The Australian road transport industry is experiencing significant change this year, with state and Federal legislation as well as regulatory reviews and reforms that are set to impact fleet operators across the country. Reforms to heavy vehicle licensing, road user charges, Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), Chain of Responsibility (CoR) along with revised education initiatives and workplace practices affect supply chain businesses on a grand scale, which is why the Victorian Transport Association (VTA) is hosting a State Conference later this month (24-26 March) at Silverwater Resort, Phillip Island, Victoria. Around 200 delegates are expected to gather for two days of informative keynote addresses and panel sessions from prominent industry stakeholders from government, regulators and suppliers. The VTA has secured Transport Accident Commission Minister, Jaala Pulford to open the second day of the event. Re-elected as the Member for Western Victoria in last November’s state election, Pulford was re-appointed to Cabinet by Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews. Her announcement as a speaker was welcomed by VTA CEO, Peter Anderson, who said the delegates in attendance would benefit from

hearing about the Andrews Labor Government’s vision for the state’s road network and road safety. “In the short time since the Victorian election I’ve had the opportunity to represent the VTA in meetings with Minister Pulford on many occasions and have found her to be open, collaborative and genuinely interested in the freight and logistics industry,” said Anderson. “Minister Pulford understands the issues confronting freight operators and I’ve been impressed with her positive attitude and willingness to engage with the industry on a range of matters. We appreciate the time she has made to attend the conference and meet with our members,” he said. The VTA expects to feature around 35 speakers from government, regulators, operators and suppliers to address the conference. Other senior leaders to attend and address the event will include Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack, Shadow Assistant Minister for Road Safety, Glenn Sterle and Victorian Shadoe Minister Transport Infrastructure, David Davis.

Toll unveils new Australian ship Tasmanian Achiever II is the largest general cargo ship to fly the Australian flag and is set to enter service on 1 March, carrying goods between the Port of Melbourne and the Tasmanian Port of Burnie, according to transport and logistics company, Toll. The ship was unveiled at special ceremony in Burnie on 17 February. The 210-metre vessel is the first of two new ships commissioned by Toll to carry freight between the Australian mainland and Tasmania, increasing Toll’s Bass Strait cargo capacity by more than 40 per cent on each voyage. This increased capacity will reportedly ensure Tasmania’s primary producers and manufacturers have more reliable and guaranteed access to mainland and international markets on a daily basis, according to Steve Borg, Toll’s Executive General Manager, Tasmania and Shipping.

John explains that camber axles can increase the lifecycle of a tyre. “The RFS air suspension design accepts cambered axles which are held in the U-bolt. As a result, the axle can be easily removed – unlike other brands which are not necessarily as compatible with cambered axles – saving equipment owners re-fitment maintenance charges,” he says – adding that RFS also comes as standard with many new features such as ‘easy align’, which allows a wheel alignment to be performed in a matter of minutes. “The entire package can potentially increase the payload capacity of the RFS-specified trailer as well as optimise the wear of the tyres, essentially increasing an equipment

owners’ return on investment.” General features of RFS include spring arms, which are manufactured for precision and durability in Germany, Firestone air springs, Koni heavy-duty dampeners designed specifically for semi-trailers, M24 alloy steel dampener studs, fast-acting Wabco height control valve, zero leak Roufoss push-in type air fittings and cast steel axle saddles that are AS2074 compliant. John says the U-bolts are tempered to ISO standard 898-1 class 10.9. RFS also features precisely machined zinc-plated wheel alignment cams and can fit all axle types including BPW, York, LMS Dana and Fuwa K-Hitch. “The MK VI RFS design features a onepiece pressed hanger that is ideal because not only does it not require any welding but it is also not prone to cracking as a

systems that are typically larger and more difficult to get serviced, but it still has the same functionality. It is a high stroke tool for large structural assemblies. Hydraulic tools tend to be used for bigger dynamics. While bigger lock bolts are more typical for mining, 3/8” diameter is very common in trucking, so this tool is perfectly suited to the truck and trailer market.” Key to its versatility is the fact that it can be used with various nose assemblies, depending on the required task. “Our customers can have one tool for three different products so long as they purchase the required nose assemblies. That’s one of the things customers really like about this product,” adds John Belayiannis, Field Application Engineer at Infastech. “It’s not the only tool of its type in the market but it is definitely one of the most robust we’ve come across. Its versatility, tool stroke, the pulling force at its disposal and the expertise we have in-house at Infastech are some of its key selling points. Other benefits include its large pneumatic storage as far as storage and the relatively quick changeover of nose assemblies if the operator needs to use it to install different fasteners.” The ergonomic shape of the handle is designed to help reduce operator fatigue. As Engineering and Quality Manager at Infastech, Matt Wood, explains, “The tools are serviced by our qualified Avdel repair personnel – we even offer loan tools if they are available. It’s pretty much the same sort of service you get when you buy a car. It’s all about no downtime for the customer. Spare parts are also kept in Australia. FASTENERS
Strength to strength WHEN MANUFACTURING A TRAILER, ENSURING OPTIMUM STRUCTURAL STRENGTH IS A MUST. ACCORDING TO ARCONIC, MANUFACTURER OF THE HUCK® RANGE OF FASTENERS AND LOCK BOLTS, THE RESULTING STRENGTH OF A TRAILER IS HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON THE STRENGTH OF THE FASTENERS USED DURING THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. When the Huck® brand was founded by Louis Huck over 60 years ago, he designed his fasteners to stand up to the issue of coping with extreme stress and vibration, providing strength, and facilitating lighter, stronger and more durable builds. Founded on this philosophy, the Huck® Bolt has become an important part of Arconic’s fastener product range, particularly for Australia’s road transport industry. “The structural strength of any trailer is dependent upon how strong the fasteners are themselves. Huck fasteners consistently

is no need for the bolts to ever be tightened. With the trusted name Huck and multidecades of road transport experience, a trailer assembled with genuine Huck fasteners represents a superior value product as well as a selling feature. Huck’s pre-assembled, one-piece blind fasteners are ideal for applications where access is only possible from one side of the joint material. The blind fastener is placed in a pre-drilled hole and is installed by using an installation tool to pull the mandrel or pin head into the rivet body, expanding the rivet body and causing it to flare on the blind side of the joint material. This creates a permanent and vibration resistant fastening. Installation is typically complete in seconds. In the fastening world, clamp is the end game. And consistent clamp is the ultimate goal. Despite conventional wisdom, torque

More often than not, we’re having to unload from the road, so we need a crane with a bit of muscle and reach. Rather than simply asking the suppliers what they want, we are looking at gathering data to drive more data driven decision-making. WEIGHS LESS, WAY LESS. The Vector 1550 unit from Carrier is one of the lightest trailer refrigeration units on the market (712 kg) and operates with low noise emissions (71 dB). And while Vector 1550 units weigh less, they also offer way more. Designed using the patented combination of a hermetic compressor with an economizer, it delivers a 40 percent increase in refrigeration capacity during pull down. As a result, Vector 1550 units deliver faster temperature pull down, reaching the desired set point up to 25 percent faster compared to conventional technology and with extremely precise temperature control (+/- 0.8°C). As if that’s not enough, the Vector 1550 unit’s low fuel consumption reduces its overall carbon impact by up to 19 percent compared to conventional systems, the equivalent of removing 2.8 tons of CO2 per unit per year.

Industry leader: Rachel Michaud TRAILER MAGAZINE SAT DOWN WITH RACHEL MICHAUD OF KNORRBREMSE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW JOURNEY IN AUSTRALIA’S COMMERCIAL ROAD TRANSPORT INDUSTRY. What first drew you to the commercial road transport industry? I began at Thales working on the Bushmaster Protective Vehicles for the Australian Defence Force and loved being able to contribute to making the vehicle safer which could lead to saving soldiers’ lives. I then moved on to Knorr-Bremse where I am able to work on Safety Systems for Commercial Road Vehicles and love contributing to reducing the road toll on public roads. What does a standard day for you look like? No two days at Knorr-Bremse are the same. I have a very versatile and ever-changing work environment where I contrast from roll testing trucks at the heavy vehicle training facility in Shepparton to coming into the office and putting together unique safety braking systems for trailers. What has been a highlight for your career so far? Travelling to Munich in 2017 and seeing our companies head office, test track and meeting the architects of some of our most innovative products, (getting my multi combination truck licence is a close second). defining trait of Australia’s national identity is the ability to thrive in the face of adversity, as cricket great Matthew Hayden famously stated ahead of the 2007-08 test against Sri Lanka. “You never want an Australian with his back against the wall,” he said. “You put any 12 blokes together and you’ll get a job done. Whether it’s getting a bogged four-wheel-drive off the beach or standing in front of a cricket wicket and making sure we’re in a dominant position. It’s the same dog, different leg action, so to speak.” When Hayden made his now frequently cited observation, he most certainly didn’t have the nation’s transport equipment industry in mind. But in the face of a slowing economy and on-going political quarrel about the future of Australian manufacturing, it is now seeing an unlikely revival in the truck making community. Scarred by lacklustre sales and shaken by the effects of a fast-fading mining boom, the industry has been tumbling toward the proverbial wall for the best part of 2015, but instead of letting negativity become the new normal, it has found a way to turn adversity into opportunity – or make use of a different leg, as Hayden would put it. With heavy truck sales all but stagnating, truck makers are now eyeing the light and medium-duty end of the industry for new growth potential, as recent statistics collated by the Australian Road Transport Suppliers’ Association (ARTSA) confirm. The ARTSA figures show that new registrations for heavy vehicles with a GVM above 12 tonnes declined 11 per cent in 2015 compared to 2014. Within that category, heavy trailers were down 20 per cent and prime movers dropped 12 per cent, while heavy rigid registrations rose three per cent. In the medium-duty category (4.5 to 12 tonne GVM), new registrations rose 4.8 per cent compared with 2014 – and again, rigid trucks stood out with a 6.4 per cent rise. “We’ve only been monitoring Australian commercial vehicle registration data for a two-year period, but the verdict is

clear – there was a contraction in new heavy vehicle registrations over the past 12 months that especially hurt the prime mover segment. Only rigid trucks saw growth,” says Dr Peter Hart, Chairman of ARTSA. “There are now about 210,000 medium-duty rigid trucks and about 170,000 heavy-duty rigid trucks delivering freight in Australia. In comparison, there are 52,000 registered single-trailer primemovers and 40,000 multi-combination prime-movers, so rigid trucks outnumber prime-mover by about 2 ½ to one.” He adds that in a market where retirement rates are accelerating – heavy vehicle retirements were up 37 per cent compared with 2014, whereas medium rigid retirements increased by 21 per cent – rigid trucks are now important contributors to fleet growth. One reason for the segment’s relative resilience to economic woes could be its inherent versatility, Peter says, with applications reaching from general freight deliveries through to concrete mixing. In fact, 21 per cent of the rigid market currently fall under the ‘special vehicle’ banner, indicating that applications for the construction and waste industry continue to be important drivers of growth within the segment, he explains. Peter also found that the annual growth rate for dog trailers over the past two years was a healthy 2.8 per cent, indicating the rigid and dog market will also provide growth potential over the coming season. As such – even though ARTSA estimates that potential to remain in single-digit territory in 2016 – Peter says rigid trucks are likely to remain one of the few growth drivers in the marketplace. “For a long time, the high-margin prime mover market was firmly at the centre of attention. [But] there is now a shift in focus to the rigid truck market, probably because of growth in local freight deliveries. This could be where future business will be made – especially now that retirement rates are rising and new equipment will be needed. “The medium age of a two-axle registered rigid truck in Australia is about 17 years now,” Peter adds. “And for a three-axle

According to Pack & Send CEO, Michael Paul, the company’s franchise model is key to ensuring a ‘premium service’ experience. “Our franchisees are our movers and shakers. They’re the faces of the overall business, and of their individual businesses too. As members of the communities they service, they play an integral role in the local marketing of Pack & Send,” he says. In contrast, the role of the franchisor is to provide franchisees with a solid foundation of business systems, or “small business with the tools of a big business,” as Michael puts it. 34

Q: Pack & Send has been around for a while now. Is the 2016 business still comparable to the one 22 years ago – for example, is parcel delivery still the core of the business? A: The Pack & Send business has changed tremendously since 1993. We started it before the notion of e-commerce, or even the Internet, was in the vernacular, so there has been a significant shift in the way we function. But our mission has always been the same – providing convenient access to a wide range of solutions when sending anything, anywhere. A: The parcel delivery industry has evolved with the times. For example, customers today expect that a fundamental requirement of parcel delivery services is an online ‘track and trace’ function that provides a real time delivery status. When we started in 1993, no parcel carrier in Australia had that capability as the technology wasn’t yet in place. You had to phone the carrier to find out exactly where your parcel was – and you usually got a response the next day. In the early days, deliveries were also primarily B2B and very few deliveries were made to households. The growth of e-commerce has changed that, with significantly more B2C deliveries. In line with that, the competition has also changed – for example, where Pack & Send once relied either on customers walking in store or phoning us to send their goods, we are now developing new and
