVAC units on the market today.

“Our XT44 for diesel buses is one of the most reliable, durable and long-serving units on the market.

“Increased fan efficiency, reduced weight and return wind speed are just some of the advantages offered by the XT44.

“We’ll also be showcasing our lightweight construction demister units, which provide windscreen demisting and/or driver’s compartment heating, along with a selection of our spare parts range.”

CHALLENGER CONTINUING TO MAKE WAVES

Challenger has been hard at work over the past two years to fulfil its vision of changing the landscape of the Australian bus and coach industry. Now, at the upcoming National Bus & Coach Show, it’s ready to showcase what it has been working on to reach that lofty goal.

The Australian owned and operated bus manufacturer will be debuting its two new vehicles at the show and is making strides in both the electric and traditionally fuelled bus areas, and it’s excited to see what the reception will be to its new offerings in the market.

“We will be displaying our two brand

“We will also be displaying our V10 and V12 models so we will have our full range on display for operators to see.”

Aside from looking to introduce its game-changing Electric Low Floor and Callibar buses, Challenger is looking forward to utilising the Show as an opportunity to engage with present and future clients.

“We want attendees to meet and talk to our team,” Campbell continues.

“We are an Australian owned and operated company that value our customers and pride ourselves on our customer support. We hope to build new relationships

DOUBLE TROUBLE FOR PARTS SUPPLY AND HANOVER

Times are changing in the heavy vehicle industry, and Parts Supply and Hanover are not only excited to see some of the newest technologies across the bus sector at the upcoming National Bus and Coach Show – but to also showcase some of their own.

Chief among these will be its latest highresolution CCTV displayed by Parts Supply, targeted at protecting not only drivers and bus employees, but passengers.

“We hope to spread the word about driver safety and the importance of having CCTV to protect your fleet, employees and passengers,” Parts Supply Solutions and Hanover Displays director Fiona Watson told ABC.

“We will have real time, live view CCTV on show alongside our range of bus parts.”

Alongside Parts Supply’s CCTV showcase, partner company Hanover will be showcasing its latest screens and signs to keep passengers informed of exactly where

BUS STOP SALES SHOW STOPPER SHOWSTOPPERS

Electric buses are spearheading the bus and coach sector’s surge towards its net zero targets, but who is spearheading Australia’s push towards decarbonising the industry? Bus Stop Sales.

The Brisbane-based supplier or electric and low-emission buses is attending the upcoming National Bus and Coach Show in the hopes that attendees don’t only walk away with an appreciation for the technological advancements in the space, but the knowledge that Bus Stop can provide overall solutions to meet the growing need for electric buses.

“As one of Australia’s leading and forward-thinking zero-emissions bus suppliers, we’re looking to showcase the latest in e-bus technology to the industry,” Bus Stop Sales Pete White tells ABC.

“Alongside King Long and I-BUS (powered by Isuzu), Bus Stop Sales is looking forward to showcasing the latest

they are, and where they’re going.

“We will be showing the great innovation of high-resolution destination signs and want to make sure people are aware of what we have on offer,” Watson says.

“We expect the supreme clarity of our full colour high-resolution signs to be one of the talking points of the show.

“We want to ensure attendees know we are two companies moving with the times with a solution for both the wider current environment and for their specific needs.

“We’re excited to see our customers again and reconnecting with those we haven’t seen in a while, as well as building new relationships.

“Then next time we see them at upcoming future events we’re excited to continue to have our latest innovations on show.”

electric urban buses, Euro 6 charter coaches and I-BUS NPS 4x4 models.

“We look forward to demonstrating our ability as a holistic, end-to-end solutions provider on all zero-emission needs, whether it be locally manufactured here in Australia or a solution that is imported through our manufacturing partners.”

The shift towards a lower emission future for the industry will undoubtedly be one of the major talking points of the upcoming Show, but outside those discussions around what’s happening and what’s next in the industry, Bus Stop Sales says the coming together of so many different parts of the industry offered an unprecedented chance to share hard-earned information with customers and clients, all in one place.

“The focus of the Show will be on next technology solutions, and it represents a great opportunity for both suppliers and operators, big and small, to come together, share knowledge and catch up.”

WHEN YOU SPEAK, STYLERIDE LISTENS

Taking customer feedback and a willingness to improve are crucial to any company looking to take the next step forward, and StyleRide is ready to showcase improvements it has made through ongoing discussions in the past year.

The bus and coach seat manufacturer is preparing to unveil a new product at this year’s National Bus and Coach Show, and says it is excited to continue its discourse with current and potential customers at the event.

“We have made quite a few changes over the last 12 months that we believe will allow us to better serve our customers,” StyleRide managing director Garrin Angel tells ABC.

“Our customers have spoken, and we have listened. This show will allow us to chat with decision-makers within the bus industry and provide details on what we have done and what we plan on doing in the future.

“StyleRide will have a range of products on display, and we encourage visitors to try our seats and have a chat with us about how we can help with any of your seating requirements.

“Our display will provide a sample of our core products, but don’t hesitate to ask what we can do to personalise your bus.”

StyleRide will also be using the Show as an opportunity to introduce new business development manager Troy Wells, who is keen to rekindle relationships from his previous time spent in the bus industry.

“Troy has been absent from the bus industry for a few years and is keen to catch up with everyone once again,” Angel continues.

“From an industry perspective it is always fantastic to get everyone together at the one location and catch up with friends, old and new, to talk about what is new and how we can help each other prosper into the future.”

TAKE IN TRANSPORTME’S TOTAL SOLUTION

Having been founded in 2013 by former Ryan’s Bus Service managing director Nigel Tooth, TransportME has come a long way in just over a decade. Its attendance at this year’s National Bus & Coach Show will see it present its exciting transit management system that is making waves for Australian bus and coach operators.

“We’re excited to showcase our amazing product ecosystem to both our current and future clients, as well as to the industry as a whole,” Tooth told ABC.

“Our company and solution have come a long way since we began over 10 years ago, but also since the last bus show we attended.”

TransportME’s space at the Brisbane show will allow it to display its entire transit management system, which encompasses the largest product suite for any vendor in its space. While there are plenty of features that form part of TransportME’s solution, Tooth will be focusing on showing off the route guidance, vehicle maintenance and shifts rosters charter

SAFETY FIRST FOR SCANIA SHOW SHOWSTOPPERS

In the eyes of the transport industry, safety comes first. The ability to protect those on the road should be of paramount importance to every organisation, which is why Scania is promoting its new safety features at the National Bus and Coach Show.

“Scania’s safety theme for the show will focus on our advanced driver assistance systems,” Scania Bus and Power Solutions director of sales Julian Gurney told ABC.

“We will explain how they work to benefit drivers, operators and passengers, as well as vulnerable road users.

“Our core messaging will be focused on our state-of-the-art active and passive safety systems for all classes of products.

“We hope attendees visiting the Scania display will learn more about our proactive commitment to sustainable and safe transport solutions for Australians.”

Safety may be coming first for Scania at this year’s Show, but the world-leading

modules in particular to attendees.

“We’re looking to gain product recognition and understanding by displaying our solution at the show,” Tooth says.

“It’ll provide us the opportunity to take note of any gaps in our technology and ways in which we can further build on our ever-growing product ecosystem.”

With Tooth expecting technology to be high on the agenda, he wants operators attending the show to see how TransportME’s driver console unit and transit management system can reduce paperwork and provide a total solution for operations.

“We want operators and key stakeholders to come and see us to get a feel for our solution and how it can benefit not only their own fleet but also the industry,” Tooth says.

“TransportME has continually disrupted the bus industry and our latest software releases again show we are still doing this and proves why we are now the leading solution in our space.”

transport solutions provider is by no means limiting itself to just a singular focus.

The decarbonisation of the transport industry has also been front of mind for Scania, and it is preparing to showcase its latest low emission and battery electric vehicle technologies too.

“We will also display our latest generation battery electric bus chassis and have some exciting news for long distance touring and charter operators,” Gurney says.

“There is no shortage of exciting new product on the Scania display stand, with our latest ‘Scania Touring’ charter/touring coach, our latest generation BEV chassis with new high-capacity batteries, plus an Irizar-bodied coach and a city bus.

“We are also very well placed to build on the federal government’s interest in low emission fuels, which Scania is already demonstrating in Australia with biodiesel fuelled customer vehicles in service now.”

At Coachair, we are always looking ahead – working to improve our products, services and support to ensure we are prepared to meet our customers’ future needs.

COOL DOWN WITH DENSO SHOWSTOPPERS

The decarbonisation and electrification of the international bus and coach industry is not just limited to engines of the buses themselves. Rather, it relates to every aspect of the vehicle – and that’s where DENSO is looking to shine in the upcoming National Bus & Coach Show.

DENSO has been an international world-leader in the aftermarket parts space since its Japanese foundation in 1949, and it’s looking to showcase its electric air-conditioning system in Brisbane’s September heat at the Show.

“DENSO is releasing a new electric air conditioner to the market,” DENSO business development manager Robert Smart told ABC.

“It will be the most advanced unit of its kind.

“We will be displaying our new AC, our ‘Movincool’ spot cooler and compressors.”

DENSO’s ‘Movincool’ is a portable spot cooling air-conditioner that has proven itself

in a variety of environments since its initial development over 30 years ago.

While it has gained a reputation for being able to handle a variety of commercial light industrial needs, DENSO believes its offerings at the upcoming Show will help push the decarbonisation of the wider transport industry.

“We are expecting zero-emissions technology to be the major talking point of the Show, so we hope attendees can gain a strong understanding of the continual development DENSO puts into its product to help the global push to advance to a greener planet.”

DENSO released their first generation of zero-emissions air-conditioning products 24 months ago and have been receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback on these first-gen electric units.

These are an electric variant of our LD9 series, using our latest e-compressors, automotive heat exchangers and high-efficiency components to fuel superior performance and efficiency.

DENSO’s second generation AC unit is available now and will be a game changer for the industry.

BASK IN QUALITY WITH BCI

As a popular Australian bodybuilder and bus manufacturer, Bus & Coach International (BCI) has a range of vehicles it’s ready to display at this year’s National Bus & Coach Show. In Brisbane, BCI will display a variety of buses and coaches to highlight its increasing versatility for Australasian operators.

“This year, BCI’s new stand will be displaying four different vehicles,” BCI Australia sales development manager Armando Baylon told ABC.

“It includes two diesel BCI coaches built on Europeans OEMs such as Volvo and Scania, one BCI electric coach and an innovative BCI mini bus.”

Baylon says BCI is excited about participating in the 2024 show, with the event offering a blend of business growth, brand enhancement and personal and team development opportunities.

He says the event will allow BCI to generate new leads, connect with other professionals,

liaise with potential partners and create sales opportunities for the brand.

“We’ll be launching new vehicles, introducing our products to a wider and diverse audience and positioning ourselves as leaders and innovators in the Australian bus industry,” Baylon says.

Central to this will be BCI’s growing zero-emissions bus range, with its electric vehicles set to join the main focus of the show. Whether it be through its standard body options or its new electric variants, BCI is preparing for a bumper show.

“We’re hoping to share with our visitors an updated perception of BCI’s company, product and services as an Australian company leading the bus industry with its focus on innovation, new technology and safety,” Baylon says.

“We’ll be getting to know potential customers’ needs and preferences better through our sales team, who will be at the show and present at all times at BCI’s stand to guide our visitors through.”

Bringing intelligent public transportation to life

STRONG SIGNS POINT TO LUMINATOR SUCCESS

For bus and coach passengers nothing is more important than the destination.

That’s why Luminator’s light weight low power consumption LED destination signs will be presented at the upcoming National Bus & Coach Show.

Luminator is set to have a raft of new and exciting products on display at the Show, from its lightweight destination signs, CCTV technology and an impressive, blind spot-eliminating camera mirror system.

Senior manager of operations Anthony Goodman says he’s excited for attendees across the industry to view and discuss Luminator’s offerings at the upcoming Show.

“This year’s bus Show is another fantastic opportunity for Luminator to be present with our products and have access and Showsure to the industry,” Goodman tells ABC.

“We will be displaying our current lightweight, energy efficient LED destination signs, along with an example of our passenger information system.

“We will have our CCTV product on show

ALL SIGNS POINT TO MCNAUGHTANS SHOWSTOPPERS

Whether it be through destination signs, overhead announcements or detailed signage, communication is key in ensuring passengers remain safe, comfortable and informed on public transport. That’s why McNaughtans is hoping to push its variety of vinyl floor signage at the upcoming National Bus and Coach Show.

The South African born company has been operating on the world stage for over 75 years, and in Australia since 2003, and believes Showsure is key when it comes to the application of its floor signage.

“We’re hoping attendees receive more Showsure and education to our Tarabus printed logo tiles surrounding wheelchair and no standing areas,” McNaughtans national sales manager Steve Cieslak tells ABC.

“We’ll be displaying our core products to the bus industry – the Tarabus floor coverings, Tru Vision wipers and Southco

which provides real-time viewing and the ability to email system fault alerts to the operators.

“Finally, we will also be displaying our camera mirror system, which provides drivers with next level vision, above what standard mirrors provide to eliminate blind spots and provide clearer images in all environmental conditions.”

Goodman believes driver safety solutions are only increasing in importance for the heavy vehicle industry, and Luminator can provide next level products in the space.

“From our position on what Luminator can provide to the industry, we are starting to see how driver awareness and safety systems are becoming a common discussion point at these events,” he continues.

“It will be good for the attendees to come and visit the booth and leave with an understanding that Luminator has products and solutions to meet their current needs, and will still be around to support them well into the future.”

access hardware at the show.

“Our Gerfloor Tarabus floor coverings are made specifically for city bus applications, while the Southco access hardware covers locks, latches, hinges and more.”

While displaying a handful of products that will remain necessary on all public transport options moving into the future, McNaughtans believes one of the largest discussion points at the show will be around the transition from traditionally fuelled to renewable buses, and which lesser-emission option will be more readily implemented by the industry.

“We think the transition of e-buses versus hydrogen buses and how the industry continues to move into towards decarbonisation will be a pretty major discussion point,” Cieslak says.

ANGELTRAX: HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

In the modern world of internationally produced goods, Australian made products for the Australian market still hold huge importance to local customers. That’s what AngelTrax sees as an important point of difference in the world of in-vehicle bus and coach surveillance.

Alongside its CCTV and e-mirror offerings, AngelTrax will be displaying the first ever LED destination sign to be manufactured in Australia.

AngelTrax says it’s important to continue to manufacture its products for the Australian bus and coach market in Australia to maintain a true understanding of the domestic market’s needs and innovation opportunities.

“We want to highlight that we’re a fully Australian-owned company that manufactures its signs and associated products here in Australia,” AngelTrax sales specialist Robert Barwick says.

“We will be introducing the first

LED destination sign manufactured here in Australia, as well as our CCTV and e-mirrors.

“Attendees will see our new products that can be purchased with full backup, training savings and easy software solutions.

“We’re expecting our products to be a key discussion point to come out of the upcoming National Bus & Coach Show.”

GOZERO FIRST IN, BEST DRESSED

This year’s National Bus & Coach Show is set to start with a bang, not a stutter, with GoZero Group opening the program with the unveiling of its new bus.

GoZero will be launching its brand new Australian designed and engineered NShowrt NexGen Electric Bus to open the event and expects the opening offering to be one of the major talking points of the show.

“GoZero Group are excited to be launching our brand new NShowrt NexGen Electric Bus fresh off the production line,” GoZero managing director Stephen Cartwright told ABC.

“The launch will be the first event on the programme on day one of the conference.

“GoZero’s newest model is designed and engineered in Australia for Australian roads and conditions which is great for local industry. For every one bus made in Australia, five jobs are retained – now that’s exciting.

“As a leading local OEM, we can’t wait for our customers to see the latest and greatest in electric bus and coaches for the Australian market, and expect the NexGen Low Floor Electric bus to be a major talking point.”

A key point of difference in the NexGen offering is the lack of presence of batteries on the vehicle’s roof which, according to GoZero, will improve safety and comfort for both the bus driver and its passengers.

“Our new 12.5 metre low floor public transport battery electric bus can carry up to 79 passengers and is capable of multiple charging methods and available in two battery variants,” Cartwright continues.

“The standard variant has no batteries on the roof which ensures greater safety and a smoother ride for drivers and passengers.

“We will also be showcasing our state-ofthe-art coach and minibus.

“We are looking forward to exciting and delighting our customers with our NShowrt buses – and taking their orders, of course!”

Fuelling up for success

Volvo Bus Australia has had a strong first half of the year, with its newest model, the B13R, smashing expectations on Australian roads

WORDS TIARNA CONDREN IMAGES VOLVO BUS

Volvo Bus has long been an innovator in the local chassis space with a wealth of models running smoothly on Australian roads each day.

Quite often seen hitting the tar is the brand’s premier B11R coach, which quickly found success within the market when it was launched in 2015. With admirers from day one, the coach soon became a predominant product for Australian operators.

While many seemed happy with the current coach, Volvo Bus continued to look to the future, focusing on updating and elevating what we already know and love.

Launched earlier this year, the Volvo B13R was unveiled as the newest addition to Volvo Bus Australia’s fleet, joining the likes of the popular B8R and B8RLE models that have become increasingly prevalent in Australia, as

well as the trusted B11R coach that it will eventually replace.

For operators, Volvo Bus APAC director of product and engineering Mark Fryer told ABC that there are plenty of benefits in this latest Volvo model.

“It was developed with operators and drivers in mind and is designed to meet the demanding operating conditions of Australia, with a firm focus on safety, comfort and productivity,” Fryer says.

“We have also completely redesigned its electrical system, resulting in a new digital display dash for drivers.”

Volvo has also increased the movement of the steering column to improve the ergonomics for drivers, while changes to the rear axle means there’s a brand-new transmission in this coach model.

Above:

The B13R is proving to be a favourite among Australian drivers already

Instead of just offering its standard iShift transmission, the B13R also has an option for overdrive included to bring down the revs on high gears, saving fuel.

Eastern Australian Coaches’ operator Campbell Lewis was one of the lucky few to receive his new coach first, picking up the newest model around Easter this year.

“I had purchased my first Volvo, a B11R, around 15 months ago,” Lewis told ABC

“I thought it was a great vehicle, and with the promise that the B13R would be even better, I thought I’d better give it a go.”

The B13R’s electric architecture means it can run a variety of operations, from normal charter work around Australia to more complex tourism work in New Zealand’s renowned mountainous ranges with little hassle.

Based around Western Sydney, Lewis is often driving across the Blue Mountains for work doing extended tours, rail replacement, and general long-distance work.

“It can be pretty tough terrain, and a lot of buses would be eating fuel along those roads,” he says.

“But the fuel consumption with the B13R has been exceptional.”

“I completed a run from Western Sydney, across the mountains out west and back, and it was running in the high 25 litres per 100kms when I got back.”

The new 13-litre engine and driveline feature several fuel-saving technologies, helping to reduce fuel consumption by up to 9 per cent compared with the previous engine. A new engine compartment layout and unique cooling system operated by electrical fans lower engine revs at cruising speed, further highlighting cost savings.

Coming in either a 460hp or 500hp power level, the B13Rs engine can also be run on biofuel to improve its environmental performance and footprint. It also features the Volvo Acceleration Limiter, which helps the driver to moderate the power and maintain fuel economy.

Sweetening the deal even more is the addition of a 90L AdBlue tank –the largest Volvo has ever offered the local market.

While reaping cost-saving benefits is at the top of many operators’ minds,

and passenger safety.

“What I’ve loved the most about the safety features is how passive they’ve been,” Lewis says.

“The alerts and corrections are smooth and easy to understand. If you begin to drift, your leg will vibrate, whether on the right or left side, and you can swiftly and easily correct your driving.

“Even drivers who have historically thought new technology was a bad thing, have begun changing their minds after experiencing this new

the drivers can be as comfortable as possible, which is also shown with the new driver aids.”

The steering wheel now features buttons for cruise control and various media is available with a neck-tilt to suit driver ergonomics. The improved display features a new ‘dynamic instrument cluster’ with different views to provide a superior overview of important driver information, enhancing driver focus and control.

“I am incredibly happy with the new coach. There are still a few things I have to set up, but with each update, everything keeps getting better and better,” Lewis says.

While B13R’s start clocking up kilometres on Australian roads, general manager Mitch Peden is looking to the operators to inform them on how Volvo can continually improve.

“It’s amazing to start receiving feedback from operators after they have had some time to test them on the roads,” Peden told ABC

“There is no one better to let you know how a bus is going than the person behind the wheel.

“We’re looking forward to continuing to work closely with operators and improving our product offerings year on end.”

Safety in layers

Bridgestone’s fleet management solution, Webfleet, provides devices and software that enables operators to upgrade their vehicles to meet changing times

WORDS TIARNA CONDREN

While new vehicle technology continues to evolve and arrive on Australasian shores, it’s the harderto-spot pieces of software that are rapidly enhancing the passenger and driver experience.

As we hit the second half of 2024, one would be hard-pressed to find a new bus coming from manufacturers that didn’t have some form of telematics running through it, but it wasn’t always this way.

Suspicion was rife throughout the industry upon the first introduction of the technology, with drivers hating the idea of being constantly monitored by cameras and operators with privacy and data concerns.

But now, perspectives seem to be changing, with Bridgestone’s ANZ marketing manager for Webfleet Scott Elkington telling ABC the bus industry has begun capitalising on the benefits this technology can have.

Being at the forefront of mobility with a broad range of vehicle tracking

Above: Telematics are evolving to suit the ever-changing needs of the zeroemissions space. Image: Shutterstock / Ground Picture

and fleet management solutions, Elkington has seen firsthand how the industry is changing its view on emerging technologies.

“Many people think telematics is dot-on-the-map tracking and navigation,” Elkington says. “But it’s evolved well past that now.”

Elkington says a primary function of modern fleet management technology is to act as a live data extraction and monitor – in whichever form the data takes.

“The biggest advantage of

such technology is that it’s vehicle agnostic. It can be installed into any bus, new or old, essentially modernising it, and gives you a unified data set and platform to see it all. Need to see the CO2 emissions from a vehicle? Telematics can provide whatever insights you need.”

Elkington says one of the biggest drawcards of the technology is its application for safety.

“Fleet management solutions such as our AI dashcams provide safety in layers,” Elkington says.

Cameras facing the driver’s seat and the road are often paired with bus monitoring software, which can indicate significant events occurring on the bus. These can range from harsh braking or poor cornering to signs of fatigue, such as closing eyes, and bursts of quick acceleration.

“Incidents often have a single point of failure, where something goes wrong, and there’s no secondary system or failsafe to prevent a catastrophic spiral of events.”

“With AI dashcams, however, risky or unusual behaviour is caught early, alerting the drivers immediately of an issue.”

Webfleet’s dashcam has three cameras installed: one outward-facing camera, one inward-facing camera, and an AI inward-facing camera.

The software installed on top can detect numerous markers for fatigue and distraction, such as eyes drifting, lane drifting, cell phone use, and eating food. It can also detect tailgating, potholes, and road surface deterioration.

“While alerting the drivers there and then, the data can also be sent

to any supervisors and managers,” Elkington says.

“One of the things we have seen is that the technology can be used to grow integrity in drivers by handing the data over to them and giving agency over how they can improve.

“For such a small investment, it drastically improves safety outcomes.”

While safety is one of the selling points, telematics also provides valuable information that goes hand in hand with the modern bus revolution. As more operators switch to electric and zero-emissions standards begin popping up across the states, many are looking towards bus technology to help them achieve their goals.

Telematics like Webfleet can help fleets reduce their CO2 impact nearly immediately by targeting wasteful

activities like idling or excessive revs and promoting beneficial ones like coasting and green zones.

The devices can be installed very quickly and at a low cost, providing operators with the exact data and numbers that they need for emissions reporting.

“It’s tough to accurately assess how much energy your buses are using because there isn’t a fixed cost. It’s not like buying a thousand litres of fuel for the yard; the cost fluctuates on where and when charging occurs.”

“You can use Webfleet to report where, when, and how much an electric bus has charged, giving hard numbers on energy consumed. There’s a lot of value in that.”

While the technology is modern and forward-thinking, it isn’t just reserved for newer buses; the devices also work seamlessly in older models.

“Technology like this doesn’t require a whole new bus,” Elkington says. “It can be easily installed into an older model to bring it up to a fleet standard for a fraction of the cost.”

“Our technology has continued to upgrade older vehicles and give them new life in the face of shifting standards. Even though it may not have been considered, it’s one of the cheapest ways to ensure your vehicles are ready for any future.”

Climbing up

The Australian bus and coach industry has hit a milestone, with a recordbreaking number of deliveries for the month of July

With previous months staying consistent in the 130-50s, July has smashed those numbers out of the park, delivering 216 buses and coaches in the month.

Volvo once again dominated the chassis market, this time with a whopping 75 deliveries in the month of July, almost doubling the runner-up Yutong who sat at 43 deliveries. Scania was hot on their heels, with 31 deliveries, while BCI (19) and BYD (11) trailed closely behind. King Long (nine), Isuzu (eight) and MAN (seven) were neck to neck while Custom Denning and Mercedes-Benz sat with five each. BLK trickled in with two deliveries for July, with Challenger finishing us off with one.

Volgren continued to break its own records this month, with the bodybuilder making 72 deliveries in July. Yutong wasn’t too far off its tail, bringing in 43 and beating out BCI (24), Irizar (21) and Nexport (10). King Long sat at a comfortable nine deliveries, while Custom Bus and I-Bus tied on eight deliveries for the month. Custom Denning had a respectable six, with Global

Custom Denning had a respectable six, with Global Bus Venture and BLK trailing along after on three. Coach Design, BusTech Group and Marcopolo each has two while Challenger, Coach Concepts and Express Coaches rallied at the end with one delivery each.

Sales by Air-Conditioner

After a lengthy back and forth each month, Coachair and Thermo King have this month tied on 49 deliveries each. Cling-Yutong tried hard to create a trio, ultimately just missing out with 43 deliveries for July. Hispacold was on par with last month’s numbers pulling in 21 units, while King Long sent off nine and Spheros and Songz tied on eight. Rounding us off was MCC on six, Denso on three and Valeo bringing us home on two.

Sales by chassis

Volvo once again dominated the chassis market, this time with a whopping 75 deliveries in the month of July, almost doubling the runner-up Yutong who sat at 43 deliveries. Scania was hot on their heels, with 31 deliveries, while BCI (19) and BYD (11) trailed closely behind. King Long (nine), Isuzu (eight) and MAN (seven) were neck to neck while Custom Denning and Mercedes-Benz sat with five each. BLK trickled in with two deliveries for July, with Challenger finishing us off with one.

ILeaving Lonestar

With 31 years in the industry under his belt, it was a hard decision for Les Bultitude to leave it all behind
WORDS TIARNA CONDREN IMAGES LES BULTITUDE

f you’ve ever travelled through the Gold Coast, there’s a large chance you’ve spotted one of the famous Lonestar Coachlines buses.

With distinctive lime-green mirrors and a legacy in the Queensland industry spanning more than two decades, the business has become synonymous with the city.

Over the years, the business has operated key contracts for Department of Transport & Main Roads and NSW Trains, while also ensuring kids from prestigious Gold Coast schools like The Southport School, St Hilda’s School and Emmanuel College all make it to homeroom on time.

Being a significant Translink operator on the Gold Coast, second only to Kinetic, the company also operates numerous charter, touring and inbound services.

While to the untrained eye it appears as if this success happened overnight, it was actually the hard work and determination of managing director Les Bultitude that cemented the business in history.

Bultitude has worked within the bus industry for his entire working life, going back 31 years to Grafton, NSW.

“My first job was actually working for Woolworths as a casual,” Bultitude told ABC

“However I would often help Fred Schwinghammer of Grafton Busco with his horses that were housed behind the bus depot.

“It didn’t take long before we had built a connection, and Fred put me behind the wheel of a bus on a farm road and taught me how to drive. Those were the glory days of the industry in my opinion and so much fun.”

Soon completing his higher school certificate, Bultitude was originally enrolled to go to university, but

having bonded with Schwinghammer and taken an interest in the industry, decided to defer his studies.

“I remember telling my parents, who are third generation farmers, of my decision, and you could tell they were disappointed,” he says.

“But I knew this is what I wanted to do.”

Not long after his unconventional lessons, Bultitude officially commenced working as a school bus driver in May 1993, where at 19 years old, he became the youngest licensed bus driver in NSW. The school bus that he was allocated to drive as his first run

was the very same that took him to and from school less than a year prior.

“I look back on my memories of Fred and Grafton Busco fondly and learnt a lot over those next few years from Fred and other Grafton business mentors,” Bultitude says.

Taking from their knowledge and expertise it was only four years later that Bultitude had saved a large enough deposit to start his own operations.

“I purchased my first coach, a 1988 Austral Tourmaster, from Port Macquarie bus service in 1997,” he says.

“I was only 23 then and I remember vividly how difficult it was to convince Esanda to finance me into that first bus at such a young age.

“I certainly received no assistance, either emotionally or financially from anyone to enter the industry so it was not easy getting to the stage of buying that first bus I assure you.”

From there, things began to flourish, with Bultitude purchasing Grafton Glass & Aluminium and the Shell Grafton Transit Roadhouse. At the age of 25, he had at least 50 employees working under him. It was at the Roadhouse that he also secured the patronage of Greyhound Pioneer, McCafferty’s and Kirklands/Premier.

Bultitude attributes a lot of his early success to the support he received from his pop, who worked with him on the buses and roadhouse, often washing buses on their return from Canberra at 2:00 am for turnarounds, up until he was near 80 years of age.

“He always encouraged and supported me my entire life and taught me that hard work pays off. I will forever be grateful to the values he instilled in me and miss him dearly.”

In 2002, an awakening in his personal life led him to make some dramatic changes, ultimately selling all of his business interests in Grafton and moving to the Gold Coast.

With a fresh start comes new opportunities, and Bultitude soon saw himself working at Murrays Coaches under the guidance of his mentor and friend Lyle Friske, who encouraged him to get back into it and start buying buses once more.

“That is when I started operating predominantly on the Gold Coast, as a sub-contract operator.”

Over the years Les has gone from a single bus sub-contract bus operator to the operator of one of the Gold Coast’s largest modern fleet of coaches, having acquired along the way many long-established well-known operations such as Surfers Paradise Coaches from Don Phelan, Sainty’s Bus Service from Glen Sainty, Tamborine Mountain Bus Service from Chris Erickson and Point to Point Coaches, merging all these businesses under the Lonestar umbrella.

“I’ve enjoyed some stand-out times

whilst working in the industry such as when I had coaches at the 2000 Olympic Games. I actually met my good friend and owner/operator of Mullumbimby Bus Service, Garry Hughes there who has incidentally advised me personally on the sale of Lonestar,” he says.

“More recently a standout event was when I supplied coaches and acted as the depot manager for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.”

Over the last few years Les was nominated and successfully voted in to represent the Queensland Tourist Coach segment of the industry with QBIC, a position which he has been again invited to retain.

“After dedicating so much of my life to the industry I will continue to give my little bit back to the industry and will fight on for the good of the industry via QBIC and representations to the government.”

From meeting the love of his life, to seeing success in the industry, it’s clear that moving to the Gold Coast was one of the best decisions Les has ever made, despite there still being some issues he encountered.

“My time in the industry has not been without difficulties. Not least of all was when I was attacked because of my sexuality from within the industry and more recently undoubtedly, covid,” he says.

“No matter what minority an operator may belong to, if any, I strongly encourage them to always hold their head high and not get down

in the mud no matter how much you are attacked.

“ If you concentrate on providing the customers with a quality product and what they ask for, success will follow. Times change and the bus industry is not immune to that so bus operations must develop alongside it.”

Now, Bultitude has decided that his time as a bus and coach operator has come to an end, recently selling Lonestar Coachlines to Belbaker Bus Charter.

Bultitude assured ABC the Lonestar name and reputation will continue, just under the guidance of the Belbaker team now.

“They are making a point to keep it all the same as it was before. All of the drivers and management will move over to Belbaker as well.”

Moving forward, Bultitude plans to use his newly found free time to spend time with a special someone.

“Operating your own business does give you a lot of autonomy and flexibility but there is a lot of sacrifice that goes along with it. The sacrifice of the proprietor of any successful business is what I will not miss though,” he says.

“A big part in influencing my decision to sell Lonestar was the little seven-year-old girl in my life, Emma, whose name has always been proudly displayed above the door of the Lonestar flagship.

“I intend on dedicating a lot more of my time to her and returning to the farm to build that to what it
