NOVEMBER 2020
REITER’S BLOCK Fall is here and it’s hard to beat. I know this to be true by the amazing colors last week when we were selling nearly 900 racehorses in Lexington (is there any place prettier than Fasig-Tipton in October?), and the glorious views when I crossed the Tennessee River to sell Brangus females for the Addison Ranch, and the combines running full tilt all the way to my little spot on the Maumee. Fall is hard to beat, that’s for sure. I hope you can take some time to enjoy it. Calf sales are humming along and, judging by how hard it is to find a trucker, they must be going well all over. Calf sales are always a great part of the fall. Watching young people make decisions about new projects during the heat of an auction is one of the best parts of the job; the emotions can run the full gamut. I remember when I sweated the details on my first show calf for $425, so it always gives me a little smile when the kid gets the calf they want for the money that works. I may sometimes disagree with their selection strategies, but it’s a
fresh start for them both and they’re confident in their path forward; it reminds me how great these projects really are, at all levels. If you take care of them, they’ll take care of you whether you know it or not. Cow sales are coming - the only season that is better than fall IMO - and there are some great opportunities looming. Some great breeders are bringing out unusually stout offerings and some top-shelf outfits are making big changes; their decisions will create some great opportunities and shifts in the power paradigm within our business. I am excited to go to many of these events and be a part of the action and decision making; some history will be made for many I am sure. I hope to see you there. Enjoy the fall. It’s great, but cow sale season is better! Buy. Sell. Be Happy.
