Coastal waste is a mixture of rubbish and debris that come from varies of sources which ending up being washed up to coastline – it became a type of spatial object that began to largely occupy the coastal edges of Hong Kong. The existence of coastal waste has been embedded into the local ecology and its repelling properties began to change the living pattern of different species and human. Once these locations reach its critical capacity, permanent and harmful impacts would be brought to the ecosystem and human. Without effective solution or cleanup operation to match the accelerating phenomenon of growing coastal waste, these contaminated areas became the Landfill by default – a new challenging living and building condition. This thesis is dedicated to investigate coastal waste in the ecology of the coastline of Hong Kong and the role of Architecture in this changing environment. 01

These locations would be the anchor point of the recycling process of the whole landfill system as they to began to emerge with stilt house structure and engage with local community and economy while remediate the accumulation of coastal waste by collecting and recycling them.

The Landscape of separation is a spatial intervention that utilizes natural resources, like water displacement, tidal level changes and the site landforms to perform a initial coastal waste separation according to the density and the physical properties of the incoming waste. The change of form and density in the wood groupings will sort out and direct the waste into desire area for extraction process.
ganism, fungi and insects has the capability to survive to the waste environment and develop an appetite to consume waste material. This new technology gave us a new hope in eliminating waste material in an industrial scale in the near future. The established landfill system would be the spine to connect the architecture that adopt different kinds of new methods to digest waste material.

MAPPING noise x SDU district
Shum Shui po, Yau Tsim Mong, Wan Chai fews of the old urban district in Hong Kong that inhabited the highest number of SDU tenants. The noise map and the air quality statistics has indicated these districts are also the most exposed to the excessive levels of traffic noise and highest concentration of pollutant. One of the reasons why SDUs are not considered as a permanent housing solution is the inability to provide adequate living conditions to the occupants. Not to mention the unit size, the unit being studied is no exception to the environmental problems found in most of the SDUs – poor air ventilation, noise pollution, light pollution etc. 06
24 HOURS LIVING CONDITION urban environmental problems The environmental problems that affect the living condition of SDU could be concluded into 5 aspects : 1. solar heat gain 2. construction work 3. heavy traffic 4. dust and pollutants 5. unwanted street light

This ridiculously outdated mindset is comparable to the 1696 window tax introduced by William III of England when people are taxed on the sizes and number of punctures at their homes and windows consequently became a symbol of social status. Furthermore, the building regulations stated natural light and ventilation are required for all inhabitable spaces such as the living room and bedrooms. The objective of designing the Quiet Screen is to explore the function of windows to tackle the

This offers a potential to study the effects of windows at different scales as a component and how minimum intervention could be made to maximize the comfort level of the unit. 07

The unit of the Cheng’s family is located at the corner on the 2/F of Kam Tseuk Building in Tin Wan. The Family of four consists of the parents and two young children has been settling there for over 18 months. With the construction sites and heavy traffic nearby, the family suffered from noise and air pollution. Consequently, they barely open the Window and covered the Window with Foil to prevent the unwanted street light into the unit. 08

An Adaptive stackable system is proposed to replace the broken wardrobe in the flat. The Design attempts to provide more storage space and flexibility to the arrangements to future usage. The challenge is to address the environmental problems namely sound pollution and the physical dimensions of the current wardrobe space while allowing it to extend beyond it in the future. 09

Our Studio Journey began at the Ferry Pier in central - the commercial center of Hong Kong. Then travel along the west coast of Hong Kong - which is known for its heavily infrastructured coastline and the main water logistic route from China to Hong Kong. Finally we destinate at Lau Fau Shan - a fishing village that is close to the Hong Kong-China border. Where panorama collages are the methodology of this studio to document our findings and identify the ecologies of Inbetweeners on the journey of West Coast. After we have identified the fragment of ecology we want to intervene, we began to deducing the architectural language from existing fish farm – from their structure systems, type of spaces, to constructing methods and use of material. 11

Pixel ate d L ands c ap e Fish farm structure should not be only limited to the use of fish farming, while the structure has the potential to be augmented into a floating landscape at the open sea of Hong Kong. The pixelated landscape is a self-build system that allows common fishermen or workers to expand or amend the structure according to the programs and size of operation. This system incorporates the traditional way of building and the use of material to construct new typologies of structure that could accommodate more diversified programs such as leisure activities, diving towers and shallow decks. The entire floating structure of this augmented fish farm will be built following the patterns and grid of existing fish farm so that the old and the new could be adjoining into one structure. 12

The concept of the design is a kiln. Kiln used to have a high value to the village as it convert oyster shells and dead corals into lime powder that can Pier
be used in multiple industry in the past - farming, fishing or as building materials. The kiln itself is representing the best days and the success of Man Wan Chung Village as a fishing village. However, due the environmental issues and development in the town, kiln lost its value to the village. Therefore, my concept is to re-invent kiln and incorporate its historical background and physical features into the library in order to give kilns a new

My current project at Rocco Design Ltd is Chu Hai University which is approaching the final construction stage. The entire building has been divided into the east and west blocks to accommodate different programs over a podium of communal activities. The library and the student union are remodeled as bridges to connect the two blocks which became an iconic gateway for the overall design. As an Architectural Trainee in a project team, my jobs included producing design studies and drawings, site cooperation and administrative support. I also assist in resolving issues and problems arise in construction and conduct site visits to check on progress and coordinate the work of contractors. 22

The 2 schemes of installation might look very different in term of execution, they share the similar concept - each colour of string / leaves represent the different types of people that mingle in our society. Together, they interweaves to portrait the colourful and diversify scene to lighten up the dense and pack space - like people in Hong Kong. The second scheme is an installation embedded with motion sensor. It is design to interact with pedestrian while they passed by and trigger the sensor. The leaves hidden in the wooden ring would bloom once motions were detected. 24

Happy D project is a collaboration with HKDC and HKDL that aims to connect local community with happiness through imagination. We noticed a social phenomenon of lacking communication between people. Hence, we want to create a media that could encourage people to interact with others by two simple actions - speak and listen. As the designer of this project, I am responsible to produce drawings of design studies, concept diagram and construction details. Our team has also built a structure mock-up to test the installation detail for the device. Through meetings with different parties like contractors and professionals, we were able to in-cooperate their advices and improve our design in order to develop the final art installation in PMQ, 25
