Livestock Kids By Catherine Bensman

Catherine (Fulton) Bensman was a farm kid, raised around livestock, grain, and produce farming near Troy, Ohio. Part of a large, livestock-showing extended family with deep roots in the business and Ohio 4-H, Catherine was also a college athlete and middle school teacher. The mother of one son, Adam, she was diagnosed with cancer in September of 2015 at the age of 42. Catherine passed away in May of 2018 but not before she could teach us many valuable lessons about life, love, illness, and more. Many of these thoughts are found in a blog she kept during her illness which can be read in its entirety at https://wp.me/p8ACC1-l2. With the permission of her family, we have elected to publish one of our favorite posts of Catherine’s here. daily about not spending enough time in the barn. He was a true livestock kid; I was more of a social participator. The stories that can be told from those years we all spent in 4-H are priceless. Our family (this includes my Sutherly cousins) found much success in the ring. There were many county fair champions, state fair contenders, and even a state fair grand champion steer shown by my cousin Dan. Yet this is not what we talk about most. It’s the family moments we had, friendships we created, and ornery shenanigans that are repeatedly rehashed. I mean, who wouldn’t want to remember when my parents and aunts/uncles would let my brother and male cousins stay at the state fair unsupervised under the viaduct? It makes perfect sense to leave a

Many kids find their niche on a sports team. Some find it with music. A handful thrive on anything academia. Scads enjoy hours with technology. My son prefers hanging out in the barn. Livestock can get his mind ticking and adrenaline rushing more than anything else. My husband and I both spent 10 years in 4-H. His family focused on hogs. My cousins, brother, and I raised our own hogs, too. It’s a fond memory of mine. We would farrow them each winter and have the big selection day each spring. The true colors of my dad and uncles came out many a time during those years. I still crack up at some of the irrational moments my uncle Bob displayed. I also threw my hand in at showing cattle for a brief stent. That ended when my brother badgered me 76

still jaw-dropping. Personally, we set a budget for Adam and he has to stick to it. He has to figure out how many animals he’s going to purchase within that budget, allot for transportation costs, and decide if he wants to try to keep any of them for future fall shows. I’m not knocking anyone that can afford what they pay. For some kids, it’s the only thing they participate in, so spending more is the same as a parent who pays big bucks for JO volleyball or traveling soccer. I just feel bad for the kids who really have a passion for animals but can’t afford to be involved. It’s not cheap. Not only do you have to buy the animals, but you also need the equipment, show supplies, show clothes, entry fees, feed, and travel expenses. To us, it’s well worth it – as long as we stick to our budget. I have some hair-brained thoughts on this crazy inflation. I’ll pass on sharing them. Obviously politics is present in every arena of life. It’s unfortunate. At the end of the day, hopefully the most deserving person wins. I’m kind of loving these shows that have all of the kids wear the same t-shirt. In a way it levels the playing field a bit. Maybe we should also remove the ear tags that identify the breeder. Truth be told, there have been times when my son has stood higher than I think he should in a class. On the flip side, at times I’ve felt he deserved better. It goes both ways. Kids are going to be disappointed when they lose. How they handle it is key. How the parents handle it is even more key. Personally, I want the kid to win that has the best animal, does the best job showing, and has put in the work himself. This may be the kid that has won year after year or a new kid on the block. Everyone wants to be a winner. Each of us, as parents, want to see our kids succeed

bunch of teenage boys there for nights on end, right? More stories just keep being revealed every year. Heck, they even snuck the powerful steer blower up to the grand champion chickens’ cage (these were not ours) to give them all a little “fluffing” and “de-feathering.” The memories are endless. The memories extend way beyond trophies and ribbons. These days we spend our time in the goat and sheep barns. Adam devotes most Saturdays and a few Sundays from MayAugust to showing at various shows. I call it his traveling “sport.” He’d rather go to the fair than on vacation. It’s just what he embraces. Since my cancer diagnosis 21 months ago, I’ve really taken a step back and observed the current state of 4-H and livestock families. It’s quite interesting to really watch and discuss. Much of it I love. Some of it I hate. There’s no doubt, showing livestock teaches kids hard work and responsibility (as long as they are the ones doing the work). These kids are feeding before school, working their animals hopefully daily, cleaning out pens, learning how to budget money, and washing/clipping when needed. Kids that are “all in” on their projects are building some great skills. I’ve seen multiple blogs floating around talking about the great parts of being a livestock kid. I’m sure I agree with everything that’s said. It’s just a good way of life. I think we would be dishonest if we didn’t discuss some of the flaws. One of the big ones is the rising cost to participate in 4-H, especially if you want to be competitive. I’m actually dumbfounded at how much money some of these animals bring at auction. Now I realize it’s not all “real” money, but it’s

Livestock Kids... continued from page 77 Families were intermingling and having a great time who are competitors at the county, state, and national shows. Folks were even chilling with the livestock in the barn. It made me smile. That’s what it’s about. Let’s get it right for the kids: honesty, integrity, hard-work, friendship, responsibility, respect. Memories of euchre, water fights, milkshakes, scrambles, camper shenanigans, late nights in the barn, and so much more should be talked about for decades to come. If a big win is earned, cherish that well-deserved memory, too. Even though I wasn’t as committed as I should have been when I was in 4-H, I love that my son has embraced being a livestock kid. He’s had a lot of success and a great deal of failure. I just hope he remembers his show shirt this Saturday because an unexpected trip to Meijer last Saturday almost ended badly. Lastly, I’m proud to be from Miami County. I’d venture to say it has some of the toughest livestock shows in the state – in every species. Keep it strong, Miami County. Let’s get more kids involved in this great way of life. I’m grateful to be well enough to go to Adam’s shows. If you’re a fair goer, I’ll see you there.

in the ring. I’m no different. I won’t lie, it’s on my bucket list to see my son get the handshake at a big show one day. I guess because I see his passion and feel his disappointment when he’s not doing as well as he’d like. But I’m a realist. This isn’t really important. What’s important is honoring the 4-H pledge. What’s important is being honest and staying humble. What’s important is shaking your friend’s hand with heartfelt sincerity when he beats you. What’s important is helping someone out even if he is the competition. What’s important is keeping the drive to do better on a day when you thought you were the best yet lost. What’s important is thanking all of the people that help you and volunteer. What’s important is cultivating lifelong friendships. What’s important is keeping life in perspective. I’m trying to convey that to my son; it’s a work in progress. I was at a graduation party tonight that happened to have a large number of livestock families, so I was silently taking note. I noticed two guys from my generation catching up on old times that were fierce rivals back in the day. Adam was playing cards and basketball with some livestock kids that are very successful in the ring and are tough competition. I was chatting with a mom from another county who has a child that’s a top notch showman in multiple species.

Mark Your with Lucas Wisnefski Our contributor for this issue is Lucas Wisnefski of Wyoming, IL. A respected junior cattle showman and breeder with a long list of show ring accomplishments, Lucas will be a junior at Oklahoma State University this fall where he will be a member of the livestock judging team. He is a graduate of Black Hawk East College where he was a leader on their judging team this past season, and his Stark/Henry County 4-H team won both the Illinois State title and the American Royal contest in 2016. Lucas won the Senior Sweepstakes Award at the 2018 AJSA North Central Region and was recently selected as the 2018 AJCA Herdsman of the Year; both awards are for combined excellence in Simmental and Chi cattle production, exhibition, marketing, and evaluation.

foundation that she brings to the table. Don’t get me wrong, 1 is undoubtedly more maternal in her body shape. She comes bolder in her fore-rib and center rib while being more correct in the set to her hock. Unfortunately, she is plainer about her head and neck, so I’ll leave the coarse shouldered one 3rd. Nevertheless, her practicality still marks the bottom 1-2. The higher performing 1 comes so much softer in her center rib and more correct in the set to her hock. Now, the all-black 2 certainly has future as she’s long bodied and square hipped. It’s just she’s the greenest bodied and more upright in her angles so the lower performing 2 is 4th.

I sort the Simmental heifers 4-3-12. I’m immediately impressed with 4’s tandem of structural correctness and balance. She’s big footed, clean jointed, and yet what makes her truly unique is her bold rib and maternal look from the side. I certainly can appreciate the long bodied baldy 3. She is so feminine about her head and neck, long hipped and is the class leader for foot and bone; however, it’s from her shoulder back she’s shallower bodied and coarser hocked so I’ll leave a good female second. Instinctively, 3 beats 1 in the middle as I like my cattle to still come with some look. It’s from the side she comes with so much look and femininity, and I couldn’t pass up on her added foot and 92

Plan to attend the 3rd annual Camp Cost- $75.00 per participant *family rates available Madison County Fairgrounds London, Ohio *Camping is available To register visit www.ohiocattle.org

Hosted By

Hands On • Showmanship • Leadership • Tailgate • Contests • Giveaways Anybody showing cattle is invited to attend!

Join in on the 2-day event for the opportunity to learn day-to-day care of your cattle project. Also, gain showmanship, clipping and fitting experience while learning about the cattle industry. Camp participants are encouraged to bring their calves along for “hands-on” experience and learning; however, it is not required for participants to bring a calf. If more than 1 participant per family attends, families can choose to bring 1 calf per kid or 1 calf per family. We will dive into cattle care, leadership, and also have a little fun with a Buckeye tailgate on Saturday! Bring the entire family! Breakout sessions will be offered specially tailored to age-specific groups. Meals will be provided.
