IVIL contractor Ertech has deployed Konecranes overhead cranes in its equipment maintenance facility at Wangara, Western Australia. According to the companies, the cranes will sets benchmarks in maintenance facility safety, and Ertech has also signed a maintenance agreement with Konecranes to service the units and undertake statutory inspections. The 5- and 10-tonne cranes will be used to service about 170 items of major plant, including scrapers, excavators, loaders, and bulldozers. Ertech delivers civil construction services for resources, infrastructure and land development clients, and caters to large mining projects. The 10-tonne overhead crane at Ertech has a 20-metre span, while the five-tonne crane, which straddles the automated welding bay, has a span of 9 metres. The cranes employ radio controls with the load display in the handset. Radio remotes mean safety for the operators, who can stand well away from the loads being lifted and shifted. The remotes also give freedom of movement, ensuring the operators can choose a position where they have the best view of the cranes and loads. Konecranes installed the cranes supplying and fitting the 50 x 25mm

crane rails welded to the top of I-beams that run the length of the workshop. A major benefit of the new cranes is the trolley travel inverter, a separate control that delivers smooth starts, acceleration and deceleration of the load, minimising load swing and enabling fast and accurate load positioning. KonecranesCXT and CXTS (singlegirder) cranes with individual hoist capacities up to 80 tonnes are designed to be industry benchmarks of safety and ergonomics, with easy and effective load handling and optimum dimensions for space saving solutions. The cranes have minimal headroom requirement, which is useful in applications where there are space constraints. The cranes are designed to eliminate unused or under-utilised square metres because the crane can operate closer to the walls and lift the load higher. An ergonomic hook design which makes rigging of the load safer, while the rope drum to rope diameter ratio is more than double that of conventional designs. Durable adjustment-free and dust-proof high performance brakes also ensure safety and bottom-line reliability. For special demanding applications the hoists can be equipped with a second brake. Fog maker kills dust problems Idrotech’s eLeFANte fog maker, available locally through tecpro Australia, is being used to combat dust problems at mine sites. the fog maker is used globally. In the shanxi province of china, for example, dust problems caused by a coal mine and associated road transport have led authorities to position seven of Idrotech’s eLeFANte fog makers at strategic points to suppress the potentially corrosive and toxic dust. the Italian-designed eLeFANte provides an effective method of controlling fugitive dust in mining environments. It works by shooting a strong, continuous plume of fine mist of fog up to 60 metres long. Air suspension leaf helper kits The increased towing and load carrying capacity of the new Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50 has inspired All Air Suspension’s new Air Suspension Rear Leaf Spring helper Kit. These supplementary suspension kits allow the driver to maintain the correct vehicle height, with no spring sag, even under a heavy load. “It is a bit of a trap for drivers new to towing, or carrying bigger loads, because a vehicle suspension that is perfectly good for normal lighter service can change markedly when it is more heavily loaded,” All Air Suspension’s general manager James Maslin said. The company claims the kits will also decrease tyre wear and more evenly distribute natural brake wear. Although the suspension kit doesn’t increase a vehicle’s load capacity it does improve both steering and handling of a vehicle which is typically compromised under a heavy load. Anti-tip truck body IT is not rare to see overbalanced haul trucks on site. The sudden weight of the load leaving the tray has been known to tip it backwards, making the truck stand up on its rear wheels. While it may seem like a funny occurrence, it causes serious damage; both to the truck, the driver, and the miner’s bottom line. And as long as the design of truck bodies remained the same, the issue remains a problem. With this issue in mind, Australian company Austin Engineering created a new haul truck body designed to give miners back control over their material flows. Speaking to Austin Engineering’s Joe Kelly, he explained that “it started when Peabody Energy came to us, as they found that when discharging their loads their trucks’ front wheels would come off the ground and damage suspension when coming down and putting an operators’ safety at risk”. The solution to this weighty issue was relatively simple: “[Austin Engineering’s subsidiary] Westech solved the problem by creating a new flow control body design,” Kelly said, adding that “the body goes up at an angle, and has multi-level kicks which work to create a pocket of material in the tray, so it stops all of the material flowing out in a single heavy load that slides out from the bottom”. He went on to say that “instead it now has a continual flow that starts from the material on the top, unloading it at the same speed as before, this not only negates the tipping risk the truck faced as it

In addition to reducing wear “the continual flow instead of a single material dump also reduces dust on site, increasing the mine’s green footprint,” he said. New flood monitoring system A co-operative partnership between three mining companies and the Queensland Department of Main Roads has seen a state-of-the-art new monitoring system installed on the Suttor Developmental Road in North Queensland to look out for floods. The road is a crucial link to mines owned by Rio Tinto, Xstrata Coal and Peabody Energy. The system, marketed by the Boylan Group as Boylan Eagle Eye, was installed in December last year to monitor Bee Creek and Peak Gully – two streams that cause major flooding across the road in times of high rainfall. The “no power, no wires” Australian invention enables live and archived vision and data to be accessed via a web browser from any location. Mackay-based DMR operations manager Christopher Herring said the ability to monitor the sites remotely in P a A D _ S F A E C MA R _ 1 3 . p d f real time saved time and resources.

The Australia invention is keeping a flood watch on a crucial transport link to three North Queensland mines. “In the past, we would have had to send someone out to check for flooding or debris across the road,” Herring said. “Now, we can see what’s going on ge 1 3 1 / 0 1 / 1 3 , 1 1 : 2 2 from our office,” he said.
RMTeK director Brendan Doyle – the technical support behind the Eagle Eye program – said the units had successfully monitored three flood events since they were installed. “Eagle Eye is a hugely powerful tool in helping keep the mines productive and the mining staff safe,” Mr Doyle said. “It also equates to substantial labour cost savings for the department,” he said. The system is efficient and simple to use, and keeps data costs to a minimum. All authorised users need is a computer or handheld device with a web browser to access live and archived vision and data, plus all device settings. The system’s weather sensor suite also measures – in real time – barometric pressure, humidity, precipitation, temperature, and wind speed and direction. A full range of environmental sensors is also available. Boylan Group, 0437 359 990 AM www.boylan.net.au

Managing fatigue
O
NE of the speakers at Safety In Action 2013 is Michael Adeney, whose organisation Fatigue Safety works with rail, road transport, manufacturing, emergency services, mining and energy, police, aviation, and even circuses to help mitigate their worker fatigue risks. According to Adeney, fatigue is a hidden problem for many workplaces: many businesses fail to acknowledge and understand it as a real safety issue, and as a result are at risk from often serious fatigue-related accidents. “The science on fatigue paints a compelling picture, but the message is not getting through,” Adeney told Safety First. Common knowledge within the fatigue management industry is that fatigue can impair people more than alcohol can. A person who wakes up at 8 o’clock after a good sleep will perform on par with someone with a blood alcohol level of 0.05 after 17 hours of being awake. Stretch the waking hours to 22 or 24 hours, and performance levels deteriorate to equivalent BAC of 0.1. “When people become dangerously fatigued, they tend to think they are OK,” Adeney said. “So relying on self-assessment for fatigue is inadequate as a strategy.” A key issue with fatigue is sleep. “Poor sleep is at epidemic levels,” Adeney said. “If you get 100 Aussies in a room, about 45 percent will have some sleeping problem. Of that, about 10-15 percent will have a sleep disorder, which is the red zone. Another 30 percent or so will be in the yellow zone.” For sleep disorders like sleep apnea, medical assistance is needed. But it is possible to improve sleep via behavioural strategies, weeding out factors which have a negative effect on sleep. Caffeine, for example, has a long half-life within the blood-stream. Having multiple cups of coffee a day can see caffeine remaining in the blood-stream 24/7, shaving 20 to 30 percent off a person’s sleep. Alcohol, which is often used to selfmedicate due to its ability to relax the
10
| Safety First | March 2013
muscles and quicken the onset of sleep, breaks the sleeping pattern, disturbing rest in the second half of the night. Adeney uses the defences-in-depth model to combat fatigue-related risks. This model consists of four stages, where the risk can be detected and resolved before an accident occurs. Level 1: Insufficient sleep due to shift scheduling factors. Solution: Inspect the shift structure and change it. Consider overtime and unplanned overtime. Level 2: Assessment of fatigue risk via a survey of the amount of sleep a worker has had in the last 48 hours. Solution: There are systems which allow risk assessment based on the amount of sleep a person has had. Level 3: Fatigue-related behaviours starting to show up at work.
Solution: Body signs such as double blinks, head nodding, forgetfulness, etc, are symptoms of fatigue. Staff can be educated to look out for such indicators. Level 4: Errors at work. Solution: Have systems in place to detect and manage mistakes such as forgetting to turn off taps, navigational errors, etc. Final level: Actual accidents Solution: A reactive system which investigates accidents and incidents to further refine future preventive solutions. Adeney says technology is not necessarily the solution to fatigue management. If a company knows the principles and priorities, it is possible to protect itself against fatigue without relying on expensive technology. Safety In Action, 1300 656 184 www.safetyinaction.net.au

Australian-made approach to fleets will boost safety The federal government’s move to encourage governments and businesses to purchase Australian-made cars for their fleets will boost efficiency and safety, claims Trimble. According to Trimble, while the plan provides stimulus for the Australian motor industry, it also encourages businesses to rethink the way in which they manage their fleets. Tom Scahill, Business Area Director, ANZ, Field Service Management,
Transport and Logistics Divisions, Trimble Navigation says the move will have positives for economy and safety. “It’s important for businesses operating fleets to not only invest in locallymanufactured cars, it’s also vital for them to be thinking of ways to achieve greater efficiency and improved levels of safety of their fleet operation,” said Scahill. Scahill claims the Australian fleet industry has not kept pace with new technologies that help them achieve higher
New safety legislation for SA 1 January 2013 saw new workplace safety legislation take effect in South Australia, bringing the state in line with most of Australia. The Work Health and Safety Act 2012 replaced the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act 1986. According to Robin Scott, A/Executive Director of SafeWork SA, the new laws are consistent with the old, familiar laws but provide a new approach that clarifies everyone’s roles in workplace safety. “South Australia has a strong safety record. In 2012 we were the only state to meet the national target for reducing work-related injuries,” Scott said.
“The new laws will help to further reduce workplace injury and will create avenues for solving safety issues, while ensuring that the same high standards of workplace safety will apply in all states and territories.” The WHS Act will also reduce red tape for businesses that operate across state borders and provide interstate workers with the same protections and safety standards while also recognising their licensing and training nationally. Victoria and Western Australia are now the only states that have not yet introduced the harmonised laws. SafeWork SA, 1300 365 255 www.safework.sa.gov.au

OhS advisors are increasingly required to have university qualifications. While the accreditation of university OhS education focuses on the generalist occupational health and safety role, the La Trobe program has an ergonomics and human factors emphasis. According to La Trobe University, this focus targets work-related musculoskeletal

Stressed out AustrAliAn workplaces are psychological minefields rife with stress, according to safety Consultants Australia. statistics from safe Work Australia’s Australian Workplace Barometer indicate depression costs Australia employers approximately AuD $8 billion per annum as a result of productivity loss, sickness absence and presenteeism. By 2020, stress-related illnesses such as depression and cardiovascular disease are predicted to become the leading causes of the global disease burden. Workers showing mild symptoms of depression take twice as many sick days as those who do not show any symptoms of depression at all. Working hours are also a major issue with 18 per cent of Australians working longer than 48 hours per week. the report also revealed the levels of bullying in Australian workplaces is substantially higher than international rates at 6.8 percent. One of the at risk groups included workers aged between 25-34 years as they show the poorest psychological health. safety Consultants Australia says urgent attention is needed to address harassment issues in Australian workplaces. the costs to employers can be reduced considerably through investment in initiatives that deal with incidents of bullying and harassment appropriately, build employee communication and by creating a positive culture that enables constructive communication and inhibits bullying behaviour.

Personal dosimeter HONEYWELL Safety has released the Howard Leight Quietdose Personal Dosimeter, designed to deal with hazardous levels of noise at work. Safework Australia estimates 1 million Australians are exposed to hazardous levels of noise at work at a cost of at least $30 million annually in compensation payouts. The Quietdose is an ‘in-ear’ dosimetry device that measures the noise that workers hear accurately and in real time. In-ear dosimetry is a relatively new concept to the industry. Quietdose measures the noise hitting the wearer’s eardrum, being a hearing protector that measures itself, taking the guesswork out of traditional dosimetry by providing accurate and useable data. The Quietdose can be programmed to send an alert to the supervisor if workers are being overexposed to noise.

Rescue and escape device Capital Safety has announced the new DBi-Sala Rollgliss R520 Rescue and Escape height safety device. according to the company, the new descender is the world’s first conventional twin brake rescue and escape descender of its kind. the Rollgliss R520 is a fully automatic controlled descent device with a dual braking system that offers a higher degree of safety when using the descender. Unlike A twin-brake rescue and escape descender. friction based descenders, it provides controlled descent self-rescue regardless of the user’s weight for the evacuation of multiple personnel, or the versatility of assisted rescue. With a second brake, the device provides increased protection in the worst case scenario should one of the brake systems fail due to damage or wear. the second brake is able to hold the load, safely supporting the person to the ground. available in a variety of lengths, each kit is pre-rigged and ready for immediate deployment in the event of an emergency. the user simply connects the descender to an anchorage point, attaches the connector to their harness and lowers themselves to perform a hands free descent. the descent speed is automatically limited during the descent, adjusting to the user’s body weight, allowing for a secure and effective escape within seconds. the Rollgliss R520 Rescue & Escape device can be used from heights of up to 150m from elevated work platforms (EWp’s), towers, cranes, buildings or other heights.

A-SAFE Polymer Safety Barriers Why is A-Safe so different? A-Safe products are polymer-based, so they are far more flexible and durable than conventional steel barriers. Hit them with a vehicle and they will spring back into shape, rather than bending or buckling, thus cutting maintenance costs by greatly reducing the need for damage repairs. A simple concept and one that is already used in many other applications. For instance, the motor industry started fitting plastic bumpers to their vehicles years ago. A-Safe decided to use the same principle for their products, with outstanding results.

Three decades of safety and containment solutions Spill Station is celebrating 30 years of providing environment, health and safety solutions to government and industry in Australia and around the world. Current CEO Bruce Cartwright founded the company in 1983, which was then known as Corrosion Concepts. The company supplied supplied chemical treatments such as rust prevention and fabric protection to Australian Defence Force (ADF). Experiences with chemical and liquid spills in the company led it to look at formulating a uniform spill response system for the workplace. After extensive field testing with the ADF, Bruce Cartwright launched the world’s first mobile bin spill kit. According to Nathan

Expanded distribution for conveyor brakes COREMO Ocmea has expanded its bulk handling expertise in Australia, with Australian Brake Controls (ABC) now distributing its products. Coremo Ocmea has more than 50 years experience in manufacturing brakes and clutches for industrial marine, oil and gas, mining and theatrical stage applications, with its products featuring in robust and reliable precision equipment ranging from conveyors, packaging lines and mining draglines to lifting systems, tension controls and hoists. ABC Industrial Brakes Division Engineer and Designer, Mr Gerry Lewis, says a major product line to benefit from Australian Brake Control’s complete engineered braking solutions will be Coremo hydraulic spring-applied failsafe brakes, used in bulk material conveyors on main drives, pulleys and take-up winches. “Coremo hydraulic spring-applied brakes are robustly protected against corrosion in the most extreme resources environments, yet supply high braking force within a very compact width of the brake body to ensure easy installation, even when space is limited,” said Mr Lewis.

Dragline braking solutions from Australian Brake Controls now incorporate the Coremo pneumatic spring-applied caliper brakes. Replacement of main wear parts such as pads, seals, springs is quick and easy. The braking load is not transmitted to the piston and seals, reducing wear and ensuring long life for these components. Reliability is further enhanced by proximity switches and pad wear indicators to ensure
proper monitoring of the brake. The friction pad surface is properly sized to ensure high heat dissipation in gradual stops of the conveyor, increasing life expectancy. As a result of the collaboration between the two companies, dragline braking solutions from Australian Brake Controls now incorporate the Coremo E4N-BP pneumatic spring-applied caliper brakes. The E calliper minimises backlash and maximises vibration dampening properties. The castings and steel components are strongly protected against corrosion, enhancing durability, while the adjustable gap between pads allows adequate end play of the motor shaft, enhancing reliability. The 4N-BP thruster supplies high braking force, with multiple springs. Its pneumatic release pressure is low, conforming with typical mining working conditions. The weight of the thruster can be easily balanced to allow the installation of the brake in any position around the disc.

Remote diagnostics tool for compressed air
B
OGE has released the airstatus, a new remote diagnostics tool which increases safety and transparency in compressed air production and all associated components. The airstatus tool helps prevent expensive service technician call-outs and maintains the high-level performance and efficiency of the compressed air station. With airstatus, users have control over up to 32 components from anywhere in the world. Process data such as status, maintenance messages, temperatures and pressures are directly transmitted and displayed, making airstatus a powerful remote diagnostics tool. Users can identify, analyse and react immediately to fault messages on their own computer or smartphone, considerably reducing the time needed to rectify faults. The monitoring facility is commissioned via a ModbusScan to detect each of the compressors and components. The system data communication is processed in real-time via GSM/GPRS or a LAN connection. Users can view data in the BOGE airstatus web portal or in the BOGE airstatus APP. It is possible to define limits which trigger alarm by email or SMS if they are exceeded or undercut. BOGE offers five different packages with successively advanced features. These range from the “local monitoring” package with hardware, web portal use and APP, to the mobile monitoring package with an additional SIM card right up to a premium monitoring package. The premium maintenance provides BOGE customers with both full transparency through the BOGE airstatus web portal and APP and also a maintenance contract which includes full system monitoring and maintenance. The “proactive maintenance” package, too, provides customers with a maintenance service. BOGE Compressors (Australia), 03 5940 3266 www.boge.net.au
