1 Enhancing Remote Supervision with Bridge Site Monitoring System (BSMS) Desiging for impact in bridge helath, quility control and remote monitoring

Company: WorldBank | Department of Roads (DoR) Location: Kathmandu, Nepal Role: Design Consultant How can we improve civil works supervision? BSMS, enabling rapid bridge health data collection through Android and iOS apps. The system supports gathering data, geotagged media, and web-based monitoring and remote supervision for overall bridge sites in Nepal.

Enhancing Remote Supervision with BSMS Background

Nepal’s extensive road and bridge network, spanning 14,913 km, serves as a vital lifeline. However, remote supervision and quality monitoring pose challenges. The Department of Roads (DOR) oversees 80 highways and 2,534 bridges, necessitating efficient monitoring of construction and maintenance, emphasizing technical, social, environmental, occupational health and safety (OHS), and event-related factors.

Goals and Objectives

Address user experience issues with the existing Bridge Site Monitoring System (BSMS), operational since 2016. Focus on crafting a seamless experience for swift data collection within 20-25 minutes (in average) per bridge.

Deliverables

Mobile Application: • BSMS mobile app for rapid data collection using smartphones. • Seamless integration with the Bridge Management System (BMS) for precise bridge data and coordinates. • Utilizes real-time photos, videos, geo-tagging, and timestamps. • SMS alerts for urgent or critical events. Web Application: • Serves as a cornerstone for Bridge Branch leadership. • Tracks field visit frequency and quality of observations reported from the BSMS app. • Generates detailed monthly reports for a comprehensive overview. • Visual representation of field activities on the map.

Responsibility

User Research, Field Visit, Ideation, Wireframing, Visual Design Visual Design, and User Testing.

“ Challenges in tracking bridge visits across Nepal and engineer transfers between provinces highlight the need for an effective solution. The current lack of recorded data makes retrieval difficult, especially when personnel change. Implementing a system accessible from anywhere would prove invaluable, allowing seamless tracking of bridge progress, ensuring quality assurance, and facilitating remote supervision in challenging, day-today inaccessible bridge site.“ Naresh Shakya Director, QRDC Department of Roads (DoR)
