It’s 2025 already?!
WAS ANYONE else’s 2023 Christmas a headache?
That’s not to say I don’t enjoy the endless gossiping about which cousin has dropped the bundle and which uncle has the bad hip, but at some point you’ve gotta ask … ‘can we just carve the Christmas ham already? ’
When we were kids, holidays were exactly that – a holiday.
As we get older, it seems the paid work stops, but a whole new collection of responsibilities. Even better, you’re not earning –you’re spending. Presents, flights, accommodation (unless mama’s debilitating foldout mattress is available?) and all the expensive additives that go with it. No more, I say!
This summer holiday, do
something for yourself. Let the fam fend for itself, go walkabout, hang out with your mates… you’ve earned it.
Take me for example - I had my fair share of holiday obligations in 2023, so this year I’m heading to Las Vegas for Christmas.
Nothing says ho-hoho quite like losing a mortgage to the blackjack dealer in the lobby of a rundown motel.
This edition of The Tradie, we’ve got a few tools and toys to treat yourself with while you enjoy a well-earned break.
Stocking stuffers for the Christmas list, maybe something bigger like a sick new bike?
We’ve got it all. As the tradie world turns another leaf to
2025, it’s also a good time to look back on what you’ve accomplished during the year.
Tradies should always be able to look back on a job with a sense of pride, whether it’s a multi-million-dollar ressie build or unblocking a neighbour’s kitchen sink. It’s something all the tradies featured in this edition have in common; taking a moment to look back at their work knowing they’ve created something from nothing.
Aussies – we love our beaches – and there’s no better metaphor for diving into a new year than the unpredictable nature of the surf
Take a deep breath, celebrate what you’ve accomplished this year, and don’t linger on regrets.
You’ll need all the energy you can get to tackle an exciting 2025.

HARD TO imagine a more Australian sight than the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House.
Also hard to imagine something more Australian than our fascination with water.
Surfing, swimming …. Boogie boarding? In this instance, it’s diving.
More specifically, this image is from the Red Bull Cliff Diving Championships.
Aussie diver Rhiannon Iffland took top gong for the women’s competition.
“Wow, that was electric,” she said after her dive.
“I was looking out over the
crowd and trying to take some energy from it.
“It was incredible. It was tough to be consistent this year and it’s getting tougher and tougher, but that makes it all the more rewarding.”
The win off a 21m dive was Iffland’s sixth win of the year and cemented her spot as the top women’s diver of 2024, and where better to do it than in front of a raucous home crowd.
Ukrainian diver Oleksiy Prygorov won the men’s competition, while British diver Aidan Heslop finished the year on top of the men’s ladder.

Elevate to RIPIT! World R
Yamaha stunned sports riders with its iconic YZF-R1. The all-new YZF-R9 is sending similar shockwaves
WAY BACK in 1998, Yamaha unleashed the YZF-R1 on an unsuspecting public. With 150bhp in a sweet handling 175kg package, the new top dog superbike blew away the opposition and established the R-series as the sport bikes to be on. ‘The YZF-R1 creams the opposition,’ gushed Two Wheels magazine at the launch.
Fast forward to 2024, and both the 1000cc YZF-R1 and 600cc YZF-R6 have increasingly become track focused. To the extent that the R6 is now sold as a circuit racer without lights or the ability to road register. That leaves a gap in the market for a bike that is equally capable on the track and road – a gap that the all-new YZF-R9 now fills.
Where the R1 is intended for 80 per cent track and 20 per cent road use, the new YZF-R9 is truly a 50/50 road/race proposition and well placed to welcome new riders to the supersport category. So, while the new bike comes with a super lightweight chassis, aerodynamic bodywork, fierce Brembo braking package and the whole suite of adjustable electronic rider aids, it also comes with a linear and easy to control crossplane inline triple engine, cruise control and a more comfortable riding position than a dedicated track bike.
BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
The versatile YZF-R9 has some significant features that earmark it as a future collectible. For example, it’s the most aerodynamic Yamaha ever built. The chassis is lightest ever fitted to a Yamaha supersport bike. And it features the first low speed valve fitted to a motorcycle shock absorber.
It also looks pretty cool, running MotoGP inspired winglets that really do work by reducing front wheel lift by up to 7 per cent in a straight line and 10 per cent in corners.
The Deltabox chassis is rigidity tuned to be more stiff than an MT-09 but more supple than the R6 with a 50/50 front to rear weight distribution for superb balance.
The riding position is roomier and more comfortable than the latest R6 - more like the original 1999 model R6 positionand the Deltabox chassis weighs just 9.7kg for an overall wet weight with full fuel of just 195kg.
Test riders were lapping within a second of the R6 but doing so a lot easier with the additional torque and mid-range from the CPs motor. Which is one reason the Pata Yamaha race team have decided to race this model in the 2025 World Supersports Championship.
The YZF-R9 is the most aerodynamic bike in Yamaha’s stable yet
Images: Yamaha
The YZF-R9 offers a balanced 50/50 split between road and race capabilities, making it an ideal entry point for new riders in the supersport category
The data transfer function enables lap analysis and allows the rider to communicate with the pit crew in real time
YZF-R9 (middle) takes its place in the R-family lineup among YZFR1M, YZF-R1, YZF-R7 and YZF-R3
Up front the premium Brembo Stylema monoblock front calipers combine with a Brembo radial master cylinder, large 320mm dual front discs, stainless steel brake lines and aggressive pad compounds to offer supersport-level braking performance with exceptional power and feel.
R1-spec KYB front forks run rebound damping in one leg and compression damping in the other for fine tuning the ride and the new KYB rear shock offers linear performance and ultimate control.
SMART SPEEDSTER
Even more impressive is the list of electronic rider aids. The bike runs a six-axis IMU – the same as fitted to the R1 – and so the whole suite of controls (lift, slide, brake) are adjustable. Two custom and four race track modes join the standard Sport, Street and Rain, all viewable on the full colour TFT dash. There is also a data transfer function that allows laps to be analysed and the ability for the rider to communicate with pit crew in real time.
If that all seems track focused, road riders are also looked after with the ability to display navigation via a Garmin app, the ability to download images from your smartphone to the dash, that cruise control feature, a Variable Speed Limiter for those double demerit weekends and self-cancelling indicators.
Add in Yamaha’s awesome third gen quicksifter, an Assist and Slipper clutch and intuitive new switchgear and you have a truly versatile package aimed at not only stepping riders up from the existing YZF-R3 and R7 but attracting new riders to the Supersport category.
EASY RIDER
Over the years, superbikes have become a lot safer – and faster. But the speed limits have remained the same. Which makes a weekend ri de a bit risky – even for the most careful rider. Licences are easily lost, so many riders have migrated from sport bikes to adventure bikes for their adrenalin fix. Because there are very few cops in the bush…
YZF-R9 is set to halt the exodus. A bike that is as quick on the track as it is sure footed on the street. A versatile bike that is easy to ride but will blow your hair back when required. Because to take a leaf out of the MotoGP race book, if a bike is easy to ride, it’s easy to ride fast.
YZF-R9 will be available in Team Yamaha Blue, Matt Black and Intensity White/Redline colours from around May 2025. A special introductory price of $21,349 inc GST ride away will last until 31 March 2025 after which time the price may well go up.

Diablo spins up two new blades for fine finishes and laminate cutting specifically for track saws
DIABLO’S KNOWN by tradies across Australia for delivering accurate and powerful cuts no matter the job. For laminate and fine finish cuts, Diablo has unleashed two new blades sporting a bevy of features that make them ones to pick up in 2025.
Diablo’s latest track saw blades bring precision and durability to professional grade cutting with two distinct models designed to tackle laminate and fine finish applications.
LAMINATE THIS
The Diablo 165mm
Laminate Track Saw Blade (52T) is built with Diablo’s
TiCo™ Hi-Density carbide, specially formulated for maximum productivity and extended cutting life. This high-performance carbide enables clean, precise cuts in both ripping, crosscutting, and plunge-cut applications.
The blade features a thick 1.8mm laser-cut kerf that provides the necessary rigidity for smooth, straight, and most importantly accurate cuts on track saws. Its Triple Chip Grind (TCG) tooth design excels in producing clean finishes with virtually no tear-out, a vital feature for working with delicate laminate surfaces.
Additionally, the Perma-
SHIELD® non-stick coating protects the blade from pesky problems such as heat buildup, gumming, and corrosion, enhancing both durability and reliability.
FINISH LINE
For professionals working on fine finish projects, the Diablo 165mm Fine Finish Track Saw Blade (48T) offers a similarly advanced design. Also featuring Diablo’s TiCo™ Hi-Density carbide, this blade is engineered for maximum cutting performance and longevity. The blade’s thick 1.8mm laser-cut kerf reinforces rigidity for precise, consistent cuts, ideal for finish work
that demands accuracy. Unlike the laminate blade’s TCG tooth design, the Fine Finish blade uses an Alternate Top Bevel (ATB) tooth design, optimising it for fine control, smooth cuts, and reduced tearout, especially in clean finish applications.
The ATB grind enhances the blade’s tracking control, making it suitable for intricate work where a flawless edge is critical. This blade also comes coated with Diablo’ Perma-SHIELD®, providing a non-stick layer that protects against heat, gumming, and corrosion,
Both blades have a thicker kerf which provides more stability and accurate cuts ensuring the blade remains effective and lowmaintenance.
Both Diablo blades deliver high-quality, precision cutting through innovative design and materials, making them valuable additions to any professional toolkit. Whether cutting laminate or achieving a fine finish, Diablo blades combine durability, accuracy, and longevity for superior results.

More than just a pest to clean up – certain types of dust can be harmful to inhale.
Silica dust specifically can lead to silicosis, which is unfortunately increasing

among Australians in recent years.
This makes keeping your site clean just as important for your safety as it is for keeping a project nice and tidy.
When dust becomes a major factor, Metabo sets a new standard in dust control with the industry’s only cordless H-Class vacuum.

Formula for success shared between Bayswater Timber Mitre 10 and Cement Australia
BAYSWATER Timber Mitre 10 has been delivering the goods for tradies for ages.
Since 1956, to be exact.
The business was initially founded by Dutch immigrant family Bill Vanderkolk and his two sons – Frank and Charlie.
Joining the Mitre 10 family in 1992, the business has continued to evolve with the demands of east Melbourne tradies.
The store has scored a handful of National Trade Store of the Year awards, among other silverware.
Continuing the Vanderkolk tradition;
Bayswater Timber Mitre 10
Manager Rob Vanderkolk has been witness to the tradie evolution of the last 35 years.
SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION
For as long as Rob’s been on-site, so has Cement Australia.
“We’ve always had a good partnership with them,” he said.
“Customers love buying Aussie made, which is what they are.”
Rob – much like his tradie customers – is always looking for new and innovative products to stock his shelves.
That’s why when Cement Australia unveiled its Low Carbon Cement, he was fully on board.
“People are always searching for environmentally conscious products, so being able to bring in this (Low Carbon Cement) for select projects has been great.
“It’s not just something our customers are after; Bayswater Mitre 10 is always looking to promote sustainable options, especially if they’re Aussie made.”
Low Carbon Cement is available for request on particular jobs – Rob said
Bayswater Timber Mitre 10 has always stocked Cement Australia products as long as Rob’s been around, and he’s keen to pump up the new Low Carbon Cement
at these early stages, it’s about making customers know about the cement.
“So far, we’ve been able to supply a couple of projects around our area with the Low Carbon Cement.
“So far, they love the stuff – when you explain that it’s similar to the GP Cement
ABOUT CEMENT
AUSTRALIA’S LOW CARBON CEMENT
Low Carbon Cement is a sustainable alternative to Cement Australia’s GP Cement, reducing embodied carbon by 30 per cent. This mixture stems from years of research and development by Cement Australia’s technical team, which formulated GREENCEM® technology. This technology uses supplementary cementitious materials including fly ash, but doesn’t compromise on early setting strength. This product was developed at the Cement Australia NATA - accredited testing laboratory in Brisbane.

Why construction companies need to support NexGen
THE CONSTRUCTION
industry is at a turning point. With a growing skills shortage and an urgent need for greater diversity, it’s clear that action is needed. This is where NexGen comes in.
NexGen is on a mission to transform construction by daring the next generation - especially young women - to break the mould. Right now, women make up only 13 per cent of the construction workforce, and we’re here to change that. Our goal is simple: to inspire, educate, and empower young people to step into this industry and make a lasting impact.
WHY SHOULD YOUR COMPANY CARE?
The WHY is simple. Supporting NexGen isn’t just about being socially responsible - it’s good for business. The construction industry is facing a skills gap that is only widening. By investing in programs like NexGen, you’re directly addressing this challenge, helping to build a future pipeline of skilled professionals who are ready to meet the demands of the industry. NexGen connects students with the construction industry in a meaningful way. Through school visits, careers expos, and hands-on workshops, we’re showing young people what a career
in construction really looks like. We partner with industry leaders to offer students work experience opportunities while they’re still in school and help them secure placements once they leave. This direct connection to real-world jobs ensures that students not only get a clear view of what the industry looks like but also gain practical experience that helps them transition into the workforce.
And it’s not just about filling positions - it’s about building a more diverse and innovative workforce. Companies that prioritise diversity are proven to be more creative, adaptable, and successful. When your workforce mirrors the communities you serve, you can better understand and meet their needs. Diversity isn’t just a niceto-have - it’s a competitive advantage. We also focus on breaking down the
barriers that have traditionally kept women and other underrepresented groups out of the industry. You can be what you can see, and by connecting students with diverse role models and mentors, we’re showing them that construction is a place where they can thrive.
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED

Cyber insurance
Tradie! Prepare yourself for online scams
NOW, MORE than ever, digital scams are everywhere trying to take your hard-earned cash.
So much so that a cybercrime is reported every six minutes in Australia1.
From fake invoice emails to a scam call with AI generated voices of loved ones asking for money, the avenues for scammers to try and weasel into wallets are endless.
For tradies running their own business, keeping your data safe might be the last thing on your mind. Surely hackers wouldn’t bother with a small tradie
business, right?
Wrong. Around 43 per cent of cyberattacks in Australia target small businesses, including hard-working tradies².
DIGITAL LEAKS
Even with the latest software updates and antivirus protection, cybercriminals may still break through your defences. That’s when having a Cyber Liability insurance policy may be essential.
Cyber Liability insurance* covers losses from claims arising from data breaches,
Converge is Australia’s premier event for Sub-Contractors, Project Engineers, Council Fleet Managers, and Large-Scale Construction Contractors across the municipal works, civil construction and infrastructure space.
Through a mixture of live demonstrations, equipment showcases, and conference spaces, Converge will bring industry experts together to share knowledge and deliver solutions for building and maintaining Australia’s future.
lend a hand,” Jesse added.
“The weather wasn’t ideal, but we jumped in together and had a crack. It all came up really well.
“It had a community feel about it – just every team working around each other. Sharing tools and stuff like that – it was a good vibe.”
How Jesse found his stride in carpentry Kick Free
ON THE MARK!
Like many kids, Jesse Plostins had high flying dreams to become a footy player growing up. However, he’s taken that passion to growing his carpentry business in the glitzy Gold Coast residential scene
IF YOU’RE A bloke in Victoria, chances are you’ve dreamt of playing in the AFL one day.
Jesse was one of those kids, and to his credit he made a fair crack of it.
From playing under 18s in the Talent League, to suiting up in the VFL for the Sandringham Dragons, Jesse was a gun.
But injuries kept Jesse sidelined enough to make him consider a different career.
He landed on carpentry.
“I kinda fell into it to begin with,” Jesse said.
“I grew up in Melbourne chasing the Aussie dream of playing AFL – I had put all my eggs into that one basket.
“I fell short … I ended up needing to find a qualification of some kind. A family mate was a builder, so I started working for him as a laborer. Then I ended up going into carpentry.”
LAYING THE FOUNDATIONS
So Jesse go to work on his carpentry life in Melbourne where he did his apprenticeship.
He admitted, however, that the footy dream died a slow death.
“When I started out in Melbourne, I was still putting a bit too much time into footy,” Jesse said.
“When I stopped playing because of a few injuries, the work ethic and quality went up massively.
“That led me to doing more jobs on my own as well as bigger jobs on the weekend.”
Qualifications in hand –Jesse eventually decided to go it on his own.
“The motivation behind starting your business is creating your own brand,” he said. “Having that financial freedom to be able to spend time with the family and do some quality work you can be proud of.”
And where better to set up shop, than the Gold Coast?
GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
Jesse’s plate in 2023 was full enough as is starting his own business on the Gold Coast.
He and his wife Bridget also renovated their home in Victoria before moving up, and decided to start a
family at roughly the same time.
“It’s been a rollercoaster that’s for sure,” Jesse said.
Once he, Bridget and little Leo settled into life in Goldy, he started his business – J Squared Constructions.
Jesse got the idea for his business name from a mate he worked with in Victoria, whose business name is J1 Constructions.
“I jokingly said to him once ‘you’re gonna have to call it J squared soon’
“The name sorta stuck with me.”
J Squared Constructions primarily works on highend residential around the Gold Coast.
Cladding, framing, pergolas … you name it, Jesse and his team does it.
“I didn’t have a lot of business experience with things such as quoting,” he said.
“You learn pretty quick that if you’re not winning jobs, you’re not making money and you’re probably better off going and working for someone else.”
One thing that helped J Squared Constructions get started was Carpentry Australia.
“Once I set up my
business, I signed up,” Jesse said.
“It was really great to have that support behind us and show on our website that we were a part of Carpentry Australia.”
Find out more about J Squared Constructions online at jsquaredconstructions. com/ or on Instagram @jsquaredconstructions
As Jesse pivoted away from Aussie rules, his passion and aspirations in the carpentry world grew to him getting a new team

Vertica here to rescue blokes in the bedroom
Major flex TRADIE
THERE’S NOTHING more frustrating than when you’re at the gym, and your muscles fail you.
Tradies are all-too familiar with this, but for blokes in particular, it takes on a whole new meaning when it comes to the bedroom.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects about 350 million men worldwide, according to Ohh-Med Medical founder and CEO
Daniel Lischinsky. Despite this, men have a hard time finding a solution that fixes the root of the problem.
ENTER VERTICA
While plenty of blokes will try various medications and procedures to fix ED, Vertica has a different approach.
Vertica is a device that uses radio frequency technology to stimulate collagen fibres in penis muscles.
Lischinsky said ED is typically caused by ‘venous leakage’ which is associated with impaired integrity of the penis’ collagen fibres.
“Erectile dysfunction is usually caused by reduced blood flow to the penile erectile bodies or due to penile blood leakage during erection (a condition called ‘venous
leakage’),” Lischinsky said.
“Age-related degenerative changes and atrophy of collagen fibers in the tunica albuginea result in tissue floppiness and the loss of this occlusive function, leading to leakage of blood from the penis during erections with a resulting erectile dysfunction,” he added.
“While first and second line therapies for ED all work on increasing blood flow to the penis without treating the underlying causes now, for the first time, penile venous leakage is actually reversible using Vertica’s unique technology.”
HARD WORKER
Tradies would never take an untested tool to a job without having done their research first.
It’s the same with ED treatments, and Vertica has the data to support its quality.
Vertica was clinically tested at the NeuroUrology unit at the Ramban Healthcare campus in Israel.
Trial lead Professor
Each Vertica unit comes with:
• Vertica® device
• Electrode PAD
• Charger/Adapter
• Ultrasound or RF conductive gel
• Quick reference guide
• User manual
• Device warranty
Gruanwald said “the results demonstrated a significant enhancement of penile erections (up to 89 per cent success rates) and furthermore, a high sexual quality of life and high satisfaction from treatment.”
Unlike other ED treatments, such as medications, Vertica isn’t impacted by the consumption of alcohol or food.
“And they require a doctor’s prescription, so many men feel it affects
Blokes looking to bring back their bedroom confidence can do so with Vertica
the discreteness of the entire process,” Lischinsky added.
The simple interface of Vertica also makes it vastly less intrusive than certain surgeries and procedures men resort to when tackling ED. It is recommended that the device is used three times a week for the first month of use, then twice a week for the second and finally once a week in the third.
Think of it like a workout routine for strengthening those downstairs muscles! Vertica aims to bring back spontaneity and confidence to the bedroom for blokes in a way other treatments cannot.

Footy, tradies … and mental health? They all have more in common than you think, as Lance Picioane discusses
IT’S NO SECRET that
Australian men could be better at discussing mental health.
It’s something that’s been covered regularly across industries in recent years.
It’s also something Lance hopes to change.
“In male dominated industries, the acceptance of conversations is still a challenge and one we’ll be facing for a long time,” he said.
“The Aussie way of not having those chats –
changing the narrative in that space.
“What I’m seeing is that people are not as accountable for their wellbeing as we’d like them to be.
“From a physical, mental and emotional wellbeing point of view.”
START THE CHAT
Lance – a former Aussie Rules player for the Crows, Hawks and Kangaroos – is the CEO of Never Alone Foundation, which aims to fuel conversations around
mental health across Australia.
Lance’s battle with mental health begins much earlier than that – having struggled against his own personal demons across his playing career and beyond.
“It got to a point where I nearly became a statistics we talk about when it comes to suicide,” he said.
“The alpha world I was experience before, during and after my AFL days – I didn’t know where to head.”
In his current line of work, Lance is reagularly visiting/ chatting with trade-based companies and associations
going through it, and they should understand there’s support systems available to them.”
NEVER ALONE
Tradies are one such male dominated industry marred by mental health struggles.
While Lance’s message isn’t limited to any one group, he said there are similarities shared across sports and the trades when it comes to mental health.
“The ability to show vulnerability - That’s been a generational point of view we’ve had to overcome,” he said.
“The more we get around that space and show that it takes a lot of strength and courage to be able to talk about the challenges we’re going through.
“Devastation nearly occurred and I thought there was more to life than that.”
The name – Never Alone Foundation is a good indicator of the kind of message Lance wants heard loud and clear in circles across the nation.
“The mental health system has changed a helluva lot on the last five or so years,” he added.
“We’re still at a point, however, where people feel ashamed for the challenges they’re facing.
“We’re having these conversations to let people know they’re not the only person going through it.
“That being said, they are the most important person
“That we don’t hide away or mask ourselves through alcohol, drugs or abusive behaviour that put us more at risk and on a downward spiral.”
No matter where he’s sparking conversations, Lance said talks about mental health should always be happening and that no one needs to face their issues alone.
“Life isn’t just running through mud with thongs on, it’s not supposed to be like that,” he said.
“Sometimes we go through challenges, but we come out the other side stronger.”

Tending to your mental wellbeing
Q: “HOW CAN I AVOID BRINGING WORK STRESS HOME TO MY FAMILY?”
A: One helpful approach is to create a short routine to mentally switch from work mode to home mode. This could be listening to calming music on the way
home, taking a few minutes to decompress in the car, or even going for a quick walk before heading inside. This small buffer can help you process the day and shift gears so that when you step through the door, you’re more relaxed
and ready to connect with your family.
Q: “WHAT CAN I DO IF I FEEL OVERWHELMED BY WORK STRESS BUT DON’T WANT TO TAKE IT OUT ON MY LOVED ONES?”
A: It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at times, but acknowledging this feeling can be a big first step. Try to find a healthy outlet to process stress, whether it’s exercising, talking to a friend, or journaling about
your day. These methods help release stress in a constructive way, which makes it less likely you’ll unintentionally take it out on the people around you.
Q: “I FIND MYSELF GETTING SHORTTEMPERED WITH MY KIDS AFTER A TOUGH DAY AT WORK. HOW CAN I MANAGE THIS?”
A: If you notice this happening, it might be helpful to build a short relaxation routine after
Tradie wellness coach Aaron Huey talks through stress management for tradesmen who are parents, focused on leaving work stress at work and keeping it from affecting their loved ones at home.

work. Even just five minutes of deep breathing or stretching can help calm your nervous system and reduce irritability. Another tip is to remind yourself that your kids are excited to see you and have no idea how tough your day was. Taking a few moments to reset before engaging with them can make a big difference.
Q: “ARE THERE ANY QUICK TECHNIQUES I CAN USE TO LOWER STRESS BEFORE I GO HOME TO MY FAMILY?”
A: Yes, there are a few techniques you can use, even on the job site, to help lower stress. Try
deep breathing exercises, where you inhale for four seconds, hold for four, and exhale for six. Doing this a few times can help you feel calmer and more grounded. You could also mentally list a few things you’re grateful for, which can shift your focus to the positives before you head home.
Q: “WHAT IF WORK STRESS IS MAKING IT HARD TO ENJOY TIME WITH MY FAMILY EVEN AFTER I’VE LEFT THE JOB SITE?”
A: Sometimes, stress can linger, making it hard to fully relax even when you’re at home. In this
case, it can be helpful to set aside a short time to ‘vent’ or talk through your day with someone you trust, like a friend or partner. If this isn’t possible, try doing an activity with your family that makes you feel present, like playing with your kids, going for a walk, or having a quiet moment with your partner. These can all help shift your focus and lift your mood.

Expert help for truck driving tradies
FOR DECADES, Truck
Assist has been helping the Aussie workforce stay in business and roam the roads through specialist roadside assistance.
More recently this includes tonnes of tradies, who rely on the specialist truck insurance and roadside provider to protect their truck, equipment & machinery, and keep on earnin’.
SPECIALISED SUPPORT
Truck Assist – and parent company NTI – have been ingrained in the Australian trucking landscape for about 50 years.
NTI National Development Manager
Craig Carmody said Truck Assist plays a massive
role in bridging the gap between truck drivers and manufacturers such as Izuzu and Hino.
“Truck Assist really grew and evolved through our relationships with manufacturers,” he added.
“What we did was leverage our existing network of towies and other providers to deliver that service.”
Rigid trucks are the most common kind you’ll find on roads in Australia.
“Of that, nearly 50 per cent aren’t part of the transport industry –they’re mostly tradies,”
Craig said.
“Sometimes we say –‘the builder, the baker the candlestick maker’ –they’re buying trucks.”
Truck Assist is a trusted brand for specialised insurance and 24/7 national roadside truck help*. Gone are the days where tradies can do a band-aid fix or ring up a mate’s mate to come and fix a truck.
“That’s a key thing for us; many people say they can fix trucks, but with new technology these days it’s very different to how it’s been previously,” Craig said.
“It’s important to engage with experts who are heavily connected with the dealers.”
From fuel delivery or a flat battery, all the way up to hydraulic repairs and accident coordination, Truck Assist has the experts available 24/7 everyday across the nation who can help tradies in a bind.
TRIED AND TRUE
Truck Assist’s relationship with tradies goes beyond its specialist insurance and roadside services.
Craig himself is a former diesel fitter by trade and said many employees at NTI have been tradies at some point in their lives.
This has led to Truck Assist supporting a number of tradie associations and initiatives, most notably the Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia (HVIA) Apprentice of the Year Award.
Craig said Truck Assist has been a proud
Tradies have trusted Truck Assist to have their backs on the roads for decades
supporter of the award for more than 15 years.
“There’s really good synergy between us as an insurance provider and trade services,” he said.
“We identified early that we’re a major stakeholder here … if there’s a shortage of tradespeople, that drives up costs and timeliness of repairs.
“We felt it was really important for us to get on board and support these kinds of initiatives.”

Get sideways
Fanging with a group of fun-loving vintage dirt bike hoons
Whether it’s managing immense workloads, or keeping apprentices invested in carpentry, Sean Jellie has tackled it all along his journey
WANT TO GO racing but don’t have the funds? Race your mates for glory rather than sheep stations? Then head down to a vintage dirt track meeting and talk to the Jerkyls – a crew who know how to get sideways.
Gareth ‘Scruff’ Hamill and Andy Baker aka Randy Faker are a couple of retro Sydneysiders who love going fast off-road - but without the serious faces and red tape associated with your average race
meet. And they aim to look good doing it.
Along with like-minded old skool dirt bike riders, they formed the Jerkyls – short for jerks who ride around in circles.
Armed with a fleet of old - and mostly cheap - trail bikes from the 1970s, the Jerkyls adopted Nepean

Mainly so they could race each other around the track, but also so they could channel their inner Steve McQueen, listen to

Sunday Slide is a celebration of aged twowheelers. Long-forgotten
brands Like Maico and Bultaco are dusted off and wheeled out to line up against a sea of DT, IT and XT Yamahas. You might even see the odd Honda Elsinore, or the Dark Prince’s CB350 twin cylinder methanol
burner. Scruff currently pilots a pre-unit Triumph Bonneville from the 1950s, and Randy has a highly modified DT250 and an aircooled, twin shock CR250. And while the bikes – and riders – may be old, they are anything but slow.
Unlike most rider briefings, the pre-race announcements at Sunday Slide are highly anticipated. The safety spiel is delivered with theatrical zeal by Scruff and Randy who annoint newcomers with ‘holy

methanol’ (actually water – methanol is expensive) and they even have a Jerkyl interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer. They’ve been known to run mock baptisms when a new Jerkyl joins the crew, because the Slide happens on a Sunday – something to do with Christianity. So by all means Praise the Slidebut never take it seriously.
AROUND AND AROUND
A typical race day will see a wide variety of riders and bikes in various states of dilapidation front the start gate – right up to schmick big dollar top fuel speedway bikes. Fortunately riders are graded into novice or pro and set out at different times. Newcomers are welcomed and if you have a road bike you can see just how unsuitable it is on a dirt track by cutting a few laps. Just bring a smile and remember this is entertainment.
For the Jerkyls, it’s not so much about the bikes as it is about the fun
Sunday Slide experience.
If you’ve got an old chook chaser gathering dust in the shed, the message is ride it, don’t hide it.
It’s what they were designed to do. Just about any model will work – twostroke or four-stroke.
But beware, sliding is addictive and you may find upgrades are required – as soon as you get up to speed, you need more speed.
So track down a pair of vintage leather trousers, grab that old footy jersey and get set to go sideways.
Another Jerkyl is annointed!

The places painting takes you
Eric’s love for flying took a nose dive when he dropped out of high school. Little did he know then he’d be landing on his feet and loving life as a painter
A 47-YEAR career in painting wasn’t on Eric Gordon’s bingo card when he first dropped out of high school.
“To be perfectly honest, I wanted to be a pilot but I dropped out of school too early,” he joked.
“So, I ended just taking the first job that came along. I went for several jobs and the first one I got was as a painter.”
Eric has worked across a number of companies and sites. He’s been his own boss since 2002, and started his own outfit officially in 2016.
Prime Painting Group
has existed ever since, working on painting gigs across all manner of projects and locations across Victoria.
OVERBOARD
Industrial, commercial, heritage, residential –Eric’s done it and will continue to do it all at Prime Painting Group.
“I’m basically one of those people who doesn’t say no to any job,” he said.
“We did a job last year in Geelong where we had to paint a new sign on a ship. We had to abseil down the side of it and put a new name on it.
“That job came out of the blue and we had a crack at it.
“Why not? It’s just abseiling down the side of a ship … we had painters who could do that.”
While not all jobs involved abseiling on the seven seas, Eric was proud of the work his company had done all around Victoria.
This includes a number of contracts with councils including Mitchell Shire, Ararat Rural City and Mt Alexander Shire. Prime Painting Group was also contracted to work on 19 Westpac branches across the state.
LOADING UP
Abseiling and big-time contracts are one thing, but one of Eric’s fondest memories came early in his painting career.
“We worked on the gold leafing at the Melbourne Concert Hall, I was working on that for six months,” he said.
“I’m one of the few painters in Melbourne who can do gold leafing.
“To be able to look up at that ceiling all these years later and see it still there –I helped do that.”
There’s a lot Eric loves about painting these days, but admitted he missed a few of the of the little things.
“Nowadays, you can buy everything in a can
Prime Painting Group were commissioned to paint the side of the vessel Pacific Dawn in Geelong.
– whereas back in the day, you had to mix a lot yourself,” he said.
“We used to do things like a crocodile finish to make something look like reptile skin.
“I’m pretty sure you can buy that in a can now, anyone can do it these days. But back in the day, you had to know the right formulas and tricks.”

Tools of the trade, and mind! Tradie ZEN
Hailing from Western Australia, Emma Fensom is a fourth-year apprentice plumber, working with ACE+ and for ADCO Constructions as a trainee Site Supervisor.
A LOVER OF yoga and bushwalking, Emma had never contemplated a career in trade until she found herself struggling to find work as a scientist after her university studies.
“I felt overwhelmed by the prospect of figuring out what else I might enjoy, but I knew that I wanted practical work that made a tangible difference,” Emma said.
Emma discovered her hidden talent for hands-on work while renovating her house.
“My husband asked me if I had ever thought of doing a trade as I seemed to have a real knack for renovating,” Emma said.
“My honest answer was no, but the idea appealed
to me and seemed to tick all my boxes,” Emma said.
“My Dad, who is a plumber, was my biggest influence in choosing a trade. I approached him with idea of becoming a tradesperson, and he was more than happy to help me get started!” Emma said.
BEING A FEMALE TRADIE
With a resilient mindset, Emma is a great role model for mature-aged females who are looking to get into the industry.
“I found it hard to start from scratch.
“Particularly when I was not as strong as my colleagues, occasionally causing me to feel inadequate,” Emma said.
“It can also be isolating
when you are the only female on site. You feel like the odd one out and that you must prove your worth. Despite this, I have remained confident and always felt like I belong on a construction site.
“
Emma highlighted how being part of NAWIC, a community of industry women, has allowed her to share her experiences and connect with other females in construction.
MENTORS
Emma cited her first state manager and accomplished female plumber, Eilish and her, current site manager, Simon, as her greatest mentors and role models so far.
“It was a great reassurance knowing that
Emma found her passion while renovating her own house
I had Eilish’s support in the early stages of my career,” Emma said.
“Simon always takes the time to guide me through my role and has helped me map out my future career path to ensure I receive the experience I need to become a site manager.”
“He genuinely cares about each member of our team, and I have learnt a lot from him about what it takes to be an effective leader.”
A PASSION FOR THE OUTDOORS
As well as enjoying her trade, Emma has a passion for yoga, powerlifting, bushwalking and bike riding.
“I have been practising yoga since I was 17 years old. In 2014, I began practicing hot yoga and am now an instructor at a studio,” Emma said.
“My husband and I love to go for bushwalks in the hills and bike rides around the river on the weekends,” Emma said.
FUTURE PLANS
Emma plans to finish her apprenticeship and continue to work for ADCO.
“My aim is to work on a variety of interesting projects with increasing responsibility, and my eventual goal is to progress to the role of Site Manager,” Emma said.
Aside from future career plans, Emma and her husband aim to travel as much as they can, with a possible relocation on the cards.
“My husband and I have plans to move to Melbourne to be closer to family,” Emma said.
“We also have big plans to travel and see as much of the world as possible!”

Toby’s turn to tradie life
what a stache!
With a rocky few years as an apprentice, Toby has landed on an engaging job that works on some ‘pretty sick’ projects
Toby Spicer’s journey to becoming a carpenter has been anything but linear.
From selling real estate, to dabbling in various labour jobs, Toby tried his hand at a few different careers before landing on carpentry.
With family and friends in the trade, Toby was assured that he would be in good company while completing his apprenticeship.
“I have never been a sit behind the desk, using a computer kind of guy. I have always enjoyed hands on stuff, it’s the easiest way I learn.”
Now, six years into his trade, Toby has found his grove and a passion for working on a wide variety of carpentry projects.
OVERCOMING OBSTACLES
Numerous external factors like the COVID, bosses moving overseas, and businesses going into liquidation, have not dissuaded Toby
from achieving his goal of completing his apprenticeship and working in carpentry.
“Find something you are good at and work at it.
Regardless of how difficult it may seem,” Toby said.
Creating and maintaining positive relations between co-workers and bosses has worked in Toby’s favour. After a series of obstacles and setbacks that were out of his control, Toby found a silver lining to his persistence in the trade.
“It turns out that the boss that moved overseas came back to Australia. He gave me a call and offered me a job. I have been working with him ever since.”
FAVOURITE PARTS OF THE JOB
Toby works for building company, Pillar Construction, and his role encompasses everything that falls under the carpentry title, not just a frame or a fixer.
“We do everything that
relates to carpentry for the build,” Toby said.
Toby works on a variety of projects, from high end residential buildings to commercial cites, to schools and aged care facilities.
“At the moment we are working on two heritage listed refurbishments. They are both over one hundred years old. We are
gutting the insides, and refurbishing them,” Toby said.
“I love the variety of work. If you are in a traditional carpentry job, you are doing things like framing and fixing over and over again. It is good in the sense that you can master the skill, but it also gets old pretty quickly.”
“I am really enjoying my job and the company I work for now.”
Toby has been a carpenter for six years
A DESIRE TO SEE THE WORLD
Not one that loves to stick to a rigid routine, Toby enjoys trying new hobbies and skills. However, it is travelling and exploring that has caught Toby’s attention.
After travelling outside of the country for the first time in 2022, Toby travelled with his partner and family to Europe and Japan.
“My favourite countries in Europe were Italy and Scotland. Italy for the food, and Scotland’s landscapes were amazing,” Toby said.
“I wasn’t expecting to enjoy Scotland as much as I did. But we got to experience a white Christmas so that was really cool.”
Toby will head back to Japan in early 2025 for a five-week holiday.
“We can’t wait to get back to Japan and see more of the country.”
Enjoying his trade, Toby loves the variety of projects he gets to work on

WorkArma PPE range
Tradies needing a reliable and comprehensive collection of PPE gear can add WorkArma to their shopping list. This new safety wear brand aims to equip workers across a number of trades with protection that exceeds expectations
NATHAN ‘NATH’ DOWELL from Nudg1e Constructions is no stranger to needing PPE gear for a number of jobs.
Like other tradies, he needs gear that protects his hands, eyes, mouth, knees, ears and head while he frames, cuts, saws and drills his way around worksites.
Thankfully, WorkArma has arrived on the scene delivering everything Nath needs, with a standard of safety that goes above standard PPE gear. He took WorkArma’s PPE range to a site in Clyde North to Melbourne’s east for this test.
TEST #1: ARMS AND LEGS
No matter the job, a tradie will always need a reliable pair of gloves.
They don’t get much more reliable as WorkArma’s gloves, with an extensive range that caters for numerous applications.
Nath said considering he’s wearing gloves nearly all day, he loved his pair of comfortable WorkArma gloves while he was framing timber and cutting rebar.
“The gloves were extremely comfortable,” he said.
“It’s a hot day and we’re cutting a lot of rebar, but these gloves didn’t heat up at all which is great.
Many of WorkArma’s gloves – including the Cut Resistant Gloves Nath used – are tested and certified to Australian standards (ISO 21420 and EN 388) and provide Cut A – Cut F cut protection.
WorkArma has a range of respirators and disposable masks, all designed to protect against harmful particles, smoke and fumes
WorkArma has a tonne of different gloves for a variety of industries, with Nath’s team of carpenters mostly wearing the Cut Resistant Gloves
Nath also loved not having to take the gloves off when using his phone, as the Cut Resistant Gloves are touchscreen friendly.
As well as working with his hands, Nath had to get on his knees for some cutting into cement.
It was here that he was able to appreciate the comfort and top-tier protection of WorkArma’s soft shell knee guards.
“Knees are one thing you wanna keep protected to enjoy a long career as a tradie,” Nath said.
“These were comfy to wear throughout the day.”
TEST #2: EYES, EARS AND MOUTH
Both WorkArma’s goggles and glasses are anti-fog and provide medium impact eye protection (AZ/NZS 1337.1:2010)
Nath could cut rebar for hours comfortably and safely thanks to WorkArma
Nath was able to test a lot of what you see here, but WorkArma’s PPE as you can see its high quality range is massive
For all his cutting and nailing jobs, Nath needed eyewear that protected him from chips and sparks. While cutting into cement, Nath wore a pair of WorkArma’s Safety Goggles, as well as its Half Face Respirator.
“The mask (respirator) did exactly what it needed to, which was block out any dust trying to get in my airways,” Nath said.
“The goggles (and glasses) were super comfy around the eyes considering how long I was wearing them for.”
WorkArma’s range isn’t just limited to glasses, with Nath working popping on the faceshield which is high impacted rated to AZ/NZ 1337.1:2010 Personal Eye Protection (when using a WorkArma faceshield).
Through both tests, Nath was wearing
WorkArma’s Earmuffs, which he found super comfy while wearing for longer periods.
“I used the faceshield while cutting rebar, which we’re using for a shower base,” Nath said.
“I had the earmuffs on as well, they kept the noise down while the faceshield kept the sparks off my face.
“All up, my face felt very well protected.”
DONE AND DUSTED
Nath could harp on all day about how great all the WorkArma pieces he tested were, and that’s the point.
WorkArma isn’t the kind of brand that covers just one section of PPE protection, with its massive range protecting tradies across a plethora of applications.

Fluke’s 1670 Series Multifunction Installation Tester
As inspection equipment continues to get smarter, the last thing tradies need is to be buried by complex interfaces.
Fluke’s new 1670 Series Multifunction Installation Testers make things fast, accurate and simple
INSTALLATION TESTING tools are used to ensure a facility’s electrical systems are installed safely and function correctly.
Faster and simpler – Fluke’s 1670 Series aims to build on the company’s already great reputation for high-quality testing equipment.
We had the perfect tradie in mind for this test –Dean Wilks from Outlook Electrical. He needed to run some mandatory tests on a site in Melbourne, so we paid a visit with one of the new multifunction testers from the 1670 Series – the 1674FC.
TEST #1: SPEEDY OPERATOR
The 1670 Series is all about speed.
Testing 30 per cent faster lets tradies like Dean get on with other jobs sooner. The 1670 Series also significantly speeds up documentation. Gone are the days of slogging through menus and manually pulling everything together. With the 1670 Series, documentation time is cut by 50 per cent, making the whole process quicker and easier..
BRAND:
Fluke’s fantastic TruTest™ software helps making work simple before, during and after testing.

customers.
Dean particularly liked being able to establish his own templates before testing, which meant the data he was after quickly appeared on easily readable datasheets.
“When I add up how much time all this saves, it easily saves me over 50 per cent of time I’d spend compared to manually doing everything,” he said.
With Fluke Connect, that data is stored at a central point, making it a piece of cake for tradies to manage and share key points of data with customers.
tough approved! TEST
TEST #2: EASY FIXER
One major reason behind the speediness of the 1674FC is the Auto Test* function.
This allowed Dean to run the entire test sequence with the press of just one button.
“This is great, easy and quick,” he said.
“The brains in this thing is incredible, it’s so smart.”
Dean did his mandatory testing, but loved being able to customise an auto sequence test as well as set multiple pretest sequence tests.
These had him well prepared for some of the more advanced tests he could do as a sparky.
When flicking through the menu of the 1674FC, was stoked to see the new testing features, including parameter limits, interference level indication, surge protection device (SPD) and insulation monitoring device (IMD).
“It’s been extremely easy to use, with a couple of touches I can get to test options,” he said.
“For example if I go to functions - I can check voltage, continuity, and a bunch of other important tests quickly.

AFishing generalist
What gear you need and when
In this feature, guide Tim O’Reilly discusses a fisho for all bases. Someone who can adapt to any fishing scenario presented at the time. This doesn’t necessarily mean a house and shed full of fishing gear or the fanciest boat in the neighbourhood. What we are talking about is someone ready and willing to catch everything from the tiniest jungle perch in a mountain stream to a yellowfin tuna out off the continental shelf.
Some people giggle at the thought of fishing requiring a decent level of fitness. Many think it’s purely the domain of beer swilling buddies shaking off the confines of their home life to enjoy the great outdoors and soak a worm. When in fact, many of the modern fishos out there are flying solo or taking on serious adventure with their buddies. Make no mistake, when fishing is taken seriously, it can definitely be considered a sport. Arduous

toil if you’re into jigging or throwing big poppers around! Ripping straight into it, the most useful equipment for a fishing generalist is included below each segment. You might only need a portion of the equipment listed, depending on budget and the size of your tackle room.
The fly fisher
Fly fishing is a magical art form in the right hands.
Rhythmic casts back and forward with a weighted line used to present small and quite delicate presentations at feeding fish. Sight casting is the epitome of this art form, when angler and fish play a craft game of cat’n’mouse.
Sadly in my hands, fly casting is a bit asymmetrical. I much prefer the pragmatism of making multiple presentations at moving fish, continuously putting a presentation where it needs to be without having to wind back in.
Even if not a purist or even a perfectionist when it comes to casting, a fishing generalist will usually have a basic working knowledge of fly fishing. Certain circumstances really lend themselves to fly fishing over all other forms, predominately when tiny, lightweight, lifelike presentations are needed. Fussy fish with good eyesight such as brown trout in the highland streams or permit on the saltwater flats need light leaders and delicate presentations to fool them into eating an artificial offering.
A fly fishing generalist will normally have some wading pants, some ruggedised footwear, clothing to suit walking in rough terrain and the determination and
fitness levels required to walk kilometres through dense scrub and heartache in the hope of finding their dream fish at the top pool. Similarly, the saltwater fly fisho will have full sun protection and the ability to wade through acres of shallow water on the flats trying to fool their skittish counterparts.
Gear: Three Fly rods and reels. A Light (4-6Wt)
Med (8-9Wt) & Heavy (11-12wt). Best if spools are interchangeable, so angler can swap between floating and sinking lines for each outfit.
Lure casting
Modern spin and overhead (baitcaster) outfits can cast artificial lures a long way. And accurately in the right hands. That little stick 35m away is quite reachable with todays outstanding reels. Both spin and overheads are mostly loaded with braided lines, growing thinner and stronger as time progresses. Casting distances have well and truly picked up in the last decade. This has allowed species to be targeted that might have been off the radar previously.
In the past, tuna were caught by trolling or burleying up to attract the fish close to the vessel. These days, some incredible hardware is being employed to catch giant tuna with spinning rods as long accurate casts with large spinning reels and strong-hooked stickbaits reach feeding southern bluefin schools.
Throwing all manner of hard bodied lures, soft plastics, vibes and jigs has been around for 50 years targeting all manner of inshore light tack species.
Even fishing guides love a nice barra
Huge dogtooth taken on the heavy gear
FEATURE
Australian freshwater and saltwater fishing scenes have been dominated by terry-towling hatted, stubby short wearing die hards for many of a year. Tough individuals who were prepared to row, walk and hike in search of that next adventure. These days, the new fishing generalist might employ all manner of transport and gadgetry to reach their fishing holy grail. A cursory glance at the local fishing hero on you tube will prove this. But social media legends aside, a few simple pieces of equipment and fishing paraphernalia can help a keen fisho turn into a true fishing generalist. Being at the ready for a mate’s call up or planning solo missions on Google Earth into the wilderness, backed by todays awesome technology and safety tools (e.g. EPIRB, GPS & digital maps). Recognising that small bite windows and gaps in the weather can produce outstanding results with less time taken.
Gear: Two spinning rods (2-3 piece travel rods make cartage easier) in 20-25lb or PE1 and 30-40lb or PE 1.2-2 with the best quality spinning reels you can afford (3500-4000 for the lighter combo and 4500-5000 for medium combo). One of two overhead outfits, normally in the 4-8kg range fitted with bait caster reels (Diawa and Shimano best) and 20-30lb braided line.
Ultra light plastics and hardbodies
Particularly for the generalist fisho who loves fishing the sweet water streams, fresh water creeks and spinning the saltwater creeks and flats. Australia might be and arid, dry country but there is literally tens of thousands of rivers, creeks and streams, many with endless fishing possibilities.
Once again proving the fishing generalist needs a certain amount of fitness and an adventurous spirit, these techniques rely on mobility, walking or getting your tiny boat over obstacles and across shallows in almost all instances. Your best bet at getting away from the crowds these days often rests in these locations. From trout fishers casting tiny plastics in a cool water mountain stream to an avid sooty grunter angler walking through tropical jungle.
Gear: Ultra light spinning rod 2-4kg with 1000-2000 reel and 4-10lb braid
Light jigging and vibing
This style of fishing revolutionised the inshore sports fishing scene just after the soft plastics craze. In truth the fishos employing slow pitched jigging and vining are amongst those putting fish consistently in the esky. So many bread and butter species fall to these techniques around Australia, you would need two books just to cover it.
Light inshore jigging techniques have improved spectacularly in response to the gear created for the technique. Medium spinning rods or specialised slow pitched overhead outfits make the job of line pay-out and retrieval that much easier. The whole water column can be covered with ease and even those fish down at 60100m of water which can be hard to target successfully with bait are on the radar. Jigs and vibes sink quickly, making them less affected by current flow.
Gear: Slow pitched jigging overhead outfit with matching reel spooled with 40-60lb braid or a Medium spin outfit 1220kg matched with 5000-6000 reel and 50lb braid (PE 3)
A lovely blue bastard taken on the flats
Bait, burley and livies
No matter what techniques a lure fisherman employs, it is still hard to beat the humble pilchard or squid for putting fish on the deck when fishing reefs, shoals, rocky patches, surf gutters and deep dropping. Bait consistently lands fish even when the quarry are a little fussy.
A true fishing generalist will happily switch between artificial and bait when the circumstances call for it. A live bait slung out to a fussy predator or one which is fixated on the real thing can be hard to refuse. Capturing the live bait can be a very skilful process in itself and a crucial part of the fishing journey. Just ask the guys catching slimies to target striped marlin on the NSW central coast. Or the old fella out cast netting prawns to turn them into threadfin salmon or barramundi.
Fresh and live can make a huge difference.
Procuring bait is the source for many a keen fisher growing up and sadly many of the modern fisherman have never pumped a yabby, dug a worm or grovelled in the sand for a pippi. These are foundational skills and set the tone for what comes next, a deeper appreciation of food
out there.
Burley includes anything which might trigger fish to begin feeding in a confined area close to where the fishing is taking place. From a boat or the shore, burley made up of fish or prawn scraps or tiny morsels of anything they might find appealing can be super effective. Sharks can become a little problematic up in the tropics.
Gear: too many options to cover all. A long beach rod with Alvey type reel, a long spinning rod for surf and beach options, a heavy overhead outfit for reef options and hand lines to cover all bases will cover most scenarios.
Heavy offshore jigging and casting
The bluewater scene is alive and well in Australia and although the fishing generalist needs access to a decent boat for this style of fishing, it is amazing what can be achieved with a medium sized trailer boat. I’ve seen keen fishos taking 5m boats to the outer Barrier
It pays to be ready with lure choice
FEATURE
Reef and continental shelf on many an occasion. Catch and release has become a far greater force in the modern fishing scene, so skies and refrigeration become second fiddle to casting space and fuel capacity. These two styles of fishing are quite different from each other. Heavy casting involves flinging poppers, stickbaits, soft plastics and diving lures around structure and current flow off-shore. All manner of reef
and pelagic species from kingfish in the south to spanish mackerel and giant trevally in the north will be on the hit list. High speed jigging normally involves heavy metals being dropped to bottom and retrieved erratically to trigger a bite from any predator sitting vertically in the water column.
These types of fishing can be hard on the body and rough on the wallet. To throw casts all day with heavy braided lines, thin strong gloves can provide protection from cuts as well as the sun. An unobtrusive rod buckle can save a lot of nasty bruising around the stomach and groin area if fighting hard pulling fish is a common occurrence.
Gear: Two spin outfits. Long casting rod and short jigging rod matched with 8-10000 reel and 60-100lb braid (PE 4-7)
Light and heavy tackle gamefish
The fishing generalist might be a little out of their league on this last front but a willingness to give it a crack and learn from others with more experience is all that’s required. Game fishing is best undertaken with well set-up boats allowing a spread of lures and teasers to be trailed behind the boat.
Target species are normally big tuna, dolphin fish, wahoo, mackerel and most notably the billfish species including sailfish, black, blue and striped marlin.
Gear: Heavy overhead trolling outfits ( 15-50kg) to suit target species usually with large line capacity and monofilament.

APM
and
EWIT
Outside of EWIT, you’d be hard pressed to find someone as driven to achieve 30 by 30 than Renee and the team at APM
ENABLING better lives
– that’s something APM strives to do on a daily basis.
The employment company has been around Australia for about 35 years, employing 6,500 people locally and 14,500 internationally across 11 countries.
“We’re all about enabling better lives – helping people get back into the workplace, or find employment as well as rehabilitation services,” APM National Manager of
Apprenticeships Renee Briggs Gordon said.
GROWING POINTS
More recently, APM has opened a new avenue for enabling better lives through its apprenticeship support offerings as an Apprentice Connect Australia provider in Victoria.
While adding apprenticeship services to its offerings, APM was also able to specialise in two key areas in dire need for growth – clean energy and women in male dominated trades apprenticeships.
“Within those two services, we focus a lot more of our mentoring and support services –particularly for women in male dominated trades,” Renee added.
“As we know, there are challenges for women not only getting into trades, but staying in them as well.
“As an apprenticeship within that field of expertise, we’re able to help support and retain right through to completion for an apprentice.”
While supporting apprentices is crucial, Renee added APM also aims to help employers grow their understanding of what a diverse pipeline of apprentices looks like.
“Sometimes, employers might not recognise they’ve got unconscious bias or they might not know how to create a diverse and welcoming work environment,” she said.
“We’re there to assist them do that, to help
them attract all kinds of apprentices to their workforce, and providing a safe and inclusive workforce as well.”
JOINING EWIT ALLIANCE
Earlier this year, EWIT introduced the EWIT Alliance as a practical approach to addressing diversity challenges in the trades. The Alliance serves as formal recognition that a company, business or organisation endorses EWIT’s ambitious goal of achieving 30 percent female representation in trades by 2030.
Renee has known EWIT founder and CEO Hacia Atherton for some time, and when word got out about the Alliance, she couldn’t wait to get on board.
“When I was working for another company –who was also focussing
APM has long been dedicated to helping those in need find employment
on getting more women into trades – I did the unthinkable and coldcalled Hacia,” Renee said.
“Hacia had just started EWIT … I gave her a call and had a chat, and have been a firm fan of hers ever since.
“When APM got the contract, and EWIT announced their Alliance, I said yes please!
“We [APM] have got to get on board with this
“We share that vision of 30 by 30 and this is our area of expertise – getting more apprenticeships.”

Training + technology: Australia’s welding skills shortage requires a multi-pronged solution
AUSTRALIA’S WELDING
industry continues to grapple with a severe skills crisis, with a projected shortfall of more than 70,000 welders by 2030. We have reached a critical juncture that poses a substantial threat to our national economic growth and productivity—with major infrastructure projects already at risk of delays due to a lack of skilled workers.
Welders are more in demand than ever, due to large-scale initiatives like AUKUS, South Australia’s $9.9 billion Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project and the renewables revolution, as well as metropolitan infrastructure projects such as the $12 billion
Sydney Metro and the $5 billion Melbourne Airport Rail Link. So, while larger firms absorb as much available talent as possible, small to medium businesses across the general manufacturing sector are left unable to access the workforce they need to continue operations.
The worsening conditions make it imperative for construction and manufacturing businesses, industry bodies, and government agencies to work together, adopting a multi-pronged approach that includes investment into both training and technology.
WHAT’S CAUSING THE WELDER SKILLS SHORTAGE?
Even before the global pandemic, the number of welding trade workers in Australia was in steady decline—falling by 8 per cent in five years, from 75,800 in 2014 to 69,600 in 2019. Completion rates of welding apprenticeships are also dropping, some by as much as 23 per cent each year.
The impact of COVID-19 only exacerbated the
issue, as the closure of international borders to migrants and short-term workers had the effect of further shrinking the available labour pool. Welding job vacancies have significantly increased in recent years, by 87 per cent in Queensland and 80 per cent in Western Australia—the two most impacted states.
Another factor is Australia’s changing demographics: an ageing workforce means that around 30 per cent of welders are now aged over 45 years. As the industry faces a wave of retirements in the decade ahead, with fewer younger people entering the profession, welding positions will simply become impossible to fill. These are grave concerns, given how critical welding will be to the success of our renewable energy revolution. However, the problem is not unique to Australia, with Europe, the UK and North America all experiencing massive welding shortages.
THE NEED FOR UPSKILLING
Weld Australia has
developed an innovative solution: a microcredentialling program that is designed to produce job-ready, certified welders within four to 12 weeks. This rapid training will complement existing apprenticeship models, while accelerating the process of getting welders onto sites in order to fill the growing skills gap. This program offers an immediate solution by providing students with targeted procedure training aligned with the ISO 9606 standard. Graduates are certified to perform specific welding procedures so they can start contributing to the workforce much sooner. At the same time, they are able to continue their long-term apprenticeship pathway to become fullyqualified. In fact, students who complete the ISO 9606 micro-credential are better-positioned to complete further training, equipped with hands-on industry experience and practical skills.
A key objective of the micro-credential program is to create rapid pathways for marginalised groups, tapping into a pool of
Weld Australia is working to build partnerships with industry stakeholders to develop pipelines for more welders to enter the workforce
potential workers who have traditionally been underrepresented in skilled trades. After Weld Australia’s success with prison welding programs in Victoria, there are plans to extend the program to school leavers, indigenous communities, women in welding initiatives, and the long-term unemployed. Providing participants with the skills they need to enter the workforce will not only fill the talent gap but improve employment outcomes for these groups—helping them secure stable, high-paying careers in welding. This program is not intended to replace existing apprenticeship models but rather to complement them, providing a full spectrum of short, medium, and long-term solutions to the growing skills gap. The new approach offers flexibility for both individuals and employers, accelerating the process of getting welders onto job sites while still supporting the long-term training pathways of apprenticeships.
Rather than competing with traditional apprenticeship programs, our micro-credential approach fills the gaps and enhances the offering. It allows students to start contributing to the workforce quickly, while still keeping the door open for further, long-term training. This way, we have a comprehensive approach to addressing the welding shortage with

short, medium, and longterm solutions.
Weld Australia is currently working to establish welding academies and build partnerships with industry stakeholders to deliver the micro-credential program where it’s most needed, ensuring a steady pipeline of workers to regions facing the highest demand.
SOLVING THE PRODUCTIVITY CHALLENGE
In the construction sector, lack of productivity is one of the major barriers to project completion - resulting in only 50 per cent of project owners meeting delivery deadlines, according to KPMG’s Global Construction Survey. While the number of construction workers has increased in the past decade, output per worker has reduced. The average person now works two hours less per year, and yet their output is around 25 per cent lower.
For business that are already grappling with skills shortages, greater productivity is the key to raising worker output. This will be crucial to the sector’s ability to deliver on the Federal Government’s pipeline of $120 billion infrastructure spend and $800 billion investment in renewable projects by 2050. Improvements to the industry’s productivity performance is also a boon for the Australian economy, saving an estimated $47 billion annually.
Weld Australia’s 2024 Member Survey revealed that half of Australia’s welding workshops are
operating at 80 per cent capacity or below, largely because of a lack of skilled workers. Over 42 per cent of welders are spending eight hours or less on site every day, and one-quarter spend less than two hours of their shift doing actual welding. Businesses that maximise their efficiencies benefit from cost savings and better use of resources, with productivity gains leading to faster completion times.
INVESTMENT IN ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES
Advanced technologies, including automation, robots and collaborative robots (also known as cobots), play an essential role in driving efficiencies and improving productivity. Automation has the power to accelerate processes and eliminate workflow delays, errors, and bottlenecks, while delivering superior quality outcomes with higher repeatability.
A report commissioned by Google noted that automation could deliver a $1.2 trillion boost to the Australian economy by 2030 through productivity gains. Increases in productivity also enable manufacturers to adapt quickly to changing customer needs and maintain a sustainable competitive advantage in domestic and export markets.
Cobots are robotic arms that are designed to work alongside human beings— being smaller, lightweight, more versatile, and easier to program than industrial robots. By taking on mundane and repetitive tasks, they don’t replace workers but
rather free up their time and energy to focus on high-value activities that require critical thinking and creativity. Cobots are also capable of collecting enormous volumes of data that can be leveraged in areas such as predictive maintenance.
Importantly, the use of robots and cobots actually improves safety for welders and other manufacturing workers, by reducing dangerous and physically-demanding work and removing welders from exposure to potential hazards, toxic fumes, UV radiation, heat and sparks. As a result, workplace injuries are predicted to fall by 11 per cent and unburden the average Australian of two hours of the most tedious and manual work each week, creating a safer and more satisfying working environment.
Despite the clear benefits—from improved productivity and quality to worker safety and satisfaction—Australia tends to lag in digital adoption, and the welding industry is no exception. Advanced technologies are becoming a crucial factor in the success of a welding business, but uptake of cobots and robots remains low in comparison to other advanced economies.
Australia recently dropped from 18th to 35th (out of 37) globally for industrial robot application.
With advancements in robotics and automation technology, and the likelihood of increased industry uptake, the issue of employment rates is inevitably raised.
Media outlets frequently report that
the more automated the manufacturing industry becomes, the less jobs there are available. This is simply untrue. Robotics and automation technology make manufacturing processes more efficient and increase productivity and competitiveness. This is particularly important for small-to-medium businesses which, in Australia, account for over 90 per cent of the manufacturing industry.
This increased productivity and competitiveness can increase demand, creating new job opportunities, particularly for highlyskilled workers, and have a positive impact on wages. Robots substitute labour activities but do not replace jobs.
According to the International Federation of Robotics, less than 10 per cent of jobs are fully automatable. Increasingly, robots are used to complement and augment labour activities; the net impact on jobs and the quality of work is positive.
Technological innovations allow businesses to make better use of human skill and innovation, with machines taking over mundane tasks so that employees can focus on critical thinking, quality and creativity. This opens up new opportunities for businesses to improve and optimise their operations.
In light of this, Weld

Oh Canada
From “can’t lead the boys’ club” to leading on a global stage
IN A POWERFUL shift for women in trades, Empowered Women in Trades (EWIT) is gearing up to go international, taking Australia’s ambitious “30 by 30” mission—the push for 30 per cent female representation in skilled trades by 2030 - to Canada. Leading this historic move is Hacia Atherton, recently recognised with a prestigious 40 Under 40 award for her visionary leadership. As EWIT’s new Chair and the first female CEO of a large plumbing company in Australia, Hacia is setting the pace for change across borders.
For Hacia, this journey is deeply personal. “Coming from a fifth-gen plumbing family, I’ve regularly been told women ‘can’t lead the boys’ club,” Hacia says. “And now we’re not just leading—we’re setting the standard on a world stage.” With Canada jumping on board, EWIT’s impact now extends beyond Australia, showcasing the global momentum behind women in trades. Canada’s enthusiastic adoption of the 30 by 30 mission reflects a shared determination to create inclusive, diverse workplaces in traditionally male-dominated industries, proving that the push for change is universal.
MAKING MOVES
As Hacia transitions to Chair, Melinda Davis steps into the General Manager role for EWIT Australia. Melinda’s energy and dedication make her a
natural fit for driving EWIT’s progress forward. “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and the village we’re building. Alongside our phenomenal team, I’m excited to lead EWIT Australia into this next phase, as we continue to break down barriers for women in trades and create a culture for all humans to thrive,” said Melinda.
And Hacia’s role with EWIT is only part of her influence. She’s also making waves as the first woman to lead Reed Plumbing. “I’m thrilled to welcome Hacia as our CEO,” said Jon Reed, Founder of Reed Plumbing. “Her track record as a leader and her deeprooted passion for change are exactly what we need to propel Reed Plumbing forward.” Reed Plumbing covers essential services from drain clearing and relining to advanced leak detection. With Hacia at the helm, the company
is primed to set new standards in innovation, training, and inclusivity.
“As CEO of Reed Plumbing and Chair of EWIT, I’m excited to collaborate with both teams to drive real change,” Hacia added. “Together, we’ll make plumbing a respected career path for women, especially through programs in schools. The future is about a trade industry that celebrates diversity.”
With Hacia’s leadership at both Reed Plumbing and EWIT, Australia is showing that women can not only thrive, they can lead in spaces traditionally dominated by men.

Breaking bias
The ‘not so little things’ affecting female tradies
FEMALE TRADIES
are increasingly being called upon to meet the growing demand for skilled workers in the construction industry. However, with an alarming 72 per cent of women leaving their apprenticeships within the first year, it’s clear that issues like harassment and microaggressions onsite need urgent attention if we’re to meet the demands. While many workplaces offer flexible arrangements, progressive policies, competitive wages, and promises of professional development, the reality on the ground can be very different.
In response to this, the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and TDC Global conducted a study - The Not so Little Things Affecting Women in Construction. This research delves into the experiences of women facing microaggressions and harassment in the construction industry and explores how businesses can more effectively address and prevent these issues. Microaggressions are small, often overlooked comments, actions or assumptions that can have significant impact on mental health, job satisfaction and career progression. These behaviours are frequently tied to unconscious bias in the aggressor. The
survey revealed that 88 per cent of women reported experiencing microaggressions in the workplace , with 78 per cent of those in trades roles experiencing them firsthand. So, how can businesses work to combat microaggressions and harassment in the workplace? Here are some key recommendations from the report:
SUPPORT AND REPORTING MECHANISMS
Provide tools and resources that encourage women to speak up, including clear and accessible reporting channels, anonymous options, and data linking reporting to financial outcomes. It’s also
NAWIC’s The Not so Little Things Affecting Women in Construction study aims to highlight how some of the less noticeable things are harming gender diversity in the trades
recommended that businesses conduct specific exit interviews for women to better understand and address the underlying bias.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
Importance of training on unconscious bias, safety and onboarding, mandatory training for
new managers, education on the subtler forms of discrimination and their impact, development of consistent, widereaching education programs and to build awareness around the financial consequences of microaggressions.
ACTIVE BYSTANDER APPROACH
Encouragement of peers to call out inappropriate behaviour, importance of male allies in changing workplace cultures and providing allyship training.

Know who you are dealing with
IN VICTORIA last financial year 2,862 companies became insolvent and nationally 27 per cent of all insolvencies were in the construction industry
which was almost double the next highest industry. This figure is only rising, with 328 building sector insolvencies in the month of July this year alone. The year construction has a long history of business failures and phoenixing. With rising costs of materials, wage rises, costs of living, delays and fixed price contracts, subcontractors are putting themselves at risk everyday not knowing who they are doing business with. As a sub-contractor how can you protect your business?
STABLE PARTNERSHIP
The most important step is to manage the risk
and to do what you need to understand the risk.
Do your due diligence, know who you are dealing with. Understanding a businesses financial health such as outstanding debts and court proceedings may impose potential risk for your cash flow. It could also strengthen your relationship with that business if they have a strong credit history meaning timely payments and smoother transactions for your business. It is important especially with larger contracts that subcontractors get key business intelligence on who they are working for. The MPA, in partnership
with MGA Insurance and Austbrokers, have developed a new business intelligence product for Painters - the Contractor Report. These reports provide a visibility of court actions and insolvency notices, ATO reportable tax debts, reporting of company roles and director relationships with other companies and confirm the details
The Contractor Report is an intuitive tool that will help protect tradies and their back pockets
of the organization you are dealing with and are getting paid.
In construction nothing guarantees getting paid, however this report can provide more clarity on who you are dealing with and if there are details you really need to know.
