DEAR FRIENDS AND BUYERS, On behalf of our parents, Scott and Karen, welcome to the Hummel Land & Cattle Retirement Dispersal. We are honored to have everyone view, analyze, and hopefully bid fast and often on this herd. Most of these cows will pay their way with the babies they are carrying right now. These are good, functional cows with solid pedigrees. They have previously earned their keep or they wouldn’t be here. This is Dad’s retirement sale; he isn’t holding anything back. Last year, our family agreed that sometime in 2022 this auction was happening even before a life-changing chain of events occurred this past summer.
DEAR FRIENDS & CATTLEMEN:
Anyone who knows Dad would agree, he loves cattle and loves “cowboying” in his own way, a way that has taken a toll on his physical capabilities and tested all our family’s mental fortitude at times. A farmer never seems to retire or wants to, and Dad has had to face this challenge the last couple years. Dad turned 71 years old on August 29th, a birthday that for a while we weren’t sure he would get to celebrate. On April 24th, after dinner that evening, Dad had an accident while hauling a load of round bales with a tractor and wagon. In seconds, the tractor spun sideways, the wagon tongue broke, and the tractor barrel rolled one time with Dad going for the ride, getting crushed and released under the tractor during the roll. Miraculously, the tractor rolled and reengaged with the wagon and then slid the rest of the way down the hill with dad precariously positioned between the tractor and wagon. The 24 hours following the accident went like this: emergency surgery for collapsed lungs and to
control internal bleeding, 14 broken ribs, a broken sternum, broken clavicle, multiple vertebrae in the spine, and the attending physician telling us that Dad’s trauma was in his Top 5 all time, not a category one would want to be in. It’s a miracle and a blessing that Dad is here today and gets to be on the auction block to see his beloved cows go to their new homes and make their new owners profitable and happy. This auction marks the culmination of 50+ years of Scott Hummel operating a cow herd that has seen upwards of 200 momma cows in the late 1980’s grazing on our hills in central Pennsylvania. This is the final dispersal sale for Hummel Land & Cattle and a retirement celebration for our parents. My brother, my sister, and I now have 8 grandchildren for our parents to spoil in retirement. The void left from the sale of the cows will be filled with athletic events, hunting expeditions, cattle shows (I’m still raising cattle and my oldest niece, Gretchen has the cattle loving gene in her DNA), and other events that we hope will keep our parents engaged and fulfilled for the rest of their lives! Thank you for your interest in this set of cows. Thank you for your support of Dad’s lifelong endeavor to raise great cattle! See you at the auction! Sincerely, Kyle Hummel, on behalf of the Hummel Family
December 18 will be a big day for the Hummel family and for those that take this chance to own Scott’s best cattle. I have known Scott and his family for more than 20 years and we have always done good business and, along the way, built a bank of great memories; I expect this venture to be just the same. I know some great success stories will originate from this auction. It can be a grim fact of life but time marches on whether we like it or not. Each day we all get a little older and, if we do it right, hopefully a little wiser. Well time has told Scott Hummel that it is time to retire from the hard work associated with raising better cattle, and wisdom tells us that we all need to pay attention and use some of his work to our advantage. We were working together to plan for this dispersal day a few years ago but fate moved that retirement date up by quite a bit when Scott and Karen experienced a pair of farm accidents this past spring; they’re not likely to tell you but they are lucky to be alive and joining us at the auction. Kyle Hummel has his own family, his own cattle, and his own farm to run but he stepped in huge to get these cattle ready for auction and future profits. As you know, running cows – especially better cows – takes so much time, energy, and focus. It is a full Hummel family effort to bring the herd to you, so sale day will be a sad one but also a happy day and time to get a little rest once it is done. Thank you to all that made it happen, most especially Scott’s other son, Jon that handled daily feeding and other chores. Please join us at the auction. The cattle are excellent, young, and ready to help. We will have some fun and build some memories and you will go home with some difference makers. Stay safe out there and call if we can help, Craig Reiter, Auction Manager 419.350.9159 / craig@primetimeagrimarketing.com

This good, young one is two-for-two with excellent production; she kicks off our Black Jade family that has been very good to us and many others in the business. Black Jade 607A was a high selling bred heifer that my son, Kyle Hummel, selected from Cardinal Cattle, IL, and used as a donor in his herd. We showed her one time to a Reserve Champion banner at the PA Farm Show. I purchased some embryos and got some excellent cows from them, some were just born this year. This is another thick, massive, high-maternal leader with lots of milk and fleshing ability. She has an excellent pair of daughters in the sale.

This is the bull we call Undefeated because his mother was never beaten when Spencer Goettemoeller showed her to wins like the 2018 National Western Prospect Show among others. He is a full brother to the Foor family’s steers that did so well a season ago after being among the top sellers at Goettemoeller Show Cattle, IN. This bull is gentle but very powerful with great bone, muscle, back, and rib shape. His calves have been moderate in size and they are good haired and some have had some color. We had just a handful in his first crop but sold nearly all of the steers. The heifers are in this catalog.

This was the second top seller of the 2021 OMAA Sale and he has developed into an awesome herd bull – both of these guys have. We use Shamokin on our heifers and it has worked well. His calves are small to moderate in size at birth and we love their hair and look. His pedigree is built around great cows like Shelby 302A and the famous Cabin Creek Sandy line from the Angus breed. He is the first calf from GEOT Sandy 616F, herself the Reserve Champion Bred & Owned Heifer of the 2019 Indiana State Fair for Spencer Goettemoeller. Check the videos, these bulls are studs!
