Australia on the advance While it has always been the way for newspapers to sniff out any hint of a business sale, no matter how threadbare the morsel is, Trailer is mindful of the news it delivers – in the interests of growing individuals, organisations and industries. Speculation reported by a number of outlets on the potential sale of Toll referred to anonymous sources, claiming parent company Japan Post had called in bankers to discuss exit strategies. Apparently, Japan Post met with investment banks and advisory firms to discuss methods to generate capital and was keen to stem losses in Toll’s offshore arms following the widely reported cyberattack which occurred earlier this year. These newspapers also clinged to financial results and earning calls from 2019 to round off their divestment speculation. It is important to note that Toll is a transport and logistics juggernaut operating across 1,200 locations in more than 50 countries. Just look at what the company is doing in light of business resilience and continuity during the Covid-19 pandemic. A spokesperson for the business
told Trailer that Toll has extensive experience in facing challenging situations that require the implementation of contingency plans. Toll elaborated that is has flexibility across its extensive network to provide the best possible service to its customers and will regularly review and update its plans as the situation evolves. The real meaty stories in the weeks and months to follow are the trials and tribulations of our industry leaders across all aspects of the supply chain who are meeting the challenges of Covid-19 head-on and sharing their tales of learning, success and recovery. This magazine continues to showcase the trailer manufacturers, suppliers, associations and individuals that are doing their part to maintain a prosperous and healthy Australia.

Carrier Transicold turns 50 Transport refrigeration provider, Carrier Transicold, has reached the significant milestone of 50 years, with the company intent on continuing to refine the systems which have revolutionised the global transport of perishable goods. The company traces its roots back to July 17, 1902 when Willis Carrier designed the first modern refrigerated air-conditioning system, launching an industry that would fundamentally improve the way we live, work and play.
Carrier Transicold continues to support Australia’s cold chain network with container, truck and trailer refrigeration solutions.

WA’s biggest road project to transform heavy vehicle freight connections The $1.02 billion NorthLink WA infrastructure road project is now providing a free-flowing link between Morley and Muchea, doubling road capacity and improving productivity. Road users travelling from Kewdale to Muchea can now avoid up to 16 sets of traffic lights, two railway crossings and 21 speed limit changes. Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, said the third and final section of the project – a 22-kilometre dual carriageway highway between Ellenbrook and Muchea – will transform how traffic enters and exits Perth from the state’s north. “The opening of the final section means road users, particularly freight, can now realise the full benefits of the 37-kilometre highway,”

The new measures will take advantage of the current low prices for oil and Australia’s privileged position of access to the SPR, which is amongst the world’s most cost-effective long-term oil storage facilities.

Fast Fact The LatchLiner, according to Vawdrey Australia Director, Paul Vawdrey, is designed to be a safer and more efficient mechanism for heavy vehicle operators when working with trailer curtains. “Improving work health and safety for customers is always a top priority for Vawdrey and the innovative LatchLiner does just that,” he says. “It reduces the risk of injury as the operator does not have to exert force to use it. The system can open the equivalent of 68 buckles on a B-double in seconds, without adding any heavy and potentially damage-prone technology to the mix. As the LatchLiner does not require any pneumatic, hydraulic or electric support, it will last a long service life.”

KEY TO THIS IS A NEW MERCEDES-BENZ ACTROS CHOSEN FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS, NOT LEAST ITS ABILITY TO AFFORD A ‘MAGIC CARPET’ RIDE FOR ITS HIGHLY VALUED PASSENGERS. As one of the more specialised and niche branches of the incredibly diverse road transport sphere, boutique horse transport operations tend to be small one, two or three truck concerns that work on a high degree of trust between operator and clients. Tim Shute, along with his wife Rebecca, owns and operates Hann’s Horse Transport from their home base at Lethbridge near Geelong and cater for clients in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. They also have a long-standing arrangement with a similarly reputable transporter who handles the Queensland work. The business was first started in Adelaide in the early 1970s by a harness racing aficionado who built it up based on the patronage of fellow harness racers in the southern state. However, by the time Tim started working for him in 2009 the Adelaide harness racing scene was on the wane.

DELIVERY THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO OPERATE A TRANSPORT BUSINESS IN AUSTRALIA, BUT THE FRANCHISE MODEL IS STILL COMPARATIVELY RARE. MOOREBANK-BASED PACK & SEND HAS PERFECTED THE CONCEPT. Interview by Sebastian Grote
FAST FACT
According to Pack & Send CEO, Michael Paul, the company’s franchise model is key to ensuring a ‘premium service’ experience. “Our franchisees are our movers and shakers. They’re the faces of the overall business, and of their individual businesses too. As members of the communities they service, they play an integral role in the local marketing of Pack & Send,” he says. In contrast, the role of the franchisor is to provide franchisees with a solid foundation of business systems, or “small business with the tools of a big business,” as Michael puts it. 34

Q: Pack & Send has been around for a while now. Is the 2016 business still comparable to the one 22 years ago – for example, is parcel delivery still the core of the business? A: The Pack & Send business has changed tremendously since 1993. We started it before the notion of e-commerce, or even the Internet, was in the vernacular, so there has been a significant shift in the way we function. But our mission has always been the same – providing convenient access to a wide range of solutions when sending anything, anywhere. The types of services we can offer are now more varied, though – from traditional
domestic and international import and export work to more modern services, like supporting eBay and online retailers in delivering their products to customers. Q: How did the parcel delivery industry change since the early days? With Toll IPEC, Star Track and emerging online services like Sendle on the scene, the competition must be fierce. A: The parcel delivery industry has evolved with the times. For example, customers today expect that a fundamental requirement of parcel delivery services is an online ‘track and trace’ function that provides a real time delivery status. When we started in 1993, no parcel carrier in Australia had that capability as the technology wasn’t yet in place. You had to phone the carrier to find out exactly where your parcel was – and you usually got a response the next day. In the early days, deliveries were also primarily B2B and very few deliveries were made to households. The growth of e-commerce has changed that, with significantly more B2C deliveries. In line with that, the competition has also changed – for example, where Pack & Send once relied either on customers walking in store or phoning us to send their goods, we are now developing new and

The beverage sector is a growing market and drinks now account for around 10 per cent of sales with almost 700 different beverage products available. The warehouse holds bay after bay of food service products that are not readily available in retail supermarkets and are required by catering, hospitality and cooked food outlets. One of the advantages of expanding the beverage business is the opportunity to cross sell food service products to those on the beverage customers’ base. “With beverages we don’t deal with the chef as we often do with food products,” says Brian Saharin, QFS General Manager. “Instead we deal with the front of house.” This opens the possibility to provide ancillary items such as napkins, coasters and straws and
customers who were predominantly beverage clients are now able to obtain food service products as well. This also translates into the opportunity for traditional food customers to amalgamate their beverage and food orders. QFS Company Director Guy Politi says that there is a trend in demand towards some higher quality food and beverages. “It can be tomato paste from Italy or cooking oil from Malaysia. We import a lot of quality gourmet products such as flour, rice and confectionery,” Guy says. The authorities are anxious to prevent any incidents that could affect the operation of the airport so there is a continuous sampling of air to detect any smoke and the entire fire and security system is tamper monitored. The warehouse has nine robotic doors, which will open in the event of a fire to vent any smoke.
