Welcome

to Issue 511 of your Deals on Wheels Magazine

As this edition of Deals on Wheels hits the streets our team will be well and truly in preparation mode for the Castlemaine Rotary Truck Show in November, and busy planning for the final two editions of 2024.

We also welcome Kayla Walsh as Assistant Editor of Deals on Wheels, a well-earned promotion for one of our most experienced and hard-working journalists, whose name you’ll no doubt recognise already from the regular features she’s written for the magazine.

As the year races toward its end, we continue to celebrate the transport and trucking industry with coverage of recent truck events, including the Kenworth Klassic, the Gold Coast Truck Show, the Young Truck Show, Sunnydale Vintage Day and the Rusty Iron Rally. We know how much work goes into organising these events, and also into the restoration and maintenance of the trucks on show.

The passion for transport, the love of a brand or a style of truck, and the desire to keep a family tradition alive shine through in this month’s features, including Peter Rowling’s love affair with V8 Macks.

While we have thousands of trucks and plenty of parts for sale in the magazine each month, we’re also aiming to shine a light on the extra elements of the truck industry that help to keep the dream alive – such as the team behind the Kleening Zone truck wash in WA, and the Little Big Rigs group whose passion for all things truck led them to meet and show off miniature remote controlled trucks that are faithful copies of popular trucks models.

This month we also have a Trucking Trivia page, where you can test your knowledge of popular terms and trucking history, and we take a look at the Mad Max-inspired collection of trucks and cars that collector Adrian Bennett has gathered for his Mad Max 2 museum in the tiny town of Silverton in NSW.

I hope you enjoy the read and I look forward to catching up with some of you next month in Castlemaine too. If you have a story to share, please don’t hesitate to email me at geoff.crockett@primecreative.com.au

Autonomous truck trials

Road trains that drive themselves are on the way

As the quest for reduced carbon emissions and maximum productivity continues to evolve around the world, truck maker Scania and Australian mining company Fortescue are joining forces to develop an autonomous mining road train.

The companies announced this month that they are keen to develop and validate a fully integrated autonomous road train and test it at Fortescue’s iron ore operation at Christmas Creek, WA.

“By utilising Scania’s extensive knowledge in supplying trucks to the mining industry and our expertise in autonomous driving, the Road Train solution will reduce the overall mining footprint,” says Manfred Streit, managing director at Scania Australia.

With Scania’s technology in truck automation, the autonomous solution will be integrated with Fortescue’s Fleet Management System (FMS) designed to optimise fleet utilisation and maximise productivity, while ensuring efficient fuel and energy consumption to reduce carbon emissions.

The solution will also integrate Scania’s onboard autonomation hardware and technology for the Scania R770 prime mover platform, coupled with three trailers weighing 120 tonnes with a payload of 240 tonnes.

“This is a great opportunity for Scania to

learn more about autonomy in demanding conditions with an innovative partner,” says Peter Hafmar, head of Autonomous Solutions, Scania.

Fortescue Metals CEO Dino Otranto says working with Scania would provide a next step in the evolution of its autonomous haulage solutions.

“Our deep expertise in autonomous haulage has enabled us to jointly develop a unique autonomous solution that unlocks high grade, satellite deposits for us to mine economically,” Otranto says.

“This project will help us maximise productivity with unique low-cost solutions in our mining value chain.”

The two companies have been working together in the mining space for many years and Scania Australia’s head of Mining, Robert Taylor, says the relationship has helped both companies to improve and evolve their operations.

“Their heavy haul trucks operate in an incredibly harsh environment. The local and global mining specialists have devised a solution that will bring efficiency and safety,” Taylor says.

Scania and Fortescue’s statement on the joint venture notes that the two companies share the same values in safety, operational efficiency and reducing carbon footprints.

Scania and Fortescue are keen to test autonomous road trains on a mine site in Western Australia.

Dean Campbell shares the story behind his super cool rigs, which have built up a bit of a cult following

Words: Kayla Walsh

Boogie Nights’ might look like it's here to party, but it does some serious work

‘Believe and Succeed’ got its name from a conversation between Dean and his late grandmother

Dean Campbell’s late grandmother used to treasure a framed picture of a truck that her grandson drew when he was just five years old.

On the side of the rig, he had written ‘DA Campbell Transport’ — the name of the company he would go on to set up years later.

“Even at five years old, I knew I was going to start my own business,” he laughs. “I was always pretty determined.”

Dean started out as a one-man-show with a single International Transtar, but is now the proud owner of 27 trucks and 50 trailers.

Based in Bathurst, New South Wales, the fleet moves goods throughout most of Australia, concentrating on general freight.

A logging division of the business has also recently been launched.

“We have six B-doubles and a loader doing logging runs from Bathurst every day,” he says. “That’s brand new, we just started in this financial year.”

With a family background in transport, Dean’s destiny might have already been sealed — but he was determined to make it on his own.

“My father and my grandfather were both owner-drivers — my father still has one truck,” he says.

“But I never took over anything. People might think I started with a lot, but I started with nothing.

The retro red, yellow and orange stripes make 'Boogie Nights' stand out on the road

‘Boogie Nights’ has a special story behind it

Dean and a young fan, who approached him with a picture he drew of 'Boogie Nights'

‘Boogie Nights’ is probably Dean’s most famous truck

“I was living in my nan’s garage when I bought my first new truck!”

‘Boogie Nights’ is a regular sight at truck shows along the East Coast

‘Believe and Succeed’ was the second truck

Dean ever bought, and his first brand-new truck.

Dean admits getting his business off the ground wasn’t easy, but failure was never an option.

“A lot of the time I was being told, even by my parents, to calm down — that Rome wasn’t built in a day.

“The decisions I made, people thought I was getting myself in the deep end and trying to do too much.

“It’s a seriously challenging industry, and there have been massive lows as well as massive highs.

“But I guess I knew that this was what I wanted to do, and that I wasn’t going to let it beat me.”

Having three young children at home now has added more complications to the mix, but Dean says you have to make sacrifices to get ahead. “There have been a lot of late nights and a lot of working day after day in a row.

“Sure, I want to be home, but if I've got to go out in the truck on Saturday night, Sunday, whenever, that doesn’t bother me.

“I grew up around my dad, he did interstate and he went whichever day he had to go.

“There’s a job that has to be done and people relying on you.”

DA Campbell Transport has built up a reputation for its reliable services — but that’s not the only reason the company name might be familiar to you.

Dean’s unique trucks have attracted a cult following, with rigs like ‘Boogie Nights’ and ‘Believe and Succeed’ well known amongst trucking afficionados.

The famous fleet can often be spotted at truck shows — and Campbell’s have merch to boot!

Fans can get themselves a t-shirt, stubby holder, or even footy shorts featuring their favourite truck. Dean explains that the idea snowballed after they initially made t-shirts just for staff.

“Everyone wanted one, so we decided to start selling them,” he says.

“My mum took it on and she travels around to different shows with the merch, as a bit of a hobby.”

We asked Dean to tell us about some of his most popular trucks and the story behind them.

Boogie Nights

‘Boogie Nights’ is probably Dean’s most famous truck — with red, orange and yellow striping on black paintwork giving 70s disco vibes.

But the 2018 Kenworth T900 also brings back some sad memories, as at one stage it was a toss-up whether it was going to go to Dean or his late friend Dane Ballinger.

Dane, who ran a successful transport company out of Bathurst, sadly died in a road collision in 2019.

“Klos Custom Trucks were building Boogie Nights, and I used to debate who would get it,” says Dean.

“Unfortunately, Dane passed away. So the Klos brothers said ‘Well the truck is yours now, but we’ll have to do something special for your friend.’

“It’s now got his name on the back wall of the truck, with a picture of him painted on the inside of the sun visor.

“It’s bittersweet. Dane was one of those guys who made a massive impression on everyone he met, and we all really miss him.”

Believe and Succeed

‘Believe and Succeed’ was the second truck Dean ever bought, and his first brandnew truck.

He got it when he was just 21 years old,

and still has it to this day — with about three million kilometres on the clock.

“When I was 21, my late grandmother and I were sitting at the table one night and she named that truck,” he says.

“It just stuck, and I put it on the back wall of the truck.

“It’s one of only three trucks I’ve owned that I drive myself, and I’ve had one or two drivers in it.

“It’s still running around doing the same thing it was when I got it!’

To this day, ‘Believe and Succeed’ is a motto that Dean lives by.

“One of the things that my dad always said

The incredible-looking Anzac trailers started as a tribute to Dean's late grandfather

DEALS Feature

to me was, you’ve got to be consistent.

“It’s all about consistency and routine and repetition.

“It might seem like you’re going nowhere for a while, but as the years go by, the rewards start coming in.”

Anzac trailers

It’s not just the trucks in Dean’s fleet that are special — he also has some trailers that bear a special tribute to Anzac Day, in honour of his grandfather.

“I didn’t actually know my grandfather personally, because he died when my mum was only nine, but that’s how the Anzac trailers came about,” he says.

“I used to march with his medals on Anzac Day and the idea developed from that.”

Initially, Dean was going to put a picture of his grandfather on a horse on one of his trailers, but in the end he went in a slightly different direction.

“We got a heap of photos and ideas together and designed something,” he says.

“We still have a soldier on a horse but it’s

just a picture that we found, not specifically my grandfather.”

Dean says the trailers are often parked on display in Bathurst on Anzac Day, and get a huge response.

“I honestly get phone calls and emails every week from people who can’t believe what they’ve seen.

“A lot of ex-servicemen, or women who send emails about their father and how he would have loved the trailers.”

Rig resto

Dean is in the process of carrying out a full restoration on a 1998 Kenworth T950.

“I chose that truck because you can’t buy the T950 anymore and I wanted something from that era.

"It’s obviously older and it’s a big job so it will probably take a couple of years.

“We’ve got a mechanic in the workshop and we’ve just started to build for it.

“We’ve got the cabin pulled apart and we’re ready to do repairs — it’ll start coming together at some point soon!”

Fixing heavy vehicle access is the key

As the need for freight continues to grow, it’s imperative thought is put into providing the most effective and productive routes for operators to use

Heavy vehicle access permits might not sound like an everyday concern for most Australians, however failure to prioritise access reform comes with significant risks to our supply chain, economy and the wider community.

from the government that optimising the use of road infrastructure to enable access for high productivity vehicles will ultimately deliver better outcomes for the whole community.

Reducing access red tape on operators allows freight to be moved as efficiently as possible, with better outcomes for the road network, for safety, productivity and the environment.

The new NSW Heavy Vehicle Access Policy will drive reforms to improve endto-end networks, encourage innovation in vehicle design, prioritise and streamline access approvals, as well as progress-related reforms (such as delivering better rest areas).

NatRoad's CEO Warren Clark says a uniform approach to heavy vehicle access is imperative. Image: sandy/stock. adobe.com

Debates on issues impacting our industry such as road safety, industry standards, the driver shortage, productivity, rising costs and the need to reduce emissions are often conducted without consideration of an important element of context. The elephant in the room has been the increasing size of the freight task, which will make all these challenges much harder to solve.

In New South Wales, the Government expects the amount of road freight will increase by 57 percent above 2020 levels by 2040. The interstate road task is expected to increase by 84 percent by 2040.

As growth in freight is linked to growth in the economy and the size of the population, this challenge will be faced by all states and territories.

We face the prospect of interstate freight on our highways being projected to almost double in the next 20 years. The need to move freight as efficiently as possible and with the least number of individual vehicle trips will become a clear and pressing task for both industry and governments.

The reality is we don’t have enough drivers to move today’s freight task, let alone the significant growth in freight expected by 2040.

Industry can’t solve this challenge buried under red tape, high costs and a permit system designed for a bygone era.

At the recent NatRoad Connect 24 event in Coffs Harbour NSW, Transport Minister Jo Haylen launched a refreshed NSW Heavy Vehicle Access Policy, recognising road freight as an essential industry.

While it might seem an obscure public service document to some, the roadmap is a critical tool to drive reforms. It’s recognition

Governments and their agencies are also working towards the development of a National Automated Access System. Inspired by the Tasmanian Heavy Vehicle Access Management System (HVAMS) model, the idea is to automate access decisions and cut away red tape. However, we must also remember the real merit of the Tasmanian system is a change in thinking away from permits to network-based access. It isn’t just a matter of putting a layer of automation over the top of the broken permit system.

The Kanofski recommendations, intended to put heavy vehicle law reform back on track, envisaged the number of permits under a National Automated Access System should be slashed by 90 percent within 5 years. Also critical to making this goal achievable is ensuring more is done to improve access by notice.

NatRoad has strongly advocated for governments to prioritise delivery of the National Automated Access System with enough funding to get the job done. We were pleased to see the Australian Government support the development of Tasmania’s HVAMS model. Now we need a national delivery plan with committed funding to ensure the new system becomes a reality.

Getting back-end access systems fit for the 21st century also means we can talk about ending red tape and the high cost burdens on operators. One startling example is Victoria’s approach to charging up to tens of thousands of dollars for bridge assessments. This is a clear handbrake on improving efficiency and lowering emissions. In 2024, it is just not defensible to say to operators that emissions need to come down, and then impose eye watering costs on proposals to do it.

Fixing access is the reform that unlocks a wide range of benefits and positions our industry to better meet the challenge of a growing freight task.

Spring sales boost

A grand total of 3,566 trucks were sold in September across the light, medium and heavy-duty truck categories measured by the Truck Industry Council’s T-Mark report. The results show an uptick of 6.6 per cent in volumes from September 2023, when 3,345 trucks were sold across all three categories.

Heavy Vehicles – Monthly Sales

Medium Vehicles – Monthly Sales

Light Vehicles – Monthly Sales

Isuzu continues to dominate the Australian truck market in the medium and light duty sectors

While this September has outperformed last September, on a year-to-date basis overall sales across the combined categories are down 3.98 per cent from 30,942 trucks sold to September 30, 2023 versus 29,710 trucks sold to September 30, 2024. Across the categories Kenworth topped the sales of heavy-duty trucks for September, Isuzu won the battle in the medium duty sector and also took the gold in the light duty segment.

Heavy duty

(Cab-chassis type vehicles, both rigid and prime mover, with three or more axles or two axles, a GVM > 8,000kg and GCM of > 39,000kg)

Kenworth continued to build on its sales lead in the heavy-duty sector last month, delivering 382 trucks and accounting for 25 per cent of the monthly sales. These results contributed to a yearto-date sales tally of 2,703 trucks sold, or 21 per cent of the total heavy-duty market.

The remainder of the top 10 in the September sales race were: Volvo (286), Isuzu (207), Scania (113), Mercedes-Benz (111), Mack (76), UD Trucks (71), Hino (68), Fuso (59), and DAF (44).

Medium duty

(Cab-chassis type vehicle with GVM > 8,000kg and GCM up to and including 39,000kg)

Isuzu’s reign over this sector of the truck market continued in September with the delivery of 350 trucks — 149 more than its closest competitor Hino with 201.

On a year-to-date basis Isuzu has captured 51.5 per cent of all sales, amassing a tally of 3,101, nearly double Hino’s year-to-date results of 1,719, which equates to 28.5 per cent of the 6,025 sales made in the category as at the end of September 2024. Rounding out the top 10 for September were Fuso (99), Iveco (17), Hyundai (11), UD Trucks (11), Mercedes-Benz (8), Volvo (7), Man (3), and DAF (2).

Light duty

(Cab-chassis type vehicle with GVM of 3,501kg to 8,000kg inclusive)

The battle for supremacy in the light duty truck market remains firmly planted in favour of Australia’s biggest selling truck brand, Isuzu.

While Isuzu delivered 540 light trucks in September, accounting for 40.7 per cent of the total 1,327 trucks sold for the month, Fiat shines through as having had a big month, with 230 sales or 17.3 per cent of trucks sold.

The September results for the Italian truck maker put it second for the month, while on a year-to-date basis its 677 sales see it account for just 6.3 per cent of the market, coming in behind Isuzu, Fuso, Hino, and Iveco in terms of sales volumes.

For September the top 10 was Isuzu, Fiat, Hino (138), Fuso (128), Iveco (127), Renault (56), Mercedes-Benz (54), Hyundai (34), LDV (7), Volkswagen (7) and Ford (6).

Classic

When the Millikin family were faced with the choice of upgrading a favourite truck, repowering was a ‘no-brainer’

Repowering a 1998 Kenworth T900 with a Cummins X15 Euro 3 engine was a “nobrainer” for Aaron Millikin after he weighed up the options.

The popular T900 is a “totally different truck” since the X15 repower

installation I'm over the moon with the

The T900 Classic, one of 11 Kenworths operated by the Millikin family business, Greenlands Garden Centre, was originally equipped with a Cummins N14 Red Head and had started life in a logging operation in Coffs Harbour, NSW.

The Millikin business is based in Moruya on the NSW south coast and incorporates the Blue Ridge Quarry which produces up to 150,000 tonnes of material a year.

Around half of the Millikins’ haulage work is for their quarry and garden supply and landscaping business, while the other half is carried out on a sub-contract basis, transporting bulk products like aggregate, sand, fertiliser and grain.

Jeff Millikin started the Greenlands business in 2007 after a career as a professional driver and today has sons Aaron and Andrew and daughter Sarah in the business in key roles. Aaron manages

the truck fleet, Andrew is responsible for fleet maintenance and Sarah is office manager.

“We’ve owned the T900 for around four years and started to have a few dramas with the N14,” says Aaron.

“We looked at the options — rebuild or repower — and decided that repowering with the X15 Euro 3 engine was a no brainer with the benefits it offered.”

Repower perfection

So impressed is Aaron with the T900 repower — a project carried out by Cummins Newcastle — that it may not be the last truck the company subjects to a heart transplant.

“We’re actually talking now about buying older trucks and repowering them with the X15 Euro 3 engine,” he confides. “The economics make sense in our operation and it also gives us parts commonality with the 10 other X15 engines in the fleet.

“I’m over the moon with the repower installation,” he adds. “I can’t speak highly enough of Dan Stoneman and the team at

Images: Cummins

Cummins Newcastle. The passion they put into the project was unbelievable.”

The Euro 3 engine has become a popular repower option. It has the same base engine hardware as the X15 Euro 6 powerhouse but without the SCR aftertreatment; it can only be installed in pre-2008 registered on-highway trucks.

The Millikin T900, now with 2.6 million kilometres on its odometer, is coupled to a three-axle dog and operates at a gross weight of 50.5 tonnes, doing five to six loads a day carrying 32-tonne payloads.

Totally different truck

Aaron says the T900 is now a “totally different truck” and that the performance improvement was expected with the X15 which is rated at 550 hp with peak torque of 1850 lb compared with the N14’s 525hp and 1650 lb ft.

“We’re now doing much faster trip times,” he says. “We’ve gained a gear uphill and a gearand-a-half downhill due to the X15 engine brake.”

This kind of performance is important in the Millikin operation which often sees the T900 on the steep Clyde Mountain climb in the Great Dividing Range, hauling sand to the Snowy Hydro Scheme and returning with maximum weight bulk product.

“The N14 was good on fuel but the X15 is edging it in this area too, while delivering far better performance,” says Aaron.

Callie Sandilands, who shares the driving with Aaron, didn’t really want to pilot the T900 at first because she was “wrapped up in the N14”.

“However, I’m stoked with the X15,” she says. “It’s heaps better in every way — faster uphill and faster downhill with the engine brake. Tip times are so much quicker.”

The Greenlands Garden Centre's T900 is now achieving much faster trip times

Rounds MAKING THE

Every month we turn the spotlight on show going truck lovers and find out a little more about their passion projects

Double Trouble

Spending a lifetime immersed in the world of trucks, Anthony Churchill has grown up around transport, taking over his father’s business in the mid 90s.

Continuing the legacy of his family-run business Churchill Transport, Anthony operates a fleet of 20 good-looking rigs.

Catching the eyes of many, two of his dazzling Kenworths cruised through the Clarendon Classic Truck Show gates. While Anthony couldn’t attend — thanks to a commitment to footy finals — two of his drivers showcased the trucks.

Double the trouble, the two Kenworth Legends were the real stars of the show, captivating onlookers’ attention.

“I’ve always liked the green colour, and they both used to be completely green about 10 years ago until we decided to change it up with the stripe,” he says.

Both trucks were bought brand-new when they joined the fleet. The 900 was purchased in 2019, a simple yet vibrant design.

The all-white cab lights up with the striking green design and hints of silver outline, complimenting the stainless-steel exhausts.

Pairing up beautifully alongside it sits the

green 904, with a contrasting white stripe and highlights of bright yellow to stand out from the crowd.

The 904 is blinged up with a strong stainless steel bullbar and sky-high exhaust pipes.

The classic rigs are a pair no truck lover could simply walk by.

Anthony says he isn’t one to usually attend a truck show but is happy for his drivers to join in on the trucking fun.

“I’m fairly busy with the business but it’s good to see the drivers take interest and bring them to shows, because the rigs are always looking good,” he says.

Adding to his fleet of six, the purple beauty, freshly painted and still in its debut phase, made a grand entrance at the recent Young Truck Show.

Look at this gorgeous line up from Kiwik’s fleet.

The contrasting purple and green easily grab attention from many.

Churchill Transport provides interstate services between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Amidst the roar of thousands of other engines, Anthony’s trucks made an impression, adding their bit of flare to the colourful Clarendon Show.

Perfectly Purple

A simple family conversation triggered the design of one beautiful looking 2024 Mack Trident.

“My daughter wanted a purple truck,” says director of Kiwik Cartage, Brian Sims. “My wife said no –— it doesn’t match the others. But I said, ‘You watch, we’ll make it work.’”

“That truck isn’t even ready to go to work yet, it came straight from the paint shop to the show,” he says.

“I then took it to the bodybuilders, so now it’s getting a trailer built. It’s our newest rig.”

When you first spot Brian’s fleet, it’s hard not to be drawn in by the vibrant colours and unique designs.

“The original truck we bought was white with a green stripe, then we started developing our Kiwik logo,” he says.

“Then I bought a black truck and put our classic green stripes on it.

“Then for our next truck, Mack wanted us to spruce it up a bit.

“I wasn’t too keen, but it ended up looking pretty sick.”

When Brian and his wife Leanne were ordering their latest truck, their daughter made it clear she wanted it to be purple, and the fleet has never looked better.

“So, we got a purple one,” Brian chuckles.

With its striking purple vibrancy and contrasting dash of green, it looks like that was a decision well made for the Sims.

Brian has spent four decades of his life in the transport world, working in the car industry from as early as his 20s, but couldn’t ignore his desire to drive trucks.

Now he has transformed that dream into a thriving enterprise he runs alongside his wife, and he gets to enjoy the simple things that he loves, including truck shows and events.

Brian describes the Young Show not as a competition, but a way for families to spend time together.

“The kids come along and say, ‘Oh this is what dad does for work and who he works

with,’ and that’s what it’s about for us.

“It’s not about winning contests, more like a gathering for the family.”

It’s clear that the success of Kiwik Cartage isn’t just measured in numbers, but the family connections Brian holds most dear to him.

Thinking Pink

Husbands and wives don’t agree on many things, whether it’s what to eat for dinner, who does the household chores or what to watch on TV.

But in STA Trucking’s case, a disagreement turned out for the better.

Compromise is what led to the company’s great design of their showstopping T909 Kenworth says Tracey Armstrong, director of STA Trucking.

“I wanted a pink truck,” she says. “My husband didn't. I talked to him about my vision, and we compromised and made a pink and black truck.”

fun day out for the families, with all profits raised set to go to the Kids Foundation.”

The truck’s audacious blend of pink and black adds a splash of colour to the roads, perfectly balancing individuality with classic style.

The journey from Tracey’s vision to the truck’s final design was no small venture, as the truck initially rolled out of the factory in a conventional white with a red chassis.

And it proved its popularity, making its debut at the Lowood Truck Show along with four other trucks out of their fleet of ten.

Outshining the competition, it clinched the coveted ‘Charity’s Choice’ and “Best Truck (1-5 years)’ award, following their win for ‘Best Custom Paint’ at the Casino Truck Show.

“Winning meant that all the effort that us and our staff put in was worth it,” she says.

But STA Trucking’s commitment to transport goes beyond the gleaming exterior of their trucks, as Tracey also focuses on giving back to the community.

Currently organising a trucking event in her local area of Jimboomba, Queensland, the Scenic Rim Truck Show is set to take place on May 31, 2025 at the Jimboomba State School.

“My business partner and I want to host a

Tracey’s entry to the trucking world was unexpected.

She married into the industry and she and her husband began STA Trucking in 2012, carting produce, eggs and frozen food.

Together, their shared vision has built STA Trucking into the thriving enterprise that it is today.

Crazy FOR KENWORTH

Hawkesbury Showground was the place to be in September when the 2024 Clarendon Kenworth Klassic rolled into town

Words & Images | Warren Aitken

PA prime spot for some prime gear. The Lawrence Transport fleet is a popular subject for the truckspotters

lease excuse me for getting a little bit deep and meaningful with my introduction to this year’s Kenworth Klassic write-up. Those who have been to the Kenworth Klassic will be able to relate to my description and those who haven’t – well, I hope I can paint a calming, blissful picture that will inspire you to make the pilgrimage next year. The Kenworth Klassic is not a truck show, per se. It is a gathering, an occasion, a celebration... I’d even go as far as to say it is a rite of passage. Although I think the perfect word would actually be a "festivity". By definition, a festivity is "the celebration

of something in a joyful and exuberant way", and that is exactly what goes on for an entire weekend in the small Sydney suburb of Clarendon, every September since 2016.

Here is the deep and meaningful part I warned you about. I have been to several of these festivities and therefore I feel I can attest to this with plenty of experience. There is just something about the Kenworth Klassic, something almost sedative, something soothing. The moment you walk through the gates of the Hawkesbury Showground, you feel all your daily stresses and anxieties get

One of my favourite shots, a line up of classic classy Kenworths. This is what the weekend is all about

washed off your shoulders. There is a sense of relaxation, a sense of comradery, a sense of exultation. All mixed in with the aroma of barbeques, dagwood dogs and diesel. You are surrounded by hundreds of stunning looking Kenworths, hundreds of welllubricated Kenworth fans and thousands of bottles of tyre shine. It is an event where every Kenworth aficionado gets to show their truck, but it is by no means a truck show. In that technicality lies the source of the relaxed aura that encompasses the entire weekend.

Whilst the Kenworth Klassic is pretty much an ingrained institution amongst the transport industry, I will refresh the memories of those wondering what it is all about. It began back in 2016 as an add-on to the Clarendon Classic Rally, a local community event that sees an array of historic machinery filling up the Hawkesbury Showground. From classic

trucks to classic cars, historic tractors to historic lawnmowers. The Clarendon Classic Rally is an institution in the local area and the only place you get to enjoy watching old-school tractor pulls, before restocking your workshop with antiquated tools whilst trying to consume a soft serve ice cream before it melts all over your hand and creates that god-awful sticky finger conundrum. In 2016, Kenworth guru Dave Chapman and fellow KW devotee Bruce Gunter approached

The Dane Ballinger Memorial award was handed to Adam Twyford by Dane's wife and son. Supported by Bruce Gunter, Chappo, the Lawrence Transport crew and the Klos boys

the Clarendon committee with a proposal to utilise part of the showgrounds for a Kenworth catchup. The event was meant to be a small gathering that would piggy-back off the success of the yearly local show. Whilst the two men will claim they never anticipated the rousing interest in the show, Kenworth is a brand that doesn’t tend to do things on a small scale.

The first show drew in a couple of hundred passionate partisans, all keen to experience a non-truck show Truck Show. By last year, the number had more than doubled to 500.

This year saw the Kenworth Klassic crew prepped for 700 trucks, which wasn’t enough. They still had to make up another 22 entrant packs to ensure every Kenworth entering received their official merchandise bag. That’s an official total of 722 Kenworths for the 2024 Kenworth Klassic.

The success of the Kenworth Klassic has, in large part, been chalked up to the atmosphere it creates. It is a festivity that allows every Kenworth lover, be they six or 60 years old, the opportunity to mix and mingle. It is a weekend where fans of the badge get to just hang out and chew the fat. In its inaugural

event back in 2016, the decision was made to make this event a show for trucks, but not a truck show. There is no judging, no prizes, no expectations. There are folks rocking up in brand new T909s with more shine than the Chicago bean, parking next to semi-restored classics that have just had the cobwebs wiped of the mirrors. There are the most state-of-theart trucks Kenworth has on the market, lined up next to vehicles that ruled our roads before aircon and indicators were factory fitted. Even though it is solely a Kenworth community event, there is a huge variety of trucks and people to interact with. It is all about the company rather than the content.

The other feature of this festivity is that it is a full-on weekend event. Trucks start rolling in on the Friday morning before the show starts and there were some still popping in on the Sunday morning. Well not many – in fact, it was just one: Warren Ahern, who had just finished a run down from Brisbane. He rocked up with a beautifully rebuild W-model that got tongues wagging and cameras clicking, so he can be forgiven for the late entrance. It is a weekend event though, with drinks and laughs spreading between the polishing and

the nightly light shows. Whilst there is plenty of beers consumed over the weekend it is still marketed as a family-friendly festivity and there were plenty of the next generation of truck lovers getting indoctrinated into the best side of our industry. When the little ones did get tired of all the chrome and tall talk, they could wander over to the Clarendon Classic, which was well equipped with kids' entertainment and free-flowing sugar rushes. Now as much as I have reiterated the "not a truck show" mantra that leads the atmosphere of this event, there is actually a little bit of officiality around the event. Only one award gets formally presented each year – the Dane Ballinger Memorial Award, which this year went to Adam Twyford. However, Bruce and Chappo have their own Excellence Awards. These aren’t judged, they are just people that Bruce and Chappo choose to acknowledge, be it for their dedication to the brand, for a restoration project or their current Kenworth ride. This year those acknowledged included John Johnston, who travelled down from Dalby in his original SAR Gold Nugget, which he has owned for 30 years and still works. Scott Clarke also received an award. Scott

is a young owner-driver building himself a tidy little fleet of customised Kenworths. Craig Eagan from Just In Time Transport was acknowledged for his outstanding CAT powered W-model. Another icon of the Kenworth scene to pick up an award was the legendary Kelly Durkin, who was on hand with his outstanding SAR. The last two awards went to Carters Transport, a company fully entrenched in the Kenworth badge, and Schaeffer's Transport. Trent Schaeffer had a couple of his stunning Kenworths there, with his new K200 being a target for every truckspotter at the show.

I’ll wrap this up with a very simple statement. You have to see the Kenworth Klassic. Theres no maybes about it – the volume of vehicles, the quality of Kenworths and the cacophony of characters on hand make this an event that needs to be experienced. So, heed my words, and ensure the Kenworth Klassic 2025 is on your calendar for next year.

PS – If you happen to have a T600 or T601, then make sure it’s up and running. Rumour has it that they will be the theme for next year’s event.

RIGS

The country town of Kojonup, WA welcomed rigs from far and wide for the Sunnydale Vintage Day

This year was the fourth iteration of the Sunnydale Vintage Day in the thriving country town of Kojonup, and the Goodhalls said it went off without a hitch.

Trucks and tractors travelled from all over WA and as far afield as Victoria to join in the fun.

“We think around 300 people came through the gates on the day, plus the exhibitors,” said Stratton.

“There was a sheep boat in Perth so a lot of the local livestock trucks were working so they couldn’t come along, which was a bit upsetting.

“But we still had some great local prime movers and vintage trucks — everything from Model Ts to a 1926 International.”

While there wasn’t any official judges’ panel on the day, the People’s Choice award went to Nathan Miotti from Miotti’s Transport, for his pristine Kenworth T909.

Stratton said there was plenty to entertain young and old on the day, from helicopters to Clydesdale horses to face painting.

“We had earthmoving displays, blade shearing, a blacksmith display, a tractor pull competition and stationary engines.

“The kids loved it — they were allowed to climb all over the machinery, and we had a petting zoo for orphaned animals.

“Then we had a massive feed in the evening with meat supplied by Borrello Beef, one of the local farmers.”

Stratton and Emily said they decided to start the show as a way to honour transport heritage and bring the community together.

“We saw the way they look after their heritage over East, and there wasn’t much in WA,” Emily said.

“Any money we make goes back into the show and our local area.”

They thanked their team of volunteers for all their hard work each year.

“The small group of volunteers who bring the event together every year work long weeks leading up to the event, all for the shared passion of keeping the heritage alive,” Emily added.

“We can’t wait to come back next year.”

Searing heat didn’t put off trucking enthusiasts from attending this year’s Rusty Iron Rally

Vintage trucks swarmed Macksville with stunners like this Mack

A sweltering Father’s Day weekend saw nostalgia and history come alive at the 27th annual Rusty Iron Rally in Macksville, NSW, welcoming vintage and restored machinery enthusiasts from across Australia.

Despite the sizzling heat, with temperatures soaring into the mid 30s, organiser and social media manager Calissa Keough says a strong crowd made its way through the dusty gates of the local showground to check out the display of vintage cars, bikes, trucks, engines and tractors.

“Two or three generations love to come to the rally together and reminisce,” she says.

“The older generations tell their family members, ‘I used to have this truck and engine when I was a kid, I haven’t seen it for so many years.’

“I think it’s nice — we’re not losing anything, we’re keeping the history alive.”

The two-day rally was temporarily home to stationary engines, vintage tractors,

Kenworths, Macks, Internationals, Western Stars and beautiful old Bedfords, some of them close to 100 years old.

The rally traces its roots back to a small group of dedicated restorers, preserving old machinery and beginning their first rally around the 90s.

A shared passion between a few men has turned into a community that keeps growing thanks to Calissa and her family, who took over the event five years after it began, and have plenty of their own vintage machinery to show off.

“We started off with a little grey Fergie, and now between all of us, we have tractors, an engine and an old Kenworth my husband grew up in,” she adds.

Every year, a select few come home with awards for their beloved rigs.

This year the winners included Steve Aylward, whose LTL Ford was named Truck of the Show, and Brian Bunt, whose Mack

This rally means a lot to the community of Macksville, which Calissa says is clear because they come back every year.

“There's a reason they come back year after year, because we're doing something right at the rally,” she says. "It's a good, friendly rally.

“We might see these people once or twice a year at different truck shows and rallies and you get to know people and become good friends.”

Each year, the rally also serves a greater purpose.

Not only is it a way for people from all over the East Coast and central Australia to spend time and money in the NSW town helping local businesses to flourish, but Calissa ensures charities get a portion of the proceeds

This year, they supported Little Wings, an organisation that provides vital assistance to families with sick children.

“We will be donating between around four and a half thousand to Little Wings, and then we also support our local Surf Life Saving,” she says.

“They man the gates and parking for us and they do a wonderful job, so we give them a donation because they're helping out for three or four days, setting up and everything.

“Without their help, I’d have to be manning the gates!”

Managing the rally’s online presence, Calissa shares photos and videos of the event on its Facebook page, capturing every great moment or display, highlighting the community spirit and keeping everyone connected.

The Rusty Iron Rally is a testament to the beauty of nostalgia and connectiveness, preserving the stories of the past while inspiring future generations to cherish their roots.

AT HEART

The Young Show Society's 150th celebration went off with a bang

Young’s showgrounds were livened up with over 120 vehicles rolling in

There couldn’t have been a better day for the sun to shine down in Young

Blue skies livened up the Young Showgrounds to celebrate the 150th Young Show Society event, which was nothing short of a triumph.

A constant flow of people filled up the grounds with ease and while the crowd wasn’t record-breaking, the turnout surpassed average numbers, leaving Young Show president Emma Godsell and her team satisfied with a job well done.

Celebrating such a significant milestone required more than just good weather, and Emma was at the forefront of a vibrant array of activities.

“We had lots of extra entertainment, including memorabilia and heritage displays, with a trophy from 1883 housed in the pavilion and a crocheted pin cushion that was 100 years old,” she says.

“Two weeks before the event, we dedicated our broadcast box to some very special gentlemen as well.”

Emma says that for a small local show, the committee was chuffed with the results, as the event showcased 35 striking trucks, 38 cars and 48 bikes — up from just three bikes last year.

She says the success was due in large part to the dedicated team who are passionate about their roles, helping to ensure everything ran smoothly on the day.

Jimmy Cool from the TV show Heavy Tow Truckers Down Under brought his wrecker and big rotator, drawing a young crowd eager to learn about the massive machine.

“Not many people in Young have seen a rotator or a recovery truck like that before,

only those of us who are in the trucking industry would know what they look like,” Emma says.

“We’re trying to be more educational, and the kids love them because they’re so big.”

The show was packed with activities, from the truck, car and motorbike show to the tractor pull, prime lamb hoof and hook competition, cattle judging, and a Lego display for the kids.

Adding to the excitement, awards were handed out to recognise some amazing truckies and their dazzling rigs (see the category winners below).

Emma presented show co-ordinator Donald Bushby with an appreciation award for his commitment and dedication to running the truck, car and bike shows for the past few years.

Since Covid, Donald has initiated all three competitions, but 2024 was his last year organising the show as he steps down from the role.

As the day drew to a close, the excitement peaked when the fireworks were announced, wrapping up the celebrations with an invigorating bang.

“Seeing everyone get super hyped up and excited, that was my little, ‘We’ve made it’ moment, we did it!” Emma says.

But beyond the grand festivities, Emma understands the deeper significance of community gatherings like this one.

“This is the town’s show and the town’s committee and especially after Covid took this all away from us, we realised the importance of having community events.

“A lot of people I spoke to on the day told me they had caught up with people they hadn’t seen since the show last year.

“That’s what it’s all about, the community aspect, having a day out and seeing people

you wouldn’t normally see.”

She adds: “I took on this presidency because I saw what this show could be, and I really wanted to make that happen.

“Now it’s taking shape, and I am more than content with everything.”

Gold Coast Truck Show

Julie Munro and her family were chuffed to go home with "Best Bling" and "Best Paint" for these two beauts

Despite wet weather threatening to put a damper on the proceedings, this year’s Gold Coast Truck Show went off without a hitch. Truckies and their families rolled up to Mudgeeraba Showgrounds in Worongary, Queensland for two days of car, bike and truck displays, live music, food, kids’ rides and more.

Event co-ordinator Kathryn Franklin tells Deals on Wheels: “We had a lot of wet weather leading up to the show, so we were working around the clock making sure the grounds weren’t too soggy.

“Thankfully we were able to go ahead and everything went according to schedule apart from the last hour of the show on Saturday and the last half hour on Sunday.

“We managed to pull it off!”

Trucks were the star of the show on the Sunday, with a great variety of rigs and awards handed out across 13 categories.

Exhibitor Julie Munro says she and her family, who own Dumping Dirt in Munruben, were chuffed to be coming home with “Best Bling” and “Best Paint” thanks to their 2015 Kenworth 509 and 1993 Kenworth 950.

“It’s always a good weekend down there,” she says. “We love our truck shows!”

“It took us a few years to get the 950 looking the way she looks now. It was hard to find the time when [my husband] Mick drives all week so it was pretty much every weekend getting dirty. We had help from the son, Matt.”

Saturday was the “Retro Family Day” featuring monster trucks, cars and bikes, an FMX stunt crew, fireworks, and much more.

“The Monster Trucks were able to perform, which was great, but they missed the last performance on Saturday because of the weather,” Franklin explained.

“Thankfully they agreed to come back on the Sunday so everyone who was there on Sunday got to see that as a bonus!”

The team are looking forward to coming back again next year — hopefully with a bit more sunshine!

Truck Show of 2024

Online entries are now open for the 2024 HHA & Larsen’s Castlemaine Rotary Truck Show, to be held on 23-24 November.

There's plenty to see and do at the annual Castlemaine Truck Show

This show produces the best trucks

in the country and the people who support it set the benchmark in trucking

– Jon Kelly, HHA

One of the first entries to be received was from an operator in Perth keen to make the trek for the weekend and the registrations have continued to flow from truck drivers and operators keen to be a part of the 36th incarnation of the two-day event that has well and truly earned its place as one of regional Australia’s premier truck shows.

Truck Show Director, Kerry Anderson, says that it will be a jam-packed show this year.

“We have received great support from our sponsors led by Jon Kelly and Dave Larsen.

“There will be some old favourites and also some new trade and industry exhibits of interest on the main oval.

“We like to mix it up and have something fresh each year.

“We are grateful that so many people in the industry want to be part of the Castlemaine Rotary Truck Show.”

Last year the 265 entrants had collectively accumulated over 240 million kilometres on their odometers, an indication of the hard-working trucks and incredible industry experience present on the ground for the event.

That’s not counting all the other trucks that parked up just to relax with mates and enjoy the food and entertainment.

Those keen to enter their truck, but not so keen on signing up online, are able to register on the day – they just need to make sure they’re registered before the judge’s cut- off times of 2pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday.

The judges will be assessing trucks and awarding trophies across 15 categories (see next page), and there will also be a $1,000 cash prize for Truck of the Show and $500 for

Best on Ground (for Saturday).

For something extra for 2024, this year’s Castlemaine Truck Show winner will be invited to be a part of a new event for regional winners Australia-wide being organised by the Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia to coincide with the 2025 Brisbane Truck Show.

With so much at stake — there’s nothing like a trophy to put a smile on a truckie’s face — selecting the winners is an unenviable task for a panel of judges who volunteer their time and expertise over the entire weekend. Noone covers more ground than these unsung heroes.

Truck of the Show 2022 winner Jeromey Edwards from JBE Truck Repairs proved that anyone with a well-turned-out truck, like his restored 2008 Kenworth K108, has a chance to catch the judges’ eyes.

“I think what the judges liked about my truck was that it was a little bit older but looked brand new. I think they appreciated that it takes a hell of a lot more work to bring up an older truck to that standard.”

Jeromey is paying his good fortune forward from 2022 back and sponsoring the Engine Bay category for the second year.

“I will be looking at cleanliness, tidiness and attention to detail,” he says.

While the trucks are clearly the stars of the show, Rotary Castlemaine conducts the event to raise funds for the community through ticket and food sales.

“We are so grateful to the trucking industry and the 150 community volunteers assist at the show. It is a combined industry and community effort that allows us to support so many good causes,” Kerry says.

Mad Max’s

MACK

Mad Max fanatic Adrian Bennett has built up a collection of trucks and cars from his favourite film — and they’re all on display in a tiny desert town

Words: Kayla Walsh

Images: Adrian Bennett

Adrian with some of his prized possessions

Adrian left behind his life in Yorkshire to set up this amazing passion project

There are few Mad Max fans as devoted as Adrian Bennett — so much so that he uprooted his life in the United Kingdom to move to Silverton in NSW, the tiny Outback town where the second movie was filmed. In Silverton, which is about 25km from Broken Hill, Adrian and his wife Linda have set up a Mad Max 2 museum.

It boasts a wide range of relics from the film — including the original F100 “Snake Truck” and a replica of the Mack that the villain of the movie, Wez, is sitting on the front of when he is killed.

“I first saw Mad Max 2 way back in 1982, when I was 18 years old,” Adrian remembers.

“My wife and I first came on holiday to Australia in 2004 to do the sites of both the films in Victoria, then Broken Hill.

“We just fell in love with Broken Hill.”

The idea for the museum stemmed from Adrian’s passion for the movies, but also because it seemed like the area was missing a trick.

“It didn't really make sense to me that you had a place known as the Hollywood of the Outback, where you've got all these big films that have been made over the years, but there was nothing really for tourists or visitors to see,” he says.

Adrian and Linda moved from Yorkshire to Adelaide in 2006, and then to Silverton three years later.

Getting

the show on the road

Once they found a suitable property for their new museum, it was time to start sourcing vehicles, props, costumes and other items from Mad Max 2

The attraction opened in 2010, but Adrian says it’s been a long journey to build the collection up to where it is today — and it’s still growing.

“You can’t start at the top with something like this,” Adrian says. “It has taken 14 years to get where we are now, and I’m still adding to the collection.

“These pieces are rare and you can’t find them on Ebay or places like that.”

“You are really relying on people who worked on the film, or people who know people who worked on the film, to get in touch with you.

A year or two after the museum opened, Adrian was contacted by Bruce Lamshed, the supervising sound mixer from Mad Max 2 Bruce had the original boomerang used by ‘The Feral Kid’ in the movie, as well as the music box he had.

“Bruce had been given the boomerang and the music box to record the sound from them in a studio, because they are too quiet otherwise,” Adrian explains.

“He had them for 30 years before he called us, and I asked him how much he wanted for them.

“After I picked myself up off the floor when he told me how much, we managed to strike a deal and I went and got the items.”

Then about nine years ago, Adrian got permission to excavate two sites where the crew of Mad Max 2 had buried items from the movie.

“Instead of the crew bringing things back to Broken Hill to dump them, they buried them — out of laziness, really.

“We found some great stuff out there, from mannequins to the shield from the flame thrower and the black armband worn by Wez.

“We even found a codpiece that was worn by one of the bad guys, that exploded in a deleted scene!”

The Mack

One of the highlights of the museum is a black R600 Mack with orange stripes — a replica of the rig used in the pivotal scene in which baddie Wez finally meets his demise.

The Mack found its way into Adrian’s hands through the owner of a company in Broken Hill.

“We’d got to know this guy and he rang me up one day and asked if I would be interested in an R600 Mack like they used in the film, which he had been using as a yard truck.

“I said I would love to take it but money was a little tight, but he didn’t want anything for it.

“He actually said ‘If you don’t want it, I’m going to dig a hole in the yard and bury it!’”

The truck was still registered and running perfectly, so the owner drove it to Silverton and dropped it off at the museum.

It was great timing, because just a few days

The museum is running out of space, but Adrian managed to squeeze in the R600, which was painted up to look exactly like the one in the movie

It’s not looking good for Wez...

The collection has grown a lot over the years

DEALS Feature

later, Adrian received a visit from none other than Vernon Wells, the actor who played Wez in the movie.

original

Most of the items were purchased from or donated by people involved in the film

“There’s a famous scene from the end of the movie, where everyone thinks Wez has been killed because he’s fallen off the front of the truck,” he says.

“Then he climbs up over the front of the truck again and tries to grab the Feral Kid on the bonnet.

“His friends who were visiting the museum with him asked him to recreate the scene, and he did, which was fantastic.”

The truck was white when it arrived, but

Adrian had it painted up to match the look of its silver screen counterpart.

Not long after that, a kind visitor to the museum offered to make a custom cow catcher for the truck.

“He said he wanted to contribute to the museum, and he made this incredible cow catcher for the truck, that bolts on to the bull bar.

“It’s just like the one you see in the movie.”

Then it was time for the final touches –mannequins representing Max, The Feral Kid and Wez — and it was ready for display.

“I never thought in a million years we’d get a R600 Mack,” says Adrian. “I am delighted to have it in the collection.”

The Snake Truck

Adrian was also lucky enough to get hold of the original Ford F100 “Snake Truck” that was used throughout the film.

It had been saved by the same person who kept the famous Ford Falcon XB GT Pursuit Special V8 Interceptor from the movie — Derek Wyness.

Wyness was part of the production team for Mad Max 2, as well as playing a role on screen — a character also called Derek.

Many years ago, he came to visit the museum with his daughter, and Adrian forced himself to ask him about displaying the vehicles.

“He was a lovely fella, but he was also a big bloke who looked like Grizzly Adams, and I

The
Snake Truck

was really nervous to approach him,” Adrian says.

“Eventually I plucked up the courage to say, ‘You know, you’re quite welcome to display the vehicles you have here in the museum — any time you want.’

“He just said, ‘Thanks very much, Adrian,’ and that was it, he kind of ended the conversation.”

Adrian never heard anything from him about the subject again, and Wyness sadly passed away in 2020.

“After he died, his ex-wife came to see us and asked if we would like the vehicles,” he says.

“It was one of those things — normally when someone gifts or donates something from the film, I’m doing cartwheels with excitement.

“But because Derek had passed away, it was a very bittersweet moment.”

The engine of the F100, which Adrian doesn’t believe is the original engine used in the movie, hadn’t been started in 20 years.

Thankfully she was very easy to get going, after the addition of a new battery and a few checks.

“It got a few knocks in the movie, because

some of the stunts involved it bashing into the truck,” he says. “But it still fired up.”

Adrian says the truck faded quite a lot in the years Wyness owned it, as it had been out on display on his property in Broken Hill.

“Derek had the F100 and the Interceptor out in the open, with a fence around them, so people could come and look at them,” he says.

“That was until one of the extra fuel tanks was stolen from the back of the Interceptor and Derek decided to move the vehicles, tucking them away on his property where noone could see them unless they asked him.

“Thankfully we’ve got them under cover now, out of the sun, but where people get to see them every day.”

Adrian has no regrets over moving from Yorkshire to a dusty town in the middle of the Outback, on the other side of the world.

“Some people say to us, ‘How can you live here?’

“But we love it. We get to meet lots of tourists during the day, and then come 4.30pm, you can hear a pin drop.

“Mad Max is such a big part of Australian culture now, and I love that I get to share my passion with everyone who stops by.”

REDISCOVERING

Roots

Sean Denny’s rediscovery of his dad’s 1953 International R190 led him on a 20-year odyssey to get it back

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

Images: Sean Denny

The lovingly restored 1953 International R190 has been popular on the truck show circuit

For Sean Denny, reclaiming his father’s beloved 1953 International R190 was more than a nostalgic endeavour; it was a passionate journey that spanned over two decades.

The truck was used for general scrap and originally belonged to his father 25 years ago, but times got tough, and he was forced to sell his beloved rig.

So began the long, persistent search for the charming International — until Sean finally tracked it down ten years later.

“I drove out to the seller, had a look at it and said, ‘Right, how much?’

“He said a certain price, so I told him I’d be back that Friday to purchase it.

“I rang him Friday, and found out he sold it to somebody else!

“But I kind of knew the bloke that bought it, so I started hassling him for few years.”

Ten years after that, Sean found himself near the owner’s house.

So he decided to go back to the same guy and give buying the truck another shot,

explaining that it was originally his father’s and had sentimental value.

He was met with the news that the owner wasn’t interested in selling it.

He tried one more time, coming back with a stack of cash, but was again shown the door.

But being told no wasn’t going to stop him from reclaiming what was rightfully his.

“I got sick and tired of going over there,” he says.

“The fourth time I went, I said to him, ‘Look, this is the last time I’m coming. I'm going home with a new car for my girlfriend, I’m taking this International, and I ain't coming back.’

“I got it there and then.”

Sean admits he paid a lot of money for the truck, but he wasn’t going to miss out on a golden opportunity to get it back.

The rig had originally come from Lilydale in the 50s, working as a bitumen tanker before it carted tar around the Yarra Valley.

A different owner then converted the truck from petrol to diesel and modified it to become more usable.

The International on the back of the Ford trailer

The ol’ rig carting logs in the early 80s In the mid 80s, Sean’s dad purchased the truck in this form

The rig was painted green for quite some time

Discovered again by Sean 20 years later in Deniliquin – but he missed out on taking it home that time
The truck became officially his on this day

The rig then hauled timber, and then earthmoving gear, before getting sold to another gentleman in Lilydale.

Sean’s father spotted the rig on the road one day and wanted to buy it.

At that time, the owner didn’t know how to drive it and wasn’t sure what he was going to use it for, so it was a deal.

After Sean’s father, the International has lived all around Victoria and parts of NSW, from Bendigo and Echuca to Deniliquin (where Sean first discovered it), then to Cobram and lastly back to Sean in Healesville.

“I know about six blokes that have got their licenses in this truck in the 80s, it’s got a lot of history,” he says.

Sean’s memories of the rig stretch back to when he was only eight years old, watching it weave through the streets of Healesville where he grew up and then riding around in it once he was old enough.

Despite never having been restored, Sean has lovingly maintained the truck, ensuring it remains “period correct” — adding modern touches but keeping its historical essence intact.

“It was red and white when I got it,” he says. “I’ve tidied it up a lot, but I don’t like modifying too much.

“You can try to dress them up a little, but keep it period correct, that’s the goal.

“I put tube tyres back on it, did the mudguards and taillights and made it virtually driveable.”

Sean followed in the footsteps of his father, becoming a truckie himself and now owning several other trucks which he enjoys restoring and displaying.

“I own six trucks for display,” he says. “I like Louisvilles and R model Macks.

“I restore them, drive them around for a bit, get sick of them, get another truck and then restore that one.”

His International is also used as a display truck, which he takes around on the back of a Ford trailer that he bought specifically for that purpose.

Despite having his own unique fleet, Sean’s father’s truck holds a special place in his heart as he says it holds some of his dad’s history. His dad is still going strong, living in a home with Sean’s mother.

Sean views the truck as connecting him to his father and his boyhood. As he takes the truck through the familiar roads of his childhood, he is keeping memories and shared experiences alive.

BIG RIGS

A vibrant community of people who share a love for remote-controlled trucks reignite childhood magic through Little Big Rigs Sydney.

A small group of truck enthusiasts began gathering in a car park or scout hall back in 2009 and before long, they picked up speed and invitations to events and truck shows began to roll in.

Group organiser James Sligar’s journey into the world of remote-controlled trucks began with a childhood fascination.

“Growing up in Wollongong, I had always wanted to be part of the Illawarra Convoy,” he says.

“But then I started building trucks myself and I’d put photos of them up on my socials.

“A member of the group tagged the organiser of the event at the time, and he contacted me.

“So, since 2007, I’ve been part of Little Big Rigs.”

Today, Little Big Rigs boasts a diverse membership of 50 people, ranging from James's son, who is just five years old, to retirees who share their knowledge and passion.

These truck models are bought in a kit or customised to the member’s liking, adding a personal touch.

On average, completing a full customised build of a truck could take three to four weeks.

“It takes a couple of days to build the chassis, and from there you start painting all the bits and pieces like the guard, fenders and cab,” he says.

“That might take about a week, and then you put the cab together.”

James’s Scania 770 took him nearly three

Little Big Rigs creates a world of its own

This impressive model could be mistaken for the real thing!

It can take from one to 18 months to fully complete a model truck

months to build, because there were so many bits and pieces that needed to be glued together, and he did some customisation too.

“I added flashing lights, and you can get a sound system for them,” he explains.

“One guy in the club built a model that took him 18 months.

“He has an SD card that he puts into the truck to play music and chatter, making it

sound like people are talking.

“It’s just unbelievable what people can do these days!”

Among James’s collection of 17 model trucks, including an Actros and Volvo FH16, it’s his Kenworth tipper that has stolen his heart.

“It’s a one of a kind, especially with all the airbrushing that’s been done,” he says.

The group has a packed schedule of truck shows ahead of it, including the Sydney Truck Fest and the Fairfield Easter Fair.

At the shows, they set up an elaborate display, including a 20 by 20 road network, complete with a BP fuel station and bridges.

“Depending on the venue, we bring about 20 trucks at minimum,” he says.

James is active on social media, sharing the group’s adventures through his YouTube channel, ‘RC Trucking with Jimmy’ and TikTok @JamesSligar, showcasing the trucks

and enjoyment that comes with the hobby.

“Editing it all together can get really frustrating, but you end up pretty amazed with the end result, so it’s worth it.”

For James, being part of Little Big Rigs isn’t all about the trucks, but the community and friendships made along the way.

“The social side is great, and seeing the looks on the kids’ faces as they come up to us thinking what we do is pretty cool.

“You can see it blows their mind what we can do with trucks these days.”

KENWORTHS

Imy Deen’s restored Kenworths aren’t just visual masterpieces — one in particular holds a valuable message

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

The three restored Kenworths stole the spotlight at the Casino Truck Show

Rolling canvases of personal expression, cultural tribute, and social advocacy.

In a world where the road often symbolises isolation, Imy Deen’s work ensures that his trucks, and the messages they carry, create connections and change.

In the heart of Ipswich, Imy’s company HMT Bulk Services has a fleet of 10 trucks that tell a story that goes beyond their metal and paint.

Imy’s entrance into transport was inevitable, following in his father’s footsteps.

His early immersion came from handson experience, including a trade in heavy fabrication engineering.

This foundational knowledge proved invaluable when he transitioned from the workshop to the open road, manoeuvring road trains and engaging in various haulage tasks.

Imy’s passion for trucks led him to a personal project that would turn heads and tug at heartstrings — the restoration of his Kenworth T900.

“We stripped the truck back to nothing,” he says. “We got all brand-new brakes and bearings on it.

“The truck was originally red, so we fully re-sprayed it, redid the chassis and re-sprayed that, sandblasted it, painted it, and then painted the cab a pearl white colour.”

The result is a stunning display of craftsmanship, featuring a gleaming white cab and a unique colour scheme of green, gold and silver.

“I’ve always been a real fan of pearl white, and I really like green and gold, keeping it the Aussie way. The silver’s there to break it up a little bit.

“We airbrushed the back wall, we did the doors, the air cleaners, and on top of the bar.”

The front of the rig is just as impressive as the back, featuring a homage to music legends, with a ripped open wall that reveals famous rappers including Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Easy-E, Ice Cube, Biggie and Tupac.

The striking image is surrounded by smoke,

lightning strikes, a black convertible and two growling dogs, making the rig an undeniably attention-grabbing piece.

Imy’s company name, HMT, is written on the rappers’ caps and license plate of the car, with the words, ‘Legends Never Die’ laid across the bottom of the graphic.

“The truck’s a legend and so are these artists,” Imy says. “That's why we called it Legends Never Die.’”

Imy’s Kenworth 950 is a nod to Death Row Records, which was a groundbreaking record label in the 90s, celebrating its enduring influence on rap and hip-hop culture.

“This truck is named ‘Legends Forever’, as it has Snoop Dogg, Tupac and Suge Knight, the owner of Death Row Records.”

His favourite out of his fleet, though, is his restored rig for men’s mental health.

It sends a message that goes beyond the highway, with an intricate graphic of Crocodile Dundee with a reptile around his neck and a water buffalo.

“It’s got ‘It ain't weak to speak’ on the side, along with our motto. It’s a reminder that no matter what you're going through, you can rise above it.”

The side of the truck displays a series of tips on how to support men with their mental

health, including, “encourage your mates when they share”, “acknowledge when they are in a difficult situation” and “don’t be afraid to ask, ‘R U OK?’ more than once”.

The rolling tribute to mental health also highlights the sad statistic that more than six men die by suicide in Australia every day.

Anyone who finds themselves isolated and struggling might see the truck while going about their day and be reminded that vulnerability is strength.

“I’ve had a lot of mates in the industry take their life, it’s a lonely road on the highway,” Imy says.

“If I can save one life just by putting it out there, then that means the world to me.”

Imy’s meticulous work was recognised at the Casino Truck Show, managing to snag trophies for Great Eight and Best Paint Scheme in testament to his trucks’ design and creativity.

“We didn’t expect to win, we took the working trucks how they were to the show, so it’s a good feeling.”

But Imy’s fleet isn’t just for show; these trucks are hard at work across Australia, from civil earthworks to grain hauling.

It’s clear that Imy’s journey in transport reflects a deep passion for his trucks and his cause, with an aim to help others.

It’s no surprise these rigs won Great Eight and Best Paint Scheme at the Casino Truck Show

Ross Transport aims to change perspectives on truckies with their vibrant and cheerful truck designs

An intricate design of superheroes easily catches eyes

As you chase the continuous white line along the dull, grey highway, you come to the realisation that driving can be a bit boring when there’s not much to look at.

Cue Ross Transport’s fleet of happy-looking trucks, rigs with the world’s most renowned animations and characters jumping out to grasp the attention of all road users and passengers.

Ross Transport are not just known for delivering cargo and freight; they’re famous for their outstanding-looking rigs, and rightfully so.

colours and cartoons — including the beloved Bluey, Looney Tunes, Disney, The Jetsons, The Flintstones and superheroes like Thor, Iron Man, Marvel and The Avengers.

Owner of her own transport company, and manager for Ross Transport, True RossSawrey says these designs are what sets the company apart from others.

“People see a truck on the road and think, ‘It’s just a truck,’ but when they see our trucks go past, they think, ‘Oh my God, look at that truck!” she says.

“That’s why my dad started these different

lively fleet can put a smile on anyone’s face

different, to be unique, to capture interest.”

Ross Transport want the public to perceive truckies in a positive way.

“I think it's really important that people don’t think of truckies as big and scary, because most drivers, and the ones that we have, are really kind people that will stop for a chat and blow the horn to say hi.

“It creates a relationship between the public, our drivers and our industry, which is essential.

“Australia would quite literally stop without trucks and the industry gets a terrible name when it shouldn't, so simple things like having cool trucks does help.”

True recalls how the lively fleet evolved from a few simple designs into an exciting spectacle.

“Dad originally started the designs, he’s very eccentric,” she says.

First, they did three dark blue trucks to celebrate their 40th anniversary.

Next up was a bright pink rig named ‘Truely Frantastic’ after True and her grandma Frances, in honour of women in transport

and the contribution they have made to the industry.

“From there, we started all the cartoon and superhero trucks, and now myself and other drivers have come up with the Autism Awareness Truck and Bluey, which I really pushed for.

“I have three-year-old twins that love Bluey, and I have a massive love for Disney, so the ideas come from us, but our signwriter is the one that puts it all together.”

Western Stars are mainly used for the graphics at Ross Transport, with True’s father Alan Ross into the older style cartoons like The Jetsons and The Flintstones.

Nowadays, True and the company want to focus on newer animations like Moana, Frozen and Encanto for any upcoming vehicles.

“We've been thinking our next truck should have The Powerpuff Girls, but we just throw ideas out there, see who likes them, what gets the most interest and we go from there.”

True reflects on the positive feedback the

True says this beloved Bluey truck is one of their most popular, and for good reason

Ross Transport keep up their positive reputation with outstanding trucks like this

graphics have received from passersby on the street.

“Multiple times a week, we get messages on our Facebook page, to our website and even phone calls from people who have seen one of our trucks.

“They say how much they love them and how it made their kids’ day.”

Out of Ross’ lively fleet of 80 trucks, one is decorated for a great cause, autism awareness.

“Often people will say ‘My child’s autistic and has just seen your truck pass, and it made them feel special and welcome.’

“Our drivers also get recognition, so they’ll

beep the horn back, or stop and speak to people to get a photo.

“That creates a great reputation for our business, but also the industry, and that’s probably the best thing about my job.”

With family at the heart of the business, twin Kenworth Legend trucks were ordered and are set to arrive at the same time — one white and blue, the other white and pink.

The trucks will be named ‘Kaos Chris’ and ‘Chatty Charlie’ after True’s twins.

“We have the painted graphic at the back of the truck with Charlie as a fairy, which mimics a painting she has in her room that she adores.

True

twins Charlie and Chris

“We’ve named the truck ‘Chatty Charlie’ because she just doesn’t stop talking,” she chuckles.

“Chris is on a balance bike because he’s absolutely chaotic, hence the name Kaos.”

“The trucks that have been the most meaningful to design would be the trucks more personalised to our family.

“We are a family business, and we all work together.”

From the moment True was born in 1996, she was steeped in the world of transport, the legacy of her father’s business, established in 1975, serving as her backdrop.

“I’ve grown up around trucks. I used to come into work with dad on a weekend, on school holidays, and then when I finished school, I started working here part-time while I went to uni.

“I developed a love for it more and more, so I stayed working for dad. Then a few years later, I bought my own truck and started my own business as well.”

True and her father share a very close bond, being family and colleagues at the same time.

“I've learnt everything from him, he's taught me all I know,” she says.

“He's got a very chill attitude to life.

“I like that, because I'm very highly strung, but I've even learnt the manager and business side of things, how he runs the business and how he gives people chances.”

Adding to their already full workload, Ross Transport is having their first ever Open Day in October at the Port Kembla yard, giving adults and kids the chance to go for a drive around the block in one of their famous trucks.

Ross Transport are in-bound for the i98FM Illawarra Convoy, with a gracious sponsorship provided by many local companies, not only

allowing their first open day to become a reality, but also helping them raise funds for the lead truck bid.

“We get a lot of people asking to go for truck rides on the weekend, and some of my drivers are lovely enough that they do come in and take people for a drive,” she says.

“But I thought ‘Huh, I wonder if I could turn this into a way that we could raise money.’

“So, I put the idea out to Facebook and asked if anyone would attend an open day if we had one to raise funds, and it got shared around.”

The post did very well, racking up 15,000 views and receiving a lot of positive feedback.

A classic Aussie barbeque and a stationary truck that people can climb in and out of will be provided at the event.

“We're going to have a blind spot awareness truck, so people can realise how big these trucks are and what limited vision we have when we drive them.

“Hopefully people will learn to drive safer around us, because there's definitely not enough training for light vehicles around heavy vehicles.”

There is set to be 15-20 trucks on display or performing truck rides, with all funds raised on the day going towards their lead truck bid for the Illawarra Convoy, which the business has been involved with for 20 years now.

“We have about 35 to 40 trucks that go to the convoy each year.

“We’re very excited, and the number of drivers and staff that have volunteered and come on board has been awesome.”

Ross’ happy fleet does more than transport goods. It’s a symbol of joy, connection and a change of perception, inviting communities to see beyond the chrome and steel, into the heart of a family legacy that’s as colourful as the designs they drive.

Thanks to this power duo, trucks have never looked so good!

TRUCKING

Lifesaver

The world’s first Automated Cone Truck will help save lives on Australian roads

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

Images: Ride Free

According to the National Road Safety Partnership Program, each year one traffic controller is killed on our roads and 100 more are injured.

Tragedies like these are preventable. Cue the world’s first Australian-built Automated Cone Truck (ACT), developed by Brisbane’s Arrowes Roading Safety.

Arrowes’ executive director Lea Ea initiated the development of the ACT to find a solution to the alarming number of fatalities and serious injuries among traffic controllers, while also reducing manual handling and traffic set-up times.

Lea says these numbers must go down, as each life lost is one too many.

“Research by Safe Work Australia found 63 per cent of fatalities on worksites were caused by being hit by moving vehicles,” she says.

The seed for the cone truck was planted in 2014 with the development of the eSTOP, a portable traffic signal system designed to replace traditional traffic controllers who often worked in risky conditions.

This innovative vision was born from tragedy, ignited by an accident in which a former member of parliament lost his wife while she was working as a traffic controller.

Lea says the eSTOP was a game changer,

The Automated Cone Truck in its full form, with the grippers just doing their job placing cones
The executive director of Arrowes, Lea Ea

allowing traffic workers to do their job remotely, away from the road.

“We transformed the traffic lantern into a portable item that could be remotely controlled by a traffic controller, instead of someone standing in the middle of road with a stop sign,” she says.

“The worker is able to control the traffic from a distance, which led to saving lives.”

In 2018, a phone call highlighted the impact of the eSTOP – the equipment had done its job and saved someone’s life, which sparked another journey of innovation.

The Automated Cone Truck is an Isuzu 140/120-260 Auto LWB and was built to be used easily by truck drivers, who only have to program the spacing between each cone.

A cone can be deployed every seven seconds, placed at intervals of three to 24 metres while travelling at speeds of up to 16 kilometres an hour.

“In terms of the mechanics behind it, the user has nothing to do with it, but from a development point of view we have made it so simple,” Lea says.

“We want it to eliminate the number of moving components. This is important because we want longevity of use and not constant mechanical issues that would result in us having to maintain it all the time.”

Mechanically, this is how the system works: the gantry system picks up three cones at a time, placing them on the conveyor which will move left or right, depending on whether the operator wants to drop the cones on the left or right side of the truck.

There are two grippers on either side and depending on which one you’re deploying, it will grip the cone from the conveyor and

place it on the road. With the development of the truck taking place in Arrowes Roading Safety’s workshop, everything worked perfectly – until the trial in 2020 when the grippers slipped.

“The environment was very different compared to a workshop environment, as we now had the debris, dust, oil, wet weather and all the greases, so it slipped through,” she says.

“We watered down the grippers with a hose, and nothing happened, but in the trial, it slipped, so we improved on that.

“We also spent quite a lot of time refining the gripper, so now it's 100 per cent.

“It's got two gripping systems at the top and middle now, therefore there’s no slippage anymore.”

The team sought feedback from users on how they implemented the trucking system, as well as the Human Machine Interface (HMI) which also had to be modified.

“We learnt a lot about what it's like to sit in the truck, thinking about how truckies actually use the system in a real-life environment which gave us a lot of insight.

“We spent two years after that refining and developing, trialling and testing it before we could commercially sell it.”

When Deals on Wheels asked about the impact the ACT will have on the community, Lea listed reason upon reason.

“Thanks to this project, we’ve learnt that they've eliminated 1,200 tonnes of manual handling from just one project.

“You can imagine what that means from a manual handling in long-term injury point of view, like arthritis or back strains.”

The project has not only improved safety but also demonstrates Australia’s

Lea and her team of experts

According to the Australian National University, road fatalities cost the Australian economy $33 billion in 2017 alone.

The ACT hasn’t gone without recognition, however, winning the Victorian Major Transport Infrastructure Authority’s award for innovation and the Director General Award for Safety innovations in 2022, as well as the National Safety Award (NSCA) in 2023.

The truck drives at 16kms/h while dropping the cones.

(Inset) This truck is saving one life a year minimum, as well as avoiding hundreds of injuries

potential when it comes to innovation and manufacturing.

As a small business, Lea says she and the team took on the project to showcase Australia’s capabilities.

“We don't want to be like every other company that says, ‘I've got a problem, let's look overseas and find a solution.’

“We realised, there's a problem and we want to solve it, so why don't we develop it, show our capability and then export it?”

Before her job at Arrowes, Lea worked in Singapore for 16 years, supplying hearing aids to 24 countries around the world.

“When I came back to Australia and started working, I realised that we don't have any manufacturing here and I was quite disappointed.

“We don't do value creation, so for me to be able to showcase our capability and our relevance, and to be able to innovate, produce, create this kind of value, was amazing for me.

“I had guys coming up to me saying they wouldn't have had the opportunity to get this amount of hands-on development experience and to explore, research and develop a product like this in Australia, the way it has been previously.

“We lose a lot of talent and capabilities because we don't offer this kind of opportunity locally – everyone sources it overseas.”

The ACT is also a finalist in Moreton Bay City Council Business & Innovations Awards for 2024.

“It’s important for us to have that recognition, it's affirming, and we all need that confirmation,” Lea says.

“We believe in what we do, but to be recognised by the community is another level. It’s the satisfaction, the reward you feel because of your hard work.

“We knew we had a purpose. We knew we would be making a difference but doing so and then getting recognition for it that is very satisfying and encourages us to continue to develop.”

Lea says the ACT won’t stop revolutionising and work will continuously be made to improve it.

“The iPhone was big and heavy in the 90s. Thirty years on, it’s smaller and more intelligent. We envision the automated cone truck will also develop this way.”

Looking ahead, Arrowes is not resting on its laurels. The next project, named ASSIST (Arrowes Smart Interactive Safety Technology), promises to further revolutionize safety with advanced features like speed alerts for road workers and hazard detection in blind spots.

This new initiative aims to build on the lessons learned from the ACT, pushing the boundaries of road safety technology.

Barry Hunt has got the best of both worlds with a powerful new SAR Legend kitted out to look like a vintage model

The tow truck has ‘Still Recovering’ written on the side – we love a good pun!

What do you do when you want the benefits of a new truck, with the look of an old one?

Ask Barry Hunt from New South Wales operation GRS Towing, who has transformed his Limited Edition 2024 Kenworth SAR Legend into the retro rig of his dreams.

Kenworth’s iconic W900SAR was built and sold in Australia from 1975 to 1987. The first Kenworth model that was designed, engineered and manufactured specifically for the conditions Down Under, it built up quite a following amongst truckies.

Decades after the W900SAR stopped production, it made a special edition comeback to celebrate 50 years of Kenworth manufacturing in Australia.

Orders for the new SAR Legend were open for just one day — July 8, 2021 — and during those 24 hours, over 700 units were sold.

Barry’s rig was one of those units, and now it’s finally in his hands after a long wait.

“It was originally going to be a replacement tow truck, and we were looking at an 18-month wait,” he says.

“It was going to be delivered around March 2023, then that got pushed to October 2023, and we eventually got it in January 2024.

“That backlog in deliveries after Covid was crazy — it's not so bad now.

“We weren’t in a hurry earlier on, but by the time it got to mid-2023, work had picked up and we really needed that truck!”

Despite the urgency to get the truck on the road, Barry wasn’t giving up on his vision for it — so a few more changes needed to be made after it was delivered.

“We wanted the truck to maintain an oldschool feel,” he says.

“I really like that classic look — it reminds me of when I was a kid, looking at the trucks going around.

“I didn’t want the truck to be like all the others on the road.

“In New South Wales, there’s no Legends as a tow truck, and particularly none that have that old-school look.”

Towing transformation

Before getting to the aesthetics of the rig, it needed to be transformed into a tow truck.

The equipment — a detachable heavy underlift towing unit — was ordered from the US, making it the fourth detachable tow truck the company has built.

“We have other units that are permanently mounted, but we’ve always maintained one or two of these detachable units because of their versatility,” Barry explains.

“The truck could still be used as a prime mover or a loaded trailer, or it can be used for towing broken-down vehicles.

“When you order a $850k truck, it’s got to be able to do a few things or you’re sweating on it on a quiet day!”

Behind the sleeper, there’s a side recovery unit, which helps to make the truck scale weight-wise.

“The big salvage legs are right behind the sleeper, whereas on the larger, longer trucks, your hydraulic legs that might anchor you in the ground while you’re winching are located right at the tail board.

“That means the truck isn’t as well-balanced with its weights, because you’re trying to lift something heavy at the back — the towed vehicle — but you’ve also got this huge steel structure right at the back.

“Having the side recovery unit behind the sleeper puts more weight at the front, which allows the truck to be shorter but do the same job as a longer truck.”

The truck’s shorter length means it can easily get around city streets and other areas where long trucks can struggle.

Barry has put a restored bull bar from a 90s Kenworth on the front of the SAR Legend, to add to the vintage look
Barry is proud as punch of his shiny new rig

Although the truck is brandnew, Barry wanted to keep that old-school feel

Having the side recovery unit behind the sleeper puts more weight at the front, which allows the truck to be shorter but do the same job as a longer truck

“It’s handy on back streets and getting in and out of auction lots,” Barry adds.

When GRS Towing were deciding on the specs of the build, they needed to maximise the weight on the front end.

“We ensured that the front end was rated to over 7.5 tonnes, so it’s got a 9-tonne front axle,” he says.

“It’s got eight-tonne front springs and an 8.2 tonne steering box in it.

“With all that equipment and the tyres — 385s on the steer — in New South Wales we are allowed to 7.5 tonnes on the steer axle because it’s a tow truck.

“It’s a bit of a pocket rocket!”

Old

school cool

Although Barry’s truck is brand new, he didn’t want it to look that way.

“Building the SAR Legend was all about keeping the nostalgia of that model,” he says.

“We wanted to retain some of its heritage.”

Barry likes the convenience of the cabin’s modern features, like cup holders and air suspension seats.

On the other hand, Kenworth has kept it old school by only offering manual transmission, with no electric windows or central locking.

To add to the vintage look, Barry has put a restored bull bar from a 90s Kenworth on the front.

“They don’t build bull bars in that way anymore,” he explains.

“Sometimes when people see the truck,

When GRS Towing were deciding on the specs of the build, they needed to maximise the weight on the front end

The SAR hitting the road

they think the whole thing is restored because of the bull bar.”

Barry also wanted to hark back to the days before LED lights.

The Hulk – for when you need some serious strength

The bright colours are always a hit with kids

“We wanted lights on the truck that were period correct, and we came across some new stock of Narva Bull halogen lights.

“We fitted them in the bull bar as well.”

Gaining traction

Barry says the truck has attracted a lot of attention on the road and on the GRS Towing Facebook page.

“When we took the truck off the red carpet, we made a 25-second video of it coming off and put some music to it.

“Within about four days, we had 65,000 views on the video!”

The truck has built up quite a following already — because of its unusual build, but also because people just like shiny new gear.

“It’s the journey,” he says.

“For a lot of people, trucking is not just driving a truck, it’s a lifestyle.

“It’s the story — from where we’ve come from to where we are today.”

Plans for the truck

The driver of the new truck previously owned his own mechanical workshop, but has decided to get out of the game.

“He started off with some other trucks and he’s pretty good, so I told him he was in the running for this new one.

“I’ve basically given him the go-ahead to buy whatever he wants to give the truck its final fit-out, to get it the way he needs it to be.”

The truck will be based in Western Sydney, doing about 120,000 kilometres a year.

When Deals spoke to Barry, the truck had only been out on two jobs, but he was very happy with its performance so far.

“So far it’s proven very valuable,” he says. “We’re excited about this one.”

SWEEP

Just a decade ago, Samantha Ruggeri was a dance teacher studying for a diploma. Now, she’s the queen of the Kleening Zone in WA

Words: Warren Aitken

Images: Warren Aitken

Sam’s familiar smile is a welcome greeting to all those coming in for a bit of a tidy up in Perth’s Kleening Zone truck wash. Take note of the huge stack of micro fibres drying behind Sam, the tools of the trade are on high rotation

This month’s ‘Woman in Trucking’ feature is going to be focused away from the driver’s seat, as our central character doesn’t even hold a heavy vehicle license, yet. However, she plays a pivotal role in an area very dear to the heart of most truck drivers – the ‘looking sharp and shiny’ arena.

I am focusing on Samantha Ruggeri, a young lady who, up until 10 years ago, admitted she had no idea what the bonneted and cabover terminology meant in reference to truck and wasn’t able to point out an A-double Mack unit or know what a Kenworth Road train was. Growing up, Sam’s expertise lay in teaching and dancing, a far cry from the dirt and detailing that now encompasses her life. However, before Sam hit her 20s, she got introduced to the world of trucks and transport and the addiction took hold. Ten years later, she is eying up the idea of getting her license while running one of Perth’s busiest truck washing operations and being a Zen-like master of all things soap. She is the go-to lady when it comes to making a showpiece shine.

In order to introduce the lovely Samantha Ruggeri into this tale, I need to set the scene a little. I had just arrived in Perth, having driven from Brisbane. The first 90 per cent of the 4500km trip had been great weather, meaning I retained the shiny wheels and pristinely polished paint and had only the inconvenience of surfeit of suicidal bugs to contend with. That’s fine, I had my bottle of Bowden’s Bugger Off and Jax Wax Body shine, so I had been able to keep my truck looking pretty damn good. However, the final 10 per cent of the trip involved rain, inappropriately located rain, to be exact. By that I mean it only rained around the same sections of road that the big WA quad tippers all entered the highway from their stockpiles and quarries, leaving kilometres of dirt, which turned into kilometres of dirty brown road spray. This resulted in my road train looking like it had spent a week bush bashing in the Pilbara. I did not have enough micro-fibres to rescue the shine hidden under a layer of WA dirt, so while I was waiting to reload in Perth, I popped into the Kleening Zone and booked

the big rig in for a little TLC, which is where I met Sam.

What convinced me to sit Sam down and learn a little more about her was when I discovered she wasn’t just the smiley face that answers the phones and books the truck in. She was the person that created the deep dive questionnaire you need to pass just to get a booking, a questionnaire that rivals any onsite induction course. It’s a questionnaire that shows how committed to cleanliness the Kleening Zone team are, and it reflects the depth to which Sam’s passion for the transport industry has hit.

Sam is a truck washing guru. What started as a part-time job has now become a Certificate in Shine for the young lady running one of Perth’s largest and busiest truck washes. She is also someone that, up until a decade ago, was teaching a classroom of five-year-olds how to dance while gaining her teaching diploma. Now she has been bitten by the transport bug and has become the sovereign supreme of soap.

“I started working here about 10 years ago,” Sam says.

By ‘here’ she is referring to the business her father bought around 2009 in ‘The Kleening Zone’.

“I was only here part-time to start – I had another part-time job and was at uni, so I would just work doing the invoices. I wasn’t even helping with the booking because I didn’t know one thing about trucks.”

While Sam may not have had a deep background in transport, one thing she had picked up from her dad Jamie was a very strong work ethic. The part-time element of her job quickly became all-encompassing and soon enough her passion for the transport industry saw the idea of becoming a teacher shelved as Sam ended up full-time at The Kleening Zone.

“I started taking on more and more responsibilities,” she says.

“Dad was teaching me and introducing me to all the different trucking configurations, as well as a lot of the drivers that came in. They were great – they’d get me out to show me the setups and types of truck they drive. At the start I didn’t even realise there were different makes of trucks.”

It wasn’t just managing the business that appealed to Sam.

“I really love getting out and cleaning – even now when I am running everything in here, I will still get out and help the team to clean as often as I can,” Sam says.

“Back at the start I had someone teach me how to wash a truck. From starting at the top, to ensuring the truck stayed wet and had nothing baked onto it, to which parts you could use brushes and which parts you had to use sponges on, I really began to appreciate the importance of what we do, and I am thankful for those lessons.”

Sam credits a lot of the regular customers for fanning the flames of her trucking passion.

Sam and her father Jamie, proud to keep the trucks clean over in Western Australia

It’s not all office work for Sam – she enjoys being able to get out and help the Kleening Zone team to get the trucks shined up

Work boots, microfibres and a gurney. It’s a far cry from Sam’s days of teaching five-year-olds to dance, but she wouldn’t change a thing

“I definitely have my favourite trucks now, but most of all, with doing a lot of the cleaning, I really appreciate how important the trucks are to the drivers and how it’s our role to ensure we clean them with the care they need.”

It’s that level of attention and comprehension that saw Sam throw herself into the seriousness of her role.

“I have become extremely well informed about soaps,” she says.

“I have investigated a lot of different soaps, working out which ones work best in our conditions, which ones work best on the red dirt trucks, all that sort of stuff. There’s a lot more to it than just ‘a truck wash’. When I’m booking the trucks in, I ask a lot of questions, finding out where the trucks have come from and what they cart is important. I like to know if there’s particular areas of the trucks that need attention so I can factor that into the schedule, finding out if they want a wax as well. All that sort of stuff is important.”

While Sam’s love of the transport industry has evolved as her years behind the gurney have compounded, her preexisting skills have continued to flourish in her new role. Ingenuity and personal management are two skills that have played a huge role in

the success of both herself and the family business.

“Co-ordinating the books and timing the bookings I find second nature now,” Sam says, a task made easier by actually knowing the different combinations.

“I also know what staff members work better together and in what areas, so I know I can put certain ones together and they’ll push out a particular truck in a certain time. We have a great crew working for us and they make it easier.”

It's not just soap and staff that Sam has mastered in her new role.

“I also have a huge whiteboard of ideas I am slowly convincing dad to implement,” she says.

Those ideas are seeping through, such as the idea for the movable gantries that Sam designed, and her dad and brother built.

“I wanted something that would make it easier for our team to clean safer and more efficiently. I came up with a design, and dad can build anything, so he and my brother just knocked them up for me.”

Adding a wash and wax option to the truck wash services was also well received by Kleening Zone clients as an extra level of protection for the recently shined up rigs.

From a young lady who didn’t know a body truck from a B-double, young Sam has taken to the transport industry like a microfibre to bodywork. You may be able to tell by the KW badge on her shirt that she has also found her truck of choice among all those that roll out the Kleening Zone wash bays

Managing and helping her staff is a huge part of Sam’s role. Understanding the jobs they have makes it easier to solve problems and keep the system working effectively

Sam’s original motivation for the family-built gantries may have been influenced by her diminutive size, but they make life easier for all the team, allowing for easy access to the harder-to-reach areas of the trucks

Another outside-the-box idea was lining the interior shed with white panelling, the premise being that not only would it tidy up the wash bays and make it easier to clean, but it would also add more light to the sides of vehicles, ensuring less missed spots and a better overall job done.

Sam’s formative years may not have included any thoughts of getting into the transport industry, however it is now a major part of her life and indeed her future.

“I think the transport game is a great place, especially for female workers. People have an idea of what ‘the transport industry’ is like but I have found it great. It can be a really big family, once you are in there are so many people that are keen to teach you and help you,” Sam says.

Sam also points out that in her line of work she is not the only female keen to pick up the sponges and tyre shine

“We’ve had a few females working here and they were great. The guys are also great when it comes to working alongside them,” she says.

“There are areas that just need a bit more elbow grease and the guys will pitch in and help on those spots, it’s teamwork. It isn’t easy work, but it doesn’t matter if you are male or female, you get the job done.”

I shall wrap up my homage to truck washers by once again just trumpeting the fantastic

appeal and diversity of our industry and the opportunities for ‘Woman in Trucking’ to get in and master every aspect. Samantha is a shining example of the alure of our industry. At 20 years old, a truck was just an annoying moving roadblock getting in her way on the journey home. Now, a decade later, she is looking to add a heavy vehicle license to her repertoire. And as for those moving roadblocks, now Sam can’t travel anywhere without noticing and admiring them, albeit it with a critiquing view. Welcome to the club Sam.

Sam credits her dad with a lot of her accomplishments, particularly her work ethic and her addiction to ensuring the highest quality service possible

The Great V8

Peter Rowling has built up an impressive collection of vintage V8 Macks – each one with a story behind it

‘Filthy

V8 Mack in the world

Ask any Mack fan about the brand, and they’ll probably tell you they miss the days of the V8 engines – particularly the E9 V8.

The E9 V8 was a 998CI monster of a diesel engine that powered several different models in the Mack lineup over the years, including the popular Super-Liner and Titan.

It was discontinued in 1999, and its demise was mourned by many Mack devotees – with some feeling that its electronically controlled variants lacked the punch of the earlier, mechanically-controlled offerings.

Kalgoorlie man Peter Rowling is definitely part of this camp — but he’s not too upset, because he’s managed to build up an impressive collection of V8 Macks at home.

“I started collecting V8 Macks because dad had them when I was growing up,” he says.

“They were an absolute workhorse back in the day.

“They also have a unique sound — it’s not like any other truck.”

Peter is the proud owner of the last factoryfitted E9 610 V8 Mack in the world — a 1999 Titan he has dubbed ‘Filthy Princess’.

“I’ve had it for five years now, I bought it off

Dala Transport in Northam, WA,” he tells Deals on Wheels

“After I got it, I got a message from Gary Richards, who is a Mack historian.

“He said ‘Not only have you bought the last factory-fitted V8 Mack in Australia, it’s actually the last factory-fitted V8 Mack in the world!

“I had no idea.”

Peter is only the second owner the truck has had over the years, as Dala Transport had bought it new.

“It’s the truck’s 25th anniversary this year, but it’s still in good condition,” he says.

“It’s pretty much completely original.

“I just tidied up the bottom half of the chassis when I got it, because it’s done 839,000 kilometres now.”

The white paint on the truck is original, with the original brown stripes still underneath, but Peter has wrapped it.

“That way when I’m finished with it, if it ever goes to a museum or something, the wrap can be taken off and it can go back to its original state,” he explains.

The Titan’s ‘Filthy Princess’ nickname was inspired by his youngest daughter.

The special truck bears its history proudly

‘Filthy Princess’ was the lead truck in the Camp Quality Perth Convoy for Kids last year

The 1999 Titan was previously owned by Dala Transport, who kept it in “immaculate” condition

The coffin carrier was bult by Peter for his dad’s friend. He then donated it to the WA Truckies and Big Rigs Facebook group, for anyone to use for free

DEALS Feature

“When she was little, she used to dress up in all these fancy frocks, then go out and play in the mud,” he laughs.

“I usually call it ‘The Last V8’ when I’m talking about it, but I decided to put ‘Filthy Princess’ on the bug deflector.

“I’m getting a new truck and it’s going to be called ‘The Dirty Prince!’”

‘Filthy Princess’ isn’t a working truck, but it

gets put to good use during charity hay runs.

“One of my mates is heavily involved with Farmers Across Borders, and whenever they need an extra truck I pull it out of the shed,” he says.

Although Peter currently owns six trucks in total, he only uses one of them on a daily basis — a 1997 Titan, which also has a 575hp E9-V8 Mack under the bonnet.

It’s usually his go-to when he needs a truck to do pick-ups and drop-offs around the Kalgoorlie area, for his boiler making business.

In keeping with Peter’s track record, the ‘97 Titan also has a claim to fame — it's the first single rail V8 fitted in a Mack.

The truck is in great condition considering it’s racked up 1.9m kilometres over its lifetime.

“I bought it from Mitchell Elks in New South Wales, and gave it a tidy up.

“That was all it needed — it had been well looked after!”

Another favourite of Peter’s is ‘War Horse’, a blue Series II Super-Liner that spent years on the pipeline in Queensland, pulling 200-tonne loads.

“I’ve had a few people messaging me to tell

Peter’s Series II SuperLiner has been dubbed ‘War Horse’ because of the mountain of work it did on the Queensland pipeline project

‘War Horse’ is completely original and Peter has vowed never to change it

This unusual Mack fire truck was just one of 20 of its type built in Brisbane

Peter says his collection is complete — for now at least Filthy Princess is often used for charity hay runs

The R Model that Peter learned to drive in

me they’ve spent a lot of time in it!” he says.

“It’s a really nice truck, in amazing condition.

“It’s completely original and I’m never going to do it up.”

Next up is a V8 Mack fire truck that recently won ‘Most Unique Truck’ at the Coolgardie Truck Muster.

“They made 20 of them out of Brisbane, and they were a rapid response fire truck for the airport,” he says.

“They’ve got a 441 improved blueprint E9 Mack engine in them.”

Peter bought the fire truck at an auction after the previous owner passed away.

“It’s not useful for anything, but it’s nice to look at,” he says.

“The kids love it and like to climb all over it at the truck shows.

“It’s still driveable, and my understanding is it’s the only one that’s still complete in the world.”

The fire truck is another contender for a museum once Peter decides to give it up.

“I will probably look at sending it to the National Road Transport Museum in Alice Springs, if they would like to take it on,” he says.

“At least up there, it won’t deteriorate.

“We would probably remove the V8 engine and put a dummy engine in it if it’s just going to sit there on display – it would be a big waste otherwise.”

Peter also has a 1989 V8 Value Liner that’s

in the process of getting restored by West Oz Custom Trucks in Perth.

“They made four of those, with a 48-inch, fully-integrated bunk,” he explains.

“It has a full-size side door in it so you can walk in the side.

“I was lucky enough that a friend of mine knew the guy who had it and wanted it to go to a good home.

“So I went over, pulled it out of the hay shed, put it on a trailer and brought it home.”

It’s getting a full nut and bolt restoration, with everything being kept as original as possible.

This is partly because it has fond memories attached to it – not for Peter, but for its original owners.

“The truck was delivered to Kevin Gobbles in Broken Hill, he had a transport company there,” Peter says.

“Kevin has sadly passed away, but his nephew contacted me and asked me not to change the truck.

“It’s hard because I own it now, but that’s most of the reason why I’m not going to change too much of it.”

Peter’s passion for special V8 Macks is clear, but he thinks his collection is almost complete.

“I tend to keep buying and selling trucks until I find the right ones, but pretty much done now,” he laughs. “I have to keep the missus happy.”

The V8 Value Liner is just one of four ever made with a 48” sleeper bunk, and is currently being restored in Perth by West Oz Custom Trucks

The Elevating Work Platform Association’s (EWPA) Yellow Card Operator Licence is now available digitally – providing even more information for worksites around Australia

A new digital version of the Elevating Work Platform Association’s (EWPA) Yellow Card Operator Licence is now available – helping employers to be con dent of employee skills in the workplace.

With over 500,000 operators trained by more than 200 accredited trainers across Australia, the EWPA Yellow Card has been recognised as a mark of quality training and safety compliance since its inception in 1987.

However, the EWPA says that the prevalence of counterfeit Yellow Cards has posed signi cant risks, allowing untrained individuals to operate machinery and increasing the likelihood of workplace accidents.

The introduction of the Digital Yellow Card aims to address these issues by o ering a secure and easily veri able credential that can’t be duplicated or misused.

EWPA chief executive James Oxenham says the Digital Yellow Card is a major advance in e orts to improve workplace safety.

“By embracing digital credentials, we are making it easier for employers to verify training and ensuring that workers are appropriately trained to operate these complex machines,” he says.

“This is a crucial step in protecting lives and supporting the industry’s commitment to safety.”

Employers and site managers will be able to use the EWPA to drill down on the makes and models of EWPs that operators were trained on, and every training record includes a photo of the operator.

While these features have been available since 2013, the Digital Yellow Card takes it one step further by allowing operators to build on their training records by capturing Veri cation of Competency (VoC) in addition to the original EWPs they

were trained on - all captured and veri able via the new Digital Yellow Card.

In addition to the Digital Yellow Card, the EWPA has also launched a digital version of the Telescopic Handler Association of Australia (TSHA) Gold Card for telehandlers, providing the same security and veri cation bene ts. Like the Yellow Card, the TSHA Gold Card helps ensure operators of telehandlers are properly trained and competent.

The EWPA has also secured a trademark for the term ‘Yellow Card’, further protecting the integrity of the training program and preventing unauthorised use by non-accredited providers.

This measure will help eliminate confusion about the legitimacy of Yellow Card training and ensure that only those trained by EWPAAccredited Trainers receive the EWPA Yellow Card.

South Australian manufacturer Vailo takes out design awards for wildlife-friendly lighting

Australian lighting manufacturer Vailo picked up two Australian Good Design Awards for its Zenith Gen-V PC Amber Floodlight last month, recognising excellence in design and innovation.

The awards showcase excellence in the design, architecture, engineering and business sectors.

Vailo’s ‘PC Amber’ received a prestigious Good Design Award Winner Accolade in both the Engineering Design and Product Design categories – the third and fourth to Vailo has won in the past three years.

The Vailo 1000W Zenith Gen-V PC Amber Luminaire was designed for outdoor area lighting, focusing on e ective illumination while minimising disruption to nocturnal wildlife,.

The award judges said the llight balanced “human usability with ecological sensitivity.”

“The balance between e ective lighting and ecological considerations make this luminaire a noteworthy innovation in outdoor lighting,” the judges wrote in their award citations.

Vailo founder and Chief Executive Aaron Hickmann said the industry recognition was important for his team, which had put a significant amount of time into developing the Zenith PC Amber Floodlight.

“We’re very proud of this light, and we are continuously researching new ways to develop our products for the Australian lifestyle and create less of an environmental footprint,” Hickmann says.

“Unlike traditional white or blue lights, which can disrupt natural behaviours of nocturnal animals and heavily attract insects, the Zenith Gen-V PC Amber uses PC Amber-coloured LED lights to provide a light source which complements the environment. It’s an environmentally friendly lighting option for wildlife-sensitive areas.”

The 2024 Awards highlighted excellence across 12 design disciplines, covering more than 32 categories and being evaluated by more than 80 jurors from around the globe, including designers, engineers, architects, and industry leaders.

The Vailo 1000W Zenith Gen-V PC Amber Luminaire lights have been recognised for design excellence.
