Boral has announced the acquisition of Queensland’s Booyal Quarries

Boral has announced the completed acquisition of Booyal Quarries in Queensland, a 75-hectare hard rock quarry located 60km southwest of Bundaberg in the Wide Bay region.

The acquisition will provide security of supply to the company’s Wide Bay customers and integrated network, including asphalt and concrete plants at Hervey Bay, Bundaberg and Maryborough, it says, and Booyal staff will transfer over to Boral.

Boral executive general manager, concrete & quarries north, Paul Noakes says the acquisition will provide the company with a competitively strong quarry position to meet the infrastructure and development needs of the rapidly growing region.

“The strategic acquisition of Booyal Quarries in Queensland will underpin Boral’s ongoing commitment to servicing the highgrowth Wide Bay region,” he says.

“Booyal Quarries will play a crucial role in providing quarry materials to Boral’s local downstream asphalt and concrete operations to supply construction materials for the region’s robust infrastructure and development pipeline.

Major upgrade

Komatsu has introduced the 26-tonne WA475-10 wheel loader to Australian shores, with fuel savings of 30 per cent

Komatsu’s WA475-10 wheel loader has been introduced to the Australian market.

The company says the 26-tonne machine is 30 per cent more fuel efficient than the previous model and is perfect for hauling or loading jobs.

Komatsu Australia national business manager Nick Vrontas says significant upgrades on the WA47510 make it an appealing addition to quarry fleets.

“The WA475-10 features the newly developed Komatsu’s Hydraulic Mechanical Transmission (KHMT), an innovative solution that makes the loader more powerful and more fuel-efficient,” he says.

“Variable speed control allows operators to adjust the machine’s top speed to meet specific site requirements, and the adjustable variable traction control also limits wheel spin on unstable and slippery ground conditions often found on quarry sites.

“We’ve also completely innovated the power control on this latest model,” he says.

“It’s never been easier for an operator to find the right balance between traction and lifting power, with the hydraulic speed independently controlled from the accelerator pedal, and the

boom speed controlled by the hydraulic lever.”

A Z-bar linkage system provides more lift force and a higher tonnesper-hour production rate on the WA475-10, Komatsu says, and the response time of the hydraulics and the dumping or lifting can be set to specific quarry site requirements.

Komatsu says the loader can be tailored for specific applications, such as waste sites or quarry environments. Working with customers, Komatsu can provide

a solution that is tailored to the loader’s application, from enquiry to post delivery, maintaining service checks and requirements.

“The WA475-10 engine is Tier 4 compliant, and at even low engine speeds the engine puts out high power and delivers more engine torque and performance,” Vrontas says.

“We’re beyond excited to have the loader on our shores, and we’re looking forward to introducing it to many quarry sites across the country.”

The Victorian government has established a new program dedicated to helping injured workers recover and get back to work safely – Return To Work Victoria

The Return To Work Victoria program will help injured workers recover and return to worksites safely, the Victorian government says.

The program will focus on promoting effective occupational rehabilitation of injured workers, encourage employers to provide suitable job opportunities for workers who have been injured and identify innovative injury prevention and return to work strategies.

“Return to Work Victoria is a significant investment in improving outcomes for injured workers and supporting businesses to create safe and healthy workplaces,” program executive director Jason Lardelli says.

In its first three years, there is an initial program budget of $50 million with an annual review to evaluate pilot programs – ensuring they are delivering outcomes for workers.

As part of the program, workers will have access to a mental health support hotline for work-related stress and burnout.

Small and medium sized business will also have access to an initiative with tailored support to build mentally healthy workplaces, the Victorian government announced.

WorkSafe’s claims management, recovery and return to work functions will be centralised in Return To Work Victoria – enabling WorkSafe to better target support and interventions.

Bin to building

Australia’s first soft plastics and e-waste recycling facility has opened in Melbourne’s west, converting waste into new building materials

The Centre for Regenerative Design & Collaboration Global (CRDC Global) has opened its new $2.5 million recycling plant in Tottenham, Melbourne – turning hard-to-recycle plastics into low-carbon building materials.

CRDC Global’s facility will process soft and hard plastics found in e-waste into a product that can be used in concrete, masonry bricks, blocks, pavers and asphalt.

As part of CRDC’s Resin8 process, discarded plastic is shredded and batched according to its bulk density, then pre-conditioned into a waterless stage that eliminates odours.

CRDC says this mixture is then melted during a heated extrusion stage, which produces a new substance that is granulated into concrete mix designs.

“Thanks to the strong support from Australia New Zealand Recycling Platform and the Victorian government, we’re transforming local plastic waste into valuable, eco-friendly building materials right here in our community,”

CRDC Australia managing director Shane Ramsey says.

Resin8 has unique thermal insulation properties that boosts the longevity and energy efficiency of buildings it’s used in.

At full capacity the facility will process around 6,650 tonnes of hard and soft plastics each year –the equivalent of around 330 garbage trucks – and produce 8,300 tonnes of Resin8.

The Melbourne location marks the fourth city in the world to install a Resin8 facility, CRDC says.

Resin8 is currently being trialled by the Hobsons Bay Council, where 1,350kg of soft plastics will be turned into asphalt for a local road project.

The Victorian government says it is looking at more opportunities to use the recycled plastic in upcoming infrastructure projects.

“Once upon a time this would have required six or seven different companies to make that happen,” Kendrigan says.

Mid-sized mulcher

Colbrook Industries is now offering a new drum mulcher option for mid-sized skid steers and compact track loaders –the DC Pro from Diamond Mowers – opening up more possible uses for contractors

The latest addition to the Colbrook Industries line-up of mulching equipment is the Diamond Mowers Drum Mulcher DC Pro, designed for a previously unserved niche of the vegetation clearance market.

Launched by Diamond Mowers at last year’s ConExpo trade event in Las Vegas, Australian dealer Colbrook Industries is now offering the new drum mulcher Down Under – says Colbrook Industries business development manager Hayley Plageman.

“The Diamond Mowers Drum Mulcher DC Pro has been built specifically for mid-sized skid steers, so anything up to 75 horsepower [56kW],” she says.

“Up until now there’s not really been anything available for those smaller, mid-sized skid steers. Now, there is a drum mulcher available for contractors with smaller machines who can expand their reach into forestry, mulching or fire mitigation.”

The Drum Mulcher DC Pro is a lighter mulcher option at 612kg, with a 63cc two-speed bent axis piston motor. The high-torque hydraulic motor allows the DC Pro to spool up faster and deliver greater force to handle larger material.

The DC Pro has a 50-inch (127cm) cutting width to chop through trees, brush and mulch material up to 8 inches (20cm) in diameter. The depth control drum features a forward exposure that allows for optimum

tree engagement and maximum cut width relative to weight.

“We see this new drum mulcher as being an appealing option for landowners who need to undertake fire mitigation work, creating asset protection zones around their properties and clearing fence lines,” Plageman says.

“But also fencing contractors who have a skid steer that previously have not been able to use a drum mulcher due to the flow limits of their machine. Now, with the DC Pro, they have access to a drum mulcher that can be used to clear those fence lines which tend to contain denser vegetation with more timber in, as opposed to just using a slasher for grass.

“Civil contractors with smaller skid steers too now have a drum mulcher to open up their job prospects into areas previously requiring larger machinery.”

A rugged chassis guards the motor from ground impact and allows the operator to manipulate downed material and position vegetation for effective mulching, while a chain guard at the front contains the material being mulched.

As well as depth control rings to control the bite size, the Drum Mulcher DC Pro comes standard with Diamond’s exclusive Twin Chisel planer teeth that generate fine mulch quickly and efficiently.

The attachment also accommodates other teeth options for tackling different types of terrain, including Twin Maul carbide teeth that have been designed for use in rough, rocky terrain, and four-point hardened steel teeth for work in high production environments.

“The four-point are the most efficient tooth; they just don’t love working in the dirt,” Plageman says.

“So, for groundwork, we recommend the carbide, as you get a much longer tooth life. But you can mix and match them on the drum to suit particular jobs, so you could have the four-points in the middle for productivity and efficiency and the carbides on the outside for longevity, striking a good balance.”

With the Diamond Mowers Drum Mulcher DC Pro on show for the first time at Diesel Dirt & Turf in April, Plageman says it has already been generating interest.

“With all Diamond Mowers products, they’re always phenomenal – everyone loves them,” she says.

“They are certainly tough and they do the job. It’s a really good option for those mid-size skid steers that have had to miss out to this point.

“As the bigger drums are up around a tonne, smaller machines can’t carry them and the flow rate requirements were quite high, whereas now we’ve opened up the market for those mid-sized skid steers to be able to run a drum and allow contractors to expand their business opportunities.”

For Tasmania’s Mornington Park Waste Transfer Station, an Anaconda DF410 scalping screen from Onetrak is helping turn construction and demolition waste into reusable products

The Mornington Park Waste Transfer Station is a privately owned waste management facility located in the suburb of Mornington in the City of Clarence – part of greater Hobart in Tasmania. Mornington is predominantly a residential suburb, but it also houses the Mornington Industrial Estate. With a suburb population of 2,265, over 10,000 vehicles visit the Mornington Park Waste Transfer Station per month.

The transfer station is run under contract with the Clarence City Council, accepting kerbside waste, a range of waste from the public and commercial waste, including construction and demolition (C&D) material. The site also has a Hydrowater Treatment Facility, which has had a recent upgrade to allow for the receipt, storage, treatment and disposal of up to 30,000 tonnes of material per year. With a focus on ‘cleaning up’ the recycling process and practicing what it preaches, the Mornington Park Waste Transfer Station recycles much of its own product to enhance the waste disposal experience for customers and minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill.

The transfer station’s process for C&D waste begins with pre-sorting of the material. A material handler separates the larger timber, steel and plasterboard, stockpiling them for further processing. Meanwhile

the balance of this material, which includes fines and often moisture, is fed into an Anaconda DF410 scalping screen with a Hidromek HMK210 excavator, both sourced through exclusive Australian dealer Onetrak.

This material is separated into three products by the Anaconda DF410, which has a magnet on the head drum for further metal recovery, finally producing a fines product and rubble. Additionally, it has a camera system so the screen can be continuously monitored.

The initial purchase of the Anaconda DF410 scalping screen from Onetrak began as a replacement for a very old screen.

The original screen allowed the team to put together a business case for the processing of C&D waste. Once this avenue was approved, it was time for an upgrade.

Mornington Park Waste Transfer Station managing director Wesley Hazell turned to Onetrak for a suitable solution.

Hazell says the Anaconda DF10 is highly effective in handling the tasks required and is extremely well suited for this job, with the ability to manage the high levels of moisture in the product without causing issues and also working well in confined spaces.

He adds that the machine is well designed and constructed, with easy access for maintenance, as well as boasting a high fuel efficiency. The

operators also find it very easy to use and reliable.

When asked how many tonnes of material is managed by the plant per hour, Hazell says that the focus at Mornington Park Waste Transfer Station is on the diversion of material from landfill, saving on labour and machine handling, rather than on producing products for sale.

The fines that are produced are currently used for the refurbishment and rehabilitation of the site, providing areas with replanted native species and landscaping. The rubble is mainly used for haul roads and the facility has agreements with several concrete recyclers in the area to process the concrete.

Hazell praises Onetrak and Anaconda for what he says has been exceptional support and service, adding that he hasn’t encountered any problems and finds them extremely reliable to work with.

Holt says that cutting a single steel bar on an older bandsaw would take up to four minutes, whereas the P150 can cut a diameter up to 150mm within seconds, leading to a significant increase in productivity.

With over 30 years in the industry, Steve Heather doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty.

The Australian Bulk Handling Expo (BULK2024) will return after a successful event in 2022. Earthmovers & Excavators learns more about the show and how it plans to grow the industry

The bulk handling industry is a diverse sector – made up of businesses that transport and handle bulk solids.

At first glance it might seem that a major iron ore mine, a cement plant, or a grain shipping terminal don’t have much in common. However, they each use similar equipment like conveyors, silos, hoppers and more to move their materials from one point to another.

They are also grappling with a labour shortage. Skilled labour has become harder to find, and much harder to retain, with technicians and tradies some of Australia’s most sought-after workers, particularly in regional and remote areas.

A range of strategies are being implemented across the country to help address the issue, but there is no silver bullet. It has led many organisations to begin looking at innovations like autonomous machinery to help increase their efficiencies as much as possible.

The BULK2024 plans to bring this diverse industry together under the one roof in September. Located at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre, the event aims to help spread industrial knowledge, showcase the latest technologies and innovations and provide an opportunity to network with likeminded peers.

Lauren Chartres, BULK2024 show director, says the event is the only dedicated Australian expo for producers of bulk commodities such as grains, coal, iron ore, cement, animal feed and woodchips.

Paving the way

RMIT University has partnered with 10 Victorian councils, paving their roads with an asphalt mix that incorporates recyclable plastics

RMIT University has partnered with 10 Victorian councils to demonstrate how the issue of waste plastic can be tackled in an innovative way – by recycling it as a performance enhancer in new Victorian roads. Jackson Haddad reports

With growing pressure on councils to find better ways of managing waste plastics, one project currently underway across Victoria is testing the viability of reusing selected plastics within road building.

As part of an RMIT University project that evaluated the engineering properties and environmental impacts of plastic in roads, recycled plastics are currently being used in an asphalt mix to pave local council roads in Melbourne and across regional Victoria.

Led by RMIT professor Filippo Giustozzi, the project has found that recycled plastics can be used to improve performance in asphalt roads – benefiting road users by resisting rutting and cracking of the surface.

“On hot sunny days, the roads tend to soften, especially under slowmoving heavy loads,” Giustozzi says.

“With selected recycled plastics, we can enhance the performance of the road and bring it up to a level where there is no rutting

and cracking can be delayed by several years.”

Many trucks and cars are constantly driving over the same spots repeatedly, which erodes and damages the surface over time. The RMIT professor says recycled plastics have the potential to reduce the number of road-replacement works and therefore lead to significant cost savings in road maintenance.

When asked how this project came to fruition, Giustozzi says it came down to laboratory research that he wanted the public to actually see and benefit from, rather than just be read in a report.

“Having an issue with recycled waste, the Commonwealth government sponsored RMIT back in 2020 to fund research into recycled plastics being used in roads,” he says.

“They went through Austroads, which is the collective of Australian and New Zealand transport agencies, to fund our research.”

Since then, Giustozzi’s team has conducted two years of research,

collecting recycled plastic from Australia and New Zealand and analysing it for reuse in asphalt and bitumen. The project also investigated microplastics release, fuming at high temperatures, and future recyclability of plasticmodified asphalt.

The RMIT project team has also partnered with 10 Victorian councils that have already incorporated the recycled plastics into their local government roads.

Council roads

Providing one road each as part of the demonstration project, the 10 Victorian councils involved in the trial are the City of Melbourne, Banyule, Bayside, Moonee Valley, Hobsons Bay, Baw Baw, Latrobe, Casey, Mornington Peninsula and Wyndham.

Results have been positive, with the trial showing that asphalt plants can easily introduce small pellets or flakes of recycled plastics into their day-to-day operations.

Each council selected its own asphalt contractor and found that the recyclable-plastic asphalt mix was easy to produce.

“This shows us that the industry is ready to embrace this kind of technology, and that was the primary assessment for us,” Giustozzi says.

Stage two of this project is currently underway, which involves bringing materials from the road paving sites back to the RMIT laboratory and sampling them.

As part of the project, each council agreed that they would use two asphalt mixes in the road paving – one being a standard everyday mix and the other the recycled plastic mix.

Approximately 130 to 140kg of each mix was collected from every council and brought back to the RMIT laboratory, according to Giustozzi.

“For stage two of this project, we have started doing the analysis of those mixes and our aim is to find out which one performs better in a laboratory perspective,” he says.

Stage three of the project entails on-site monitoring, where Giustozzi says field-monitoring services will be provided by an external company.

“Using special vehicles, we will be able to see which of these two asphalt mixes performs better and have the least amount of damage incurred after over time,” he says.

Recycled plastics

Sourced locally from Victorian companies, the RMIT professor says the recycled plastics used included a combination of lowdensity polyethylene and linear low-density polyethylene – found in many different objects.

“One of the companies that provided the material recycle water tanks,” Giustozzi says.

“They take these water tanks and shred them, clean them, wash them and then recycle them back into new pellets.”

Another company provided a

combination of polyethylene and polypropylene, which Giustozzi says can have different origins, including post-consumer plastics and agricultural types of plastics recycled back into another plastic product.

What he found most interesting was the materials used at the Hobsons Bay Council, where the RMIT team engaged with a company called CRDC Global.

“CRDC Global have developed a technology that will allow them to avoid the challenge of separating plastics,” Giustozzi says.

“They put them all together and they get a product, which is like a plastic aggregate, that can be used for construction purposes.”

With this in mind, the Hobsons Bay Council collected its own plastic from council offices and brought it into CRDC Global, which converted that waste into plastic aggregates – eventually used to construct the new roads.

“It’s important to note that we are not taking waste and shovelling it back into the road, as we don’t want roads to be the next landfills,” Giustozzi says.

“These types of plastics have been studied for two years and each and every single small detail has been evaluated, from microplastics to the presence of toxic substances. Everything that was not corresponding to our criteria was disregarded.”

Fire ant control

With fire ant eradication efforts continuing to evolve in Queensland, quarries need to be aware of their legal obligations around detection and control of this invasive pest

Industry body Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia (CCAA) – which represents the heavy construction materials industry in Australia –has been putting the groundwork in to develop fire ant management guidance for quarries as the invasive species threatens to spread through human-assisted movement of materials that can carry fire ants.

First detected in Australia in 2001, the Red Imported Fire Ant is a South American agricultural pest that presents a major threat to our environment, economy and outdoor way of life. Fire ants can impact our native species, pose health risks to humans, pets and livestock, and could have a significant economic impact on agricultural and lifestyle industries.

Fire ants have the potential to cost Australia up to $2 billion per year, every year. Currently, an incursion is being treated in Queensland, with fire ant biosecurity zones covering much of the south east corner. These zones are reviewed and, if necessary, updated monthly.

An Emergency Order is also in place affecting the movement of earthmoving equipment and materials into NSW from Queensland, and the ACT recently announced restrictions on the transportation of equipment and mining and quarrying products from affected areas into the territory.

The National Fire Ant Eradication Program (NFAEP) is Australia’s largest biosecurity eradication program, focusing on strengthening containment and compliance, and intensifying program-led and community treatment using a systematic, outside-in approach.

With fire ants easily transported in materials such as soil, gravel, mulch and quarry products, CCAA is taking an active role in representing the industry at a legislative level as well as assisting industry to understand its obligations.

“Fire ant management is a significant concern for quarry operators, especially for those with operations within the declared fire ant biosecurity zones and for those

that transport quarry materials from these zones into New South Wales,” CCAA CEO Michael Kilgariff says.

“Any fire ant detections or suspected detections must be reported within 24 hours to the NFAEP by visiting fireants. org.au or calling 13 25 23 .”

Guidance for the quarry industry

To assist quarry owners and operators in meeting requirements around fire ant control, CCAA is currently engaged with the NFAEP, Biosecurity Queensland and the NSW Department of Primary Industries to create a set of guidelines to assist businesses in stopping the spread of fire ants.

“Like other environmental and biosecurity issues, controlling the spread of fire ants requires focused effort,” Kilgariff says.

“This involves surveillance to identify fire ants, treatment to prevent fire ant nests establishing and spreading on a property, specific risk-mitigation measures for moving quarry material, and training staff and record keeping.”

He says that CCAA is working with governments to address regulatory and cost barriers and represent industry-specific requirements for quarrying businesses.

“CCAA is looking forward to continuing our work with the NFAEP to develop an industry management guide over the coming months that will help industry and the regulator to have a common understanding of what compliance and fire ant-safe practices look like,” Kilgariff says.

Holcim visit

As part of the work to develop industry protocols, the NFAEP recently joined CCAA for an educational visit to Holcim’s Beenleigh Quarry in Queensland.

CCAA state director for Queensland, Roger Buckley says: “The recent tour of the Holcim Beenleigh Quarry provides an excellent illustration of how CCAA and our members are working with the NFAEP in Queensland to minimise the risk of fire ants spreading via humanassisted movement.

“The quarry industry operates differently to other industries impacted by fire ants, such as nurseries and agriculture, with its just-in-time material delivery system, often steep slopes and specific material processing, overburden management and stockpiling procedures. Discussion on such specifics helps industry and the regulator to have a common understanding of what compliance looks like.

“The site visit helped officials better understand how quarries operate so guidelines and upcoming updates to the biosecurity regulations can include workable measures for our industry.

“There is nothing quite as valuable as having representatives from the NFAEP visit and understand our member operations firsthand, to see what is already being done, as well as what may be practical in the future.”

fire ant biosecurity zones are legally obligated to check for fire ants before doing so, as well as employing fire ant-safe practices when moving or disposing of organic materials.

“It is important for quarry operators to keep an eye on these zones, especially if your quarry is currently just outside the zones, to see if the zone border has expanded recently to include your site. If that is the case, then you need to ensure your work practices meet the general biosecurity obligation,” Kilgariff says.

Cost-of-living crisis

With state and federal budgets being announced, funding for infrastructure needs to keep pace with inflation

We are now in budget mode with all states and territories, including the federal government, handing down budgets for the next financial year. All state budgets rely on federal financial support that are applied directly to state line items. I think these budgets are the most critical we have seen for some time.

The country is dealing with a cost-of-living crisis. This is not helped by rising inflation and, in turn, the associated interest rises to combat it. Across the country, state debt is increasing and the national debt is higher than we have ever experienced.

There is competition for government funding towards social programs, welfare, health, education, infrastructure and a range of cost-ofliving relief initiatives.

Economists are calling for caution; for the government to not implement policies which are inflationary and force the Reserve Bank Australia to increase interest rates.

In Queensland, it has already been flagged that government revenue is down from last year. Although it will be surplus, it will not be as high as projected. What is the government going to do with it? The first prebudget announcement was that it will provide households with a $1,000 credit for power bills, which will cost the state $2.5 billion. This is not means tested and comes at a time where there is nearly full employment. In some circles, it has been cynically received as an election vote buyer.

Cost-of-living relief should be given to those who need it, and a large portion of these measures would be

better spent on topping up budgets which, if maintained at last year’s levels, will deliver far less than it would have 12 to 24 months ago.

In Queensland, construction wages have been accelerated due to the Best Practice Industry Conditions (BPICs) – a policy that has also been adopted by the ACT and Western Australia. Due to this policy, wages are rising ahead of inflation, but the agreements are locking out productivity.

The state government has just approved the Renewables Best Practice Industry Conditions document. It is like the transport, rail and BPICs in that it prescribes a set of wage rates and conditions that are well above award and market rates. The industry can, and has, accepted rising wage rates in the past, but there has always been an element of productivity improvement associated with the increase.

The BPICs are now applied to such a wide range of state government projects that it is impossible to quarantine the wages, conditions and lack of productivity from the rest of the industry. The effect is industry-wide as other segments of the industry are being forced to compete to maintain a workforce. This is unsustainable for the industry, unsustainable for the state and unsustainable for the country.

The cruel twist in this policy is that nurses, teachers, firefighters, police officers and other government frontline service employees are not getting the same government sponsored wages and condition increases as those in the building and construction sector.

Those cynical about the $1,000 energy rebate may be right. $1,000 will not be enough to offset the higher cost of housing, transport and power for households because they all increase in price due to year-on-year wage increases; in excess of inflation and conditions that specifically forbid productivity measures.

Housing is one sector at the forefront of the cost-of-living crisis. 95 per cent of the dwellings required for our rising population will be delivered by the private sector. It is convenient to focus on the dwelling itself as the element of cost increases, but what is missed is the totality of the infrastructure required to support a dwelling.

The earthworks, road construction and other services – such as sewers, water, power, drainage, communications, public space, landscaping, water treatment, etc. –will all increase in cost, partly due to the government’s own policy. All will add to the cost of the dwelling, which will then have its own cost increase.

Budgets need to increase in value to offset the inflationary increases and positive productivity measures need to be allowed to be freely implemented. If this is not done, smaller projects such as the regional bridge upgrades critical for some communities, or rural overtaking lanes, intersection upgrades or flood proofing of sections of roads will be further delayed.

I think any cost-of-living rebate should be targeted at those most needing it and use surpluses to top up the infrastructure budgets to keep pace with inflation, fund planned infrastructure and continue to provide ongoing employment.

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) is highlighting the issue of poor access to safe toilet facilities for construction workers

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) has just kicked off its most recent campaign – ‘Better’? Just to hold it?

For too long women and men working in this industry have been required to travel to, share or use unsafe toilets, or have no access to toilets at all. Every state and territory in Australia requires employers to provide ‘appropriate’ facilities. So what does this mean?

While the federal government hasn’t designated what an appropriate toilet is, what it has

said is that toilets should be:

• F itted with a hinged seat and lid

• P rovided with adequate lighting and ventilation

• Clearly signposted

• F itted with a hinged door capable of locking from each side of the cubicle

• Positioned to ensure privacy for users

• Separate from any other room by an airlock, a sound-proof wall and clearly marked separate entrance

• Supplied with an adequate amount of toilet paper, hand washing

If you are in a mobile workplace, it is the responsibility of your employer to locate and provide access to a toilet, allowing additional time for travel in addition to your regular breaks.

For remote workers, employers need to provide portable toilets in a secure place with safe access. Do your toilets meet these standards?

Not being able to access safe toilets at work is a workplace safety risk. It is your right to have accessible and safe toilets at your workplace. We need to take action to enforce minimum standards.

Bridge Inn Road Upgrade unveils historical culvert ROADS

An environmental advisor working on the Bridge Inn Road Upgrade in Mernda and Doreen, north Melbourne, was first to notice the edge of what turned out to be a 7m-long timber structure as it emerged during excavation works near the Yan Yean Pipe Track.

T he project team and heritage consultant Biosis subsequently investigated the site and created a 3D model of the object from thousands of photographs.

Heritage experts confirmed the structure to be a timber culvert, thought to date back to the 1870s. T he team believes it was built to divert surface water following the construction of an aqueduct at Yan Yean.

After alerting Heritage Victoria to the discovery, recording it in detail and receiving relevant permissions, the project team carefully removed the culvert to analyse it further and allow excavation works to continue.

Federal funding

The federal government has announced that projects in Queensland and South Australia will receive $585 million in loans for two critical mineral mining projects

The federal government will provide $400 million to Australian company Alpha HPA to deliver Australia’s first high-purity alumina processing facility in Queensland.

The Alpha HPA project in Gladstone is expected to create around 490 jobs during construction and more than 200 jobs on completion.

The company will use Australian owned IP and technology to process high purity alumina –a critical mineral used in LED lighting, semiconductors and lithium-ion batteries and other high-tech applications.

Stage One of the Alpha HPA project is already operational, consisting of a precursor production facility in Gladstone that is the company’s first commercial application of its process to produce pure aluminium products.

Stage Two will see the construction of one of the largest single high purity aluminium (HPA) refineries in the world on a 10-hectare site capable of producing 10,000 tonnes of HPA a year. It is expected to be operational in 2025.

through the government’s $4 billion Critical Minerals Facility, as well as through the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility and EFA’s Commercial Account.

The government has also conditionally approved a $185 million loan to Renascor Resources to fast track the development of Stage One of its Siviour Graphite Project in South Australia. The original loan was approved in February 2022, and this decision means that Stage One of the project will be brought forward sooner.

Stage One will deliver around 150 construction jobs and 125 jobs once operational in Arno Bay on the Eyre Peninsula, with Stage Two expected to deliver a further 225 construction jobs and more than 120 jobs once it is operational in Bolivar, near Port Adelaide.

The open pit mine and graphite production plant is expected to have an annual graphite concentrate production of 123,000 tonnes per year.

The Construction Industry Culture Taskforce says a five-day work week would be a game-changer for the construction industry

The Construction Industry Culture Taskforce (CICT), led by the governments of NSW and Victoria along with the Australian Constructors Association, has released a report into culture in the construction industry, highlighting the problems of excessive work hours.

The Culture in Construction Pilot Projects: Interim Report, led by RMIT University, discusses the findings from five pilot infrastructure projects.

The results showed that an average 50-hour week over five days has strong support and does not appear to adversely affect site productivity.

“Cultural change in the industry is one of the key ways to address the acute skills shortage that has led to

escalating labour costs and stagnant productivity in an industry which has so many other reasons to be a place to have a great career,” CICT chair and interim chief commissioner of Infrastructure Australia Gabrielle Trainor says.

“The Culture Standard, designed to be part of the procurement process, means a level playing field for contractors and government clients buy in, project by project, to creating better, safer and more equitable work environments and support construction to become an industry of choice.”

A key finding in the report was the strong support for a five-day work week, with 84 per cent of salaried respondents and 61 per cent of waged

respondents preferring this schedule. This preference contrasts with the current industry norm of longer working hours, where 64 per cent of workers exceed 50 hours per week and Saturday work is routine.

“The lack of work and life balance faced by many construction workers can cause significant stress, relationship issues and reduced productivity,” Trainor says.

“It is a leading reason people exit the industry.

“However, the five-day work schedule preferred by the workers in the study allowed them to spend more time with their kids, play sport, see friends or relax, and a two-day weekend also ensured they were better rested and recovered from the work week.

“Monday to Friday is clearly shown in this study to be the ideal. But the standard provides for the reality that not every project can work five days. These findings also demonstrate the positive benefits of a deliberate and accountable focus on ensuring no-one works excessive hours and flexibility is built in, and where measures on diversity and wellbeing are also in place to support the other key aspects

Despite initial concerns about productivity and pay impacts, feedback from pilot project participants indicates minimal adverse effects.

“On our Mulgoa Road Upgrade Project Stage 1, our team reported that productivity was not adversely affected by implementing the Culture Standard’s five-day work week,”

Seymour Whyte Alliance NSW manager Greg Anderson says.

“With Saturdays typically seeing lower productivity across the industry, the loss of Saturday as a workday in the move to a Monday to Friday schedule was more than offset by the fact that we had a better rested, healthier and more satisfied workforce, which led to

productivity improvements across the five-day week.

“We also saw positive impacts in terms of recruitment, with other workers in the industry seeking to join our project due to the fiveday work week.”

Before the implementation of the draft Culture Standard at the pilot projects, some workers on wages, mostly young men, were concerned about the effect on their pay.

However, once the Culture Standard was operating, many of these same workers said that the effects on their pay had been minimal and, even though they may have experienced a small reduction in their earnings, the benefits of spending more time with their family and friends outweighed the cost.

CEO Jon Davies says while recognising the need to limit the hours worked, the pilots are also considering how to maintain the flexibility of projects to work the hours needed to meet operational requirements.

“The Culture Standard acknowledges the interconnectedness of working hours, wellbeing and gender diversity,” he says.

“Addressing working hours in isolation from wellbeing and gender diversity won’t yield the desired cultural transformation and outcomes.”

The study of the five pilot infrastructure projects, three in NSW and two in Victoria, proves the feasibility of implementing the Culture Standard and the rapid rewards that come out of it, CICT says.

“These results are very encouraging, and we are looking forward to finalising the pilot studies later this year to inform the case for broader adoption of the standard in procurement,” Trainor says.

“We thank our research team, led by RMIT Distinguished Professor Helen Lingard, for the rigour they have applied to this project.”

SafeWork SA has launched a campaign targeting the risks associated with working in noisy environments. Jackson Haddad writes

SafeWork SA’s six-month campaign will raise awareness of noiserelated risks and include compliance audits across the manufacturing, warehousing, transport, construction and mining industries.

With the audits having commenced in April, SafeWork SA inspectors are assessing how noise is being managed to prevent hearing loss of workers, in accordance with the work health and safety regulations. This includes who and when hearing tests are required.

Inspectors will issue authorised notices to businesses where noncompliance has been identified.

“The rising trend in occupational noise induced hearing loss claims suggests that more can be done to prevent harm,” SafeWork SA executive director Glenn Farrell says.

“We hope that by running this campaign, the awareness of the issue and measures to manage the risks of noise exposure will be raised and greater compliance will be observed.”

SafeWork SA says noise exposure is the most common preventable cause of occupational hearing loss, and once someone loses their hearing, it is irreversible.

Work injury insurance provider

Return To Work SA has recently seen an increase in the number of claims for work-related noise-induced hearing loss, according to a SafeWork SA spokesperson.

“Businesses should be conducting their own audits to assess whether or not they are complying with the requirements of WHS regulations and whether they have systems in place for managing high levels of noise,” SafeWork SA says.

“This should also include looking at ways to minimise noise exposure and conduct regular health monitoring of workers who are required to frequently wear hearing protection for exposure to noise which exceeds the exposure standard.”

Construction sites contain many sources of loud noise, such as power tools like jackhammers and drills, diesel powered generators and mobile plant with alarms, which can all contribute to harmful noise exposure.

While long-term exposure to noise might seem harmful to just hearing, it can also increase blood pressure, heart rate and stress, according to SafeWork SA. Other physical symptoms include reduced

concentration, insomnia and changes to hormone, cholesterol and stomach acid levels.

On the back of research, SafeWork SA says exposure to noisy work sites is also associated with risks of accidents – workers with hearing loss greater than 15dB are three times more likely to be at risk of multiple accidents.

Under the Work Health and Safety Act and Regulations 2012 (SA), businesses must provide audiometric (hearing) testing for a worker if they are required to frequently use personal hearing protectors as a control measure for noise that exceeds the exposure standard. This testing must take place within the first three months of their employment and then every two years.

Without these tests, SafeWork SA says it is difficult for employers to determine if systems put in place to combat noise exposure are working.

Magni has announced the release of several new telehandlers for the European market

Magni released two new telehandlers at Intermat 2024 in Paris – the TH 3.6 fixed telescopic handler and three new rotating telescopic handlers, the RTH 6.22, 6.26 and 6.31.

With a capacity of three tonnes and a maximum lifting height of 5.8 metres, the new TH 3.6 is the most compact fixed telescopic handler in the TH range, intended for construction, logistics and agriculture.

The TH 3.6 is able to lift its maximum load to a height of 5.4 metres, 2,500kg to the maximum height and 1,100kg to a horizontal reach of more than three metres. Its low-level design makes it ideal for tight spaces, while retaining optimal ground clearance for uneven terrains, Magni says.

A 55kW (75 horsepower) Deutz Stage V engine gives it a top speed of 35km/h and there are three steering modes: front, concentric and crab.

The three RTH models are all equipped with an elevating cab that provides greater visibility, with a maximum height of 1.5m.

The federal government has announced funding for 20,000 additional free training places for construction apprentices

The federal government has announced an allocation of $90.6 million in the 2024–25 federal Budget to boost the number of skilled workers in the construction and housing sector.

Minister for housing Julie Collins says the funding is necessary in order to address the national skills gap and increase housing supply.

“This Budget continues to remove cost barriers to education and training, and incentivise Australians to train in areas the economy needs them most, with $88.8 million for 20,000 additional fee free TAFE training places to increase the pipeline of workers for construction and housing,” Collins says.

The Budget also includes $1.8 million to streamline skills assessments for around 1,900 potential migrants from countries with comparable qualifications who want to work in Australia’s construction and housing sector, and prioritise the processing of around 2,600 Trades Recognition Australia skills assessments in targeted occupations.

Two underground emergency exercises at a Queensland coal mine have been hailed as a success by Resources Safety & Health Queensland (RSHQ)

Two events, known as ‘Level 1 emergency exercises’, were hosted by Anglo American’s Aquila Underground Coal Mine, located 31km southwest of Middlemount in the Bowen Basin.

The exercises were run by RSHQ along with the Queensland Mines Rescue Service and industry safety and health representatives, to give coal mine workers the chance to practice disaster scenarios so they’re prepared in the event of a real-life emergency.

In the first scenario, a load haul dump (LHD) and an underground car called a Driftrunner collided. Both drivers were injured, and both tried to flee but one driver went missing.

In the second scenario, a LHD machine caught fire, burning the operator on his face and hands. He called his control room operator to let them know he was walking away from the incident, but then went missing.

The second scenario was particularly tricky because it affected all underground mine locations at the time.

In both scenarios, mine workers and specialised mine rescue teams had to test their mine site incident response, their ability to triage injured coal mine workers, use rescue equipment correctly, communicate effectively and in some instances self-escape.

Sydney tops Australian cities for construction costs

Sydney continues to be the most expensive place to build in Australia, a new report from Arcadis reveals, but it’s still not as expensive as New Zealand.

The International Construction Costs 2024 report analyses global construction cost data to create a list of the world’s 100 most expensive cities to build in, with London, Geneva, Zurich, Munich and New York City topping the index.

In Australia, Sydney comes in at number 48 on the index, with Brisbane (51), Melbourne (54), Perth (62) and Adelaide (67) all making the top 100. Christchurch in New Zealand, however, is more expensive to build in, coming in at position 30 on the index, followed by Auckland at 46.

Compared to the previous year’s data, construction costs have fallen for Australian cities, which Arcadis says is due to a weaker Australian dollar.

Arcadis says that, in 2024, construction-specific price inflation is forecast to continue to fall substantially in most construction markets, with stable and slowing price growth seen in both Auckland and Sydney in 2024 compared to 2023, though Brisbane is seeing a faster price growth this year compared to last year.

In Australia, data centres and industrial projects have been key standouts in terms of performance, Arcadis says.

“Looking forward, Australia has a significant pipeline of work across nearly all states – heavily skewed by the public sector and focusing on

social infrastructure and transport, in addition to work on the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics in Queensland,” it adds.

“However, capacity has fallen, with construction insolvencies now well above the long-term trend, leaving questions about how the strong forward workload pipeline can be delivered.

“There is growing movement towards low carbon design and construction, but in practice, these projects have only reached the feasibility and planning stages so far.

“In NSW, the newly-elected Minns government is doubling down on commitments to net zero by 2050 and providing significant investment into stimulating private sector participation into renewable energy – a trend which is likely to continue into 2024.

“It is also leveraging infrastructure projects to densify city development, with a growth in housing around new metro stations in Sydney likely to be a key feature in the next couple of years.

“Meanwhile, in Brisbane, infrastructure activity will ramp up as Olympic deadlines edge nearer.”

Trimble has acquired Flashtract, adding its construction payment and subcontractor compliance technology and renaming it Trimble Pay

Trimble has acquired Flashtract and its billing technology that streamlines the flow of payment and compliance information between construction general contractors and subcontractors.

Rebranded as Trimble Pay, the technology is used to manage payment applications, lien waivers and other compliance and billing documentation electronically. Trimble says this simplifies communication and document transfers between parties.

“Secure, reliable and fast electronic management of payments and lien waivers can be vital benefits to contractors, but many still manage these processes manually,” Trimble vice president of construction management solutions Lawrence Smith says.

“Adding the ability to manage these workflows with subs electronically through Trimble Pay helps contractors improve compliance and keep projects on schedule and budget by reducing the two to three days of manual work per month by project managers or accountants.”

Trimble Pay will be initially integrated with the capabilities of Trimble’s Viewpoint Vista ERP solution for construction. It will also extend the connected construction technology ecosystem that Trimble Construction One brings to the market, the company says.

Trimble Pay is expected to be available later this year as part of the Trimble Construction One software suite.

Phosphate go-ahead

Queensland’s Paradise South phosphate production complex has received approval

A new phosphate mine in northwest Queensland has been given the green light, with the granting of mining leases by the Queensland government.

North West Phosphate’s Paradise South complex is located 130 kilometres northwest of Mount Isa, next to Glencore’s Lady Loretta zinc mine. Paradise South will be an open cut mining operation with a schedule to excavate up to two million tonnes of phosphate ore per annum over an initial 20-year mine life. The Paradise South mine will include a processing plant onsite to produce phosphate concentrate.

It is expected to create 200 jobs during construction, while 245 workers will be employed once operational, the state government says.

North West Phosphate intends to use local services which will provide a further boost to the northwest Queensland economy.

sector but is also needed for the technologies the world will adopt as it moves to a net zero economy,” Queensland resources and critical minerals minister Scott Stewart says.

“That is why the Commonwealth government has added phosphorous to its new Strategic Materials list.”

The Queensland government has also announced that it has agreed to invest $20 million from the Queensland Critical Minerals and Battery Technology Fund in EQ Resources’ Mt Carbine Tungsten Mine in Far North Queensland for the reopening of historic underground mining operations.

The government says the underground deposit of the open pit is still relatively unexplored and the mine extension will support up to 100 new jobs.

Bobcat has introduced its electric telehandler concept to the world after presenting it in Paris at Intermat 2024

Bobcat’s TL25.60e electric telehandler is powered by liquid-cooled batteries for zero emission propulsion. With a rated operating capacity of 2.5 tonnes, Bobcat says the concept machine matches the performance offered by its diesel-powered equivalent.

Delivering minimal working noise and reduced operating costs, the TL25.60e is powered by three separated electric motors designed to maximise efficiency.

It has the same compact dimensions as its diesel-powered equivalent model (TL25.60) and has a maximum speed of 25km per hour.

“Just like its diesel-powered counterpart, the Bobcat TL25.60e has been built with versatility at its core,” Bobcat EMEA telehandler product manager Serge Boyer says.

“Thanks to its compact footprint, low noise levels and zero-emission operations, this concept telehandler is suitable for a diverse range of applications, including work on confined job sites and in city centres.”

The electric concept machine is still in development and not yet commercially available.

Komatsu has released its latest rigid dump truck to the European market – the HD605-10

Komatsu’s HD605-10 rigid dump truck is now available in Europe after being unveiled at Intermat 2024, in Paris.

Designed to maximise productivity while minimising operational costs, Komatsu says the machine boasts enhanced engine power and torque, as well as fuel-saving technologies.

The HD605-10 is equipped with a 818 horsepower (610kW) stage V engine, with the machine providing three selectable modes for various applications – economy, economy light and power.

A new high-efficiency cooling system and lightweight body option ensure the machine is using fuel efficiently and ultimately reducing operating costs, Komatsu says.

“Our development teams have prioritised customer needs to deliver a machine that not only builds on the reliability of its predecessor but also introduces significant performance enhancements,” Komatsu Europe product manager Juuso Ahola says.

“These enhancements include increased power, weight reductions, expanded load capacity up to 64 tonnes with a 43 cubic metre body, improved durability, enhanced visibility systems and reduced fuel consumption.”

Safety features of the HD605-10 include a LED lighting system for improved visibility, illuminated stair walkways for safe access to the operator cabin and a brake performance check system to verify brake functionality before operation.

The machine also includes an external seat belt reminder lamp outside the cabin and highperformance retarder brakes for enhanced safety during operation, even on steep downhill slopes.

With hill start assist and cruise control, Komatsu says this dump truck is a pleasure to drive for any operator.

Volvo Construction Equipment has upgraded its L30 and L35 wheel loaders for the North American market

Volvo CE has redesigned its L30 and L35 compact wheel loaders to improve navigation and ease-of-use, it says.

The 5.7 to 6.4-tonne machines have gained a greater range of sight to the front and sides, due to a slimmer dashboard.

Operators will also benefit from a larger 5-inch (12.7cm) display navigated via a jog wheel, as well as a redesigned multi-function joystick – already found on the L20 Electric and L25 Electric models.

There will also be a set of new options designed to ease machine operation, including an advanced boom kick-out and bucket leveller.

The bucket leveller has boundary limits consisting of an automatic lift and tilt, where the boom and attachment move automatically into pre-programmed positions with a press of the activation button on the joystick.

It will also have boundary limits consisting of a lift and tilt limiter, to prevent the boom and attachment from going above and beyond a pre-set elevation/depth and to avoid hitting obstacles. A new lift and tilt speed limiter option is also available.

Series expansion

Liebherr has released a new mid-sized wheel loader series consisting of three models to the European market – the L 526, L 538 and L 546

Liebherr’s three new mid-sized wheel loader models are part of its eighth generation series, with the company saying the machines provide a significant increase in performance compared to its predecessor.

The L 526 has approximately 20 per cent more engine power and over 20 per cent higher breakout forces than the previous generation, says Liebherr.

With an optimised travel drive, Liebherr says the L 538 and L 546 provide increased traction.

In their standard versions, the three models have bucket sizes between 2.2 and 3 cubic metres and the front section of the loaders has been reinforced to prepare for handling heavy loads.

Liebherr says new lift arms and optimised z-bar kinematics significantly increase performance, even with heavy attachments such as high dump buckets or log grapples.

The new lift arms are supported by numerous equipment options for industry-specific applications, such as high lift arms, which are an extended variant of the z-bar kinematics – ensuring greater range and efficient loading processes at all heights.

For wheel loader applications that regularly require different attachments, Liebherr says there is a view-optimised quick coupler and the fully automatic Likufix quick-coupler system. This allows the machine operator to change between mechanical and hydraulic working tools from the cab quickly and safely at the touch of a button –saving time and reducing the risk of accidents.

Characterised by more powerful engines and higher maximum torque at a lower nominal speed, the L 526, L 538 and L 546 boast engine power of 116kW, 129kW and 138kW respectively.

A new optional assistance system can be installed on the rear of the loader to warn operators with visual and auditory alerts, of incoming rear dangers.

Distinguishing between humans and objects using smart sensors, the optional system automatically slows to a standstill once an alert goes off –avoiding potential accidents.

Volvo’s ‘Electric Worksite’ study looked into the infrastructure needs for electric machinery working on an urban worksite

A multi-partner study, ‘Electric Worksite’, has mapped the infrastructure needs for electric machines through testing at real-life worksites in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The goal of the Electric Worksite project was for Volvo and its partners from across the supply chain to gain a better understanding of the opportunities and needs when putting electric equipment to work in urban applications.

The project looked into testing electric machines, energy storage and charging infrastructure at different urban sites.

The tests were carried out in reallife construction sites with electricpowered wheeled and crawler excavators, wheel loaders and load carriers, weighing between 3.5–30 tons (3.2–27 tonnes), some of which were battery-powered and others cable-connected.

The study concluded that all tests were successful, with the main learnings being:

• electric construction machines can perform the same work to the same standard as fossil-fuelled variants in urban construction projects

• workers in and around electric machines experience several positive effects in the handling of machines and the working environment

• l ike most construction projects in general, the success of electrification is based on foresight, planning and flexibility

• new requirements for power supply are solved based on machine type and available electricity – such as electrical cabinets, mobile charging stations, cable-connected machines and potentially energy storage units

• end customers need to be made aware of new opportunities and challenges with electric machines, as well as of existing business conditions and contracting requirements towards contractors and subcontractors.

Volvo CE project managed the tests and provided electric machines in various sizes and models, as well as technical solutions for charging such as mobile energy storage and cable management systems.

“Electric machines are already available on the market and performing well, but the challenge can often be how to establish a reliable supporting infrastructure,” Volvo CE research leader Bobby Frank says.

“This project confirmed that when all actors in the value chain around a construction site collaborate, both from the public and the private sector, we solve the infrastructure around it. In all tests, regardless of application and location, the electric machines performed as well as, if not better than, equivalent models with combustion engines, but without harmful emissions and disturbing noise.”

Driving progress with contracting demands

Municipalities and government bodies play an important role in enabling and driving the transition, for example by setting requirements for emission-free vehicles and machinery in the procurement of construction work, and by establishing clear city development goals for all societal players to work towards. The City of Gothenburg was keen to be involved in this project, seeing that there are many benefits in accelerating electrification within construction.

“As the City of Gothenburg is a major procurer of construction and civil engineering contracts, we can and want to be involved in leading the transition towards an emissionfree industry,” City of Gothenburg business developer for electrified transports at the environmental management department Peter Lindgren says.

“We also see many other benefits for both the surrounding environment and the working environment, such as reduced noise and improved air quality,.”

For the construction contractor NCC, the Electric Worksite has meant evaluating opportunities and challenges with electrification, together with other actors in the value chain.

“Once again, we can conclude that the most important take-away is that we need to get involved early in the project to plan for electrification – because the opportunities to influence emissions are greatest in the planning stage,” NCC Infrastructure sustainability manager Pernilla Löfås says.

“To scale up the use of electric construction machines and vehicles, increased competence is also needed throughout the value chain. We also need electric machines to be demanded in the contracting by customers, and that they set requirements that drive the development forward.”

Cummins showed its B6.7H hydrogen engine for the first time at Intermat, designed for off-highway applications

Cummins Inc. unveiled a new engine for the off-highway market at Intermat 2024.

“The introduction of this clean sheet diesel engine marks another milestone, as we continue our commitment to diversifying our portfolio of combustion technologies,” Cummins executive director off highway Beau Lintereur says.

“With this launch, we are bringing customers a smaller and easier to install platform, that will reduce operating costs and the overarching environmental impact.”

Cummins displayed its latest B6.7 agnostic engine platform.

This design enables clean diesel, biodiesel, natural gas and hydrogen fuel applications with small head adjustment tweaks on the production line. All engines in the range use the same transmission, cooling systems and hydraulic systems. This common base engine design reduces complexity for equipment manufacturers and their customers that are looking to implement a diverse range of fuels.

The inclusion of the B6.7H hydrogen engine in Cummins’ agnostic engine range is aimed at a wide range of off-highway machinery, with a top rating of 290 horsepower (216kW) and a peak torque of 1,200Nm targeted for Stage VI/Tier 5 markets.

Case Construction Equipment has upgraded its mid-sized wheel loader range in Europe, with the launch of an eighth model

The 651G Evolution fills a gap between the 621G and the 721G, in a new release for the European market. Based on the parent model 621G, the new model offers improved loading performance, says Case Construction Equipment.

The larger 721G, 821G and 921G Evolution models have also been upgraded and now boast increased tipping loads and bucket dump heights, further improving productivity for customers.

This additional performance has allowed Case to offer a new range of higher capacity rehandling buckets on all models from the 651G to the 921G, with curved side edges and a redesigned top guard delivering increased capacities, improved bucket penetration and material retention.

The 651G Evolution, along with the three larger models, features reinforced front and rear chassis sections to cope with the increased performance. Heavy duty axles are now fitted as standard, with a choice of differentials on each axle. Customers can choose between a 100 per cent differential lock on the front axle and an open differential on the rear, a 100 per cent differential lock on the front and a limited slip differential at the rear, or a limited slip differential in both axles.

possibility of automatic engagement of ride control at a set speed. The G-Series loaders already allow the operator to access a digital manual through the monitor, while the cab features adjustable electrohydraulic control levers, new power modes and configurable buttons on the main console.

An integrated weigh load scale allows the operator to accurately load and record material moved, with the availability of a wide range of data sets, including job ticket, customer name, truck registration and target load data. All of this information can be automatically transmitted to the site office via the Case SiteWatch telematic portal.

Case G-Series Evolution wheel loaders are powered by EU Stage V FPT Industrial diesel engines. These have a capacity of 4.5 litres on the 521G, 6.7 litres on the 621G to 921G and 8.7 litres for the 1021G and 1121G.

Wastegate turbochargers are used on all models up to the 921G, with variable geometry turbos for the two larger models. All engines use FPT’s Hi-eSCR2 after-treatment system, with no requirement for exhaust gas recirculation. The machines are compatible with a range of synthetic and sustainable fuels, including HVO and XTL.

Yuchai Heavy Industry has launched a series of electric skid steers to the Chinese market

Chinese OEM Yuchai Heavy Industry has released a variety of electric skid steers for the Chinese market, including the S150 skid steer, S35 Max long-endurance skid steer, S35 Pro skid steer, Z25 mini loader and the X35 Max skid steer.

Featuring a built-in battery thermal balance system, Yuchai says the machines can achieve faster response times compared to traditional skid steers – increasing power by 25 per cent compared to its diesel fuel counterparts.

Yuchai says the S150 supports a maximum charging power of 80kW while the S35 Max can work continuously for 9–11 hours on a full charge, making it the longestendurance electric skid steer globally, according to the manufacturer.

The Z25 mini electric loader can be used in various fields such as agriculture, animal husbandry and municipal services.

With a 20kW/h large-capacity battery, it can work continuously for six to eight hours per charge, meeting the requirements for daily use without the trouble of refuelling.

Yuchai excavators and Multione wheel loaders are available through Yuchai Contruction Equipment Australia. The new skid steers will not be made available in Australia at this time.

Yanmar Compact Equipment (Yanmar CE) has unveiled a new electric wheel loader and electric mini excavator

Yanmar CE unveiled its new V8e wheel loader and SV17e mini excavator at Intermat 2024 in Paris.

Delivering zero emissions while working, Yanmar CE says the new machines are tailored to meet the demands of a range of construction applications and indoor environments, without compromising power and performance.

Wheel loader

The V8e encompasses a 4.5 tonne operating weight and boast four working modes – bucket, fork, eco and power.

With a bucket volume between 0.8 and 1.2 cubic metres and payload on forks of 1.89 tonnes, Yanmar CE says the fully electric machine has been designed to maximise performance.

Featuring a newly designed cabin, the V8e provides operators with an adjustable armrest and steering column, heated seat and LED headlights and work lights to enhance visibility.

To make charging easier, the machine comes with an on-board fast charger and includes most common adaptors, which Yanmar CE

says allows for easy integration into existing power infrastructures.

The V8e is available with a 39.9kW/h standard battery, with an option to upgrade to 53.2kW/h.

Mini excavator

Powered by an 18.3kW/h battery, the SV17e features two operating modes to make the most of its battery life and adapt to different project demands.

The electric mini excavator has an operating weight of 1.9 tonnes and has been designed for working in compact spaces – measuring 2.33 metres in height and possessing a variable width of 0.98 to 1.32 metres.

Yanmar CE says its near-silent operation minimises auditory disturbance, enhancing comfort for operators and making it suitable for indoor work and noise-restricted areas.

The SV17e has maximum digging depth of 2.62 metres, a reach of up to 4 metres and a maximum dumping height of 2.6 metres.

Dynaset’s HRVB hydraulic recycling vacuum bucket was awarded a gold medal in the Earthworks, Demolition & Transport category at the Intermat Innovation Awards 2024. The ceremony was held on the evening of April 24, where Dynaset CEO Anni Karppinen and R&D director Pasi Yli-Kätkä received the prize.

The HRVB hydraulic recycling vacuum bucket combines the movability of a traditional excavator bucket with a powerful vacuum cleaner and an air blower. Firstgreen Industries has launched its latest line up of electric and cabinless skid steer loaders to the US market – dubbed ‘Rockeat’

Firstgreen Industries has launched its Rockeat electric and cabinless skid steer loaders in the US.

The line-up includes the model 700 and 1200 skid steers that are 1.7m and 1.8m wide and have a load capacity of 680kg and 1,497kg, respectively, and are compatible with lead-acid and lithium batteries.

Designed with a low clearance and a 360-degree camera, Firstgreen says the skid steers reduce the risk of accidents and injuries on job sites through its cabinless design and remote operability.

As an all-electric machine, the Rockeat skid steers produce zero carbon emissions and near silent operation, making them suited to indoor use and noise-restricted areas.

The federal government is investing $330 million into clean energy and emissions reduction projects at heavy industrial sites around the country

The Australian government’s Powering the Regions Fund is funding $330 million for nine manufacturing and mining projects around the country, as demand for low emissions products grows around the world.

These nine projects will create hundreds of new jobs during construction, the federal government says, and secure existing regional roles that support Australian families and communities.

830,000 tonnes of emissions will be cut every year because of these projects, the government says, equivalent to taking over a quarter of a million cars off Australian roads.

“This $330 million investment in Australia’s hard-to-abate manufacturing and mining facilities is about securing the future of highquality, low-emissions products made right here,” climate change and energy minister Chris Bowen says.

Projects receiving funding include:

• Cement Australia receiving $52.9 million to upgrade its kiln and increase the use of alternative fuels such as waste to reduce emissions at its site in Railton, Tasmania

• $93.9 million for the QAL Alumina refinery in Gladstone, QLD, which is retrofitting a low temperature digestion circuit into QAL’s existing high temperature unit, to reduce coal and gas consumption

• Adbri cement manufacturing in Port Adelaide, SA, receiving $50 million to install vertical roller mills

• $ 44.4 million for Shoalhaven Starches food manufacturing in Nowra, NSW, which is deploying heat recovery upgrades and enabling infrastructure to reduce gas consumption

• Grange Resources Iron Ore mine in Savage River, Tasmania, receiving $15 million to electrify its mine as part of transition from an open cut to an underground mine –reducing diesel use

• $ 5 million for Grange Resources’ Iron Pellet plant in Tasmania, which is modifying four vertical shaft furnaces to enable shift from anthracite (coal) to natural gas

• Liberty metal manufacturing site in Bell Bay, Tasmania, receiving $766,000 to produce 500 tons (453.6 tonnes) of biocarbon to test as an alternative to coke in smelting process.

WA construction apprentices to get $1,000 milestone payments

The WA government has announced $52.3 million in funding for building and construction apprenticeships and training opportunities as part of 2024-25 State Budget.

Milestone payments of $1,000 will be made available for eligible apprentices after they complete training milestones, with a range of new initiatives funded in the 2024–25 State Budget.

Funded through the Construction Training Fund (CTF), the $21.2 million Apprenticeship Support Package expands on the existing successful Apprentice Completion Grant program, which has issued more than 1,000 completion payments since it was announced in 2023–24.

The first $1,000 annual milestone payments will be available for eligible apprentices to claim from 1 January 2025, with claims able to be made up to 12 months after completion.

A $16 million boost to the Government’s Apprentice Tool Allowance will mean eligible apprentices are entitled to a $1,000 rebate to help them purchase tools or safety equipment at both commencement and completion of their training.

In recognition of the costs associated with employing and training an apprentice, $26 million has been allocated through the 2024–25 State Budget to provide additional

support to employers in the building and construction industry.

Eligible employers of three to fouryear apprentices will receive a base grant of $15,000, up from $12,000 previously. Employers of 18 to 24month apprentices will receive a base grant of $12,500, up from $10,000.

Bonus rates for employing a female or mature-aged apprentice or trainee will also be doubled from 20 per cent to 40 per cent, to help improve diversity in building and construction and address skills shortages by tapping into traditionally underutilised areas of the workforce.

A further $5 million has been allocated to CTF’s Capital Grants Program for private registered training organisations to upgrade facilities and equipment to expand their construction training capacity.

The state government is also continuing its investment of $470,00 to provide regional building and construction apprentices with an increased travel and accommodation allowance to assist with transport and accommodation costs incurred if required to travel more than 70 kilometres from home as part of offthe-job training.

Need for speed

A Liebherr crawler dozer was used to build the track for Enduropale du Touquet Pas-de-Calais beach motorcycle race earlier this year

Earlier this year, France was home to the biggest motorcycle beach race in the world – Enduropale du Touquet Pas-deCalais – requiring the construction of the 13km race track at Le Touquet on the north coast.

Construction company Boulard TP company used a PR 716 crawler dozer from Liebherr to transform the beach at Le Touquet into a track for quads and motorcycles over a time span of three weeks.

Liebherr says the PR 716’s wide tracks ensure optimum weight distribution while minimising ground pressure, which gives specific advantages on soft or uneven terrain such as the motorcycle beach track.

Liebherr Generation 8 crawler dozers have three levels of assistance systems: free grade for active blade stabilisation during fine grading, definition grade for automatic blade positioning when creating 2D surfaces, and 3D grade for complex terrain modelling. When creating race tracks, definition grade simplifies the process, saving time and resources, the company says.

Weld Australia has launched two free online welder safety training courses

With welding being a potentially dangerous process with different hazards depending on the welding location, Weld Australia has developed two free online welder safety training courses.

The courses cover a broad range of subject material across welding processes. They provide details of hazards that may be encountered and how to manage them in the workplace. The hierarchy of controls is discussed, with a particular focus on engineering controls and the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

The courses also reinforce procedures that should be used, such as creating the correct set up and use of equipment and the correct handling of gas cylinders and welding machines. Assessment and certification for course participants is also available.

“The courses can be used by companies to enhance their staff induction program to ensure all employees start with a solid foundation in safety practices,” Weld Australia CEO Geoff Crittenden says.

Forklift surge

Interact Analysis’ global forklift market analysis shows strong growth

Chinese forklift manufacturers are taking a higher share of the market in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) – at nearly 15 per cent in 2022, compared to about 8 per cent in 2020.

China saw a year on year increase in January 2024 of 90.4 per cent while the North American region experienced a historical peak in sales in 2023, particularly for counterbalance trucks. However, geopolitical instability and previous high growth saw the market decline in 2023 in EMEA.

Looking at the main global forklift manufacturers, Toyota’s growth rate in North America saw a 2.6 per cent increase in shipments in 2023 and a 28.6 per cent increase in sales.

Jungheinrich has not yet released an annual report but mentioned in its third quarter report that orders have decreased, likely due to fluctuations in the European market.

Kion also saw a decline in orders for Europe and the United States in 2023, but an increase of 63 per cent year on year in APAC.

Hyster-Yale’s forklift revenue increased by approximately 5 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to 2022, with a shift seen towards higher priced and larger capacity forklifts.
