To be frank The Australian Road Transport Suppliers Association (ARTSA) and the National Bulk Tanker Association (NBTA) have debriefed on their Brisbane Truck Show meeting, which covered a range of industry talking points including Performance-Based Standards and the National Heavy Vehicle Law (NHVL) review. The meeting was held 16 May at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and drew a crowd of 100 attendees. Dr Peter Hart of ARTSA facilitated a discussion between National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) CEO, Sal Petroccitto, NBTA Chairman, Justin Keast and ARTSA Chair, Martin Toomey, on big issues and where the industry can help the Regulator. The panel agreed PBS is productive, better and safer, and that it is a ‘must deliver’ outcome for industry and the community. They felt there is a future opportunity for PBS to move more towards prescription. One immediate issue to be tackled is to ensure that PBS vehicles can continue to be used beyond the initial PBS approved application. The audience asked the panel: how to further capitalise on one in five new vehicles that are PBS vehicles? Also, how can industry simplify access and

ART DIRECTOR Blake Storey

descriptions of type classes and what these combinations can do? The panel agreed that there is a need to improve access and provide a minimum level of guaranteed access. There are limitations, and the NHVL review will need to address this issue. On the subject of moving into a prescriptive domain, the panel explained that it is a Ministerial area and could possibly be progressed through the NHVL review. The 9,000 PBS vehicles risk becoming an ‘orphan child’ in that they have been approved for specific use, yet they are safer and more productive and are deserving of a life after their initial PBS use is finished. It is an appropriate topic for the NHVL discussion. It is also a challenge to Industry Associations: beat the drum to make it work better and knock down some barriers. Education and information is the key rather than confrontation. In closing both Martin Toomey and Justin Keast emphasised the great benefit that these kinds of gatherings offer in bringing parties together and having full and frank discussions.

WEIGHS LESS, WAY LESS. The Vector 1550 unit from Carrier is one of the lightest trailer refrigeration units on the market (712 kg) and operates with low noise emissions (71 dB). And while Vector 1550 units weigh less, they also offer way more. Designed using the patented combination of a hermetic compressor with an economizer, it delivers a 40 percent increase in refrigeration capacity during pull down. As a result, Vector 1550 units deliver faster temperature pull down, reaching the desired set point up to 25 percent faster compared to conventional technology and with extremely precise temperature control (+/- 0.8°C). As if that’s not enough, the Vector 1550 unit’s low fuel consumption reduces its overall carbon impact by up to 19 percent compared to conventional systems, the equivalent of removing 2.8 tons of CO2 per unit per year.

sanding before the topcoat is applied. It also features a high productivity Wet-OnWet (WOW) mode which means there is no need for a primer curing cycle – the topcoat colour can simply be applied over the top. Being tinted to a sympathetic colour to match the topcoat colour brings even more advantages. Not only does it allow the topcoat coverage to be achieved quicker which saves on application time, it can also be done using less topcoat material which helps trim overall job cost. In the long term, having the sympathetic primer colour underneath the topcoat even benefits the vehicle operator. Rather than stone chips, scratches, etc standing out as grey or beige (typical primer colours), the underlying colour means these blemishes are not immediately obvious and UV protection of the finish is retained.

Cleverly engineered AT NEARLY 20 METRES, THE NEWLY RELEASED PERFORMANCE-BASED STANDARDS–APPROVED EASYSTEER MOVING FLOOR TRAILER BY GRAHAM LUSTY TRAILERS OFFERS A UNIQUE SOLUTION FOR HIGH CUBIC HAULAGE. USING A CLEVER SUSPENSION DESIGN, COUPLED WITH AN INNOVATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM BY KNORR-BREMSE, THE WORK OF A B-DOUBLE IS BEING DONE WITH A SINGLE TRAILER. Unveiled at the recent Brisbane Truck Show in mid-May, Graham Lusty Trailers (GLT) says that this new trailer solution is a world-first. “It’s a 64 ft unit that can replace a B-double. The way it has been engineered results in a payload increase of about four to five tonne over a traditional tri-axle trailer, which is achieved purely by the Easysteer suspension module,” explains Simon Frederiksen, Marketing Manager at GLT. “Because wood chips are a light product, at around 380kg per cubic metre, we need to go longer with the trailer to get the 127 cubic metres. Payload wise, the trailer can carry up to 32.2 tonnes, when coupled with the twin steer truck it has been designed around.” The trailer has B-double route access and

In addition to its specialty of line haul and local temperature-controlled transport, Blenners’ suite of services includes long- and short-term storage of frozen and chilled products utilising temperature-controlled loading docks to ensure cold chain integrity. INDUSTRY LEADERS

Industry leader: Coralie Chapman TRAILER MAGAZINE SAT DOWN WITH CORALIE CHAPMAN OF LINFOX TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HER JOURNEY IN AUSTRALIA’S COMMERCIAL ROAD TRANSPORT INDUSTRY. What first drew you to the commercial road transport industry? I was placed into a program when I was 19 as I had been out of work for nearly 12 months with no qualifications. On the first day Mick Best from Linfox spoke to us. His passion and enthusiasm for the industry was infectious and at that moment I decided I wanted that same feeling. Since that day it’s hasn’t disappointed me. What has been a highlight for your career so far? The biggest highlight for me so far has been being awarded the Australian Trucking Association’s 2019 Women of the Year. What an honour. To be in the same category as the women that have come before me just blows me away. I was also lucky enough to be sitting with three previous winners of the award – Nola Bransgrove, Pam McMillan and Carol Single. Really, I couldn’t have been in better company. What is the best thing about the transport industry? In my mind – everything. There is so much you can do. I personally have concentrated on road transport but that would be because of my love of trucks. The people,

“I am pleased to have seen many changes in terms of the proliferation of safety features incorporated into trucks and trailers. The latest EBS braking systems have been a great development. “I’ve also witnessed massive innovation in the design of equipment to achieve lighter tare weights, higher payloads and safer and easier working conditions.” He proceeds to highlight on-vehicle weighing systems, introduced from 1976, which have given rise to highly accurate weight determination in the logging industry. “Sadly, I have observed that many other transport operations are not taking load mass accuracy as seriously as they could or should. I think the log transport industry can be justifiably proud of the accuracy in terms

of axle group and gross mass to which the trailers are loaded.” Other changes Graeme regards as significant include the comfort and ease of operation for drivers with the modern features and innovations of trucks, trailers and associated equipment. On the topic of Performance-Based Standards (PBS), Graeme says this development has allowed his company to build innovative trailers including the Long Logger which enables the haulage of 19-metre length logs on a tri-tri B-double. It has also allowed the design and manufacture of Elphinstone’s patented Easy Steer suspension which Graeme says enables longer trailer bodies with higher payloads, while significantly reducing road wear in addition to minimising trailer suspension and tyre wear. defining trait of Australia’s national identity is the ability to thrive in the face of adversity, as cricket great Matthew Hayden famously stated ahead of the 2007-08 test against Sri Lanka. “You never want an Australian with his back against the wall,” he said. “You put any 12 blokes together and you’ll get a job done. Whether it’s getting a bogged four-wheel-drive off the beach or standing in front of a cricket wicket and making sure we’re in a dominant position. It’s the same dog, different leg action, so to speak.” When Hayden made his now frequently cited observation, he most certainly didn’t have the nation’s transport equipment industry in mind. But in the face of a slowing economy and on-going political quarrel about the future of Australian manufacturing, it is now seeing an unlikely revival in the truck making community. Scarred by lacklustre sales and shaken by the effects of a fast-fading mining boom, the industry has been tumbling toward the proverbial wall for the best part of 2015, but instead of letting negativity become the new normal, it has found a way to turn adversity into opportunity – or make use of a different leg, as Hayden would put it. With heavy truck sales all but stagnating, truck makers are now eyeing the light and medium-duty end of the industry for new growth potential, as recent statistics collated by the Australian Road Transport Suppliers’ Association (ARTSA) confirm. The ARTSA figures show that new registrations for heavy vehicles with a GVM above 12 tonnes declined 11 per cent in 2015 compared to 2014. Within that category, heavy trailers were down 20 per cent and prime movers dropped 12 per cent, while heavy rigid registrations rose three per cent. In the medium-duty category (4.5 to 12 tonne GVM), new registrations rose 4.8 per cent compared with 2014 – and again, rigid trucks stood out with a 6.4 per cent rise. “We’ve only been monitoring Australian commercial vehicle registration data for a two-year period, but the verdict is

clear – there was a contraction in new heavy vehicle registrations over the past 12 months that especially hurt the prime mover segment. Only rigid trucks saw growth,” says Dr Peter Hart, Chairman of ARTSA. “There are now about 210,000 medium-duty rigid trucks and about 170,000 heavy-duty rigid trucks delivering freight in Australia. In comparison, there are 52,000 registered single-trailer primemovers and 40,000 multi-combination prime-movers, so rigid trucks outnumber prime-mover by about 2 ½ to one.” He adds that in a market where retirement rates are accelerating – heavy vehicle retirements were up 37 per cent compared with 2014, whereas medium rigid retirements increased by 21 per cent – rigid trucks are now important contributors to fleet growth. One reason for the segment’s relative resilience to economic woes could be its inherent versatility, Peter says, with applications reaching from general freight deliveries through to concrete mixing. In fact, 21 per cent of the rigid market currently fall under the ‘special vehicle’ banner, indicating that applications for the construction and waste industry continue to be important drivers of growth within the segment, he explains. Peter also found that the annual growth rate for dog trailers over the past two years was a healthy 2.8 per cent, indicating the rigid and dog market will also provide growth potential over the coming season. As such – even though ARTSA estimates that potential to remain in single-digit territory in 2016 – Peter says rigid trucks are likely to remain one of the few growth drivers in the marketplace. “For a long time, the high-margin prime mover market was firmly at the centre of attention. [But] there is now a shift in focus to the rigid truck market, probably because of growth in local freight deliveries. This could be where future business will be made – especially now that retirement rates are rising and new equipment will be needed. “The medium age of a two-axle registered rigid truck in Australia is about 17 years now,” Peter adds. “And for a three-axle

According to Pack & Send CEO, Michael Paul, the company’s franchise model is key to ensuring a ‘premium service’ experience. “Our franchisees are our movers and shakers. They’re the faces of the overall business, and of their individual businesses too. As members of the communities they service, they play an integral role in the local marketing of Pack & Send,” he says. In contrast, the role of the franchisor is to provide franchisees with a solid foundation of business systems, or “small business with the tools of a big business,” as Michael puts it. 34

Q: Pack & Send has been around for a while now. Is the 2016 business still comparable to the one 22 years ago – for example, is parcel delivery still the core of the business? A: The Pack & Send business has changed tremendously since 1993. We started it before the notion of e-commerce, or even the Internet, was in the vernacular, so there has been a significant shift in the way we function. But our mission has always been the same – providing convenient access to a wide range of solutions when sending anything, anywhere. The types of services we can offer are now more varied, though – from traditional

Q: How did the parcel delivery industry change since the early days? With Toll IPEC, Star Track and emerging online services like Sendle on the scene, the competition must be fierce. A: The parcel delivery industry has evolved with the times. For example, customers today expect that a fundamental requirement of parcel delivery services is an online ‘track and trace’ function that provides a real time delivery status. When we started in 1993, no parcel carrier in Australia had that capability as the technology wasn’t yet in place. You had to phone the carrier to find out exactly where your parcel was – and you usually got a response the next day. In the early days, deliveries were also primarily B2B and very few deliveries were made to households. The growth of e-commerce has changed that, with significantly more B2C deliveries. In line with that, the competition has also changed – for example, where Pack & Send once relied either on customers walking in store or phoning us to send their goods, we are now developing new and

By intelligent design THE INTELLIGENT TRAILER PROGRAM IS WABCO’S HOLISTIC FORAY INTO SAFER AND MORE EFFICIENT TRAILING EQUIPMENT THROUGH THE USE OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES. The commercial road transport industry is embracing technological change, specifically the development of ‘smart’ trailers. With access to more than 40 trailer functions that increase operational effectiveness as well as vehicle operator safety and comfort, WABCO has been mobilising vehicle intelligence with its Intelligent Trailer Program since its initial launch in 2010. Back in 1981, WABCO, together with commercial vehicle manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz, launched the first Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) for trucks and buses – this innovation would be introduced to trailer builds two years later. Fast-forward to 1997, WABCO harnessed Electronic Braking Systems (EBS) for trailer
