Rotary Youth Exchange The Experience of a Lifetime
Each year approximately 7,000 students throughout the world, ages 15 to 19, go abroad under the auspices of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. This program allows the student to study for a year in a high school in another country, enabling them to learn a new language and culture. Each district in Rotary (we are District 7890) seeks applicants for this program. These applicants are screened first by a local club, then by a District Youth Exchange Committee. If he/she is a viable candidate, an orientation is given and the student is sent the following school year. The cost to each family is nominal compared to other exchange programs. There is a small processing fee, an insurance fee, and the airplane fare. The parents of the outbound student are expected to host a student from another country, and their son or daughter stays in a home of a family overseas. Each host home and student is monitored by Rotary. This year we hosted Charlotte Durade from France.

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS
Each year sophomores are selected from Plainfield High School and sponsored by our Rotary Club to attend a day of activities at Springfield College, MA, with over a hundred other students from other Rotary Clubs. The program is designed to enhance personal development, leadership skills and good citizenship. The training includes challenging activities and at the end of the day each group selects a person that best exemplifies these attributes. From these select students, several are chosen to attend a week long, all expenses paid, program in Wisconsin the following year. For more information call Rocky Wagner at 860-861-1892.
INTERACT
Interact is a Rotary sponsored service club for young adults ages 13-18. The objective is to provide opportunities for young people to work together in a world fellowship dedicated to service and international understanding. About 200,000 young people throughout the world are involved in Interact. The Rotary Club of Plainfield has an active Interact Club. Among their many projects, they have bought a goat for a family in Haiti, hosted a weekend for all the foreign exchange students in District 7890, volunteered for literacy events such as “Stories in the Park” and supported the People In Need Project and Wonderland Park Project. The Interact Club also sponsors an annual charity dodgeball tournament. Most recently, our Interact Club was the first to join the Global Interact Club Alliance. We are always looking for new members; if you’re interested in our Interact Club call Bill or MaryBeth Hall at 860-608-0500 for more information. 5

Miss Plainfield Rotary Pageant A Bit of History The Miss Plainfield Rotary Pageant had its beginning in 1954 at the Plainfield Industrial Mercantile Agricultural Exhibition (PIMA). Thus, the pageant has been known to the community as the PIMA Pageant. During this exhibition/fundraiser, products of many local businesses and industries were showcased. Part of the exhibition was a beauty pageant; contestants were selected by the public through a system of ballots. As time, technology and ever-changing society evolved, the exhibits were replaced by talent reviews. Eventually, the pageant, as it is today emerged. The annual Miss Plainfield Rotary Pageant is held every year in the spring. The Pageant includes a costume competition and an evening gown presentation. The costume competition is based on a theme selected each year by the pageant’s director; this year the theme is “The Oscars.” Prior to the Pageant, a tea is held for the contestants by the Pageant Committee. During the tea, contestants are awarded points for characteristics such as poise, appearance and personality by the three judges present. And, on the night of the Pageant, points are awarded for the costume and evening gown presentations. During intermission, we offer concession snacks which are donated by local individuals and businesses. All proceeds from the Pageant are used to fund scholarships which are awarded by The Rotary Club of Plainfield. Scholarships are given to eligible seniors who reside in Plainfield, Canterbury or Sterling.
