Enhancing Remote Supervision with Bridge Site Monitoring System (BSMS)

Designing for impact in bridge health, quality control and remote monitoring

Company: World Bank | Department of Roads (DoR)

Location: Kathmandu, Nepal

Role: Design Consultant

How can we improve civil works supervision? BSMS, makes it possible to acquire rapid bridge health data via Android and iOS apps. For all bridge sites in Nepal, the system facilitates data collection, geotagged media, web-based monitoring, and remote supervision.

1

Enhancing Remote Supervision with BSMS

Background

Nepal’s extensive road and bridge network, spanning 14,913 km, serves as a vital lifeline. However, remote supervision and quality monitoring pose challenges.

With 2,534 bridges and 80 highways under its jurisdiction, the Department of Roads (DOR) must effectively manage construction and maintenance, placing a special emphasis on technical, social, environmental, occupational health and safety (OHS), and event-related concerns.

Goals and Objectives

Address user experience issues with the existing Bridge Site Monitoring System (BSMS), operational since 2016.

Focus on crafting a seamless experience for swift data collection within 20-25 minutes (in average) per bridge.

Deliverables

Mobile Application:

• BSMS mobile app for rapid data collection using smartphones.

• Seamless integration with the Bridge Management System (BMS) for precise bridge data and coordinates.

• Utilizes real-time photos, videos, geo-tagging, and timestamps.

• SMS alerts for urgent or critical events.

Web Application:

• Serves as a cornerstone for Bridge Branch leadership.

• Tracks field visit frequency and quality of observations reported from the BSMS app.

• Generates detailed monthly reports for a comprehensive overview.

• Visual representation of field activities on the map.

Responsibility

User Research, Field Visit, Ideation, Wireframing, Visual Design, and User Testing.

“ Challenges in tracking bridge visits across Nepal and engineer transfers between provinces highlight the need for an effective solution.

The current lack of recorded data makes retrieval difficult, especially when personnel change. Implementing a system accessible from anywhere would prove invaluable, allowing seamless tracking of bridge progress, ensuring quality assurance, and facilitating remote supervision in challenging, day-today inaccessible bridge site.“

A Redesign Journey for Kings College Website

Better . Simplier . Connected

Company: Kings College Nepal

Location: Kathmandu, Nepal

Role: Design Consultant

The university website serves as the initial touch-point for both students and parents exploring educational options; however, it is a section that is often overlooked.

To address this, Kings College Nepal initiated a redesign of their website, aiming to actively assist students in acquiring essential information for well-informed academic decisions.

3

A Redesign Journey for Kings College Website

Background

In the digital age, a university’s online presence is often the first point of contact for prospective students. A well-designed website not only serves as a gateway to information but also reflects the institution’s commitment to excellence.

Acknowledging the significance of a user-friendly interface, Kings College Nepal, with its esteemed academic legacy, understands the necessity of streamlining its current website to provide essential and informative details, catering to the needs of potential students, partners, and educators.

Goals and Objectives

The primary goals of the redesign were to revolutionize navigation, streamline program information, and provide a sense of what Life at King’s College is like.

Initial observations emphasized the need for a seamless, intuitive design, comprehensive program details, and an immersive experience that goes beyond academics. It also focused on improving the admission process for efficiency and optimization.

Deliverables

Re-design website with follow major changes:

Clean and Meaningful Navigation:

• Revamped website navigation and menu structure for a seamless and meaningful experience.

Program Information Hub:

• Revamped program pages provide comprehensive curriculum outlines, faculty profiles, and a dedicated section spotlighting student projects, connecting academic theory with real-world applications.

Book an Appointment with Kings:

• Novel feature allowing direct booking of appointments with acadamic councelors.

Showcasing Events:

• Explore the dynamic events section featuring a real-time calendar, offering a blend of educational symposiums and lively cultural festivals.

Responsibility

User Research, Ideation, Wireframing, User Testing, and Visual Design.

... it all started with core value

Insights from Reserach

“As a prospective BBA student, I initially struggled to choose a program due to the overwhelming process of finding information on the current website.

While there is a lot of information, it lacks the depth needed for meaningful insights.

A redesigned website with readily available crucial details would significantly simplify decision-making and reduce the need for excessive searching.“

“As an admission counselor, understanding prospective students’ needs can take up valuable time during consultations, often around 20 minutes.

Gaining insights into their needs beforehand would streamline the process, enabling me to prepare in advance and enhance the efficiency of counseling sessions.”
