An agile commitment It takes modern road tankers to fuel the aeronautic spectacle that lures the general public to the bi-annual Australian International Airshow. The Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition is one of Asia Pacific’s most prestigious aviation and aerospace events and the most comprehensive aviation, aerospace and defence exposition in the southern hemisphere, according to the event organisers. Such an event, though, requires collaboration with the road transport industry to function. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) along with other participating air forces and civil operators from around the world bring a remarkable collection of planes, helicopters, drones, trucks and other support vehicles. While there were many grounded static displays to inspect this year, from the impressive tandem rotor Chinooks to the classic F/A 18 Hornets, it was the roaring aerobatics of the Roulettes (PC-9s) along with the speed of the F-35 and the sheer might of the fourengine transport aircraft C-130J Hercules that stole the show. Logistics juggernaut, Linfox, in collaboration with energy distribution company, Viva Energy, made this all possible by delivering jet fuel to Avalon Airport in Geelong, Victoria, on a consistent basis. “We’re excited to support the Avalon Airshow in refuelling the aircraft leaving
6
spectators spellbound,” Viva Energy tweeted via Twitter in the lead-up to the event held in March. The company arranged for about six loads of Viva Energy jet fuel to be delivered via road transport daily to Avalon Airport. Viva Energy Refinery General Manager, Thys Heyns, said that bringing such a large-scale show together is no small feat. “I’m proud of the role that we play in supporting Avalon Airport and helping organisers bring this event to life,” he said. “Over the last few years we have invested heavily in the Geelong Refinery to increase the amount of fuel we can transport to Avalon Airport to support their ever-increasing activities and I’m pleased to see that our fuel can also bring so much delight for spectators.” The Geelong Refinery supplies 100 per cent of Avalon Airport’s jet fuel, supporting day-to-day operations for commercial airlines and also for special events such as the Airshow. Jet Fuel Gantry Operator, John Begg, is one of many faces at Geelong Refinery helping to manufacture the fuel behind the Airshow. “I’m proud that our great quality jet fuel – made by us here in Geelong – ends up exclusively refuelling the Avalon International Airshow,” he said.

Population growth, infrastructure projects drive Australian industry: Report industrial sector,” said Tyson. “In total 42 per cent of total industrial sales volumes occurred in NSW, and 26 per cent in Victoria and 16 per cent in Queensland. “While most of this population growth is concentrated in our three major capitals of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, the logistics sector continues to expand nationwide to cater not only for these additional people, but also for the continued gradual shift of consumer preferences to online platforms,” he said. Throughout 2018 there was a limited amount of industrial stock on the market relative to demand – a direct result of lower investment volumes, with sharp increases in land prices and the tightening of yields across all the major national industrial markets, according to Colliers. “The last 12-months saw solid capital

and labour market as well as luck. Likewise, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has asserted that it is an important economic priority for Australia to maintain supportive macroeconomic policies and to secure stronger demand momentum. “Other priorities include holding the course on macroprudential policies to reduce macro-financial risks, and complementing the current infrastructure boost with broad tax reform, sustained promotion of innovation and competition, and energy policy reform,” the IMF said in a statement, with reference to Commonwealth FY2018/19 Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook; FY2018/19 mid-year budget reviews from the states and FY2018 budgets from the territories. “Australia’s continued commitment to openness and trade will also support longer-term growth.” The IMF elaborated that policy reforms in particular will help raise the longer-term growth potential of the country. “Australia’s current boost in infrastructure investment supports domestic demand growth, while also helping to meet the needs of a growing population and laying the foundation for higher future productivity growth. Scope exists to further expand infrastructure spending to stimulate productivity, given Australia’s notable infrastructure gap compared to other advanced economies. Raising future productivity growth cannot rely on infrastructure alone. The national energy policy should reduce policy uncertainty and catalyse investment. Broader tax reform would be beneficial, if it focused on using more efficient taxes with stable bases, such as the GST and land taxes, while reducing overly generous tax concessions.” Australian Financial Review’s Matthew Cranston commented on economic stress tests, stating business inventories data provided a small ‘downside surprise’ of -0.2 per cent in the December quarter, below the 0.3 per cent rise the market anticipated, however most economists said this would have a flat impact on GDP numbers – although the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) raised the prospect that GDP could print negative in the quarter. “While there have been warnings about a recession in Australia given the rate of falling house prices and their impact on consumption, BIS Oxford has suggested that Australia’s mature economy is also better poised to responsibly manage household debt levels,” he said – noting that financial regulation strengthened by regular stress tests since the early 2000s had allowed for policycooled lending growth without causing bank stress,” he said. Sterne said that despite the housing market downturn, there is so far little evidence to suggest that banks are in trouble or that household debt levels are unsustainable. Meanwhile, National Australia Bank Director of Economics, Kieran Davies, said he thought the Federal Budget might already be back in surplus, based on an analysis of Government’s monthly financial statements (the deficit of $10.1 billion in the year to June 2018 had come into $1.6 billion in the year to December). “The sharp turnaround in the budget has been driven by increased revenue, where annual growth in trend terms held at 10 per cent for almost all of 2018,” said Davies. “This is the fastest growth since the economy pulled out of the Global Financial Crisis.”

been specifically designed and configured to the client’s needs. This includes key design features such as custom deck sizes and ramp widths and lengths, as well as ancillary equipment including Bekamax auto greasing systems and radio remote control functionality for the steerable axles. “The order was primarily to assist with the growing nature of Centurion’s business, especially the booming east coast operations, and to support the company’s extensive operations in Western Australia,” Khali explains. The units were progressively delivered between September last year and January this year, testament to the production capabilities of The Drake Group, made possible by its skilled workforce and stateof-the-art production facilities.

to make our tankers as safe as possible. For example, our handrails work in with our braking systems so that drivers can’t accidentally drive off with the hand rails up. Also, on many of our new tankers, manholes are now being placed on the bottom so that operators don’t need to climb up on top of the tankers. Instead everything is operated from ground level. This is currently being implemented across all of the tankers used for farm pick-ups. We are leading the pack with that because now we have started retrofitting older equipment with manholes at the bottom too. We’ve decided to go down this path to help keep our drivers safe.” Though McColl’s has been purchasing all of its tankers with EBS and including EBS on all tankers that have been refurbished

According to Erin Crombie from Saddingtons, there was a great deal of consultation with Marc prior to deciding on this model of crane. “There was lots of going back and forth to make sure this crane was the right fit for what we needed, including the size of the crane and whether we wanted a rear mounted or front mounted crane. We went through all of our common applications and agreed the PK 9.501SLD5A was best for the requirements of the company,” she says. ABC of Australian success stories SYDNEY-BASED BRAKING COMPONENT SUPPLIER, AIR BRAKE CORPORATION, HAS OPENED A MELBOURNE BRANCH TO HELP AMELIORATE ITS PARTS AND SERVICE OFFERINGS IN THE SOUTHERN STATES. Kelvin Sherwood, better known as Kel, is

an entrepreneur who in the mid-1980s recognised an opening for a supplier of quality braking system components for the local industry. At that stage he was approaching 50 and figured it was either now or never. Starting his own business in competition with the huge multinational Westinghouse Brake and Signal corporation was indeed a brave move and Kel agrees it was something of a ‘David and Goliath’ battle. However, with his accumulated wealth of business acumen, along with dogged determination and a lot of sheer hard work, ABC steadily grew in step with the burgeoning trucking industry, offering the latest technology products at affordable prices. The company has prospered as a result. Kel’s experience as a senior executive in the corporate world, including roles within the automotive braking industry, stood him in good stead for his challenging business venture. As a young man he attended university and achieved separate Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Business degrees. Following this Kel worked for automotive brake repair company Better Brakes for 17 years, a stint which he describes as his introduction to braking. “It was quite a big company back in the ‘60s and early ‘70s,” Kel explains. “While

On a roll THE RAZOR DELTA FRONT-TO-BACK POWER TARP IS AN EXTREMELY POPULAR TARP SYSTEM FOR TIPPERS. TRAILER AND BODY PRODUCER, CHRIS’S BODY BUILDERS, HAS BEEN INSTALLING AND SERVICING THE UNITS FOR THE BEST PART OF THE LAST DECADE. The steady rise in enforcement of load covering regulations for tippers over the last couple of decades means the likelihood of being slugged with a hefty fine for travelling ‘naked’ is extremely high. While it’s possible to still see the odd operator blasting along a motorway, leaving behind a cloud of material to subsequently sandblast the windscreens of the vehicles behind, the vast majority of tipper operators abide by the rules and keep their loads covered. Only six trucks of the older model remain and these will be replaced, starting next year, according to Chris. “For the local trucks we do an analysis on what the trucks are doing and what kilometres they accumulate during the course of the year. We take on an Agility Program for every truck allowing for 75,000 kilometres-ayear for the trucks on local consignment,” he says. “Our current contracts are taken over four years and we have a guaranteed future value from Mercedes-Benz on the buy-back. The truck is fully maintained by them.” Accident damage, windscreens and general wear and tear, are, under the agreement, the responsibility of Sydney Sideloaders. After four years, according to Chris, the business is attentive to the worth of each truck and what it will fetch as a repurchase from Daimler. If it’s in good condition Sydney Sideloaders will often choose to keep it.
