The Master of Gerontology degree programme takes a multi-disciplinary and flexible approach that caters to adult learners who wish to upgrade themselves or switch careers. Many attractive job prospects await the graduates as the government has made the development of the eldercare sector a high priority. Short study trips and interaction with foreign experts will introduce students to policies and programmes of other countries. The 18-month programme inspires students through meaningful in-class activities, challenging group projects and various social activities. The classes are held over weekends which fit into the schedules of most professionals. For more information, you may contact us on 6248 5783 / 5787 or email : graddip&master@unisim.edu.sg.
Quotes from our students :
Yeo Joo Hock General Manager (Private Sector) (Student, Gerontology Programme, 2012) “As a person who is totally not from any social work or healthcare sectors, this Master of Gerontology is a total eye opener for me. I am even more determined to partake in this social process to improve the conditions of the elderly in society.”
Eunice Tan Manager, Special Projects for Alzheimer’s Disease Association (Student, Gerontology Programme, 2012) “The whole learning journey in the Gerontology Programme has been very enriching and fulfilling for me. I have enjoyed every bit of it. I would highly recommend all my colleagues from the eldercare sector to take this programme!”

Hydrolyzed collagen is extracted from the bones and skins of animals. The pure collagen remains after the minerals are eluted by using olefin acid. With the help of enzymes, the pure collagen becomes the hydrolyzed collagen that can be easily absorbed by human body. HYDROLYZED COLLAGEN Scientists have conducted many clinical research studies on hydrolyzed collagen. Some of the interesting results include the following: 1. Hydrolyzed collagen has been shown to increase the number of osteoblasts and suppress the activities of osteoclasts. In this way, it modifies the constituents of bones and the distribution of bone minerals. 2. It helps to maintain the density of bones effectively 3. It increases the strength of bones. 4. The hydrolyzed collagen also helps to reduce the pain suffered by patients with arthritis while at the same time improving their joint functions. Hence, it is recommended that people who are at higher risk of getting osteoporosis or arthritis and those already suffering from these diseases, should take hydrolyzed collagen to enhance the health of their bones and joints. HOW TO SUPPLY COLLAGEN? Collagen is found in the bones and skins of animals e.g. in beef tendons, pigs’ feet and spare ribs, chicken wings and skin, fish skin and cartilage etc. A 60-year old man must take at least 5 grams of collagen to meet his body’s daily requirement. This means a minimum consumption of 5 kilograms of pigs’ feet is needed! Thus, it is almost impossible to get adequate collagen from one’s diet alone. Therefore, the middle aged and the elderly are generally advised to consume collagen supplements. HOW TO CHOOSE HIGH-QUALITY “HYDROLYZED COLLAGEN” The following are important points to consider when buying good quality collagen supplements: 1. Techniques: Collagen is generally considered healthy food. There are two main ways to hydrolyze collagen, either by water or enzyme hydrolyzing techniques. Hydrolyzing by enzymes is a safer method as it does not involve the use of strong acids or alkali, which breaks the chemical structure of collagen. 2. Raw materials: High-quality collagen comes from the healthy skin of animals and should have a polypeptide structure. Experts have pointed out that collagen which has a molecular weight of about 3000Da are more easily absorbed and utilized by human body. 3. High-quality collagen has no fishy smell. It is considered healthy and safe. It dissolves easily in water. 4. High-quality collagen has high amounts of amino acids like hydroxyproline, glycine, lysine, etc. These amino acids are important building blocks for the production of collagen in the human body.

SUPTA PAWANMUKTASANA (LEG LOCK POSE)
STAGE 1 STEP 1 Bend the right knee and bring the knee towards the chest. Keep your leg straight. Interlock your fingers and clasp the hands just under the knee to draw the knee as close as possible towards to chest while keeping shoulders and head stay relaxed and perform rhythmic belly breathing. STEP 2 Inhale deeply to the top of the lungs and hold the breath, lift the head and shoulders off the ground and attempt to touch right knee to the nose. Remain in this position for a few seconds with comfortable breath retention. Exhale gradually and lower the head and shoulders back down to the floor. Feel free to repeat this 3 times and release pose, relax the body for a few seconds before moving onto the left leg.
STAGE 2 STEP 1 Bend both knees and bring thighs to the chest. Interlock your fingers, clasp your hands onto the shins just below the knees. Perform a few rhythmic belly breathing. STEP 2 Inhale deeply filling the lungs with air, hold the breath and raise head and shoulders off the ground, aim to bring your nose to the space between your knees. Holding the pose with a comfortable breath retention for a few seconds. As you exhale, slowly lower your head, shoulders and legs to let go of the pose. Practice this 3 times. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Please avoid this pose if you have serious back condition, such as slipped disc and sciatica. DIOCLETIAN’S PALACE Diocletian’s Palace, built in 293 AD, is located in the city of Split and was originally used as a military fortress to protect the emperor. When the neighbouring city of Salonika fell the Romanians fled into the palace grounds to protect themselves from the barbarians, and continued to live there. More and more houses were built around the Palace, and started to form a small city. UNESCO included the historical city of Split - with its amazing artwork such as the underground Diocle sculpture, Jupiter sculpture, stone carving sarcophaguses and sphinx statue - in the World Cultural Heritage register in 1979.
