Things change, most times for the good. Well this is a summer of change alright; some of it good, some of it bad, some of it here to stay, and some of it temporary. Some of it has been alarming for sure, but some of it has served to remind us of what is most important and, in a lot of cases, given us better ways to spend our limited time. Change may not always seem better at the onset, and it’s true that it makes some folks quite uncomfortable but remember all of the good things that change has brought us. I mean who wants to go back to curry combs and wax anyway?

It’s been a mighty fine summer here really – COVID-adjusted of course. Awesome weather, great company, good health, strong crops of plants and animals, excellent business, and much to be excited about. I’ve hit the road recently and seen plenty of quality that we’re prepping to sell this fall and winter; all systems are functioning.

Unfortunately, I know the same cannot be said everywhere or for everyone. I’ve had some frightening phone calls with friends/customers in other parts of the country, and I’ve definitely been attending too many funerals lately. This past spring, my longtime friend, Jeff Kleman of Ottawa,

Ohio, passed away much too early leaving his great family and cows behind. And, this summer my lifelong friends, Alan and Matt Brinker of Frazeysburg and Luckey, Ohio, lost their mother and father in the same awful month. It’s true that I would not be in this business without my relationships with those guys and their families.

In fact, Alan and Matt groomed my very first champion steer in 1989 (somehow we won despite those boots of mine) and I then groomed Jeff ’s first one in 1995; small wins but they were very big to us and I remember them well to this day. They were among the many good times we had together.

Time is passing and changing, it always is. Be sure you spend it with ones you love doing what you love. Thanks for reading.
