As winter arrives, the nights get shorter and the weather turns a step colder there’s a bunch of truck lovers out there who start reaching for their jackets and plotting a path to beautiful Alexandra in Victoria.

One of the bigger regional centres to the north of Melbourne, Alexandra is often referred to as the gateway to the high country.

It’s a picturesque town that opens its streets and its doors to the transport community each Queen’s (and now King’s) Birthday long weekend to celebrate trucks, hot rods, utes and wood chopping.

This year the Deals on Wheels team will be joining the throng at the 27th Alexandra Truck, Ute & Rod Show on June 9 to experience the event firsthand and hand out plenty of magazines along the way.

We will also be on the look out for great trucking stories to share with our readers over the next 12 months.

There’s nothing quite like the passion on show at a truck event like Alexandra, where drivers have put in hours of effort to polish their trucks to maximum shine for the public to admire.

It’s a chance for transport people to gather, to catch up with old friends, and to bring their affection for the industry to the fore.

Transport pulls budget cash

The federal government has promised significant funding for transport in the 2024-25 budget, investing heavily in “infrastructure, strategic transport and net zero”

The 2024-25 Federal Budget has been released and it includes significant roads investments across the country, support for driver training and the continued move to lowering emissions.

Building Australia

‘Building Australia’ is largely concerned with projects that will increase or improve Australia’s transport infrastructure, across both road and rail.

A total of $16.5 billion has been assigned for new and existing projects across Australia across a period of the next 10 years to “improve productivity, liveability, and sustainability.”

There will be $4.6 billion put towards a number of roads and rail projects, with major investments including:

• $1.9 billion for Western Sydney road and rail infrastructure.

• $300 million for METRONET to deliver a capacity signalling program in Western Australia.

• $177 million to deliver bridge and intersection upgrades along the Warrego Highway in Queensland.

• $80 million to upgrade the Lyell Highway between Granton and New Norfolk in Tasmania.

• $120 million for the Princes Highway to deliver interchange upgrades at Mount Barker and Verdun in South Australia.

• $12 million for the Bridgewater Road and Portland Ring Road intersection upgrade in Victoria.

$10.1 billion will also be put towards existing infrastructure projects including:

• $3.25 billion for North East Link in Victoria.

• $1.4 billion for METRONET projects in Western Australia.

• $ 50 million to ensure the delivery of the existing Appin Road project in New South Wales.

• $27.1 million to deliver the duplication of William Hovell Drive in the ACT.

Net zero

The biggest area of concern for the government in the 2024-25 federal budget was the introduction of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard for light vehicles and commercial vans, introduced in March.

$84.5 million will be invested by the federal government over the next five years in order to establish the standard, set up a regulator for it and facilitate credit trading between manufacturers.

The ‘Future Made in Australia’ framework will guide many of the government’s future decisions around the continued move to zero emissions, and will support the move to renewable diesel in the heavy vehicle sector.

This includes the ‘Net Zero Transformation Stream’, which identifies the road transport industry as a priority sector for support under the stream.

Investments in the net zero area in the budget include:

• $18.5 million over four years from 2024-25 to develop a certification scheme for low-carbon liquid fuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuels and renewable diesel, in the transport sector by expanding the ‘Guarantee of Origin’ scheme.

• $1.5 million over two years from 2024-25 to undertake a regulatory impact analysis of the costs and benefits of introducing mandates or other demand-side measures for low carbon liquid fuels.

• I nvesting $1.7 billion over the next decade in the Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund, to support the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to commercialise net zero innovations including low-carbon liquid fuels.

Increasing road safety and productivity

In addition to road investments, the budget included funding for programs focused on road safety and productivity, to increase safety for all motorists.

The Roads to Recovery Program, which provides funding to the construction and maintenance of the nation’s local road infrastructure assets, rose from $500 million to $1 billion per year. The Black Spot Program also increased from $110 million per year to $150 million.

The Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program and the Bridges Renewal Program have been merged into the new Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, with the government allocating at least $200 million to the program each year.

$10.8 million will be provided across 2024-25 for a one-year National Road Safety Education and awareness campaign, and $21.2 million over six years from 2024-25 to improve the reporting of national road safety data via the National Road Safety Data Hub.

Volvo is looking towards the future with its new electric offerings – but the popular brand also has a rich history in Australia

1927: The very first Volvo vehicle, the Volvo ÖV4, rolls off the production line at the company’s first factory building in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The founders are Assar Gabrielsson, a former egg seller who goes on to become the head sales manager for ball bearing giant SKF, and Gustaf Larsson, a mechanical engineer with a mind for cars and smart solutions. Volvo is already turning a profit by its third year in operation.

As early as December 1926, design of a mediumduty truck (named 'Series 1') had started

1940-1945: During the World War 2 years, Volvo’s business operations undergo a period of rapid expansion, with some major acquisitions.

1968: In the late 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s, Volvo continues to build its business, opening more plants in Sweden and Belgium. By 1968, it is ready to expand further afield – commencing truck assembly operations in Australia.

1972: Volvo opens a major production facility for heavy-duty trucks in Wacol, Brisbane. It focuses on developing vehicles that can deal with the challenges facing operators in Australia, such as extra heavy loads, extreme weather events, and rough terrain.

To this day, Wacol is home to the largest truck assembly plant in Australia, with over 700 staff. It builds trucks for the Australian market as well as New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands.

1977: By 1977, sales of Volvo trucks in Australia have grown from just 167 per year to over 1,000 annually.

1988: Production expands from just a medium truck range to include FL6 small trucks, which prove very popular with distribution companies.

1995: The FH16 Globetrotter is released –standing out from its competitors and selling extremely well.

1999: Volvo sells its “crown jewel”, Volvo Cars, to the Ford Motor Company for SEK 50 billion. The Volvo Group, focusing on the commercial automotive industry, is created. Following this deal, the group acquires two new brands: Mack and Renault Trucks.

2019: A new business area, Volvo Autonomous Solutions, is founded. It is intended to develop autonomous trucks to operate in sectors such as mining, ports and transport between logistics centres. Volvo also becomes the first global manufacturer to start series production of heavy electric trucks.

The new FH16, available to order from July 2024, will be Australia’s most powerful on-highway truck

technologically advanced trucks with modern features. Some of the latest technologies they use include Electronic Braking Systems, Electronic Stability Programs, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Anti-Theft Systems.

Its range now includes the powerful FH16; the versatile FM, the FMX, suited for construction applications; the FH, suited for long hauls; and the compact FE.

From July this year, customers will also

be able to order the new FH16.

With a range of horsepower ratings stretching from 600hp to 780hp, it will be the most powerful on-highway truck in Australia.

When it comes to the battle for highest heavy duty truck sales in Australia, Volvo is often snapping at Kenworth’s heels – losing out to the popular brand in 2022 and 2023. Will 2024 be Volvo’s year? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Heavy duty truck sales’ records continue to be set in 2024 with the 1,550 sales recorded for the month of April smashing the previous April record of 1,295 sales recorded in 2023.

Volvo is leading the charge and building a strong lead in the heavies category of the latest Truck Industry Council (TIC) T-Mark database report off the back of its 353 deliveries in April.

Those sales put Volvo 155 sales ahead of its closest competitor, Kenworth, for the year so far, 1,141 to 986, in a segment that has delivered a total of 5,338 trucks to market this year.

Across all of the truck sales categories, including heavy duty, medium duty, light duty and commercial vans, 4,043 sales were recorded for April, an 11.9 per cent increase on the 3,613 sales recorded for April 2023.

Isuzu continues to lead the way for overall truck sales in 2024

For the year to date, 14,387 vehicles have been delivered across all of the sales categories, up from 14,071 sales for the same period in 2023, reflecting overall growth of 2.25 per cent.

In the Medium Duty segment Isuzu continued to dominate in the April results, with its 347 sales bringing it to 1,272 sales for the year and accounting for 53 per cent of the sales in the segment so far in 2024.

The nearest competitor, Hino, sold 189 medium trucks in April, hitting 683 sales for the year and 28.5 per cent of the category.

A total of 2,400 medium duty trucks were sold in Australia up to April 30, 8.75 per cent up from the 2,207 sales in the category reported for January 1 to April 30, 2023.

On the Light Duty front it was another win for Isuzu, and a drop in sales overall for the category.

Of the 1,148 little trucks sold for April, Isuzu sold 523, followed by Hino with 199 sales, Fuso on 162 sales and Iveco with 97.

For the year to date in the little truck market Isuzu’s 1,943 sales saw it account for 45.4 per cent of the light truck deliveries made so far this year.

The overall LD year to date sales result of 4,277, fell well short of the 5,199 sales achieved in the first four months of 2023 – a drop of 17.73 per cent.

Heavy duty

(Cab-chassis type vehicles, both rigid and prime mover, with three or more axles or two axles, a GVM > 8,000kg and GCM of > 39,000kg)

A total of 5,338 heavy duty trucks have been sold in Australia so far this year, up 8.71 per cent on the 4,910 sales records for the same four months in 2023.

For April, the top 10 brands in terms of sales results are: Volvo (353), Kenworth (285), Isuzu (220), Scania (145), Mercedes-Benz (88), Mack (84), UD Trucks (78), Fuso (71), Hino (67), and DAF (57).

Medium duty

(Cab-chassis type vehicle with GVM > 8,000kg and GCM up to and including 39,000kg)

January 16, 1979, is a date forever etched in the history of truck racing in Australia.

Australia's fastest truck is celebrated in a new book

Larry "Big O" Ormsby has shared his memories of driving a truck powered by an aeroplane engine

It was on this day the Waltzing Matilda Jet Truck created a new land World Speed Record for a truck over a flying mile, reaching a maximum velocity of 276.9km/h.

The 45th anniversary of this recordbreaking moment was celebrated by more than 100 fans at the home of the world record in Wycheproof in north-western Victoria, and a commemorative, full colour pictorial book has been released that details the story of how this beast of a vehicle came to exist.

The Waltzing Matilda Jet Truck Story, authored by Larry Ormsby (OAM), Scott O’Hare, Stephen O’Hare and Alan Pearce, is loaded with hundreds of photos from the day, along with facts, figures and profiles of the key proponents in of a story about a team with an amazing dream, who were able to overcome numerous obstacles to make it a reality.

It’s a story that started in November 1978 when the road transport industry was about getting business done, with lower running costs, higher profit margins and a “can-do” attitude shared by owners and drivers who shared a love of what they did for a living.

It was also the year Transpec Limited, (which now operates under the management of BPW) a major distributor and service provider of world-class brands of semi-trailer ancillary equipment and parts,

launched the first computer-aided trailer refrigeration system in Australia branded as the Thermo King, SB-1 Super Boss.

The then Transpec national advertising and promotions manager Alan Pearce explains why that launch is so important to the birth of the Waltzing Matilda Truck legend:

“To gain maximum brand awareness of the new Super Boss refrigeration unit (named after the fastest diesel truck on Earth) we decided to fly both the 7.5 tonne customised 1000 horsepower 1974 Kenworth Conventional ‘W’ Series truck, and the driver, Tyron Malone, down under.

“Back then it was a bold and expensive undertaking.

“So, to fully capitalise, on both the expenditure and the promotion, we ran Australia’s first national truck drag racing series to see if there was an Aussie who could successfully take on the Yank from a standing start over the quarter mile straight.”

That three-month truck drag-racing series culminated in Melbourne at Bob Jane’s Calder Park Raceway where over 40,000 die-hard truck enthusiasts rallied together, hoping to see Malone get beaten.

But before the final race day took place, a left-of-field contender entered the scene.

“About eight weeks out from winding up the promotional event I received a call from Stephen O’Hare, the son of Terry O’Hare

who built those crazy-weird vehicles for the Aussie cult classic movie, Mad Max,” Pearce recalls.

“Terry had also started the Re-Car Group and was designing and building buses, coaches, armoured cars and fire trucks at his body-building enterprise, Centurion Transport Engineering.

“Stephen said they wanted to challenge Malone in a stand-alone race because the O’Hare family was so patriotic, that an Australian losing to an American was not an option.

“So, I headed off to Centurion somewhat skeptical about the latecomers. But boy, did I change my mind when I saw what was planned to literally blow the doors off the Super Boss.”

What Alan saw that day was Terry, along with a select and dedicated crew of supporters, in the midst of converting a Ford Louisville LN 7000 Series Truck, plus a chassis, to house a World War 2, RAAF Canberra Bomber jet engine. To leave not no doubt about the country this jet truck originated from, they had called it ... Waltzing Matilda.

Many dramas followed during the lead-up to Matilda arriving for the face-off against Malone.

Incidents included unforeseen learning curves during pre-race training sessions, to a complete meltdown of the jet engine when a loose rivet was sucked onto the turbine blades when on full power. As a result of the rivet mishap, the jet engine was declared a complete right off with less than 80 hours before race day to find and install a replacement jet engine.

“Terry O’Hare’s attitude of ‘there is no such word as can’t’ turned the impossible into the probable,” Pearce said.

And so, on Sunday, November 28th, with the ‘Big O’ Ormsby behind the wheel, Waltzing Matilda rolled out on onto the Calder Raceway start line next to where Malone’s Super Boss was revving up to get the winning getaway the moment the tree lights ran down to the green.

Due to several unanticipated

developments, Malone’s Super Boss won on the day.

But that disappointment didn’t dampen the O’Hare team’s devotion to what had become an Aussie icon to a growing number of Waltzing Matilda Jet Truck enthusiasts.

Terry and his crew remained committed to eventually beating Malone at his own game and organised a timed run in a bid to set a new speed record.

The record and speed attempt took place on the Birchip – Wycheproof Road in 1979 on a 6.5km stretch, that although it was straight, was only 8m wide.

Driver, Larry Ormsby knew it would be a challenging run.

“I had only driven Matilda seven times at terminal speeds of around 177 km/h during the Super Boss drag racing event, and as such, if my attempt was to be successful, I needed to add an extra 96.5 km/h.

“The actual result was a flying mile average time of 276.9 km/h.”

That was not an insignificant number and Larry realised if he was to become the world’s fastest truck driver, he needed to gain further momentum through a longer run-up to the starting line.

“My suggested extended approach line involved navigating through a sharp left bend,” Larry said.

“But Terry argued that the jet truck might have some stability issues. My flippant reply … that trucks have been going around corners for years … resulted in Terry shaking his head saying that I was mad.

“Those words echoed in my head as Matilda began to move from side to side during the hairy second run needed to conform to the international authority’s world speed record requirements.”

Waltzing Matilda set a new world record over the flying mile that day clocking up an incredible 276.9 km/h beating the Super Boss effort by a staggering 72.42 km/h.

When it comes to growing a business, having confidence in the equipment you choose to use is key

When James Hussary decided to go out and start a business of his very own, it was these words that ensured his success.

Working in the transport industry for 20 years, James says he got his first taste of the transport world as a yardy and slowly built his way up from there.

“I became operations manager, state manager and general manager. It was a 17year long process,” he laughs.

While James enjoyed his role, he was itching for a way to branch out and make his own mark.

“I had decided that I was done working for someone else and knew I would love running my own business.”

James says Hino is worth every dollar

Xpress Fleet filled a void in the market, combining traditional transport services with fully managed fleet logistics solutions.

The business works with automotive OEMs, dealers and fleet managers nationally

to provide solutions to help move vehicles from dock to dealer and wharf to warehouse.

“We specialise in a whole heap of stuff, from bringing new pre-released vehicles to commercial breaks and photoshoots and major events like Women’s FIFA World Cup, A League final and AFL grand final,” James says.

“For photoshoots and commercial breaks, we will handle everything with the manufacturers, setting up up events, get the vehicles detailed, ready and transported.

“You could call it car carrying but we honestly do a lot more than that.”

When it came time to start expanding his fleet, James says he was very particular on what trucks would be suited to the role.

“Our biggest requirement was that the trucks were reliable and safe, that was the most important thing for us.”

“Hino stood out immediately.”

James says that even in his older roles, he had always found himself leaning towards Hino, with 60 out of the 120 subcontractors he oversaw driving one.

“The trucks are built well, they are safe, and the quality is amazing,” he says.

With his mind made up, he made the purchase of two new Hino FD 500 Series.

“And let me tell you, that was the right decision.”

Travelling along the Hume Highway in one of the FDs, one of James’s drivers found themselves coming face to face with a kangaroo on the road.

“A kangaroo popped out while he was doing 100 kilometres an hour,” he says.

Sticking to what Xpress Fleet had taught him, the driver drove straight through the kangaroo to avoid more catastrophic outcomes.

“We were lucky, the only damage was some scuff marks to the bull bar.”

Only three days later however, the driver wasn’t so lucky.

“You wouldn’t believe it, on the same stretch of road another kangaroo jumped out and hit him at four am in the morning.”

more excessive this time around, smashing the headlight completely.

“I was in Sydney at the time, but I called up Hino straight away and sent the driver to a Melbourne dealership.”

James says he was floored at how quickly they responded, a new headlight ready and waiting before the driver even pulled up.

“All we had to do was undo two bolts, drop the bull bar forward, replace the headlight and put it back up.”

“It took 45 minutes and he was back in Sydney the next day.”

James says he was also surprised at how well the Hino Genuine bull bar pulled through, protecting the rest of the truck.

“In any other circumstance or with a different truck, we would’ve been taken off the road for weeks or months,” he says.

Having shelf parts ready and available ensured James could get the rig back on the road and continue work as normal.

James stressed how detrimental having a truck parked could be in his line of work.

“Our trucks are specialised, we have decking, ramps, tilt trays and more specially fitted to these trucks. We couldn’t just rent one while we waited.”

“It also wouldn’t just impact us, but it would cause a domino effect that would affect everyone using our services.”

“That’s why we are more than happy to invest in quality and reliability.”

More than satisfied with his decision to stick with Hino and its Genuine Parts, James already has another truck being built and is eagerly awaiting its arrival in the coming months.

From brand-new shows to old-time classics, there was no shortage of truck shows this month.

May saw an amazing display of trucks new and old being celebrated around the country. With newcomer Sydney TruckFest making an incredible entrance to the scene and more, we were spoiled for choice.

We’ve scoured the show scenes once again and caught up with a few truck show enthusiasts who happily travel the country to share their passion projects with other enthusiasts and to see what’s new in the show scene.

Impressive International

There was something about the year of 1978 that pushed out incredible rigs.

“They bring back a lot of memories for me.”

Having always been interested in the brand, Frank had slowly begun his own little collection over the years.

“We actually had this exact model previously, but it wasn’t in the best shape.”

“So when we saw this one go on the market, we sold the old one and grabbed it right away.”

Luckily for Frank, this rig was in excellent condition, only needing a couple small aesthetic changes.

He recently got it lined and scrolled by Neville Greentree at Kemps Creek, giving it that extra wow factor.

Frank Culmone’s 1978 International Transtar 4300 is no exception.

The bright red truck was purchased about five years ago, bringing back familial memories for Frank.

“My father was in transport for years and had actually purchased one of the ’78 Internationals when they first came out,” he says.

“We were really lucky that we didn’t have to do too much to it and it was in pretty good order.”

Since getting it perfect, Frank enjoys showing her off at the truck shows, with the Sydney TruckFest his most recent.

“Whenever we can make the time, we enjoy taking going to them. It can be hard with the business, but we make it work.”

Frank is planning on taking the rig to Dubbo for the Golden Oldies truck show in August.

“It’s a two day show and we are pretty keen to get there.”

Winning Kenworth

While we all wish to be the best of something, taking home a trophy for Best Truck isn’t in the cards for everyone.

For Matty Bowler however, the 2021 Kenworth 409 SAR he drives for Juts Haulage seemed to be just the ticket he needed.

Taking home second place for The Silverback Armour ‘Beast of the Show’ at Sydney TruckFest, Matty says he wasn’t expecting it in the slightest.

“I go around to the truck shows for the camaraderie and catching up with mates over a beer, I never expected to win,” Matty says.

“Honestly I am still feeling pretty chuffed about it.”

The rig was ordered back in 2019, finally finding home with the Juts Haulage crew in 2021.

“My boss and I worked as a team to determine how we wanted the truck to be custom built.”

“It was nice to go back and forth with each other and each input what we wanted.”

One thing which was a non-negotiable for Matty’s boss was the inclusion of 10-inch stacks.

An uncommon extra, Matty says most people opt for 8 or 9 inches.

“Having 10 inches is sort of unheard of, but my boss was adamant,” he laughs.

Playing as the drawcard for his win, Matty says people love to ask questions about their unusual request.

“I definitely think the 10-inches is something that makes the truck stand out amongst all the others.”

“People love to come up and ask all about it, just like if anyone had something a bit unique on their truck.”

As she is a working rig, Matty like to pull her off the roads around two days before a show, allowing for plenty of time to get her shining and ready.

“It’s a nightmare process,” he laughs, “but it pays off.”

“We give It a good wipe down, polish the bar up. I have to actually get people to help me because it’s such a big job.”

Matty says he’s keen to get back her back at the shows in the future, maybe even stealing a few more trophies to display.

While some recent truck shows have become a display of Kenworth’s, the inaugural Sydney TruckFest had that and much more on show.

Highlighting rigs both new and old, Luke Refalo’s 1978 Cabover Mack FR700 was a welcome inclusion on the day.

Luke and his family purchased the rig back in 2018.

“We initially had no plans of restoring it, and were just using it for spare parts,” Luke says.

“But after looking at it for a bit, we decided we just had to restore it and put it in our collection.”

“It was definitely a spur of the moment decision,” he laughs.

going to need a lot of TLC to get her back in fighting condition.

“We had a full restoration. It needed work on the chassis, new paintwork, exhaust, interior, electrical, you name it.”

“But we knew it would end up great once we finished it off.”

After putting in the hard work, the cabover Mack is now a standout at any show it attends.

Luke says he enjoys taking the Mack around to the shows when he can.

“I just love looking at everybody’s trucks and what they’ve done to them and catching up with people that I rarely get to see.”

“You don’t see many cabover Macks nowadays. From my knowledge, there aren’t too many that have been restored,” Luke says.

“Honestly, I don’t understand why

But it isn’t just the Mack that Luke parades around, with six other trucks joining his collection back home.

“We just buy trucks that we like the look of or like the model. Some of them were working trucks that we have retired and others we have purchased on a whim.”

As this month’s edition of Deals on Wheels hits the shelves around Australia, there are just six days to go before the gates open at the Alexandra Truck, Ute & Rod Show

Drop by Grant St in Alexandra on a normal week day and you’ll find a bustling country town with locals going about their business supporting local cafes, clothes shops, book shops and agricultural supply stores. Drop by on the Sunday of the King's Birthday long weekend and it's a whole other story.

To be found 130km north-east of Melbourne, at an elevation of 221m, Alexandra is a central hub for the surrounding area. It’s an area steeped in history – where timber yards and timber cutting drove its early commercial success, and where tourists now know it as a stepping off point to Victoria’s high country.

This year the local Country Fire Authority celebrates its 150th year of existence, and the main street features National Trust-listed buildings including the original Post Office, National Bank and Law Courts.

The Timber Tramway Museum captures the town’s early years, rich with artefacts and stories from a bygone era, and the Goulburn River flows nearby offering scenic views and the opportunity to fish or play on the water.

2024 marks the 27th time the good people of Alexandra have turned over their streets on the Sunday of the Queen’s (now King’s) Birthday long weekend to all manner of vehicles and thousands of visitors who turn out to see them shine.

The heroes of the show are the prime movers that roll into place in the early hours of Sunday morning, three abreast for as far as the eye can see on Grant St.

The utes, adorned with huge aerials, spotlights, stickers, and bullbars line up further down the road, closer to the Rotary Park, and the local hot rod club rolls in with a collection of stunning machines, all gleaming chrome, big fat tyres and classic leather trims.

A little further afield is Lake Eildon, a popular destination for water skiers and boating enthusiasts, a place where families are known to camp for a month at a time, every year, generation after generation.

And, for those in the transport industry, Alexandra has also become synonymous with a grand gathering of trucks, cool nights,

Last year’s event drew a crowd of 15,000 people, including the wood chopping crowd who attend to celebrate the skills of axe men and women vying for prizes of up to $500 at the chopping grounds in Rotary Park in what’s usually the last competition of the woodchop season.

“We’re trying to be an industry show, promoting people who are putting back into the industry, to make it a better industry,” he says.

“We have great support from everyone in town and it’s a good boost for business before we go into winter.”

On that front, the team from Transport Women Australia Limited will have a stand, sharing all the reasons why the transport industry offers fantastic job opportunities for everyone.

For many truckies the real event kicks off on Saturday morning when they gather at Yarck at 11am for a barbecue before the Alexandra Truck Run sets off at Noon to arrive at Alexandra in time for a 2pm service at the Victorian Truck Drivers Memorial in Rotary Park.

The big day itself kicks off at 4.30am on Sunday as stallholders and vehicles are expertly guided into place by a hardy bunch of volunteers and professionals who provide directions and assistance for show participants and show goers alike throughout the day.

The smell of sausages and bacon sizzling is guaranteed to start early as local charity groups take up the offer of providing food and fundraising for their causes, and

It's not too often you'll see prime movers reverse parked outside the Shamrock Hotel

Keeping the trucks, utes and hot rods dry and shining on the bitumen roads is popular with drivers and visitors alike

Shopkeepers in the city’s heart throw open their doors on the day too, providing visitors with the chance to sample local goods and show their support for the community.

The heart of the event comes in the form of the main stage, on Grant St, which plays host to live music from 10am to 4pm, interrupted only by a charity auction at 2pm and the announcement of truck show trophies at 3.30pm.

On that point, judging starts at 9.30am with independent judges drawn from the transport industry for the truck side, and from the enthusiast cohort for the rods and utes.

With the trophies done, the show winds down around 4pm and orderly procession of vehicles begin to make their way out of town, offering plenty of photographic opportunities for those in know who take up positions on the main routes out.

The 2023 event saw 350 trucks on display along with 32 hot rods, and dozens of utes, and this year is shaping up to be at least as big.

For the families, there’s a kid’s corner of sorts with showbags, rides and show games, to add an extra dimension to the day.

On the music front Melbourne musician Brooke Taylor will be there with her band The Poison Spitting Gin Queens, offering folk, blues and country style songs from her growing list of albums.

Multi-award-winning country musician Paul Costa will take turns on the stage bringing his own set list of popular songs to the table to keep the crowd entertained.

The show, which offers free entry to the public, could not happen without the support of a long list of sponsors, led by major sponsors Larsen’s Truck Sales, Hallam Truck Centre, Simpsons Fuel, Multispares Truck Parts, HG Tyre Group, FoodWorks Alexandra, Fineblade Concrete Construction Civil Earthworks and Traffic Management and Murrundindi Shire Council.

Profits from the event are put back into the local community in the form of grants to local charities. Last year $33,000 was raised and distributed from the day.

Taking home top spot at the Alexandra Truck Show in 2023 was a highlight for Nick Gierisch, but will he be able to do it again?

Winning trophies is something many associate with high school sport or academics, but over at Deals on Wheels, we prefer the ones associated with trucks. If you found yourself strolling through the aisles at the 2023 Alexandra show, there would be no way you missed Nick Gierisch’s 2021 Kenworth T909.

Decked out to the nines in chrome work, glossy paint and carefully thought out extras, the truck would even make a normal person double-take.

It should come as no surprise that the Kenworth took home Truck of the Show, stamping its notoriety into the history books.

But what you may not know, is that

A blank canvas for the Gierisch’s to put their spin on

‘Dancing in the Dark’ took home Best in Show only a few months earlier at the Boort Truck Show.

“That was our debut show,” Nick says.

“We finally had it all finished and decided to take it out.

“We had no idea it would win.”

Despite his humble attitude, the truck was destined for trophies the moment it had its final polish.

Buying the rig right off the factory line in 2020, Nick patiently awaited the arrival of his new play toy.

“We didn’t end up getting it until 2021, and then it took a whole year to make the truck exactly how we wanted it,” Nick says.

Originally running his business Gierisch Bros Trucking with his brother, Nick says they had a definite preference for flashy Kenworth’s.

“Over the years we have had four Kenworth’s and one Peterbilt.”

“We usually ended up going with Kenworth because they are the most reliable.”

Nick says they always had big plans for the new addition, purposefully leaving off

factory extras that they wanted to spruce up themselves.

“It was backed up with a lot from the factory, but we also left a lot off knowing we had a lot of work we wanted to do.”

“The list was very long,” he chuckles.

Originally coming to them with a high-rise bunk, they immediately took the roof off and installed a low-line roof.

“With doing this meant we had to do an entirely new interior.”

And that’s not where it ended.

“We had it repainted and added a lot of stainless steel and all of those extras.”

Nick sent the truck to kings of cool, Justin and Turk Klos who had a few ideas of their own for the stainless-steel work and lights.

“We tried to do as much as we could, but sometimes you just have to go to someone with more experience,” he says.

The paint job was done by Wayne from Allstate and was spot-on, with the glossy black, red and gold making it unmissable on the road.

The sign work and line work were all hand painted by Heath Saunders from Saunders signs.

Nick and Andrew Plant at AJP fabrication tackled most of the work, while Nick and his brother Ben finished off the interior.

When she was finally ready, Nick put her straight to work carting bitumen.

“It carts bitumen out of the refineries all around the place, delivering to road crews and whoever necessary.”

After a full year warming up on the road, it was time to hit Alexandra, instantly becoming a hit.

“It turned a lot of heads everywhere. Everyone had questions about it because it is quite a unique truck.”

“I definitely didn’t expect it to win at all though. When they called my name out I was in shock.”

Nick says the praise was unexpected, and guesses the winning streak is because “it’s something a bit different than normal.”

With preparations underway to make the trek to Alexandra again this year, we can already tell it’ll be tough competition.

Fine weather and big crowds were all part of the day at the Rocklea Heritage Truck Show

There’s no better feeling than meeting up with your mates at a truck show.

Reminiscing on times past, checking out the restored rigs and bonding over a shared love, there’s no other energy quite like it.

The attendees at the Rocklea Heritage Truck Show share this sentiment, descending upon the Queensland suburb this past weekend to do what they do best.

Around 190 trucks rolled into the showgrounds, with every make and model accounted for.

From Atkinsons to classic Kenworth’s and more, organiser John Dodd says the event was a celebration of history.

With a windstorm barrelling onto the showgrounds Saturday night, a little extra TLC was needed Sunday to get it back up and running.

“Considering we were expecting some harsh weather, it cleared off quickly and it turned out to be a really, really good weekend.”

“That’s what we come here to do. There is something so special about the history of trucks, and how far back some of their stories go,” John says.

“Take my 1988 2600 Kenworth for example, I have spoken to some of the owners and have heard stories about what the truck has done over its life.

“It’s just amazing,” he says. “And that’s what these people come for.”

“We had some people fly down from South Australia, some from Cairns, and a lot of people from Kew in New South Wales surprisingly,” Mark says.

“It was great to see so many people show up.”

The Heritage Truck Shows are known for focusing on appreciation, not competition, with no awards handed out for Best in Show.

definitely still some standouts on display.

The most highly anticipated attendee was the Mean Machine, making its show debut after being in disrepair for years.

“It was a drag truck back in the 70’s and now belongs to Bernie Tobin,” Mark says.

The Mean Machine was left in a state of disrepair for a number of years, with eager fans awaiting its restoration for some years.

“This was its first outing since being fully restored. Billy Gordon, who was the drag racer for it back in the day came along to.”

“It is such a spectacular vehicle. They started it up a few times over the weekend and everybody came running as soon as they heard it.”

Other notable trucks include the first Kenworth that Brown & Hurley ever sold, a 50th anniversary Kenworth, and some beaut Mack Super-Liners.

“The trucks were beautiful,” Mark laughs. “There were a number of beautiful trucks.”

Both Mark and John agreed that their favourite part of the event was simply chatting to everyone, eager to hear the history and stories associated with the rigs.

“Everyone has got a story to tell. Either our father’s drove a truck like that back in the day, or we had, or we wished we had,” Mark says.

“It’s a link to the past.”

Sydney’s inaugural TruckFest went off without a hitch, filling the much-needed trucking gap in the market

Sydney’s “truck show drought” has been washed away, with spectators and truckies from across NSW pouring into the inaugural Sydney TruckFest to show support.

While the rain pelted down, it wasn’t enough to keep avid truckies and families away from the Hawkesbury Showground.

Taking place from May 3-5 in Clarendon NSW, over 4,700 attendees came to witness the event. Organiser Brendon Ryan says considering the weather, locals showed up in full force.

“For its first ever run, we were completely surprised,” he says.

With 70 trucks lining up at the gate, Brendon

says despite initial nerves, they were pleased with how everything turned out.

“Everything was pretty nerve-wrecking honestly,” he laughs.

“But the weather was the only downfall. We didn’t really have any major issues or problems.

“Yet that didn’t stop us from running around like headless chooks.”

Created by Brendon and Bruce Gunter, the duo say the show was created amidst a “truck show drought” plaguing NSW.

“There’s no truck show in Sydney anymore, nothing even truck related,” Brendon says.

they want to go to one, so we found the little hole in the market and tried to fix it.”

Sydney hasn’t seen a truck show of this size since The Working Truck Show in Penrith that was last run in 2019.

Sydney TruckFest combined the best of the industry, with a special focus on new vehicles, trailing equipment and services dedicated to the road transport industry.

“Whether you're a large fleet owner, single owner operator or just a driver even, there would be something here that you can get involved with.”

One of the drawcards of the Hawkesbury

Showgrounds was the Yennora Woolsheds, famously used to play host to the industry for years.

The woolsheds were transformed into a time capsule with period specific vehicles, hay bales, plastic sheep and more.

“The display was just amazing. I have never seen, and don’t think there has ever been a collection of trucks like this all put together,” Brendon says.

Another amazing display was seen in the truck entries, with the rigs battling it out for the top three trophies.

organisers were overwhelmed with messages and calls asking for it to be included.

“We were getting pressured,” Brendon laughs. “The public spoke so of course we had to act on it.”

The Show ‘n’ Shine was open to all trucks of every size, shape, year and model, with a First, Second and Third place awarded.

Judging was solely up to the public, with QR codes scattered around the grounds to cast votes.

The Silverback Armour ‘Beast of the Show’ was ultimately taken by Pace Drilling and their Kenworth T909.

Closing in on second was Matty Bowler and his Kenworth 409 SAR with the third-place trophy finding home with Mark Galea and his Peterbilt.

“We received great feedback overall. The camaraderie was felt everywhere, and everything was so fantastic,” Brendon says. With the success of the event evident, Sydney residents can breathe easier knowing this truck show is here to stay.

“We are looking at doing it every second year, opposite to the Brisbane Show,” he says.

“We’ve already pencilled in dates with the venue, aiming for March 2026.”

Planning is well underway for this year’s Casino Truck Show

The countdown is on with just over 60 days left until the NSW town of Casino plays host to one of the biggest truck shows in the southern hemisphere.

An unmissable highlight on the calendar of truck enthusiasts across the nation, the 2024 North Coast Petroleum Casino Truck Show will be held in the town’s CBD on Saturday, August 3, and promises to be an inspiring showcase of innovation, performance and community.

Richmond Valley Council’s acting general manager Angela Jones says last year’s show was the biggest yet with more than 600 trucks on display and an estimated 14,000 people attending.

With the expectation of a similar size

event this year, intensive re-mapping of the Casino CBD had been undertaken to ensure all attendees will fit comfortably.

Jones says the Casino Truck Show was not just a celebration of trucks; it was a celebration of the pride, passion and dedication shown by the men and women of the transport industry as a whole.

“As we prepare to welcome attendees and trucks from across the nation, we would like to express our appreciation for the unwavering support and collaboration of the Truck Show’s sponsors,” Jones says.

“We look forward to celebrating the success of this year’s event and to continuing our partnerships in the future.”

Three new trophy categories have been included this year – Show Truck Champions, Sensational Six and Great Eight, bringing the total to 14, equating to more than 70 trophies up for grabs.

For eager truckies itching to get their hands on one of the coveted titles, now is the time to start prepping.

The Casino Truck Show will be partnering with the leading charity changing the face of men’s health, Movember, and urge attendees to stay tuned for some exciting announcements in this space.

with entertainment from Mossy Rocks and the Tony Q Band set to rock two separate stages.

The kiddos haven’t been forgotten, with amusements rides and face painting set to keep them entertained all day long.

There will also be exhibitors’ showcasing industry-related products and services.

And just when you think it’s all over, J&J Rodeo will be putting on a spectacular Bull Ride under the roof of the new arena at the Casino Showground and Racecourse.

The ever-popular street parade starts at 10am, with the trophy presentation at 3pm.

Smoke AND STEAM AT HEYFIELD

The Heyfield Vintage Machinery Rally started off small and simple, in the tiny Victorian town of the same name more than 40 years ago.

While technically it began as a part of the Heyfield Timber Festival, which draws enthusiasts from all over Australia, it has grown into its own since the ‘90s.

So much so that organiser and longstanding Heyfield Vintage Machinery Club member Barb Cook says this year’s event was one of the rally’s biggest turnouts yet.

More than 250 people showed up across

May 18-19 with displays of vintage machinery including trucks, stationary steam engines, tractors, vintage cars, working horses, motorbikes and more for spectators to ogle at.

It was a prime showing of years gone by, Barb explains, on a day when the local community gets to revere the history of steam and machines.

“People came from all around Victoria, some from New South Wales, one from South Australia and we even had people from Tasmania,” she says.

“Some of them even came with displays. It was just amazing.

“All the club members are going around with big heads, just with pride. We’ve only got 70 members in the club, and we’ve got a small committee.

“To pull it off with the grounds all packed up and the last of the machinery going home on the Monday after the weekend and deliver this for people to enjoy, it’s a credit to their hard work.”

Other activities throughout the weekend included the tractor pull – a “crowd pleaser”, Barb assures – with most of the 94 tractors that arrived on the Saturday taking part.

It was a good year for truck lovers to get to the rally, with special guests joining the Machinery Club on the weekend.

“The local Caterpillar Club were there displaying for the first time,” Barb says.

“They brought their tent with them. The army trucks are beautiful. One of our members restored a Blitz, and it looked beautiful.”

With no awards to be handed out and just a modest $10 to pay for entry at the door – with kids going free – the community aspect of the rally was what most important to the organisers.

The Machinery Club works hard to keep the history of all things mechanical in Australia in the public eye, to allow younger people to understand and appreciate where towns like the barely 2,000 people-strong Heyfield came from.

Barb was even able to show her pride and joy, ‘Ruby’, a 1915 seven horsepower (yes, seven!) Marshall traction engine.

A shorter journey for road standards reform is achievable

The journey to delivering better policy outcomes can feel like a long and winding road.

The reform of the Heavy Vehicle National Law is a good example. The HVNL review has stretched on for six years and governments recently gave themselves another extension. New legislation will not pass parliament until 2025, at the earliest.

You don’t have to look hard to find a longer running journey where industry is yet to see meaningful outcomes delivered on the ground.

Heavy Vehicle Road Reform (HVRR) focuses on how heavy vehicle charges are determined and infrastructure spending is made. It has been in the too-hard basket for 17 years.

In 2007, the Productivity Commission found heavy vehicles are the logical starting point for road user charging and investment reform.

Responding to the Commission’s report, the then Council of Australian Governments (COAG), agreed to a three-phase reform plan, the COAG Road Reform Plan.

2009 brought an initial report and by 2011 a feasibility study was delivered. In 2012, five years into the journey, the program was renamed to Heavy Vehicle Charging and Investment (HVCI).

HVCI had a short life in terms of branding, ultimately becoming Heavy Vehicle Road Reform (HVRR) by 2014.

And while COAG did not survive the COVID pandemic (replaced by National

Cabinet), HVRR is still with us today. 17 long years with little delivery.

In 2017, a detailed consultation occurred focused on setting up independent price regulation of heavy vehicle charges. At the time, NatRoad said the reform was long overdue. Nothing came of this consultation.

In 2020, further consultation was undertaken for the HVRR, resulting in a 2021 pathway agreed by ministers. The steps in this pathway have not been achieved.

The introduction of National Service Level Standards Framework (NSLSF) is one of the first steps in the pathway.

The NSLSF would provide clear and transparent metrics on the road and facility quality standards transport operators experience firsthand every day. Standards should be established for road quality, road safety, provision of rest areas, and heavy vehicle access, placing priority on road maintenance.

The standards were intended to be implemented by 2024 but remain on the drawing board.

By shining a light on the state of our roads we can utilise evidence based data to prioritise road funding where it is needed most and fixing gaps in road quality.

There have been numerous reports concluding the way road projects are selected for funding needs reform. Record funding levels will achieve little if the right priorities are not being addressed.

This is why HVRR is important and cannot be left unrealised. It is about delivering better-quality roads, improving safety, and productivity for all road users.

NatRoad makes the case for moving forward with the NSLSF, as the first step, to guide infrastructure investment decisions by no later than 2025. This is achievable by establishing a phased approach starting with the national highways and key freight routes.

If governments don’t make the decision to prioritise implementation of service level standards, then we’ll get to the 20-year reform anniversary with nothing to show.

Our drivers and the public deserve better. It is time to prioritise implementation of service levels to deliver better quality and safer roads.

Remember the time when hiring a limousine for formal transportation was the coolest thing imaginable?

Or maybe your uncle’s friend’s cousin had an old Monaro he hired out for just these very moments?

Well, it seems nowadays, teens about to embark on the final chapter of high school prefer a new method of showing up… in trucks.

Klaudia Carroll’s grand entrance to her high school formal recently blew up on TikTok, garnering over 2.7 million views and 316,000 likes.

Trucking runs in the Carroll blood, with her father Troy and her grandfather all being involved in the transport industry.

Klaudia says she has always appreciated the work her father has done, and when it came to choosing her ride for the big day, there was no other choice.

“It was my idea,” she says.

“I told him that I wanted to do it to show my appreciation and respect for his company and how much that it has done for the family.

“I loved getting to show off one of his trucks and be like, my dad's pretty cool. He's done this all on his own.”

Troy now has a fleet boasting 12 trucks, with this particular Kenworth 610 SAR dedicated to his wife.

“Dad used to be involved in motocross, racing for and managing Kawasaki teams,” Klaudia says.

“But then he gave that up in 2017 so he could spend more time with the family, and that is when he started Carroll Group Aus.”

Enamoured by the large rigs and personalised signwriting, Klaudia says she became interested in trucks right away.

“I just thought they were super cool. We were always around them.”

“When I was younger and dad was just starting the business, he used to do a lot of local trips, Gold Coast to Toowoomba and back and similar runs.

“I used to go with him and it was always

Drawing together elements from each family member, Troy says it made the moment even more special.

“I was so honoured she even asked me to drive her in that truck,” he says.

“As soon as she told me, I immediately pulled it off the road and started polishing it up and got it looking all good for the event.”

Onlookers were awed as the family pulled up, young kids fascinated by the air horn and lights.

“It was pretty special,” Troy says. “It was really good to see that our industry still

makes an impact on young kids coming through.”

Troy got quite emotional seeing his daughter in the truck, proud of the woman she had become.

“It was a very proud dad moment. Seeing one of your trucks roll in and your daughter jump out, it was very special,” he says.

“And it’s nice to see she’s still got a bit of country left in her,” he laughs.

Swapping her heels for new Ariat boots when it came time to dance, Klaudia says her formal experience was a dream.

“It was everything I wanted it to be.”

Since uploading the video, Klaudia says her dad and her have bonded over watching the reactions online.

“Dad will often pull it up and get super excited because the views or likes have gone up,” she laughs.

“We never would have expected that reaction online and it’s just added to the experience as a whole.”

The Giacci family’s special “Flintstone” Mack found its way back to them in a lucky twist of fate

It's been a long road to restoration for the R600, but it was worth it

The Giacci family’s beautifully restored 1966 Mack R600 isn’t just nice to look at – it has been on an extraordinary odyssey, spanning multiple decades and continents.

The “Flintstone” truck won Best Vintage Mack at this year’s WA Mack Muster and Truck Show, and James Giacci tells Deals on Wheels that they couldn’t be prouder.

“The Mack is very special to our family,” he says.

“My grandfather imported it from the US back in 1968 – and it has found its way back to us without us even having to look for it.”

James Giacci’s grandfather is Mario Giacci, an Italian immigrant who started a small transport business with his family back in the 1950s.

That business, which was named Giacci

Bros, grew from humble beginnings in Bunbury, WA to operating across Australia.

In 2004, Mario founded another company – MGM Group – with his daughter Giuditta and son Michael.

Giacci Bros was sold to Qube Holdings in 2014, but MGM Group has seen huge growth, with a bulk division (MGM Bulk) being added in 2015.

Mario is now something of legend in the trucking industry, especially in WA – and at 85 years old, he’s still very active in the business.

The R600 Mack was one of the first semi trucks he ever bought, and it was totally by chance that it came back into the family’s possession.

“The R600 was our family’s first American Mack, imported directly from the Mack factory in Allentown, Pennsylvania in the US,” James says.

“It was my grandfather’s truck at the time, and clad in our family’s iconic green, white and black.”

For the Giaccis, the Flintstone Mack was more than just a vehicle – it was a symbol of their company’s growing aspirations.

But as the company expanded, they needed to modernise their fleet.

So they sold the truck and it went to the East coast, where it was put to work for multiple companies over the years.

“Initially, it was used to cart grain for Jones

“After that, the truck was doing some farm work for a local farmer in Queensland.”

The Mack was licensed until 2006, and in 2012 it was auctioned off, finding itself in the stewardship of Melrose Cranes in NSW.

They had big plans to restore it, but life got in the way and it gathered dust in the corner of their shed for many years.

Eventually, the truck was rescued by a Mack enthusiast called Dallas Fabian.

“He did some digging and found out that the truck had been issued to Giacci Bros from the Mack factory in the US back in the day,” James says.

“He got in contact with our family because he wanted to see photos of how the truck was presented when it first got to Australia.

“The colour scheme had changed mutliple times over the years and he wanted to restore it to its original glory.”

When the Giaccis saw the truck in question, they realised that it was Mario’s old rig.

“We recognised it because my grandfather welded the bullbar with his hands and it still had this ugly bullbar on it,” James says.

“Once we realised the significance of the truck, Dallas agreed to sell the truck back to us.”

The Giacci family were reunited with the truck in 2017, but it’s been a long road to getting it restored.

“The responsibility for restoring it fell on the shoulders of “Shotgun” Charlie, a Mack restoration expert.

“He stripped it down into a thousand pieces and was getting ready to put it all back together again.

“Unfortunately, he ended up passing away during the process, and receivers came in and froze all his assets – including the truck and all the pieces.”

The truck needed a lot of work when it found its way back to the Giaccis

The Giacci family had to go to auction and buy the truck back yet again, and spent over two years dealing with lawyers, trying to prove that the parts belonged to them.

Once they finally got all the pieces back, they handed it over to City Panel Beaters in Bayswater, who performed a full restoration from the ground up.

“Everything is OEM+ to the era,” James says.

“They did a fantastic job, it probably looks better now than when it came out of the factory!”

James says his grandad has incredible attention to detail when it comes to his trucks.

“As an example, the fuel tank had a dent in it,” he says.

“When it was being rebuilt, they told us that the fuel tank was damaged and it would be a lot easier and cheaper to get a replacement than to repair it.

“My grandfather said they had to repair it because when he was a kid, his left foot used to step up on that fuel tank as he would climb into the truck to start his shift.

“He didn’t care if it cost $15,000 to repair it!”

The highlight of the Mack’s journey postrestoration has been its presentation at the WA Mack Muster and Truck Show, where it caught the eye of the judges.

James said the family were delighted to go home with the award for Best Vintage Mack, and they have big plans for showing off the truck in the near future.

“We’re going to be taking it to local truck shows and meets, and creating some cool content around it.

“We’re also working on a short film about the story of the truck.

“Finally, we are building a new workshop in Bunbury, and we plan to have the truck on display in the office.

“That way the general public can come in and have a look at this piece of transport history!”

When it comes to Supercar racing, not all of the competition is on the track

Supercars race weekends are well and truly in swing for 2024, as the Championship enters into its 26th edition.

Races have already toured across Australia and New Zealand, from the opener in Bathurst to Melbourne, then Sydney, and the most recent event in Perth.

While most would know the sport for its cars first and foremost, it is just another part of Australia that is kept moving by trucks.

Heavy vehicle manufacturer Hino is one of many sponsors that helps Supercars races to be what they are, and not only when things go wrong.

You may have seen a Hino recovery truck out on the track before responding to an incident or crash to tow a driver in trouble, but there is much more to the company’s partnership with Supercars.

“If you watch a Supercar weekend, you'll see some signage, you will see the Hino Hub, you'll see our truck at the recovery team, the Hino recovery team supporting the recovery of crashed vehicles. And then we do some activation on race weekends.

“There's very prominent signage particularly around at Bathurst on Conrod Straight.”

The recovery side of the partnership sees the company provide a 500 Series Crew Cab to help move damaged vehicles off the track.

The truck will travel around from place to place, covering serious ground across Australia but continuing to do its job on race days.

Hino is once again the official truck supplier for medium and light trucks, and has been involved with the sport in some capacity for nine years now.

Hino Australia president and CEO Richard Emery describes the partnership with the Supercars Championship as the company’s “largest single sponsorship”.

“It's a multifaceted relationship,” he explains.

“It helps that there is significant synergy in the audiences in terms of our customer base.

“That particular truck has been used for five years now in a row, so we're looking to change that up a little bit over the next 12 to 18 months,” Emery says.

“We supply that that vehicle to every race weekend. It's used, among others, because obviously, they need more than one truck.

“There’s also the sponsorship with the recovery team, it's called the Hino Recovery Team. They're mostly volunteers, so we support that volunteer group that runs the recovery team. And in that it would make sense for us to provide them with a tilt tray that they could use on race weekends. It's

one of about five or six that they use over the weekend.

“Luckily for us, the tilt tray industry, we're quite strong in. Most of the other tilt trays that happened to be used on race weekends, tend to be Hinos as well, and they're different.

“They might be not necessarily a crew cab, but for us, it's not so much about the specific model. It's about us being seen on track supporting the recovery team and the volunteers as part of our multifaceted relationship with the sport.”

Out on the grid

Another major part of Hino’s involvement in the Supercars Championship is its sponsor of Team 18, one of the competing racing teams.

The team consists of drivers David Reynolds and 2015 Championship winner Mark Winterbottom who drive a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

The Camaro prominently features Hino branding as a part of its livery, on the front scallops, rear quarter and rear number plate.

“Team 18's relationship with us also goes back many, many years,” Emery says.

“There is a connection to our core ownership bases - Toyota Material Handlings and Toyota Financial Services are both also partners with Team 18 with Charlie Schwerkolt.

“We have some synergy there in the transport industry with Charlie’s business, Waverley Forklifts, being a fellow Toyota Group company.

“But also, many of Charlie's customers are also our customers. So from a business to business perspective, there was some strong synergy there for Team 18 versus some of the other teams on pit lane.

“If you're watching a weekend of motorsport, you see our signage, you see the Hino Hub, and then you see a race car running around with Hino on the side of it.

“We get our customers and our dealers access to the pit. They get to know Charlie, they get to know the drivers.

“This year, we're supporting Mark Winterbottom's car. He's been with the team nearly the whole time of our relationship with them.

“Last year, we took the opportunity to actually sponsor the whole vehicle. Hino Racing ran three or four rounds last year where we had the whole car.”

Hino Hub technology focus

Hino has also looked at a way to tie into the entertainment aspect of spectator sport with the introduction of the Hino Hub.

Broadcast in part during races and also available on the Supercars website, the hub

provides analysis and a technology-focused look at the races, breaking down the ins and outs of the tracks and moments during races.

Emery says the in-depth look into the sport has helped to tie Hino even further within the Supercars Championship.

“The Hino Hub has been a technical, critical part of our relationship,” he says.

“Supercars is kind of a bit old fashioned from a technology perspective. It's not exactly state of the art, automotive technology. It's old V8 engines. Yes, there's lots of sophistication in the vehicles themselves. But in terms of technology, where they shine or where their real connection is in data.

“We see ourselves as a technology leader in the trucking industry, both in terms of safety, technology, and Hino Connect and all the things that we do in terms of data.

“Hino Connect provides our owners with a whole range of data and information about their vehicle usage, and improving efficiency and all those sorts of things.

“So for us, if you take the sport at its core, to make sure that there was a connection to Hino where we see ourselves as a technology leader, the Hino Hub provides that.

“If you're going to watch Supercars, when you get into the technology, and when you get into the nitty gritty, that's when Hino comes into play.”

Hino says Supercars is its biggest single sponsorship deal and the team works hard to provide strong support for the drivers and their teams while making the most of the chance to share the Hino brand with racegoers

There’s no room for sleeping when it comes to driving a truck

Monash University’s 2023 Driving Health Study was another wakeup call to the transport industry.

With 62.1 per cent of truck drivers involved in the project reporting experiencing fatigue whilst working, it doesn’t take much to recognise the severity of the issue at hand.

Collectively, we’ve seen an increase of awareness and enforcement coming down on truckies over the past decade.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) even partnered with police across the country this past holiday season to conduct a national operation to combat fatigue-related heavy vehicle crashes.

NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto says heavy vehicle driver fatigue is one of the three biggest killers on our roads.

During the blitz, over 200 heavy vehicles were issued notices for breaches with more than 5,350 heavy vehicle intercepts across the Southern and Central Regions.

Work diary and fatigue-related education was provided in 623 of these intercepts.

What can be done

With fatigue management being a topic of discussion within the industry, we have also seen an increased interest in fatigue management technology.

These technologies hold considerable promise in detecting unsafe and high-risk driving behaviours with a high degree of specificity and sensitivity.

For many in the industry, these technologies have considerable potential to supplement or even supplant more traditional approaches to fatigue management.

One of the biggest players on the market right now is Seeing Machines, a technology company that specialises in fatigue management software and driver monitoring technology.

Seeing Machines GM Aftermarket Max Verberne says its most popular software, ‘Guardian’ has been scientifically proven to reduce the risks of fatigue related driving by more than 90 per cent.

How does it work

“AI built into Guardian monitors a driver’s attentiveness and intervenes if it detects a fatigue or distraction event,” Verberne explains.

“For distraction, the system tracks the head pose and eye gaze to determine where the driver is looking and maps that to a defined area of on-road or off-road so as to work out if they are looking at the road ahead.

“For fatigue, the algorithm looks at things like eye closure (duration, frequency and speed) as well as other driver behaviours to determine if they are drowsy or actually having a microsleep.

“From there, you can see how this process then advances to ensure that the risks associated with distracted or drowsy driving are mitigated.”

What’s the reception

In response to this new tech, the NHVR conducted a research report on the use of fatigue/distraction detection technology use in the Australian road freight transport sector.

A common theme for nearly all operators was that the main concern from drivers was that the technology would be used as a surveillance tool. Drivers reportedly did not like the idea of being watched all the time.

“Initially, there can be some resistance. There are many ‘myths’ around what a Driver Monitoring System like Guardian actually does,” Verberne says.

“For example, some people misconstrue this as a CCTV where they can be monitored remotely. This is not the case.

“Once drivers experience using a robust solution, where alerts are reliably triggered, resistance reduces significantly.

“Many drivers, especially those who experience a ‘near-miss’ due to a fatigue or distraction event, actually revere the technology and some have even claimed it is like having a mate in the cabin, keeping them awake and alert.”

With a fleet of over 150 trucks operating from distribution centres in Melbourne, Sydney, Wodonga and Brisbane, Don Watson Transport is one of Australia’s leading refrigerated transport companies.

The company had previously installed four way recording cameras to passively record the activities of their trucks.

Don Watson CEO Lyndon Watson says an incident with micro sleep prompted them to adopt permanent fatigue management technology across their fleet.

“We decided to roll it out, just immediately roll it out across every truck and every local truck and every rigid,” he says.

He says as a company, they must take every step to ensure a catastrophic event can be avoided.

“We have found that the active fatigue management tool that interacts with the driver in real time is an overall positive for the business.

“I'm sure that the technology is prompting drivers and reducing incidences that could have been something large.”

The initial pushback when introducing the technology was limited, with only 3-5 per cent of drivers presenting an issue with the software.

“Now that they've been in the vehicles for many years, I can't even recall the last time we had a driver that has issue with it,” he says.

“I think a lot of people are now aware that their personal car that they're driving have the same features. And so anything in regards to infrared light and such, it's just an element of a new vehicles.

“People have to learn to accept them as a part of the future.”

As a company Don Watson Transport has found success since implementing the technology, calling it a “net positive”.

“I feel that the technology is a net positive in regard to financial, but also net positive in regard to safety,” Watson says.

“But on top of that, it's largely the distributor (of the technology) that will vastly improve the experience that a user or customer is going to experience.

Watson says a lot of his positive experiences with the technology are largely due to their relationship with Connect Source in WA.

Moving forward

Verberne says the ideal goal is that “every single commercial vehicle will have some form of driver monitoring system technology either built into it or retrofitted in 10 years’ time.”

“As technology inside the cabin increases, the best outcome would be for DMS or Guardian technology to be fully integrated with our required systems, such as Telematics,” he says.

“This would streamline the interior cabins, tick the safety requirements and also meet the other needs of operators and drivers, delivered via Telematics and other technologies.”

From owning one truck back in the 90’s to starring in his own TV show, Don Madaferri and TCB Trans have gone the distance

Walking into the TCB Trans hub felt like entering a separate world.

Surrounded by red rigs and large sheds, they had created their own ecosystem where they could get everything done in one convenient spot.

Mechanical work? Check.

Truck wash? Check.

Man cave? In progress.

TCB Trans owner Don Madaferri says they could have never imagined this kind of success.

“I was born in the industry. My whole family were involved in the transport industry and since I was a little kid, I knew that’s what I wanted to do,” he says.

Driven with desire and an urge to prove himself, Don started small back in 1997 with one singular truck.

“I just kept buying another truck and another truck. We ended up having to hire a little block in Dandenong.”

It wasn’t long that with the trucks and gear, Don had grown out of that place too.

“We grew with our customers. If they were going onto their next level, so would we.”

But with fleet growth, comes growth in every department.

“We had to sit down and figure out what to do because everything was just moving too quick around us.”

“We needed somewhere to fit administration, payroll, maintenance and all of that.”

That’s how they stumbled across their now home in Dandenong.

Cabover or long-bonnet? You choose

“I kept the truck in the driveway at home and let me tell you, the neighbours weren’t happy with me,” he laughs.

“There were oil leaks and stuff like that and they made it very clear they didn’t like it there.”

Unswayed by the negativity, Don kept his eye on the prize, slowly building up his fleet.

“To be honest, when I was a kid, I always wanted five trucks,” Don says.

“I’m not really sure why I was so set on the number five, but that was my dream for as long as I could remember.”

Little Don would be surprised to see he surpassed that number, with a whopping 64

“I always wanted my own little building with my name on it, but I was never expecting this.”

But Melbourne isn’t where this story ends.

Growing with their clients, TCB has seen the expansion of their business into Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.

“We never planned for this, but they were great decisions.”

Like many truckies, Phill Campbell has a soft spot for nostalgia. So, when the 66-year-old came across the first truck he ever drove – a 1973 D1950 International – he had to have it.

“I came across it by chance,” he says.

“I knew where it was sold back in the ‘80s, and then I heard a fellow I knew had a green D-Line International in his shed.

“I asked him to send me photos of it, and when I saw it, I knew it was my old truck.”

Campbell asked the owner to give him a call if he was ever interested in selling the rig, and as luck would have it, he didn’t have to wait long.

“He rang me back just a few weeks later

and said he would sell me the truck,” he says.

“Then it was time to restore it.”

The truck needed quite a bit of work, and being short on time, Campbell enlisted the help of talented truck restorer Andy McKenzie.

“Andy does a fair bit of that sort of work, so he knows what he’s doing,” he says.

“The truck was stripped right back to the chassis and sandblasted, and a new cab was put on it.”

Campbell wanted to keep the truck’s restoration as authentic as possible, to reflect how it looked when he drove it back in the ‘70s.

“We got Saunders Signs & Graphics to do the signwriting – they hand-painted it like it would have been done back in the day,” he says.

“Some parts were a bit hard to get, but Fleetparts in Toowoomba were able to get the rubbers and that sort of thing. Other parts were re-made.”

The truckie still drives full-time and owns two trucks in addition to the D-Line International: a 1971 C-Line International and a 2019 Kenworth 659.

The bright blue CD1840, known as “Blue Moon”, was also restored by Andy McKenzie, and Campbell is “very happy” with how it came out.

“I had the D-Line so I thought I’d do a C-Line to go with it!” he says.

“That one also needed to be stripped right back to the chassis and painted up, and it came out great.”

Campbell grew up on a farm and learned about trucking from his dad.

“We had a couple of trucks carting stock to Homebush at the time, and it just went from there,” he says.

His son Dean has carried on the family legacy, operating Campbell Transport with a fleet of 15-20 trucks.

“I was basically an owner-driver, but Dean has built a whole fleet,” he says.

“I’m happy I’m still driving at 66, I have no plans to retire fully but I might semi-retire.

“Restoring my first truck was something I wanted to do as I got older – it brings back a lot of memories.

“It’s a little slice of history.”

Developments in electric charging

The future of trucking is electric, and it's closer to home than you may realise.

A project conducted by Swinburne University in Melbourne, in collaboration with a number of energy and infrastructure groups, has received the green light for government funding to the tune of $3 million.

The research, led by New Energy Technology Research Group Professor Mehdi Seyedmahmoudian, will see the team of experts explore the viability of wireless charging for electric trucks in Australia.

It is technology that could do away with the need for electric trucks to be stuck at charging stations, wasting time and money, by implementing wireless charging into the nation’s roads.

How it will work and where it will be used is still up for debate – there are obvious and massive costs involved in tearing up the nation’s key freight routes to install it.

But successful trials in Sweden and the USA have experts optimistic about what it could look like in an Australian transport landscape.

Firstly though…

How does it work??

For road charging to work, there needs to be two key things – charging plates and systems in the road, and a ‘receiver’ inside the truck that can take in the electricity from the ground wirelessly.

When the truck drives along the road, it

can take in electricity while it drives through the bottom, charging the battery as it goes.

Rainer Knobloch, co-founder of NewVolt – a company working to create charging hubs across the nation – says that are still significant challenges that will be faced before any kind of wireless road charging is implemented in Australia, even with funding.

“Just like with anything, here, you have an infrastructure cost, and then you have the truck costs,” he explains.

“The challenge is that you are required to put plates and systems into the road. When a truck is at a standstill, there’s magnetic induction which is causing the charge there between the two. That's quite high performance from an induction perspective.

“Putting it on a road, comes with a few challenges on the infrastructure side, because Australia's roads, while in many instances are great, in others they're not. And so you've got a big infrastructure cost in rolling this out on the road.”

Putting batteries and the wireless charging technology into these trucks, or manufacturing trucks with them already inside, provides challenges of its own.

Manufacturers will either have to invest in the technology themselves, or companies will have to pop up that can install them.

“On the truck side, you've got all of these

trucks that we've seen in other markets, they're all coming to the country in the next 12 months, which is really, really exciting,” Knobloch says.

“The biggest challenge we've got particularly on those long haul routes is still that you're taking a bit of a payload penalty with the weight of that battery.

“We acknowledge this, it's part of the journey as part of thinking in delivering the lowest cost of goods from A to B in a net zero world.

“You can't replace the battery, and you're then also adding weight to this wireless induction technology that needs to sit inside the truck.

“That would be a concern to operators in terms of running the science on the on those payload penalty on those longer routes. That would be a big decision to make.”

The here and now

As the technology for wireless road charging develops, and the need for it grows, experts are confident we will see a greater investment in it.

However, there are issues that the Swinburne project can tackle directly, one of those being how fast trucks can actually be charged on the road.

charge can take depending on what kind of charger is used.

At a fast charge, Transport for NSW estimates it can take as little as an hour for a full charge, or could take as long as 16 hours at the slowest.

Knobloch says that while static chargers can go up to 150 kilowatts, that number diminishes significantly in road charging technology.

“Right now one of the biggest challenges we have is the power rating of charging,” he says.

“So if you look back at base charging, you can get 50 kilowatt charges, you can get up to 150. But all of a sudden, you start to hit your limits of what that actual site or premises can output as a whole.

“On the flip side, if you look at facilities like what NewVolt is looking towards building, you have very fast charging we'll have about eight to 10 days of 400 kilowatt charges.

“So now you're charging trucks in about an hour under if they're coming in at zero, and then eventually moving up to megawatt charging, which is 1000 or over, so one megawatt. And there you're charging trucks in 15 minutes or less.

“But the problem is, is that that is costly infrastructure. Not everyone was going to be able to afford that. We can't cover the planet in truck charging hubs.”

With the size of Australia, so much of road freight is moved along the same highways consistently.

Choosing where road charging technology would go, funding and logistics aside, is as big a challenge as anything else.

“The long term routes where you have to build into roads, you are running into giant infrastructure costs,” Knobloch says.

“You're ripping up roads to put this in. You then you then need to pull back and go, what is the overall cost benefit for this?

“So, if we think about the Hume, because we don't have unlimited money in this country, where's it best to deploy the taxpayer dollar? Is it in ripping up all of that road to run a wireless charging strip? Maybe.

“It could be a balance of that in certain sections where it makes sense. And then offsetting the infrastructure cost to electrify certain sites along the Hume with charging hubs on the other side.”

Feral FUN

Young children are known to say the strangest things, and sometimes those words go on to become part of a family legend forever more..

Usually if someone was to call your truck feral, you’d be annoyed and possibly try to start a fight.

But when your four old daughter calls your new passion project feral, you slap that on the side of the truck and give it its new name.

Meet The Feral.

Purchased 28 years ago from TNT, John Stracey’s 1982 White Road Boss is a showstopper.

While sparkling now, the Road Boss wasn’t always this top notch.

“It was in very poor condition when we got it. Very poor,” John says.

“When we unloaded it, my daughter who was only four or five at the time slipped her head of the window and told her mum that it looked a bit feral.”

“And that name just stuck.”

Sensing the overall negative reaction to the condition, John immediately dove into giving it a full makeover.

Working in the transport industry since 1972, he felt equipped enough to handle most of the heavy lifting himself, with some help from his co-workers of course.

“They probably didn’t like doing it, but they did it,” he chuckled.

“We had to pull the cab off and deal with all the rust to start.

“Then we re-wired, re-plumbed and did all the normal things you have to do.”

Luckily for John, the original Cummins 350 engine was in fighting condition.

“I like to try and keep everything as original as possible,” he says.

After all the internal work was done, John put up $14,000 for a stunning emerald green paint job.

“We got the tanks wrapped and put a Bigfoot tyre system on it to make it ride smoother.”

“It’s still got the old Hendrickson two spring rear suspension in it. It’s original.”

“Bit like me mate, very original,” he laughed.

After two decades of hard work, John decided the rig needed another spruce, and set out on re-doing her once more.

“It was starting to get a bit of rust back in the cab so we fixed that up,” he says. “The cab never came off this time.”

“She’s been all painted up and polished and is looking pristine.”

The White truck now looks brand new, with chrome so shiny it could send you blind.

It is decked out with beautiful scrollwork depicting John’s business, Stracey Transport and sports ‘The Feral’ loud and proud on the side.

After selling the water side of his business, The Feral doesn’t see the road as much as she used to yet has taken an interest in the truck shows.

“We’ve taken it down to one or two shows so far, like Lardner Park.”

“We got a good response from everyone.”

When spending weeks on the road, Tony Fulton knows he can always rely on his best friend

For hundreds of truckies around Australia, taking their dogs with them on the road is an everyday occurrence.

Providing that extra bit of comfort, support and love, it’s like bringing a piece of home with you.

Tony Fulton says he couldn’t imagine a day in the truck without his beloved dog,

“The Puppies,” and enjoys sharing their experiences on the road together online.

His Facebook page, Tones Truckin Stories has amassed a whopping 145,000 followers since he started posting six years ago.

But it was a bumpy road to get to where he is now.

“I wasn’t a born and bred truck driver like most of the drivers,” Tony says.

“When I was 18-19, I went out for a drive with

my cousin who was a driver and sitting in the passenger seat, I was pretty much sold instantly.”

Living in Corowa at the time, he decided to get his truck licence and start from there.

His first job was carting bagged mulch to Bunnings stores in Melbourne in a little 15-tonne truck.

“It was nothing too lavish,” he says. “Little bit of tipper work but that was my foot in the door.”

Tony then spent some time working for friends and other companies, before taking the plunge and buying a truck of his very own.

“My first truck was a second-hand Kenworth K108,” he says.

“For the first three months it was brilliant,

and then it turned into an absolute money pit,” he chuckles.

After having the truck for 12 months, Tony says, “the only way I was actually going to make money and not go broke was to buy a brand-new truck.”

And that he did, purchasing a brand-new Kenworth K200.

“While the new one was getting built, the K108’s engine blew up as well, so just one more last kick in the guts to send me on my way.”

Now in his dream truck, Tony started subcontracting for his mate for about three years and decided to start posting videos online of his journeys.

He had spent some time up in Darwin and Melbourne playing football, moving around and helping the teams out with their social media.

“I had a bit of an understanding of how it all worked,” he says.

“When I started working full-time in the transport industry, I noticed that everything surrounding the transport industry at the time was very negative.

“Whether it be in the media, or just in general, a lot of swearing, carrying on, racism, and I just thought I'd rather have the more positive and humorous side of truck driving finally shown.”

People quickly warmed to Tony’s lighthearted humour and his following began to grow.

Tony was on the up and up… until the pandemic hit.

was not willing to comply with.

“I had to turn my back on the industry for a while,” he says.

“I decided to sell the truck and trailer and just ride it out. Until we came back to a bit of normality I guess.”

A year after selling the truck, life slowly began to return to normal, and Tony was itching to get back behind the wheel.

“I started driving again for my mate at Dowell Towing, in a Volvo 700, and it’s been great.”

Sitting passenger in the Volvo is Tony’s pride and joy, The Puppies.

Adopted from the shelter since she was three months old, Tony says they have the tightest bond.

“A lot of people get thrown off by the name,” he laughs. “But it’s just one dog, a girl.”

Originally named Kelsey, Tony says the nickname came about from the baby talk he

would speak to her over the years.

“She's in the truck with me 99.9 per cent of the time,” he says.

“When I did have my own trucks there for about three or four years, I actually lived in the trucks full time. That was actually our home for a number of years.”

It took a while for The Puppies to warm up to the idea of a truck, with Tony saying she was quite apprehensive at the start.

“Now she just loves it. Even if we are at a yard or something she is always checking to make sure she is never left behind.”

Tony says she’s racked up over a million kilometres.

And it’s not just Tony who loves her presence, with his online following going crazy for the duo wherever they are.

In NSW there's a charity group dedicated to the health of regional pets

The Animal Welfare League of New South Wales has a big job to do making sure our furry friends stay happy and healthy all across the state.

It’s a task that can’t just be achieved through regular veterinary check-ups – they bring their services straight to the doors of pet owners in regional areas who may not have easy access or the means to navigate growing medical bills.

That’s where the animal care truck comes in.

On the road since 2019, truck coordinator Derek Thompson has been travelling with the truck for at least ’90 per cent of the time’, by his estimates.

The mobile vet clinic has been all over NSW in 2024 alone, and while it’s a logistical challenge, the benefits outweigh the difficulties.

“Literally getting the truck there, as a B double is difficult. You have to obey all the road rules around that. There’s some places where people reach out to us and ask us to come but we can’t get the truck in there. It’s a bit tricky.”

The Animal Welfare League NSW works alongside local transport business Clarke Trucking – based in Ingleburn – to get the truck moving.

As a volunteer-run organisation, they don’t have the means to purchase their own prime mover, but the team at Clarke Trucking is more than happy to accommodate.

“We’re based in Kemps Creek, and last year alone we went from Broken Hill all the way up to Lightning Ridge and then down to Albury and everywhere inbetween,” Thompson says.

“The main logistics is staff, because if we don’t have the staff there’s not much point in

with us. They get to know the ins and outs of the trailer and what we do. They know where to park us so we can get easy access into the truck.

“Their drivers quite like to do it because it’s something different for them. It’s not your normal pick the truck up from this yard and over to that yard.

“Whenever we’ve got a trip I try to keep a couple of months ahead and let them know where we’re going. They help me out with getting licences and permits to drive on certain roads if we have to.

“They come hook us up and drive us wherever we need to go.

“We have to juggle everything around. Weather is another thing, but you can’t help that one!

“You book these things and you’re in the middle of nowhere and if rains, you can’t just go ‘well we’ll come back tomorrow’. You’ve got to do what you can do while you’re there.”

Pets and vets

The goal of the Animal Welfare League these vet services to as many people and places as

they possibly can, even if they are limited in their resources to do so.

The trailers that the Clarke truck pulls contains all the necessary equipment for a number of veterinary procedures, performing minor surgeries, micro-chipping and vaccinations.

“We’ll pull up and be in an area for a couple of hours if we’re doing micro-chipping, whereas if we’re doing de-sexing or anything more complicated we’ll be there for a couple of days,”

Thompson explains.

“That’s our main role, is to educate people and help out where either there’s no vets or people can’t afford to go to a vet.

“Most people that come to us are pension card holders or people that can’t afford the costs of going to see a vet nowadays.”

Regional communities in particular face dangers when it comes to unvaccinated animals that more urban areas don’t.

Parvovirus, or parvo as it is more commonly known, is an extremely contagious virus that has mortality rates of up to 91 per cent in dogs.

Thompson says that the dangers faced for the pets of these communities are easy to

avoid, and a big part of why the Animal Welfare League does what they do.

“Parvo is probably the biggest disease in pets at the moment,” he says. If animals aren’t getting vaccinated against it, it only takes one animal to get it to sweep through a community. Parvo can stay in the ground for 12 months.

“If one dog has it and goes to a dog park and other dogs aren’t vaccinated, all of a sudden there’s an outbreak. This happens in a lot of places.

“If we’re able to come through once a year, if we can get the funds and get back to the same places, we can vaccinate all of them to stop those diseases getting around. It’s a big impact.

“It seems like a small thing for one day, but we see on average about 60-70 animals in a day. If we vaccinate them all it really does reduce the risk, as well as on the de-sexing side.

“If we can de-sex 10 stray cats, it can stop it from getting out of control. It reduces the amount of stray animals running around. If you work out the numbers in the long run, it makes a big impact for rural areas.”

For Thompson himself, working with

animals was always going to be the path he followed.

A “vet nurse by trade”, combining that with the help he can offer local communities through volunteer work makes for the perfect pair.

“It’s all about welfare. We get a lot of animals that don’t have owners,” Thompson says.

“They’re not going to get treatment any other way. Helping those ones that would otherwise be euthanised and put down is fulfilling.

“It’s great getting out and about and working with different pounds in different areas and trying to work with them and educate them on what we can do to help them.

“We’re educating the general public too. Every place keeps their animals totally differently.

“You’ve got your little toy poodles sitting on the couch and then kelpies that are running around the farms. You’re learning all the different ways people keep their animals.

“The thanks they give you when they’re there just to give their animals microchips and vaccinations and health checks for free is a great feeling.”

Social media is proving to be a useful tool for truckies chasing up to date information on their daily routes

While truckies are on the road, it can be hard to keep up to date and informed with all that is going on along the way.

From accident reports, bad weather conditions and other hazards, it’s imperative that our drivers can stay aware and stay safe.

In an attempt to make it easier, Facebook groups have blossomed over the years that show communities rallying together and updating everything online.

One of the most notable is On The Pads AUSTRALIA.

Taking inspiration from similar location based groups, On The Pads AUSTRALIA reports on what pads are hot/cold, any traffic hazards, accidents, floods etc. from across the country.

The group was created in November 2021 and currently has 16.3K members.

In the last month alone, over 1,200 posts have been made in the group from administrators and drivers alike.

Administrator Leanne Dyer says the groups are a helpful resource for not only truck drivers, but anyone on the road.

“I’m a truckie’s wife and I’ve always helped my other half with information when he’s on the road,” Leanne says.

“I started out with creating a local traffic group and then started helping out on On The Pads QLD-Drivers Only.”

After finding success there, Leanne says it was only fitting to start a nation-wide version that would combine all the states and territories.

“Things sort of snowballed from there and here I am,” she says.

“It gives me purpose every day, particularly since the kids grew up and left home.

“I enjoy what I do and it’s just a bonus that it helps drivers because they have enough to worry about.”

Leanne now dedicates a hefty amount of her personal time to not only the On The Pads groups, but a range of other helpful pages.

“I also created an industry jobs group and during COVID was asked to help with Truck drivers food, showers and reviews Australia wide.”

“I also co admin Transport Q&A with Shelley Mitchell where drivers can raise any issues and have a discussion.”

Originally created to help drivers and employers cope with the ever-changing face of Australian transport during the pandemic, the Transport Q&A page now serves as a place where drivers can discuss transport issues in a respectful manner.

Since its inception, the group has even garnered support from RFNSW and QTA, as well as Senator Glenn Sterle.

New groups and resources are constantly being created, catering to a truck driver’s every need.

Celebrating A CENTURY

After being burnt and forgotten, Wychy Hill Billy the Ford Model T has had the chance to start again

Celebrating 100 years of living is a milestone for anyone.

Usually followed by a party, cake and letter from the reigning monarch, it’s no small victory.

‘Wychy Hill Billy’ is a 1924 Ford Model T, this year celebrating its 100th birthday.

Owned lovingly by Adam Lovell, he says Wychy Hill Billy has lived more life than many people he knows.

“It’s been reborn three times in its life now,” he says. “It’s been put through the wringer.”

The truck started off its journey in 1924, being sold new in Geelong before moving over to Foster.

Used as a work truck for decades, Adam says it finally retired from the road in the late 70’s.

“It was unused for many years after that, parked up in the shed of the original owner’s son.”

After staring at the historical rig for years, the son finally decided to spruce up the neglected T, serving as a fun hobby.

“The Model T was put on the back burner while he tinkered with the ‘47 Mercury.”

However, Adam says he always shared a love of Model T’s.

“Max would always tell me stories of his father’s T truck they had on the farm as a kid. I was hooked after that,” he says.

After Max had finished playing with his Mercury, he indulged Adam’s desires and set about getting the T truck fired up and running.

“It came to life immediately.”

Luckily for Adam, most of the running gear was still in a restored state.

Elated at the prospect of this new project, Adam says he couldn’t have predicted what came next.

“One evening while Max was asleep, a fire broke out in the shed,” Adam says.

“The ‘47 Mercury was burnt to the ground along with the shed and all its contents.”

Wychy Hill Billy is celebrating 100 years of living

It wasn’t long after that however, that Wychy Hill Billy found itself parked up again for many years.

“Fast forward to 2010, Max Brumby, my brother-in-law, purchased the truck along

Repurposing old material gave Wychy that historical feel

Unable to shake the Model T from his mind, Adam decided it was time he gave the old girl a crack.

“I talked with Max and asked if I could purchase the old girl from him.”

“I grew up with him and he knows my love of Model T’s, so a price was agreed, and we went to Melbourne to bring it home to Wycheproof.”

Unimpressed with the previous attempts at building a new cabin, Adams first point of business was to dispose of the cabin and chuck the rolling chassis and cowl into the shed.

As most restorers know, finding time to work on projects can prove to be the biggest challenge, so when the pandemic had everyone staying at home, Adam knew this was his chance.

“The plan was to fully rebuild the old truck from the ground up as I have done on many restos in the past,” Adam says.

“But on closer inspection I found that the drivetrain was still in near perfect condition.”

Realising that he could now do the restoration on a budget, Adam decided to do up the truck in a patina style, along the lines of an old moonshine runner or Beverly Hillbilly.

“I had some great early photos of a state rivers T truck, so I went about copying the cabin from it.”

The flooring for the cab was repurposed Baltic pine that he had recently ripped out from his church’s renovation.

Next came the stake side bed which was recycled timber from the original body and leftovers from when his local police station carport was pulled down.

An old club lounge was sourced locally to make an interior.

“It all came together over 12 months. Nothing was wasted.”

This was the moment Wychy Hilly Billy was officially reborn.

Adam is now excited to be right by its side celebrating its 100th birthday.

“I hope I have done the old truck justice,” he says.

“It’s been reborn three times in its life now and will see us all out back in its new / old look for its 100-year anniversary.”

New basic option takes German manufacturer Mann-Filter’s air dryer cartridge line-up to four.

Mann-Filter has added a new basic air dryer cartridge to its line-up – adjusting the colours of its existing product line-up.

Mann-Hummel senior range manager for the automotive aftermarket Jörg Schömmel says the basic cartridge will be suitable for all applications with low compressed air requirements.

“It offers an optimal solution for continuous long-haul operation, where dry compressed air is important,” he says.

“Very little compressed air is consumed during long-haul use, meaning there is reduced abrasion of the compressor and therefore minimal oil entrainment.

Consequently, ‘marathon runners’ only need dry air, which is why the costeffective basic solution is adequate.

“For the drying process, our new, white air dryer cartridge is equipped with a powerful molecular screen,” he adds.

Mann-Filter’s expansion of its air dryer cartridge range to four will see the previously white standard cartridge now coloured black, which the company says will make it easier for customers to find the filter that best suits them.

Along with the white and black filters, Mann-Filter also has a silver cartridge with coalescing filter for improved system protection against harmful oil droplets, and a golden premium version with additional stage drying and optimised oil separation for protection under the toughest operating conditions.

Like any other filter, the air dryer cartridge must be replaced regularly in line with the replacement intervals specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Upgrading a standard cartridge to a cartridge with a coalescing filter is easy and improves the protection of systems operated with compressed air – especially the brake system, Mann-Filter says.

“Whatever our customers need, we have the right Mann-Filter air dryer cartridge in original equipment quality for almost every requirement,” Schömmel says.
