Dear Fellow Traveler, Explore the landscapes, avors and fan favorites of Pennsylvania in this year’s Vacation Guide and you will discover what I have always known about my home — Pennsylvania is an experience unmatched by any other state. Pennsylvania is known for its incredible history — from the battleď€ elds of Gettysburg to Philadelphia’s pivotal role in shaping our nation’s independence. You can truly get away from it all in the outdoor beauty of the Pennsylvania Wilds, Pocono Mountains and Laurel Highlands. You’ll ď€ nd endless local charm from the Lincoln Highway to Rt. 6, and CondĂŠ Nast Traveler just named Pittsburgh one of its “Top 15 Places to Go in 2015.â€? Did you know Pennsylvania was the state that gave America its ď€ rst daily newspaper, its ď€ rst stock exchange, its ď€ rst commercial oil well, its ď€ rst computer and its ď€ rst art museum? While we’re proud of our ď€ rsts, we’re not done yet. We continue to make history with new experiences for you to uncover. As a four-season destination, the landscape and colors of Pennsylvania are always changing. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the deep reds and golds of the fall scenery and the crisp winter white of fresh powder at our 19 ski resorts. The deep blue waterways and the lush green forests in PA’s 120 state parks are among Pennsylvania’s abundant natural resources that keep us all coming back for more. Sometimes the best way to experience Pennsylvania is bite by bite, as you’ll read in our “State on a Plateâ€? feature. You may not know that my home county of York is affectionately known as the “Snack Food Capital of the World,â€? with more than 20 factory tours to sample. What I love about our diverse food scene is there’s something for every palate — from local farmers markets and Pennsylvania Dutch classics to celebrity chefs and microbreweries popping up throughout the commonwealth. But don’t take my word for it — Travel + Leisure just declared Philadelphia “America’s Next Great Food City.â€? Finally, Pennsylvania’s passion for sports runs deep with professional leagues in every major sport. Whether you’re a baseball fan like me or a racing fan, Pennsylvania offers game-changing experiences for sports enthusiasts from our eight minor league ball parks to the Pocono Raceway. So put on your favorite team colors and explore the Pennsylvania sports scene. Ready to see it for yourself? I invite you to enjoy the Pennsylvania I am constantly rediscovering. Happy Travels!

Governor Tom Wolf

Pennsylvania offers game-changing experiences for sports enthusiasts.

10 visitPA.com

The Keystone State scores big with its sports teams and athletic adventures. With professional leagues in every major sport, Pennsylvania’s the best in the field at attracting fans to its basketball arenas, football and soccer stadiums, hockey rinks and baseball parks. And the love of sport extends far beyond heavy-hitting professional teams. Cheer for college powerhouses and home-team minor leagues, rev up your energy at a superspeedway, congratulate mom at the end of her marathon, applaud rowers from the grandstand or relive unforgettable sporting moments in Pennsylvania history. PROFESSIONAL SPORTS Cross state lines into Pennsylvania from any direction and you won’t miss superfans sporting gear from one of the state’s nine professional teams: In Philadelphia, you’ve got the 76ers, Phillies, Eagles, Flyers and Union soccer. In Pittsburgh, there’s the Pirates, Penguins (who were recently named by Forbes magazine as having the NHL’s best fans — again), Riverhounds and Steel-

ers. Several of these pro teams have brought home championships. But there’s more to sports than just winning the game; it’s about determination and drive — and practice! Steelers fans can don black and gold and head to Saint Vincent College in the Laurel Highlands for the Steelers Annual Summer Training Camp, a chance to watch your favorite players push themselves each July and August. You can also see the Philadelphia Eagles prep for the upcoming season on their former home turf at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus. MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Almost every Major League Baseball player was groomed in the minor leagues, so there’s no better way to see the development of young players than to attend a minor league game, where lower ticket and concession prices contribute to a family atmosphere. • A ltoona Curve: A team named for the nearby engineering marvel — and not the spin on the pitch (Pittsburgh Pirate AA affiliate).

• W illiamsport Crosscutters: Named for the city’s “Lumber Capital of the World” heritage (Phillies affiliate in the shortseason New York-Penn League).

• H arrisburg Senators: The Senators hit homeruns on City Island, where baseball has been played since the late 19th century (Washington Nationals AA affiliate).

Pittsburgh is also home to the Passion, a women’s football team; the Power, an arena football team; and the Harlequins, a rugby team originally formed by University of Pittsburgh law students.

• L ancaster Barnstormers: A reference to both Lancaster’s agricultural heritage and a traveling sports team (unaffiliated). • L ehigh Valley IronPigs: Known for their PorkCenter social media headquarters, hands-free gaming system at urinals and sellout crowds (Philadelphia Phillies AAA affiliate). • R eading Fightin Phils: Reading’s professional baseball roots earned it the nickname “Baseballtown” (Philadelphia Phillies AA affiliate). • Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders: They’ve got a play area for kids in center field (New York Yankees AAA affiliate).

DIVISION I COLLEGE SPORTS Stand among a wall of 106,000 people at a whiteout game at Penn State or watch to make sure St. Joe’s hawk mascot is always flapping its wings, and enjoy the sporting traditions of Pennsylvania’s many colleges and universities, including the Hawks and Bucknell Bison, Drexel Dragons, Duquesne Dukes, La Salle Explorers, Lafayette Leopards, Lehigh Mountain Hawks, Penn Quakers, Penn State Nittany Lions, Pittsburgh Panthers, Saint Francis Red Flash, Temple Owls and Villanova Wildcats.

LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES Just like the big leagues, the Little League World Series celebrated its 75th anniversary last year in Williamsport. The world’s largest name in youth sports started by accident, when Carl E. Stotz lost his balance while tossing fly balls with his nephews. While nursing his injury, he conjured up the idea for his nephews to play a scaled-down version of the American pastime. What started as three teams grew to more than 7,000 teams worldwide in 2014 — see the spectacle for yourself Aug. 20–30, 2015. The Pittsburgh-based PONY League World Series, a baseball and softball program for ages 4 to 19, also unites junior athletes from all over the world Aug. 7–12, 2015. AUTO RACING Fans of fast can make tracks around any one of Pennsylvania’s speedways: • P ocono Raceway: You know what fans say about “Any Given Sunday.” Well, at Pocono Raceway, anything can

happen when all 43 NASCAR teams converge to “Start Their Engines” and race for the checkered flag. This summer, Dale Jr. returns after completing a historic Pocono sweep in 2014. Be here to see if he can make it three in a row at Pocono. • L ernerville Speedway: Stock cars burn rubber from March to October at this Pittsburgh-area raceway operated by former champion Don Martin. • M aple Grove Raceway: Local drag racers love this quarter-mile dragstrip just outside of Reading. Stroll through the pits, and if you are lucky, meet the drivers and take pictures. • W illiams Grove Speedway: Champions like Mario Andretti have strapped themselves into an open cockpit car and sped around the half-mile semi-banked clay oval southwest of Harrisburg. sports complex hosts the National Field Hockey Club Championship for the most elite athletes in the country, including top collegiate players, and is the training center of the U.S. Olympic Women’s Field Hockey Team. HORSE RACING Pennsylvania boasts one of the best racing programs in the country, and that’s due in part to the state’s rich equine history. Get your giddy-up at one of these tracks: • H arrah’s Philadelphia: It’s off to the races as majestic thoroughbreds stampede around a first-of-its-kind turn that extends over the Delaware River. • T he Meadows Racetrack Casino: Watch and wager at this western PA racetrack with its grandstand, VIP suites, simulcast area and even an allages bowling center. • M ohegan Sun at Pocono Downs: It’s down-to-the-wire action at this live harness-racing track with free admission and free parking.

• P arx Casino: Smarty Jones brought fame to this Bucks County racetrack, home to the Pennsylvania Derby. • P enn National Race Course: Most tracks shut down in winter, but you can line your purse at this Hershey-area course year-round. • P resque Isle Downs & Casino: Pure adrenaline will course through your veins as you watch the ponies race at this Erie track. POLO CLUBS Tailgaters come out in style to watch weekly matches, stomp the divots and enjoy a lively social scene. • B randywine Polo Club: Spectators may be just as impressed by the matches as they are with Chester County’s elite equestrian scene. May–Sept. • D arlington Polo Club: Touted as a mix of hometown sport and backyard festival, the family will enjoy an evening at the first lighted field in the U.S. outside Pittsburgh. May–Sept. • L ancaster Polo Club: Beautiful horses pair with gorgeous countryside as you sit carside on a Sunday afternoon. June–Oct. • T inicum Polo Club: Pull your car up to the Bucks County field, bring out a lawn chair and sit back — until it’s time for the divot stomping. May–Oct. RACES FOR THE REST OF US Less interested in being a spectator and more of an on-the-go type with a high capacity for aerobic work? Devote your strength to one of these races: • River Town Race Series: This crossdiscipline race through Montour County offers a lengthy schedule of humdinger trail runs, endurance runs, a triathlon and a cycling race. STATE on a

A Taste of Pennsylvania

By Erica Levi Zelinger

Farm-fresh ingredients — tomatoes grown on the roof of a restaurant, products procured in their prime, fundamentals of a meal carted in from local farmers and foragers — are plated up in Pennsylvania for appetizers, entrées and desserts, and mixed in and served up in snacks, beer, wine and spirits across the state.

The Ingredients The farm-to-fork trend starts with ingredients found on the farm or purchased at farmers’ markets and roadside stands across the state. This page from top: ©Bricco; Dinette Garden ©Laura Petrilla; Honeycomb ©iStock/kcrep; ©Savor Gettysburg Food Tours

Farms • E at dinner in the field with the cast of Great American Country’s “Farm Kings” at Butler’s Freedom Farms, or buy fruit, produce and meats from their markets.

• L ansdale’s Merrymead Farm has the scoop on working dairy farms: Their Holsteins supply the milk for 30-plus hand-dipped ice cream flavors.

• P ick your own juicy sandwich topper at Myers Pickle Farm in Armstrong County.

• M ake it your beeswax to try a hands-on beekeeping workshop at Summer Smiles Honey Farm in Stoystown.

• C alm down with a visit to Peace Valley Lavender Farm in Bucks County. Bring it home in bath, culinary, dried floral or sachet form. • T ake an intensive weekend seminar on wild, edible and medicinal plants at Quiet Creek Herb Farm in Brookville.

• S tutzman U-Pick Farms in Penn Run guarantees your blueberry muffins, cobblers and pies will be fresh and tasty.

• T he aroma of hardwood-smoked ham at West Shore Farmers Market’s S. Clyde Weaver in Lemoyne lures visitors in, and the fresh-baked pies keep them coming back. • L ancaster’s Central Market has all the Amish staples: scrapple, headcheese, chowchow and butter pickles.

If you can fit in another morsel, stop over for a snack at one of these favorite roadside stands; they’ll tide you over until your next course. • F ollow your snout to a pulled-pork sandwich at Andy’s Fatback BBQ in Kittanning. • R oadside stands in Pennsylvania Dutch Country have ample snacks to tempt you: whoopie pies, apple dumplings and shoofly pie, for starters. • C hris of Chris’ BBQ near Wyalusing brings a little Texas to Pennsylvania with his tasty ribs.

Farmers’ Markets • G rowers and vendors gather in York to sell their produce and goods; they also offer courses to teach the public on the importance of locally grown ingredients. The delicious fruits and veggies at Dennis Fitz Produce are the best form of advertising for Central Market’s local flavors. So is the freshly squeezed juice from Glick’s Produce at Glen Rock’s Markets at Shrewsbury. At Flinchbaugh’s Orchard & Farm Market, enroll the kids in Little Sprouts hands-on lessons; and at Brown’s Orchards & Farm Market, learn step-by-step how to create a container garden.

Snacks There’s even a local component to Pennsylvania’s snacks.

• S nack on a buttery pretzel rolled by the Amish at Miller’s Twist at Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia or the fresh-baked coconut chocolate chip biscotti from Enrico Biscotti Co. in Pittsburgh’s Strip District. • T aste your way through York County, where sweet and salty eats like soft pretzels, potato chips and chocolate make it easy to love this Snack Capital of the World.

Drink Menu PA Wine Indulge us. You can intensify the joy of this made-up tasting menu with a wine pairing. Consult the vintners themselves at a tour along one of Pennsylvania’s wine trails, and discover how to match lamb chops with the firm tannins of a cabernet or a pinot grigio with a citrusy ceviche. Pennsylvania’s varied climates produce a large range of wines: from the cooler mountainous climates that supply vinifera grape varieties to award-winning wines made with Chambourcin, Lehigh Valley’s signature grape, the fertile soil in some regions produce the gamut from dry table wine to sweet and sparkling. And in northwest PA, the lake effect creates the perfect terroir for producing ice and fruit wines as well as specialty wines like brandies and ports. Learn about the state’s 12 wine trails: visitPA/WineTrails.

Pennsylvania Beer & Spirits The earthy ingredients in beer make it a worthy partner with our imaginary menu as well. And tour any one of Pennsylvania’s numerous breweries or distilleries to try a porter with your barbecue, a hops with your hamburger or an oak-aged scotch with your chocolate soufflé. It’s not just the food that seals a great culinary experience. Take in the sights, sounds and smells of these dining encounters: • E very three months, takeout joint Conflict Kitchen in Pittsburgh rotates its cuisine to only serve up dishes from countries with which the U.S. is in conflict. Its lunch-hour discussions, performances and events help to engage the public — and what better way to do that than with food? • E at your face off at The Spa at The Hotel Hershey with an edible chocolate facial. But on the altar of this former place of worship sits the large brewing kettles of the casual gastropub Church Brew Works. • I f you don’t make it past the pool table at Ligonier’s Joe’s Bar, the barebones dive may not impress. But head straight back to a two-story glass-encased taxidermy treasure trove and take in the giraffe, elephant’s head, rhino, tigers, lions and costumed squirrels. • V enture down an alley and up a steep flight of stairs to The Horse Inn, a converted hayloft above a stable-turned-Prohibitionera speakeasy-turned restaurant in Lancaster. Dine — amid the horse stalls and equine accessories — on the popular tenderloin tips on toast. And with that, we’ll put a fork in it. The American Bantam Car Co. was the only U.S. company to meet the Army’s need for a general purpose vehicle during WWII. Bantam built a prototype and more than 2,500 vehicles whose design still influences Jeep models made today. The Jeep is celebrated at the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival in Butler where 2,000+ Jeeps enjoy off-and-on road trail rides, obstacle courses, competitions, street party and exhibits. 3-Day Itinerary

Begin with breakfast at Pamela’s Diner (pamelasdiner.com) — President Obama liked the pancakes so much he invited Pamela to the White House! Take some time to wander through the markets on Penn Avenue and Smallman Street. Don’t miss Enrico’s Biscotti (enricobiscotti.com) or the Pennsylvania Macaroni Company (pennmac.com), where you can bottle your own imported olive oil. Pack pickles like historic factory workers in the Heinz History Center (heinzhistorycenter.org) and grab dinner in one of many fantastic restaurants. If you still have the energy, there’s great nightlife.

The Golden Triangle is best explored on two wheels, so either rent a bike (bikepittsburgh.com) or book a Segway tour (seg wayinparadise.com) to soak in the bridges and historic buildings. Dip a toe in the fountain at Point Park (dcnr.state.pa.us) en route to lunch in Market Square (downtownpittsburgh.com), where there’s always something happening, from massive public water-balloon fights to live music. You’re close by the cultural district (trustarts.org) if you care to see a show. Prefer visual art? A quick jaunt across the Andy Warhol Bridge guides you to the museum of his works (warhol.org).

Find a serene bench at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens (phipps.conservatory.org). Check out their “living building” or just admire the bonsai collection. Their award-winning café offers organic, local cuisine — so local much of the produce is grown on site. After lunch, head across the bridge to the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History (carnegiemuseums.org) to dig the dinosaur exhibit. Study your heritage in the Cathedral of Learning’s Nationality Rooms (nationalityrooms.pitt. edu) while you wait for a dinner table at nearby Legume Bistro (legumebistro.com). Save room for the chocolate truffle cake!

3-Day Itinerary

MORNING: Start your journey of the Brandywine Valley at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge (fws.gov/refuge/john_heinz), a hidden treasure of lush flora and native fauna surrounded by five million people. AFTERNOON: See hundreds of artifacts, uniforms and living history replicas from World War I through the Vietnam War at the PA Veterans Museum and Trolley Ride (paveteransmuseum. org) through downtown Media. For lunch, consider Margaret Kuo’s Peking Restaurant (margaretkuos. net) at the Granite Run Mall. EVENING: Book tickets for the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center (udpac.org), People’s Light and Theatre Company (peopleslight.org) or Hedgegrow Theatre (hedgerowtheatre.org). Or take in some music at Rose Tree Park (co.delaware.pa.us) with 45 nights of live shows in the summer. Grab dinner in downtown Media at the popular Iron Hill Brewery (ironhillbrewery. com), a local chain with homegrown brews. Then stay the night at Magnolia House B&B (magnoliahousehotel.com), Longfellow House B&B (thelong fellowhouse.com) or Purcell Darrel House B&B (purcell darrellhouse.com), all in Swarthmore.

MORNING: Pick your own fruit and vegetables at Linvilla Orchards (linvilla.com), and say “hi” to the farm animals. Or choose Tyler Arboretum (tylerarboretum. org), a unique hiking spot with cool exhibits and activities for children. In winter, lace up your skates and visit IceWorks (iceworks.net), with four skating rinks, game rooms, restaurants and hockey tournaments. AFTERNOON: Chow down at Jimmy John’s Pipin’ Hot Sandwich Shop (jimmyjohns1940.com), where they sell 90,000 hot dogs each year. Plus, the kids will love the cool electrical train display (reservations suggested). Next, head to Nottingham for a free tour of Herr’s Snack Factory (herrs. com). Sample chips hot off the conveyor belt and then buy “oops” samples in the gift shop. EVENING: Stroll Olde Ridge Village (olderidgevillage.com), a quaint village of specialty stores for beading, scrapbooking, knitting, crocheting, quilting, beer and winemaking. Dine at Big Fork Restaurant or, just a mile down the road, at Pecatores Italian Restaurant (pescatoresrestaurant.com) and stay the night at Sweetwater Farm in Glen Mills with the addition of Grace Winery (gracewinery. com), a five-acre estate vineyard off the Quaker farmhouse.

MORNING: Start the day off on the Brandywine Battlefield (ushistory.org), the site of one of the fiercest battles of the Revolutionary War. Here, you can walk the fields where thousands of troops fought and died. Across the street, also visit Washington’s Headquarters. AFTERNOON: Thinking about one last meal before leaving town? Then proceed to Hank’s Place (hanks-place.net). While known for their blueberry pancakes, the homestyle restaurant proudly serves up fresh-baked goods and delicious salads, sandwiches, burgers and Italian specialties. Afterward, check out the American Helicopter Museum (americanhelicopter.museum), one of few like it in the country. See historic rotary-wing aircraft, learn about aerodynamics, and on select days, you can take a short helicopter ride. Speaking of rides, there’s no better way to make a lasting memory of the Brandywine Valley then booking a hot-air balloon ride over the region. The U.S. Hot Air Balloon Team (ushotairballoon.com) offers an ascent over Wyeth country. View beautiful horse farms, lakes and ponds — even the skylines of Philadelphia, West Chester, Exton, Pottstown, Downingtown and Reading on a clear day.

Budget Travel recently named Lititz “America’s Coolest Small Town” because it “wears its colonial-era heritage on its sleeve, but that doesn’t mean it forgoes contemporary pleasures.” And this is true for much of the Dutch Country Roads Region — steeped in Civil War, German and Pennsylvania Dutch history, a time capsule dotted with antique shops and quaint B&Bs. Each town is diverse in its heritage, but embraces its contemporary assets: world-class entertainment, arts and culture, fine dining, top-notch sporting events and five-star accommodations.
