A rigorous process When Infrastructure Australia (IA) added the Western Australian Government’s proposed upgrade for Bindoon Bypass as a Priority Project on the Infrastructure Priority List (IPL), it was welcomed by industry for its potential to increase triple road train productivity. The IPL is a prioritised list of nationally significant investments – independently assessed by the IA Board – that provides decision makers with advice and guidance on projects that will underpin Australia’s continued prosperity. The IPL is due for publication this month and is made up of two broad groups: ‘projects’, which are solutions to a defined problem/opportunity where a full business case has been completed by the proponent and positively evaluated by IA; and ‘initiatives’, early stage solutions for which a business has not yet been completed. Following significant growth of Western Australia’s resources sector, demand to move freight along the Great Northern Highway corridor between ports in metro Perth and the north-west, including Port Hedland, Cape Lambert and Dampier is considerable. The proposed Bindoon Bypass, according to IA CEO, Romily Madew, aims to increase freight efficiency and

6

productivity by enabling access for triple road trains for the entire trip between Muchea and Wubin on the Great Northern Highway with existing road alignments and gradients between Wubin and Muchea currently unsuitable. She explains that drivers are often forced to stop at Wubin to decouple and reconfigure their vehicles into smaller combinations for this stretch of highway, decreasing freight productivity and efficiency since more truck trips are needed to deliver the same freight task. The remedy, in this instance, is to build a new highway to the west of Bindoon. Scope of works include a single carriageway in each direction along with various road and intersection improvements. Additional safety enhancements will include overtaking lanes every five to 10 kilometres and four new rest stops suitable for accommodating light vehicles and road trains. While the Bindoon Bypass upgrade is a win for commercial road transport operators, it also presents positive outcomes for all road users.

As mining companies and freight carriers adopt modern technologies over legacy systems, the risk of exposing a business to hackers increases.

CUB and McColl’s trial ‘Water on Wheels’ drought relief initiative CUB Queensland Sales Director, Mick McKeown, said the water deliveries were just one of the small things they could do to help those in regional Queensland who were still battling through drought. “We helped launch Water on Wheels because regional Australian communities like those in the Southern Downs have always supported us,” he said. “We have the water and McColl’s has the transport network, so it makes perfect sense for us to focus some of our disaster relief efforts on an initiative like this. e-commerce market.

How E-Commerce is Accelerating Logistics Innovations, authored by Professor Lisa Harrington, President and CEO of lharrington group llc, looks at six principal areas where e-commerce is challenging the supply chains of merchants and logistics companies: customer expectations for a perfect buying experience; consumers’ desire to buy and receive goods ‘anywhere, anytime’; exploding demand for urban delivery; competition for labor and wage inflation; the emergence of new online sales models and unexpected surges in demand; and environmental concerns. The impact of these challenges is most keenly felt in the areas of fulfilment and last mile delivery. Labour in the US, for example, which is the world’s second largest e-commerce market accounts for 40-60 per cent of warehousing operating costs. With real estate company CBRE predicting in 2018 that an additional 450,000 warehouse workers will be needed in the US by the end of 2019 and unemployment at a consistently low rate, this presents a risk in terms of both cost and recruitment, particularly during peak periods. Increased urbanisation, combined with heightened pressure – from both socially conscious consumers and municipal authorities, in particular – to reduce the

Keeping good company FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS, MUSCAT TRAILERS HAS SOURCED QUALITY COMPONENTRY FROM JOST AUSTRALIA TO ADD SIGNIFICANT VALUE TO THE TRAILING EQUIPMENT IT PRODUCES. New South Wales-based trailer builder, Muscat Trailers, has been in the business of designing and manufacturing durable, efficient and reliable trailers since the 1960s. To remain competitive in an increasingly dynamic industry, the manufacturer refined its core product offering which includes truck and dog combinations, side tippers, live bottom trailers, road trains, Performance-Based Standards (PBS) trailers, converter dollies and other custom builds. In time, the team at Muscat sought to enhance its trailers with components that align with the manufacturer’s focus on delivering high quality and durable gear. Braking the mould AN INNOVATIVE AUSTRALIAN DESIGNED BRAKE PRODUCT CALLED TRU-SHU IS REDUCING TRUCK AND TRAILER BRAKE MAINTENANCE, SAVING FLEETS AND TRANSPORT OPERATORS DOWNTIME AND HELPING BRAKE COMPONENTS LAST UP TO TWICE AS LONG. precautionary measure that can potentially save transport operators thousands of dollars in replacement costs. When brakes are in use, they generate heat, causing the drum to expand and become slightly cone shaped. Due to this outward pressure, over time, brake shoes can be wound outwards on one end, resulting in very uneven wear, defects and the need for brake shoe replacement or maintenance. Constructed of AS/NZS 5131 steel, combined with German hardware, TruShu is fitted directly onto the existing brake shoe, physically eliminating any opportunity for outward movement. Even in the harshest outback conditions and in extreme use, it can double the life of brake shoes. By ensuring brake shoes remain in alignment, trucks and trailers are kept on the road, where they need to be. Tru-Shu is designed, developed, tested and manufactured by ASET Engineering in South Australia. Together with undertaking research and development, ASET Engineering also manufactures products to support its freight business, All-Size Equipment Transport Services (ASET Services). the product. It’s definitely saving us wear and tear on our brakes on our trailers and because of that it’s making us safer and it’s saving us money.” Whiteline Transport Workshop Manager Phil Cook adds, “We found that we were changing brake shoes too often. Tru-Shu makes them last a lot longer – at least double the time.” The patented Australian made Tru-Shu is low cost and easy to install. And, whenever brakes are replaced, the Tru-Shu bolts straight back on with the addition of only some new single-use bolts. Tru-Shu can be reused repeatedly over many years. “It’s a one-off cost per trailer for as long as the trailer lives really,” says Ken. “It just makes the brakes last and operate as good

took years of experimentation to come up with the final product. “The disruption with a defect is massive,” says Ken. “Tru-Shu acts as a guide directly on the S-cam and the S-cam must operate correctly on top of the roller so you just know that they are going to wear correctly every time.” Since implementing the Tru-Shu across its fleet, ASET Services has not had a single brake shoe ride out of alignment. Ken says the business fits the Tru-Shu across the fleet to drive brakes and trailer brakes. Proud of how effective this solution was for the business, sharing it with others in the industry was the obvious next step. The issue was that the first iteration wasn’t as cost effective for small operators, so the work continued. ASET Engineering set out to develop a brake shoe support mechanism that was accessible to all transport operators – and the result was the Tru-Shu that is available to the market today. For Whiteline Transport, which operates out of Adelaide and Perth, the Tru-Shu has proved its worth. Company Director Sharon Middleton says Ken approached the business to try the product because its fleet travels through one of Australia’s toughest routes. “Running across the

According to Pack & Send CEO, Michael Paul, the company’s franchise model is key to ensuring a ‘premium service’ experience. “Our franchisees are our movers and shakers. They’re the faces of the overall business, and of their individual businesses too. As members of the communities they service, they play an integral role in the local marketing of Pack & Send,” he says. In contrast, the role of the franchisor is to provide franchisees with a solid foundation of business systems, or “small business with the tools of a big business,” as Michael puts it. 34

Q: Pack & Send has been around for a while now. Is the 2016 business still comparable to the one 22 years ago – for example, is parcel delivery still the core of the business? A: The Pack & Send business has changed tremendously since 1993. We started it before the notion of e-commerce, or even the Internet, was in the vernacular, so there has been a significant shift in the way we function. But our mission has always been the same – providing convenient access to a wide range of solutions when sending anything, anywhere. The types of services we can offer are now more varied, though – from traditional

domestic and international import and export work to more modern services, like supporting eBay and online retailers in delivering their products to customers. Q: How did the parcel delivery industry change since the early days? With Toll IPEC, Star Track and emerging online services like Sendle on the scene, the competition must be fierce. A: The parcel delivery industry has evolved with the times. For example, customers today expect that a fundamental requirement of parcel delivery services is an online ‘track and trace’ function that provides a real time delivery status. When we started in 1993, no parcel carrier in Australia had that capability as the technology wasn’t yet in place. You had to phone the carrier to find out exactly where your parcel was – and you usually got a response the next day. In the early days, deliveries were also primarily B2B and very few deliveries were made to households. The growth of e-commerce has changed that, with significantly more B2C deliveries. In line with that, the competition has also changed – for example, where Pack & Send once relied either on customers walking in store or phoning us to send their goods, we are now developing new and

order to comply with more than the usual Commonwealth, State and local regulations and has resulted in an ultrahigh technology facility that is covered by 69 safety and security cameras and extensive on-site fire detection and fire fighting systems. The authorities are anxious to prevent any incidents that could affect the operation of the airport so there is a continuous sampling of air to detect any smoke and the entire fire and security system is tamper monitored. The warehouse has nine robotic doors, which will open in the event of a fire to vent any smoke. The warehouse has a footprint of 11,000 square metres of which 50 per cent is refrigerated in four different temperature zones using a very efficient refrigeration plant that utilises ammonia rather than the more common Freon. The move from QFS’s previous premises in Stafford required 5,000 pallets to be moved in a 72 hour period and as the QFS fleet needed to continue to deliver goods to customers, contractors were engaged to handle the 120 trailer loads of products. A distinct point of difference between QFS and other food service suppliers

The truck brand of choice at QFS is Hino, mostly the wide body 500 Series with 260 horsepower engines and Allison automatic transmissions. is the extensive and ever increasing range of gourmet items that it has available including boutique nonalcoholic beverages. The beverage sector is a growing market and drinks now account for around 10 per cent of sales with almost 700 different beverage products available. The warehouse holds bay after bay of food service products that are not readily available in retail supermarkets and are required by catering, hospitality and cooked food outlets. One of the advantages of expanding the beverage business is the opportunity to cross sell food service products to those on the beverage customers’ base. “With beverages we don’t deal with the chef as we often do with food products,” says Brian Saharin, QFS General Manager. “Instead we deal with the front of house.” This opens the possibility to provide ancillary items such as napkins, coasters and straws and

customers who were predominantly beverage clients are now able to obtain food service products as well. This also translates into the opportunity for traditional food customers to amalgamate their beverage and food orders. QFS Company Director Guy Politi says that there is a trend in demand towards some higher quality food and beverages. “It can be tomato paste from Italy or cooking oil from Malaysia. We import a lot of quality gourmet products such as flour, rice and confectionery,” Guy says. The truck brand of choice at QFS is Hino, mostly the wide body 500 Series with 260 horsepower engines and Allison automatic transmissions. the headquarters, and guarantees fast and accurate processing of our customers’ requests. In addition to being market leaders in the trailer niche, Aspöck Systems is an important international partner for the automotive branch. Aspöck is able to fulfil the high expectations placed on automobile manufacturers with decisive assistance from the production locations in Portugal – the largest production site in the Aspöck Group – and Poland, which has been expanded appropriately over the past years. Here mainly rear lamps and stop lights for automobile manufacturers such as Audi or the French Groupe PSA are produced. Aspöck equips 550 to 600 thousand vehicles per year with these rear lamps. “In addition, we produce over 1.2 million third stop lights per year,” said CEO, Karl Aspöck. The acknowledged Aspöck quality is secured through test laboratories and test workshops at the headquarters and at several subsidiaries in the production and sales network.
