FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome Our final edition for 2024 is here, which is an opportunity to reflect on the year that has been while looking ahead to 2025. It has been another eventful year for the industry, starting at government level, with a new Agriculture Minister appointed and recent updates around right to repair laws. There have been changes at the National Farmers Federation through the year, with CEO Tony Mahar stepping down, along with David Jochinke becoming the new president mid-year – who we spoke to in detail shortly after he took on the role. The year has presented its challenges, both in terms of weather conditions in various parts of Australia alongside a broader economic downturn. A new year is a fresh start though, and I hope the agricultural community can all find reasons to look to 2025 with optimism. In this edition, we are excited to bring a major announcement from Ford which, while not exclusive to the agriculture industry, will certainly have appeal to a lot of Australian farmers. We head overseas for the Tractor of the Year awards, which were announced at a recent EIMA event in Italy, and we highlight the winners across all categories. There is also a cross-section of news and information related to various machinery types which showcases the breadth of what Australian agriculture requires. On the cover, we hear from a Queensland grazing business about their use of Hercules wheel loaders from Brisbane Mini Excavator Sales. Among the products which we highlight in depth are JBS manure spreaders – available through Atlas Ag, Balzer chaser bins – which are distributed by MJM Equipment,

Farms & Farm Machinery

and BvL mixer wagons – sold here through Michaels Group. New products are always on the horizon, and this edition showcases a new Landini Powerfarm tractor that distributor Inlon is excited about, along with the new A Series of tractors from manufacturer Antonio Carraro. Agriculture always provides an insight into how technology is changing practices, and two articles in this edition show the contrast of this. We discuss a virtual fencing trial at a Victorian smart farm which could change the way cattle are managed, while also previewing a unique event in New South Wales where vintage headers will be brought out for one day of active work. New Victorian Merlo dealer Farm & Diesel is profiled, while we also discuss how dealership group Intersales is using a unique opportunity to conduct staff training. We also hear from a Kerfab customer about his attachments, while bringing a bunch of industry and dealer news, all designed to keep farmers informed about what is ahead. Thank you for reading the magazine throughout 2024 and we look forward to telling more stories in the year ahead. Happy reading!

FARMING

Kerry Pietsch will recreate history on January 11 by using his vintage header collection to harvest wheat. Image: Kim Woods

Historic harvest Vintage machinery collector Kerry Pietsch is holding a one-off event to showcase his historical headers harvesting a wheat crop – a scene that he says may be once in a lifetime The agricultural industry has long embraced advancements in technology, creating benefits such as higher productivity and reduced manual labour. Enormous combine harvesters are all too common nowadays for these exact reasons, but one man aiming to shine a light on the machinery of old is Pleasant Hills-based farmer and vintage header collector Kerry Pietsch. Pietsch’s passion for vintage headers goes back as far as he can remember, admitting that he believes he was born in the wrong era. “The fact that there’s machinery over 100 years old and still going today, I just love the way they used to manufacture,” he says. “My first collectable was a really old tractor, and it needed a lot of work to get up and going – that’s when I began to restore historic machinery.”

Event from the past Now with one of Australia’s largest private collections of vintage headers, Pietsch has decided to hold a one-off event to showcase the machines in action, which otherwise would be hidden from the world. As principal of the Warrangong Heritage Collection Incorporated, Pietsch is holding the Warrangong Vintage Harvest Day at his own Pleasant Hills farm, near Henty in New South Wales, on January 11. In a setting that will be reminiscent of early 1900s farming, 27 tractor-drawn vintage headers will be fired up to harvest a 15-hectare Ford wheat crop. “All of these machines were scrap at one point in time, so they probably never would have been seen again,” Pietsch says. “To have them all in action is going to be mind-boggling, and a scene that will

not have been witnessed in the bush for generations.” His collection spans a stripper, headers and harvesters, including horse-drawn, PTO and self-propelled machines of many makes and models, and it’s taking up a fair share of room in an increasing number of sheds. The collection ranges from a horsedrawn 1902 David Shearer Maker’s Mannum stripper to a 1980 John Deere 1051 PTO header, while the collection also includes a homemade header. To build the homemade header, a Gleaner crawler tractor was converted to a harvester with planks of wood on the tracks to help with traction in wet conditions. Two gear boxes feature – one to drive the tractor and one to operate the harvester. The Warrangong Vintage Harvest Day will not be the first time Pietsch has shown

off his collection, having held a successful vintage harvest day in February 2014, but 2025 is sure to be his last event. He concedes that there will be some machines on display that were also shown 10 years ago, however the majority have never been seen before. One of the reasons for following-up the original event a decade later was to specifically show the machinery working – rather than just being on static display. “We had a bit of issue at the original event where external people were bringing in their own machines, but they didn’t function that well when we put them in the crop,” Pietsch says. “I had told them that the headers had to be working, so this time round it’s going to be just my own machinery.” Apart from this issue at the first event, that day in 2014 was a blast for Pietsch, remembering it like it was yesterday. “It was so fantastic, we got warm weather and people really loved it,” he says. “Over the years, I’ve had people keep asking when’s the next one, so I decided there’s no better time than 10 years on. “You can’t guarantee anything with your health, and I’m getting older, so it was now or never for me.”

8

Century-old centrepiece At the centre of the showcase will be a restored 1925 Sunshine auto header which marked its centenary in 2024 at Henty Machinery Field Days. Designed by Henty’s own Headlie Shipard Taylor, the machine was made in Sunshine, Melbourne, 100 years ago. When Pietsch first bought the header, it was without a motor and grain bin, so he knew it would take a long time to source these parts, but now after three years, he says it can now go straight in the crop and strip it. Over the course of the three-year project, Pietsch restored the machine as close as possible to its original state, including repainting it in its primary colour and sourcing a big box. “These boxes are fairly rare, and I’d seen photos of Sunshine headers with that box on them, so I didn’t want a bagging platform,” he says. “I painted it all the colours that it would have originally had on it, and it had an enormous amount of the original pinstriping. “I’m probably the only one in Australia that’s got this specific model.” Pietsch says being able to showcase

these machines at the upcoming harvest day will provide a unique insight on how his, and attendees’ own, ancestors farmed a century ago. Some of his machines provide these insights quite literally, such as the fully restored US manufactured Cockshutt, that once belonged to his uncle. Henty Machinery Field Days is a major sponsor of the Warrangong Vintage Harvest Day, with Pietsch thanking them for their support. Gates will open at 8am on the day of the event, with demonstrations set to get underway at 9am. Vintage machinery enthusiast Kevin Elphick will also provide talks throughout the day, while lunch, snacks and refreshments will be for sale. Entry fees are listed as follows, adults $22, concession $18, children 12 to 16 years $10, and under 12s can enter free. Tickets will be available online or at the gate via card only. “This day will be very special as 95 per cent of young people have never seen any of these headers operating,” Pietsch says. “They only ever see modern ma-

chinery with air-conditioned cabins, but on these old machines you are sitting out in the dust, chaff and hot sun. “Most of these old headers will only ever sit in machinery sheds. It is rare to see them operating and it will be a once in a lifetime event to have so many together in the one crop.”

The name Hercules is synonymous with strength in classical mythology, and Hercules machinery is no different. Distributed nationally and exclusively by Brisbane Mini Excavator Sales (BMES), Hercules machinery has become a go to with farmers over the past 13 years. While it offers everything from telehandlers and graders, to skid steers, compact track loaders and excavators, Hercules’ flagship products are its wheel loader ranges. These machines are suited for a wide variety of jobs on-farm, including hay

Queensland-based Butler Grazing has purchased two Hercules wheel loaders from Brisbane Mini Excavator Sales to lend a hand in on-farm heavy lifts and general maintenance

movements and storage, clearing country, and dam building and improvements. BMES has also found the loaders to be very popular in the beef industry, and few agree more firmly than customer and farmer Michael Butler. Lift and load Butler runs his cattle grazing business Butler Grazing over two properties in southern Queensland. The business breeds wagyu cows in Teelba, not far from Glenmorgan, while a cropping farm based in Widgewa,

between Goondiwindi and Moonie, grows oats and other crops to feed the cattle. Wagyu beef is one of the most expensive meats in the world due to its marbling, meaning that streaks of fat exist within the red meat that make it tender and add extra flavour. Because of this, Butler uses the crops from his Widgewa farm to fatten the calves. Playing a key role on both properties are two Hercules H1250 wheel loaders, purchased from BMES. Weighing in at 13 tonnes, the Hercules

H1250 model is the largest in BMES’ agricultural loader offering – a key factor for Butler when purchasing. “The Hercules loaders have been helping us put cattle troughs in place, moving tanks around and stacking hay,” he says. “We also use them to load our feed mixer up for all the silage.” With one of these machines based on each property, Butler uses them for all things lifting and loading, saying he has been impressed with the machines’ four tonne lift capacity. two tonnes, and heavy ploughs off the back of trucks, Butler says. “They make it easy to lift things off the back of trucks, so we use them very regularly,” he says. “We’ve been really pleased with the loaders.” Catching the eye While Butler has always had wheel loaders, BMES and Hercules weren’t on his radar until they caught his eye at the Westech Field Days in Barcaldine. One of the biggest selling points for Butler was the price point.

“For what you’re getting, the price was very attractive,” he says. Butler originally only purchased a single H1250, but after witnessing its impressive performance firsthand, he decided to procure another unit. BMES’ aftersales service was also a key factor in purchasing the second loader, thanks to the easy communication of sales executive Steven Ragenovich. “Steven was really good to deal with,” Butler says. “Whenever we needed a small part for the loaders, Steven was able to send it out to us.”

Lifting posts is just one task made easier by Kerfab’s forks

New and improved The Hercules wheel loaders that Butler owns are just one model that forms part of the second iteration of BMES’ H-series machines, which Ragenovich says

continue to thrive in the agricultural sector. As an update on the previous H-series machines, the Series 2 models provide new design changes, including new en-

increased dump heights, better stability and extra-large cabin space. “We’re always listening to our customers and frequently improving our machines,” he says. “All the Hercules loader ranges are premium builds and have the same complete parts support we are known for.” Butler’s H1250 loaders are powered

Best of the best Several machines have been honoured at this year’s Tractor of the Year awards, with new categories allowing for an expanded honours list Six machines have received the top gong during the 2025 Tractor of the Year awards, which were announced during last month’s EIMA exhibition in Italy. An adjustment to the categories has split the ‘tractor of the year’ award into two, now honouring the year’s best high-power and mid-power tractor, while a new award celebrates the best in robotic technology. Case IH won the high-power tractor of the year award for its Quadtrac 715 model, while Fendt’s 620 Vario DP was named the mid-power tractor of the year. This was one of two awards for Fendt, with the e107 Vario also named as the sustainable tractor of the year. The utility tractor of the year was Steyr’s 4120 Plus, which was one of two awards secured for parent company CNH Industrial alongside the success of the Case IH. Antonio Carraro was another company to claim a win, with its Tony 8900 TRG named the specialised tractor of the year. AgXeed – which is part of the Claas network – won the inaugural bot category for cabless autonomous tractors and field robots at the Tractor of the Year awards for its 5.115T2 model. The wins have understandably been celebrated by the companies involved, including CNH Industrial. “It’s a great honour for our Case IH and Steyr brands to be recognised with these awards,” CNH Industrial president for Europe, Middle East and Africa Carlo Alberto Sisto says. “At CNH we are focused on bringing our customers cutting-edge products that boost their productivity and deliver greater profitability.” The Tractor of the Year awards are voted by a panel of European journalists, with the jury outlining reasons why the winning machine was chosen over other finalists. Case IH’s Quadtrac 715 was praised for its “superiority in performance, ergonomics, connectivity and environmental care, making it the most significant choice for large-scale agricultural operations.” The jury also praised the balance “between sophisticated engineering and practical functionality, particularly regarding Case IH’s focus on weight distribution and minimising soil impact.” The Quadtrac 715 has a rated power of 715 horsepower and maximum power of 778hp, making it capable of handling even the biggest jobs.

Case IH won the best high-power tractor award for its Quadtrac 715. Image: Case IH

Its consideration of ground impact – along with commitment to sustainability – were highlighted by the jury, along with its innovative design and cutting-edge features. Steyr’s “manoeuvrability, cab comfort, cutting-edge technology, and excellent engine performance” in the 4120 Plus model earned it the utility tractor awards. Powered by a 3.6L engine which delivers a maximum of 117hp, its “perfect combination of versatility and modern agricultural technology” were praised by the jury, along with the spacious and quiet cabin that provides both functionality and ease-of-use. Its technology, such as its advanced telematics, plus the brand’s dedication to innovation and “commitment to understanding the ever-changing needs of farmers” were also highlighted when giving this award. Antonio Carraro’s recognition with the Tony 8900 TRG follows an earlier Tony model winning the same specialised tractor award in 2017. This year, the jury said the “exceptional design, unparalleled versatility and superior performance of this tractor [make] it the ideal choice for specialised farming”. Its versatility was praised due to its compact width of 1.4m and turning radius of 2.3m, making it ideal for tight spaces, along with its reversible seat to ensure precision in manoeuvres. Comfort, power and agility were also highlights, as was its ability to maintain a quiet and comfortable environment inside the cabin while the 74.2hp engine is operating. “Perfectly responding to the unique challenges of specialised farming”, the jury

says its choice of the Antonio Carraro Tony 8900 TRG for this award was “clear”. Fendt’s double recognition of the 620 Vario DP winning the mid-power award and the e107 Vario winning the sustainable award was celebrated by Fendt management board chairman Christoph Gröblinghoff, who also highlighted reasons that he believes both models excel. “The Fendt 600 Vario fits perfectly into the newly created category of mid-range tractors,” he says. “Farmers around the world are impressed by its manoeuvrability, compact size and strong performance. “This series also brings technologies from the high-horsepower tractors, such as the low-speed concept and VarioDrive, into the power class up to 200hp, and thus meets the requirements of innovative businesses,” he says. “With the Fendt e107 Vario, we are also introducing the electric drive into the standard version. “This enables municipalities and farmers to significantly reduce their CO2 footprint while working efficiently and conserving resources.” The last award was for AgXeed’s 5.115T2 in the newly created category. A “combination of cutting-edge automation, practical integration with existing farming systems and overall superior field performance” earned AgXeed the inaugural honour, along with its “remarkable adaptability” and ability to integrate seamlessly with standard implements, thanks to its 8,000kg rear lift capacity and 4,000kg front lift capacity.

Right to repair laws would enable farmers to use independent machinery repairers without voiding warranties. Image: romaset/stock. adobe.com

Repair rights

A renewed emphasis on right to repair laws has been welcomed by industry bodies, which have urged the government to consider specific agricultural needs Both the National Farmers Federation and Tractor and Machinery Association have welcomed renewed federal government emphasis on the much-anticipated right to repair laws. Federal treasurer Jim Chalmers announced productivity reforms last month which would include developing a general right to repair. Assistant minister for competition Andrew Leigh also used a speech to ABARES to raise the need for a specific agricultural right to repair, saying it would be “a good thing for the economy, businesses and consumers.” In a broad sense, right to repair laws would enable Australian farmers to have repairs to their agricultural machinery made by independent repairers – rather than just the manufacturer’s single authorised dealer – without voiding their warranty. “Warranties restrict the purchaser to a single authorised dealer for servicing and repairs, and tech restrictions mean independent repairers or farmers can’t access the parts, manuals and diagnostic software they need to carry out repairs,” Leigh said during the ABARES address. “In short, farmers have few choices when buying machinery but even less choice when servicing or repairing that equipment.” Leigh referred to the findings of Australia’s Productivity Commission, which completed an inquiry into the issue and released a report in 2021. “[The Productivity Commission] agreed restrictions harm farmers through higher repair prices, reduced access and choice

and greater financial risks from repair delays,” he said. “The Productivity Commission recommended the government intervene by introducing a repair supplies obligation on agricultural machinery. “This would require manufacturers to provide access to repair information and diagnostic software tools to machinery owners and independent repairers on fair and reasonable commercial terms.” Treasurer Chalmers also used a speech to Australian Business Economists to announce a federal government-led development of a general right to repair. The NFF’s Right to Repair Taskforce – consisting of commodity councils and state farming organisations - has been pushing for policy changes to address these issues. NFF CEO Tony Mahar welcomed the treasurer’s announcement but urged the government to include agriculture specifically in the reforms. “We are encouraged by treasurer Chalmers’ comments signalling a focus on right to repair, but want to see a firm commitment this will include agricultural machinery,” he says. “What we need is greater flexibility for farmers to repair their equipment like what other countries have achieved for their farm sector. We haven’t been able to land any such arrangements so far. “Farmers across Australia know all too well the cost of equipment downtime. When machinery is out of action during harvest, it costs time and money. “We’ve been pursuing the right to repair to give farmers greater flexibility to use a

suitably qualified repairer of their choice without fear of voiding warranties and travelling long distances – or waiting excessive periods – to access supplier repairers.” The announcement was also welcomed by the Tractor and Machinery Association, with executive director Gary Northover saying farmers and members will be eagerly awaiting the benefits of these commitments. “The TMA has already been working hard to advance collective industry efforts to join our global counterparts in providing right to repair for farmers and making great inroads, with members who are already servicing the right to repair needs of farmers,” he says. “The Treasurer’s announcement provides the opportunity for industry to continue working together with federal and state governments to deliver stronger outcomes for agricultural productivity by securing right to repair for farmers that protects incomes, improves productivity and ensures safe operation of agricultural equipment.” Northover also says the availability of skilled workers to fill in-demand jobs at regional and rural dealerships was one of the biggest barriers to productivity for the sector. “It is essential that efforts to improve productivity also focus on the issue of a skilled workforce and we now look forward to working with governments, farmers and industry to achieve much-needed benefits for farmers from these new productivity reforms,” he says.

INDUSTRY NEWS WA’s total grain production is predicted to be between 17 to 18 million tonnes. Image: Stockadrik/stock.adobe.com

Harvest time

Western Australia’s grain harvest is underway with the first receivals for the season delivered Western Australia’s Geraldton, Kwinana and Esperance ports have welcomed the first grain harvest receivals of the season. It is expected that the state’s total grain production will be between 17 to 18 million tonnes – in line with WA’s yearly average. The state government sees this as a positive result, given the growing season saw very low rainfall in most growing regions. “Harvest is underway and it’s fantastic

that we’re starting with a promising outlook for the season’s results and optimism for our grain industry,” state agriculture and food minister Jackie Jarvis says. “Our growers faced some tough conditions this season but their resilience, patience and willingness to embrace innovation means our state is on track for a solid harvest.” Despite a relatively late start and a dry

September, the Geraldton Zone had a wetter than average season and is now firming to be the standout region for harvest in 2024. Parts of the region are experiencing exceptionally high yields, with expectations well above historical averages, the state government adds. The Geraldton Zone is predicted to have one of the most successful harvests the region has ever seen, potentially exceeding three million tonnes of production – up from the average of two to 2.5 million. One of the region’s largest employers, Co-operative Bulk Handling (CBH) Group, has taken on almost 300 casual employees to manage what is anticipated to be a strong year for grain production. This is in addition to its 120 permanent employees, with 80 based at the Geraldton terminal. The state government says CBH will collaborate with local freight contractors and subcontractors to transport grain to port, contributing millions to the regional economy, ensuring local industries and businesses remain integral to the supply chain.

Water bombing During the most fire-prone period of harvest, Western Australia’s grain crops are set to be safeguarded by an aerial firefighting fleet A specialised aerial firefighting fleet has been activated early to protect Western Australia’s multibillion-dollar grain crops during the most prevalent fire period of harvest. Crop fires usually start by lightning or machinery fault – including excessive heat – and as fire danger ratings begin to escalate, two aerial strike teams will be on standby to quickly respond. The two strike teams will be strategical-

ly based in the main growing regions of Geraldton and Narrogin, with each team comprising two fixed wing waterbombers, an air attack supervision aircraft and a fuel truck. Managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the aircraft can cruise at a speed of 280km/h, drop up to 3,150 litres of water, foam or retardant on a target, and require just minutes to refuel and reload.

“We know crops provide fuel for fire and in unfavourable conditions, lightning or a machinery spark can set off a crop fire,” agriculture and food minister Jackie Jarvis says, “This initiative reduces response times and increases firefighting capability, helping to protect the lives and livelihoods of WA’s hard working farmers and their communities.” Strike teams can be pre-deployed to other airbases in response to the latest intelligence reports. Waterbombers will also move south as the harvest stretches into December, protecting busy farming communities near Esperance. This is now the fourth year of the Grain Harvest Aerial Fleet program, which saw the strike teams complete 216 drops across 33 incidents during the 2023-24 harvest. In this period, 680,400 litres were dropped on firegrounds from Geraldton to Esperance.

Seaweed solution Using whole Asparagopsis seaweed in cattle feed has been found to be more effective in reducing methane equivalent dose of bromoform. The report suggests that while bromoemissions than using its primary form is the primary active compound in compound on its own A new study published in Animal Feed Science and Technology has found that using whole asparagopsis in cattle feed is more effective for reducing methane emissions than using bromoform on its own – the seaweed’s primary active compound. This conclusion was reached after comparing the methane reduction potential of whole Asparagopsis armata seaweed and pure bromoform when used as feed additives for cattle. Results from the peer-reviewed study show that whole dried seaweed reduced methane emissions by 95.6 per cent when included as 0.5 per cent of the diet, compared to a 59.6 per cent reduction from an

Asparagopsis responsible for methane reduction, other bioactive compounds in the seaweed play a significant role – accounting for approximately 40 per cent of the total reduction effect. This study provides validation for CH4 Global, a company that is commercially producing and distributing an Asparagopsis-based feed additive for cattle farmers. CH4’s flagship product, Methane Tamer, uses whole dried Asparagopsis seaweed as opposed to bromoform on its own. CEO Steve Meller says the new study highlights the importance of the company’s approach, particularly as beef and dairy producers consider different

options to reduce their carbon footprints, including using bromoform on its own or synthetic chemicals. “Not only do these results validate the performance advantage of whole natural Asparagopsis over synthetic compounds, but they also underscore the cost-effectiveness of our solution,” he says. “Using whole Asparagopsis allows us to achieve superior methane reduction with a lower dose, making Methane Tamer an economically viable option for farmers.” CH4 adds that methane is a potent greenhouse gas with more than 80 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. Livestock farming, particularly cattle and sheep production, is responsible for at least 30 per cent of human-driven methane emissions globally, CH4 says.

procedures, which is crucial to protection of the nation’s plant health. PHA’s course is compatible with smartphones and tablets, allowing users to learn on the go. “Growers are at the forefront of identifying and responding to plant pests in Australia,” PHA CEO Sarah Corcoran says. “Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for those on the frontlines of plant health to get the information they need, when they need it,” PHA response national manager Rachel Mann says. The user-friendly design is a key feature of the online course, providing simplified navigation, enhanced images and interactive graphics. By having a mix of written, video and interactive graphics, the course caters to various learning styles. It also provides practical steps for reporting pests, information on the benefits of biosecurity and joint responses from government and industry. Essential topics covered in the course include the potential impact of pests and diseases on Australia’s agricultural industry, how to protect crops and the steps for reporting unusual symptoms or pests. By providing growers with this knowledge, PHA says the course will increase early detection and reporting – significantly increasing the chances of effective control and eradication of plant pests.

The plant-based protein market is forecast to surpass $250 billion globally by 2035. Image: lesichkadesign/stock. adobe.com

Finger on the pulse A new Victorian research program will help pulse producers develop varieties with traits that are driven by the market Victoria’s pulse production is set to be boosted by new research that will help solidify Australia as an industry leader and meet growing global demand for plant proteins. The state government has invested $2.4 million towards a new research project at its Horsham Smart Farm with the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

“This research will help Australian farmers to better meet market needs, strengthening export opportunities and increasing jobs along the supply chain,” agriculture minister Ros Spence says. “It will put Victorian producers at the forefront of the growing plant-based protein market.” GRDC invested $8.8 million on behalf of Aussie grain growers and $2.4 million from

industry collaborators in the project. The four-year national project will help pulse producers develop varieties with traits that are driven by the market – supporting farmers to cater for specific demand and ensure consumers are getting the product they want. It will involve all parts of the pulse supply chain, including 13 subcontractors, food and ingredient manufacturers and processors, as well as an international partner. Demands for the plant-based protein market are forecast to surpass $250 billion globally by 2035, with Australia currently placed as the second largest pulse exporter in the world. Australia exports an average of 2.5 million tonnes of pulses a year, and more than 90 per cent of pulses have their prices defined by visual quality. They are used primarily for human consumption with a small proportion sold into the lower value, domestic livestock feed market.

rotations to optimise long-term yields and returns for growers in the state’s south. The state government is contributing $6.8 million to the project, that will be delivered by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) in collaboration with the Grains Research

and Development Corporation (GRDC). “By working together on solutions to local issues, we are helping WA grain growers to build better businesses and remain internationally competitive,” agriculture and food minister Jackie Jarvis says. “Our long-term partnership with the GRDC continues to deliver benefits to WA’s grains industry.” DPIRD and GRDC will work closely with the South East Premium Wheat Growers Association and Stirlings to Coast Farmers grower groups throughout the project. Research will examine a diverse combination of crop rotations and modelling to overcome disease, with a particular focus on legumes, alongside wheat, barley, oats and canola. WA’s high rainfall zone, located between Albany and Esperance, accounts for a major proportion of the state’s grain production, with 53 per cent of canola, 40 per cent of oats and 29 per cent of wheat produced in WA coming from the region.

Carbon farming Victorian farmers can participate in free training sessions that will provide information on reducing their emissions The Victorian government has announced the start of the Carbon Farming Outreach Program, which will deliver free training opportunities to farmers wanting to reduce their emissions and improve on-farm productivity. $4.37 million has been invested into the program, which is set to deliver over 130 training events in Victoria over the next two years. “This program is giving farmers across the country opportunities to build skills

and knowledge to reduce emissions and store carbon, helping the agriculture sector to play its part in Australia’s transition to net zero,” federal minister for agriculture, fisheries and forestry Julie Collins says. “Victorian farmers can look forward to relevant, engaging and useful training sessions across the state, so they can understand how carbon farming can work for them in the future.” The Carbon Farming Outreach Program will be delivered by Agriculture Victoria,

Victoria’s Catchment Management Authorities, Melbourne Water and Landcare Victoria. In addition to the program, the state government will provide grants to landowners in the North Central CMA region, as part of the Victorian Carbon Farming Program (VCFP), to support tree planting on private land. This program is supporting farmers across the region to diversify income streams and gain a range of benefits associated with growing trees, including shade and shelter, erosion control and timber production. As part of the state government’s target of net zero by 2045, $20 million has been invested to support farmers in efforts to reduce their emissions. Farm-related deaths and injuries reported this year have already exceeded those from 2023, according to AgriFutures Australia. Image: Aboutmomentsimages/stock.adobe.com

Safety first A new on-farm safety platform will provide measures to prevent injury and report information at regional, state and national levels The Rural Safety and Health Alliance has launched Ag Safety Data Net, a platform it says will provide meaningful metrics for farm safety planning. As the agricultural sector aims for zero on-farm fatalities, the ASDN project will develop and implement an ongoing data system that aims to reinforce a collective responsibility for on-farm safety. In an industry-first, it will also report farm-injury information at regional, state and national levels – while ensuring the privacy and confidentiality of information. The project is being funded by the Cotton Research and Development Corpora-

tion, Grains Research and Development Corporation, Australian Wool Innovation, Australian Pork Limited, and AgriFutures Australia. Chair of Farmsafe Australia, Felicity Richards, highlighted the urgency of addressing the rate of farm injuries, particularly as harvest and hay/silage seasons approach. “We are seeing up to 40 fatalities and an increase in serious injuries on Australian farms each year,” Richards says. “Despite this, there is no single source of truth for all key injury measures. Therefore, by centralising this information, ASDN will make it easier to highlight issues and

trends more easily.” ASDN will also provide measures that aim to prevent injury through practical actions that farmers can take. AgriFutures Australia says farm-related deaths and injuries reported this year have already exceeded those from 2023. “Machinery dominates farm incidents, especially during harvest and peak periods such as hay/silage production,” Richards says. “We urge farmers to take regular breaks to combat fatigue during long workdays.” AgriFutures Australia Senior Manager, Rural Futures, Ulicia Raufers says with limited technical capacity for farm-specific analysis, most reports only offer high-level descriptions of fatalities, with fewer than half of on-farm injuries recorded. “Quality information is crucial for understanding the issues and taking appropriate action,” Raufers says.” “By using ASDN, the agriculture sector can significantly improve safety outcomes and reduce fatalities, a goal that we all desperately want to see become a reality.” The ASDN project is co-ordinated by AgHealth Australia and will run through until June 2027.

Project-lead Susan Robertson will test novel feed supplements that are known to help animals cope with heat stress. Image: Charles Sturt University

Charles Sturt University researchers have received $2 million to develop strategies for sheep producers to combat climate change A $2.2 million grant has been awarded to a Charles Sturt University-led research team to enhance the production, profit and resilience of sheep-based agriculture. Senior researcher Susan Robertson will lead the project with the Charles Sturt Gulbali Institute for Agriculture, Water and Environment, aiming to make sheep meat and wool production systems more resilient against the impacts of climate change. “This is already having an impact on the sheep industry, all while reducing methane emissions, avoiding soil erosion and degradation of pastures,” Robertson says. “The project will assist in meeting goals

for environmental sustainability while improving sheep production and profitability, so it will be a win-win for the industry and the environment.” Novel feed supplements will be tested, which Robertson says are known to help animals cope with heat stress, improve production and reduce the intensity of methane emissions. “Heat stress already reduces the number of lambs weaned per ewe and will become a larger issue as the number of hot days increase, so strategies to minimise heat stress are expected to have large benefits,” she says.

In addition to climate impacts, the project will investigate strategies to improve performance of confinement feeding. “Confinement feeding is a key method to protect soils and pastures from over-grazing, but lambing in confinement is a practice most producers avoid,” Robertson says. “We need to work out what might work for Australian producers, because droughts are inevitable.” Supported by the Australian government and funded over the next three and a half years, Robertson says the project will see industry and research collaborate to achieve the best outcomes. “The Charles Sturt research team has partnered with Green Blue Health and Four Seasons Company who will provide novel feed supplements, and also JM Livestock and MerinoLink to engage sheep producers,” she says. “This co-design will help combine the project findings and information to then assist farmers’ decisions on profitable, sustainable practices. “This assistance will be delivered through extension events facilitated by MerinoLink across six locations through NSW and Victoria, as well as through online national events.”

The Narrabri to Turrawan Line Upgrade will allow heavier loads of freight. Image: Alistair/stock.adobe.com

Smooth travels A rail upgrade completed in northern New South Wales will ensure grain trains can carry more in a single trip An upgrade to 35 kilometres of tracks on the Narrabri to Turrawan Line in northwest New South Wales has come just before what is anticipated to be one of the largest grain harvests in some time for farmers in the region.

The upgrade of tracks between the Hunter Valley and Narrabri North is expected to improve freight efficiency and connectivity in both the region and ultimately to ports in Newcastle and Sydney. Heavier train loads will now be sup-

ported, allowing each train to carry more freight, up to 25 tonnes per axle, and to travel at speeds of up to 80km/h along the corridor. “These improvements not only strengthen the rail network but also boost economic growth by facilitating the transport of grain and other freight,” infrastructure, transport, regional development and local government minister Catherine King says. “This means more grain and goods can be transported in a single trip, providing a smoother connection and reducing transportation costs.” The 35km project involved the replacement of outdated steel and timber sleepers with heavy-duty concrete sleepers, upgrading existing rail and associated civil works.

Narrow tractors continue to be one of Antonio Carraro’s fortes

Big picture

Introducing its A Series tractors to Australia has allowed Antonio Carraro to widen its appeal while remaining true to its roots, the manufacturer says Italian tractor manufacturer Antonio Carraro has added to its range a series designed to suit general purpose farming, in addition to the vineyards and orchardists that it typically caters to. Described by the manufacturer as being “back to the roots, but looking towards the future”, the A Series formed part of what Antonio Carraro showcased at the EIMA event in its native Italy earlier this year. By introducing this series, Antonio Carraro says it is catering to a different

demographic of farmers. One feature for which many of its tractors are known is their oscillated chassis, which makes the tractors well suited to hilly or sloped environments. The A Series has removed this, being built more like a conventional tractor, and is designed to suit farmers in flatter environments. “The introduction of the new A Series has made it possible for Antonio Carraro to extend its product range by catering also

to the needs of farmers who operate in specialist farming environments that are flatter – but who need vehicles with special qualities and that are able to move around in confined spaces,” the manufacturer says. “The A Series consists of no fewer than six models that can be configured in 48 different basic set-ups.” While the A Series does not feature the oscillating chassis, reversible driving or same size wheels that often act as Antonio

Carraro’s point of difference – there are several areas in which the manufacturer says the new range stands out compared to other ‘conventional’ tractors. “These tractors act as a bridge from our traditional models to the standard tractors of our competitors,” Antonio Carraro Australia national sales manager Marco Corra says. “The A Series is available up to a maximum horsepower of 100hp and is still more compact than the usual standard tractors. “One of the perks of this new series is the hydraulic capabilities. “It has 60 litres per minute of constant flow, in comparison to the 50 litres per minute on our very compact AC range. “The target market for the A Series is orchardists, vineyards and general farmers.” Antonio Carraro’s A Series might be designed as a general purpose tractor, but delving deeper shows the range of capabilities it has. This is without even factoring in the 48 basic set-ups to which the manufacturer refers, providing further evidence it will appeal to a wide selection of Australian farmers – with each model available with a variety of customisation options. The A Series also includes both cabin and ROPS tractors. Antonio Carraro’s AV-N and AV-L are both cabin-only models, which keep the “characteristic tunnel configuration” and which offer the stability, visibility and handling expected from tractors with a low centre of gravity. Designed to move easily between narrow rows, an extensive range of 24-inch

Some A Series models are also available with a full cabin

(61cm) and 28-inch (71cm) tyre configurations with adjustable rims are available. The hydraulic system offers two or three-pump configuration and makes these units ideal for use with demanding implements. The AF-N and AF-L models are also designed for orchard work but also suit light utility work in open fields – and are described by the manufacturer as being highly configurable. Variations are available with a cabin or front tiltable rollbar, along with 24-inch Antonio Carraro’s new A Series tractor

(61cm) and 28-inch (71cm) wheels. This means customers working under low-hanging branches that require a more compact machine can select that option, while other farmers working between rows or out in the open field are also catered for. Larger, anti-compaction tyres also make these models suitable for walnut farmers, the manufacturer adds, with two different wheel configurations specifically designed for this industry. The major difference between the AF-N and AF-L tractors is that the latter has a specific axle and three-point hitch typical of light utility tractors, which provides a greater load capacity and also offers excellent stability on sloping terrain, thanks to its wider axle and lower centre of gravity. The AF-B has been created as a specific model with its own characteristics, rather than being designed from the AF-N. The B in its model name signifies low (basso in Italian), while the AV-LB is another model that offers the same low profile but is otherwise similar to the aforementioned AV-L. Working with crops that require a low driving position such as vineyards, fruit orchards, kiwi crops, greenhouse and hazelnut groves, these tractors have been specifically designed to provide high performance while remaining low to the ground. Adjustable-height mudguards, along with a focus on the driver’s position, visi-

bility, side guard cleaning and protective guards have all been factored into the design. Completing the lineup is the AS range, which is available as the AS-N model, specifically designed to work in vineyards with row widths starting at 1.5m, plus the AS-LB model which suits canopied cultivation or tasks under foliage. With a 1.8m wheelbase and width starting from just 1m, the tractor also has a low bonnet height of just 1.27m and excellent manoeuvrability and steering capacity. It is designed as a general purpose tractor

The front-end loader is the most popular tractor attachment for tractors up to 150hp – and for good reason. It offers great versatility and utility for general purpose tractors around a farm, contracting or public works, assisting with a wide range of materials handling and maintenance tasks. As farmers rely more on the loader to undertake these tasks, the ergonomics of the loader operation become a major factor in the efficiency of that work and the level of fatigue and errors experienced. A high level of loader integration with the tractor is the key to improving ergonomics. The new Landini Powerfarm II 120 tractor makes this leap, with superb loader

30

integration directly from the factory. First, it starts with the loader. “Three years ago, the Morra family behind Landini tractors acquired the largest Italian loader manufacturer, Sigma4,” Gary Surman, sales and marketing manager at distributor Inlon, says. “They made Sigma4 the OEM supplier of loaders to Landini. “With this direct connection to the factory, the Powerfarm II 120 loader is now fitted during the tractor assembly process, ensuring it is fitted as the original engineers intended. “The integration in the cabin is obvious in the easy-to-reach location and layout on the right-hand side of the driver.

“But it is the extra controls on the loader joystick that lift that integration to the next level.” The Landini Powerfarm II 120 Cabin model is powered by a 4.4L Perkins Tier 3 diesel engine that offers 110 horsepower (82kw). Its transmission has a hydraulic Power Shuttle main clutch, 36 forward and 12 reverse gears incorporating a HML 3-speed Power Shift, and a top speed of 40km/h. When manoeuvring the loader, the forward-reverse shuttle control on the steering column is essential, but the Powerfarm II also incorporates HML transmission speed shifting with a press of the thumb on the loader joystick.

Key loader controls are made easy through the joystick

Hydraulic third function is operated with the trigger button on the front of the joystick, with optional hydraulic fourth function and hydraulic implement latch and un-latch also available. For efficient and tireless operation, all the key loader and tractor driving controls are within finger reach of the steering wheel and loader joystick. Visibility is another essential when stacking bales. The Landini Powerfarm II series has the latest slimline rounded cabin bulkhead, providing the operator with superb visibility when placing bales high in the shed. The Landini Powerfarm II 120RPS 4WD Cab comes with an integrated level lift loader with quick detach, Euro hitch, soft ride, third function, independent loader valve and joystick plus a 2,000mm four-inone bucket. Loader integration makes it ideal for a variety of jobs

Backed by history Manufacturer Landini and Australian distributor Inlon both celebrated milestones in 2024. Landini celebrated its 140th anniversary as a machinery manufacturer. It was 1884 when Giovanni Landini founded Officine Landini, a wine-making machinery factory in Fabbrico, Italy. The first tractor went into production in 1925. At almost the same time, Australian family business Inlon Pty Ltd also recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Established in 1984 by Joe and Lolita Jardim, Inlon first imported, assembled and distributed Universal Farmliner tractors from Romania. Forty years later, Inlon is a major importer and distributor of 15 brands of farm machinery from South Korea, India and Japan and across Europe – including Landini. The E Series spreaders

Spread the word The passion that Jim Ryan has for JBS manure spreaders is infectious. Where some distributors might adopt a cautious approach to introducing a new product to Australia, slowly testing it in the market, Ryan knows he has a quality machine to sell and is keen for local farmers to see it for themselves. Ryan is the product and sales specialist for Parkes-based Atlas Ag, which is the Australian partner for JBS manure spreaders. Atlas Ag, which is also the distribution business of eastern states dealership group AEH Group, first introduced the spreaders to the Australian market about a year ago. Ryan says the product evolution overseas has him excited about the impact they can have on the Australian market. “It is probably one of the best designed spreaders on the market,” he says. Available in both tandem and tridem axle models with capacities ranging from 11 to 58 tonnes, JBS manure spreaders offer flexibility and adaptability to suit a

variety of farming operations. Broadly speaking, the JBS range begins with the M-Series, which is a compact unit designed for smaller operators, right up to the wide body units which reach the 58 tonne mark and which suit large-scale broadacre farmers, along with contractors.

There is also the mid-sized E-Series, which is one model within this range that Ryan expects to be a “game changer” for both farmers and contractors. Part of the E-Series, the newly released wide body 3048 spreader has a 30 tonne capacity, a considerable upgrade on its

“little brother” which holds 22 tonnes, and which Ryan describes as a “no brainer” upgrade. “Everyone is chasing big volume, and this one is still the same size machine - just a bit longer at 30 foot long, rather than 22 foot long - but which carts more, which is what the contractors want,” he says. “That seems to be the golden figure and is designed for that market. “This has only just been released in Canada and there’s a couple coming for Western Australia and then we’ve got some coming for the east coast.” Offering a range of sizes means farmers and contractors can find something perfectly suited to their needs, but this is not the only reason that Ryan is such a passionate advocate for JBS spreaders. One impressive feature they offer is interchangeable beaters. Designed to handle a wide range of materials, from heavy manure through to lime, this flexibility allows farmers to efficiently spread different types of materials based on their specific needs.

This ties in well with the versatility of the spreader and its ability to be adjusted into several configurations, effectively giving users multiple machines in one. “We can take the back off and use it for a gravel trailer, we can put a set of hungry boards on and make it a forage trailer,” Ryan says. “The big thing is the interchangeable beaters to transfer it to a forage wagon. We just take the back off, lift it up and tip into your pit and it just feeds out the back on your chain. “It’s just the versatility of them - there’s nothing else out there like these.” These interchangeable JBS beaters are available as a Vertimax attachment, or the optional Hurricane attachment. The Hurricane offers two horizontal beaters in narrow body setups and three horizontal beaters on the wide body units. On the Hurricane, the rear gate is adjustable, which JBS says allows for a more consistent spread, even in windy environments. Driven by gearboxes, which help to

reduce overall maintenance, the Hurricane attachment can spread as little as two tonnes per acre. The Hurricane is ideally suited to lighter and low-moisture materials, while Ryan says a combination means farmers are covered for all options. “If it’s light material, you go with your Hurricane. If it’s big, heavy material, then you go with your vertical beaters,” he says. “Hurricane probably gets a more of your pig and chicken manures, and really fine

JBS’ M Series is the smallest

cow manure, but your vertical beaters will get you out of trouble if there’s a bit of rock or rubbish as it can get rid of it.” Another area in which JBS spreaders excel is through their robust construction – with quality, reliability and versatility being the three words which Ryan uses when summing up the spreaders. “We’ve got machines that are five or six years old over in the United States just running around getting absolutely hammered,” he says.

“We don’t have any floors rot out and you can just clean them up and they look like new.” While Ryan jokes their long-lasting nature might be “terrible for repeat business”, he has no doubt that farmers and contractors will want to keep adding to their fleets once they have used them. “Once our contractors start getting the taste of them, I can guarantee they won’t stop,” he says. “We’re not the cheapest, but we’re the

best. If people are paying good money, they want good gear. “That’s what Atlas Ag offers all across our range and I’m passionate about them.” JBS spreaders are sold through Atlas Ag and are available at all 14 AEH Group branches across the eastern states. Victorian farmer Chris Irvine can run three headers from the one Balzer chaser bin

Big benefits While the exact motivation behind every farmer’s machinery purchase is different, the overarching theme of trying to improve on what they already have is a constant. Investing in something considerably bigger, to the point of thinking it could be “overkill”, is a significant leap – but for Victorian farmer Chris Irvine the decision to purchase a 60 tonne Balzer chaser bin has been everything he hoped for and more. So much so that when asked if he would go back to the 30 tonne tandem bin setup

he used previously, his answer was simple but emphatic: “No.” Irvine, who farms wheat and canola near Yarrawonga in Victoria’s north, chose the second largest chaser bin available through Balzer’s Australian distributor and importer MJM Equipment. “I firstly thought it was going to be an overkill, but I needed something that could keep up with three headers and thought this was the way to go,” Irvine says. “We definitely needed something to go bigger, with more capacity, unloading

speed and the scales. “The speed when loading trucks is second to none and this helps us get back to the header before they are full. “I don’t think there’s another bin on the market that can do that, hence why we went this way, and it has definitely lived up to expectations.” Maximising productive use of time at harvest is the aim of the game, with time spent moving grain around or waiting for processes to occur being considered time wasted.

Chris Irvine first thought a 60 tonne Balzer chaser bin would be too big for his needs, but the Victorian farmer now says there is no way he would go back to anything else

37

Irvine with his 60 tonne Balzer chaser bin

The 60 tonne Balzer chaser bin has achieved this aim for Irvine, with its additional capacity helping to eliminate field bins in his farming setup and therefore streamline the entire process. “The first thing we did was get rid of field bins because we were double handling grain,” he says. “That was one huge efficiency gain, because as soon as you’re double handing grain it slows you down, so now it can go straight into the truck and we get back to the header. “Getting rid of two chaser bins also reduces engine hours on another tractor, plus labour with another steering wheel attendant. “You’ve got one tractor and one big bin and it just comes with you - we’ve had a lot of efficiency gains there.” These benefits are based on the size of Balzer’s chaser bins, which are collectively known as the Field Floater 7 range, with Irvine’s 60 tonne tri-axle unit offering a 78,000L tank capacity. Even the smallest of Balzer’s units – the 42 tonne tandem axle – still provides farmers with a 55,000L tank. The largest option – the 78 tonne tri-axle

38

Farms & Farm Machinery

– provides a whopping 100,000L capacity tank. Many of the physical dimensions are standard across Balzer’s range, such as an overall length of 11.02 metres, plus bin length of 8.4m and 3m wheel centres for CTF. With these dimensions, farmers can fit these large chaser bins on a standard drop deck widener float for transport. Balzer’s 78 tonne chaser bin could be on the cards for Irvine’s operation as he mentioned there is ‘’no saying you wouldn’t go bigger in the future’’. The 78 tonne bin is becoming popular with farmers running 60-foot header fronts, which makes unloading on the run easier with the wider chaser bin. Machine size is an important factor for a broadacre farmer at harvest time, but Balzer’s chaser bins are far from merely being big units with little else to differentiate them. Each model includes a 61cm (24-inch) diameter unloading auger system as standard, which is complete with Balzer’s patented hydraulic engagement clutch system for the horizontal auger. An unload speed of 30 tonnes per

minute can be achieved with these auger dimensions. While this unload speed might scare a few people off, it can easily be adjusted right back to a trickle with the gate controls on the joystick. The unloading auger spout adjusts in every direction, with Balzer setting out to offer exceptional precision. Balzer chaser bins are also equipped with independent running gear and a distinct axle arrangement which utilises the manufacturer’s patented Auto-Trail steerable axle system. The load sharing hydraulic suspension distributes the load evenly across all axles. This leads to heavy loads feeling effortless, Balzer says, while providing superior manoeuvrability and reducing ground compaction. This endorsement was backed up by Irvine, who praised his chaser bin’s performance in conditions which he described as “not super wet” but still damp under foot. “With the tri-axle, it floated exceptionally well - better than expected,” he says. “I thought it would be too big in the wet but that’s not the case at all. It floated better than our dual axle chaser bin.”

The tri-axle system was also praised by Irvine for its usability. “The three axles are great - if you’ve got to back up, just lock them straight and they’re very easy to use,” he says. “It’s got a reverse camera on the back so it’s not an issue at all.” This reverse camera is part of Balzer’s three-way camera kit, which is offered as an optional feature. Another optional feature is the Agrimatics Libra Cart, which automatically detects and records how much grain has been unloaded. Every paired mobile device within range can view live weights, enabling the yield monitor to be calibrated from inside the combine harvester cabin. This data can also be shared through email and the cloud, allowing tracking of important information from anywhere. This pairs well with the chaser bin’s electronic scale system, which is offered as standard and is described by Balzer as being “cutting-edge”. It ensures precise data management and instant yield reporting, and its accuracy when dealing with large loads helps to

provide certainty for farmers loading their grain into trucks. “Across a full load, the scales are probably within 100 kilograms,” Irvine says. “They’re very accurate and I’m really happy with them, and being paired with the Libra Cart is great for record keeping as well.” Other standard features on Balzer chaser bins include an internal access door, horizontal sweep auger clutch, plus hydraulic suspension which helps to distribute the ground pressure proportionately. All features are controlled from a central location using the joystick control. The ultimate test of a machine is how it performs in real-world conditions. It has certainly passed this test for Irvine, with the ability to efficiently load and unload bags being another advantage. “It’s great for unloading bags and so is the unload speed – we just haven’t found another bin like it,” he says. “Having a full road train of grain on hand ready for a truck when it turns up means it’s a single man job - just go and load the truck, then go about your day after that.

“We have loaded into bags too and it worked well.” Balzer chaser bins are distributed nationally by MJM Equipment – a dealer located in the northern Victorian town of Yarrawonga. The service Irvine has received from MJM has been consistently good, he says, and he encourages anyone considering the Balzer chaser bin to get out there and test one. “MJM Equipment has been great with their service, they always answer their phone which is all you can ask for,” Irvine says. “If you’re thinking about a bigger chaser bin to keep up with more headers and just increase efficiency, I’d definitely give these guys a call, because their service is great and the bin is exceptional. “Go and sit on a tractor with someone who’s got one for an hour and you’ll walk away and probably buy one in all honesty.” Balzer chaser bins are distributed nationally by MJM Equipment, with the full product range online at www.mjmequipment.com

Making Hay

New Holland’s BigBaler 1290 High Density. Image: New Holland

Dealership group Intersales is taking the opportunity to grow its New Holland presence while giving both staff and customers the chance to see its balers in action Opportunity can sometimes present itself in unlikely ways. While the phrase ‘make hay while the sun shines’ is usually metaphorical, it was a request for dealership group Intersales to literally do so which has created the chance to upskill some additional members of its team. Intersales sells Case IH machinery across its four branches in the New South Wales centres of Temora, Griffith and Wagga Wagga along with the Victorian border town of Wodonga. It also expanded earlier this year into New Holland machinery at its Wagga and Wodonga branches following its acquisition of dealership group Cadmac

Machinery. Both machinery brands are involved with Riverina TAFE (Primary Skills Centre), the students of which have access to both machinery sheds and farmland. It was after approaching Intersales regarding getting some hay bales made that the dealership saw an opportunity. “They wanted some hay made for their own livestock, so we’re going to take the opportunity to use it as an in-house training session for our sales guys, technicians and parts guys for more of a hands-on demo,” Intersales Wagga branch sales manager Paul Bailes says. “We’ve got good technicians that know how to fix things, but on the flipside they

don’t get a chance to actually do the driving and see what happens when the machines are working.” This will be followed by a series of on-farm CNH baler demonstrations for new and existing customers, allocated by expressions of interest. This year’s Cadmac acquisition means this will be the first hay season where New Holland machinery can be demonstrated under the Intersales name. Bailes, who was previously with Cadmac but moved prior to the acquisition, says the Cadmac team had run demos of New Holland balers last year, and says he is excited to do so again for Intersales this time around.

“It is important because a lot of customers that are going to spend that money on a baler want to see it working before they do so,” he says. “In some ways it’s probably a bit of a new thing for Intersales group. “They’ve always done bits and pieces, but obviously taking on the New Holland name has only happened recently, and New Holland has always had a very good name in hay gear.” The primary machine which Intersales will be using for the in-house demonstrations is the New Holland BigBaler 1290 High Density, complemented by the RB150 Superfeed Round Baler for variety. The BigBaler 1290 High Density has been part of New Holland’s offering for about five years but remains a standout due to the efficiency gains it promises and technology packed inside it. When it was launched, New Holland said it offered up to 22 per cent higher density than conventional models. “The beauty of the HD is it’s a totally new baler for New Holland and CNH,” Bailes says. “It’s not just a change of model, it’s a total redesign for the high density market, which is becoming a bigger space as a lot more

The in-house training allowed Intersales staff to test the machinery. Image: Intersales

people are looking for high density balers. “From a customer’s point of view and from the feedback I get, a lot of customers are looking at these because CNH seem to be the only company in recent times that has released a totally new product in that space. “Everyone’s always updating, but this is not just a revamp and an upgrade of the model – it’s a totally different baler.” The BigBaler range has developed since its launch, with IntelliSense added as an option earlier this year.

IntelliSense is a bale automation system which proactively automates tractor steering according to the swath path, along with speed adjustment with regard to swath volume. It contains a LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensor at the front of the tractor cabin roof, which emits a laser pulse several metres ahead. New Holland says this technology will increase bale quality, fuel efficiency, operator comfort and overall productivity. “These are some pretty big advancements in terms of automation,” Bailes says. “It’s not just another baler and hook it to any tractor. This is offering a package that will give you efficiency to get the job done.” It can be connected to New Holland’s FieldOps system, which allows owners to stay in touch with the machine at all times by monitoring real-time information remotely. The BigBaler 1290 High Density also has a 4.05 metre bale chamber, while its plunger force of 62 tonnes allows it to reach more than non-high density models. It also has a 2.35m Maxi-Sweep pick-up, which helps feed in the crop at higher rates, plus a SmartShift gearbox. This driveline has a two-speed powershift start-up process which automatically shifts from first to second gear when the baler is engaged at a tractor PTO speed of 850rpm, before accelerating to

As a CNH dealer, Intersales offers Case IH and New Holland machinery. Image: Intersales

a maximum flywheel speed of 1440rpm at full tractor PTO speed. This smoother starting process helps to protect both the tractor and baler drivelines while delivering significantly more torque, the manufacturer says. Hydraulic axles and suspension ensure perfect weight distribution across all four wheels, while 1.4m diameter tyres help to reduce soil compaction. Only choice Sticking with Kerfab attachments is a simple decision for South Australian farmer and contractor Grant Clough Any time a farmer says the phrase “I wouldn’t use anything else”, it is clear the equipment they are talking about is worth considering. For a contractor, whose equipment is often more specialised and who needs to consistently perform the same task to the same standard, getting something efficient and reliable is arguably even more important. It is for this reason that Grant Clough’s opinion of Kerfab products should carry such weight. Clough is from Carlton Park Industries in the South Australian town of Millicent and has spent the last 15 years working as a hay contractor. He owns and uses Kerfab bale forks, which are fitted to a John Deere tractor and a JCB backhoe loader, and a quick hitch that is used on the backhoe. Using the forks predominantly for shifting hay around the farm and for loading trucks, Clough’s priority is for a

reliable attachment which enables him to safely lift and move multiple square bales simultaneously. Having used and rejected other brands of attachments previously, Clough moved to Kerfab products and has not looked back since – with no intention of ever looking elsewhere. “Before the Kerfab came along, we had some pretty ordinary attachments that only just did the job - they kept breaking,” he says. “I’ve been using Kerfab products for probably 15 years on telehandlers, loaders, you name it, and it’s just my go-to attachment. “The things I like most about them are just their strength and quality. “Everything fits like it should and you never have any problems of putting the attachments on and off. “It’s just fits, it just works, and I wouldn’t use anything else.” Kerfab remains a thriving example

Grant Clough has Kerfab attachments on two of his machines

of Australian manufacturing, with the attachments manufacturer celebrating 30 years in business last year. Based in the northern Victorian town of Kerang, Kerfab also recently opened a second factory alongside its original site to expand its manufacturing capacity. Much of this extra capacity is dedicated to products involved in Kerfab’s Attach + Go range – of which the bale forks are a part. This promise is to have an official quote to customers within two hours, free delivery across Australia, and the attachments dispatched from its facility within seven working days of order confirmation. This ability to get products quickly to customers without the manufacturing or shipping delays that can impact overseas purchases is a huge point of difference for Kerfab. Even products which are not part of the Attach + Go range, and therefore have longer lead times, still provide an example

of the company’s impressive service. For Clough, the experience of getting the quick hitch for his JCB backhoe was a positive one in every sense. “That was bought through JCB and when I purchased the backhoe I said to them I wanted a quick hitch, hay forks, bucket and a few other attachments and it was all organised from there,” he says. “Kerfab designed a quick hitch, got it fitted, and back here within a few months. It was really, really fast. “When we got it all fitted up, they were more than helpful to get it moving and make sure it was down here and working straight away. “Dealing with Kerfab was unbelievable - they were just straight onto the design, straight onto the manufacturing and then straight onto getting it fitted to the machines. “Everything just fits and it works. They know what they’re doing and they’ve been doing it for a long time.” Kerfab designs specific bale forks for tractors, telehandlers and loaders – ensuring farmers can get access to a perfectly suited product regardless of their machinery type.

Available in three, four or five tine configurations, the bale forks are built to be adjustable while featuring the durability and strength needed to handle Australian conditions. This ties in with the “strength and quality” which were cited by Clough as his standout features on the bale forks. The quick hitch that Clough owns is described by Kerfab as a “versatile attachment that is designed to turn an ag loader into a multipurpose tool capable of handling almost any task on a farm”. Many specifications and weight ratings are available, providing further versatility for customers to get exactly what they need, while it successfully achieves the ultimate purpose of saving time and money by quickly and easily fitting a variety of attachments to the loader. Kerfab’s range is varied, but 30 years of manufacturing means they know what customers want and have the ability to make it for local conditions. For customers such as Clough, it makes the choice of where to get his future attachments a simple one. “We’ve tried others, and they just didn’t work – and now without a question, I’d just

South Australian contractor and farmer Grant Clough

go straight to a Kerfab,” he says. “It’s their strength and quality - you just don’t break them. “If I was recommending the Kerfab attachments, I’d just go on my experience that I’ve had loading trucks with hay for 15 years. “Ergonomically, they just work, and you realise that after doing it for 15 years, it just feels right, and it just works. “Kerfab makes good quality equipment and they have done for years. I don’t see that changing,” he says.

Mix ‘n’ Match As all farmers will appreciate, Australia is known for experiencing some of the most varied weather conditions of any nation across the globe. This places heavy pressure on livestock farmers when it comes to feeding stock. Whether they are dairy farming, dry stock or feed-lotting, extreme seasonal changes can cause farmers to find themselves low on natural environment animal foodstuffs, such as grass, despite careful planning. With correct feed selection being such an important factor when feeding

48

livestock, these shortages can become a problem for farmers, as they will have to resort to alternative feeds. Handy tools that can be used to alleviate this problem are the Bernard van Lengerich (BvL) mixer wagons, offered by Michael’s Group. These mixer wagons can blend a variety of feed types together, producing a nutritious feed for livestock. By bringing a BvL mixer wagon into a feeding operation, farmers can bring in specific feed items, store them on their

property and then mix them together with other feed sources. This reduces the chance of running low on natural environment feeds, because it can be stored and used for later. One happy beneficiary of the BvL mixer wagon is North Victorian dairy farmer Merv Koch and his wife Bonita, who have praised the machine for the way it has helped them deal with seasonal change. Seasonal solution After originally dairy farming in New

Zealand, Merv and Bonita moved to Australia in 2001 and started farming in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley. Their 700-cow dairy farm is located between Echuca and Shepparton, with their mixer wagon playing an integral role in their operation. Having plenty of experience dealing with season varieties, they have been using mixer wagons for years, but one brand stood out above the rest – BvL. “You cannot set farm patterns based on past seasons here,” Merv says. “We need to be able to make the changes as they approach, and not get caught unawares. “Our BvL mixer wagon is the tool to deal with the seasonal variations in the most economical way.” Another advantage of using mixer

wagons is that farmers can ensure they are providing their livestock with the correct balance of energy, protein, fibre and minerals – by mixing different feeds together. It also allows minerals and supplements that may not be normally palatable for the animals to be incorporated into feed. This is because the minerals and supplements are blended within the rest of the feed, and therefore hidden, so the stock feed on it without realising. One of the key selling points for Merv and Bonita is the wide range of feed possibilities that can be incorporated. From using high-cost products or lowcost products to incorporating different commodities, the BvL machine provides greater feed optionality. “The mixer wagon enables us to feed different combinations, whether it be citrus

Merv Koch

waste, cereal hay, maize or almond hulls as well as minerals and concentrates,” Merv says. “This gives plenty of options to purchase feed in at the most cost-effective price without losing too much production.” Build quality is a particular standout for Merv, who believes that BvL builds its feed mixer wagons stronger than its competitors. Key features that emphasise the build quality include a 20mm floor plate and 8mm sidewalls, as well as a Double Anti Spill Ring – preventing feed from spilling out of the top of the machine. Not only does it do as the name suggests, but the Double Anti Spill Ring also increases the strength of the machine. In the unfortunate event of a loading tractor or telehandler hitting the mixer wagon, this feature allows the BvL to withstand the hit. Merv and Bonita both say they don’t regularly buy machinery, but when they do, they like to make sure it has all the best features. This was no different with the BvL mixer wagon. “We added the electric powershift gearbox, stainless steel bin and auger liners,” Merv says. “The powershift gearbox is great, we can load up a full mix the night before, leave it

for the night and it starts up very easily.” After using other-branded mixer wagons over the years, Merv and Bonita have been delighted with the switch over to BvL machinery. When they were originally looking into the BvL brand, they had a helping hand to provide support in their purchasing decision. Merv and Bonita had friends in New Zealand and Europe who were already using BvL mixer wagons and reassured them that it would be a wise decision to procure one. “Our first mixer wagon had very high maintenance costs, always blowing bearings and reskins were getting costly,” Merv says. “Loan interest is often cheaper than repairs, so we started to look at what machines could replace our old mixer wagon and landed on BvL.” BvL V-Mix Plus mixer wagons are available at Michael’s Group. Models offered include the 17N-2S (17 cubic metres capacity), 20H-2S (20 cubic metres capacity), 24H-2S (24 cubic

MARKET NEWS

Larger tractor sales have shown signs of strengthening, the TMA says, while baler sales have paused a recent strong run. Image: New Holland

Signs of life While national tractor sales continue to be modest, Tractor and Machinery Association figures show Victorian sales were up in October while high-horsepower units appear to be lifting Sales of agricultural tractors continue to soften across Australia as the demand for machinery returns to pre-COVID-19 levels. October saw around 1,100 tractor sales nationwide, which is 9 per cent below the same time last year. On a year-to-date basis, the industry is around 25 per cent below the same time in 2023, although the decline is close to 14 per cent in dollar terms. This reflects a greater drop in sales of tractors below 100hp. Factors influencing this drop remains unchanged from previous months - dealers have an abundance of inventory, price reductions are occurring along with reduced interest rate deals. The only thing missing is a sense of urgency on behalf of the customer, which is not unexpected given the experiences of the past three years or so. One can see signs of improvement though, as this is the first month in some time that was within 10 per cent of the same month last year. This has been buoyed by a strengthening in the larger horsepower tractor ranges and the next few months will tell whether this trend is sustainable. Looking at the state-by-state picture, all states were down except for Victoria. That state saw a rise in sales of 13 per

52

Farms & Farm Machinery

cent against the same month last year but remains 21 per cent behind for the year to date. Queensland was behind by 12 per cent against October 2023, to be 22 per cent behind for the year to date. New South Wales was down 8 per cent for the month and remains 32 per cent behind for the year, while Western Australia reported a drop of 20 per cent compared to October 2023 and is down 13 per cent compared with the same time last year. South Australia had another big decline of 31 per cent for the month to be also down 31 per cent for the year to date. Tasmania was off 22 per cent for the month with sales in the Northern Territory finishing 33 per cent down. Sales in each of the reporting categories were also lower this month. The small, under 40 horsepower (under 30kw) category was down by 11 per cent compared to October 2023, to be 22 per cent behind for the year to date. The 40hp to 100hp (30-75kw) range was down, this time by 16 per cent, and is now 35 per cent behind for the year to date. Tractors in the 100hp to 200hp (75150kw) category reported a smaller drop of just 1 per cent for the month and remain 23 per cent down for the year to date. Finally, the 200hp plus (150kw plus)

range was 7 per cent down compared to the same month last year, and is now 12 per cent behind for the year to date – which represents the smallest year-to-date drop of any size category. Sales of combine harvesters are not keeping up with last year and currently sit 25 per cent behind 2023 on a year-to-date basis. As with tractors, the market has been well stocked over the past few years and some tapering is to be expected. Baler sales have paused their recent strong run and were down 21 per cent against the same month last year and are about 10 per cent behind for the year to date. Finally, sales of out-front mowers provided a bright spot, being up by a massive 42 per cent in the month in time for mowing season. Phone towers in rural areas do not provide enough coverage to meet farmer needs, Trevor Whittington says. Image: Philsmedia/Wirestock Creators / stock.adobe.com

Missing link Mobile network upgrades have changed city life, but WAFarmers CEO Trevor Whittington says more work is needed so that all of rural Australia can benefit Do you remember Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko in the 1987 movie Wall Street, with a brick-sized mobile phone in hand, looking every bit the corporate kingpin? Back then, mobile phones were more of an accessory than a necessity - perfect for the CBD but utterly useless once you left the city limits. The arrival of mobiles in Australia in 1987 might have been revolutionary, but only if you stayed within the tiny coverage footprint of the 1G analogue network. For rural Australia? Forget it. The 1990s brought 2G - a digital upgrade with SMS (a godsend for pager users) - but coverage barely scratched the surface outside big towns. Fun fact: 2G’s GSM network could reach up to 120km, but data? Non-existent. It kept plenty of station people happy though, provided there was a tower within cooee. Then came 3G in 2003. It introduced email and video calls, but let’s face it, the rollout in the bush wasn’t exactly lightning-fast. Towers crept out across the countryside, but nowhere near the pace we see today with wind farms. Enter Telstra’s Next G network in 2006. Built on the 850MHz band, it was a lifeline for rural Aussies, offering longer range and better building penetration. Another fun fact: Next G set a record in 2007 when a call was made from Mount Kosciuszko to Melbourne - 200 km away. Pastoralists rejoiced; they were finally connected. But then, the game changed with the launch of the iPhone in 2007. Data-hungry millennials devoured apps like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter – all of which had recently been released

54

Farms & Farm Machinery

Trevor Whittington is CEO of WAFarmers

– and this drove a surge in demand for faster networks. By the time 4G arrived in 2011, the telcos had figured out where the profits were and this was in town, not in the paddocks. Building a tower was cheap, but connecting it to fibre, powering it and upgrading it over time is where the real money gets burned. Telstra focused on country towns with easy fibre access, leaving remote areas to rely on government subsidies like the Black Spot Program.

Even with network upgrades, this means farmers still have network connectivity issues. Image: Bits and Splits / stock.adobe.com

The problem is that funding for black spots has dried up. Round 7 was a paltry $12.5 million, which doesn’t stretch far across the whole country. Now we’ve got 5G, which promised blazing-fast speeds. Sounds great, right? Not so fast. It works on low, mid, and high-frequency bands. Low-band 5G (up to 15km range) is what rural areas got, but it doesn’t offer much improvement over 4G. Meanwhile, city folk get mmWave highband 5G—superfast but with a range of just 250 metres. For the bush, 5G feels like another tech hand-me-down. While 6G is coming in 2030, with promises of microcells and speeds 100 times faster, the coverage radius is a laughable 100 metres. This might be great for robotic surgeries, but again remains useless for farmers. Remember TPG’s failed 4G network? They abandoned it in 2019 after Huawei was banned as a supplier. Telstra and TPG later proposed a regional partnership: Telstra would access TPG’s spectrum, while TPG would piggyback off Telstra’s regional towers. A win-win, surely? Not to the ACCC. They killed the deal in 2022, citing concerns about city competition. Meanwhile, the bush was left with Telstra holding the bag. Instead, TPG merged with Vodafone, which now shares spectrum with Optus. Again, this is great for cities, but their

rural footprint barely scratches the Wheatbelt. Ask Telstra where they provide coverage, and you’ll get a glossy map full of blue smudges. “Official coverage” doesn’t always translate to real-world reception and farmers need precise, paddock-level maps that show actual coverage - not the “fortuitous” signal Telstra likes to shrug off when it drops. The federal government recently spent $17 million mapping 180,000km of highways using Australia Post vans. It’s a start, but what about the back paddock? While waiting for the government or Telstra to act, farmers can help themselves with tech upgrades. A GORepeater paired with a Zetifi antenna works wonders for boosting signal. For farms beyond mobile range, Starlink satellite dishes (which have an initial fee plus a monthly subscription) are lifesavers for internet and Wi-Fi calls. For the header, the Flat High Performance Starlink Dish offers connectivity on the move. Yes, it’s costly, but it beats the frustration

Rural areas do not have the same access to fast phone networks as their city counterparts. Image: sibway / stock.adobe.com

of dropping calls mid-paddock. So, who pays for the gap? Telstra? They’re a private company now, focused on shareholders. The government? Black Spot funding has dwindled from $100 million in 2015 to just $12.4 million in 2023. Farmers? Many already spend thousands on boosters, aerials and satellite solutions. What’s needed is a real commitment: •  At least $100 million annually for rural towers. •  A rethink of spectrum allocation, ensuring it’s used where it’s needed. •  Incentives for telcos to build

uneconomic towers, covering operational losses, not just construction costs. If rural Australia is ever going to have reliable mobile coverage, we need a longterm plan and realistic expectations. Let’s start by demanding better maps, smarter funding and fairer spectrum policies. Until then, it’s up to us to make the best of the tech available and keep pushing for a fair go in the paddock. After all, the bush has always looked after itself - but a little help wouldn’t hurt.

FARMING

Troy Ainslie is already using virtual fencing technology at his Tasmanian dairy farm. Image: Oscar Sloane Photography

Virtual fencing Virtual fencing technology for cows is currently being trialled at the Victorian government’s Gippsland smart farm, with the help of New Zealand-based company Halter. Farm manager Troy Ainslie outlines how this tech is already making a difference at one Tasmanian dairy Virtual fencing technology is one step closer for Victorian farmers, after the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) announced that Agriculture Victoria would be trialling the technology at its Ellinbank SmartFarm, in Gippsland. These types of technologies are already seeing great benefits in international markets and around Australia, including in Queensland, Tasmania, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. New Zealand-based company Halter will provide its virtual fencing technology, which is already being used on more than 200,000 animals and on hundreds of farms, for use as part of the Victorian trials. Smart collar Halter’s technology combines virtual fencing with animal guidance technologies, through a smart collar worn by cows. Cows are trained to follow guidance cues from the collar, encouraging them to stay within virtual fences that are set on a farmer’s mobile app.

58

Farms & Farm Machinery

Using the app, cows can be virtually herded to a new location such a fresh pasture or to the milking shed – reducing the need for physical fences, motorbikes and dogs to move the animals. The smart collar works by guiding cows with two primary cues – sound and vibration. The sound cues give the cows directional guidance if they cross a virtual boundary, while the vibration cues encourage them to walk in the correct direction. If these two primary cues are ignored, a ‘low-energy electric pulse’ cue is used to reinforce the primary cues and encourage the cow back within the virtual boundary. Halter says this pulse is significantly weaker in energy than the shock produced from an electric fence. “The energy of this pulse is set to the lowest level that will stop a cow from ignoring the primary cues,” the company says. “If it is set any lower, they will ignore it.” Once the cows are trained, Halter says the pulse is used far less frequently,

because cows quickly learn to follow the primary cues. “Cows are intelligent, they learn and adapt quickly to our system,” Halter says. “Once they associate the sound cue with crossing a virtual boundary, they quickly learn to correct their direction and avoid a pulse.” According to the New Zealand-based company, cows wearing the smart collar are only exposed to the sound and vibration primary cues for 0.1 per cent of the day – equivalent to 96 seconds. This means that for over 99 per cent of a day, cows are undisturbed and receive no cues. One farming operation that is reaping the benefits of Halter’s technology is Tasmanian-based Woodrising Dairies. Woodrising Dairies Owned by Compass Tas Dairy Operations, which has six dairy farms across Tasmania, Woodrising Dairies is located in Cressy, a small town south-west of Launceston.

Ainslie has seen the smart collars improve safety at Woodrising Dairies. Image: Oscar Sloane Photography

Farming across 155 hectares (383 acres), farm manager Troy Ainslie has been using the virtual farming technology for over 12 months. Since implementing it, he says it has increased safety for his team members when getting in the paddock – which often contain more than 500 cows. “Safety is a big focus for us,” Ainslie says. “With Halter’s technology, we no longer need our team members to go in the pad-

dock when it’s dark and try and move the cows into the dairy.” Instead, cows are brought into the dairy each day at 5am, using the cues from the smart collar, which helps guide the animals to the dairy. This is all controlled from the Halter mobile app and eliminates the need for team members to use motorbikes or dogs. “It’s usually freezing and really dark at

that time of the morning, so the smart collar saves us the time of physically getting into the paddock,” Ainslie says. Grazing management has also become easier for Ainslie, as Woodrising team members have more control and no longer need to do the manual work required of strip, block and cell grazing. The Woodrising farm manager can also monitor his cows’ health as a result of the

technology, because alerts go off on the mobile app to monitor the animals’ reproductive status, location and health. For example, Woodrising uses Halter’s smart collar to monitor cows during the mating season. “Instead of having to visually pick cows for artificial breeding, the smart collar flashes at us to show the collar’s machine learning has detected behaviour that indicates heat detection,” Ainslie says. This feature can help identify which cows need to be shifted out of a paddock or moved to a shed.

60

Farms & Farm Machinery

Halter’s technology has also reduced the need for tedious jobs, such as sitting on a motorbike behind the cows and trying to move them. “Everything is controlled on the Halter app, so we can move the cows around, set virtual boundary fences, change herds and change what mob the cows are in – all remotely,” Ainslie says. Praising the virtual fencing technology, the Woodrising Dairies farm manager emphasises that it has given him a lot more control over day to day operations at the property. Usually, a team member would walk

around the property once a week to check on pasture levels, but now with the Halter pasture satellite recordings, there is no longer a need for this. Another example of time being put to better use is Woodrising remotely moving cows into a block and then checking in after a couple hours to see how well they’ve grazed. “We can then decide if we want to move the cows to extend that block, or move them out of the area,” Ainslie says. “Halter’s smart collar virtual fencing technology has given us more control with much less work required.”

About a decade after first looking at the Merlo brand, Victorian dealership Farm & Diesel is officially part of the manufacturer’s network Merlo’s newest dealer might have only represented the brand for a few months, but it is already long enough for them to describe the experience as “unreal”. Farm & Diesel is located in northern Victoria, selling the Merlo product from its base in the town of Epsom, alongside its other sales branch in Swan Hill. The dealership joined the Merlo family midyear and has already been able to display the manufacturer’s products at field day events such as Elmore. Farm & Diesel founder and owner Sam Walker says the support from Merlo Australia has made the experience overwhelmingly positive. “It’s been unreal,” Walker says.

62

Farms & Farm Machinery

“To have that support and the backing by the OEM has really made a big difference in the marketplace with telehandlers in our local area. “It’s been great knowing we have access to the backup service, parts and the backing of the OEM in Australia.” Merlo’s national sales manager Chris Wilson was in attendance at Farm & Diesel’s stand during the Elmore Field Days in October. Walker described him as being one of the key figures in helping Farm & Diesel become part of the Merlo network. “We first looked at Merlo 10 years ago,” Walker says. “We’ve just branched back recently and

revisited where we looked at 10 years ago and met Chris, plus a few other Merlo dealers, and went from there. “There are a lot of Merlo machines out there and it’s well supported and well backed up. “Merlo has got a great dealer network and they are very willing to work with the dealers.” Farm & Diesel’s catchment area in northern Victoria takes in several types of farm, including cropping, dairy and horticulture. Catering to these different industries, plus finding common ground in terms of the ideal machinery for each situation, means versatility is key. This is why Merlo’s MultiFarmer is

shaping up as an important part of Farm & Diesel’s offering. “The MultiFarmer has been a real attraction at the field days, and I reckon it is well suited to this area,” Walker says. The name provides an insight into the MultiFarmer’s purpose, being described by Merlo as a “unique and unrivalled telescopic tractor”, and which combines the benefits of both tractors and telehandlers. At its essence, it provides the functionality and drivability of a tractor along with the lifting ability of a telehandler, thanks to

its telescopic boom. Two models of MultiFarmer are available in the Australian market – the MF44.7 and 44.9. The MF44.7 offers a 6.8 metre maximum lift height and 3.9m maximum reach, with the MF44.9 giving users an 8.9m maximum lift height and 6.1m maximum reach. Both are powered by 170hp (125kW) engines and have 4,000kg maximum load capacities. The MultiFarmer is loaded with features that mean it is not merely a hybrid of two

machines, but one which excels in both areas. Firstly, its suspended cabin has active hydropneumatic suspension as standard, which Merlo says means operators will “feel like you’re seated on a comfortable cushion, even when driving over the roughest terrain”. PTO, 3-point linkage, trailer hitch and hydraulic distributors are all standard across the MultiFarmer range, along with boom suspension to ensure stability while using the MultiFarmer as a telehandler.

Its axles have been developed and manufactured in-house by Merlo and have differential locks to ensure traction on any terrain. It is the combination of these features that Walker cites as being his standouts and which he says has also been popular with Farm & Diesel’s customers – along with the fact these are provided as standard rather than additional options. “Having the standard boom suspension and standard cab suspension – they’re some really great features,” he says. “Not having to spec them up and having them as an option, but actually having them as standard, really gets the customer over the line. “Having that three-point linkage and PTO, four remotes in the back, standard front and rear diff locks - that all brings customers in.”

Another important feature on Merlo’s MultiFarmer is the ASCS safety system. This system adjusts the speed and maximum extent of the unit’s movements based on the attachments in use, the load being handled and its position, therefore eliminating the risk of the machine overturning. Merlo’s patented EPD system electron-

ically controls the engine and transmission, managing engine speed, hydrostatic pump flow rate and hydrostatic drive displacement. These help to maximise efficiency and reduce rpm, with Merlo saying this saves up to 18 per cent in fuel consumption. Another popular product in Merlo’s range is the Turbofarmer, which is a more

Hands up

PET-FP-5011476-B

Celebrating 30 years in Australia’s access equipment hire industry, Skyreach continues its tradition of innovation with a variety of brands on offer. When managing director Rod Leach founded Skyreach in the Brisbane suburb of Geebung back in 1994, Australia’s equipment hire market was markedly different. Pure access equipment providers were scarce, and most rental machines were outdated second-hand imports, Skyreach product and training specialist James Nightingale says. “We aimed to differentiate ourselves by investing in brand new machines that offered advanced safety features, ease of use and versatility, ultimately enhancing productivity on site,” he says. Today the company is among Australia’s leading rental providers, offering a wide range of access and material handling equipment, including telehandlers, forklifts and various elevated work platforms (EWPs) - such as manlifts, scissor lifts, and boom lifts. With a network of branches along the East Coast, from Melbourne to Cairns, the company serves a diverse clientele across sectors including construction, mining, manufacturing and entertainment. Skyreach today stands as a testament

to innovation and resilience in Australia’s access equipment hire industry. Skyreach’s extensive inventory includes: • Single person lifts: Ranging from 3.6 metres (12 feet) to 8m (26ft) • Scissor lifts: With heights from 3.8m (13ft) to 32.2m (105ft) • Boom lifts: Covering heights from 13.7m (45ft) to 47.7m (156ft) • Knuckle booms: Also ranging from 10.6m (34ft) to 47.7m (156ft) Additionally, Skyreach offers specialised equipment such as: • Track mounted scissors/booms: Designed for slopes up to 16 degrees • Speed level scissors: Capable of operating on slopes up to 14 degrees • Xtra capacity booms: Able to carry up to 454kg and working on slopes up to 7 degrees • Hybrid machines: Fully electric with onboard diesel generators to charge them • Lightweight boom lifts: Ideal for suspended slab jobs where weight is an issue • Spider lifts: Light weight and flexible for both indoor and uneven outdoor terrain Nightingale says the company philosophy is a straightforward one.

“We stock the best brands and types of equipment in each segment. This commitment to quality ensures our customers have access to the safest and most reliable machinery in the industry.” That said, Skyreach recognises that equipment is only as good as the operators behind it. To ensure safety and competency, the company offers Yellow Card training and verification of competence (VOC) training for operators on site. This training equips operators with the skills needed to use specific machines productively and safely. As Skyreach enters its next decade, its commitment to innovation, quality and customer service remains steadfast, promising to meet any challenges that the future may bring. As its motto states, Skyreach is “The Only Way Up”. For those looking to enhance their access equipment capabilities or seeking reliable hire solutions, Skyreach stands ready to assist.
