Ten ways to improve supply chain efficiency

A

recent survey has pinpointed ten game-changing supply chain trends that can help companies improve their operations. World-class companies need to revisit these trends on a regular basis to stay abreast in today’s dynamic and rapidly changing environment, the report said. “We define game-changing trends as those trends that meet two basic criteria of being extremely impactful on a firm’s economic profit and shareholder value, as well as very difficult to implement successfully,” the report stated. Companies must also be open to considering new challenges, such as the application of business analytics to big data and cloud-based applications. The Game-Changing Trends in Supply Chain survey was conducted by the University of Tennessee (UT) and sponsored by Ernst & Young. UT supply chain management faculty surveyed 163 supply chain professionals from 132 global companies to develop the list. Companies surveyed ranged in size of revenue from US$75 million to US$500 million. Fiftynine percent of the participants surveyed were manufacturers, 26 percent were retailers, and 14 percent were service providers. The study highlights some of the latest trends that companies must consider as they look to the future. The ten trends addressed in the survey are: 1. Customer relationship management Leading companies are successfully segmenting their products and customers and developing tailored supply chain solutions for each segment. This approach allowed one firm to eliminate nearly half (48 per cent) of its inventory while still improving on-shelf availability from 96 per cent to nearly 100 per cent. 2. Collaborative relationships A win-win collaboration between supplier and customer may be rare, but it can produce amazing results. These collaborations should be built on a foundation of common metrics, shared benefits, and trust. OfficeMax collaborated with its supplier Avery Dennison to dramati6 | Logistics&MaterialsHandling September 2013

cally increase revenue by more than 22 per cent, achieve product availability to more than 99 per cent, significantly decrease inventory by 34 per cent, and save more than $11 million in logistics costs. 3. Transformational strategy Only 16 per cent of firms have a documented multiyear supply chain strategy, yet developing these strategies can produce spectacular results. Whirlpool used a transformational strategy to deliver record-high service levels while decreasing inventory levels by over US$100 million and logistics costs by US$20 million. “To achieve a competitive advantage firms must coordinate operations with suppliers and customers to achieve a level of agility beyond that of competitors,” the report stated. 4. Process integration Of great concern to supply chain organisations is the functional silos that still exist and disrupt supply chain performance. One opportunity that can have tremendous impact is integrating purchasing and logistics. Although both functions are traditional supply chain functions, the research confirmed significant payback when these two areas align their objectives and operating plans. 5. Driver-based metrics Simply changing the performance measurement and goal-setting systems inside a firm can greatly enhance the overall performance of the supply chain. Procter & Gamble applied this concept and dramatically increased customer

service levels, market share, and sales. “Good supply chain leaders should always ask themselves if their metrics have been designed with the right cross-functional accountabilities in place,” the report stated. 6. Information sharing and visibility Firms are changing the game by sharing and linking together masses of information from multiple sources (also referred to as big data) and interpreting the data using business analytics expertise. 7. Demand management No one buys a company’s stock because of the company’s ability to forecast. Yet increasing forecasting accuracy along with integrating the demand and supply functions across the supply chain can drive higher revenue, lower working capital, and decrease costs. Leading companies are leveraging big data and new approaches to better forecast demand. 8. Talent management Talent management is the number one requirement for transforming a supply chain. Critical competencies in hiring top supply chain talent include global orientation, leadership and business skills, and technical savvy. “A talent plan is an essential part of the strategy to drive supply chain excellence,” the report stated. But more than just finding the right person, the study said companies must ‘sell the opportunity’ to the candidate better and then ‘aggressively develop that talent’. 9. Virtual integration One of the fundamentals of a great supply chain is for a company to stick to what it does well—its core competencies—and leave the rest to worldclass service providers. When outsourcing, firms should create a win-win vested outsourcing framework with its service providers. 10. Value-based management Supply chain excellence is the key to creating shareholder value. On average, the supply chain controls 100 per cent of the inventory, manages 60 to 70 per cent of cost of goods sold, and provides the foundation to generate revenue by delivering outstanding availability. logisticsmagazine.com.au

New suspension options

enhance safety and cost advantages for vehicle operators

A

dvances in safety-enhancing supplementary suspension systems are helping owners of hard working fleet and contractor vehicles throughout Australia to overcome the challenges posed by their widely varying workloads. Air suspensions and air helper suspensions – and, most recently, fit-and-forget microcellular polyurethane Load-Up Helper Kits – have greatly expanded owners choices when augmenting ute, van, 4WD and work vehicle suspensions called on to cope with heavy and uneven loads, widely varying sites and roads, and towing trailers and caravans. “It’s a fact that trades, fleet, delivery farm vehicles, for example, are being called on to carry even more varied loads at exactly the same time as employers are insisting on even more rigorous safety standards,” said Richard Clamp, managing director of Airbag Man, a manufacturer and supplier of air suspension products for the commercial and industrial markets. “Many new vehicles are also dual purpose, serving as a workhorse during the week and towing boats, caravans and trailers at the weekend when they revert to being a family vehicle. That can give their original suspension a real workout,” he said. In addition to bolstering a vehicle’s ability to cope with heavy, varying and unevenly distributed loads (including tanks, tools, generators, compressors and trailers) easily adjustable air and air helper suspensions help prevent sagging, twisting, and premature wear of the suspension and chassis of 2WD and 4WD utilities, light and medium trucks, pickup vehicles, SUVs and vans. Safety advantages are clear: with air-leveled vehicles achieving steering and braking benefits through evenly poised vehicles that corner flat and true, don’t dive dangerously under braking and don’t sag and drag in the tail under towing. “Such has been the demand for air and air helper suspensions that we now produce professionally engineered kits for hundreds of 10 | Logistics&MaterialsHandling September 2013

vehicles, ranging upwards from simple selfinstalled kits that are installed by owners and pumped up like a tyre to respond to varying loads. “Some owners – particularly fleet owners – like to have us fit in-cab controls so drivers can quickly and safely adjust for load and road conditions without having to get out of their seat. Other owners prefer us to fit full pure air systems for the ultimate benefits in ride, safety and performance,” Clamp explained. But even though fleet managers and private owners alike have grown to understand and widely adopt air and air helper suspension, there has until now been a market segment that current after-market suspensions have not addressed. That market is for a totally no-maintenance “fit and forget” supplementary suspension to suit fleet or individual owners with widely varying load and safety issues - but who do not need or want the flexibility of fully adjustable air suspensions that can be adjusted day to

day, or month to month, and flexibly varied to optimally suit changing operating conditions. For such operators, an expanding range of Load-Up helper spring kits has been introduced that need no inflation or ongoing pressure checks by drivers. Rather than the tough inflatable Firestone airbags employed in other Airbag Man products, Load-Up kits use a non-inflated microcellular polyurethane material specifically developed for automotive use. The new easily installed range of Load-Up Helper Kits – each tailored for no-drilling installation on all major ranges of 2WD and 4WD leaf sprung vehicles – are ideal for many load management and safety applications in fleet, workplace and private-use vehicles because they are custom-engineered to provide a ‘no-fuss - simply fit and forget’ option. “Such operators may be functioning in extremely remote situations, or with limited staff, workshop or driver time available to cope with anything beyond their immediate tasks in hand. Often, different drivers may be used in different vehicles who may be unfamiliar with its particular suspension needs,” Clamp said. “Sometimes operators simply wish to avoid any ongoing maintenance requirements while gaining proven cost-efficiencies through supplementing and protecting their vehicles’ suspensions.” In addition to reducing suspension fatigue and maintenance costs by assisting the factory suspension, Load-Up kits have major driver benefits in reducing the chance of bottoming out and enhancing braking performance through better vehicle stability under load. Kits are adjustable for varied spring geometry and stiffness combinations and for individual loading requirements using spacers provided. The kits reduce spring deflection over a wide range of loads. “Load-Up kits complement the extensive ranges of adjustable air suspensions advocated by Airbag Man as an ultimate solution to safety and load handling issues,” Clamp said. logisticsmagazine.com.au

ecruiting experts Hays Logistics has listed operation managers, demand planners and transport supervisors as currently being in demand in Australia’s logistics market. Tim James, senior regional director of Hays Logistics observes that the gloss has worn off the resources and mining sector as the country moves away from a two-speed economy to a system of micro-economies that are creating pockets of employment opportunities. The report said structural change aimed at increasing productivity was a driving factor behind the demand in jobs in the logistics sector. According to the Hays Quarterly Hotspots list, demand exists for the L M 0 9 1skilled 3 _ 0professionals 0 0 _ I N T in1 following

Operations managers with the ability to not only manage the business operationally, but also improve operational efficiencies and save money are being sought by employers. Demand planners with strong people skills are in demand. Typically planners possess strong analytical skills, however with S&OP taking a major step forward over recent years, planners who can interact well across the business are now required. Springing into action with a rubber solution An innovative rubber design is helping better support crushing equipment.

O

ne of the problems with metal coil springs supporting crushing and screening equipment is compression set. The term means that some springs get tired over their lifetime and can settle, or set, suffering permanent compression by up to 27 per cent below their original design height. This means they don’t perform to their original specifications. Such wear can make the vibrating equipment they support potentially unstable and prone to breakages, because spring set doesn’t always happen evenly, and can affect different springs under different parts of a screen or crusher to a different extent. One side may become more worn than another, for example, affecting dynamic stability, imposing uneven loads and even leading to breakages and production interruptions. The problem is compound by the springs often being in the most inaccessible parts of machinery where workers have to crawl around in confined spaces, leading to delays and OH and S issues. Marsh Mellow springs from Firestone, distributed throughout Australia by Air Springs Supply Pty Ltd, aim to alleviate excessive spring set and breakages in a number of applications by using rubber. Marsh Mellows are in use worldwide in applications such as shaker screens, crushing equipment, vibrating bins and other vibrating equipment used in applications including food processing, manufacturing, materials handling, quarries, mineral processing and primary product processing. “While no one spring design is ideal for all applications, Marsh Mellows offer considerable advan14 | Logistics&MaterialsHandling September 2013

tages over both conventional coils and solid rubber springs for many tasks,” said Air Springs Supply national sales and marketing manager James Maslin. They operate silently with more spring travel and greater load capacities than conventional coil springs. Maslin said they can’t break, splinter or fragment like a metal spring and one of their big advantages is that they suffer only a maximum of 7 per cent compression set over the life of the part. This means they can be changed in and out of different sets of springs without upsetting the dynamic balance of the whole set. Cylindrical Marsh Mellow springs are constructed of a solid rubber core with a hollow centre and several plies of fabric-reinforced rubber as an outer cover. The plies provide the springs with stability as well as a consistent cylindrical shape. The spring’s components (rubber, bias plies, size of centre) are combined in different ways to meet specific load and performance requirements (such as those of crushing and screening equipment). This gives them great flexibility and precision, said Maslin.

Vibration isolation “Another of the big pluses of Marsh Mellows is that they offer constant vibration isolation with changing loads. Their variable spring rate allows for a nearly constant natural frequency under the impact of such loads,” Maslin said. “And because of the Marsh Mellows’ greater deflection capabilities – and the load-carrying influences of the fabric reinforcement - it can carry a greater load when compared to a solid rubber part of

the same modulus and dimensions.” Maslin said their ability to maintain a cylindrical shape while supporting greater loads means a smaller overall size can be used compared with an all-rubber springs of identical load capacity. This is important when considering an application with a small design envelope. Marsh Mellow Die Springs can also be compressed by up to 40 per cent of their free height at a cycling rate of 50 cycles per minute (cpm) or less. Cycling rates of up to 300 cpm can be attained.

Increased stability, reduced downtime Rubber is an incompressible fluid which will flow to the path of least resistance. This means that as a Marsh Mellow’s height compresses, the fabric-reinforced rubber plies pantograph and the diameter grows. This supports the rubber core laterally, even at 30-40 per cent compression. The springs’ flexibility also helps eliminate downtime and potential damage to machinery. When a coil springs fails, it will often crack, allowing fragments of the coil to damage equipment. This problem is eliminated with the rubber construction of the springs. logisticsmagazine.com.au

When Size Does Matter:

Overcoming the Problem of Incorrectly Specified Conveyor Rollers

T

o the untrained, a small variation in the length or diameter of a conveyor roller may seem insignificant, but the effect of installing the wrong size roller can ultimately be quite devastating structurally and costly to operations. Neil Kinder, CEO of Kinder, explained that “if correctly done, modifying the roller supports to accommodate the length of the roller may allow the new roller to be installed and operate properly. But what happens the next time this roller is replaced? If the same part isn’t supplied, a sloppy or incorrect fit may result in incorrect belt tracking and other potentially major high maintenance problems”. “Whereas correctly specified conveyor rollers L Ominimise 0 7 1 3 _downtime, 0 0 0 _ Hreduce A K . maintenance pdf Pa ge will labour costs and reduce the often hidden

additional costs associated with lost product. Also, correctly specifying conveyor rollers means more than just supplying “rough measurements”. Providing an accurately measured roller length to a supplier can be the difference between a quick installation and a long maintenance shut down and this difference in operational efficiency can be measured in financial terms. “Conveyor belt tracking is arguably one of the most common headaches for conveyor maintenance engineers and accurately specifying the correct diameter of a conveyor roller can eliminate one potential cause of this problem. Again, with so many options available “rough measurements” will lead to the wrong diameter 1roller 1 5being / 0 5supplied, / 1 3 , so 2accurate : 5 9 : measurement 3 8 PM AEST of the diameter is essential.

D

ematic, the manufacturer of ColbyRACK storage solutions, recently

helped ACFS Port Logistics to fit out its new distribution centre (DC) in Melbourne in record time.

Within just five weeks of receiving the order, Dematic had completed the production and installation of a massive 25,000 pallet capacity storage system at ACFS’ new DC in Derrimut in Melbourne’s western suburbs. Dematic’s regional sales manager for storage equipment, Rod Brooks, said the project was one of the most demanding the company had manufactured and installed. “ACFS is a rapidly growing specialist 3PL servicing some of Australia’s largest retailers, and its success in recent years is very much down to its ‘can-do’ attitude,” Brooks said. “So when it recently won a contract to support the expansion of a new national hardware business in Australia, ACFS needed to move quickly to expand its DC network. “ACFS’ challenge to Dematic was how can you best utilise the space in our new DC, and how quickly can you help get us up and running? “We presented a range of options before settling on a solution that optimised the cube within the 16,000 sqm DC by closely following the facility’s roofline profile,” he said. “This resulted in a ColbyRACK pallet storage solution that features over 20 different elevations and accommodates a range of pallet heights from 600 mm up to 1.4 m. “Space-efficiency within the DC is optimised through the widespread 16 | Logistics&MaterialsHandling September 2013

use of double-deep ColbyRACK, with a top pallet beam level of around 10m. Storage flexibility is also optimised,” said Brooks “with every location capable of storing the heaviest pallets, which means ACFS can put any pallet anywhere in the system”. Dematic’s extensive project management experience helped make sure ACFS could commence operations at the new DC asap. “We basically worked around the clock for several weeks to manufacture the ColbyRACK, and put a lot of effort into co-ordinating the transport, delivery and progressive installation of the equipment when it reached Melbourne,” Brooks said. “The transport requirements alone were a significant logistics exercise, with the process requiring more than 40 B-double semi-trailers to ship the racks from our factory in Sydney to Melbourne,” he said. “We were on site within two weeks of receiving the order and, as soon as the ColbyRACK components started arriving in Melbourne, we began erecting the system,

starting at one end of the DC and progressively handing sections over to ACFS so it, in turn, could start bringing stock into the DC from its Port of Melbourne container terminal. “From receiving the order to handing over the final bays of racking, we actually completed the project in just over a month, which is remarkable given the scale and complexity of the solution,” Brooks said. ColbyRACK storage solution features A feature of the space-efficient ColbyRACK storage solution is the use of double deep rack beams with heavy-duty welded cleats to support the guide rails that assist the safe placement of pallets in double deep storage systems. “The guide rails in double deep storage systems, especially those in higher bays, take a fair bit of punishment over the course of their working life and our use of heavy-duty welded cleats with bolted connections, compared to the Tek-screwed connections many

other suppliers use, provides a significantly stronger and safer solution,” Brooks explained. “Many people think there is little difference between storage systems, but that is akin to saying all cars are the same. Our locally designed and manufactured ColbyRACK systems are the result of more than 40 years experience in providing storage solutions throughout Australia,” he said. “The combination of our exclusive Colby RACKMAN software, our experienced team of specialist structural engineers, including Dr Murray Clarke BSc BE PhD MIEAust, and our ISO9001 quality-assured manufacturing facilities ensure customers receive the highest quality products and the optimum solution for their business.” ACFS Managing Director, Arthur Tzaneros, said he had been very impressed by Dematic’s ability and commitment to delivering the job in such a short timeframe. “Dematic’s storage design team certainly presented the most space-efficient option and its local manufacturing capacity enabled it to meet our demanding start-up schedule for the project,” said Tzaneros. “This is the first time we have worked with Dematic and we have been very impressed by the quality of its service, solution and equipment. “The racking is well designed and the quality of manufacture is first class.” Following the success of the Melbourne project, ACFS also contracted Dematic to supply ColbyRACK for part of a new DC in Sydney. logisticsmagazine.com.au

CALIDUS Total Logistics Software Launches in Australia OBS Logistics has launched its CALIDUS Total Logistics Software System into the Australian market to help third party logistics services companies and wholesale/distribution businesses increase the efficiency of their transport and warehouse operations.

C

ALIDUS Total Logistics is a comprehensive logistics operational system and includes warehouse management, transport planning and execution, collection and delivery management and supply chain tracking to helps optimise complex distribution networks by managing orders, inventory and labour from a single or multiple control centres. The solution is provided with the option of a traditional implementation at the client’s premises or using a SaaS approach where companies looking to take advantage of lower upfront investment costs can select from a range of managed service options that combine the benefits of cloud computing with the reassurance of a secure hosting facility owned and managed by OBS Logistics. OBS Logistics works with some of the leading names in logistics across the world and the move into Australia represents the next step in the expansion of its customer base across the globe. Chief of OBS Logistics, Dave Renshaw, said launching into the Australian market represented a key milestone for the software provider. “Our launch into the Australian market is an exciting move for OBS Logistics. Our CALIDUS Total Logistics suite has been extremely well received here such that we have already secured business, which has led to us establishing ourselves in the region to grow our business further ,”Renshaw said. Whether their customer is a logistics company operating contracts for a number of clients, or an in-house logistics operation working on a dedicated base, CALIDUS Total Logistics’ provides a range of features for differing application. The fully integrated system was developed using the latest technologies to provide the flexibility needed to respond to the changing needs of the industry and includes features such as electronic proof of delivery, rail container management and voice directed picking. Stephen McCartney, head of global business development for OBS said the products had been

Features include the ability to synchronise locations and resource master data, download the manifest and trip plan to the in-cab system and the transmittance of execution data including arrival and departure times and locations. While management level monitoring capabilities and KPI monitoring are also available.

well received in Australia as more companies looked for ways to improve the way they operate. “We are finding that there is a real hunger for products which will allow organisations to improve visibility across the whole operation and supply chain, to improve productivity by bringing their organisations onto one platform, but also to be outward looking at customers not just to offer tracking but seeking to offer add services which are supported by systems processes rather than simply pushing more human resource,” McCartney said. McCartney said CALIDUS is a suite of products which can be deployed as required allowing customers to address specific business needs. Optimisation and Planning CALDIUS TMS not only plans vehicle trips, but optimises them to make better use of driver miles and reduce empty running miles. Facilities within the software allow for dynamic routing and scheduling through postcode driven routing, calculation of planned arrival and departure times for each trip to stop meet order windows and support for back loading. While further efficiencies can be found in the allocation of drivers, tractors and trailers to trips, the analysis of collections, deliveries on the same trip and vehicle limit checks during load builds. In-Cab Communications The software provides interfacing in-cab systems and is being used in conjunction with a number of different third party in-cab solutions as well as OBS Logistics’ own EPOD solu-

Execution of Trips The software is able to manage the execution of trips from loading and dispatch through to final proof of delivery. Comprehensive information on the outcome of each collection and delivery captures vehicle check information as well as the collection of information from in-cab systems. The recording of time sensitive information such as start, stop, waiting and adherence to booking slots is also available, to ensure efficiency is maintained at all times and any issues can be quickly solved. Pallet and Equipment Tracking Tracking the pallet and equipment is essential in minimising the high cost of losses. CALIDUS is able to define equipment by type and capture quantity and types of equipment delivered and collected at each stop point. Further, the software provides even greater security with its ability to stock balances of pallets and equipment by type for each depot, pick up and drop point. Billing Facilities With an interface connected to businesses internal financial systems, the billing facilities provided represent further productivity gains. Companies are able to bill based on plans, however any changes made during execution will also be reflected in the billing. Miscellaneous invoicing is also available for ad hoc invoices, while invoice production with the option to email via distribution lists is also available. Enerpac UNIVERSAL CRANES A high precision Enerpac SyncHoist system has been successfully deployed by heavy lift and transport specialists Universal Cranes to ensure accuracy and safety in the hoisting and positioning of key components of one of the largest ships ever built for the Royal Australian Navy. The Enerpac System - deployed by Universal Cranes for the Landing Helicopter Deck (LHD) vessel project– is being introduced to Australasia to enhance crane performance and safety in diverse heavy lift projects including construction, engineering, hydraulics, mining and energy, oil and gas, manufacturing and metal fabrication and shipbuilding. Employing intelligent hydraulics to monitor and guide compact but powerful 700 bar double-acting push-pull cylinders integrated into four lifting points above loads, the SyncHoist SLS system can be used for pre-programmed positioning, tilting and aligning of loads and for counterweighting and determining their centre of gravity. “The SyncHoist allowed a gradual lift of the load, and dynamic adjustment in relation to the centre of gravity during the lift,” Universal Cranes heavy lift engineer Nick Morris said.

Smart Storage Solutions! SCHAEFER Selective Pallet Racking SSI Schaefer Interlock 600 selective racking system enables product to be placed and removed without interfering with other pallets & a wide variety of versatile configurations can be achieved. Schaefer racking is manufactured to meet AS4084-1993 & the European standard FEM 10.2.02. If you are thinking of sourcing elsewhere, you should ensure the supplier meets these standards.

SCHAEFER SCHAEFER LogiMat® Vertical Storage Device

A LogiMat® storage lift is comparable to an oversized drawer cabinet with two stacks of trays (one in the front and one in the rear). Between those stacks operates a lift, which pulls out individual trays as required and delivers them to the service window opening that follows the ‘goods-to-man’ principle. Warehouse staff, remove the picked goods easily, at an ergonomic height with no operator stress. Step less, height adjustable access openings and incline devices on the trays for the ergonomically correct removal of goods are just two examples from the fully-equipped storage package.

With the use of galvanised mesh panels or MDF boards with board supports, Schaefer pallet racking can be conveniently converted to high capacity shelving. With the addition of roller beds, carton live storage is possible at the bottom of the racks.

LogiMat® consists of two tiers of trays and a lift that retrieves individual trays delivering them to the service window

Over the last 12 months, Polar Fresh has gone through a major period of change and growth with the implementation of fresh produce into the site. Although it started in October last year, the switch required a major change in business operations. It not only required doubling the number of team members and almost doubling the volume levels being moved through the site, but it also necessitated the physical expansion of the company’s site. This expansion took part in two parts, namely the construction of a new freezer chamber and a banana ripening room as an addition to the existing structure,

A-SAFE Polymer Safety Barriers Why is A-Safe so different?

Traffic Segregation / Wall and Machinery Protection

A-Safe barriers consist of specially formulated, MEMAPLEX, polymer-based material and components. Steel simply dents or crumples when a vehicle hits it. A-Safe barriers have inherent strength and structural memory allowing them to buckle on collision, dissipating impact forces and then springing back to the original state. There is the added bonus of sustaining little floor damage when impacted, greatly reducing the need for damage repairs, both to the barrier and to vehicles, offering minimal cost in maintenance charges, well below that of steel. The motor industry started fitting plastic bumpers to their vehicles years ago. A-Safe decided to use the same principle for their products, withoutstanding results.

Safety first Although they are flexible, A-Safe Barriers are extremely strong. They effectively protect your workforce, machinery, buildings and vehicles. All products are designed to meet the most stringent Health & Safety guidelines and are load tested to British Standards, which exceed Australian Standards by a factor of three.

On impact Barrier bends as vehicle hits it.

Traffic and Pedestrian Segregation

Traffic Plus Barrier

After impact Barrier returns to original shape, thanks to built-in memory.

Colouring your views A-Safe Barriers feature a yellow and black colour scheme as standard, which enables both pedestrians and drivers to see at a glance where they should be and where they shouldn’t be. These colours are solid and highly resistant to scratching too, so no repainting is required. Some barrier options such as the A-Safe Armco range are available in grey.
