The top successes and threats in transport and logistics as professionals expect emerging markets to grow, Carsten Gayer highlights the success factors and threats for logistics and transport companies.

G

lobal INtellIgeNce allIaNce’s (gIa) business Perspectives on emerging Markets 20122017 report has revealed logistics and transport professionals expect emerging markets to contribute 36% of their global revenues on average by 2017, more than double the share today. seventeen global logistics and transport professionals surveyed said china, brazil, India and Russia will remain the industry’s top four emerging markets the next five years, followed by Indonesia, Vietnam, singapore and chile. Emerging markets looking to 2017, large operators have the opportunity to leverage their scale, streamline processes, and business models to manage the regional complexities in fast growing markets. a quarter of the survey respondents said they see emerging markets as future large markets. one such market is china, particularly in the area of cold chain logistics. the chinese central government’s plans to overhaul food safety means that up to 90% of meat, fish and fruit products will be required to utilise cold chain logistics by 2015, up from only 10% to 45% today. Threats in emerging markets the companies believed they will be held back by bureaucracy and red tape as well as poor infrastructure, which are rated as the top threats. this is particularly true for landlocked regions or archipelagos. an example of hard-to-access markets is Indonesia, which has more than 1,700 islands. according to Pt Maersk Indonesia, a liner ship6 | Logistics&MaterialsHandling November 2012

Success factors in emerging markets according to the logistics and transport companies, for winning in the long term, the top success factors will be a localised competitive positioning, access to customers as well as product and service quality. gIa survey respondents said they would like to have done something differently in how they planned and executed their emerging markets strategy. some would like to have made greater efforts to adapt to local conditions, while others regret not addressing supply chain issues sooner or the lack of strong local talent and partners. Many would have entered emerging markets earlier or ensured they had better local market intelligence and due diligence. overall, availability, accuracy and completeness of market intelligence on emerging markets are an issue for any industry. In total, 60% of the over 400 companies featured in the crossindustry study said that decision making is delayed because of lack of information, while 75% doubted the accuracy and completeness of the information they have on emerging markets. emerging markets present a lot of uncertainties but by understanding the facilitators of growth and the unique characteristics of each market with local market knowledge and partners, transport and logistics companies will be better poised to take advantage of the forecasted growth to 2017 and beyond. datacapture&labelling

Automated and accurate Automated systems for payload data collection are ensuring higher mine efficiency.

A

survey of some of Australia’s most senior mine managers, geologists, planners and engineers has revealed that a number of mines have been collecting payload data manually, either with handwritten logs or information typed into spreadsheets. “As the management style for mines continues to evolve from one of maximising production regardless of cost to one more closely resembling a factory-based ‘just in time’ system, it’s incredible that so many mines are still relying on data that may be incorrect,” elliot Chisholm, Loadrite’s global product manager, said. The slow uptake of automated measurement and reporting systems is due to lack of awareness of what’s available and concerns about the longevity of technology solutions in the physically tough mining environment. “The value of this information is huge and it’s easy to implement an automated system that completely removes the need for handwritten logs or manual spreadsheets,” Chisholm added. According to Chisholm automated measuring of the amount of material moved, and then analysing the data through a variety of reports has far reaching benefits. At the basic level, an automated system A D _ L in Man HM OS NOV 1 2 . loader p d f canPact a ge installed excavator or_wheel as a gauge for the operator, and indicate exactly

16 | Logistics&MaterialsHandling November 2012

Better efficiency across mines can be achieved with automated payload monitoring and reporting

how much material has been moved, how much is in the bucket, and how much is in the truck ahead. This will ensure that trucks are never over or under filled which is important for safety and cost efficiency. At the next level, information sent from each individual loader to a central software system can track how much material is moving on site, and monitor the achievement of planned throughput. Data can be used in number of ways to ensure that the mine is working as productively and efficiently as possible, Chisholm explained. The content and the format of the reports can 2 8 / 0 9on / the 1 2 system , 1 2to: best 0 5 suit P the M be1 customised mine’s individual operations.

reports are delivered to a central computer using usB data module, radio modem, WiFi or cellular technology. Once arrived, it is exported into various formats enabling the data to be viewed and dissected across various software platforms. Another survey found that the majority of mines did their reconciliations monthly as generating reports from handwritten logs were time consuming. With an automated system, reports can be run daily or even hourly to help prevent losses. This will help mine managers track the target productivity levels and get accurate reports. “There is a new wave of thinking regarding mine management and it involves getting as much information as possible in as close to real time as possible. Managers want to know what’s really happening so they can plan workflow more effectively and control costs while increasing production,” Chisholm said. The systems can be used for entry-level through to advanced functionality options depending on the whether the requirement is of basic weighing information for a small loader, or greater accuracy and data capture capabilities for production-sized equipment. “Better efficiency across mines can be achieved with automated payload monitoring and reporting.”

Winners shine at Mercury Awards The 2012 Mercury Awards ceremony has been the biggest one yet since its inception in 2005. It was indeed an industry night of nights. Hetaal Badiyani writes.

M

ore than one hundred guests attended the 7 th annual awards dinner ceremony on September 6 at Doltone House, Darling Island Wharf in Sydney. The 2012 Logistics & Materials Handling awards were the biggestand best- ever, with more than 47 finalists. The event was opened by Martin Sinclair, Associate Publisher of Logistics & Materials Handling. Guest speaker Michael Kilgariff from Australian Logistics Council took the stage before handing the mic over to comedian and masters of ceremonies Vince Sorrenti. The awards gave recognition to excellence in logistics, materials handling and supply chain management. The presentation provided the platform for business achievements to be recognised and rewarded before their industry. The awards celebrated the successes of these industries leading lights whose contributions makes the industry exciting, progressive, and modern.

Best of the Best This year Pacific Brands took out the 7th Annual Mercury Best of the Best award. The Best of the Best Award was chosen from amongst the winners in the other categories. Pacific Brands also won the Best Warehousing and/or Storage Solution for the newly built distribution centre (DC) in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. The distribution centre impressed the judges and they congratulated Pacific Brands for the changes. John McDermott, manager at the DC said he was extremely pleased with the outcome. 18 | Logistics&MaterialsHandling November 2012

The much coveted awards

Comedian and masters of ceremonies Vince Sorrenti

Flexibility between pacific Brands and Dematic acted as the key driver for working on the integrated logistics solution for the DC. Some of the challenges involved in installing one of the largest raised storage areas in Australia, over 5,400 square metres, was to utilise otherwise wasted airspace and to make space-efficient narrow aisle storage systems. order fulfilment, productivity and accuracy were improved by voice picking, smart zone-skipping conveyors and integrated warehouse control, and order fulfilment software.

Dematic’s DC design included a Dynamic Slot Area where up to 150 pallets of goods could be placed on labelled locations on the DC’s floor. Stock required for orders is then picked directly from the pallet. A permanent team dedicated to slotting product, with rF-directed equipment is used for re-stocking and putting goods away. “Automation has its place, but it also has very distinct limitations. For our style of dynamic operation, we believe the smartest logistics solution is one that can be scaled up or down to suit the required workload.”

Logistics & Materials Handling would like to thank the 2012 award sponsors who made this year’s awards the biggest and the best ever. They are: CASI, SSI Schaefer, Century Yuasa, Schaefer Store and SmartTrans. The team at Logistics & Materials Handling would also like to thank the returning judges, Kim Winter, Global Ceo, Logistics executive; Phil Lumsden, NSW General Manager, DHL Global Forwarding; and rob o’Byrne, Group Managing Director, Logistics Bureau for their time and expertise during the judging process. Logistics & Materials Handling would like to congratulate our 2012 Mercury award winners who are Linfox Logistics, eStore Logistics, rhiannon Buckland, Pacific Brands, Trimble Navigation, CHeP, CST Wastewater Solutions, and Konecranes. Sincere thanks to all the participants who entered our awards, and made this year’s Mercury awards ceremony a memorable industry event. The following pages illustrate their successes.

Best Green Initiative

C

ST Wastewater Solutions took out this year’s Mercury Award in the Best Green Initiative category for its implementation of a water recovery plant at the new SAB Miller owned Bluetongue Brewery in New South Wales. The new water recovery plant is designed by CST to meet world’s best practice in water reuse standards in the food and beverage industry and has achieved all of the environmental targets set by SAB. The waste water treatment and green energy plant at the $120 million brewery also provides valuable renewable energy thereby reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and cutting overall energy needs by 15 per cent. CST is a member of the Global Water and Energy (GWE) Alliance which is made up of a select group of companies around the world committed to providing solutions in waste and wastewater treatment for the recovery of green energy and water. The brewery’s water recovery is subjected to GWE’s state-of-the-art anaerobic treatment.

This process significantly reduces the brewery’s carbon footprint by indirectly avoiding the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere through savings in electrical running costs and by biogas reuse. The anaerobic pre-treatment is followed by treatment processes involving an aerobic membrane bio reactor and reverse osmosis. It produces treated effluent that will be safely reused as process and cleaning water within the brewery, reducing by 50 per cent the need for fresh water, thereby greatly contributing to reducing the amount of water typically used to produce a litre of beer. On average the removal efficiency of GWE’s anaerobic wastewater treatment installations is as high as 90-95 per cent which brings the organic load down to regulatory discharge standards for most types of wastewater. Besides the economic advantages of GWE’s anaerobic wastewater treatment, there is also a clear environmental advantage in significantly reducing factory’s carbon footprint. This is done not only by supplying renewable energy from

Former editor Annie Dang presents the award to Brent Whyte of CST Wastewater Solutions for the Best Green Initiative award.

the closed anaerobic reactor, thus reducing or even eliminating reliance on fossil fuels, but also by replacing traditional, open, methaneproducing lagoons, and by replacing powerconsuming, sludge-producing aerobic waste water treatment plants. The judges were thoroughly impressed with the innovation demonstrated and the prioritisation of minimising fresh water use and reducing energy use.

Technology Application

T

rIMBlE Navigation took out the 2012 Technology Application award sponsored by Century Yuasa, for developing a GeoManger Unit which helped achieve drastic improvements for WesTrac. The winning Trimble project was the centralisation of job dispatch and management systems for WesTrac. The project is still under construction in Newcastle and will serve as the WesTrac operational headquarters for NSW and the ACT. Trimble began with a pilot program in Thornton NSW, which involved 14 vehicles installed with a GeoManager unit. The key objectives were carefully monitored over the eight week period in Thornton which was fleet management, driver safety and work management. Fleet management focussed on improving safety, productivity, improving fuel use and customer service. The second technological solution, driver safety allows fleet managers to proactively manage driving behaviours which helps identify

22 | Logistics&MaterialsHandling November 2012

and reward good drivers and retrain drivers that put the company at risk. The benefits of this is lowering of accidents and liability, improving company’s public image and fuel savings due to less speeding or fast acceleration starts. The final initiative was work management which provides dispatchers and managers’ visibility into work schedules and mobile worker activities which help companies assign jobs based on real-time schedule status. The benefits are improved efficiency and quality of service through better communications by issuing orders online to a mobile worker who can receive jobs and update work status with a smartphone or laptop. This ability to receive information remotely means that productivity is increased as there is less need to return to the office to receive work assignments. Michael Chan, business development manager at Trimble said the implementation of the WesTrac project was not without difficulties. “There were challenges obviously, the challenges with technology are around people’s

adoption of technology and people’s ability to change and adapt to new systems and solutions that are being put into place.” Trimble GeoManager helped improve objectives, with results from the pilot now being used to justify the rollout of a wider field service management solution across the NSW WesTrac field service fleet consisting of over 150 vehicles. logisticsmagazine.com.au

Warehousing and/or Storage Solutions

P

acific Brands had a double win at the Mercury awards this year, taking out the award for Best of the Best as well as Best Warehousing and/or Storage Solution for the newly built distribution centre (Dc) in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. The judges were impressed with the Dc and commended Pacific Brands for the changes they had made. “it is a well integrated solution to a complex challenge and was a significant task with a great outcome under a business transformation.” When interviewed on the event night John McDermott, manager at the new Dc, said that he was extremely pleased with the outcome. “it feels tremendous to win on behalf of the team we’ve got back in Truganina, it’s been a tremendous effort from a lot of our partners and i suppose this is a reward for those efforts put in and also our partners at Dematic.” The scale of the project was to build a 42,000 square metre Dc that would consolidate several leading brands under one roof and the site

decided on was in Truganina in Melbourne’s western suburbs. creating sufficient shelf space in the Dc was important to provide pick face locations for more than 50,000 SKUs and storage for over 25,000 pallets. When Pacific Brands and Dematic started working on the integrated logistics solution for the Dc, flexibility was a key driver as the general manager for logistics at Pacific Brands, David Miller expands on. “Since we started working on the project, like many other suppliers to the retail industry, Pacific Brands has experienced a shift in customer buying habits,” he added. “The rapid growth of online shopping, in particular, means we now have to pick and pack an increasing number of orders for single line items. “To cost-effectively process such orders requires a flexible approach to order fulfilment, and this was one of the main reasons we implemented voice picking as our key order picking

technology,” Miller said. Miller added on the Mercury awards night when accepting the award: “Moving five Dc’s into one major Dc comes with extraordinary challenges, we worked through that. i won’t say it was easy, it was very tough but the team got through it in the end.”

Top Third Party Logistics Provider (3PL)

e

STore Logistics have taken out the award for Top Third Party Logistics Provider at this year’s Mercury awards proudly sponsored by caSi aNZ. eStore have developed a highly configurable warehouse management system (WMS) and set of order processes that provide a customised solution for each client. The WMS was established to reduce the high processing cost usually associated with small consumer online orders. after his own difficult experiences buying and selling products online, eStore founder and ceo Leigh Williams, wanted to create australia’s most efficient and streamlined logistics company for both online retailers and traditional retailers. He said that other logistics providers were not adapting rapidly to address changing consumer demand and he saw a market problem which he could help solve. The WMS ensures that regardless of the client’s business requirements, they are able 24 | Logistics&MaterialsHandling November 2012

to rapidly implement a solution that ensures the most efficient service is provided through strong relationships with international and domestic carriers. Williams expressed his appreciation for being recognised for the toil that had been put in to his young start up company. “Thank you- it wasn’t quite expected we’ve had a lot of years of hard work so it’s good to get some recognition for it.” He added that the best aspect of the software is the savings that customer’s can experience. “i think the cost savings we’ve put back to customers especially at the freight front with our freight optimising software, as well as at the back end processing warehousing level are our best initiatives.” Williams said that during the early stages of creating the business there were lots of late nights and testing in order to produce solutions on time to clients.

Winner Leigh Williams accepts the Top Third Party Logistics Provider award.

“Without a doubt- testing is lots of fun. When we first started out probably the first year there were at least five or six nights where we did all nighters to get stuff going. We’d design a solution, we’d sell it to a client we were bringing on board, we didn’t have the solution we had to build it so that was probably the biggest challenge.” logisticsmagazine.com.au

Supply Chain Innovation

C

HEP took out this year’s award for Supply Chain Innovation, sponsored by SMART TRANS, for its project of manufactured new and reusable heat pads for customers Alba. The brief for the project nominated for a Mercury Award was to design develop, test and manufacture a pool of new high temperature reusable heat pads that would allow Alba to reheat solidified tallow (animal fat) ready for decanting. The time frame was very tight with 12 weeks given for CHEP to manufacture a sufficient volume to meet the customer demand. On the night of the Mercury Awards Senior Business Relationship Manager, Peter Gaddes was asked about what was the biggest challenge of the project. “Probably the time frame of 12 weeks and bringing a team together that was stretched not only from one seaboard to another but also internationally as well. “Communication was probably the main

achievement that we were able to make from that point of view.” The project managed to help improve efficiency and productivity by reducing heating time from 48 hours down to 24-36, meaning a significant decrease especially when measured over a long term period. “The customer can use the unit for a multitude of different products and when they don’t need to use it they can remove it from the main container it is suited to and use it for non heated products.” Gaddes said the project team ensured shipping efficiencies were maximised without risking the quality of the product. “The added benefits of using the UNICORN Hi Temp Heat Pad for Alba is its flexibility as it can be simply slipped into a standard IBC where and when the customer needs it and removed when they don’t,” Gaddes said. Ashley Palmer says the partnership with CHEP was built on a need to work with a supplier who could meet their growing demand

Former editor Annie Dang congratulates Peter Gaddes and Dzintra Horder on the company’s win.

for equipment and services. “We’ve added a million litres a month to our capacity and we intend to grow this. CHEP has the capacity to grow with us and has demonstrated this in WA by being there for us at peak periods to keep up with production.”

Materials Handling Solution

K

ONECRANES partnered with Austal with winning results at this year’s Mercury Awards as they took out the Best Materials Handling Solution category, sponsored by Century Yuasa. Konecranes and Austal worked together to provide a lifting solution for a project constructing large ship sections for the defence arena. Austal typically uses 16 overhead hoists working simultaneously to lift and move each assembled ship section before positioning it into the main structure. Each hoist needed its own operator which meant that 16 employees were engaged in this work at any one time. Austal approached Konecranes seeking an improved working method that would require fewer employees and provide an all round better solution to ensure the best possible outcome for the company. Based in Henderson, eight kilometres south of the port city of Fremantle in Western Australia, the shipyard’s building halls utilise 32 Konecranes CXT monorail hoists, each with a capacity of 3.2 tonnes. They travel east-west

along the 110 metre x 28-metre wide building halls on monorails, with up to several hoists on each rail. The hoists can be moved from monorail to monorail within the multiple bay building as required. Austal had formerly used the cranes of another supplier but decided that Konecranes could offer an innovative solution. Phil Growden, Site Services Manager at Austal described the process of engaging with Konecranes to make the company more efficient in materials handling. “We needed up to 16 people each with a control button to lift an assembled section of ship,” recalled Growden. “They came up with a solution of multiple remote controls, whereby a single operator can typically control 16 designated hoists and up to 20 at a time. We’re pleased with their solution, which works well in practice. “Konecranes were the only crane supplier who could give us the multiple crane controls we needed,” said Growden.

Roger Persson of Konecranes receives the Materials Handling Solutions award.

Trevor Ednie, sales manager for Western Australia and South Australian Konecranes branches said: “We were pleased to be able to devise this type of solution for Austal, which makes best use of the advanced lifting technology, sophisticated remote controls and human problem-solving skills that Konecranes is renowned for.” logisticsmagazine.com.au

Logistics Leader

L

iNfox took out this year’s logistics leader award for the multitude of sustainable changes which it has made to the company, proving it to be at the forefront in an area which is continually growing in significance. the judges were impressed by the sustainable changes: “linfox goals and achievements sets industry standards they should be proud of, it is a good initiative.” linfox made a decision to accept the science behind global warming and make the necessary changes to lessen the company’s impact on the environment. the company knew that environmental responsibility would lead to improved business. “We regard reducing the use of energy and thereby emissions, is good for the environment and good for business.” linfox was the first company in australia to use carbon footprint software to examine the supply chain to find ways to reduce carbon emissions and as a result it is reducing energy

use by three per cent by changing transport routes, sources of freight and modes of transport within the supply chains. linfox also launched Eco-Drive which is a driver training program that teaches ten key techniques including driving smoothly, reducing idling time, planning ahead, using the appropriate gear and avoiding heavy braking. these techniques can make a big difference to fuel consumption and can reduce carbon emissions. the program is available to all linfox employees and can be delivered in cab by a specialist trainer or alternatively online at linfox College. fuel was the most significant source of carbon emissions within the company which is why the Eco- Drive program was necessary to teach better driving behaviour. linfox has been able to reduce its 2007/2008 rates of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 37 per cent, due largely to the improved driving techniques by the operators. Mcinnes said that linfox will continue to instigate changes within the company with the introduction of biofuels.

Michael Kilgariff of ALC presents the awards to David McInnes.

“We’re now looking at alternative fuels so we’re starting to use biodiesel more extensively and we’re also looking at some changes on aerodynamics on our vehicles,” he said. “By educating our staff and getting involvement by our staff- that is the key to our success.”

Young Professional of the Year

C

oNgratulatioNs to rhiannon Buckland from Bluescope steel for winning this year’s Young Professional of the Year award, sponsored by ssi schaefer. rhiannon started her career as a logistics operations graduate in Bsl NsW logistics operations area. she showed that she had the clear ability to re-think and drive change in her graduate role as technical officer and saw that the role could be improved by increasing the number of tasks the role could manage effectively without increase in personnel. Bluescope said: “she implemented changes, one of which was to build easy access to logistics operations information and streamline reporting. the new processes and efficiencies she put in place assisted not only her but also succeeding incumbents.” rhiannon was selected to Bluescope steel australia and New Zealand, supply Chain and Processing Continuous improvement (Ci) steering Committee, Port Kembla in March 2012. she has 28 | Logistics&MaterialsHandling November 2012

been active member in the committee and drives for further improvement through the Ci network. one of rhiannon’s main achievements has been when she recently project managed the implementation of key logistics warehouse operations improvement initiatives called ‘block stack management.’ she delivered the first project phase on schedule and under budget and the bottom line improvement of the project will reduce the amount of old/obsolete finished goods caused directly by inefficient block stack management. on the night of the Mercury awards, rhiannon said she was impressed by the opposition but didn’t expect to win but she is proud of being able to work in an industry dominated by men and achieve significant outcomes “i have had a lot of different achievements and different people might have thought some were bigger than others for me personally i acted as a warehouse manager in charge of a lot of operators and telling a lot of truck drivers what to do and i suppose i was a lot younger than them and

they weren’t used to girls in the warehouse so that was a big achievement for me-gaining their respect and for them to listen to me.” rhiannon is positive about the future and excited about her role at Bluescope, which is consistently evolving. logisticsmagazine.com.au

Browsing through supply chain software Choosing the right supply chain management software is the key to constructing a flexible supply web. Craig Charlton from Epicor software writes.

T

HE supply chain has been evolving quickly over the last decade spurred by wider globalisation and fierce competition. However, high costs of transportation have been forcing many Australian businesses to pass these costs onto consumers, making it increasingly difficult for businesses to compete within the global market. Many businesses across every conceivable market sector have been scrutinising the supply chain for ways of reducing costs through improved efficiency, while software vendors promise that their enterprise application will provide the desperately sought competitive edge. In the 2012 Gartner Supply Chain Top 25 for Asia Pacific, the only Australian company which made the list, was retail giant Woolworths. According to Gartner research director Vikas Sarandghar “while demand in Asia Pacific is growing, inflation, rising costs and a tightening labour market pose challenges for companies in the region.”

Current scenario Today, the chain is more like a carefully constructed web with spokes and bars of suppliers, subcontractor, customers, manufacturers and outsourcers in desperate need of cohesive processes and information to deliver profitability. Although software can help, businesses need to align their strategic direction to a more service orientated architecture to match the way the industrial world has evolved. The days when one company sourced materials, built it and sold it all through direct control have long past. The supply chain, through its business processes and software architectures, must accept this economic reality to provide optimum fit. Choosing right Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is still seen by many as just a new form of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), which for the last three decades has allowed disparate computer systems to exchange documents such as

Craig Charlton

purchase orders, receipts and bills. Developed in an era of mainframes and bespoke systems, EDI is notoriously complex to implement and lacks the rigid standards that often limit customer and supplier interaction. Where EDI simply allowed data exchange, SOA is instead a true collection of self-contained services that communicate with each other and do not depend on the context or state of the other service. An example could be a manufacturer who uses a Web service to gather the stock levels of its independent sales agents or an accounting package using the Web service

of a governmental revenue agency. The service can be a full blown application such as stock control or shipping system allowing a company to outsource the non-core parts of the business to a third party but still maintain control and visibility of the information systems that are essential for smooth operation of the business. A SOA service can pass the relevant XML schema so that all systems are able to interact based on the access level that each organisation requires or is assigned by the service owner. An organisation must choose the supply chain management software depending on whether or not is their business prepared to adopt business processes that meet the service-oriented market that the world is moving towards. Businesses that want to succeed need to evaluate whether they can break the rigid chain and instead construct a flexible supply web that the market is demanding. Craig Charlton is the senior vice president and general manager for Epicor Software.

Partnership enhances supply chain efficiency

I

Nk manufacturer, Flint Group, has moved from a closed loop system of using their own drums and tanks, and has partnered with CHEP Australia. This international collaboration between Flint Group and CHEP has resulted in shortening the supply chain from the Netherlands to Australia by up to two weeks. This was the first time Flint worked with CHEP boxes. The partnership has been beneficial as Flint got rid of double-handling. The boxes are filled at factory in Europe and go straight to customers in Australia. From an operational perspective the length of the supply chain has been shortlogisticsmagazine.com.au

ened by a week or two. Flint Netherlands ships close to 250 tonnes a month to Flint Australia’s customer. Once emptied, the boxes are returned to CHEP Lidcombe service centre for cleaning, and then relocated back directly into Flint Netherlands, reducing handling and transport. CHEP’s flexibility and behind-the-scenes cooperation across the global network was key in bringing the international deal together, Peter Gaddes, CHEP Australia senior business relationship manager for containers said. “The support of the international teams was critical to the success of this deal. Our teams across Australia, Europe and the US moved very

quickly to tackle the logistical challenge,” Flint Group is considering replicating the model in the US. November 2012 Logistics&MaterialsHandling | 29
