REDLINING 1934
By looking at this map (right) one can see the origin of divisions in Miami-Dade, this 1935 map looks nearly identical to a racial dot map of the 2011 census (above). In the Redlining map, the more desirable areas were areas strictly regulated by housing laws, granting loans to only European-Americans. While Hazardous areas were populated by immigrants or African-Americans. These maps dictated who moved where, and who obrtain morgages. The 2011 census, although illustrated a reality nearing a century later, shows back communities in green, hispanic communities in orange, and white comunities in blue. As a result these communities were under-funded, and basically built to fail. These types of underfunded communities exist plentifully in the United States. These cities raise individuals who don’t have a discipline problem, they have a sickness. These people have been infected with hopelessness from the age that their children. Destined to follow the fate of their neighbors. These issues are historic and complex. According to the Urban Consulate, a community engagement grouup in Detriot, Solving it starts with humanizing. To remove language that identifies people to their mistakes: words like crack houses, pimps, and drug dealers. It isn’t about finding jobs for these people. Further, it’s about changing the culture through empany and thus engage in the oldest from of learning-storytelling.
“COLORED TOWN” 1896-1934
Colored town was a community established by eastern railway workers in the 19th century. By 1930’s this community was home to over 20,000 people. Colored town -modern day Overtown- was the cultural heart of black culture in Miami even through the government’s efforts to “clear the slums” in order to expand downtown’s central business district.
The Start of the “Projects” 1937
Liberty Square was the first government housing projects to serve the back community. This housing project was designed to alleviate overcrowding in Overtown. However, there was racist backlash from people who feared that the boundaries between the races were blurring. This lead to lobbyist fighting to create a wall (Known as a “Race Wall”) around the 5 blocks of Liberty City
I-95 1956
The interstate defense highway act lead to the deconstruction of the business center of Overtown. The east-west portion of the highway alone displaced 18,000 residents, which was at this time half of Overtown’s population. Worst of all, displaced families often didn’t receive relocation assistance.
