Emerson String Quartet

Works by Haydn, Beethoven and Ravel – After 35 years of incomparable artistry with cellist David Finckel, the Emerson Quartet has drafted a “young phenom”—44-year-old superstar cellist Paul Watkins. This will be the Emerson’s first appearance in Princeton with Watkins.

Over the course of two evenings, Professor Michael Wood, Emeritus Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Princeton University, will explore the central themes of Roth’s novella Everyman, bringing his own perspective and rich experience to the class discussion. On the second evening, Philip Roth will join the discussion via Skype. Class participants are invited to attend the accompanying performance on September 19 (see details below) when excerpts of the book will be read by actress Meryl Streep and paired with works played by the Takács String Quartet. Readings from Philip Roth’s novella Everyman interspersed with works for string quartet by Arvo Pärt and Schubert – These extraordinary artists come together to perform a program of words and music featuring readings from the great American writer Philip Roth’s novella Everyman, interspersed with works for string quartet including Franz Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, as well as music by Arvo Pärt. This unique collaboration between some of the most brilliant, creative and interpretive artists of our time is happening only in Princeton.

Mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile returns to Princeton, this year with bassist Edgar Meyer. No musician has done more to bridge the 19th century’s central European classical music tradition with the sounds of Appalachia today than Edgar Meyer. These two MacArthur Geniuses will cross traditional boundaries in a diverse program of largely original music.

For over a decade, Sō Percussion has redefined the modern percussion ensemble as a flexible, omnivorous entity, pushing its voice to the forefront of American musical culture. Praised by The New Yorker for their “exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor and bedlam,” Sō’s adventurous spirit is written into the DNA passed down from composers like John Cage and Steve Reich, as well as from pioneering ensembles like the Kronos Quartet and Nexus Percussion.
