Famous novelist and comtemporary culture critic, Brett Easton Ellis, said in his latest work of non-fiction that opinions can change, even if, according to social media, they’re supposed to be forever. This salient point may just be one of the reasons why many in the commercial road transport industry are often hesitant to engage in social media conversations on channels such as LinkedIn, Twitter and even Facebook. And then there is the rest of the online community that openly shares their insights with seemingly careless abandon. While posting candid thoughts about the state of trailer manufacturing or how heavy vehicle operators manage fatigue may be trivial or seemingly harmless to some, there are those in the industry who take every published word as uncompromising gospel. Maybe it’s the timely reminder of Australia’s defamation laws being bandied about in the New South Wales supreme court – in the wake of major media companies and Facebook being found legally responsible for premoderating comments on the social media site – that is giving pause to some ‘keyboard warriors’.
This is an age, according to Brett Easton Ellis, where resisting the threatening groupthink of ‘progressive ideology’, which proposes universal inclusivity except for those who dare to ask questions, is somehow wrong. This fear of conflict leads to what business writer, Patrick Lencioni, calls artificial harmony. And there is nothing truly progressive to be gained from this form of dysfunction. The best way forward is to ask questions, and most importantly, be honest so that your peers and the industry at large can learn. The sharing of information is vital to change the status quo. Right now, there are associations collaborating with government to amend road vehicle standards legislation, while technology companies are developing upgrades designed to save lives. If you have a platform to speak your mind, and add value to a greater conversation, it might just cut through the noise.

2019 market report, following last year’s annual growth in new registrations of 23 per cent across heavy vehicles. ARTSA Data Executive Director, Rob Perkins, said that growth in new registrations was very strong for 2017-18 and it was an exceptional and record-setting year for new registrations in all categories. “The results for financial year 2018/19 show a small decline in total new registrations when compared to the last, record setting financial year,” he said. “Rigid truck and trailers managed a very small (less than 1 per cent) growth in the new registrations compared with the previous year, but heavy prime mover new registrations slid backwards six per cent compared with the previous year. Hotline necessary to make roads safer: NHVR The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) Heavy Vehicle Confidential Reporting Line (HVCRL) has taken almost 1,500 calls in its first year of operation. NHVR National Intelligence Coordinator, Aarron Unger, said that the hotline had proved invaluable for heavy vehicle drivers and supply chain coordinators. “What the hotline provides is a safe, confidential way for people to report unsafe or unfair practices,” said Unger. “Over the past year the hotline has proved incredibly necessary in making our roads safer for everyone. “It’s provided our Investigations team with the information they need to look into the minority of organisations across all duty holders that are doing the wrong thing.
The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator established a hotline last year to allow people to report unsafe or unfair practices in confidence.

“Accuracy is really important to us at Supagas and that’s one of the reasons we chose the PreciGAS LPG metering system – to ensure our customers get the right amount of product. We want to make sure customers are billed correctly and accurately. “Flow metering systems we’ve used in the past use technology that goes back 20 or 30 years, whereas the technology on the PreciGAS system is very advanced. There are many features that come with that sort of new technology; and that’s what makes the PreciGAS system different to other products in the market.” Designed for ease of use, the lightweight PreciGAS system is fully automated,

So, we decided to set the Epsilon crane up onto a B-double so we could achieve higher payloads,” explains James. Operating under Concessional Mass Limits (CML), which are set at five per cent higher than General Mass Limits (GML), the 19-metre B-double can still access the same routes. In Asher Enterprises’ case, James says the new combination can carry up to 33 tonnes. As the previous crane truck could only carry 23 tonnes, this new set-up has provided enhanced flexibility and productivity. In addition to achieving greater payloads through CML, the business is also achieving greater lifting capacities too, with the crane able to lift an additional six tonnes. In the current set up, the Epsilon Q170z96 can lift up to 1,670kg at 9.6 metres. With the time we’re saving from not having to couple and uncouple the trailers, we are gaining an extra load a week.
The Stag is achieving a maximum payload of 44.5 tonne, around half a tonne more than the other conventional B-doubles in the fleet, yet the big saving comes from its added capabilities. “With the time we’re saving from not having to couple and uncouple the trailers, we are gaining an extra load a week. It’s also a lot less physically demanding for our drivers. When using our conventional B-doubles, they have to unwind the legs, couple and uncouple the trailers, which is a lot more work. We cart a lot of lime locally, so the driver could be doing up to three loads in a day. A lot of time is wasted having to hook and unhook trailers, so we’re saving around an hour a day in wages too, and over the course of the month that adds up, so it’s a big saving,” Scott adds. Interestingly, the combinations also have three weighing systems, each of which serves a different purpose. The Cleral is a complete combination including prime mover airbag weighing system with a hand-held wireless remote. Then there’s Wabco’s Smartboard interface working in tandem with the EBS braking system to give an accurate weight read out. And finally, an Accuweigh load cell weighing system is used to determine the exact weight of each delivery. According to John Bailey, the load cell weighing system was fitted in a way that was rather unique.

Building on solid foundations MGM GROUP CUSTOMISES ITS TRAILER FLEET WITH THE COMPLETE RANGE OF BPW AXLES, DISC BRAKES AND ALLOY HUBS TO DELIVER COST-EFFECTIVE TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS SOLUTIONS FOR AUSTRALIA’S MINING INDUSTRY. A trailer built by Vawdrey Australia fitted with BPW axles.
Bunbury, Western Australia, is home to a successful family business that has delivered transport and logistics services since the 1950s. With Mario Giacci and his family at the helm, what was once a modest venture became a prominent national operation aptly named Giacci Bros. By 2004, Mario Giacci – along with his daughter, Giuditta, and son, Michael – founded MGM Group, which was established as a supplier of reconstituted blocks, concrete and premium quarry materials to support the country’s booming mining industry. Over the next decade, MGM Group diversified by investing in more equipment and resources. After the sale of Giacci Bros to a public listed company, MGM added a bulk division to the Group in 2014, known as MGM Bulk and has seen significant growth in the last few years. In April 2014, the company’s fleet comprised seven prime

movers and 18 trailers, but according to Workshop Manager, Allan Thomas, there are currently nearly 100 Kenworth trucks and over 300 trailers in operation built by Bruce Rock Engineering, Vawdrey Australia and Graham Lusty. “These trailers are predominantly side and end tippers although there are about eight sets of curtainsiders and three new tanker combinations,” Allan says, explaining that about 50 per cent of the entire fleet is Performance-Based Standards (PBS) approved. “MGM Group specifies the complete range of BPW components in all trailer builds for their strength, reliability and light tare weight benefits. In fact, the business has opted for BPW axles since the 1960s. In more recent years we have also acquired second-hand equipment spec’d with BPW running gear because we depend on quality, long-term investments for rigorous mining applications.” Allan oversees two MGM Group workshops (Picton and Port Hedland) and manages the scheduling and maintenance of the company’s road transport assets. Bringing close to three decades of industry experience to the business, Allan is instrumental in the design and selection of new vehicles. “MGM Group services the mining companies that operate in Australia’s west, so we primarily engage in A-B bulk haulage contracts – including the cartage of iron ore to Port Hedland or shifting loads of

to ensure the work is done in the safest and most efficient manner. Yet it’s the inherent nature of the thoroughfares leading into properties where cattle are loaded that demands much of the various vehicular components, not least the device that keeps the prime mover and trailers connected, commonly called either a fifth wheel or turntable. Due to the number of forces acting upon it in different directions, the fifth wheel must be engineered and built to a high degree of strength and precision, with all units sold in Australia undergoing mandatory independent certification to ensure fitnessfor purpose. Not surprisingly, units fitted to stock hauling combinations need to be at the higher end of the heavy-duty scale and preferably of the ball-race variety rather than fixed units. As the name suggests, the ball-race fifth wheel is constructed of a top plate

HEATHER’S UNDYING PASSION IS TO ASSIST MANY PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY LADIES, TO BECOME FULLY TRAINED AND GO ON TO ENJOY SUCCESSFUL CAREERS IN THIS VIBRANT AND DIVERSE INDUSTRY. What first drew you to the commercial road transport industry? I was in a desperate financial situation in the early 1990s when I became a single parent. A kind friend of mine gave me a break by employing me to drive his trucks and allowing me to take my two girls with me while I drove. What does a standard day for you look like? A standard day for me is getting up early in the morning to check my emails. I then head out to my transport yard and catch up with my female crew. After this I hop into a truck and drive for 8 to 14 hours, depending on the job. Many days it is with a new driver behind the wheel and me instructing them for those hours. All in a life’s work PHIL WEBB STARTED HIS CAREER WITH PACCAR IN LATE 1975. SOME 44 YEARS LATER, AFTER RISING TO THE RANK OF OFF-HIGHWAY AND EXPORT MANAGER WITH A STRONG ENGINEERING INVOLVEMENT, HE HAS RETIRED TO SPEND MORE TIME RUNNING HIS FARM. It could well be the subject of many a young boy’s dream – to work for the company that produces the iconic Kenworth trucks in their various iterations. Phil Webb has lived this dream for more than four decades, indelibly stamping his unique engineering prowess into an array of Australian-built Kenworth models that have rolled out of PACCAR’s Bayswater (Vic) production facility in that time. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to state that Phil’s input has played a pivotal role in the formidable success of the Kenworth brand in this country. Put simply, Kenworth’s bullet-proof reputation and subsequent sales success have come about due to PACCAR’s local aptitude in engineering and building trucks that not only survive but thrive in the harshest conditions this country has to offer. Phil’s first role with PACCAR in 1975 was Sales Administration Assistant; however, it

defining trait of Australia’s national identity is the ability to thrive in the face of adversity, as cricket great Matthew Hayden famously stated ahead of the 2007-08 test against Sri Lanka. “You never want an Australian with his back against the wall,” he said. “You put any 12 blokes together and you’ll get a job done. Whether it’s getting a bogged four-wheel-drive off the beach or standing in front of a cricket wicket and making sure we’re in a dominant position. It’s the same dog, different leg action, so to speak.” When Hayden made his now frequently cited observation, he most certainly didn’t have the nation’s transport equipment industry in mind. But in the face of a slowing economy and on-going political quarrel about the future of Australian manufacturing, it is now seeing an unlikely revival in the truck making community. Scarred by lacklustre sales and shaken by the effects of a fast-fading mining boom, the industry has been tumbling toward the proverbial wall for the best part of 2015, but instead of letting negativity become the new normal, it has found a way to turn adversity into opportunity – or make use of a different leg, as Hayden would put it. With heavy truck sales all but stagnating, truck makers are now eyeing the light and medium-duty end of the industry for new growth potential, as recent statistics collated by the Australian Road Transport Suppliers’ Association (ARTSA) confirm. The ARTSA figures show that new registrations for heavy vehicles with a GVM above 12 tonnes declined 11 per cent in 2015 compared to 2014. Within that category, heavy trailers were down 20 per cent and prime movers dropped 12 per cent, while heavy rigid registrations rose three per cent. In the medium-duty category (4.5 to 12 tonne GVM), new registrations rose 4.8 per cent compared with 2014 – and again, rigid trucks stood out with a 6.4 per cent rise. “We’ve only been monitoring Australian commercial vehicle registration data for a two-year period, but the verdict is

clear – there was a contraction in new heavy vehicle registrations over the past 12 months that especially hurt the prime mover segment. Only rigid trucks saw growth,” says Dr Peter Hart, Chairman of ARTSA. “There are now about 210,000 medium-duty rigid trucks and about 170,000 heavy-duty rigid trucks delivering freight in Australia. In comparison, there are 52,000 registered single-trailer primemovers and 40,000 multi-combination prime-movers, so rigid trucks outnumber prime-mover by about 2 ½ to one.” He adds that in a market where retirement rates are accelerating – heavy vehicle retirements were up 37 per cent compared with 2014, whereas medium rigid retirements increased by 21 per cent – rigid trucks are now important contributors to fleet growth. One reason for the segment’s relative resilience to economic woes could be its inherent versatility, Peter says, with applications reaching from general freight deliveries through to concrete mixing. In fact, 21 per cent of the rigid market currently fall under the ‘special vehicle’ banner, indicating that applications for the construction and waste industry continue to be important drivers of growth within the segment, he explains. Peter also found that the annual growth rate for dog trailers over the past two years was a healthy 2.8 per cent, indicating the rigid and dog market will also provide growth potential over the coming season. As such – even though ARTSA estimates that potential to remain in single-digit territory in 2016 – Peter says rigid trucks are likely to remain one of the few growth drivers in the marketplace. “For a long time, the high-margin prime mover market was firmly at the centre of attention. [But] there is now a shift in focus to the rigid truck market, probably because of growth in local freight deliveries. This could be where future business will be made – especially now that retirement rates are rising and new equipment will be needed. “The medium age of a two-axle registered rigid truck in Australia is about 17 years now,” Peter adds. “And for a three-axle

According to Pack & Send CEO, Michael Paul, the company’s franchise model is key to ensuring a ‘premium service’ experience. “Our franchisees are our movers and shakers. They’re the faces of the overall business, and of their individual businesses too. As members of the communities they service, they play an integral role in the local marketing of Pack & Send,” he says. In contrast, the role of the franchisor is to provide franchisees with a solid foundation of business systems, or “small business with the tools of a big business,” as Michael puts it. 34

Q: Pack & Send has been around for a while now. Is the 2016 business still comparable to the one 22 years ago – for example, is parcel delivery still the core of the business? A: The Pack & Send business has changed tremendously since 1993. We started it before the notion of e-commerce, or even the Internet, was in the vernacular, so there has been a significant shift in the way we function. But our mission has always been the same – providing convenient access to a wide range of solutions when sending anything, anywhere. The types of services we can offer are now more varied, though – from traditional

Q: How did the parcel delivery industry change since the early days? With Toll IPEC, Star Track and emerging online services like Sendle on the scene, the competition must be fierce. A: The parcel delivery industry has evolved with the times. For example, customers today expect that a fundamental requirement of parcel delivery services is an online ‘track and trace’ function that provides a real time delivery status. When we started in 1993, no parcel carrier in Australia had that capability as the technology wasn’t yet in place. You had to phone the carrier to find out exactly where your parcel was – and you usually got a response the next day. In the early days, deliveries were also primarily B2B and very few deliveries were made to households. The growth of e-commerce has changed that, with significantly more B2C deliveries. In line with that, the competition has also changed – for example, where Pack & Send once relied either on customers walking in store or phoning us to send their goods, we are now developing new and
