The TMHA apprentice was recently named NSW Rugby League Jersey Flegg Player of the Year

TMHA raider

Owen Pattie started his apprenticeship at TMHA’s Queanbeyan branch in 2023 after relocating to Canberra to play for the Raiders in the NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg sides.

The apprenticeship opportunity emerged through TMHA’s principal sponsorship of the Canberra Raiders.

TMHA President Steve Takacs says he has always believed that sponsorships are stronger when you work together as partners and this is a good example of that in action.

“Great sponsorships go further than just the logo on the jersey –they become genuine partnerships where you are always looking for opportunities to strengthen the

relationship and add greater value.”

“When we found out that Owen was interested in gaining trade qualifications, we jumped at the chance to introduce him to the TMHA apprenticeship program and he hasn’t looked back.”

The 18-year-old has balanced his football commitments and his apprenticeship with the support of TMHA and says he is grateful for the opportunity to build a trade skill and gain qualifications that will stay with him beyond his football career.

Grand prize

A lucky Hastings Deering customer has won a new Cat mini excavator through a competition designed to reward the business’ loyal customers

Hastings Deering customer Alzino & Co Earthmoving has gone home with a brand-new Caterpillar (Cat) 301.5 mini excavator, after winning a competition for the dealer’s valued customers.

Designed to reward a Hastings Deering customer, the promotion was the dealer’s first ever giveaway of a machine, requiring participants to purchase $2,000 worth of undercarriage parts to qualify for entry into the draw.

The addition of the Cat 301.5 mini excavator marks a significant milestone for Alzino & Co, being the 50th Cat machine in its fleet.

Alzino & Co workshop manager Irfan Galina says the business was shocked to end up winning the highly valued prize.

“This is the largest prize we’ve ever won, it was a brilliant competition,” he says.

“Our experience with purchasing from Hastings Deering has always been

daunting but I’ve found two second homes – one with the Raiders and one at TMHA.

“My mentor and the team at the Queanbeyan branch have been really supportive and I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to learn from them and work towards becoming a forklift technician.

“With the support of TMHA, I’ve been able to work on two goals by continuing to develop my football career while also building skills and a qualification that will stay with me for life.”

very good, the parts interpreters are very thorough and provide expert knowledge, which makes finding what we require easy and stress-free.”

Alzino & Co has been using Caterpillar machinery since 1980, when its owner Ernie Alzino purchased his first piece of equipment – a D7G Dozer.

With the competition requiring customers to purchase undercarriage parts, Hastings Deering large track type tractors product manager Scott Pattemore highlights the importance of investing in high quality undercarriage systems.

“Undercarriage components account for roughly 50 per cent of a machine’s total ownership and operating costs,” he says.

“When customers choose Cat undercarriage, they can rest assured they are investing in a premium-quality product backed by the extensive Hastings Deering network across Queensland and the Northern Territory.”

Powerful partnership

Thiess has taken delivery of the 6,000th Caterpillar D11 dozer made, marking a meaningful moment in its 90-year association with Caterpillar

Global mining services provider Thiess took delivery of the 6,000th Caterpillar (Cat) D11 dozer at its Lake Vermont mining operations in Queensland in September, another milestone in its 90year collaboration with Cat.

The 6,000th D11 dozer was shipped 15,000km from the Cat factory in Peoria, Illinois, USA, last year to Queensland, where dealer Hastings Deering delivered the machine to Thiess in the Bowen Basin mining region.

“The association with Cat goes back nine decades to 1934 when the fledging Thiess Bros business started with Caterpillar Model 15 and 22 tractors in their fleet,” Thiess executive chair and CEO Michael Wright says.

“As the company grew and took on bigger and bigger projects, the brothers progressively upsized, acquiring a Caterpillar D4, D6 and then a D8 – the most powerful dozer at the time.”

There are currently 310 Cat dozers across Thiess’ operations over seven countries, including six that are equipped with Cat’s MineStar Command for Dozing semi-autonomous tractor system (SATS).

Caterpillar Resource Industries’

group president Denise Johnson says she looks forward to growing the company’s relationship with Thiess.

“With innovation at their core, the Thiess team have embraced automation technologies beyond SATS for their D11 dozers to include command for drilling,” she says.

“They recently celebrated 1 million metres autonomously drilled using three Cat drills, and command for hauling to boost truck productivity through autonomous haulage.”

Hastings Deering CEO and managing director Mark Scott adds:

“The delivery of this new Caterpillar D11 dozer reflects our enduring shared commitment to quality and efficiency.

“Hastings Deering is proud to support Thiess across Queensland and the Northern Territory to increase productivity, reduce costs and introduce new technology.”

Amphibious dozer

Komatsu, in partnership with Asunaro Aoki Construction Co., has developed electric amphibious crawler dozers which are set to be unveiled next year.

The dozers will be officially released at the 2025 Future Society Showcase Project in Japan, which gets underway in April next year.

Komatsu first began mass production of radio-controlled amphibious bulldozers in 1971.

Asunaro Aoki Construction owns all five of these units still in operation today and has accumulated knowledge and construction technologies through more than 1,200 underwater construction projects, including post-disaster reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Together, Komatsu and Asunaro Aoki Construction are developing electric underwater construction robots equipped with automatic control and ICT functions that they say can be remotely operated without requiring skilled techniques, and which enable high-precision construction.

In July 2023, the concept machine was produced, and testing has been conducted in rivers and fishing ports.

The duo’s exhibit at next year’s Expo will focus on the theme “Underwater Construction of the Future: enabling anyone to contribute to protecting lives and livelihoods.”

The two companies will introduce this theme, highlighting their belief that it is possible to contribute to underwater construction through remote control operation from a safe and comfortable location, and even an office environment.

The exhibit will also aim to emphasise that such underwater construction contributes to disaster prevention and recovery, renewable energy and blue carbon initiatives, such as the creation of seagrass beds and tidal flats, to combat global warming. =

Increased dig

McCormack Industries, affectionately known as ‘the front-end loader people’, has been acquired by Digga Australia

Digga Australia Group has announced that it has acquired McCormack Industries Pty Ltd.

McCormack Industries has been a cornerstone of Australian manufacturing since 1984, Digga says, manufacturing cotton handling equipment, agricultural and earthmoving attachments and the front-end loaders that led to the company being known as “the frontend loader people”.

Located in Aubigny on the Queensland Darling Downs, McCormack Industries has grown from a small family-owned business into an industry leader focused on manufacturing quality and reliable agricultural and industrial attachments.

“We see this acquisition as a perfect fit for our business as an avid supporter of Australian manufacturing,” Digga Group CEO Zoe Conde says.

“McCormack Industries has built a strong brand in the agricultural and industrial attachments space, which is an area of products that Digga hasn’t had a strong focus on historically.”

The acquisition of McCormack Industries is a strategic alignment of shared values and goals, Digga announced, with both Digga Australia and McCormack Industries

being second generation familyowned businesses.

McCormack Industries’ products will continue to be manufactured out of its Aubigny factory with previous owner Brendan McCormack and his team staying on to continue to grow the brand.

McCormack Industries and Digga Australia sales will run independently from one another, ensuring that both brands remain running smoothly.

“We are excited to welcome Brendan and the entire McCormack team into the Digga family,” Conde says.

“With the addition of being a family owned and operated business with a 40-year history, we can relate to a number of the highs and lows that both businesses have faced over that period.

“We are excited to continue the McCormack legacy with the backing of the whole Digga Group.”

Rental Powerhouse

Yellowgate Group’s popular Rent Now, Buy Later solution proved to be the ideal solution for Bundanoon Sandstone Quarry’s machinery needs

If you’ve always believed that renting machinery instead of buying it outright is poor economics, then Yellowgate Group would have you think again.

The equipment rental specialist says that one of the biggest misconceptions throughout the equipment industry is asset hire equates to dead money.

National Sales Manager, Noel Rosario, says the notion is simply untrue.

“There are a variety of reasons that make renting machinery a better option compared to buying or using traditional financial instruments,” he said.

“For example, a business could be experiencing high growth today, but deep down they have a burning desire to eventually own the equipment outright tomorrow.

“They could be seeking a manageable operational expense that isn’t cash intensive up front; and is unlikely to affect their future borrowing capacity.

“Or they could be still setting up following a recent acquisition of a pre-existing business – and the

primary focus is to preserve working capital, reap the benefits of the asset immediately and capitalise on it later.

“They understand that access to the right equipment – through a flexible solution like our Rent Now Buy Later (RNBL) product - shouldn’t be a barrier to growth.”

The innovative solution provides a flexible option that sets clients on the path to future asset ownership.

Accumulated rental payments may contribute towards the overall cost, making it an appealing choice for those looking to eventually own the equipment.

“In addition to the flexibility of our product, it helps that we have built a reputation for deploying assets anywhere in Australia, fast,” Noel said.

“But most importantly, we’ve got the ability to grow with our customers businesses as they adjust their fleet requirements.”

The Bundanoon experience

One happy beneficiary of Yellowgate’s RNBL solution is Bundanoon Sandstone Quarry in the heart of the Southern Highlands in NSW.

The Liebherr machine with a saw attachment carves through the rocks at Bundanoon quarry

Travel out to the site and you can’t help but notice a big yellow machine in action, using a buzz saw attachment to carve rocks like a hot knife through butter.

The appliance is a Liebherr R 945 Excavator, which plays the primary role in extracting stone for all of the quarry’s products.

As Bundanoon Chief Executive Officer Troy Stratti explains, the three-metre Stratti rock saw is used to cut sandstone in-situ in a grid pattern.

“Bundanoon has some of the densest sandstone in Australia, but the power of the Liebherr allows us to cut with ease,” he said.

“Retrofitting the excavator to the rock saw has revolutionised our extraction process at Bundanoon.

“The implement is engineered for high torque at low speed, and the dedicated hydraulic pump of the Liebherr R 945 delivers consistent oil flow and pressure, free from interference by other control

movements in the excavator’s hydraulic circuit.

“With one of the three hydraulic pumps solely committed to the attachment circuit, we have been able to fully exploit this capability.

“By maximising the torque output of the saw — traditionally adjusted to suit various brands of excavators with lower torque output — we have significantly enhanced our cutting efficiency.”

Bundanoon boasts a storied history deeply intertwined with the fabric of Australia’s architectural heritage.

Established in 1850, it stands as one of the nation’s earliest sandstone enterprises, pioneering the extraction and refinement of the natural resource.

“Looking ahead, we plan to capitalise on the excavator’s versatility by retrofitting our dual and multi-blade saws as the quarry continues to develop,” Troy said.

“The unique benefits provided by the Liebherr R 945 have shaved months off our extraction process, underscoring its pivotal role in our operation’s success.”

Troy said it was also easy to teach new, youthful operators how to use the Liebherr technology.

“Developing a youthful team for the succession of the quarry is paramount to Bundanoon’s vision,” he said.

Partnering with the best Bundanoon General Manager

Brendan Matthews said that the procurement of the Liebherr R 945 has been critical in setting up Bundanoon Sandstone Quarry for growth.

“We thoroughly researched the entire market and considered a range of approaches to acquire our new equipment,” he said.

“One company stood out: Yellowgate. Their vision is to be

the partner of choice for Australian businesses who are looking for equipment to grow their business.

“Yellowgate caught the eye with their appetite to do business, willingness to support growing companies, and their detailed knowledge of mining equipment.

“The structure of the RNBL solution is financially attractive. Rental payments are considered an OPEX (Operational Expense) –making them tax-deductible; but those payments could become equity if we choose to purchase at the end of the 12-month rental agreement using our CAPEX (Capital Expense).”

Material Handling Division, Scott McClement, said the Generation 8 Liebherr crawler excavators such as the R 945 were “a look into the future”.

“Liebherr completely revised the basic concept of the machines in order to offer customers even higherperformance and more comfortable products,” he said.

“The highlights of the new crawler excavator generation include the higher engine power, the heavier counterweight for higher bucket capacities and minimal fuel consumption.

“Other innovations are the boom concept with modified head for better boom forces and the optimised load curve, which leads to fuel savings. All engines comply with the requirements of EU emission stage V.”

Scott said the new crawler excavators have higher digging forces and greater traction of the undercarriage, while the swing torque of the upper carriage was also optimised.

These improvements to the excavator result in higher performance and improve fuel efficiency.

“Low fuel consumption and enormously high-performance guarantee outstanding economic efficiency,” Scott said.

“In addition, these machines stand for high reliability and maximum comfort. These features

make Liebherr crawler excavators powerful, productive and efficient in mass earthmoving, material processing and particularly quarrying.”

There are four machine control systems available for the Liebherr G8 crawler excavators:

• 2D iCON IXE3 “3D Ready” passive Leica designed for Liebherr

• 2D iCON IXE3 “3D Ready” semi-automatic Leica designed for Liebherr

• 3D iCON IXE3 passive Leica designed for Liebherr

• 3D iCON IXE3 semi-automatic Leica designed for Liebherr

“The R 945 has great reliability and productivity for working up to 12 hours per day on sandstone quarrying, which Bundanoon valued,” Scott said.

“Liebherr is committed to supporting our customers throughout the purchasing process to ensure they receive our machines at the optimal time for their business.

“This support may come directly from Liebherr or through facilitating processes with third parties such as Yellowgate.”

For Troy and Brendan, they know that the Yellowgate plan definitely helps set up the quarry for future growth and consolidation.

“While Bundanoon Sandstone Quarry is not a new mining site, the resource that sits beneath our 160acre property is expansive and will

The Liebherr R945 Excavator plays the primary role in extracting stone for all the quarry’s products

see the business through another 175 years,” Troy said.

“The vision of Bundanoon Sandstone is to preserve the stone industry for generations to come.

“What that means is supplying world class sandstone to market, and being a leader in defining quality, as well as developing Australia’s masons of the future by transferring knowledge and techniques to the next generation.”

Brendan said because Yellowgate truly understood business and equipment, Bundanoon sees huge potential to continue the partnership for many years.

“In fact, we believe that we will grow faster and be able to take on more opportunities with Yellowgate as our partner,” he said.

“Big projects require big equipment. Yellowgate has the vision to assess project feasibility.

“They are willing to support us by acquiring equipment using their RNBL product.”

Ohhhhh Deere

With heavy investment in John Deere earthmoving machinery and parts, Phil Hunt Parts is the one-stop shop for all things John Deere

When Earthmovers & Excavators last caught up with Phil Hunt Parts owner Brendan Hunt, the company had approximately 400,000 line items of new and used spare parts in stock.

Providing parts for numerous earthmoving equipment brands, from Allis-Chalmers and Fiat Allis to Hanomag, John Deere and more, the family-owned and run business has since grown, with more than 500,000 parts on offer.

Based in Tamworth, New South Wales, Phil Hunt Parts has longfocused on dismantling AllisChalmers and Fiat Allis machines for parts, with Brendan describing these

brands as the business’ ‘bread and butter’.

“We’ve been working with AllisChalmers and Fiat Allis machines for a very long time and it’s still a huge part of our business,” he says.

With both companies no longer manufacturing new machines, Brendan set about taking on another brand that would future proof his business and landed on John Deere’s earthmoving equipment.

Genuinely impressed with the quality, workmanship and ability to maintain its products, Brendan decided he wanted to be involved with John Deere somehow.

This came in the form of heavy investment in the company’s earthmoving product line, predominately focusing on John Deere’s graders, but also its dozers, wheel loaders and scrapers.

“We believe John Deere machines are going to be the future of Phil Hunt Parts,” Brendan says.

First Grade

Phil Hunt Parts has recently welcomed two new John Deere graders ready for dismantling, a 770GP and a 772GP, with the latter being the most current model according to Brendan.

Phil Hunt Parts was already stocking new moldboards, ripper shanks and wheel rims – but these dismantled machines have added a good used option to its ever-growing list of parts.

“When we’ve finished dismantling, there’s virtually nothing left of the original grader, except the bare frame,” Brendan says.

“These dismantled machines allow

customers to purchase everything from the front counterweight to the rear ripper assembly – and literally everything in between.”

Brendan adds that feedback from customers has been overwhelming so far, with many also highly fond of the John Deere brand, and thrilled to have someone they know and trust to deal with.

“Nearly all of our customers have started off with other-branded graders, but have ended up preferring John Deere,” he says.

“They’re very impressive machines and bullet proof for blokes in the bush.”

Parts offering

All used parts offered by Phil Hunt Parts are purely from dismantled machines, with Brendan saying that more than 50 John Deere graders have been dismantled to date.

From the older 570 and 670 models, right through to the newest 770GP and 772GP’s, Phil Hunt Parts has John Deere graders tucked away in every corner.

“We are constantly chasing new stock for our dismantling yard and invest heavily, to make sure we have a quality offering of parts for our customer base, both here in Australia and overseas,” Brendan says.

Not only does Phil Hunt Parts stock used components, but it also sources and stocks new parts from all over the world.

With trusted suppliers it has been dealing with for years, Brendan says the business brings in new parts from overseas regularly.

“It gives our customers a good quality aftermarket option they can rely on,” he says.

Phil Hunt Parts has not limited itself to supporting customers here in Australia, as it also regularly exports overseas.

Just recently, a John Deere housing was sent to a customer based in Texas, USA – emphasising the need for quality earthmoving parts everywhere, even in Deere’s home country.

“The market for good used parts is as important as it has ever been,” Brendan says.

“Everybody is looking to keep their machines running for sensible money.”

Family-oriented

Phil Hunt, Brendan’s father, originally started the business in 1992, with Brendan taking over in 2012.

Being family-owned and run is a key point of difference for the business, with Brendan saying that his customers are always presented

with genuine and real product knowledge.

This can be extended to helping diagnose problems with customers’ machines, and then supplying the right parts to suit.

“The fact that we’re familyowned and run means we can build a personal relationship with customers, that a larger business just can’t,” he says.

Rather than speaking to people ‘who punch in part numbers and spit out a price’, Brendan says his customers are always presented with the same friendly and trusted team over the phone every time they call.

“This carries a huge amount of weight, people like to deal with people they know and trust,” he says.

“At Phil Hunt Parts, our customers know they are dealing with a familyowned and run business, with attention to detail and fair dinkum product knowledge.”

Fortunately, Onetrak has a network of branches that cater for these requirements and are backed by Anaconda’s dedication to their customers.

Safety Features

Ensure the safety of your employees and the environment by choosing machinery equipped with strong safety features.

Seek out features such as emergency stop buttons, safety guards, automatic shut-off systems, good visibility and user-friendly interfaces to reduce the chances of accidents.

Efficient material handling

Sorting materials correctly is a crucial element of efficient recycling to enable smooth processing. Operational efficiency is vital in the recycling sector, ensuring waste materials are processed and recycled in the most resourceful and cost-effective way.

This includes streamlining processes like collection, sorting, storage and processing to maximise recycling volumes and reduce waste.

Consider conveyors, magnets and optical scanners to separate the recyclables and minimise manual handling, and consider the design layout to reduce re-handling.

Techniques

Consider:

• P roper positioning to maximise the reach, stability and capabilities of the machine

• Smooth control and steady movements, which can make for faster work, as this avoids inaccuracies and damaging equipment

• M inimising movement by planning ahead to reduce cycle times

The delivery of waste materials, especially C&D waste, can include bricks, concrete, soil, timber, metals with limited plastics, plasterboard, ceramics and paper.

For bricks and concrete, consider crushing and recycling these for another income stream.

This not only diverts waste from landfills but also provides a sustainable source of materials for future construction projects.

Soil and timber can be repurposed as well; soil may be enriched and used in landscaping or gardening, while timber can be processed into mulch or reclaimed for building purposes.

Metals, being highly recyclable, can be sorted and sold to recycling facilities, ensuring they are reused in manufacturing new products.

Limited plastics should be carefully segregated and sent to appropriate recycling centres to minimise environmental impact.

Plasterboard can be broken down and its gypsum content recycled for use in new plasterboard or as a soil conditioner.

Ceramics, although more challenging to recycle, can be crushed and used as aggregate in road construction or as a base material for new ceramic products.

Paper, one of the more straightforward materials to recycle, should be collected and sent to recycling plants where it can be pulped and transformed into new paper products.

Additionally, the plant may incorporate composting facilities for organic waste and advanced wasteto-energy systems to maximise resource recovery.

With minimal control over feed material, always be prepared for the worst-case scenario.

This includes implementing robust sorting and pre-processing systems to handle unexpected contaminants and varying material compositions.

By investing in versatile and adaptable technologies, the plant can ensure operational efficiency and maintain high standards of safety and environmental compliance.

Regularly review and optimise your processes.

By taking these proactive steps, you can create a resilient and sustainable operation that not only meets, but exceeds industry standards.

Changes

Pay attention to the seasons and local events, as they can greatly influence the types of waste generated.

For example, during the summer months, there might be an increase in plastic waste from outdoor activities and barbecues, after Easter there is more aluminium, after Christmas there is an influx of paper.

Similarly, during back-to-school season, you may notice a surge in discarded packaging from school supplies and electronics.

Understanding these patterns allows for better planning and resource allocation. It helps in optimising recycling processes, ensuring that the right machinery and manpower are available when needed most.

Onetrak’s Anaconda product line for the recycling industry offers a variety of screens such as trommels, scalping screens and finishing screens.

Additionally, Onetrak provides feeding conveyors, as well as tracked and wheeled conveyors.

If you are considering branching out into other sectors like concrete recycling, Onetrak’s selection of mobile crushers is tailored to suit your requirements.

Onetrak and Anaconda are an intelligent choice to manage your machinery requirements for waste and recycling needs.

Industry knowledge is priceless, especially when it is backed up with servicing Australia wide, and Onetrak is a supplier that prioritises your success by adding value over and above your initial purchase.

Going large

Austrak has consolidated its entire Wagga Wagga forklift fleet to Toyota Material Handling Australia products, evidence of a hugely a successful relationship with TMHA Austrak recently took delivery of two new heavy-duty 4FD120 forklifts, which feature a load capacity of up to 12,000kg

Australian rail infrastructure manufacturer Austrak has turned to the reliability, safety and service of Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) to help maximise the efficiency of its operations at its Wagga Wagga factory.

Austrak is a leader in the manufacture of heavy-duty prestressed concrete sleepers used in railway infrastructure and has the capacity to produce up to one million sleepers per year across three factories in Wagga Wagga, Geelong and Rockhampton.

Austrak recently took delivery of two new heavy-duty 4FD120 forklifts, which feature a load capacity of up to 12,000kg, making them perfect for hauling large concrete sleepers around the Wagga Wagga warehouse.

Consolidation

Furthermore, Austrak has consolidated its entire Wagga Wagga forklift fleet – totalling five units – to Toyota products, with two leased 2.5-tonne forklifts and one 8-tonne unit.

The company decided to add the two new 4FD120 units to its fleet as it is currently manufacturing rail sleepers for the Inland Rail project

– a 1,600km freight line stretching from Melbourne to Brisbane which requires huge amounts of sleeper movement and storage.

Austrak Wagga Wagga factory manager Jim Stevenson says the company wanted to consolidate its fleet into a single brand, and his experience with the reliability and performance of Toyota products gave TMHA the edge over its competitors.

“We’ve had a few Toyotas and through that relationship the decision was taken to purchase a couple of brand-new units, but also to transfer all our forklift fleet to Toyota,” Stevenson says.

“Previously, we’ve had a mix of suppliers in terms of brands and service, and the specification of those machines has been quite mixed, and in some cases, unsatisfactory.

“We’ve bought two bigger brandnew units, but we also have three other forklifts on site, and we’ve basically changed everything over to Toyota.”

Stevenson says there were multiple reasons why Austrak chose TMHA as its sole supplier for the Wagga Wagga factory.

“That decision was around the quality of the machine, the features that you get on the machine, and the after-purchase service and customer support is really good from Toyota.”

History

Stevenson has extensive experience with THMA products, using them in previous jobs before his factory manager role with Austrak.

Part of the reason for standardising Austrak’s fleet to Toyota forklifts was based on his history with the brand, experiencing first-hand the exceptional reliability and topclass service provided by THMA’s technicians and sales managers.

“The last site I was on, we had something like 15 or 20 units and they were all Toyota, and we had a strong relationship – I previously had really good service in that role,” he says.

“I tried different forklifts at different times, but in the end, Toyota really are the best units in my view – the most reliable. The service support is really good.

“I think from an all-round perspective Toyota seems to be at the pointy end, in my experience.”

TMHA’s team of technicians

Images: TMHA

have also done an admirable job of offering top-class service for Stevenson and Austrak.

“I’m really happy with the service and also the quality of the technician,” he adds.

“The guys Toyota have got are experienced, know what they’re doing, do a good job, clean up when they’re finished – I like what they bring to the table.”

When the decision was made by Austrak to standardise its forklift fleet to a single brand, it reached out to its three existing suppliers to determine which company would win its business.

A combination of factors helped sway the company to TMHA –not just the performance of the machines, but also the service provided which helped Austrak optimise its fleet.

“Essentially the features, the type of unit and the pricing from Toyota were very competitive,” Stevenson says.

“The other factor was they had an engineer come to the site, look at the lifting activities that we did, and we were looking to optimise – we didn’t want anything too big or small, and no one else was able to do that.

“The engineer looked at our operations, did some calculations and came back and said, ‘right, this is the best size forklift that will suit’, because we do have some physical constraints in terms of movement around the site, so that part of it was also positive.”

Safety

The addition of the new forklifts have provided Austrak operators and supervisors with valuable benefits not found on older machines, including PIN-code start-up and Toyota’s exclusive telematics “I_Site” fleet management system.

This provides supervisors with an array of valuable information, including fleet utilisation, downtime, OH&S incidents and breakdown information to ensure the fleet runs as smoothly as possible.

Furthermore, the ergonomics of the new forklifts make jobs easier and safer for operators.

“One of the significant comments

we’ve had from a safety perspective is that forward visibility is hugely improved over what we’ve had before,” Stevenson says.

“From my perspective, we load trucks, we move stuff around with people doing other bits and pieces –any time you improve visibility for the driver, that’s a good thing.”

Queanbeyan-based TMHA area service manager Nathan Charnock and his team have cultivated a strong relationship with Austrak and Stevenson, dropping in regularly to see how the business is travelling, and sometimes to just say hi.

Charnock ensured the delivery process of the new forklifts went as smoothly as possible, helping to brief Austrak’s operators and managers on the machinery’s features and systems and working to Austrak’s delivery process.

“The pre-delivery and delivery –they kept me in the loop with what was going on,” Stevenson recalls.

“We have a process too where we do a pre-mobilisation check sheet for the supplier to fill out, then when the equipment arrives we go through it to double-check and sign off, and that pre-mobilisation process went off without a hitch.

“So from that perspective it couldn’t have gone any better than what it did,” he adds.

“They were here on the day that they said, at the time that they said –all of that was good.”

Satisfaction

Overall Stevenson says he was very satisfied as a partner of Toyota, as evidenced by Austrak’s move to switch its entire Wagga Wagga fleet to TMHA.

“We really haven’t had any issues, and if we have we contact them,” he says.

“If we want any information about the machine or from a service perspective the response has been good, so I’m very happy.

“We’re finding reliability is great, service is good, so we’re more than happy.”

Stevenson has even put Austrak’s other factory managers in Victoria and Queensland in contact with Toyota, as the other factories are also looking to standardise their fleets.

“Geelong and Rockhampton are also looking at their fleets, and I’ve recommended Toyota to both those factory managers and have spoken to my contact, so the relevant Toyota salespeople in those states have been contacted already and the conversations are underway,” he says.

Crushing success

A Keestrack crusher is at the centre of a successful partnership between SMA (Screenmasters Australia) and Albury Quarries

In the competitive and demanding world of contract crushing, having the right equipment can make all the difference.

For Albury Quarries, founded by Dave and Andrea Dunstan, who returned to the Crushing Industry after a 20-year hiatus, the business has found success in its equipment through a strategic partnership with SMA.

Based in Albury, New South Wales (NSW), Albury Quarries specialises in crushing and cleanup operations for councils around Tamworth and Northwest NSW.

Starting with a single machine, Albury Quarries aimed to carve a niche in a competitive market but found it a challenge to find the right crushing solution.

Experiencing issues with other crushers, the business looked for a reliable, efficient and cost-effective option.

“We sought a machine that could minimise downtime and handle the rigorous demands of contract crushing, especially in wet weather conditions,” Dave says.

“The objective was to find a machine that could deliver high production rates with low maintenance requirements.”

Problem-solver

SMA national sales manager Ciaran

Lagan stepped in to address Albury Quarries’ needs and found a solution in the form of a Keestrack R6h Crusher, which he recommended after an initial meeting with Dave and Andrea.

Lagan recommended starting with a rental of the Keestrack R6h Impact Crusher. Pleased with the results, Albury Quarries later purchased a brand new R6h, which has been playing a critical role in the success of the business ever since.

The R6h presented impressive performance, handling large rocks and achieving high tonnage rates –even with wetter and stickier materials.

SMA says this specific unit is known for its enhanced horsepower – 120hp (88.3kW) more than its R6 predecessor.

It also offers increased production capabilities, especially in the challenging applications that Albury Quarries is accustomed to.

Some of the key features of the machine include:

- A 3 .1 metre double deck pre-screen, with belt underneath instead of a chute

- Powerful 757hp (556.8kW) Volvo engine and 6.5-tonne rotor drive, providing greater inertia and high torque for efficient and high-capacity crushing

- Being fitted with a 16 x 5 double deck

R6h impact crusher

after screen and swivelling return conveyor, giving the end user the ability to create up to two products in a closed circuit or three products in an open circuit

- Sealed bearings on all conveyors, minimising maintenance and daily greasing

- Steel hydraulic lines replace hydraulic hosing for better cooling, fewer leaks and lower maintenance costs

- Enabling users to replace the traditional crushing set up (jaw, cone and screen) with just one machine - Production of in-spec material (subject to material and application)

SMA says these traits make the R6h the most productive impactor on the market.

Using the R6h, Albury Quarries has been able to efficiently produce 20mm or 40mm road base materials, meeting high tonnage requirements consistently.

“The decision to invest in an R6h was not only influenced by previous problems with other crushers, but also the machine’s capacity, reliability and efficient operation in wet weather conditions,” Dave says.

“A huge reason for our success is SMA and its Keestrack Crusher.”

Sandy solution

Precisionscreen’s Sandscrew is an entry-level option for washing and grading sand, able to work in conjunction with the business’ stockpile conveyor range

Brisbane-based Precisonscreen offers its customers a variety of sand washing plants, with its cost effective, entry solution – the Sandscrew –proving to be a popular choice.

The efficient and low cost solution is used for washing and grading sand, and is described as an entry level option, due to its price point and low volume of water usage.

Precisionscreen’s chief operating officer Jonny McMurtry says sand can be used in a range of applications, from producing concrete sand to washed sand product for manufacturing bricks or asphalt, with the type and grade of sand determining which application the material is used in.

“When bricks and concrete are being produced, you have to have a certain type of washed sand and grading,” McMurtry says.

“A super fine sand might be used in bricks or masonry, whereas you’d use a coarser sand for the manufacturing of concrete.”

By washing the sand, McMurtry says unwanted particles such as clay, silt and dust are removed.

“The Sandscrew will essentially push the sand up, and then all that unwanted organics and fine material will slowly float down with the water and be transferred to ponds or other

settlement areas,” McMurtry says.

Wet materials enter the feed tube at the base of the screw and as the heavier particles sink to the bottom, they are pushed up a trough through a spiral screw.

Dewatering then occurs up the length of this channel until it is discharged at the end via a chute, creating a simple solution for sand classification.

All screws are driven hydraulically and can run off a screening plant’s powerpack or similar power source. The screw also has an adjustable overflow weir to help maximise the recovery of fines and control the discharge of wastewater.

Because sand is heavier than the water, it needs time to drop down, McMurtry says. By having the adjustable overflow weir, he adds that a greater volume of water and settling time is enabled.

“Anything that’s heavy drops low and gets screwed up the conveyor,” he says.

“If you had a smaller weir, you’d have choppy water that won’t allow the sand to fully settle, and it will just wash out over the top.”

Coupled up

Precionscreen’s SM stockpile conveyor range can also be coupled up

The Sandscrew is an entry level option for washing and grading sand

with the Sandscrew, as the perfect running mate.

Working together, the Sandscrew will wash the sand, drop it onto the conveyor, and then it can be stockpiled.

Precisionscreen offers various standard conveyors starting with the SM450 10m (30ft) conveyor with 4.5m stockpile height, the SM650 at 12.5m (40ft), the SM750 coming in at 15m (50ft) and the SM850 at 18m (60ft).

All conveyers are fully designed and manufactured in-house at Precisionscreen’s Brisbane workshop, so customers can be assured the machines are built for Australian conditions.

Key features include a hydraulic drive, poly rollers, triple seal bearings, return slides and the ability to work with imported and other existing machines.

“Our conveyors can be adapted to work with other branded machines that are already existing on a site,” McMurtry says.

The business’ SM conveyer stockpile range also offers customers versatility, with the ability to hire

these machines, and the option to purchase at the end of hire.

In addition to the standard conveyors, the business can also modify the machines to adapt to customer needs – providing further versatility.

This is emphasised by Precisionscreen’s new SM680 conveyor, that was designed and built specifically for one of the business’ clients in New Zealand.

The New Zealand-based client needed the conveyor to be fully galvanised and had specific

requirements for the length, 12.5m (40ft), and width, an 800mm belt.

Preicisonscreen had no problems with this, building the SM680 to the exact specifications – creating a modified version of the SM850, with a shortened length.

As an adapted version of the already existing product, the new name ‘SM680’ was given, with the ‘6’ representing a 6m stockpile height and the ‘80’ standing for the 800mm belt.

“Our customer had a need, we took on that work and understood

what they were looking for,” McMurtry says. “From the customer’s point of concept, we designed, manufactured, galvanised and shipped all within eight weeks.”

For more information on the Sandscrew and the SM conveyer stockpile range, visit www.precisionscreen.com.au or call 1800 727 991.

Once the sand is washed, the Sandscrew can drop it onto a conveyor, so it can be stockpiled

Complete portfolio

A recent restructure is helping ContiTech operations become even more customer-centric, allowing the company to showcase more of its wide range of products to customers

Continental may be more than 150 years old, but the company is still moving with the times – and a recent restructure within ContiTech has the potential to provide clients with even more choice and benefits.

Perhaps best known as one of the globe’s top tyre manufacturers, Continental was first established in Germany in 1871.

Today it is a leading heavy-duty industry manufacturer, boasting a wide range of products across the earthmoving, construction, mining and manufacturing sectors.

Continental supplies high quality hydraulic hoses for the earthmoving industry.

The company’s crimp fittings also provide maximum coupling retention through extensive design and impulse testing.

In addition, Continental and its partners are able to provide firstfit and replacement solutions through various methods, with hose assembly kits, hydraulic workshop equipment and portable crimp solutions.

ContiTech, under the Continental umbrella, is a world leader in industrial rubber and plastic products, with expertise in hydraulic hose manufacturing and fluid conveyance.

ContiTech’s head of sales and distribution for Australia and New Zealand, Lee Cranswick, says a recent restructure of the company’s “world class” portfolio has better positioned the company to meet client needs.

“Within the ContiTech business, we’ve had one of our largest restructures that I’ve been a part of within Continental,” Cranswick explains.

“We’ve actually split sectioned our business into distribution and then CES, which is customer engineered solutions.”

The distribution business focuses on supporting ContiTech’s distributors.

The CES business is focused on end users and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

He says the changes have had a hugely positive impact for both

Continental prides itself on providing a large portfolio for clients

ContiTech’s customers and staff, helping make ContiTech operations more customer-centric, and allowing the company to showcase more of its wide range of products to customers.

“The way we’ve restructured our business it is now putting us in front of our customers with more products and more opportunities.

“It’s been an exciting 10 months - that’s definitely the case for our business,” Cranswick adds.

Cranswick was recently promoted to ContiTech’s head of distribution for Australia and New Zealand.

“Part of that responsibility is the distribution of conveyor belts and it’s a really different business in terms of what I’ve been used to in the past.

“It’s been fantastic, again, it’s talking to existing clients that I may not have had the chance to talk with in the past, and then talking to them on the other opportunities and products that they could actually source from us,” he says.

“When you’re on site working with a conveyor belt, there’s definitely opportunities to see other products

that we do, like power transmission, industrial and hydraulic hoses too.

“So again, you get back to customercentric actions and processes that we use a lot in our business… We’re not just selling conveyor or hydraulics to people, we’re selling the Continental branded solution.

“It’s been a new way we’re doing business, it’s also been exciting talking to clients about the complete package.

The ability to provide clients with such a wide range of options and services makes ContiTech and Continental stand out from the crowd.

“It’s a wide range - we do everything from distribution to condition monitoring and services,” Cranswick explains.

“We have guys that literally go out to site and provide a service in terms of splicing a conveyor belt on a mine site to reduce the downtime of a mine site.

“We all know if you get down time on a mine site, it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars an hour. So we offer that service where guys are on site,” he says.

Continental and ContiTech have access to a wide range of products that can help provide a customer with what they need for work on site.

“We also supply power transmission through distribution, as well as industrial hose and fittings, hydraulic hose and fittings, air springs, sheet, rubber - both cured and non-cured - steel cord conveyor belt, textile conveyor belt and all the consumables that go with conveyors.

“Our existing clients, who may have only been looking at industrial hoses or hydraulic hose and fittings – they may have an opportunity through a relationship to sell other products within our portfolio” he adds.

“We’re opening up the opportunities for existing and potential clients.”

Cranswick also highlights how the restructuring of the business has led to a learning curve for current staff members, and resulted in a more knowledgeable sales team.

“Previously, we may have just sold hoses and fittings or air springs,” he explains.

“Now due to the exposure of the broad range of products that we do,

our sales guys have had to adapt and learn how to sell a product like a conveyor belt. The training provided by subject matter experts within our business has been very beneficial.”

“It’s been a real educational process the last 10 months and the team are doing a fantastic job, providing knowledge and know how, and as always making sure that our customers are at forefront of our mind.”

With the restructure in the rearview mirror and already starting to pay dividends, Cranswick says ContiTech is looking to the future.

“We want to be the first choice in material driven solutions for our customers – that’s the key takeaway.

“It’s been a big change, but we’re still doing quality products, we’re still looking after our customers with quality service.

“So, while we’ve had a big change internally, we’re still doing the basics right with our clients and trying to grow their business with our products,” he says.

Giving back

Thanks to Komatsu’s ‘Live your Dream’ program, employee Diana Easter is giving back to a charity that she holds close to her heart

Komatsu’s Live your Dream (LYD) program offers employees like Diana Easter the opportunity to make a significant impact on an organisation of their choice.

For Easter, this initiative was a way for her to give back to a charity that means a lot to not only herself, but her family.

The Live your Dream program is a Komatsu initiative that grants $10,000 to select employees each year to put towards a charity or organisation – whether that be a local

community charity, a fundraising opportunity or a community support service.

Easter, who works in Komatsu’s Mackay branch, received her LYD grant for the Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHC) – North Australia.

The RMHC provides a homeaway-from-home for seriously ill or injured children, and offers free accommodation, meals, tutoring programs and support to them and their families.

More than 2,200 families based in the Mackay region were supported by the RMHC in 2023, Komatsu says.

“When the local house opened, I started volunteering in the family room and saw so many different families using the services,” Easter says.

“I got to experience firsthand the positive impact that the house provides to these families and the difference a meal, safe space, bed and a friendly conversation can have.”

Her nephew Nate has also been a resident of the RMHC in both Perth and Melbourne, and this had a lasting impact on her.

“RMHC offered comfort, housing and food at a very traumatic time for my family, not to mention easing the financial burden involved during their visits,” she says.

“My nephew and sister-in-law are based in Kalgoorlie, which is nearly 600km from Perth, so to have that support there for them when they were so far away from home and their family networks was beyond helpful.”

Easter’s LYD grant will be used to provide local Mackay families at RMHC with essentials such as toiletries, snacks, sanitary items, water and activity packs for both the children and adults who visit the house.

The first batch of supplies have already been packed and delivered to the house by Easter’s family and fellow Komatsu workers.

“The RMHC were appreciative of the donation as they are an independent charity that relies on the work of volunteers and the financial support of individuals and corporate donations,” Easter says.

“Being able to give back and be a part of the Live your Dream program has been such a fantastic experience and I’m so grateful to have been selected.

“It’s a beautiful feeling to be able to give back to an organisation that has helped my family immensely.”

Olympic excavation

Level crossing removals as part of the Frankston Line Project have already resulted in the excavation of enough soil to fill more than 65 Olympic swimming pools

Melbourne’s Frankston Line is set to be level crossing free by 2029, transforming the way locals live, work, and travel.

With all its level crossings gone for good from the Frankston Line and 17 new stations built by the end of the decade, the upgrades will clear the way for more frequent services, improving safety and easing congestion.

Communities along the Frankston Line are already benefiting from level crossing removals which have created safer and less congested roads, and improved public transport facilities.

Many of the level crossing removals on the Frankston Line have used rail under road as the design solution. This involves excavating trenches, lowering the rail line and building road bridges.

Excavating

The first three level crossing removals on the Frankston Line were at North Road, Ormond; McKinnon Road, McKinnon; and Centre Road, Bentleigh in 2016.

The trench was dug in around five weeks, with more than 1,000 people working around the clock to excavate 250,000 cubic metres of soil – enough to fill the first two tiers of the MCG – in order to lower the line so trains could run safely under the roads.

These level crossings were some of Melbourne’s most contentious, with boom gates down for up to 45 minutes in the two-hour morning

peak, causing frustration, distress and delays for tens of thousands of motorists.

This means the wait for the works has been worth it, with new fully accessible stations, equipped with lifts, ramps and stairs to platforms below ground level in the new rail trench, built at Ormond, Bentleigh, and McKinnon as part of the project.

Trenches

The Level Crossing Removal Project has also excavated trenches at other locations to remove level crossings on the Frankston Line, including most recently at Neerim Road and Glen Huntly Road, Glen Huntly.

The fast-tracked project started in 2022 with crews putting more than 3,000 piles in place to make up the walls of the 1.2 km rail trench.

In Glen Huntly, the Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piling was mainly used as it generates less vibration and noise than other methods. The piles ranged in depth from 9 to 18m and in diameter from 0.7 to 1.2m.

Excavation of the rail trench started in mid-2023 with about 65 Olympic swimming pools worth of soil excavated. The deepest point of the trench is around nine metres deep.

Works were completed quickly by digging the trench in four separate sections, with four diggers and four excavators working at the same time, around the clock. Excavation took less than two months, with hundreds of truck movements taking the soil away from site.

The new Glen Huntly Station

opened to passengers in July 2023, featuring a design that pays homage to the old brick station and reflects the local architecture of the suburb.

It also includes improved station facilities and safer pedestrian connections.

Elevated solutions

Elevated rail solutions, where rail bridges are built over roads have also been used across the Frankston line, including the recent removals at Warrigal Road, Mentone and Parkers Road, Parkdale.

The Level Crossing Removal Project is also delivering network improvement projects on the Frankston Line.

This includes the final stage of works on the Kananook Train Stabling Yard, which are now being delivered and will almost triple the number of trains that are able to be stored at the facility.

The project will increase the capacity of the yard from 8 to 21 trains, build maintenance and train wash facilities and allow more trains to run on the Frankston Line more often.

Recent works at the site include excavating more than 230 metres of trenches for the foundations of the new rail lines, installing more than 15 tonnes of structural steel for the maintenance facility, and installing track and signalling infrastructure, drainage, electrical, and earthworks.

Upcoming works

There are seven level crossings still to be removed on the Frankston Line including:

• Wickham Road, Highett

• H ighett Road, Highett

• McDonald Street, Mordialloc

• Station Street, Aspendale

• Groves Street, Aspendale

• A rmstrongs Road, Seaford

• Station Street, Seaford

As part of these level crossing removals, new stations will be built at Highett, Mordialloc, Aspendale and Seaford.

Safety first

Kate Pollock has been recognised as the CCF QLD Work Health & Safety Champion of the Year, for her efforts in going above and beyond to improve health and safety at Haslin Constructions

Haslin Constructions’ Queensland safety manager Kate Pollock wasn’t always planning for a career in construction, but she’s now thriving in the industry.

Originally aspiring to be a lawyer and later a psychologist, Pollock quickly came to realise that she wasn’t as passionate about these roles as she initially thought.

Although she wasn’t aiming for a career in construction, Pollock always had close exposure to the industry through her father and brother, who both own their own companies and are project managers.

Through several different roles and this exposure to the industry, Pollock became increasingly interested about critical safety in the workplace.

“I often found myself picking up those safety related tasks in my roles,” she says.

“Having an opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives by ensuring they’re safe at work is what motivated me to specialise in workplace health and safety.”

Growing up in a coal-mining town, Pollock says she has seen the impacts that workplace incidents have on friends and families, which inspired her to find a way to help prevent such incidents.

Haslin Constructions

Pollock started working for the family-owned Haslin Constructions in 2022, when the New South Walesbased business branched into Queensland for the first time.

Living in Rockhampton, she started off as a health, safety, environment and quality (HSEQ) coordinator and managed safety on Haslin’s $62million upgrade of the Rockhampton sewage treatment plant – the business’ first project in the state.

It wasn’t long before her peers recognised the work that she was doing, and she was promoted to the Queensland safety manager for projects involving civil, commercial and industrial construction.

Now working across four projects and leading a team of site-based safety personnel, Pollock’s work ensures that all Haslin projects based in Queensland adhere to safety management systems and the state’s legislation and regulations.

This involves overseeing the implementation of Haslin’s safety management system at a site level, as well as assisting on-site teams in conducting risk assessments, spot checks, compliance with relevant legislation and assisting safety coordinators.

Through this role she was also

recognised externally and awarded as the Civil Contractors Federation Queensland (CCF QLD) Work Health & Safety Champion of the Year, for her efforts in going above and beyond to improve health and safety at Haslin.

Award-winner

Pollock was presented her award at CCF QLD’s Excellence in Civil Construction Awards at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre in early August.

Nominated by her direct line manager, she says it was incredibly humbling to know that her work is valued by her colleagues.

“It was an honour and a really proud moment, not just for me, but for the entire team at Haslin and the recognition really validated the hard work and dedication that I put in to maintaining high safety standards,” she says.

“The award highlights the trust and confidence that my team has in my abilities, and it’s a great feeling to know that my efforts are making a positive impact – reinforcing my commitment to continuing to go above and beyond to ensure that we are creating a safe work environment for everyone.”

Through this recognition and acknowledgement, Pollock says it has given her even greater motivation to strive for excellence and to further improve safety at Haslin Constructions.

Above and beyond

To be eligible for this award a person had to excel beyond expectations in their role and an excellent example of Pollock doing this is when Haslin Constructions commenced projects in Queensland.

Although she was new to the business, she undertook a review of Haslin’s existing safety system to ensure it complied with Queensland’s work, health and safety regulations.

A gap analysis was conducted to identify any differences and address them if needed, enabling staff to

"A

crusher"

Albury Quarries specialises in Crushing and cleanup operations for councils often around Tamworth and Northwest New South Wales. As a new business, its initial challenge was to find a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective Crushing solution.

The Keestrack R6H from Screenmasters Australia (SMA), known for its enhanced horsepower from its predecessor the R6, offers increased production capabilities and enables the quarry to efficiently produce 20mm or 40mm road base materials. Combined with exceptional support from SMA, Albury Quarries has seen remarkable business growth. Initially renting the R6 for 12 months, the reliability and performance of the machine led them to purchase a brand new unit.

You too can count on SMA

be trained on Queensland-specific requirements.

Pollock also makes sure that current safety procedures are regularly reviewed and updated to align with industry standards and regulations.

Another key example of the safety manager going above and beyond expectations is Pollock’s work in setting up training modules for Haslin’s construction management software – ProCore.

She says that the software helps streamline all project documentation, communication and safety reporting, for which she developed training modules for each of the ProCore tools used on-site.

“ProCore makes it easy for us to look at safety issues and then track the progress of closing them out,” Pollock says.

“I broke it all down and designed it to make sure that the modules were easy for everyone to understand and complete.”

Supporting on-site teams to promote and maintain safe work environments is essential to her role and it’s why she ensures that everyone completes comprehensive risk assessments before any work begins.

By providing continuous training to her colleagues through ‘toolbox talks’, Pollock ensures that her workforce is provided with more education around the hazards that they could face.

“Sometimes people that have been in the industry for quite some time can become desensitised to those

hazards that they’re facing on a daily basis,” she says.

“I like to reiterate them and encourage open and honest communication around safety, because I find that leads to more reporting of hazards and near misses, ensuring that we can address them promptly.”

To encourage this open and honest communication, she says that it’s of the upmost importance that she understands her workforce and builds trustful and meaning relationships.

Despite her role actively focusing on hazards and dangers, which may be a deterrence for some women wanting to work in construction, Pollock says the industry has been highly rewarding for her.

“The construction industry offers you the chance to see tangible results from your work,” she says.

“Every project contributes to the development of communities and infrastructure that people rely

Pollock ensures that all Haslin projects based in Queensland adhere to safety management systems and the state’s legislation and regulations

on daily, so there’s a strong sense of accomplishment that comes with being a part of something so impactful.”

Rewarding career

Already thriving in the industry, Pollock has been encouraged with the increasing number of women who are entering careers in construction.

She attributes the notable shift to the increased awareness of the opportunities available to women in the construction industry.

When she was growing up, Pollock says women weren’t presented with opportunities to undertake work experience in the construction industry, however these days she’s seen more girls provided with that chance.

“We’re starting to see more of an effort to create inclusive workplaces and I think that companies are now starting to recognise the value of diverse perspectives,” she says.

“There are now more programs and initiatives aimed at supporting women in the field, and I’ve seen the industry gradually breaking down the traditional gender barriers, with women proving that they bring valuable skills and insights to the table.”

Pollock was awarded the 2024 Civil Contractors Federation Queensland (CCF QLD) Work Health & Safety Champion of the Year.

New voice

On October 26 Queenslanders will go to the polls to elect a new state government for the next four years.

This is the first post-COVID-19 election in Queensland and arguably one of the most important elections for many years.

The issues that confront Queensland are very similar to every other state and territory in Australia – crime, the cost of living, health and housing.

I believe that the electorate is also looking for more mature conversations around foundation issues such as managing debt, energy, transport, integrity in government and industry sustainability.

Queensland’s debt is steadily increasing and is projected to continue to do so over the coming years.

It would be an irresponsible government that knee-jerks to austerity when the amount of investment required in infrastructure to improve the productivity of the state, and address the social requirements of that state, is growing at an alarming rate.

Hopefully there is a better approach to debt with a newly elected government.

Borrowing must be spent wisely on initiatives which enable rapid coordinated growth of the economy.

A key focus must be on productivity, enabling the economy and Queensland businesses to operate as efficiently as possible.

A newly elected government must work on initiatives which provide for this growth.

Funding must be provided for regional transport to provide reliable, fast and safe connectivity between economic centres.

A programmatic approach controlled by the Department of Transport and Main Roads that provides long-term delivery through smaller packages of work is needed.

An industrial relations system is required – which embeds productivity at every possibility without sacrificing wages and safety.

While the federal government is responsible for changes to industrial relations laws, the state government can assist by eliminating industrial relations contractual requirements in contracts. Policies such as BPIC and Energy Queensland’s requirement for contractors to meet their EBA requirements must go.

Queensland needs an energy plan that will deliver reliable, affordable and available electricity 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The current plan lacks detail on these issues. It is difficult to see when the energy transformation will be at a stage where reliable full-time power will be available, and the costs are clear.

Procurement practices are needed that remove risk as best as possible, distribute projects evenly by region and project size and fairly reward suppliers based on their ability to deliver projects as efficiently as can be achieved.

While the total budget for Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP) has increased, there are more than 200 fewer projects than last year.

CCF QLD CEO Damian Long says this is one of the most important elections for Queenslanders in many years. Image: Alex Zubko/stock.adobe.com

More than 77 per cent of the program is being directed to projects over $100 million, with these projects being based in southeast Queensland.

Most of the projects under $100 million are in the $0 to $10 million range.

Overall, most districts are seeing fewer projects than the year prior, based on QTRIP data available since 2020.

This is devastating to the regional communities, the civil contracting companies and the supply chain participants that work in the area, and this must urgently change.

There must be a real focus on reducing red and green tape. The administrative burden on companies is increasing each year, adding unnecessary costs to projects whilst adding to the difficulties of managing successful companies.

The management of social issues needs to be investigated so meaningful social outcomes are delivered through mechanisms which are a product of economic prosperity and policy, rather than through contractual requirements that are not flexible and arguably do not provide legacy outcomes.

Finally, there needs to be a change in the narrative on the delivery of infrastructure for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Legacy infrastructure was a catalyst for making the bid and the Olympic and Paralympic Games were claimed to accelerate the delivery of such.

There should not be an argument whether which venue is better for the Olympic and Paralympic Games over another.

The focus should be on what sporting and other infrastructure we need to support Queenslanders beyond 2032.

I would like to see a first-class stadium which could stage an AFL Grand Final, have the first cricket test permanently locked in, and stage large concerts while providing firstclass comfort for spectators and teams.

CCF QLD CEO Damian Long outlines the importance of the upcoming Queensland state election and what it could mean for the state’s infrastructure

Leadership solutions

NAWIC hopes its programs will inspire businesses of all sizes to take action and create further opportunities for women in leadership

In July, The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) conducted research into the top 20 construction companies and developers in Australia, and it showed that, on average, fewer than 20 per cent of leaders in these companies are women.

To address this, NAWIC is developing a solutions framework to share with both our corporate and small business members, aiming to highlight collaborative strategies for improving outcomes and creating further opportunities for women to advance into these roles and thrive.

In our most recent column with Earthmovers & Excavators, we hinted at upcoming spotlights and features from the top 20 that have implemented initiatives to promote women into leadership roles.

We are excited to showcase these programs, hoping they will inspire businesses of all sizes to take action and implement their own programs.

Some of the key initiatives include:

• Sponsorship Programs designed for women that pair senior leader

sponsors with mid-senior career women.

• Leadership Programs where participants complete modules on topics including risk management, communication, culture and more.

• Mentoring Programs designed to empower early-career female professionals through mentorship.

• Partnerships with Business Schools to deliver leadership and business programs through organisations.

• Graduate Programs fostering job readiness and career pathways for future leaders.

Market growth

The Asia Pacific compact wheel loader market is expected to hold $210m (USD $142m) in revenue by 2030

The global markets for wheel loaders and compact wheel loaders are expected to see significant growth in the coming years, according to new reports.

The global compact wheel loader market is anticipated to reach $9.7 billion (US$6.5bn) by 2030, up from $7.78bn (US$5.25bn) in 2023, according to a new report.

The ‘Compact Wheel Loaders Market: Global Industry Analysis and Forecast (2024-2030)’ report from Maximise Market Research highlights a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.1 per cent over the next six years.

The Asia Pacific compact wheel loader market, which includes Australia, is expected to hold $210m (USD $142m) in revenue by 2030.

The report highlights Hitachi and Komatsu as some of the many big firms in the Asia Pacific region, and says the high demand for compact wheel loaders in the region may be attributed to the construction industry’s resurgence, as well as government initiatives to improve infrastructure.

“Asian Pacific countries have focused on upgrading infrastructure, which has led to massive construction expenditure, which has resulted in increasing building investment,” the report says.

Construction growth

The report also states that the compact wheel loader market is driven by the growing construction

industry, as these loaders are frequently used by construction companies for loading of building materials.

In addition, it says compact wheel loader sales are expected to increase throughout the forecast period due to factors like high productivity and efficiency, good material handling capacity, high fuel efficiency, fast speed and low heat growth in the excavating range.

Technological advancements

The forecast report also highlights the adoption of intelligent assistant systems in compact wheel loaders by construction equipment manufacturers.

“Manufacturers are focusing their efforts on creating new items to ensure enhanced operational production and efficiency,” the report says, highlighting wheel loaders introduced in recent times by Liebherr and CNH.

The Hammer Hire offering now includes excavators ranging from 1.7 tonnes right up to 70t, site dump trucks and skid steer loaders

When Australian Hammer Supplies Hire – or Hammer Hire, as which it’s often referred – wanted to expand into the machinery hire market, the company turned to Kobelco and STM Trucks and Machinery.

Hammer Hire is one of Sydney’s leading suppliers of excavator attachment hire solutions.

Based in Ingleburn, NSW, the company stocks a wide range of excavating and earthmoving equipment, as well as the largest fleet of earthmoving attachment dry hire solutions across the eastern seaboard (in all of NSW, Victoria and Queensland).

Hammer Hire’s extensive range of attachments includes hydraulic hammers, diamond blade rock saws, auger drills, bucket crushers, hydraulic compaction plates, bulk pulverisers, hydraulic rock-grabs, twin head rock grinders, combicutters, bucket screeners and much more, all available for long and short term hire.

The company has been an attachment hire specialist since its inception 12 years ago – and it is now moving into hiring out the complete machines as well.

“With a vision to better support our customers, it was only natural to transition into owning equipment

such as excavators as the next level of offering,” explains Hammer Hire sales manager Blake Wilson.

The Hammer Hire offering now includes excavators ranging from 1.7 tonnes right up to 70t, site dump trucks and skid steer loaders.

In total, the fleet consists of more than 130 machines, comprising the excavators, posi-tracks/skid steer loaders, rollers and site dumpers, as well as other items including over 400 attachments suited to the above machines.

Wilson explains that when choosing equipment for the business, it was important to look not just at the capabilities, but other factors.

“We want a low total cost of ownership coupled with overall reliability, a cornerstone of our machine requirements,” he says.

“For us, Kobelco ticked the boxes.”

“The result of Kobelco’s advanced technologies beautifully balances all the demands of today’s construction industry.

“Backed by greater digging capacity and improved fuel efficiency, these hydraulic excavator machines offer a more economical and environmentally friendly earthmoving equipment solution,” he adds.

“With machine sizes available

from 13t to 35t, with both zero and conventional tail swings available, we are guaranteed to get the right machine to meet various requirements.”

Hammer Hire had already been using Kobelcos for the past five years, so when the time came to expand the excavator range, it looked towards the brand again.

“We wanted to add more Kobelcos to the 34 we already had,” Wilson explains.

And for these purchases, there was only one dealer at front of mind.

“We get our Kobelcos from STM Trucks and Machinery at Smeaton Grange,” he adds.

“This is mainly due to their wide stock availability, family business values and an ability to drop anything to make things happen.”

The latest Hammer Hire STM acquisitions comprise a SK135SR medium excavator, a SK135SR with offset boom and a SK380 XDLC with conventional counterweight.

“We have always been to STM for the Kobelcos, and the service we get from the STM team is second to none,” Wilson says.

“Regardless of the issue, there is always a solution.

“We have great trust with STM’s aftersales. All of our Kobelco machines are under service contracts, ensuring the professionalism of dealer maintenance.

“The STM service and parts team are a great helping hand to our operation.

“Downtime is the worst thing that can happen to a hire company operationally,” he adds.

“It costs our clients time and money as well as ours.

“Equipment maintenance is the highest priority to us and STM understands this.”

Wilson says Hammer Hire was committed to ensuring the new fleet of excavators and plant and equipment will be available for hire.

“That means Kobelcos will continue to feature in future purchases for Hammer Hire,” he concludes.

Anzac Station will be Melbourne’s first direct tram/ train interchange, providing a seamless connection between tram and train services

Since works began in 2016, Melbourne’s iconic boulevard of St Kilda Road has seen many changes; the latest being the completion of major construction on Anzac Station.

The station – the third of five new state-of-the-art stations to be developed as part of the Metro Tunnel Project – will provide a quick and easy rail connection to Melbourne’s Domain area, including the Shrine of Remembrance, Royal Botanic Gardens, the Alfred Hospital and Albert Park.

Located below St Kilda Road, Anzac Station has four entrances with stairs, lifts and escalators that link to a new pedestrian underpass beneath busy St Kilda Road.

Anzac Station has been designed as a “pavilion in the park” with its signature 85m long, 21m wide timber canopy skylights filling the station with natural light, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.

The station’s tram stop, which opened in 2022, has extra-long platforms that can fit four trams at a time for large crowds attending events such as Anzac Day and the Melbourne Grand Prix.

The stop will be Melbourne’s first direct tram/train interchange, providing a seamless connection between tram and train services, while the station takes pressure off the world’s busiest tram corridor.

The Metro Tunnel will connect the busy Sunbury and Cranbourne/Pakenham lines via a new tunnel under the city, creating an end-to-end rail line from the north-west to the south-east, freeing up space in the City Loop and giving passengers new connections and more choices.

EDUCATION

Next generation

The program will see Komatsu partner with educational organisations to help develop curriculums and hands-on learning experiences

Komatsu Australia has launched a program which will help develop young talent and showcase the diverse range of opportunities available in the mining and construction sectors around the country.

The program targets school and university students and recent school leavers and will see STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) promoted directly through schools.

It will also include technical workshops and seminars tailored to students and educators, as well as work experience and placements throughout Komatsu.

It will also see Komatsu partner with educational organisations to help develop curriculums and hands-on learning experiences to raise awareness of the roles and opportunities available.

Zara Carey, Komatsu Australia’s general manager for people experience, says the program will help prepare the next generation of industry leaders with the skills they need for a future in heavy equipment or mining.

“Often people think the only jobs available in heavy industries are for

mechanics or service technicians, but as our sector embraces more technology and innovative solutions, our workforce is shifting too,” she says.

“We’re seeing a stronger focus on STEM opportunities, and we want to demonstrate this variety of career options available to the youth of today.

“Komatsu is a unique workplace as we offer multiple pathways for employment.

“You might start in a hands-on role, but often can shift sideways or upwards to a more managerial or technical role, such as analytics engineering, data science or software development.

“This is what we want our youth program to promote, that there are different opportunities out there that school leavers might not know of, and Komatsu could just be the place for you.”

Hydrogen power

The results of this site-based testing will significantly shape and enhance Liebherr and Fortescue’s future development strategies for zero emission haulage, the company says

Fortescue’s hydrogen-powered haul truck prototype, dubbed “Europa”, recently made the 1,100-kilometre journey from Perth to the Pilbara where it will now complete sitebased testing.

Over the coming months, the Liebherr T 264 haul truck will be tested in a real-life mining environment at Christmas Creek.

This will help inform the company’s future fleet of zero emission haul trucks.

Once commissioned on site, Europa will be refuelled with liquid hydrogen from a gaseous and liquid hydrogen plant, located at Fortescue’s Green Energy Hub at Christmas Creek.

“It’s fantastic to have our hydrogenpowered haul truck prototype now joining its battery electric equivalent, Roadrunner, up at site,” says Fortescue metals chief executive officer, Dino Otranto.

“Europa integrates for the first time a Fortescue Zero battery into a Liebherr haul truck, marking a huge milestone in our partnership with Liebherr.

“Over the next five years we’ll be working with Liebherr to develop a fleet of zero emission haul trucks, which will be progressively deployed across our sites from 2026.

“This builds on our wider collaboration with Liebherr, where we are working together to develop and validate a fully integrated autonomous haulage solution, which we’re aiming to be the first to operate in zero emission vehicles globally.

“To decarbonise mining, you need a system solution – so this new operating system, which integrates a fleet management system and energy management, will be a game changer for us in reducing our carbon emissions.”

Electric mixing

The 100 per cent electric-powered mixer truck will be tested under the unique operating constraints of ready-mix concrete distribution in metro and urban environments

The first road registered and approved 100 per cent electric concrete mixer truck in Australia is currently being trialled.

The details of the Sany eMixer were unveiled recently by Holcim Australia , a leader in sustainable building solutions, and Putzmeister Oceania, a provider of quality concrete machinery and equipment.

The eMixer has been launched under the Sany brand, supported by Putzmeister, and has been approved under Australian Design Rules (ADRs).

Holcim says the innovative eMixer represents a significant leap forward in the construction industry’s journey towards a carbon-neutral construction site.

To meet local requirements, Putzmeister Oceania partnered with Cesco Australia to manufacture an Australian-made mixer structure on a Sany SY408P electric chassis, integrated with locally designed and accepted controls.

The outcome is 100 per cent electric, globally developed, locally manufactured, battery-powered truck that is road-registered nd equipped with an 8x4 mixer.

The Sany eMixer is a specialised vehicle designed to transport concrete from the batching plant to the construction site safely, reliably and efficiently, Holcim says.

By operating entirely electrically, it enables transportation and concrete

delivery to be carried out entirely without emissions.

At the eMixer’s core is a powerful 350 kWh battery from CATL, a global battery manufacturer known for its partnership with industry leaders like Tesla, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The machine can be fully charged overnight with a 30-kW charger or rapidly charged in just three hours.

Holcim says the vehicle’s advanced design reduces noise levels and enhances mileage and efficiency.

“The eMixer typically has lower operating costs than its diesel counterparts,” says Sany concrete and roads machinery sales manager William Liang.

“It is more energy-efficient and requires less maintenance, which could result in significant cost savings over the vehicle’s lifetime”.

“The performance of the truck and the efficiency of the battery will be tested under the unique operating constraints of ready-mix concrete distribution in metro and urban environments,” says Kevin Peet, regional logistics manager, Concrete Vic/SA, Holcim.

Holcim is the first company to trial the Sany eMixer in Australia.

Silica safety hub

Developed by a team of expert occupational hygienists, these resources address the most commonly asked questions from employers and workers looking for guidance

The Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) has launched a new resource hub to support businesses in complying with the new silica regulations which came into effect on September 1.

The new Silica Hub provides a location for businesses seeking guidance on the new regulatory changes.

Developed by a team of expert occupational hygienists, these resources address the most commonly asked questions from employers and workers looking for guidance.

AIOH past president Tracey Bence emphasises the importance of these new resources.

“Silica may be common in materials at workplaces but knowing how to control silica dust is not always common knowledge,” she says.

“Our aim is to empower businesses with that knowledge and practical solutions to effectively manage silica dust exposure.

“The new regulations require a detailed understanding and a proactive approach, which our plain language resources fully support.”

The Silica Hub features materials designed to enhance understanding and compliance.

Crystalline silica is generated when materials such as concrete are mechanically processed. Image: stock. adobe / evgeny

Topics include: how to check for crystalline silica, what high-risk crystalline silica processes are highrisk, how to go about air monitoring, what makes dust controls effective, which masks to use for silica protection and other insights into real-world exposure scenarios and solutions.

Kate Cole OAM, another past president of AIOH, added that it was vital for businesses to have access to credible resources, considering the seriousness of silica related disease.

“The AIOH silica hub not just educates but also equips businesses to make informed decisions about how to protect their workers from dust diseases,” she said.

The AIOH urges all businesses where crystalline silica exists to access these resources to support compliance and to safeguard worker health as the new regulations come into effect.

Access to the silica hub resources is now available on the AIOH website at www.aioh.org.au/silica-hub.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Vital connection

The new bridge has provided a vital connection for the community and serves as a testament to the power of engineering to deliver positive outcomes

The New Fitzroy Bridge Project has been named Project of the Year at Western Australia’s 2024 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards – People and Projects.

Completed in just 11 months, the bridge replaces the old Fitzroy River Bridge, which was irreparably damaged by flooding that took place in January last year.

This rate of progress was made possible due to a high level of collaboration with key suppliers and contractors to ensure components such as bridge beams, bearings and concrete were made available at the time they were required and installed in an efficient, but safe manner.

The State Government also undertook a fast-tracked procurement process, which saw contracts awarded in around eight weeks, a process which normally takes up to nine months.

The new bridge is six times stronger than the old bridge, with twice the number of steel and concrete piles, driven twice as deep into the riverbed. It is also significantly longer than the old bridge and has a lane in each direction.

The New Fitzroy River Bridge Project was completed by the Fitzroy Bridge Alliance, comprising BMD Constructions, Georgiou, BG&E and Main Roads Western Australia.

“By honouring these remarkable achievements, the Engineers Australia Excellence Awards spotlight the pivotal role of engineers in improving our daily lives,” says Engineers Australia General Manager – WA, Susan Kreemer Pickford.

“This recognition elevates their achievements, providing a platform to inspire the next generation of Australian innovators.”

Local winners will go on to represent their division at the national awards’ gala dinner on 21 November at the Brisbane City Hall.

Electric expansion

The inauguration is the start of Volvo’s Arvika operation’s journey into electric wheel loader production

Volvo CE unveiled new facilities to support the production of electric wheel loaders for the global market at its plant in Arvika, Sweden

Australia’s first automated cone truck has successfully completed a trial on a major Melbourne road-upgrade project

An automated cone truck (ACT), developed by Brisbane’s Arrowes Roading Safety, has completed a 12month implementation program on Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway Upgrades.

Tested on the road project that connects the Eastern Freeway to the North East Link tunnels, the ACT aims to provide a solution for the number of fatalities and injuries faced by traffic controllers on the nation’s roads.

Arrowes executive director Lea Ea says the ACT’s design allows for safe and efficient deployment of cones, with the capacity to deploy one every seven seconds.

It can also place cones at intervals of 12 to 24 metres while travelling at speeds of up to 16 km/h, she adds.

“Road construction and maintenance workers are among the most likely to be involved in a workplace incident in Australia,” she says.

“Research by Safe Work Australia found 63 per cent of fatalities on worksites were caused by being hit by moving vehicles,. Every life lost is one life too many.”

Approximately 100 traffic controllers are injured each year, requiring medical treatment or time off work, and at least one traffic controller is killed annually, according to Arrowes.

Technology leap

Cat’s dynamic energy transfer (DET) can transfer energy to both diesel-electric and battery-electric powered large mining trucks while they are working around a mine site

Caterpillar has unveiled a solution to help solve one of the most complex aspects of the mining industry’s energy transition –energy management.

Cat’s dynamic energy transfer (DET) is a fully Caterpillar-developed system that can transfer energy to both diesel-electric and battery-electric large mining trucks while they are working around a mine site.

It can also charge a machine’s batteries while operating with increased speed on grade, improving operational efficiency and machine uptime.

“We believe Cat DET provides a technological leap for the mining industry,” says Denise Johnson, Caterpillar’s Resource Industries group president.

“Our team of innovators designed this system to provide immediate benefit to miners who want to lower their operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions today while also creating flexibility for the future.

“We know customers need choices to fit their unique site objectives. We are proud to deliver an innovative, integrated solution that can support their needs of today and those of the future.”

Cat DET consists of a series of integrated elements, including a power module that converts energy from a mine site’s power source, an electrified rail system to transmit the energy and a machine system to transfer the energy to the truck’s powertrain.

The rail system can be customised to customers’ specific site layouts, including high-speed and curved haul roads.

The connecting arm can be installed on either side of a truck and on multiple truck models.

Compact efficiency

New loader offers emission-free and quiet operation, making it ideal for work indoors or in areas sensitive to noise

Schäffer International has unveiled a new compact loader equipped with an electric motor drive. The loader is currently available overseas.

The company says its new 14e is based on its previous compact multifunctional loader the 1422, saying that the new model offers emission-free and quiet operation.

Schäffer says this quality opens up numerous areas of application, such as working indoors and in areas that are sensitive to noise. A wide range of attachments is also available.

Thanks to its low operating weight, the loader can be used on delicate floor surfaces and transported on a car trailer.

The new loader is very compact, with a width starting from 0.89 metres and a height of 1.99 metres.

This allows it to negotiate low and narrow passages with ease and puts it among the most compact loaders Schäffer has ever built.

With an operating weight of just 1,345 kg, the 14e and its attachments can be transported quickly and easily on a car trailer.

With an operating weight of just 1,345 kg, the 14e and its attachments can be transported quickly and easily on a car trailer. Image: Schäffer

The lifting height at the tool pivot is 2.23 metres and the hydraulic output is 28 l/min. The electric and conventional models also offer an identical lifting capacity of 810 kg.

The 14e is equipped with energy-efficient LED lights and LED working headlights. A 9.6 kW electric motor sends power to the hydrostatic drive with automotive control and the working hydraulics.

The motor is powered by a 48 V lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 12.2 kWh, enabling operating times of up to two and a half hours for medium-duty loading activities where no hydraulic attachments are used.

The battery can be charged either from commercially available wallboxes with a type 2 plug or from 230 V power outlets. Charging the battery to 80 per cent capacity takes around two and a half hours.

Ready to work

Australia’s welders are highly productive and ready to work, a new survey from Weld Australia shows.

Weld Australia’s 2024 Member Survey shows local welders are highly-productive, but the peak body says additional opportunities are needed for the skilled workforce.

Of those surveyed, two thirds of businesses rated the productivity of their welding staff as “good” or “excellent”.

That said, 25 per cent of survey respondents said they spend less than two hours of their shifts doing actual welding (with the arc switched on); and 58 per cent spend less than four hours of their shifts welding.

This is compared with five hours per welder per day in countries like the United States and Germany, both of which have similar Workplace Health and Safety Standards, Weld Australia says.

The factors most likely to impact the productivity of welding staff are time spent on tasks like materials handling (42 per cent) and joint preparation and fit up (21 per cent).

Weld Australia chief executive Geoff Crittenden says technology offers a clear pathway to improved productivity for local welders.

“When companies are focused on improving their processes, they naturally innovate—implementing the latest technologies in a bid to streamline operations,” he says.

“However, uptake of advanced welding technology remains relatively slow. This lack of tech adoption is impeding our ability to navigate the current challenges facing the industry.”

What was driving the slow adoption of new technologies was a lack of additional work, he adds.

“Business owners are caught in a difficult position, juggling rising costs and a lack of work with the imperative to innovate and remain competitive.

“The reality is that without a guaranteed supply of work, particularly from government-backed projects, many welding businesses will find it difficult—if not impossible— to justify the necessary investments in advanced technologies. We risk losing critical skills and capabilities that are essential for our nation’s economic future,” he says.

“Local content requirements will fortify our domestic supply chains, boost investor confidence, and cultivate a skilled workforce, positioning Australia as a global manufacturing leader.

“This will create a capacity mechanism that generates a clear, long-term signal for investment by private equity and local manufacturers,” he says.

Specifically, Weld Australia has called for the Federal and State and Territory governments to create a local content policy to develop Australia’s manufacturing capacity.

“Local content legislation must specify that 60 per cent of all fabricated steel used in our renewable energy projects is manufactured in Australia by local welders,” Crittenden says.

“This local content legislation

Improved adoption of advanced welding technologies will help to further boost productivity, Weld Australia says.

Image MexChriss/shutterstock.com must be drafted in conjunction with industry to eliminate the loopholes that so often arise in these types of policies. Australian governments must also mandate that all wind towers are constructed, erected and inspected according to Australian Standards.”

The call comes after the welding industry cited concerns about the rising cost of energy (64 per cent), materials (61 per cent) and labour (50 per cent) in the survey, though these figures are dwarfed when compared to the 75 per cent of respondents who cited a lack of work as their primary challenge.

With the survey finding that half of Australia’s welding workshops are operating at 80 per cent capacity or below, and 7 in 10 of its members indicating they have the capacity for additional work, Crittenden said Australian welding businesses are facing “unprecedented pressures”.

“Lack of work, combined with the rising costs of energy, materials and labour, is making it nearly impossible for companies to invest in the technology and skills necessary to stay globally competitive,” he says.

“We need a clear and enforceable commitment from the Federal and state governments to support local manufacturing.”
