and due diligence, calculating battery power, run-time and carbon-emission reduction for the converted Kenworth T609. “Now it’s time to get the truck loaded and on the road to see if the practical application measures up to the theoretical,” Fennell said. “It’s an educated gamble, but one we feel compelled to take for the benefit of the heavy transport industry and future generations.” After successful preliminary trials in the Green Tri-

8 OPINION
Wendy Fennell and Janus Electric general manager Lex Forsyth in front of the purpose-built charging station on site.
Fennell said the reason she chose Janus Electric to convert an existing prime mover was because she knew the drivetrain and the cab and the rest of the unit was proven in her busy operation. She also had plenty of “discussions” with energy companies about the impact of drawing from the grid to power the two batteries that now sit where the fuel tanks once were. The expected range for the 540kW, 720-horsepower motor is between 400-500km on a full charge. To facilitate faster charging turnarounds with minimal disruptions, Fennell has installed an on-site charging station for the batteries which has the ability to program optimal charging times. “Obviously we’ll be doing that in off-peak times, but until they [the energy companies] start seeing the draw day in and day out that will be something that we fine tune. “The way our operation works is that we are two 12hour shifts so we run pretty well 23-24 hours a day. “The indication is that hopefully one set of batteries will last the 12-hour shift because we do a lot of short running, and loading and unloading takes up a lot of time. We could do three or four loads in a shift. “So, we’ve got 12 hours before we need to change the batteries over and the batteries only take four hours to charge
which gives us a fairly big window. “Because we run all hours of the day, that means we can charge in those off-peak periods, or when there’s availability at the grid.” With a spare pair of charged batteries always available on site that means the converted T609 only needs to be idle during the time it takes for Fennell Forestry staff to switch them out. At present, because the equipment is new, that’s around 10 minutes, but Fennell expects they’ll soon have that down to 4-5 minutes. “That was one of the big advantages of this system; heavy vehicles can’t be sitting around, they’re too capital and labour intensive.” Fennell credits her experienced workshop manager John ‘JB’ Bignell for first bringing the idea to her. “He’s got 50 years of experience in the automotive industry and he liked the electric motor, and how it would work, and he could see it working in our application. “I liked it because our transport operation in the Green Triangle is unique in the fact that we deliver to sawmills, and we’re back to base every day. “And the sawmills have huge energy infrastructure in the fact that they’ve got big transformers. So, my first thought was that we’ll be able to tap into their energy supply. “For the trial, I set up that

infrastructure in my depot, but that’s something I think the Green Triangle forest industry can really look at going forward. “If this trial is successful, and we convert more of the fleets to electric vehicles, the sawmills may have the capacity to set up charging stations utilising the power draw that they have to fire their sawmills, but that’s not always fully utilised.” Even so, Fennell concedes she didn’t rush into commissioning Janus Electric for her first conversion. She did more than her fair share of due diligence around making sure that the on-andoff-road truck wasn’t increasing risk in her operation, including the chance of it causing a fire. “But what’s been actually established is that these engines run 40-degrees cooler than a diesel engine,” she said. “The batteries are constantly monitored, and they only sit around 32-degrees, and we’ve had some pretty hot days here recently and we haven’t seen any change in that either.” Continued on page 16

Driver program expands to the Kimberley and Pilbara
When the going gets tough, truckies keep everyone going
#PicOfThe Month
AT a time when the industry is screaming out for heavy vehicle drivers and looking at ways to attract new talent, why is it that some feel it’s okay to take to social media and tear others down? At Big Rigs, we share and celebrate the stories of countless truckies, regardless of whether they are male or female. While a truckie’s gender plays no role in determining whether or not their story gets published, there’s a big disparity in the sorts of comments we’re seeing online. Almost every time we share a feature about a female driver on our Facebook page, the sexist ‘commentators’ come out to play. While women driving trucks “isn’t news” in the words of some vocal readers, their stories are just as deserving of space as their male counterparts. And yet we see the same sorts of comments over and over again: “Who cares?”, “Not news”, “Just get on with it”. Strangely, when it’s the story of a male truckie, the keyboard warriors go quiet.
Luke Moylan captured this great pic of a Frasers Livestock truck, with six decks on.

angle region, Fennell says the early signs are encouraging that the B-double is up to the demanding task. “But to really determine whether it’s suitable in transport, you one have to have reliability and two, durability, so that’s what needs to be tested over time. “That’s why it’s going to take a couple of years to test it like-for-like with a diesel engine unit, but also to understand the costings going forward as far as supply chain costs are.”

But as she puts Australia’s first battery-electric logging truck into its first month of official work from the company’s Mount Gambier base, the pioneering SA operator is feeling confident she can silence the sceptics. WELL known truckie Paul ‘Sludge’ Andrews is undergoing more surgery, as he continues his long recovery after a motorcycle accident earlier this year. The truck driver, who many know from his regular appearances on Outback Truckers, together with his purple 2008 Peterbilt 379 called ‘The Phantom’, was rushed to hospital on March 4. The accident left him with significant injuries including a brain injury, broken ribs, several broken bones, torn ligaments, fractured cheek bones and lots of bruising and abra-

sions. In late June, he returned to hospital to have surgery on both his knees.
Many of our readers have wished him well afer the latest update was shared online. “Good luck with your treatment, it’s no fun. I feel for you, I have been in your shoes,” said Micheal Radamanthos. Tracey Akers wrote, “All the best, love watching you on Outback Truckers and the truck you drive is my favourite truck – Peterbuilt. Love them.” Ted Scarfe added, “Keep on keeping on Sludge. Things can only get better for you.” While Len Gloria Herbert wrote, “We are thinking of you, all the best.”

vehicle driver training in the Kimberley and Pilbara. As Western Roads Federation CEO Cam Dumesny explained, “In WA especially, the labour shortage is extreme. When you’re running at a 3 per cent unemployment rate, we’re all competing for a very small pool of available people. The mining industry is about 38,000 people short, so we’re all trying to fight for a small pool of people. “There is a transport company over here who will be 300 plus short of drivers within the next three months. The
mining activity here is still extremely strong and growing – and we’re short in every section, even the removalist companies are trying to get offsiders.” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti added that the program’s expansions will provide a much-needed boost to the transport industry in the Kimberley and Pilbara. “With 350 participants expected through the course over the next four years, the McGowan Government is helping to create a pipeline of skilled workers for this es-

sential industry well into the future.” Run in the metropolitan area from April 2021, and expanded to the south-west and mid-west over the past two years, the Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations program trains new workers and upskills existing workers to combat skills. Since February 2023, of the 552 participants enrolled at a TAFE college to undertake the Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations program, 282 had achieved either a Heavy Rigid, Heavy Combination or
Multi Combination licence. Around 30 per cent of participants in the course have been women, compared to the overall female representation among truck drivers in Western Australia being less than four per cent. “We need to find ways of reaching people who aren’t already in our industry and need to look for people who wouldn’t traditionally be looking at transport as a career. We’re also reaching out to migrants and refugees, early release prisoners and defence veterans,” added Dumesny.
“In the Kimberley in particular, because they’ve had massive flooding with flood damage at Fitzroy Crossing, a lot of communities up there need to continue to be supported by transport. Involving locals in the transport industry is a good way to start. “By doing training in regional areas and tying it in with civil construction companies, we can put people in jobs where they can help build their own communities.” For more information on the initiative, please visit jobsandskills.wa.gov.au/skillsready.

FOLLOWING previous success, the WA Government will be expanding its Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations training program to the Kimberley and Pilbara in a bid to get more local people into the driver’s seat. The $3.5 million expansion of the program was funded as part of the 2023-24 state budget. Developed in collaboration with industry to address the truck driver shortage, the Australian-first program provides theoretical and practical hands-on truck driver training to train job-ready workers for the transport industry. The additional investment in the program will support North Regional TAFE to deliver the training to around 350 participants in the Pilbara and Kimberley over a four-year period, providing employment opportunities for local people, including Aboriginal people, living in these regions. It’s also set to support the economy, including government civil construction projects, by providing a trained, local heavy vehicle workforce, and address the need for heavy

Tippers deliver all day long for Melbourne operator
Dino Peacock’s two tippers are used for excavation works at Clay Excavations.
DINO Peacock’s work boots are coated in mud, but his two Isuzu tippers gleam in the morning sun. “It’s the way we keep them here,” says Peacock proudly. “It does look good when you rock up to a job and you’ve got new gear like this.” Peacock’s two tippers are engaged in excavation works for his 37-year-young company Clay Excavations, which services non-commercial digs in Nar Nar Goon North, sitting on the outskirts of Pakenham in Melbourne’s southeast. Peacock prefers to keep things close to home, helping his neighbours and nearby farmers with excavation work that varies from horse arenas, earthworks and cuts for farm buildings, driveways and dams. Whether its small or large, ‘local’ is his specialty.
“My customers pay as soon as I finish and with a smile on their face,” Peacock reports. “When I’m not digging with the machinery, I’ll be carting crushed rock for days backwards and forwards in the big tipper, averaging about eight loads a day.” Peacock is a familiar face down at the nearby Fulton-Hogan quarry, where he collects crushed rock in a steady stream with the larger of his two trucks, a new 6×4 FXY 240-350 Auto. This big Isuzu unit is equipped with a Hardox Steel tipper body from AA Diesel Bodies; designed for impact strength and durability for load after load. It replaces Clay Excavation’s 2022 Isuzu FXY beavertail, also fitted by AA Diesel Bodies.
Matched with the grunt of the FXY 6×4 platform – which offers a generous Gross Vehicle Mass of 24,000kg and Gross Combination Mass of 45,000kg – it’s an unflappable package that can, and does, deliver for Peacock all day long. Aside from a primo performance tipping crushed rock, Peacock compliments the comfort level of the cabin and the FXY’s payload and power to tow and load machinery. It’s fitted with Isuzu’s 6UZI-TCC engine, producing 257 kw (350PS) at 2000 rpm of power and torque of 1422 Nm at 1400 rpm. “I can pull an 8-tonne tagalong float with a 5.5-tonne excavator or roller on it, plus a posi-track loader on the tipper tray,” Peacock says. “It’s a beautiful drive with
the Allison (4430) auto and the airbag suspension which rides better on the road. “I really love going to work in it… I can drive it all day and don’t feel too weary when I get home.” The standard MyIsuzu Co-Pilot 10.1-inch High-Definition touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility might be over-specified for this self-confessed penand-paper man, but Peacock enjoys the comfort of the ISRI 6860 air suspension seat – regarded as one of the best seats in the business. In comparison, Peacock’s NMR 45-150 Tipper with 6-speed Automated Manual Transmission – from Isuzu’s 4.5-tonne GVM Ready-toWork range – looks like a pint-sized cousin against the shoulder of the beefier FXY. Its small size doesn’t mean it doesn’t pack a punch though. The efficient four-cylinder Isuzu common rail engine keeps jobs ticking along nicely and it’s sized just right for tight access spots where a bigger truck wouldn’t have a hope of squeezing in. The NMR Tipper’s 2.0 cubic metre capacity and car licence nominal payload of 1,695kg equates to a very practical transport solution, and Peacock is pleased with the versatility it offers Clay Excavations. At the moment, it’s either Freddy (Peacock’s right-hand man) carting machinery or Peacock’s daughter behind the wheel, both using a regular car driver’s licence. “Funnily enough my daughter’s car engine blewup recently, so she’s been driving our little tipper, clocking up the kilometres… but since it’s got our name stamped all over it, it looks like a big billboard driving around. “You’ve got to be in it to win it!” Peacock quips. Whether on the road or
working on site, these two tippers are pulling their weight for Clay Excavations. I think they’re really good at what they do. “It’s likely that I’ll end up buying a bigger horsepower Isuzu truck, probably in the next year, and two or three years down the track I’ll have another one again. “I virtually ordered the FXY 240-350 tipper a week after I bought the beavertail in 2022, that’s how impressed I was with the trucks.”
Protecting HVAC systems with a Ryco cabin air filter
ONE of the most overlooked truck filters is the cabin air filter. “Cabin filters are a relatively new innovation and many truck owners aren’t even aware if their vehicles are fitted with one,” said Alastair Hampton, Ryco’s general manager of engineering and innovation. “This can lead to these filters not being replaced as regularly as they should. In a time that the health and safety of many people has become so important, replacing an existing cabin filter with the best available on the market is a reasonably small investment to make.” There are two things that are really important for a cabin filter to do: Firstly they need to protect the cabin’s occupants, making sure they are not exposed to airborne pollution whilst driving along the road. It’s also protecting them from pollens and particles that aggravate allergies. Secondly, they protect the HVAC system which, over time, collects dirt and dust, coupled with moisture and the cold. Without the HVAC system you end up growing mildew, resulting in flow issues and expensive maintenance. There’s never been a more
in filters from Ryco are 99.7 per cent efficient and tested and compliant to ISO111552:2009 standards,” Hampton added. The increased protection of the upgraded MicroShield range comes from an innovative three-layer system. The first layer is anti-viral with natural polyphenol extracts that eliminate viruses, bacteria and allergens. The second layer is activated carbon which is designed for odour and gas absorption. The third and last is medical grade polypropylene that’s electrostatically charged, which collects more micro particles. All

MicroShield cabin filters are 100 per cent safe and free from pollution. One of the many advantages of fitting a Ryco MicroShield cabin filter is the anti-viral layer inhibits the survival of bacteria and viruses using a natural micronutrient called polyphenol. The benefit is that not only does a Ryco cabin filter stop the bacteria and viruses from entering the truck’s cabin, it also destroys them at the same time. This includes serious diseases like Influenza A and H1N1/H3N3. With research showing that a cabin’s interior can contain
over 10 times more pollutants than the outside air, Ryco is strongly urging all truck owners and workshops to make a cabin filter check and/or replacement a priority. When completed by a professional, a check or replacement takes only a matter of minutes on most vehicles. When it comes to product design and development, Hampton commented, “The Ryco MicroShield cabin filters now exceed the fit, sealing and filtration efficiency of their original equipment (OE) counterparts. To do this, we concentrated on precisely matching the
BEING able to rely on safe operation is one of the key principles underlying efficient transportation and modern logistics. For more than 115 years, Knorr-Bremse has been a major driving force behind road and traffic safety. Now Knorr-Bremse is taking the next steps towards fulfilling the “Zero Accidents” vision by going on a broadbased product offensive, with the launch of the modular SYNACT disc brake family and reduced-weight NexTT disc brake for trailers. Key products in this campaign include the modular SYNACT disc brake family, including the SYNACT Radial and axial SYNACT Compact, as well as the reduced-weight NexTT disc brake for trailers. With more than 30 years of experience in developing pneumatic disc brakes for commercial vehicles, and over 50 million units produced, Knorr-Bremse is the global technology and market leader in this field. With the introduction of the SYNACT radial brake, the company has further expanded the SYNACT
family and adapted it for city buses.
Wheel end – the modular SYNACT family In the 30 kNm class, the new SYNACT brake delivers new levels of performance, weight and efficiency, reducing unladen weight by up to 10kg. Fitted with the optional Active Caliper Release (ACR) system, SYNACT can also reduce fuel consumption by as much as one per cent. The new, fully encapsulated bearings further enhance the brake’s durability. With these new features, not only is Knorr-Bremse’s SYNACT able to make vehicle operations more economical; it also sets a new standard for accident-free passenger and freight transportation. This integrated wheelend unit comprises actuator, brake caliper, brake pad and disc. The robust disc brakes in the modular SYNACT family are energy-efficient and easy to install, with sufficient flexibility to fit changing space requirements. Typical options include, for example, a more compact axial design or a
radial cylinder arrangement. The optimised weight and dimensions of the wheel-end unit provide designers of electrified commercial vehicles with considerable freedom. The modular SYNACT approach will also accommodate future solutions for minimising brake-dust emissions and electrifying the braking system.
Latest trailer tech For trailer disc brakes, Knorr-Bremse offers the reduced-weight NexTT single-piston disc brake, the epitome of high efficiency. At less than 29kg, the NexTT is the lightest 22.5inch trailer disc brake on the market, comprising a harmonised wheel-end consisting of actuator, caliper pad and disc, optimised for 9 tonne semi-trailer axle applications. The NexTT provides improved running clearance stability via reduced pad movement by change of the pad support and innovative taper wear compensation. This results in improved robustness, increasing the pad clearance and

After a dog, a dashcam is a driver’s best friend
BY ANDREW ROSSINGTON, CHIEF PRODUCT OFFICER, TELETRAC NAVMAN
AS every driver knows, you’ve got to keep your eyes on the road. Conditions change fast, other drivers are unpredictable and unfamiliar roads pose a challenge. But what if you had an extra set of eyes helping you out? This is where a smart dashcam comes into play. For many drivers and operators, a dashcam can be your best friend on the road. There are lots of good reasons why it makes sense to invest in a quality dashcam, particularly one where new technology, incorporating artificial intelligence, is used to tell you more than just show you footage. The latest cameras won’t just record your journey. They recognise road signs, which is a boon when you’re driving a route you don’t know well. Approaching a stop or giveway sign? Your dashcam will warn you if you pass these incorrectly. And with speed limit sign recognition, there’s

never any danger of breaking the law and facing a fine, disciplinary action from your employer or potentially losing your license. It’s easy to let your speed creep up, especially on a long, open road where other users might be breaking the limit. But as an operator, you know
you must stay below the posted maximum – and the average speed cameras on most major highways will catch you out if you don’t. A dashcam will keep a watchful look out for you, adding another set of eyes to the road. Most modern dashcams also have low light sensors, which is where
many incidents occur, and can be used to potentially see through bad weather onto the road ahead when needed. New dashcams can also warn you if you’re following another vehicle too closely, or if you’re engaging in harsh braking or manoeuvring. Drivers have a heavy work-
load, and any assistance you can get to make sure you get to your destination safely, and on time, is worth having. When you’re on the road, you also quicky realise some other users pose a danger, both to you, as an operator, as well as to themselves and others. A lack of lane discipline,

speeding, cutting in front of your truck and undertaking are some of the behaviours operators must deal with every day. A dashcam can also help you out if there’s an incident, validating your side of the story and helping with insurance claims. This is where the traditional function of a dashcam – aside from the AI features like road sign recognition – comes in handy. A dashcam is an impartial witness to what has happened, and the footage can be relayed to your insurer or enforcement as it can be tendered as evidence in court. You might not get the same companionship from a dashcam that you’d get from a pet, but you will get another set of impartial eyes, eyes which can help you do your job better, arrive at your destination safely and act as a witness if there is an incident. What’s not to like? So for any of your smart camera requirements in your business, get in touch with your local Teletrac Navman team member, by calling 1300 111 477.
