AE Smith’s ‘Commitment to Zero Harm’ ue to AE Smith & Son’s high losttime injury frequency rate (LTIFR), the company insisted on implementing a safety program. Approximately 700 of its employees are engaged in construction and service projects across 2,000 sites in Australia. In 2005, the company’s high lost-time injury frequency rate was 56.1 and as a result, a ‘Commitment to Zero Harm’ program was initiated. Danny O’Reilly, national safety officer of AE Smith, sought the advice of a number of external safety experts. He also decided to replace the variety of spreadsheets that were being used to record safety data with Salvus, a leading Australian safety, risk and claims management software system developed by ComOps. The software offered adherence to standards such as AS/NZS ISO 31000 for hazard identification and risk assessment; it also contained functionality for other critical areas such as incident

management, injury management, plant and equipment asset registers and maintenance records. “We wanted to look for trends and processes across the business, to identify opportunities to change. Then we needed to measure that change to see if we were succeeding,” said O’Reilly. The ‘Commitment to Zero Harm’
Online safety training to change attitude of apprentices People and Quality Solutions (PaQs), a registered training organisation, has launched a new online safety course to change the attitudes of apprentices. Young people are almost one-and-a-half times more likely to be injured at work than the average worker, and the statistics show that more than 70% of these cases occur within the first year of employment, according to PaQS. The course has evolved from the original, a competency-based course in Advanced Safety Awareness (ASA). The ASA course has been designed and developed to fit into safety induction programs for trainees and apprentices. The course is designed to develop young workers’ attitude towards safety, as well as their confidence and self esteem. According to PaQS senior psychologist and founder, Carl Reams, the PaQS ethos is founded on a new theory of personal safety management in Australia, targeting human error by

program kicked-off with presentations to all staff in Australia, with messaging pointing-out the importance to comply with safety legislation, and ensure a good safety record to the company's construction industry partners. “At the end of each presentation we gave attendees a Zero Harm notebook, and asked people to commit to one or two safety-related things that they themselves could control and commit to,” said O’Reilly. “Since our first Zero Harm presentation, we've gone from a lost-time injury frequency rate of 56 in 2005, to just one of four in the whole of 2010, and we have a system that keeps us on-track with instantaneous notifications and a real-time reporting dashboard for our KPI and LTI information,” said O’Reilly. “We want to eliminate human damage, not just reduce it. That's our real zero harm quest.” AE Smith & Son 1300 313 313, www.aesmith.com.au

Companies fined due to lack of fall prevention building and roofing company have been fined a total of $10,000 for failing to provide fall prevention measures for workers on a building site, according to WorkSafe WA. Boutique Building Company and Western Metal Roofing both pleaded guilty to failing to provide edge protection when there was a risk that a person could fall three metres or more. Both companies were fined $5,000 in the Rockingham Magistrates Court. According to WorkSafe WA, the incident occurred in 7 January 2009, when Boutique Building Company contracted Western Metal Roofing to install the roof at the workplace. A WorkSafe inspector attended the site
A
and observed three roof plumbers working on the roof of the building, without any form of edge protection or fall prevention system, exposing them to the risk of a fall of around 6.5 metres. Acting WorkSafe commissioner Lex McCulloch said that falls were almost always preventable by having safe systems of work in place. “It’s disappointing to hear about safe systems of work for fall prevention not being in place,” McCulloch said. “Fortunately there were no falls on this site despite the lack of fall protection, but the potential was there and the risk should not have been taken.” WorkSafe WA 08 9327 8777, www.worksafe.wa.gov.au

Safety relays suit varying applications Rockwell Automation is introducing its ‘next generation’ of safety relays, designed for most industrial safety applications. Six new products are available in the range, offering a universal input feature allowing devices such as safety-interlock switches, emergency-stop switches, pressure-sensitive mats and OSSD
devices – such as safety light curtains – to use the same set of terminals. Simple logic tasks can also be achieved via the single wire safety connection between relays. This simple, one-wire link uses transistor technology and monitoring via dynamic signals. This removes the need for dual-channel connection and offers SIL 3, PLe safety rating, Rockwell says. With this logic functionality, applications can be configured to offer flexible ‘AND/OR’ functional control. Other options can be configured for requirements such as regional and global e-stop functions.
The relays offer a universal input for connecting related safety devices including safety light curtains.
