Follow through Despite social distancing and imposed isolation to curb the Covid-19 outbreak, I feel as though I couldn’t be closer to the core of our industry. Since the pandemic was declared, my colleagues and I adapted our business practices and increased our communications across multiple digital platforms in the interests of supporting our business associates during this global health crisis. We are committed, more than ever, to keeping our industries connected and supporting our clients and readers through this challenging time. Of course, meeting in person will be limited in the months ahead what with major conferences and events being postponed for the next six months, including some of our own. That doesn’t mean that we can’t chat though. The past few weeks have shown that we can still communicate over the phone and via the internet which has helped lift moods and identify fresh opportunities to pursue in this new world we find ourselves in. Be assured though that the team at Prime Creative Media are tackling these challenges head-on and overcoming them with positivity, patience, and calm. This mindset will see us prevail in the long term. With access to peer-to-peer

networking, instant messaging and social media channels, we have the tools in place to stay connected. This dynamic shift in operations will also open doors for manufacturers, suppliers and service providers as we adapt to the new status quo – even if it is relatively temporary. I cannot emphasise enough how strong of a position we are in with our media deliverables (print magazines, websites, e-newsletters, LinkedIn showcase pages). These points of contact will continue to facilitate the essential lines of communication that industry executives, trailer builders, component suppliers, fleet managers and association representatives depend on to make informed market decisions. After all, I have invested so much time and energy into this trailer industry resource that it has become a passion – a publication I am immensely proud of contributing to. So, let’s keep it going – this momentum will encourage the surge of activity our industry needs right now to thrive.

Luke and Rebecca Ashton started their own freight business in 2005 with a 14-pallet body truck and a small 10-pallet truck, managing pickups and deliveries on their own from Brisbane to the Gold Coast and Toowoomba. OzWide Freight’s business grew as a testament to their hard work and by 2012 Luke and Rebecca opened their first depot in Rocklea, expanding their service offering to include warehousing. The business now has depots in Perth, Rockhampton, Mackay Proserpine Townsville and Cairns. “Townsville and Cairns both have warehousing capabilities along with our Brisbane site at Crestmead,” Luke says — adding that it is still business as usual despite Covid-19. “We haven’t slowed down at all.” Today, with a team of 30 personnel, and a fleet mix of body trucks, prime movers, single trailers, container swinglifts and Vawdrey B-double sets, OzWide Freight run a highly competitive and dedicated

when completed for axle manufacturers. It is called the Tru-Shu Ezi-Fit.” The team working on the development of Tru-Shu Ezi-Fit is driven by Ken Pitt the owner/inventor and Gordon Crighton the CAD designer. The latest project, according to Stuart, incorporates the benefits of Tru-Shu such as even brake wear and preventing brake shoes from riding out the side of the drum. The design has additional significant benefits: “It cuts brake maintenance time by over half and eliminates disturbing sealed bearings by making it unnecessary to remove hubs every time minor maintenance is performed,” he says. Stuart sees this project has potential to reduce our dependence on imported axles and also creates an opportunity to export superior Australian-made axles. “This project will take time to find partners as well as gain support from Austrade or similar government departments,” he says. These developments follow the success of ASET Engineering’s current portfolio of braking technology products. “The current Tru-Shu is an economically priced bolt-on product that will provide significant benefit to anyone from a single operator to a 1,000-plus fleet business, Stuart says. “The Tru-Shu Ezi-Fit increases the benefits but is a complete solution that is built-in.” The current bolt-on Tru-Shu range is widely accessible to fleets Australia-wide and,

Fast Fact The owner of ASET Engineering, Ken Pitt, was frustrated by the premature replacement and misalignment of brake shoes – a common cause for fleets downtime – so he worked on his Tru-Shu solution which tackles the issue head-on. As the replacement of an axle set along with brake parts can cost thousands, Tru-Shu is helping to keep trucks on the move, saving operators time and money.

The axle has a standard brake arrangement on one end and the modified Tru-Shu Ezi-Fit brake on the other.

Building a community IN LIEU OF HOSTING ONSITE TRAINING AND TROUBLESHOOTING SESSIONS DUE TO COVID-19, WABCO AUSTRALIA HAS ESTABLISHED A NEW SYSTEM TO FACILITATE REMOTE LEARNING AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR WORKSHOPS AND DISTRIBUTORS. Recent measures to slow the spread of coronavirus such as social distancing has impacted how fleet operators and workshop managers typically deal with WABCO Australia on everything from troubleshooting hardware installations to manually programming Electronic Braking Systems (EBS). It was, by most industry standards, a swift turnaround. QuickSilver lining was used on the trailers to accommodate lower tipping angles while roll stability has been employed to limit sway of the following trailers as the electronically controlled active dampers adjust to suit road conditions by counteracting rollover tendencies of dynamic loads on corners. “Going around a left-hand bend at speed you get slight braking on the inside wheels of the trailer which prevents tilt on the trailers to reduce risk of rollover,” says Budd. “That’s a particular innovation crucial for the work we do. THE WALLS AND WHEELS

DELIVERY THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO OPERATE A TRANSPORT BUSINESS IN AUSTRALIA, BUT THE FRANCHISE MODEL IS STILL COMPARATIVELY RARE. MOOREBANK-BASED PACK & SEND HAS PERFECTED THE CONCEPT. Interview by Sebastian Grote

FAST FACT

According to Pack & Send CEO, Michael Paul, the company’s franchise model is key to ensuring a ‘premium service’ experience. “Our franchisees are our movers and shakers. They’re the faces of the overall business, and of their individual businesses too. As members of the communities they service, they play an integral role in the local marketing of Pack & Send,” he says. In contrast, the role of the franchisor is to provide franchisees with a solid foundation of business systems, or “small business with the tools of a big business,” as Michael puts it. 34

Q: Pack & Send has been around for a while now. Is the 2016 business still comparable to the one 22 years ago – for example, is parcel delivery still the core of the business? A: The Pack & Send business has changed tremendously since 1993. We started it before the notion of e-commerce, or even the Internet, was in the vernacular, so there has been a significant shift in the way we function. But our mission has always been the same – providing convenient access to a wide range of solutions when sending anything, anywhere. The types of services we can offer are now more varied, though – from traditional

domestic and international import and export work to more modern services, like supporting eBay and online retailers in delivering their products to customers. Q: How did the parcel delivery industry change since the early days? With Toll IPEC, Star Track and emerging online services like Sendle on the scene, the competition must be fierce. A: The parcel delivery industry has evolved with the times. For example, customers today expect that a fundamental requirement of parcel delivery services is an online ‘track and trace’ function that provides a real time delivery status. When we started in 1993, no parcel carrier in Australia had that capability as the technology wasn’t yet in place. You had to phone the carrier to find out exactly where your parcel was – and you usually got a response the next day. In the early days, deliveries were also primarily B2B and very few deliveries were made to households. The growth of e-commerce has changed that, with significantly more B2C deliveries. In line with that, the competition has also changed – for example, where Pack & Send once relied either on customers walking in store or phoning us to send their goods, we are now developing new and

The beverage sector is a growing market and drinks now account for around 10 per cent of sales with almost 700 different beverage products available. The warehouse holds bay after bay of food service products that are not readily available in retail supermarkets and are required by catering, hospitality and cooked food outlets. One of the advantages of expanding the beverage business is the opportunity to cross sell food service products to those on the beverage customers’ base. “With beverages we don’t deal with the chef as we often do with food products,” says Brian Saharin, QFS General Manager. “Instead we deal with the front of house.” This opens the possibility to provide ancillary items such as napkins, coasters and straws and

customers who were predominantly beverage clients are now able to obtain food service products as well. This also translates into the opportunity for traditional food customers to amalgamate their beverage and food orders. QFS Company Director Guy Politi says that there is a trend in demand towards some higher quality food and beverages. “It can be tomato paste from Italy or cooking oil from Malaysia. We import a lot of quality gourmet products such as flour, rice and confectionery,” Guy says. The truck brand of choice at QFS is Hino, mostly the wide body 500 Series with 260 horsepower engines and Allison automatic transmissions. order to comply with more than the usual Commonwealth, State and local regulations and has resulted in an ultrahigh technology facility that is covered by 69 safety and security cameras and extensive on-site fire detection and fire fighting systems. The authorities are anxious to prevent any incidents that could affect the operation of the airport so there is a continuous sampling of air to detect any smoke and the entire fire and security system is tamper monitored. The warehouse has nine robotic doors, which will open in the event of a fire to vent any smoke. The warehouse has a footprint of 11,000 square metres of which 50 per cent is refrigerated in four different temperature zones using a very efficient refrigeration plant that utilises ammonia rather than the more common Freon. The move from QFS’s previous premises in Stafford required 5,000 pallets to be moved in a 72 hour period and as the QFS fleet needed to continue to deliver goods to customers, contractors were engaged to handle the 120 trailer loads of products. A distinct point of difference between QFS and other food service suppliers

Where eagles dare CIMC INTERMODAL EQUIPMENT REBRANDED TO CIE MANUFACTURING IN JANUARY THIS YEAR. THIS REINVENTION FOLLOWS A SIGNIFICANT PRODUCTION MILESTONE FOR THE US-BASED OEM AS IT EXPANDS ITS DOMESTIC MANUFACTURING CAPABILITIES. and flourish in the 2020 decade, according to President and CEO, Frank Sonzala. The skeletal trailer specialist sees the name change as a positive first step towards bringing manufacturing back to the Land of Opportunity. The OEM held a ribbon cutting ceremony in June 2019 to celebrate the opening of its South Gate, California, facility. This site expansion added more than 50,00 square feet (4,645 square metres) and another 50,000-plus square feet of additional parking space, while building houses offices for purchasing, human relations, finance and accounting, logistics, sales support and key executives. The additional space enables the manufacturer to improve and re-organise the legacy facility in South Gate to update and enlarge all offices, employee facilities and operations. A modern, fully outfitted IT department was added along with a technical centre training room and new production support offices. The CIMC IE parts department doubled in size and redesigned production lines can now produce a hundred 53’ chassis and a hundred
