MINING SAFETY
Grease protection for miners and others
“A
bit of grease never hurt anyone” is untrue, and commonly used grease and lubricants are capable of causing health complications ranging from contact dermatitis up to those more serious problems, including a variety of cancers. Engineering oil and the oily liquids used in machine maintenance aren’t harmless. They are chemicals, and the chemical reaction they cause can harm workers. Oil is a combination of many substances, including powerful neurotoxins which can cause a range of symptoms from nausea, to dizziness. These symptoms are signs the nervous system is being damaged. Sadly, not every worker always wears proper protection. “Even on sites where it’s mandatory for gloves to be worn, many workers take them off, thinking that this will improve

their dexterity,” said Ansell marketing manager, David Nicholls. Oil, dust and small, sharp pieces of debris can be a nasty combination when they come into contact with exposed skin. “The Ansell AlphaTec®58-430 and 58435 gloves address the need for protection
Mining safety product vending machine 3M has launched a new mining product vending machine to help control inventory and increase onsite productivity. 3M Vending Solutions offer companies a method to dispense essential products on site, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “Our machines can be configured to dispense a variety of products, including personal protective equipment (PPE), industrial, electrical, office and healthcare consumables – everything from protective eyewear, grinding discs and respirators to first aid supplies,” said Gary Watsford, 3M Personal Safety Division Business Manager. This type of controlled vending is ideal for mining, oil and gas, construction, manufacturing, automotive body repair shops and many other workplaces. Said Watsford, “3M Vending
Solutions offer customers a variety of cost savings including: controlled distribution and usage of PPE and industrial consumables by eliminating product waste and unauthorised usage, reduction in procurement and inventory costs and the ability to identify contractors so that companies then have the option to back charge.” Automated, customised product usage reports can be used for inventory management, budgeting, and operation and production reviews. These machines also protect consumables from dust and damage and assist with PPE compliance. 3M vending machines can hold PPE including eyewear, respirators, earplugs, earmuffs, and protective coveralls.

Simple safety solution for longstanding dilemma in underground mines LEUSSINK has met calls for increased safety in a long-time problem area for the underground mining sector. The company designed and manufactured an effective solution all but eliminates danger from falling roof mounts that fix hydraulics systems. “It all centred around the susceptibilities of a small lever that activates hydraulic power in the process needed to fix roof bolts, yet the traditional position of the control lever made it a potential trigger for accidents,” Leussink director, Jason Leussink, said A solution to keep the lever where it normally is but to better ensure the safety of workers was heightened. Leussink engineered a new design adding a “safety lever”. Leussink Engineering 1300 187 796 www.leussink.com.au

new 5000 kN hydraulic lifting gantry is being introduced by Enerpac to deliver industry-best standards of safety and stability when lifting heavy loads to heights exceeding 12 metres. The MBL5000 lifting gantries – the latest product in the company’s integrated solutions’ portfolio – are engineered to operate in confined areas with roller track self-propulsion reducing the footprint load of the gantry by more than 50 per cent compared with regular steel wheels. The MBL5000s combine and extend upon product features that Enerpac introduced with the SBL series of gantry lifters already widely proven in lifting heavy plant, machinery and components in applications such as mining and energy developments, oil and gas plants, bridges and civil engineering and ports and infrastructure. Richard Verhoeff, Enerpac Integrated Solutions Manager for Australasia, said “To expand safety factors to previously unachievable levels, Enerpac decided to design the new MBL5000 gantry to provide the safety and performance standard of the future.
Full extended height of 12,800mm and 5000kN lifting capacity over entire stroke.
“To put safety and performance first and foremost, all features such as self-propelled tracks and wireless fully controlled synchronisation systems are
therefore included as standard.” Enerpac 1300 198 007 www.enerpac.com/en-au
Customised work station OPTIMUM Handling Solutions’ custom work station for abattoirs and food processing plants will greatly assist operators when constantly sorting or packing products onto pallets that are over 1.5m high. Optimum’s innovative palletising work stations usually consist of an elevated work platform, electric scissor lift tables, and a belt top conveyor system that can provide the ultimate solution for easy carton/ product removal from stillages and conveyors that are to be packed onto pallets in the load out areas. Scissor lift tables can be primarily implemented within the raised work station allowing the operators to pick product from the crate/stillage/conveyor quickly and efficiently. This can be done without the constant workplace hazard of bending and stretching that is usually related to product handling. The common load-out conveyor system continually feeds the finished products to the packing operator which picks and loads products onto pallets which are raised up on Optimums ever so popular

Barriers provide pedestrian protection THERE are regular reports across Australia of incidents where vehicles have crashed into construction zones, bus stops, pavement cafes and retail shop windows. Protecting lives from potential injury or death is paramount for all authorities so after each of these incidents, there is an investigation into whether or not it could have been prevented. One way to prevent out of control vehicles crashing into work zones or pedestrian areas is to erect a barrier which affords protection but does not restrict everyday activities on, or adjacent to, a road. Some common types of barrier, such as precast concrete sections or waterfilled plastic units, provide inadequate protection and in some cases increase damage and injury to drivers and pedestrians. The Omni Stop Bollard is an energy-absorbing bollard, the only one of its type in Australia. It has been extensively crash-tested with impacts up to 60 km/hour and complies with the requirements of AS/NZS3845:1999 Table 5.3.3(3). The Omni Stop Bollard permits access for workers to a construction zone or pedestrians to a shopping precinct while at the same time preventing vehicle penetration. Aussie safety showers contribute to world’s largest aluminium project ENWARE AUSTRALIA, the country’s leading supplier of stainless steel emergency safety showers, has made its largest export delivery to date, to the $US 10.8 billion Ma’aden aluminium complex in Saudi Arabia. Enware has delivered more than 700 of its Australian designed and manufactured emergency safety showers along with associated safety equipment to Korean based Design, Construct and Engineering company Hyundai for Ma’aden’s joint venture with Alcoa, which from this year will become the largest and most efficient vertically integrated aluminium complex in the world. The tough, reliable and technically advanced Enware safety equipment will be used at diverse locations throughout the Ma’aden project, which will use Saudi Arabia’s bauxite resources to profitably produce aluminium for domestic and international markets as well as to facilitate the development of domestic downstream industries in the Kingdom. Ma’aden envisages production at an annual mining rate of 4.0 million tons a year of bauxite. Enware Australia Managing Director Mr Adam Degnan said the supply of the custom-designed safety technology to Hyundai is a vote of confidence that could lead to further export
“Am I Compliant?” initiative TRANSTECH, transport compliance and mobility solutions specialist, has launched Am I Compliant – a website focused on spreading knowledge about compliance, regulation, technology and safety to the transport and logistics industry. What is compliance? Why should I comply? The Am I Compliant focuses on the responsibilities involved with complying to fatigue management, speed management, mass management and vehicle maintenance laws and regulations. Am I Compliant is designed to educate transport operators and their team of managers, supervisors, staff, drivers and the general public. It discusses compliance and what it means, what it entails, what can affect it and how the benefits can be felt through the transport chain. A negative connotation is placed on heavy vehicles and the industry in the public eye – often branded as “monster trucks”. The website allows for a better understanding to help create a positive company atmosphere – allowing senior management to rethink their compliance efforts and prove that their operation is having a positive impact. “We wanted to create a way that anyone can find out the right facts about compliance, the responsibility it entails and safety,” said Andrew Rossington, CEO, Transtech. “The Chain of Responsibility (CoR) governs operational ethics and morality; we want the public to know that the Australian transport and logistics industry is one of the most forward thinking in the world.” Visit www.amicompliant.com.au to discover about compliance, technology and safety. WASTE HANDLING
Australian manufacturer with new recycling solution A random challenge thrown at a prominent Australian engineering/ manufacturing SME has seen an innovative crossover develop for its business and in the process launched a completely new direction for the company. Leussink, based in the NSW Illawarra region and a growing exporter of product and services, has merged its manufacturing capability with the widespread need for community recycling. What transpired is Leussink Global Worming – the manufacture of customised compost worm farms for any level of compost management – be it commercial, industrial or bulk domestic. “It all happened while our engineering business, in the act of diversification, was putting the finishing touches to an eight storey building in the centre of Wollongong, a site we were constructing for a tenant which happens to be the ATO,” said Leussink director, Jason Leussink. “With 400 tax office people and a few dozen more occupying the ground level retail shops, the building encompasses 6,600m2 of floor space and right from the start was destined to churn out vast amounts of waste. “The challenge to us, as the building proponent, was to raise its green star rating from 4-star to 5-star so we looked at all the traditional avenues for efficiency such as tighter control systems for air conditioners, better drapes for sunlight control, better performing light fittings et al – you name it we looked for it. Everywhere. Automatic. Safe.
It appears at first glance to be a totally normal city, but behind it lies the interaction of millions of perfectly compatible automation and safety components. They control the lifts we take; they regulate the trains on which we travel; they monitor the spaces in which we work; they drive the machines we operate. They automatically provide the safety we desire for ourselves, for our society and for future generations. And that’s a real comfort. Pilz – The 4-fold safety of automation. Technical, personal, environmental and economic.
