We

are excited to be together tonight to support the Princeton Public Library. Beyond Words 2022 begins with a talk from David Wondrich, a James Beard Award-winning author, who will share with us his thoughts on the near death, and rebirth, of the American cocktail. During Dr. Wondrich’s talk, we invite you to partake in the mocktail and cocktail tasting flight at your seat, which highlights the traditional building blocks of some cocktail classics. Afterward, we look forward to sharing a delicious pasture-to-table meal together, as we celebrate all that the library means to our community.

The newly-merged Friends and Foundation remains committed to cultivating curiosity in our community and raising money to support the Princeton Public Library through stewardship of the library’s endowment, the sale of used books and events like Beyond Words and our Book Lovers Luncheon. Tonight we thank our inaugural board for their continued commitment, the library’s Executive Director Jennifer Podolsky, and our amazing library staff, who continue to strive for excellence in all that they do. Kudos to them for being recognized, for the sixth consecutive year, as a Five-Star Library, the highest national ranking by Library Journal Magazine!

As we celebrate together at this year’s Beyond Words, we are reminded of the central role the library plays in keeping our Princeton community connected, informed, and entertained. How fortunate we are to have the library as a centerpiece of our town, serving as our gathering place, offering a safe space for our children to learn, and welcoming neighbors and newcomers with a warm sense of belonging. All of this is possible because of the continued support from you, our generous and loyal donors. We are grateful to Princeton Property Partners, our Lead Sponsor, and Reed Smith LLP, our Silver Sponsor, along with all of our other sponsors and corporate partners, for their belief in the mission of the Friends and Foundation. And so tonight, we raise a toast to all of you for joining us in support, and celebration, of the Princeton Public Library.

Cheers!

Wondrich is widely hailed as one of the world’s foremost authorities on the history of the cocktail—“the head boy of booze history,” as the Spectator recently put it—and one of the founders of the modern craft cocktail movement. Dr. Wondrich (he has a PhD in Comparative Literature from New York University) is the author of countless newspaper and magazine articles (most significantly, the almost 17 years’ worth he wrote as Esquire’s Drinks Correspondent).

He is the Editor in Chief of the “Oxford Companion to Spirits and Cocktails,” winner of the American Library Association’s 2022 Dartmouth Medal for best reference book published in the preceding year, and the author of five books, including the hugely influential “Imbibe!,” the first cocktail book to win a James Beard award (2007; an expanded and thoroughly revised edition was published in April, 2015), and “Punch,” which came out in late 2010 to broad acclaim and did much to spark the current boom in punch-making.

As a consultant, he has been involved in the creation of several spirits that are found on the backbars of practically every craft cocktail bar on the planet, including Ransom Old Tom gin and the multiple award-winning Plantation Stiggins’ Fancy Pineapple Rum. He is a founding partner in Beverage Alcohol Resource, America’s leading advanced training program for bartenders and other spirits professionals, and a frequent guest lecturer at venues such as the Smithsonian Institute, the Museum of the City of New York and fine bars on five continents and ships at sea.

His writing, lecturing, podcasting and mentoring have earned him a record eight Tales of the Cocktail Spirit Awards and an IACP Trailblazer Award; in 2019, he came in at number three in Drinks International’s inaugural annual list of the 100 most-influential people in the bar world, based on a poll of top industry professionals, and has placed in the top five in two of the three lists since. He is a longtime resident of Brooklyn, New York.

AUCTION RULES

1. Bidding on silent auction items begins at 5 p.m. and ends promptly at 7:30 p.m. There will be periodic warning announcements beginning 15 minutes before the official closing. We will not be able to accept bids after 7:30 p.m. Checkout will be available after 8:30 p.m.

2. Bid sheets for all silent auction items will be attached to or affixed as close as possible to items on display. Bidders need to be certain the number on the item matches the number on the bid sheet.

3. To place a bid, the bidder must legibly write their full name, phone number, email address, and bid amount in the appropriate spot on the next available line of the bid sheet. If a name is crossed out, that bid will be considered null.

4. Please observe the bidding minimums and bid increments noted on the bid sheets. The opening bid on each item is the minimum price listed. Any bids not adhering to this format will be declared invalid and voided by an authorized Auction Staff Person.

5. At the close of the silent auction, all bid sheets will be collected and winners will be determined by an Auction Official. This process takes about an hour — please be patient. In the event of a dispute, the Auction Committee will have sole and final discretion to determine the winning bidder.

6. The list of winners will be posted at the silent auction area at approximately 8:30 p.m. A Checkout Center will be open from approximately 8:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Auction items may be paid for in full by check (made out to “F&FPPL”) or credit card.

7. If the highest bidder is not present at the auction’s closing, they will be notified in the week following the auction event and may coordinate payment and pick up of the purchase(s) with an Auction Committee Member. The Friends and Foundation of Princeton Public Library will not incur any shipping and delivery fees on behalf of a buyer.

CONDITIONS OF SALE

1. All sales are final. There will be no refunds, adjustments or exchanges on items. Please read the specifications and limitations in the lot description carefully.

2. By their purchase, the buyer waives any claims for liability against the Friends and Foundation of Princeton Public Library and/or donors of the property or services.

3. Unless otherwise specified, all items and services must be used by Nov. 1, 2023. Unless otherwise specified, dates and times are to be arranged through mutual convenience of the donor and the buyer.

4. The Friends and Foundation of Princeton Public Library warrants neither the quality nor the value of items and services auctioned. All items are sold “as is” and “with no faults.” No risk, liability or responsibility is assumed for the authenticity of the authorship of any property in the program.

5. IRS regulations specify that the Friends and Foundation of Princeton Public Library must inform the buyer that only the amount paid for an item over the stated market value is tax deductible. Dollar values are good faith estimates of equivalent items and their fair market values.

6. Unless specifically stated otherwise, no ground transportation is included in any package.

7. Restaurant gift certificates do not include alcohol, tax or gratuity unless otherwise stated.
