Find out what it means to tradies

WHAT MAKES for a happy tradie?

Getting paid on time? Getting paid the right amount? Working with your mates? Actually enjoying the work? The tools themselves? Peace of mind?

You’ll get a different answer every time.

For many tradies – no matter the gender – it can boil down to simply feeling respected on-site.

Showing respect to your fellow tradie can go along way in making the day go just that bit smoother.

A lot of times, if you have beef with a fellow tradie, that beef’s only gonna get

worse when it hits the fan.

In this edition of The Tradie, we chat with a few tradies who’ve come to command a fair bit of respect on their worksites.

Tradies like Felicity Pettiford – a chippy who’s had to deal with plenty of rubbish in her short time in the industry. Instead of quitting altogether, she’s used her platform to tell tradies like her that they’re not alone in feeling marginalised, and that there’s a way forward if we work with each other rather than against. Change is around no matter where you are.

Our pro fishing guide Tim O’Reilly talks us through the balance of new technology and old school fishing, and how to take advantage of both to keep fishing fun. It’s also tax season, in case you hadn’t noticed. Why not spend your return on some new shiny tools? Our June/ July edition is loaded with

High-flying legends tackle world-first!

NO, THIS ISN’T another elaborate gender reveal.

What you’re looking at is a world-first. Austrian duo Marco Furst and Marco Waltenspiel became the first skydivers to fly wingsuits through London’s iconic Tower Bridge. I’m sure many an Aussie backpacker have dreamed of achieving this feat, but the Austrians got there first.

To start this grand exercise, Marco² leapt from a helicopter at 3000ft, reaching an insane speed of

freefallin’

246km/h, flying 35m across the River Thames, under the bridge before landing.

All up, this only took the pair 45 seconds, which is about the same amount of time we spend on household chores.

“It’s just insane to get this opportunity to fly through such a unique landmark - you see stunts like this in films, but to actually do it ourselves is amazing. It gives me goosebumps just talking about it,” Marco Waltenspiel said after the stunt.

‘Better’ just to hold it?

NAWIC’s

new campaign targeting

toilets

THE NATIONAL

Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) has just kicked off its most recent campaign – ‘Better’ Just to hold it?

For too long women and men have been required to travel to, share or use unsafe toilets, or have no access to toilets at all!

in Australia requires employers to provide ‘appropriate’ facilities. So what does this mean?

WHAT’S NEEDED

While government hasn’t designated what an appropriate toilet is – what they have said it that toilets should be:

capable of locking from each side of the cubicle

- Positioned to ensure privacy for users

- S eparate from any other room by an airlock, a sound-proof wall and separate entrance that is clearly marked

workplace, it is the responsibility of your employer to locate and provide access to a toilet, allowing additional time for travel in addision to your regular breaks. For remote workers, employers need to provide portable toilets, in a secure place with safe access.

DO YOU TOILETS MEET THESE STANDARDS?

Not being able to access safe toilets at work is a workplace safety risk. It’s your right to have accessible and safe toilets at your workplace – we need to take action

Brush with greatness

Celebrating painting’s present and future

OVER TWO DAYS, thousands of female and gender diverse students came to learn what a career in Painting and Decorating could look like. Students were given the opportunity to try their hand at woodgraining and sponging techniques. The students were fascinated that the woodgraining tool could produce patterns that look like real timber knots and grains. The MPA stand was extremely popular with the students, and most returned back to the stand to take home their masterpieces. Improving the gender and diversity representation in trades

is an important goal for creating more inclusive and equitable workplaces. Our Industry is fortunate to already have strong female participation but the Master Painters Association sees the advantage in expanding and creating more awareness to grow these numbers even more.

EXCELLENCE RECOGNISED

The Master Painters Association will also be supporting and promoting the Northern College of the Arts and Technology “Bring it On” project which is the empowerment of young school age women

to engage in a career in Trades and Technology. This project intends to give young women the opportunity to learn about study and career opportunities that have historically been male dominated. NCAT are dedicated to making sure that all young women graduating transition into apprenticeships or traineeships.

On Saturday May 4, the Master Painters Association of Victoria/ Tasmania held its annual Awards for Excellence where members had an opportunity to showcase their projects from the smallest decorative wall to multistorey projects. Achieving industry recognition in a category is significant with awards being presented to companies who had achieved High Distinctions for their projects. The

MPAV/Tas members were celebrated at its annual awards night (read more on page 81), including fourth year apprentice Brittany Delorenzo

Winners in each category were also presented on the night with some companies winning in multiple categories. The MPA congratulates all members who were recognised on the night for their outstanding projects. The highlight of the night was the Apprentice of the Year Awards. This year we had so many wonderful nominations that were all deserving of recognition and praise. Awards were presented to runners up and winners from 1st Year Apprentice of the Year through to 4th Year Apprentice of the Year. Female apprentices dominated, with three out of the four Winners being lady tradies. These young women are super proud to be apprentice painters and decorators and all have aspirations to develop their skills to the highest standards.

Build to produce

Productivity: An essential ingredient for sustainable Economic Growth

THE PRODUCTIVITY Commission’s recently released the Annual Productivity Bulletin 2024 shows that Australia’s labour productivity fell sharply in 2022-2023, as a record-breaking increase in hours worked failed to generate a corresponding increase in economic output. Labour productivity fell by 3.7 per cent – well below the long-term average growth rate of 1.3 per cent. This result was driven by a 6.9 per cent increase in hours worked by Australians – the highest annual increase in history. The capital-to-labour ratio also fell by 4.9 per cent in 2022-2023 – the highest recorded decline in Australia’s history. This means that while a record number of Australians

had jobs, employers did not invest in the equipment, tools and resources needed to fully realise employees’ skills and talents and turn our strong employment growth into strong productivity growth.

Similarly, the manufacturing industry saw a one per cent decrease in labour productivity and 1.1 per cent decline in overall output. Such statistics signal an urgent call for action to address these productivity challenges, particularly as the manufacturing industry remains a crucial pillar in the Australia’s economic framework.

SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH

Pr oductivity gains are essential for sustainable economic growth, and

they hinge on increasing efficiency rather than merely working harder or longer. With Australia’s labour force participation rate already at peak levels, further growth in income cannot be sustainably derived from just putting in more hours or increasing our workforce.

Productivity is essential to any nation’s economy, serving as a building block of prosperity. When productivity rises, more value is generated per hour of work, which translates to increased economic output and, consequently, higher standards of living. Productivity fuels economic growth without necessitating a proportional increase in input, such as labour or capital investment. This efficiency gain enables

an economy to expand its goods and services, reduce prices for consumers, and increase wages for workers without triggering inflationary pressures.

Robust productivity growth can lead to greater spending power for governments, allowing for enhanced public services or reduced taxes, and can create a surplus for investment in crucial areas like education, infrastructure and innovation. As a catalyst for global competitiveness, productivity growth is a necessary ingredient of sustained economic vitality and social advancement.

PRODUCTIVITY IN AUSTRALIA’S WELDING INDUSTRY

Recognising the significance of productivity to the broader economy sets the stage for a closer look at the welding

industry, where its importance is equally critical for driving growth and innovation.

Streamlining operations to complete welding tasks more efficiently translates directly into cost savings and competitive pricing. Productivity is often synonymous with quality. Advances in welding techniques and technology not only boost the rate of production but also enhance the quality and repeatability of the welds themselves. This reduces rework, bolstering a company’s reputation and operational efficiency. Effective resource utilisation is another by-product of heightened productivity. When operations are optimised, material, labour, and equipment are used to their fullest potential, minimising waste and fostering a leaner

inventory management system. This efficiency extends to energy consumption and consumable use, for improved sustainability. From a client perspective, heightened productivity equates to expedited project completion times. This is crucial for meeting delivery deadlines, maintaining a solid customer service record, and ensuring repeat business. It also influences safety standards within the industry; efficient workflows reduce the exposure of workers to potential hazards, thereby lowering the incidence of workplace accidents.

Innovation, too, is a natural outgrowth of a focus on productivity. As companies strive for improved processes, they are often propelled to adopt cutting-edge technologies and methodologies, potentially unlocking new business opportunities and market expansions.

MEASURING PRODUCTIVITY IN THE WELDING INDUSTRY

So then, how is productivity measured in the welding industry? Among various metrics, arc-on time per welder per shift is a significant indicator of performance. Firstly, arc-on time directly correlates with

output. Welding is a manufacturing process, and like any such process, the time spent actively working on the product determines the speed and volume of output. By measuring arc-on time, companies can quantify the active time welders spend creating value, enabling a clear view of their contribution to production targets. Secondly, tracking arc-on time encourages operational efficiency. It prompts a closer look at how time is managed, pushing for a reduction in idle periods and optimising workflow and processes. It is not uncommon to find that a substantial portion of a welder’s day is consumed by activities that do not include welding, such as setting up, grinding and cleaning. Identifying and minimising these periods can significantly enhance overall productivity.

Understanding arc-on time can guide workforce development and training programs. By analysing this metric, a company can identify skill gaps and training needs, ensuring that welders are proficient and can maximise their arc-on time. This focus on skill enhancement not only boosts productivity but also promotes a culture of continuous improvement and professional development within the workforce.

For varying labour hours, the operating factor is also an important metric - it gives a more accurate indication of a workshop’s productivity. To determine the operating factor, a simple sum is used: arc-on time divided by total labour hours, multiplied by 100.

The average operating factor in Australia is currently 20 per cent. The operating factor is an indication of how much of a welder’s day is actually spent welding.

WELD AUSTRALIA’S PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENT

PROJECTS

Weld Australia is set to undertake two projects designed to improve the productivity of Australia’s welding and fabrication industry.

Our first project will involve the measurement of welder productivity as defined by the number of arc-on time per welder per shift.

According to member reports, the average arc-on time for a welder in Australia is approximately two hours. However, in countries such as Germany and the United States (which have equivalent Workplace Health and Safety standards to Australia), industry works on an average of five hours on-arc per welder per day. This is obviously a marked difference.

Simplistically, if Australia could increase its productivity to internationally competitive rates, we could effectively double the welding capacity of our industry. This would go a long way to solving the issue of labour shortages and capacity constraints.

Weld Australia will undertake in-depth

research into Australia’s welding practices and productivity, and compare this to the situation in Germany and the United States. We will then review possible solutions, such as leveraging Trades Assistants to complete tasks like griding, set up and cleaning, or using robots and cobots.

The second project Weld Australia is working on is a productivity based training scheme. Under this program, Weld Australia would help fabrication businesses conduct their own staff training. We would provide advanced learning resources, train their trainer, accredit their training facility, and then certify welders according to ISO 9606 or AS/NZS ISO 1554.

Fabrication companies would be able to quickly qualify production welders able to successfully undertake fillet welds, rather than waiting three years or more for a Certificate III or IV trained welder. Weld Australia is currently seeking grant funding, which would enable us to implement the project at little to no cost for members.

If you would like to be involved in Weld Australia’s Productivity Improvement Projects, please contact Cornelis Van Niekerk (Business Manager, Weld Australia) via c.vanniekerk@ weldaustralia.com.au or 0409 609 031.

Conversations being had around improving diversity

IT HAS BEEN a busy few months for us as conference season is well underway. Empowered Women in Trades (EWIT) has been meeting with a huge number of companies, from small contracting businesses to

the largest manufacturing and construction corporations at events like Sydney Build and the Future of Construction Summit in Brisbane. At a completely different end of the spectrum, we also hosted stands at the Trades & Tech Fit Careers Expo and the South East Careers Expo – where we connected with thousands of high school students to demonstrate what a rewarding career skilled trades can be.

FACE-TO-FACE

EWIT is the intersection of these important relationships. At one end we are speaking with industry - companies who need more skilled and enthusiastic tradies and apprentices to meet the vast needs of an industry suffering from skills

shortages - and at the other end, we spend days at a time in our programs meeting women and gender-diverse people who are trying to decide on a career path. People who aren’t yet aware of the fantastic opportunities represented by trades. It is exhilarating to be the connecting tissue between these two groups – because we are living every day at the nexus of the potential and the opportunities that each provides.

BRICK BY BRICK

We are often asked how organisations can get involved. EWIT fights to create these opportunities and connect the elements to solve industry needs. To succeed we need the industry to support the activities we provide.

We have just launched a new initiative to allow businesses who wish to support us and the programs we run to bring more women to skilled trades. Called Alliance Membership, it provides an opportunity for all organisations large and small to directly support EWIT programs. Alliance Members promote their support of a diverse skilled workforce through the activities we provide the industry, and their support enables us to focus on creating the valuable connections that will bring more women and

gender-diverse humans into skilled trades. If you would like to find out more about Alliance membership visit the EWIT website (ewitrades.com).

We believe programs like this are vital because the duplication of effort to provide opportunities for women in the industry has become both inefficient and it is slowing progress. By supporting EWIT services our partners not only demonstrate their commitment, they ensure that we can continue to do the work to coordinate with the government, support industry and create pathways for women into trades. Creating the most sustainable and best industry for the future. It is estimated that 486,000 new workers are needed in the construction industry alone by 2026. Our target of 30 per cent female representation by 2030 addresses this vital goal but we need the support and coordinated efforts of our village.

The Straight TrimMaster highlights an upgrade in ergonomics across all of Paslode’s latest tools, which makes using them at different angles as comfortable as possible

TALKER

What makes Paslode’s Straight Trim-Master Upgrade™ a triple threat

Flexibility isn’t something most tools are known for.

Well, that’s all about to change as Paslode unleashes its latest Straight TrimMaster™ Upgrade™, which opens up a whole new world for tradies doing both cladding and fix out jobs. It also represents a new era of innovation, rounding out a modern family of Paslode tools for the modern carpenter.

When it comes to the ultimate trim tool for carpenters, Paslode’s latest Straight Trim-Master stands head and shoulder above its competition.

It marks a massive upgrade for tradies working on steel or timber fix outs as well as cladding.

Not only does this Straight Trim-Master shoot 16ga and 14ga brads, it also shoots the new 15ga Steel Frame brads as well.

With one tool, tradies can be shooting big 14ga brads for structural cladding, swap over to workhorse 16ga brads for interior work such as skirting boards, and then shoot 15ga Steel Frame brads for steel frame fix outs.

Paslode Innovation and New Product Development Manager Pete Johnston said the Straight TrimMaster truly is the three-in-one package.

“With this tool, you’ve got that flexibility whether you’re working on steel frame houses or timber houses,” he said.

20 THE TRADIE
Images: Paslode Australia and Prime Creative Media

Tradies working on exterior cladding with fibre cement can use the Straight Trim-Master with the peace of mind that it’s delivering a powerful and accurate shot each time

“You’ve got a range of fasteners that can do the job on the inside of the house – timber or steel – as well as the outside of the house.”

Pete added that the newest Straight Trim-Master has been specially designed to make cladding work easier with 14ga brads thanks to it’s new driver pin design. This makes it adept at shooting into fibre cement materials such as James Hardie™ and Weathertex.

EN-GAUGED

Versatility is not the only advantage of the Straight TrimMaster brings to the table. Paslode Australia Product Manager Paul Carter said it uses rigid dosing to ensure each shot is as powerful as the last.

“We used to have a flap on the back that didn’t have these steel prongs,” he said.

“With these steel prongs, it operates similar to an engine carburettor versus fuel injection – it means you’re getting the same amount of fuel every time which means it delivers the same drive to the drive blade.”

As with all Paslode tools, the development of latest Straight Trim-Master relied heavily on the feedback of everyday tradies to fine-tune it.

Paul said one pain point consistent for tradies across Australia was older tools would often have more tolerance and leave timber ‘bruised’ after shooting.

“With old tools, the driver blade was slipping off and bruising the timber or moulding,” he said.

“We dug into that to find out why it was happening. As we got closer, we looked at the tolerances around the nose and found that older models had more tolerances left and right with the firing pin.

“So, we started to tighten that up which delivered that force really nicely into the nail without slipping off so there’s no bruising on the timber.”

IRONCLAD(ING) INNOVATION

The Straight Trim-Master marks the latest in Paslode’s journey to update carpenters’ toolkits.

Whether it’s the TrimMaster Angle, PPN-Master or Steel Frame Brads – Paslode ensures it brings the best of the modern power tool into each nailer.

“We’re dedicated to professional tradespeople … so we’re always striving to improve the durability and reliability of the tools to work as hard as their user,” Pete said.

Steel or timber fix outs –the Straight Trim-Master handles both like a pro

21 THE TRADIE

FROM THE FRONT

“Visually, the whole family looks complete, and on-site it brings it into a more modern look.

“It’s not just about the look though – there are some key benefits that the design principles of the tools such as improved weight and consistent accuracy.”

From ergonomic upgrades to developing specialised driver pins for each tool to maximise shooting power/ accuracy – there’s updates at every turn.

Things like converting Paslode’s trim tool range to use grease instead of oil demonstrates the company’s drive to shave as much time off maintenance and stoppages as possible.

“Trim tools are used in a very dusty environment and our aim was to minimise the dust that gets into the cylinder and glugs up the lubricant,” he said.

shots at which point they can take it into a service agent who’ll replace the grease in the cylinder.”

Paul said he understood many tradies had grown fond of their tools, but when it came time to turn a new leaf, they could do so with the utmost confidence they were getting a true upgrade.

“It’s not uncommon for us to hear from people saying their Paslode tools are 10-15 years old,” Paul said.

“Every now and again, you’ll need to replace them. A lot of tradies have had their Paslode tools since their apprenticeships.

“It’s good to have the visual upgrades in place, but for us it’s more about performance and ensuring that we’re delivering the right tweaks.

Paslode’s Steel Frame Brads were another massive addition to its offerings as they are specially designed to eliminate the need to use glue during a steel fix out

“On the new trim range, with our factory lubricants, all they need to do is clean the filter and degrease the spark unit and then put it back together.

“It will run as new right up to between 40,000-60,000

“We know our tools are good and are renowned for having long lives, we always want to make improvements on the tools as each new iteration is released(?).”

A PIN DROP

With the Straight Trim-Master Upgrade, Paslode brings its most unique and versatile tool yet to bear on both fixing and cladding jobs.

Tips for staying in shape mentally

Tradie wellness coach Aaron Huey talks through some common issues tradies might encounter, but not want to talk about

Q: I’M WORRIED ABOUT TAKING TIME OFF FOR MENTAL HEALTH REASONS BECAUSE I’M THE PRIMARY BREADWINNER FOR MY FAMILY. HOW CAN I TALK TO MY EMPLOYER ABOUT THIS WITHOUT RISKING MY JOB SECURITY?

A: It’s understandable to have concerns about job security, especially when your family’s financial stability is at stake. Consider having an honest conversation with your employer about your situation. Highlight your dedication to your work and emphasise that taking time off for mental health reasons is crucial for your ability to continue performing well in the long term. Many employers have policies in place to support employees’ mental health needs, and they may be more

understanding than you expect.

Q: AS A TRADESMAN, I OFTEN FACE HIGHPRESSURE SITUATIONS AND TIGHT DEADLINES. ARE THERE QUICK STRESS-RELIEF TECHNIQUES I CAN USE ON THE JOB TO HELP MANAGE MY MENTAL HEALTH?

A: Absolutely. Simple stress-relief techniques like deep breathing exercises, taking short breaks to stretch or walk around, and practicing mindfulness can be done discreetly on the job. Additionally, finding a trusted co-worker or supervisor to talk to when feeling overwhelmed can provide immediate relief and support.

Q: I’M CONCERNED THAT OPENING UP ABOUT

MY MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLES AT WORK MIGHT MAKE ME SEEM LESS RELIABLE OR CAPABLE IN THE EYES OF MY CO-WORKERS. HOW CAN I ADDRESS THIS STIGMA?

A: It’s understandable to worry about how others might perceive you, especially in a maledominated industry like construction. However, by speaking openly about your experiences and struggles, you may actually encourage others to do the same. Consider starting small by sharing your story with a trusted co-worker or supervisor. Over time, as more people see the strength and courage it takes to speak up, the stigma surrounding mental health in the workplace may begin to diminish.

Q: WHAT RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE TO HELP ME COPE WITH THE EMOTIONAL TOLL OF BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES, ESPECIALLY AFTER A LONG DAY ON THE JOB?

A: Finding ways to decompress and recharge after a long day at work is crucial for maintaining mental well-being, especially when juggling family responsibilities. Consider engaging in

activities that help you unwind and connect with your family, such as going for a walk together, playing games, or simply having quality time to talk and relax. Additionally, seeking support from friends, family members, or a therapist can provide valuable emotional support during challenging times.

Q: HOW CAN I ENSURE THAT MY CHILDREN UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTAL HEALTH AND FEEL COMFORTABLE TALKING TO ME ABOUT THEIR OWN STRUGGLES IN THE FUTURE?

A: Leading by example is key. By openly discussing your own mental health and demonstrating healthy coping strategies, you’re setting a positive example for your children. Encourage open communication by creating a safe and non-judgmental environment where your children feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings. Let them know that it’s okay to ask for help when needed, and re-assure them that you’re always there to support them.

Modern change in an ancient pastime

In this article, Tim O’Reilly shares a guide's perspective on changes happening in the recreational fishing scene. A look back at the quintessentials of recreational fishing and comparing that to some of the changes we are seeing.

Words and Images: Tim

So, what about fishing is changing?

It’s funny how subtle change can be. Even when it’s occurring at break-neck speed. Fishing by its nature has become a sport of specialisation. It is almost impossible to say you love all types of modern fishing. There are simply too many, each discipline requiring specific sets of equipment and temperament to become proficient. Fishing as a pastime is lucky to have so many passionate and influential champions. As modern management debate rages, this will be crucial if recreational fishing is to survive as a pastime.

My earliest fishing memories involve catching tiny whiting on a beach worm in the surf shore break. Digging pipis from the sand, pumping yabbies and generally trying to sneak away from the world at every moment to follow my fishy dreams. Things haven’t changed so much. But the advancement in equipment, techniques and the technology have left the face of fishing far smoother then when I was a child. Unblemished? Well, let’s take a closer look. Trying to cover all bases as a fisher is made all the more challenging with disruptive and brilliant technologies. Simply keeping up with the Tech is challenge enough. As times change and fishing grows even more specialised, there will be a whole undercurrent within the fishing fraternity keen to get back to basics. To fish with simple tech and gear, using their senses more than their electronics. Everyone knows that kid that was mad about fishing. There is one in every fifth family! That fishing crazed individual who used to blow whole weekends in the pursuit of anything aquatic.

Fishing is fishing because you never know what will happen next

FEATURE 28 THE TRADIE

Those kids grew up to be the first wave of fishing influences, journalists, photographers and adventurers. Most were admired for their toughness and resolve in reaching frontier fisheries.

These characters spurred many of us on to bigger an better things. They are the reason recreational fishing in Australia has been such a flourishing pass time. It promotes good health, family values and for the most part, a healthy regard for the aquatic environment. Most would agree there is a degree of adventure and ‘life’s good’ type feelings which stem from fishing. But a few sticking points in the future of recreational fishing will breed a wave of discontent.

Happily, fishing has opened up to a far greater subset of the community within its ranks. Those who don’t even come from a family fishing background (which was normally a prerequisite) can participate fully. Fishing has attracted this strong following for its purity and ability to get people outdoors in natural settings.

Fishing as a pursuit has always existed for the everyday man, woman or child to catch their own feed of fish. This needs to be remembered as the fate of fishing falls into more bureaucratic modern hands. Now with so centered upon the focal point of just a few individuals, some of the essence of fishing is being lost. As click bait out fishes live bait, many of our future heroes are being left behind. Of coarse, this is impossible to quantify and represents just a personal viewpoint.

Granted, there is some very cool stuff getting captured and shared amongst a booming fishing fraternity.

Modern photography and shareability have really put

FEATURE

A little bit of equipment can take you a long way

things in the hands of the common man. This makes for very entertaining viewing. But it becomes increasingly hard to pull a hero from the pack and even harder to find one untainted by product. The fishing influencer space has suddenly become very convoluted. Sadly, for those who fiddle around the edges of it, there is only so much bread at the table.

As with all things web based, the tech heads tend to rise to prominence and so it has become with recreational fishing. Those old school fishing tragics are no longer who the kid at the boat ramp wants to yarn with. Instead, it’s a slick fishing hero on Instagram. And why not, social media has invited all of us to the same table even if some can exploit it better then others. A lack of caution about messaging and who is sending that message might emerge as a major issue over coming years. Especially with the arrows pointing at leisure and pastime pursuits that many city folk will never understand.

At the same time, fishing as a pursuit has lost some of its darker qualities which included plundering of resources and taking far more then what was needed. Gladly the mass cull images are a thing of the past. But still within the essence of fishing lies the need to be fed by nature’s hand. Fishing has always been a balance between man and nature, between what’s there and what is right to take.

But if you leave out the FISHING part and technology allows you simply to TAKE, something is being lost. There is more and more people vying for less and less fish with greater use of technology. This has a sticky end which can only be combatted through strict regulation. Commercial fishers have well and truly had a taste of what’s to come. Fisherman as a whole detest regulations upon their pursuit but all who participate can see the need for it. Do nothing and we go the way of crashing fish stocks around the globe.

Fisheries management is very important to get right, it affects our nation’s psyche. Preferably it would be a light touch and regulation. However modern society demands far more stringent approach and anglers will find themselves more and more maligned by bureaucrats. This follows with trouble from animal rights activists and the list goes on and on. Locked out of our own waterways and maritime areas is where this scenario ends and quite quickly at the rate of change currently being witnessed.

So, it is right to have serious debate about the future of fishing. When is enough, enough when it comes to technology? When will recreational fishers start selfimposing restrictions upon themselves? The challenge that awaits the recreational fishing industry in Australia and around the world is how regulated do you wish to become. Over-regulate and you drive people away from their favoured pastime.

Under-regulate and watch fisheries collapse under the weight of coastal population explosion.

My fear is fishing breaks so far from its fundamental roots that the pastime becomes a steamrolled mess of past memorabilia and Insta Reels. Those who would see fishing banned as a pastime would have a field day. Just lean hard left and point at a flashy, techy, fuel guzzling boat with every gadget known to man hanging from it to have the pastime counter-cultured. If fishing loses its fundamental nature altogether, what glue will be there to keep the whole show together?

High-tech and low-tech

For the purposes of this discussion, let’s refer to High Tech as any piece of technology that requires modern digital software and a motherboard to operate. This includes everything from our phones and devices to sounders, plotters and radars.

As we can all attest, there has been a rapid rise in the use of high-tech equipment to make the pastime of fishing tilted in the angler’s balance. Ask yourself this… what would prior generations have thought about the use of live scope and active target? Where you can simply view the fish swimming around underneath the water in real time on a screen. The technology was already incredible, now it is step-jumping straight to ridiculous.

A blurry line exists between the computer world, the simulated world and the real-life natural world in front of us. As fishing continues to spread its feet under so many doors, it will be a huge challenge trying to create limitations and societal norms. It seems many are up for whatever the future brings, damned be the consequences. I question if these same people driving such rapid advancement really have our pastime’s best interests at heart.

Low tech refers to mechanical things such a rods, reels, hooks, sinkers and swivels, oars, knives, esky, life jackets and the list goes on and on. Accompanying these workhorse type items on the low tech side we have the calendar, tide tables, moon phases and even the almanac. All these incremental changes in technology to drive sophistication in recreational fishing. Low tech and mechanical motors were pretty much the norm for much of modern fishing’s past.

30 THE TRADIE

Nobody is suggesting we un-invent the wheel. People love the modernisation of recreational fishing on the whole but at some point, there needs to be self-reflection and humanity incorporated. If you lose the image of a grandfather and child sitting on a peer soaking a prawn and catching dinner, then the very foundations begin rotting away. Sadly this image has already begun to fade, replaced with a 10-second soundbite on social media of epic captures made by someone who never touched a piece of bait in their life.

The Future of Rec Fishing

As with all great debates, the questions and possible answers are endless. It has been amusing watching social media light up in recent times on this issue. There are numerous camps to be in on so many subjects. For me personally I look through the lens of the recreational fishing charter industry. My view is a little narrow and perhaps long-sighted. This stems from fears of food falling off my table with reduced charter clients. I try to keep an open mind and not chastise others for their decisions.

But as more specialised technology gives those using it distinct advantage, I think it’s fair to debate. Can societal norms limit the endless precision provided by modern gadgetry or will the specialists win out? Can low tech fishos somehow avoid the pitfalls of what’s to come regarding regulation if they make certain choices? What part does the competitive nature of fishing take in all this and can it be used to combat advancements. What combinations of high-tech and low tech are possible without unsetting the balance of Recreational Fishing? As eskies and chilly bins are replaced by Solar panels, deep cycle batteries and electric fridges, what is being gained and what is being lost. As traditional depth sounders and plotters are replaced with high tech bathymetry, spot lock and live scope, where does this journey end. Will we be pressing a button shortly that simply reads ‘catch fish’ as the mechanical and computerised tech becomes integrated?

You might laugh at this scenario but contemplate for a moment where we have come from 10 years ago compared with now. All who love the pastime of fishing should have equal voice in shaping its future. To thrive, I believe recreational fishing needs to keep a keen eye to ensure we don’t stray too far from the quintessential nature of our endeavour.

Felicity’s life as a tradie sees almost every minute dedicated to being a chippy, but she loves it

this out Chick

Felicity steps up to change the narrative

She may only be 21, but Felicity Pettiford has already experienced the full spectrum of tradie life, good and bad. She tells The Tradie about her journey as a woman in trades, and how she uses her platform as the Sydney Builder Chick to empower others.

THERE WASN’T really a moment where Felicity didn’t want to be tradie. When choosing her high school electives, she bucked the trend and chose timber and construction instead of textiles and hospitality.

“I was the first girl to do construction as an elective

at my high school,” Felicity said.

“I was definitely trying to enter new territory and try new things.”

That wasn’t the first time

Felicity was the only girl in the ‘boys room’, and it certainly wasn’t the last.

As the end of high school neared, she undertook a

new challenge – securing an apprenticeship.

“Finding an apprenticeship was super difficult,” she said.

“I called more than 100 businesses to try and get an apprenticeship, and before I knew it, I eventually found one.”

What would normally be

a fairly straightforward entry into tradie life was far from it for Felicity, who continued to “cop a lot of crap” for being a woman in a male-dominated industry.

“There’d be times where I’d have issues with people on-site, or I didn’t feel safe or respected,” she said.

“I kept saying to myself ‘if I want to be a tradie so badly, I’d push through it’.”

It took a few goes, but Felicity was eventually

Felicity has been a strong advocate for both Carpentry Australia and Empowered Women in Trades

able to find a company she enjoyed working for – All About Carpentry, where she could get on with the job.

“It’s not the job itself, it’s the people you surround yourself with,” she said.

“If I’m working with a company that doesn’t have a good culture, then obviously the job isn’t going to be.”

From a lot of grief Felicity has endured, she’s been able to build her profile to help educate and support her fellow tradies.

Her business – Sydney Builder Chick – serves as both her weekend job as well as a chance to showcase her many carpentry endeavours.

“I was just posting photos and content of what I do at work, and just

sharing my story on social media,” Felicity said.

“It ended up becoming really popular, really quickly.

“It grew into not only my business but a platform for women to reach out, network as well as connect with.”

When she’s not on deck working with All About Carpentry, Felicity is working weekends as Sydney Builder Chick.

“It’s a lot, but you’ve got to get somewhere in life – whether it’s working my arse off to create content or passing my knowledge and skills on to the next generation, it will turn out positive,” she said.

“There’s so many women who want to do what I do,

and they can if they stay dedicated, committed and want to learn.”

Her work on and off the tools has made Felicity one of Carpentry Australia’s most prominent ambassadors.

BIGGER PICTURE

From working on projects with Carpentry Australia to chatting all things tradie at the Sydney Build expo, Felicity relishes the chance to help grow the industry.

“Being the Sydney Builder Chick definitely opened up as more than just a business, it’s absolutely opened up for women and men in trades seeking guidance,” she said.

Builder Chick quickly grew to new heights Felicity never dreamed of

Felicity was diagnosed with dyslexia from at a young age, but she said it’s helped her be honest, straightforward and raw in the way she carries herself

Most recently, Felicity was named Tradie Lady of the Year 2024 by Empowered Women in Trades (EWIT).

Still in her early 20s –Felicity said she’s far from done.

“I did not expect to get to where I am today,” she added.

“The pace continues to pick up, but I always say I want to leave this earth, I want to make my mark by increasing women participation in trades and helping those who need it most.

“If you asked me five years ago, I’d have told you I just wanted to be a carpenter.

“To already be where I

am at such a young age –it’s such an achievement for myself and I definitely celebrate that. Now I’m on to bigger and better things.”

CARPE DIEM

While women still represent only a small

portion of tradespeople in Australia, people like Felicity are determined to push that percentage in the right direction.

She said female tradies need more support during their apprenticeships, stating many have had similar experiences to her.

“We’re seeing an increase of women getting into trades, but not staying throughout,” she said.

“I think it’s about getting women into trades, and making sure they’re supported step-bystep throughout their apprenticeship.”

Fully-loaded Bar Crusher 780XT fishing weapon!

WE’VE SEEN SOME seriously impressive Fishing Weapons over the years, but Tasmanian Johnny Austin’s insane install could take the cake! The Tradie recently caught up with Johnny to check out his fully-loaded Bar Crusher 780XT… Johnny’s goal was to make his boat the most tech’ed up Bar Crusher 780XT in the country!

With a massive 24-inch Garmin GPS Map display on the console, a FLIR M232 night vision camera on the T-top and a Garmin Force Kraken trolling

motor up front, it’s hard not to appreciate the technology onboard this boat.

“As you can see it’s fairly well fitted out; we’ve got the twin Yamaha 200s, Helm Master EX and a fair bit of Garmin gear throughout the boat... It’s a good thing,” he said.

BUILT TO DELIVER

This isn’t Johnny’s first Bar Crusher, either. After previously owning a Bar Crusher 730 hardtop, Johnny was sold on the performance and fishability of Bar Crusher’s

hardtop centre console (XT) series.

“In 2020 I purchased a new 730 hardtop and I put 880 hours on it in a couple of years and thought: ‘Right, it’s time to upgrade!’

“I’m a centre console fan, so thought I’m going to do it: I’m going to get one and I’m going to go the whole hog and this is what I’ve done”, Johnny said. Even though some might question the practicality of a centre console boat in Tasmania, Johnny had his reasons...

“I live in Tasmania, which everyone thinks I’m a bit crazy for buying a centre console, but I do a lot of fishing down the West Coast; a lot of crays, so we do a lot of ring trapping, diving and now that we’ve

got a lot of tuna around Tasmania that are also popping up across the Bass Strait, I can just pop out the front [of Burnie] and use the casting deck and flick stickbaits at them all day long and have a great time!

“I think the fact that we can fish every part of the XT is the drawcard.

“It’s just set up perfect [for fishing]... get up the front and do a bit of fishing, if I want to get down the back I can – I’ve got plenty of room.

“I’ve got so much storage up the front...

Underneath [the casting deck] is a permanently mounted dive compressor and hookah line, I’ve got a fridge.

“It’s just got everything I need”, Johnny said.

SEA DEMON

With a custom pearl white wrap and twin pearl white Yamaha F200 outboards, Johnny’s Bar Crusher is equally impressive-looking on the outside, too.

“We went with the twin white Yamaha 200s. I knew I wanted a white boat so thought, well, perfect combination! It looked good and then we got the boat wrapped in the same pearl to match the engines and absolutely love it!”

With 400 horsepower and Bar Crusher’s smooth Waveslicer deep-V hull design, Johnny reckons his 780XT performs as good as it looks!

“Performance-wise, it’s phenomenal.

“We’re getting about 1.4 kilometres a litre at about 60 kilometres an hour... Really happy with the fuel consumption, it is ridiculous”, he said.

“It’s so much fun, it’s brilliant!”

The all-new MY24 MT-09 delivers fun in a more refined package

BACK IN 2013, Yamaha unleashed a triple cylinder street bike that quickly gained a reputation among throttle jockeys. The launch of this new MT-09 took place on some pretty average Croatian roads that helped the rear end step out on a whiff of throttle. The combination of a powerful 849cc triple motor and nimble chassis

on the concrete surfaces meant that rear wheel traction was hard to come by.

Fast forward to 2024 and the MT-09 is still the lead wrist’s choice… but those original larrikins are all grown up now and demand more. And Yamaha has delivered more with a bike that’s more refined and easier

to ride… yet still offers heaps of fun. And this time the tuning fork team avoided the slippery roads around Split and ran the media introduction on Lanzarote’s grippier asphalt.

SUPER SOAKER

At the heart of the new bike beats an 890cc triple cylinder crossplane

crank motor that delivers heaps of instant, linear power. This engine is an absolute peach and has been tuned for sound with tank-mounted induction outlets positioned to amplify the three-pot music. Power delivery is enough for the most experienced weekend warrior and is controllable via customisable power mapping.

The new MT-09 is now more comfortable being pushed to its limits – and those limits now extend even further. The front end is more responsive and engaging and the riding position is lower and more sporty than the old MT-09. These changes allow you to get over the front end more for improved grip and feedback without being too cramped.

The forks are now equipped with a stiffer spring and the front end has a slightly more aggressive geometry, which offers a more precise feeling on corner entry, and helps the MT-09 maintain a tight line when leant over. Although the suspension is firmer at the front, the

rear has been softened off slightly for increased bump compliance. Should you feel the need for a more high-end suspension package, the MT-09SP will be available soon with a higher spring rate Öhlins shock and 41mm DLCcoated KYB forks.

Braking is on point with a new-spec Brembo master cylinder that improves the feel through the front brake lever and offers more bite on the initial pull.

POWER PURR

But it’s that potent engine that is the star of the show – with 93Nm on tap in a seemingly endless, linear delivery. This delivery is amplified by a new third gen quickshifter that allows silky smooth clutchless gear changes. When combined with the unreal intake howl from those tank-mounted acoustic grilles you’ll find yourself tapping on the

gearshifter to create your own moto symphony.

As far as bells and whistles go, the MT-09 pushes the envelope with a full suite of electronic rider aids. You have the option of four engine power modes where Sport Mode 1 gives you instant, aggressive power. Street Mode 2 is still responsive without the initial snappiness, while Rain Mode 3 is designed for wet weather. There are a further two modes that you can customise to suit your riding style and mood.

In addition to the maps, the MT-09 comes packed with a wide range of rider controls. A six-axis IMU powers lean angle sensitive three mode traction control system, slide control, wheelie control and a new backslip regulator to stabilise the bike on downshifts. There’s even a neat cruise control system which

might seem like something your old man would run in his family saloon - but if you want to keep your licence it’s a key feature.

TRICKED UP

Controls can be selected using new switchgear via a bigger 5in TFT dash with connectivity as standard. Yamaha has also specced ‘soft click’ self-cancelling indicators and there’s a USB-C charger under the seat.

Styling is all-new and is a personal choice but has been well received. Especially the new smaller projector headlight that gives the frontal aspect a more menacing look.

Back when it was launched the MT-09 showed great potential and was generally accepted as a fun machine designed to appeal to fast street riders. Now those original owners are ten years older and want more than a bike

that brings out the inner stunt rider. Yamaha has delivered exactly that. Refinements to the chassis, suspension and riding position now allow for even quicker and more precise riding. And while the latest electronics package might appear to control antisocial behaviour, the reality is now you have the option to ride as fast and loose as you want. On private roads of course.

The new updated MT-09 is available now at Yamaha dealers in three colours –Midnight Cyan, Icon Blue and Tech Black priced $17,399 inc GST ride away. A wide range of genuine accessories are available to personalise your bike. But underneath the styling and whatever accessories are fitted, the MT-09 has retained its original identity. Because even with a new set of clothes and a fresh stance – a hoon is still a hoon.

The latest Cat® 255 and 265 Compact Track Loaders

BUILDING ON D3 series compact track loader success, the all-new, next generation Cat® 255 and 265 Compact Track Loaders are a ground-up redesign of the previous series, improving on the features that made the previous models so popular.

The first next generation models in the compact track loader line, the 255 and 265 elevate Caterpillar’s loader reputation through improved engine performance, lift and tilt performance, stability, operator comfort and technology.

“We kept the DNA of the D3 series while reimagining the possibilities of loader performance using voice of customer feedback to lead the way,” Caterpillar product application specialist Trevor Chase said. “Both next generation models leverage the many benefits offered by the vertical lift design. The new Cat 255 replaces the 259D3, while the 265 replaces both the 279D3 and 289D3 machines.”

All Cat next generation compact track loaders are identified by the ending

model number 5. The simplified nomenclature uses the middle number to represent machine size with larger numbers designating larger machines.

A NEW PERFORMANCE STANDARD

The new 255 and 265 loaders are powered by Cat C2.8T and Cat C2.8TA engines respectively, which offer 74.3 hp (55.4 kW). The new engines maintain horsepower across a wider RPM range and boast significant torque increases – gains of 13 per cent for the 255 and 43 per cent for the 265 – for improved working performance.

A redesigned engine compartment mounts the engine and cooling package lower into the frame for improved

stability, giving the operator confidence in handling heavy loads and throughout all aspects of the work cycles.

The new 255 loader delivers class-leading lift height, and compared to the 259D3, delivers 36 per cent more tilt breakout, 26 per cent higher lift breakout force and a 24 per cent increase in rated operating capacity (ROC). Height to the B-pin for the 265, compared to the 289D3, increases by 7.6 in (193 mm), resulting in a class-leading maximum lift height of 11 ft (3.35 m) for easier truck loading. The 265 also delivers 19 per cent higher tilt breakout force and 22 per cent higher lift breakout force. Standard hydraulic system pressure is increased to 3,500 psi (24130 kPa). New for these

next generation machines, the closed-centre auxiliary hydraulic system allows the 255 and 265 to operate all Cat Smart Attachments, including the Cat Smart Dozer Blade, with the standard auxiliary hydraulics provided.

For machines equipped with Standard Flow, both models are shipped from the factory outfitted as ‘High Flow ready’. The High Flow functionality is easily activated via a new software enabled attachment (SEA), permitting on-machine or remote activation of increased hydraulic flow to 30 gpm (113 l/min) at the standard system pressure.

44 THE TRADIE ON
THE MOVE

The High Flow XPS factory option increases auxiliary hydraulic system pressure to 4061 psi (28000 kPa) for both models, while also increasing the hydraulic flow to 30 gal/min (113 l/ min) for the 255 and 34 gal/ min (129 l/min) for the 265. The 255 equipped with the High Flow XPS option offers customers classleading auxiliary hydraulic performance not before available in a mid-size chassis machine.

Reengineering of lower machine components results in a stronger and stiffer undercarriage for improved machine stability and less pitching when filling the bucket with material. Its torsion suspension undercarriage delivers better operator comfort, track wear and material retention, plus the stiffer design results in smoother graded surfaces.

The 255 loader offers a new 12.6-in (320-mm) bar-tread narrow track option.

IMPROVED OPERATOR’S OFFICE

Both the Cat 255 and 265 Compact Track Loaders feature a larger cab design with 22 per cent more overall volume and 26 per cent additional foot space. With a 2.75-in (70-mm) increased interior width, the new cab expands footwell-to-ceiling height by 1.8 in (46 mm) and allows for an additional 1.5 in (40 mm) of hip room and 1.1 in (28 mm) more width between the joysticks for improved operator comfort.

A range of new mechanical and air-ride

suspension seat options are available for the 255 and 265 loaders, including a high-comfort seat that is both ventilated and heated. New auto temperature control plus vent outlet positioning above the operator helps the new HVAC system to quickly cool the cab’s interior.

Next generation loaders are equipped with either a 5-in (127-mm) standard LCD monitor or an 8-in (203-mm) advanced touchscreen monitor, depending on the technology package selected. Like the D3 series’ advanced display, the standard monitor features Bluetooth connectivity and supports functionality for rearview camera feed, creep, job clock, maintenance

reminders and 32 languages.

The advanced touchscreen monitor provides a higher level of control over standard monitor functionality, delivers advanced radio control, and supports the multicamera 270˚ option and 32 language choices. The new

advanced joysticks provide integrated control of the advanced touchscreen monitor so all machine function control and adjustments can be made without the operator removing their hands from the controls.

Featuring a low entry point, entering and exiting the 255 and 265 loaders is much easier. The redesign allows the operator to open the cab door without the lift arms being fully lowered to the frame stops. A simplified two-

step door removal process allows operators to quickly remove it without tools.

Visibility is improved via the lower engine mounting, a 59 per cent larger rear window and bigger top window that provides a 15 per cent increase in viewable area.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES

These new compact track loaders deliver the next level of integrating machines with technology. Both the standard and advanced monitors offer the ability to run Cat Smart Attachments, such as the dozer and grader blades and backhoe. These attachments are tied into the joysticks, and the machine automatically recognizes the type of attachment and the required joystick pattern for controlling it.

The available Cat Product Link Elite system tracks machine hours, location, asset utilization, provides fault code details and delivers advanced monitoring and machine health, that is remotely accessible via VisionLink®. In addition, Product Link Elite provides remote flash and troubleshooting capabilities and quickly enables the remote activation of the SEA High Flow feature.

A chat with Boilermaker Cheynae Steel

Cheynae Bramich is a boilermaker at Jayben Group in Tasmania. A boilermaker by trade, Cheynae recently gained her International Welding Inspector - Basic (IWI-B) qualification and has started training for AS 2214 Structural Steel Supervisor. Cheynae answered some questions about her career in welding.

Q: CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR JOB?

A : I am a boilermaker welder at Jayben Group on the north west coast of Tasmania. I have been here for just over 12 months and during that time my responsibilities have been in the manufacturing sector. My role revolves around the production of civil and mining products, catering to a diverse range of industries.

One of the significant aspects of my job entails capitalising on defence fabrication opportunities, where precision and durability are paramount. Working with a wide range of materials mainly carbon steel and aluminium, I am tasked with fabricating structures that adhere to stringent quality standards. Considering the

demanding requirements inherent in defence projects, Jayben has invested in my professional development, enabling me to complete certifications such as the IWI-B (International Welding Inspector - Basic) and commence training for AS 2214 (Structural Steel Supervisor). These certifications not only enhance my ability but also complement our commitment to delivering excellency in defence fabrication projects.

Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CHOOSE A CAREER IN WELDING?

A: Going through school, not really knowing what I wanted to do as a career I studied childcare as many of my friends and fellow students chose to, courses were readily available

and the need for child carers in industry was high. I enjoyed my studies however I found working with children challenging. So I began looking for new opportunities and signed up to a local job agency. One day, I received a phone call and was asked if I’d be interested in a short course in welding. I was available, so I agreed to try something new. I arrived at a very small, local workshop eager to learn all about welding. I thoroughly enjoyed my short course in welding and I was pulled aside by the gentleman running it to say that I should pursue a career in welding!

The industry was booming on the north west coast of Tasmania and in a matter of weeks I scored a trial in a boiler making/heavy metal

fabrication workshop in Somerset. I applied for the first apprenticeship I saw advertised. I was called for an interview and once that process was completed, I was offered an apprenticeship! One could say it was a snowball effect that led me to my apprenticeship in heavy metal fabrication. And one that I was not expecting. The process of being able to join two pieces of metal together has always intrigued me as I remember Dad when I was a child welding in the shed at home. Also my older brother successfully pursued a career in welding and the metal fabrication industry as soon as he left high school, and I thought to myself, “If he can do it, so can I!”

Q: WHY DO YOU THINK WOMEN SHOULD CONSIDER A CAREER IN

WELDING?

A: I think women should consider a career in welding for a few different reasons. Firstly boilermakers are in high demand across

Being a female boilermaker in a male dominated workforce has presented challenges for Cheynae, but she’s risen to the challenge

different industries such as construction, manufacturing and automotive.

Welding offers a wide range of career paths including fabrication, inspection, supervision and management roles, engineering and so much more!

Welding and fabricating are hands on jobs, yes. But it enables you to problem solve and allows you to develop valuable technical skills and contribute to projects that require precision and creativity. And lastly, women should consider a career in welding because, by entering a typically male dominated workforce, we are challenging stereotypes. We are able to inspire others to pursue careers based on our interests and abilities rather than social expectations.

exact science

Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR WOMEN CONSIDERING A CAREER IN WELDING?

A: Seriously, wear your PPE and follow safety protocols. They are in place for a reason and everyone wants to get home to their family safely at the end of each shift. Build self confidence, believe in yourself and your abilities, and don’t let stereotypes and gender biases deter you from your work.

Be strong, and resilient and persevere through any setbacks or difficulties you may encounter along the way. Seek mentorship and network with a range of people in the welding industry. By building these connections it opens you up to more opportunities for career advancement and support. And lastly, don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself, speak up if you encounter any discrimination because of your gender. Remember you deserve to be treated with respect and fairness in your workplace.

Q: HAVE YOU FOUND WORKING IN A TRADITIONALLY MALE DOMINATED INDUSTRY DIFFICULT? IF SO, HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME ANY CHALLENGES?

A: Yes, I’m not going to lie here. Working in a male dominated industry was tough for me during my apprenticeship.

It was in my second year that I fell pregnant with my son. During that time I was subjected to a lot of harsh judgement about what I should and shouldn’t be doing regarding my personal health and safety. I was shunned by many men in the workplace, and I was subjected to workplace harassment and bullying behaviours to some degree.

But despite the negativity that I was receiving, I remained strong in my own beliefs

that what I was doing (by continuing my work and my apprenticeship) was the best thing for me and my baby. When times got tough, I reached out to family and friends for guidance and support. Over the next decade, I learnt that overcoming these challenges and many like them require a combination of personal strength, resilience, and determination to succeed professionally.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING PROJECT YOU’VE WORKED ON? WHY?

A: Among all the projects I’ve undertaken, none

captures my fascination quite like our defence project. Its attraction lies not only in its significance but also in the intricacies it presents.

One of the most captivating aspects is the challenge of weld procedure qualifications, particularly when it comes to PWHT of aluminium—a material known for its sensitivity to temperature variations. Navigating aluminium welding while adhering to stringent standards demands attention to detail and precision.

Furthermore, being entrusted with the role of a welding inspector adds another layer of complexity, as I must ensure compliance with relevant standards while maintaining the integrity and quality of our work.

The dynamic nature of this project, coupled with the technical challenges it presents, makes it an endlessly intriguing opportunity that pushes the boundaries of my expertise and fuels my passion for excellence in fabrication.

TRADIE PROFILE

Q: WHO HAS INSPIRED YOU PROFESSIONALLY AND WHY?

A: I’d like to make mention of my brother, who successfully completed his apprenticeship as a boilermaker welder and has continued to work in the industry ever since. Without him I would never have pictured myself following this amazing career path. Or known that this trade was even a possibility for me. His ability to fabricate and weld heavy machinery

to the level in which he does, has given me insights into what it means to be a skilled tradesman. Initially, it was his passion for welding that inspired me to give it a go in the first instance and I am grateful that I did.

Not to mention the countless kind men (and women) who taught and supported me throughout my career. Without encouragement and guidance from fellow work mates, TAFE teachers and people within industry, I would not be achieving what I am today. It’s the passion and potential that I see in other people which continues to inspire me to do what I enjoy.

WHEN CORALIE’S primary school decided to build a peace garden, she was front and centre, shovel in hand.

The starry-eyed sixth grader had finished her schoolwork six weeks before the term had ended, so she decided to help design a proper blueprint for the project.

“It got built and it’s still there today,” she said.

“I ended up duxxing my primary school because of that. Technically, I had my first landscaping project done when I was 12.”

Coralie’s passion for creating things only grew from there, spending much of her high school years getting to grips with landscaping. However, when graduation came around, she was given some questionable career advice.

“I ended up going to uni and studying a double degree in marketing and communication design because my careers lady said there was ‘no money

carry on

From designed a grade 6 peace garden to today, Coralie has relished being on a messy worksite

in landscaping’,” she said.

“I then eventually left uni after realising trades might have been a really good option all along.”

TO THE BAY

“I started landscape construction and horticulture, then moved to Byron Bay because there’s a huge development boom up there and more extreme weather conditions,”

Coralie added.

“When installing projects, you’ve really got to stick to the guidelines because come wet season, it’s really got to hold up.

“You won’t see the consequences of choices in trees or doing a

Out on her own terms at Byron; Coralie developed a portfolio of landscaping projects, clients and staff in the hinterland.

Coralie’s tradie adventures

With class

You’d be hard pressed to find someone who embodies the tradie spirit quite like Coralie Stuart. She shared her story with The Tradie as she evolves from landscaping to building

But eventually, Coralie found that ‘mo projects = mo problems’.

“I hit a ceiling where I was building bigger and bigger projects, and I started getting projects what really tested my

capacity,” she said.

“Things that involved more in-depth structural work like pools, cabanas, tiling and all the regulations around them.

“At that point I had to tap out because I wanted to

produce quality and come from a space of integrity.”

So Coralie went somewhere that had a bigger creative building scene – Melbourne.

BEST LAID PLANS

Back and close to family in Melbourne, Coralie decided it was time to dig further into the building aspect of the trades.

She joined on with Melbourne-based building company SMD Projects, applying what she already knew while learning more on the job as well as getting to grips with getting her builder’s license.

“I feel like I’ve aged 10 years in the last month learning how to quote building plans,” she joked.

“It’s been really useful being a landscaper coming into the building space.

In the Landscaping

course, we are taught the basics of most trades as individual subjects.

I feel like it’s given me the foundational skills to communicate well to a variety of the trades on-site compared to the carpentry course being mostly timber focussed.”

Having previously served as a member on the Australian Institute of Horticultures National Council, Coralie has become increasingly involved with tradiebased organisations.

This includes Carpentry Australia and Empowered Women in Trades (EWIT).

“Being involved in those three spaces really helped me with figuring out which TAFE I should be involved in, what course I should look for and what kind of job is appropriate to do on the

side that will help with learning for the course,” she said.

“It’s such a different world to nine years ago, I

was fumbling in the dark quite a lot because I didn’t know what resources were available, if there even were resources.”

Starting life as a landscaper; Coralie has been heavily involved in the Aussie horticulture scene

LEADING (HELPING) HAND

Part of Coralie’s passion for trades was the capacity it gave her to give back to the wider community in a more meaningful way.

It started in Byron where Coralie used her tradie following to sponsor her women’s footy team to stay afloat during COVID. Then, in 2022, she co-ordinated with her tradie mates to use her following to raise money and help the floodaffected community in Lismore. Coralie continued to volunteer locally with

the Byron Mobile Wild Life Hospital and the Byron Rangers.

Eventually, Coralie linked up with Habitat with Humanity to build a demountable home and memorial garden for a woman who lost her husband and home in the 2020 Blue Mountains bushfires.

This evolved into Coralie being asked to be a Habitat for Humanity ambassador to lead 16 other tradies to Cambodia to build a home for a family who didn’t have one, protecting them from the elements.

The project raised $28,500, with the tradie volunteers using locally sourced materials and

building methods that made it easy for the local community to replicate the methods and build homes for themselves.

“It’s been a wild ride … it was something that was very special,” Coralie said.

“It was so heartwarming to see how much support came from the trades industry.”

More recently, Coralie helped Carpentry Australia during one of its Helping Hands renovations. The project involved volunteer tradies renovating the property of Noreen Elliot - a volunteer herself who’s dedicated her life to helping others.

Coralie helped tackle the garden with the

sponsorship of her horticultural following.

“We created a native based plant out to soften up the state around the deck we installed,” Coralie added.

“It’s great to see how much we can achieve when different trades

collaborate well together.”

Coralie is set on furthering her life as a tradie to have the skills to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living.

You can learn more about Coralie’s work @s.coralie. create.s on Instagram.

With a solid understanding of the tradie landscape, Coralie’s next adventure will be attaining her builder’s license

Bosch’s Expert SDS Clean Plus-8X

Tradies on demo jobs can forget their dustpan and broom thanks to Bosch’s Expert SDS Clean Plus-8X. These attachments not only leave the site clean, but also the airways of its users

GETTING MESSY ON-SITE might make a tradie feel cool and gritty at the beginning. But – much like your bedroom as a kid – whatever mess you make has to be cleaned up.

Bosch has made drilling jobs cleaner and safer with its SDS Clean Plus range.

For this Tough Test, we visited tradie Toby Spicer from Pillar Construction at a site in Beaumaris located in Melbourne’s South-East for the test.

TEST #1: ON THE AIRWAVES

Toby tested the hammer drill on some concrete for starter bars and anchor bolts.

Both the hammer drill attachments are 25 times better at reducing dust production on a job compared to regular SDS bits*.

“The dust reduction was unreal,” Toby said.

“Anyone using a hammer drill knows after 30-40 holes, you’ve got tonnes of dust spitting around, going into your face and what not – it’s not fun.

“Having this on-site was super helpful in continuously sucking that dust up as we went along.”

Bosch Particle Control technology means a reduction of dust 25 times better than without the adapter

52 THE TRADIE BRAND:
Moving around and using the SDS Clean Plus equipment was extremely simple

The hammer drill’s design uses the best of Bosch’s welding technology. This includes a quality steel pipe which can be easily cleaned if jammed and a four-cutter full carbide head for better drilling through reinforced concrete and reduced jamming.

TEST #2: BREATHE EASY

In teams of ease of use, Toby was able to get the best out of these SDS Clean attachments. They’re super quick to install, and their compact design make them easy to store.

“These performed great as expected,” Toby said. As well as being super easy to attach, the SDS Clean bits fit most dust extractors.

The trades industry is always finding ways to make the site safer from air contaminants.

A major drawcard for SDS Clean attachments is the more dust and particles they suck up, the less is wafting around for tradies to inhale.

“Over last 5-10 years, Australia’s really started to crack down on dust safety,” Toby said.

“It’s required on pretty much every site to have a dust extractor if you’re producing a lot of dust.”

PUNCH IT IN

Bosch are the pioneers for SDS Clean technology, and it shows in the latest Expert SDS Clean range.

Using the hammer drill attachments - Toby loved the attach-and-go simplicity, as well as their ability to cut dust production to a minimum.

“The bits and vacuum were easy to setup and use,” he said.

“I spend hours using a hammer drill every day, and everything helps when it comes to dust reduction both for my health and a clean end product.”

Paslode’s Straight TrimMaster

Paslode continue to demonstrate why they’re ahead of the curve when it comes to nailing innovation. Its latest iteration of the Straight TrimMaster doesn’t just take its cladding to another level, but adds in new flavour for steel fix outs too

AUSSIE TRADIES are well-versed with Paslode products. Its Angled TrimMaster – which got a refresh in 2022 - is a common sight among carpenters needing a reliable bradder. It’s the new-look Straight TrimMaster’s turn, however, and this beauty takes Paslode’s innovation to a whole new level.

It’s the first nailer that can shoot 14ga, 16ga and 15ga brads – something our chippy mate Angus ‘Gus’ Redfearn loved trying out.

Because of its broad applications across a build, Gus took us to two different sites in Melbourne to test out the Straight TrimMaster’s many applications.

TEST #1: THREE-HEADED BEAST

Gus was amazed by the amount of nailing applications he could use the Straight TrimMaster on.

He started on the exterior of site one, shooting 14ga brads into fibre cement cladding.

The Straight TrimMaster handled the cladding like a pro, thanks to its optimised firing pin which helps punch through James Hardy and Weathertex materials with ease.

54 THE TRADIE
BRAND:
Gus used Paslode’s Steel Frame Brads for working with the steel frame fix outs with timber panelling Paslode tightened up the tolerances with the Straight TrimMaster to ensure consistent accuracy across thousands of shots

“The power really is something … you notice how well it handles in driving these nails into a variety of materials, but especially those harder materials,” Gus said.

Next up, Gus used some of Paslode’s newest 15ga Steel Frame Brads through some steel framing with timber moulds on the exterior of another residential build.

The Steel Frame Brads save even more time when added with the Straight TrimMaster, removing the need to pre-mark, pre-drill or use glue.

Last, but certainly not least, Gus put the nailer to use on a carpenter’s bread and butter – 16ga brads into timber skirting boards.

You’d think after all we’d put the Straight TrimMaster through, the many changes in applications would compromise shooting consistency.

However, it shot just as true on the last nail as the first he shot for the cladding.

Considering he’d been shooting with the nailer throughout a week using all three brads, that’s pretty darn impressive.

“Any kind of tool a tradie’s using, you can expect jamming,” Gus said.

“But with this nailer, the only time it jammed was when I forgot to swap the nose tip between 14ga and 16ga.

“Otherwise, there wasn’t any misfiring or jamming and each shot was a perfect as the last.”

TEST #2: NEED FOR SPEED

To add even more time saved for its owner, the Straight TrimMaster’s has grease rather than oil applied at the factory. Paslode has used this with its other trim tools, as greasing minimises dust ‘glugging’ up the nailer.

A quick clean of the filter and degrease of the spark will have the nailer shooting in no time. Tens of thousands of shots later, and tradies can take the nailer to their nearest Paslode servicer for a grease replacement.

As if the Straight TrimMaster wasn’t dedicated enough to saving tradies time, swapping the nose tips was a breeze.

“The quick-release nose makes swapping out the heads drama free,” Gus said.

“You just swap out the brads and bang – you’re good to go.”

POWER TRIO

This latest bradder from Paslode really sets the tone for innovation in the nailing space.

It combines all the latest features in terms of firing accuracy and minimal maintenance into a tool that shoots across three different gauges for both cladding and fix outs.

“When you’re working on your own, you don’t want to keep having to swap between nailers for different jobs or materials,” Gus said.

“Paslode has realised a lot of tradies don’t want to buy a second bradder – they’ve engineered all the major needs into one single unit.”

STANLEY® FATMAX® TradeLift™

We know tradies can be a tad shy when asking for help for lifting heavy objects. STANLEY® has come to the rescue of many a bruised ego with its FATMAX® TradeLift™

WE ENLISTED CARPENTER Noah Whitford from Pillar Construction for this Tough Test. He was working on a new build in Melbourne’s east, and was keen to try out a tool that could carry its fair share. Enter the TradeLift. This small, but mighty tool is designed to lift heavy objects – pure and simple. While its purpose might be straightforward, tradies needing an extra (and strong) hand when working on sites will absolutely love this tool, as you’ll find out.

TEST #1: HELPING HAND

Let’s answer the obvious question you’re asking: “how much does it lift bro?”.

The TradeLift has a hefty lifting capacity of 150kgs. That makes it perfect for a handful of tradie tasks, from positioning flooring to lifting large cabinets. For our test, Noah needed to adjust some window frames.

BRAND:

“It was really great to not have to worry about needing to get someone else or risk damaging anything,” he said.

As well as being very strong, the TradeLift is precise as well with a fine 2.5mm per toggle. This allowed Noah to set the TradeLift to the exact space it needed it to create.

56 THE TRADIE
Noah used the TradeLifts to hold window fixtures in place The simple trigger grip design of the TradeLift makes it easy to set up to the desired level and get on with the job

tough approved! TEST

“That’s really important for our work –sometimes you need to move things by just a couple of millimetres.

“That’s really hard to do by hand, so having the TradeLift as an extra set of hands is really helpful.”

TEST #2: SIMPLE BUT STRONG

Making those millimetre changes is all the more easy thanks to the simplicity of the TradeLift.

The ergonomic handle of the tool made it easy for Noah to grip and lift to his hearts content.

So you don’t lose any digits, Stanley has implemented a recessed full release button, which makes it very difficult to accidentally release the TradeLift.

“I was really impressed by how easy it was to use,” Noah said.

“To move anything forward, back, up or down –the triggers are really easy to use.”

Being such a heavy lifter, the TradeLift is built for hard work.

Its enclosed metal housing prevents dust from building up around the tool, meaning it’s always performing at peak.

MAXIMUM EFFORT

Noah was stoked by the amount of time (and effort) he saved with the TradeLift.

It provided him with peace of mind in shifting heavy objects, and made his life so much easier when working by himself.

“They were easy to use, not too heavy and I was really impressed by how much they could lift,” Noah said.

The FATMAX TradeLift comes in a one-pack or you can purchase a pack of two.

Cement Australia’s PROStrength Rapid Set Concrete solid DO ME A tough TRADIE TESTS

In days past, tradies have had to choose between speed and strength for projects such as fencing, gates and retaining walls. Thanks to Cement Australia, you don’t have to choose one over the other.

AS THE NAME suggests, Cement Australia’s PROStrength Rapid Set Concrete combines the best of the brand’s Rapid Set and PROStrength products.

It’s perfect for tradies working on projects that can be done quicker with fast-setting cement, but also require a strong concrete for supporting load-bearing structures.

Carpenter Toby Spicer from Pillar Construction needed just that for his job in Melbourne’s South-East, where he was putting up 40m of fencing with retaining wall as part of an overall outdoor reno.

TEST #1: NO WAIT TIMES

With PROStrength Rapid Set, you can pour the cement into the hole and mix it there.

Speaking of saving time, Toby was blown away by how quickly the PROStrength Rapid Set hardened.

Toby’s pours hardened within 30 minutes, allowing him and his team to get on with other jobs on-site.

With a strength of 40MPa, the PROStrength Rapid Set Concrete has double the holding power of regular Rapid Set Concrete

a lot

BRAND:

“Other quick-setting cements harden in about 15 minutes, which can be good but also doesn’t give you much wriggle room to work with,” Toby said.

“For my work, 30 minutes is the perfect amount of time to be able to properly pour, mix and pad out evenly.”

TEST #2: HARD TO STAY

Hard in 30 minutes, and load bearing after 24

58 THE TRADIE
With of work to get done, Toby and his team benefitted from the 30-minute setting time of the cement

hours; Toby was super happy with the strength of the PROStrength Rapid Set.

“It was unreal, the concrete has really held up,” he said.

“We’re using 115x115 Cyprus (wood) posts at about 3.6m deep, so we needed something that was gonna hold up.

“Needless to say, it did the job and we were thoroughly impressed with the final product.”

PROStrength Rapid Set Concrete delivers with a strength of 40MPa which is twice as strong as Cement Australia’s standard Rapid Set Concrete.

This makes it suitable for not just fencing, but gates, commercial signs, sporting equipment installations and retaining walls among other general building and home project applications.

For those working on road furniture, PROStrength Rapid Set is also TMR MRTS14 approved.

“We checked it a day or so later on the site and it was holding up fantastically,” Toby said.

“It’d be great addition for all our fencing jobs going forward.”

SETTING IN

Cement Australia continues to set the bar when it comes to concrete innovation. With PROStrength Rapid Set Concrete, Toby was stoked to have a product that could harden in a reasonably short time, but also be loadbearing making it ideal for many regular tradie jobs.

“We strive to use the best products at our company, and this cement is definitely up there,” Toby said.

Bosch’s GLL 3-80 CG Professional Line Laser

While using lasers on a site can feel cool and technical, tradies don’t usually want that to come at the cost of simplicity. Thankfully, Bosch has come through with the compact, simple and comprehensive GLL 3-80 CG Professional Line Laser

TRADIES NEEDING a line laser that gets accurate information they need asap need look no further than the GLL 3-80 CG.

The tool is big on simplicity and accuracy for a modern tradie who likes to have all the site metrics available in the palm of their hand.

This includes subby Ferdinand Joseph, who helped us put the GLL 3-80 CG through its paces at a site in Melbourne’s east.

He was installing new down-lights for a customer, so he needed the laser to accurately measure the layout for precise placement of the fixtures.

TEST #1: GREEN MACHINE

The ease of use of the GLL 3-80 CG cannot be understated. All Ferdinand had to do was place the laser on its tripod, turn it on, an away it went.

“The ease of use with this is phenomenal,” he said. Where this user friendly interface really shines is in Bosch’s unique Bluetooth controlling capabilities.

With this feature, Ferdinand was able to get readings and control the laser from his phone, allowing him to check-in and change settings without going back to it.

60 THE TRADIE BRAND:
For precise jobs like installing down-light fixtures, the GLL 3-80 CG is as accurate as they come The line laser has three bright green laser diodes; one horizontal and two vertical lines

tough approved! TEST

“The ease-of-use I had with the Bluetooth function was a game-changer,” he said.

“If I’m up on a ladder drilling holes, I can whip out my phone to check the laser and change settings when I need to.

“If I need to swap between the vertical or horizontal lines, you don’t have to get down and tinker around – you can do it from the comfort of the ladder.”

The optional RM 3 base allows the GLL 3-80 CG to do line adjustments on its own.

TEST #2: GREEN WITH ENVY

As far as accuracy goes, the GLL 3-80 CG has a precise range of +/- 0.2mm/m.

It also uses cone mirror technology which gives the line laser a clear look a its surrounds.

“For my work as an electrician working on these downlights, I want everything to look absolutely perfect,” Ferdinand said.

Like other Bosch lasers, the GLL 3-80 CG uses bright green beams to ensure everything is clear as possible.

“In my opinion, the green lights were perfect for me both working inside and outside,” Ferdinand said.

“I could see both the horizontal and vertical lines clearly with no issues whatsoever with daylight.”

LEAN AND GREEN

Having the ability to control the GLL 3-80 CG remotely via smartphone made Ferdinand’s job much less tedious.

It’s but the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how this line laser makes the job much easier than ever before.

Bosch has installed the essentials in this compact, yet elite package that leaves tradies confident rather than confused and overwhelmed by technical jargon.

“This can be used on variety of things – for me as an electrician there’s tonnes of applications I’d use it for,” Ferdinand said.

“I’ll definitely be using it almost daily – it’s a game changer.”

Brad “bloody” loves his painting

You’d think after 19 years of painting, Brad White would be sick of it. As we find out, that couldn’t be farther from the truth

BRAD DIDN’T initially want to be a painter when he was young. He didn’t really enjoy high school, so he decided he’d do an apprenticeship.

“I didn’t really enjoy school, so my mum made me go out and find a job,” he said.

“I wanted to be a chippy … there was a painting apprenticeship that popped up, so I did that and the rest is history.”

A BIT ON

After his apprenticeship, Brad continued to work with his boss for another 7ish years.

But there came a time where Brad’s workload – paired with a few

momentous occasions – that required him to reevaluate where he was at in his career.

“I got married and built our first home, then had a baby on the way. It all started going to my head –I was working seven days a week,” he said.

“I felt like I was already doing a lot of the work fairly well on my own

“Not being able to spend weekends with my baby – I decided I’d be better going out on my own, so I gave it a crack.

“If it fell through, I knew I could go back to my old boss – he was great and would welcome me back with open arms.”

All this was during

62 THE TRADIE
Brad’s team are kitted out and ready to roll across Geelong, Bellerine and the Surf Coast

2020 – the peak of COVID. Sufficed to say, Brad was a little stressed by everything that was going on.

“Everything happened during COVID between building the home, the baby and starting the business – it was pretty stressful,” he said.

“It was a decent risk, but I haven’t really looked back. You never know unless you have a crack.

“I’ve established a good clientele, and have a handful of builders I’ve developed a good relationship with.

“I can’t complain – it has its ups and downs, but that’s life.”

Working around coastal communities allows Prime White Painting to work on some great (and massive) regional properties

GREAT WHITE

Having the last name White made picking a name for Brad’s business a piece of cake.

“My last name’s White so I felt like I had to come up with a catchy name – so we went with Prime White Painting,” he said.

Prime White Painting operates in Geelong, around the Bellerine Peninsula and Surf Coast areas offering internal painting, external painting, wallpapering, feature walls … you name it.

“We do a lot of custom and new homes,” Brad added.

“We’ve got a good system all-round, we don’t really do too much commercial stuff.”

One thing Brad’s always looking to do is develop his craft, and is always looking to new and innovative fields he can paint in.

“Once you start, you can’t bloody stop. It’s all I’ve known – going from high school to painting,” he said.

“I really do enjoy my job – I love painting. Seeing a project from the start to after you’ve worked on it … it’s awesome.

“Anyone can pick up a bucket, roller and a brush and do a wall, but learning about using different products on different surfaces, learning about wallpapering and artisanal concrete finishes and even plastering – you learn about all these avenues so

you’re constantly adding more strings to your bow.”

AN EXTRA COAT

Brad is only a relatively new member of the Master Painters Association of Victoria/Tasmania (MPAV/TAS).

While Prime White Painting is a newer member, Brad said his business has benefitted tremendously from joining the association.

“They’re very responsive and explain a lot … you can tell Master Painters is on your side,” he said.

While Brad’s work has involved a lot of newer builds, Prime White Painting does plenty of older home refreshes too white out!

“The kinds of services and deals they offer … if you’re ever stuck with something, it’s good to have a group that’s there for painters.”

Brendan shares why his go-to is Cement Australia

BRENDAN ROBERTS has been in the cementing biz for nearly 20 years.

Based in Manly Vale, Sydney – he owns Render Lines – a cement

and acrylic rendering business.

“We do a bit of everything, but mainly we’re working on residential,” Brendan said.

“I’ve done plenty of highend homes, mansions, big jobs, small jobs –everything really.”

One thing that separates Brendan and his business

work sees him using render in very contemporary ways

The smooth and creamy texture Brendan is able to make from Cement Australia mixtures is a primary reason he chooses it for his traditional rendering methods

from the competition is that he uses traditional rendering methods using sand and cement.

“Basically we use sand and cement to make clay and we use some additives in the rendering to strengthen the mud (render),” he said.

“It’s the best method for strengthening the mud.”

STILL RENDERING

From sand/cement, acrylic and colour textured renders, Brendan’s go-to is Cement Australia.

Brendan trusts the quality of products produced by Cement Australia - an Australian-

based company that’s manufactured on Aussie soil since 1890.

For his work, Brendan mainly uses Cement Australia’s General Purpose Cement, Rapid Set Concrete, Off-White Cement and Clay.

“I’ve been using Cement Australia products for a while,” Brendan said.

“The premium texture of Cement Australia’s products and the ease-ofuse are really great.

“If you want to pour something through glass for example, you’re gonna need something that’s smooth and creamy that won’t crack it.”

spaces such as long pipes or wall cavities, tradies frequently struggle with maintaining orientation while manoeuvring the camera cable. AutoUp proves invaluable, offering users the confidence they need and aiding in accurate image analysis. However, in situations where users have a clear understanding of the camera’s position, such as a car mechanic inserting the cable to a specific depth of around 10 cm, disabling AutoUp may be preferable to view the full-screen image instead. Built tough to withstand rugged job sites, the 5-27 C flaunts an IP67 rating for the camera head, shielding

it from dust and brief water immersion , while the tool itself boasts IP54 dust and splash water protection.

SEE AND BELIEVE

Meanwhile, the GIC 4-23 C features a generous 4.3” monitor with clear, high-definition imagery at 800x480 pixels, it facilitates swift and intuitive analysis of pipes, ducts, and confined areas. With the Up Indication feature, determining image orientation is a breeze with an arrow showing which way is up. Like its sibling, this ergonomic tool is engineered to tackle demanding job sites

and inaccessible spots, boasting an IP67 rating for the camera head and IP54 protection against dust and splashes for the tool itself.

Both the 5-27 C and 4-23 C can save up to 30 images on their internal memory.

The 5-27 C can also store videos via a micro SD card. No matter which camera

The Hot Devil Brazing Torch Kit (HDBTK) has just landed, and is supplied with a new larger 950ml Oxygen Cylinder (HDOC) and, of course, the tried and tested 400gm Trade Map Gas Cylinder (HDTRD).

The new Hot Devil Oxygen Cylinder 950ml (HDOC) which feeds this powerful new brazing torch will keep you burning for well over 45 minutes, whilst being compact enough for even those ‘hard to reach’ places, making this great blow torch a ‘must have’ tool for any workshop, toolbox or ute.

FEEL THE HEAT

With gas and oxygen flow control valves built into the lance, the Hot Devil Brazing Torch Kit couldn’t be easier to use (and igniting it is breeze).

Powered by a mix of Trade Map Gas and Compressed Oxygen, the Brazing Torch Kit by Hot Devil provides a burn temperature of almost 3000°C (2926°C to be exact), making it ideal for a multitude of jobs, whether in the workshop, or out on site. With the ability to weld and braze various metals, loosen off that stubborn rusted bolt or nut, or even get through up to 3mm mild steel plates, the Hot Devil Brazing Torch Kit does it all with ease.

The kit includes a lightweight metal cylinder stand, a 1.7m long hose kit

complete with solid brass valve fittings and a 1mm pin-point burner tip. Also included are an Oxygen cylinder 950ml and a Trade Map gas cylinder, as well as a hand sparker with spare flint and tinted safety glasses.

Expensive bottle rentals can be a drain on your business, especially if you

only use them occasionally, not to mention the time lost moving them around site, up ladders, under

houses, etc! With the lightweight and portability of the Hot Devil Brazing Torch Kit, this problem is solved.

Checking up

Why and when you should check your insurance coverage

MAINTENANCE is something a tradie knows is invaluable. A good tradie would never ignore a leak, exposed wire or rotting wood, so why would your boots hit the soil after neglecting your business insurance?

Things change over time, and those pristine pipes you installed a while back might spring a leak down the line. But before that drip turns into a deluge, it’s wise to do some upkeep. Guess what? Your business insurance needs a bit of TLC, too. Odds

are, your work situation has evolved since you first got covered. But with everything else on your plate, it’s easy for insurance to slip your mind.

IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

So when should you check in on what type(s) of insurance you may need?

Here are three times to consider giving your policies a check-up:

1. When your situation shifts: Whether it’s adapting new

tech, following fresh regulations, or offering new services, shifts in your business environment could mean your current coverage isn’t cutting it anymore.

2. When you upgrade your gear: Your tools and equipment are the backbone of your trade. And as your business expands, you’ll likely invest in more gear. It may be smart to update your cover to ensure your tools of the trade are protected against mishaps.

3. When your business grows: More revenue, more team members – as your business scales up, so might your risks. Make sure your insurance grows along with your business to steer clear of unwelcome surprises.

The bottom line? While you don’t need to sweat over your insurance every single day, it’s not a ‘set and forget’ deal either. If your

New scholarships for women to build careers in construction

THE INSTITUTE of Applied Technology – Construction (IATC) has announced three microskills to its suite of courses as well as fee-free training places for women.

The Institute is a partnership between TAFE NSW, leading construction company CPB Contractors, and Western Sydney University.

Co-designed with industry experts, microskills are online, bite-sized, self-directed courses. These three new microskills focus on topics critical for building capability in the construction sector now and into the future and include: Introduction to Women in Construction, Introduction to Sustainability in Construction, and The Role

of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Construction.

SKILL UP

The IATC is also furthering its commitment to encourage more women to kickstart a career in construction or upskill in their current role with the availability of 60 fee-free training places in its microcredential courses. The scholarships come at a time when the construction industry in Australia is facing a shortage of over 100,000 workers. Applications are now open for the Women in Construction Scholarships, delivered by the Institute of Applied Technology Construction. CPB Contractors General Manager

Infrastructure NSW and ACT, Rob Monaci said “as the pipeline of infrastructure continues to grow, particularly with the focus on housing and new energy, the need for more skilled workers is an industry-wide issue. We need to be doing more to attract people at all stages of their careers to transition into fulfilling careers in construction, particularly women.”

The microcredentials take eight weeks to complete and provide industry-specific skills recognised as evidence of competence. The microcredentials can be completed online or faceto-face.

Microskill courses allow trainees to take a bitesized and self-directed approach to learning

Technology Helen Fremlin encouraged women interested in a career in construction to take advantage of the free microcredentials and said they promote a practical learning journey.

“Whether you choose online or face-to-face, these microcredentials include regular educatorled sessions,” she said.

“These draw on industry specific examples, tasks, and case studies to give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills directly with the support of educators.

“Part of the eligibility process requires women to complete two microskill courses. Microskills are free, two-hour, self-directed sessions, a great way to help get you started.”

Women in Construction Scholarship courses are aimed at high-growth areas and include:

• Project Management Foundations in Construction

• Introduction to Project Scope Management in Construction

• Project Risk Management in Construction

• Stakeholder Engagement and Management in Construction

Getting the green

How Fergus helps tradies flex their business muscles

LIKE ANYTHING

, modernising and streamlining a business is easier said than done.

When tradies look to software to upgrade their operations, the last thing they need is to be thrown in the deep end with no help.

It’d be like upgrading to a new tool only to find it’s more complex and confusing than old faithful.

The team at Fergus know how irritating it can be for tradies to implement new business software, so they’ve made it simple.

THE INS AND OUTS

Fergus not only simplifies payments but also streamlines invoicing and quoting processes, reducing paperwork burdens. It facilitates quick invoice generation and delivery, eliminating the

need to navigate through multiple platforms.

Navigating through Fergus is effortless, thanks to its user-friendly dashboard, ensuring easy tracking of jobs and payments.

All of this is at tradies’ fingertips thanks to the Fergus App – the modern way to do business.

“Before we were using Fergus, we were doing things manually, which was quite hard,” according to Baltic Electric.

“We’re a small business, so it just makes life a lot easier using software because we can delegate roles, give jobs out, and communicate with our customers.”

The app sports some of the following features, all aimed at working for tradies rather than against them:

• Simple syncing: Data seamlessly transfers between Fergus and Xero, eliminating redundant tasks and offering a comprehensive view of the business’s financial status.

• Comprehensive job management: Tradies can oversee all aspects of a job, from initial quoting to scheduling, invoicing, and reporting, streamlining processes and saving time on administrative tasks.

• S wift reconciliations: Users can monitor job progress and payment status with supplier invoices sent directly from Fergus to Xero, simplifying and accelerating the reconciliation process.

• Efficient end-of-year reporting: Information

flows instantly from Fergus to Xero, providing real-time data for speedy end-of-year reporting.

“In general, it’s the time Fergus saves to do things,” said Cosy Homes Services. “It does things in a lot quicker way than I would normally, so the value is the fact that I’m not losing time like before.”

CLASS IN SESSION

But the support doesn’t stop there. Fergus has your back with free lifetime training and support modules aimed at making you a business pro on and off the tools.

No matter your trade, be it plumbing, carpentry, electrical – Fergus has the simple and accessible modules to help your business.

Why

Fergus aims to put the power of running your business into the palm of your hand

From pivoting your operation to open new revenue streams, simple marketing tips all the way to predicting your future cashflow and recessionproofing your business – Fergus’ Tradehub has you sorted.

If you have a bit more time up your sleeve, Fergus also has regular webinars hosted by fellow Aussie tradies who share how they took their business to another level.

A new financial year gives tradies a chance to revaluate their business and finances, so why not make both simple and beneficial? Visit fergus.com to learn more or sign up for a free 14-day trial.

TRADIE PROFILE

tradie super

From formwork to supervising,

Zoe’s rising up

Zoe Luby tells us why she doesn’t mind the dirty work, and her towering aspirations

LIKE MANY 20 something

Aussies, Zoe took a while to figure out what she wanted to do for a career long-term.

The now-28-year-old fourth year apprentice said she was influenced by her builder brother –NAME to eventually take up the tools.

“It wasn’t until my mid 20s when I realised I really should find a salary-based job,” Zoe said.

Having gone to an all-girls school, Zoe said there were no options for classes that involved hands on trade experience like tech or woodworking.

“If that was an elective in school, I would’ve done it –

Zoe’s work with major construction companies has had her working on a tonne of cool projects, including the Melbourne Quarter Tower

100 per cent,” she said.

“If you can’t see it, you probably won’t take an interest in it … we didn’t get that hands on experience.

“I would’ve loved it when I was a teenager.”

Zoe’s passion for her job got the recognition it deserved last year when she won the 2023 NAWIC Victoria Apprentice Award

82 THE TRADIE

GET AROUND IT

While Zoe initially wanted to become a sparky, the lack of apprenticeships available to her at the time led her to start her tradie life as a labourer/traffic controller.

She started working with construction megacompany Lendlease, where she was able to get a vast breadth of tradie experience under her belt. Funnily enough, Zoe said it was the grungier aspects of being a tradie that she loved the most.

“The blokes who were managing me at the time thought I wouldn’t like it because it’s dirty, it’s formwork, it’s heavy,” she said.

“I just loved being in the core, it’s hard to explain the kind of work I completed, but it was definitely a highlight of my apprenticeship.”

From when she got into trades, Zoe started to develop a taste for supervising.

This made Zoe glad she chose carpentry over electrician as her apprenticeship choice.

“I’ve found a lot of supervisors these days have chippy backgrounds, just in terms of them knowing the structural side and finishes of builds,” she said.

“Electricians can be managers, but there’s not so much in a large

commercial capacity, rather a leading hand role.”

“I want to do site management, so I got a mentor, and they told me to do my pre-apprenticeship on carpentry.

“I’ve spent a lot of my final year of apprenticeship working with subbies on formwork, facades, finishes and the ins and outs of how a project comes together.”

BE THE BOSS

Zoe knew little about the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) until she was mysteriously nominated for an award last year.

She won the award in

question – the 2023 NAWIC Victoria Apprentice Award.

“I became more intrigued by NAWIC, so now I’m always following their events and podcasts,” Zoe said.

“It’s really great to hear from a lot of women in a senior management role, learning how they got their and what I can do to achieve something similar.”

Her growing involvement with NAWIC has helped Zoe lay out her goal for the next 10 years, which

is to become a senior site manager.

“I would need to have more experience with structural foremen, doing fit-outs and the likes,” Zoe added.

“We don’t have any female senior managers where I work, so that’s a goal of mine – to be one of the first.”

While some apprentices are afraid to get their hands dirty, Zoe wasn’t one of them
