THAT’S SO GAY I’M not offended by much, but if I hear people use the phrase “That’s so gay” when referring to something negative, I have to speak up. Their intent may not be homophobic but the real implications of the statement are. Words change their meaning over time. Language evolves - I accept that. But so starkly within less than a generation? No. There’s nothing more frustrating than being told “gay” doesn’t exclusively describe my sexuality, but that it can also mean something ‘shit’ as well, and that I just need to “get over it”. I’ve ‘got over’ many things in my life. Accepting who I am, understanding that some people don’t like it, reconciling my faith, saving my life, defending my friends and family. I fought myself for years to accept the term, to proudly tell someone “I am gay” and not feel my blood pressure rise - hell, to tell it to myself was an achievement. It’s too soon to discard the war-wounds of the past when the battle still wages on.
PRISM SUMMER 13 • 8
I don’t take for granted the freedom my husband and I enjoy because we’re fortunate not to live in any one of the countless countries around the world where you’ll be hunted, tortured and killed for your perceived offense to “God” (whoever she may be). Having a virtual world where equality and safety is a valuable outlet – and lifeline – to so many, is something precious indeed. So here at least, we are real and virtual, happy and healthy – and most importantly, free. In essence, Pride
for me is that celebration, affirmation and support that we either need to have, or need to share. Second Pride is more than affirming any one label - whichever (or none) you choose. For me, it can transcend politics and unite a diverse, global community of people who refuse to accept that being lesbian, gay, transgender or bisexual, is either derogatory or crippling. It affirms that we’re worth something and we won’t be stripped of our struggles, our achievements or our dignity. Those who haven’t struggled to feel safe and accepted in a world where their sexuality is still considered a choice, a defect or an affront to traditional family values, have no right to use “gay” as a derogitory descriptor and then try and justify it by claiming that the meaning has changed. They fail to understand that being gay can still hurt. That despite a warming cultural embrace in western media, it isn’t widely accepted. They fail to see that they are transitioning a word that some of us have battled to accept as representing us, to describe something that is “shameful” and “bad” using sexuality as their conduit. I am Gay and that’s a good thing. I have no intention to “get over it”! - Kere

A CONDITION OF HARMONY PRIDE - “a becoming or dignified sense of what is due to oneself or one’s position or character; self-respect; selfesteem.”
UNITY- “the quality or state of being made one, a condition of harmony, a totality of related parts : an entity that is a complex or systematic whole” Upon looking through a dictionary, this is the definition of Pride that most of us think about when looking at the Pride movement. It definitely describes us individually and collectively as gay people as we came out of the closet and asserted ourselves in the battle for equality. The one unmistakable fact is that we never could have made the gains we have without becoming a unified force in our communities locally, nationally, and globally. Pride celebrations throughout the world are a display of that unity and a recognition of our Pride as a distinct and valuable part the community.
PRISM SUMMER 13 • 10
For more than eight years Pride in Second Life, Second Pride, has tried to be THAT place where once a year, we as gay people come together and celebrate and share as a community. Some years we have done a better job than others. Some years we have seen our Pride celebration barely take place and other years it has been a huge success. But it has always taken place, it has always brought large numbers or community together, and we have always , as a community found ways to support our Pride celebration through the generosity of our
sponsors, vendors and attendees. As a governing Board, the Second Pride board of directors has evolved into an open, democratic, and dedicated team, who strive to provide to the community a festival worthy of their time and support. This year the Board has worked hard as a unified team in creating a celebration that we can all be proud of and look to as a model for the future.
“The one unmistakable fact is that we never could have made the gains we have without becoming a unified force in our communities locally, nationally, and globally.”
Three years ago Second Pride made the the bold move to redefine itself in an effort to better serve the LGBTQ community. We have created a new mission: “To serve, support and empower the diverse LGBT communities of Second Life®”. We have rewritten our bylaws to ensure that everything we do is open and transparent to the rest of the community. Our website is open for all to see our meeting minutes, our Treasury, and activities of the membership and the Board.
CHAIRPERSON’S CORNER
Over the years Second Pride has donated over US$25,000 to out-world charities in support of LGBTQ advocacy, and support groups aligned with our community goals. Last year the Board struggled with how to best use the funds available to Second Pride to best serve our virtual community and fulfill our mission. After months of debate, membership meetings and discussion, it was decided to use these funds to support the LGBTQ nonprofit educational, support, advocacy and service groups that work to better our community here in our virtual world. Second Pride procured for, L$1, the Second Pride region towards that purpose. This region will be the permanent home to Second Pride and serve as a center for LGBTQ educational, support, advocacy, and service groups. It will be a resource for all of us to learn about each facet of our community, and hopefully, bring us together.
Within eight weeks after the festival closes, Second Pride will once again conduct its annual elections, THIS will be a time for discussion and the sharing of ideas. I will not be running for the any position this next year, per the rules established in our By-Laws. These Bylaws allow for a dynamic and ever changing leadership of our group, an opportunity for new ideas and new directions. I would encourage anyone to seek office and I would hope that you will experience the satisfaction I had in leading such a dedicated, unselfish, and talented team this past year. Semper Fi - Doc Spad, Chairperson Second Pride
Yes there is controversy, just as in any democratic organization. Our meetings are an open forum for any and all to share their ideas and the direction they think Pride should go. Often people are passionate about these things. Some people with personal economic interests feel threatened by our community group, owned by no one, struggling to forward our mission to a more unified LGBTQ community. PRISM SUMMER 13 • 11
I would hope that over this next year Pride moves to become a greater force in unifying our community and becoming a resource for ALL LGBTQ interests in Second Life.

The legislature essentially makes displays of homosexuality illegal. EDITORIAL CLARITY AND RICORACER FLUX
CAMPAIGN
TAKING A STAND PRISM meets Editorial Clarity and RicoRacer Flux, founders of the Stand4Love photography campaign and gets to know a little more behind the stand they’re committed to taking. Interview: Kere Delcon, Image: Editorial Clarity
“OUR goal is to spread awareness that two consenting adults should have the right to love and marry regardless of their race or sexual orientation. If we can open someone’s mind and promote tolerance and equality, then our goal has been achieved.” Editorial Clarity’s words ring true on what seems like such an easy thing to achieve: Find love, Make a commitment together, get married. But as he points out, he and his partner, quite simply, can’t. “I want to marry him - and he’s agreed, but we can’t. It is illegal.” As Britain moves toward passing marriage equality into law, Edi and RicoRacer Flux’s big day grows ever-closer to becoming reality. But they’re not booking the band just yet.
It’s a pictorial campaign based in Second Life in which participants will take an image of themselves on a plain white or black background then add the Stand4Love Logo. Submitters can add their message of support with all pictures received published here on the Stand4Love blog.
“People need to see that gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people are all human beings who are capable to love and be in committed, long-term, loving and healthy relationships.” Submissions for this year’s campaign are open until 30 June 2013. For more information on how to participate visit: http://stand4love.wordpress.com ░ Interview: Kere Delcon Image: Editorial Clarity
The campaign also features a Facebook page and Flickr group, with more than 700 submissions in 2012. “The campaign last year got an amazing amount of support. We had over 700 images, loads of sponsors, loads of support. “This time last year, I wouldn’t be able to sit here and say, ‘Hi my name’s Edi, I’m a young gay man and I’m proud of it’. Seeing the support from last year’s campaign honestly helped me.”

“Marriage should be available to any loving couple. Each one of us has the right to liberty, justice and the pursuit of happiness. Everyone has the right to love and be loved in return. Gay, lesbian, straight, transgendered or bisexual. Sexual orientation or race shouldn’t matter.”
And so last year, Stand4Love was born - an awareness project to promote the visibility and rights of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Straight loving couples to have the right to marry and be recognized by the law across the world.

COMMUNITY: TRANSGENDER VETERANS
PRISM SUMMER 13 • 18
The Transgender American Veterans’ Association (TAVA) was founded in 2003 to provide support and information to transgender veterans.
140 paying members. The Rainbow Veterans group has 37 SL members.
The association is also geared toward educating our legislators at all levels of government regarding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) issues with an emphasis on Transgender veterans. in Second Life, TAVA is represented in by Jenelle Levenque who is the National Treasurer.
“Some people I meet are just curious and know little or nothing about transgender people or issues. Some of the transgender people I meet are having issues of various kinds. Veterans not only have transgender issues, but veteran related issues on top such as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder or Traumatic Brain Injury. Sexual assault and general harassment come into play as well.
Jenelle, a US Navy Veteran on active duty from 1964 until 1979, says TAVA has had a presence in SL since she first logged in, early October 2008.
“In many cases there is no local support group to them. I am not a counselor or lawyer, but I can sometimes point them in the direction to get assistance.”
“I acquired some property and put up an office. I called the original group “Rainbow Veterans”. It had a wider reach than just transgender and has sort of languished ever since. I then started the TAVA group so it was more obviously transgender,” she says. “I would like to see Rainbow Veterans get active again”.
Jenelle’s office has a system that records visitors and sends her an inworld message. Sometimes it’s a curious passer-by, occasionally it may be someone looking for support that can be hard to find. “If I’m available I can sometimes get to them before they leave. The risk level varies, especially with each section of the country. For example: North East Ohio seems to be much more tolerant than the state of Mississippi.”
Although only a few are actively involved, Jenelle says Second Life’s Transgender Veterans group has 44 registered members. Outside of Second Life, TAVA has about
Outside of Second Life, Jenelle is a veterans’ advocate, a Life Member
of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, American Veterans, Jewish War Veterans of the United States, and Transgender American Veterans’ Association, as well as VicePresident of a veterans related foundation. “I’m also a member of Equality Ohio (the state I live in) and TransFamiliesCleveland. “I think the prime motivating factor for me is first off, I’m Jewish. My mother’s family lost nearly 100 per cent of their relatives living in Europe during the Holocaust. I can see no justification for discrimination of any kind. “I’ve become focused on LGBT issues since I can see the obvious discrimination and intolerance for us. The only real way to change it is through persistent, continuous education. When people meet someone from the class and get to know them, it makes it more difficult to discriminate. You hear something negative about some group, like transgender, and think, but Susie isn’t like that. “Being out is a double-edge sword in that intolerance doesn’t change instantaneously.
COMMUNITY: TRANSGENDER VETERANS
“We need to be careful and walk a fine line during the transition. I was brought up to believe that you help people, not because you expect a return, but because they need help. It’s as simple as that.” Jenelle says the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’, a policy which prohibited military personnel from discriminating against or harassing closeted homosexual or bisexual service members or applicants, while barring openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual persons from military service, is a goos step toward tolerance but has little effect on transgender.
“Being out is a doubleedge sword in that intolerance doesn’t change instantaneously. We need to be careful and walk a fine line during the transition.”
“On the other hand, people will eventually be more interested in
Jenelle is proud of her military service and proud of her younger daughter who did a tour during Desert Storm. “I’m proud that I can advocate for people who are discriminated against. Like that one basketball player said, it’s not easy to be the only one to raise your hand. “I’m proud that TAVA has actually accomplished our mission. In 2011, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs published a policy on the proper treatment of transgender veterans at their facilities. This policy has now been published as part of the standing regulations. “I’m most proud of my family. I married young and started early. Our last anniversary was number 48. Yep, I’m bragging. Our two daughters are doing ok in the world and we have five grandchildren, but in reality we have eight due to marriages. “We currently have three great grandkids. The grandkids are doing well and I’m really proud of their
achievements so far. When you want to know if you’re a good parent, look at the grandkids. “TAVA has accomplished our originally published mission. We are currently taking a look at TAVA to determine what we should do next. It would be nice if we could disband because all was well, but there are still to many obstacles for transgender to become who we really are. “Once we define our next mission, we’ll be back on track working with our legislators to see that we receive, not special privileges, but equal treatment with everyone else. “A wise man once said: ‘You cannot enslave a free man. The most you can do is kill him.’ I intend to stay free.” ░ Interview and image: Kere Delcon Click here to visit TAVA in the Second Life® Virtual World

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE SPEEDO? FABRIC that breathes and makes you go faster is a staple in sportswear it seems. Companies spend billions on designing indestructible lycra-esque skins akin only to the red and blue on the Man of Steel himself. This is the business of athletic fashion. Our sports men and women are cooler, quicker and slipperier than they’ve even been. They’re also more covered. Once they were runners – now they’re cheetahs, they were swimmers – now they’re sharks. PRISM SUMMER 13 • 23
At least if the London games were to teach us anything. It’s hard to think a year has passed since that glorious spectacle of 2012 – and to be fair, it’s not just the London Olympics denying us pool-cam gratification. >
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE SPEEDO? It’s any major sporting event of the past 13 years – ever since Speedo invented the full-body fast skin, designed to mimic the skin of a shark, with stitching that isolates various muscle groups and does various other things in the water that I don’t quite understand. You see, I don’t care for the technology. I don’t really care if anybody swims faster than anybody in the previous Olympics – or even the one before that. I care who wins this race – and I’m usually rooting for the hottest. Sure, it’s shallow – but am I really the only one watching the athletes parading in during the opening ceremony, and by them, picking out the events by which I’ll programme my TV to record? The Olympics were founded with eye candy – its first competitors admired for their physical prowess, athleticism and aesthetics. The Ancient Greeks celebrated the athletic form; in the arena, the athlete was a god. Fast forward a little from Ancient Greece, to 1913. The first competitive swimsuit commercially produced was made of wool and weighed nine pounds. After World War II, nylon became the major fabric of competition, in 1964 colored suits were introduced, and in the 1970s and 1980s, the primary suit has become the speedo brief and basic women’s suit still used today – except when it really counts. When it really counts – when the world is watching the very best of every nation line up on that starting block, there’s not a nipple in sight. Those perfect pecs stuffed and flattened in a shark-like skin that covers far too much. In a trend at odds with almost every other sport, professional men’s swimwear has begun to cover more. It’s a tragedy for the armchair Olympian like myself (don’t even get me started on the gender discrimination that covers men up in Beach Volleyball – it’s outrageous!). I don’t advocate (publicly) for a return to Olympic nudity. There’s plenty of action in the water (diving, water-polo, synchronised diving) that bares plenty to oggle – er, admire. But I suppose at some point, begs the question – are the billions invested in claiming back those wet, international milliseconds a worthwhile investment?
PRISM SUMMER 13 • 24
As we compete to crown the world’s most accomplished men and women, we’re equipping them in skins to mimic anything but. It seems being human is no longer good enough, and that’s a pity – because we run the risk of simply covering up even more. I guess I have my Tru Blood and Spartacus DVDs – but without the fluorescent lighting and chlorine, it’s just not the same. ░ Kere Delcon isn’t really a lecherous perve. He’s well-mannered, a little shy, and doesn’t actually own Tru Blood on DVD yet, but felt it best conveyed his point.

YOUR PRIDE BOARD
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TODAY? PRISM gets to know the Second Pride board of directors a little better, and finds out what Pride means to them.
KHARISSA INDIGO EVENTS DIRECTOR USA I joined Second Life in 2007 and was the last one in my house to do it, My son joined in 2005. I enjoy listening to music and a lot of the clubs are great but I have made some really good friends and some are very close to me. I would not have met them other wise
Pride is freedom... plain and simple. What are some of the biggest challenges Facing the LGBT Community? I think the biggest challenge is fear. ‘John Q Public’ is afraid.
How is it still acceptable to legally discriminate against LGBT people, and what can be done to make positive change? How is it acceptable to discriminate at all? I don’t understand why anyone gets away with it in this day and age. Education is the key to a lot. Was there ever a time you weren’t proud to be who you are - when standing up for yourself was easier said then done? Of course – and sexuality has nothing to do with it... it takes strength to be who you are. What would you say to someone, struggling with their sexual or gender identity, their self-worth or their safety? It gets better and surround yourself with supportive people. Believe in yourself because you are beautiful.

I help people that want to sponsor a Second Pride event, find them DJ’s and/or Hosts.. help with any planning or advertising needs . I make sure all said events are posted on the website and I schedule the events for the Second Pride Festival. I take an active role in helping shape the plans for the year and first learned about Second Pride in 2008 when I was working with Ironworks. In 2010 I became a co-chair with Marcus Steeplechase for Events. In 2011 I helped out with anything they needed, and in 2012, I ran for this position and was elected now two years in a row.
My son is bisexual and I love him - I guess that inspired me to become involved. Secondly I grew up in an era of prejudice; Black people trying to exercise their rights and women burning their bras. I look at people and all I see are people, yes they are different types as we are all special in our own ways but we ALL deserve to be treated the same or equal. I believe we should all have the opportunity to live, love and enjoy life to its fullest. Besides, I love my son and my friends and encourage them to be who they are!

When I first got into Second Life and Second Pride, I was in the Marine Corps. Because of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” I was still in the closet. Coming out would have placed my career in jeopardy. Second Life and Pride gave me a chance to “come out”, be part of the LGBTQ community and develop gay friendships that I found it hard to do in RL. Attending the Pride festival has a way for me to participate, when I couldn’t in RL. This is my second year as chairperson, and will be the first time that I have openly participated in a RL Festival.
Ignorance is our common foe. People just don’t know the truth What are some of the biggest challenges facing the LGBT community? As our quest for equality gains momentum ...I feel that unity is our greatest challenge. The advances that we have seen in the Real World over the past several years could not have been achieved without a unified and politically astute collection of the various groups within the LGBTQ community. I hope that through Pride and similar educational, support, and advocacy groups inworld, that we can create bridges and unite us in Second Life. People involved in our community
need to develop a common interest in bringing our community together. Was there ever a time you weren’t proud to be who you are - when standing up for yourself was easier said then done? As a Marine....Never . As a gay man...absolutely! As a gay Marine I had a legal system working against me. If you came forward, you paid the price and were discharged. As a bi man I had to deal with a prejudiced straight world, and gay people who thought being bisexual was a cop-out or not admitting to myself that I was “gay”. Part of self-respect means that sometimes you have to tell people to “fuck off”, even if it’s under your breath!
YOUR PRIDE BOARD
BAZ CEAWLIN IT DIRECTOR USA I joined Second Life in June 2007. After reading an article about it, I was interested in leaning about how virtual worlds could impact marketing/advertising for real world Companies. I was inspired to become involved in Second Pride by the work that the Board did in 2012, I have long believed that Second Pride should direct their efforts to supporting the inworld community. I was previously involved as a Sponsor, and this is my first year serving on the Board. I am the IT Director, primarily my job is to manage the Second Pride website.
I think it is terrible for someone to feel they are not proud because they are not out. Coming out is a process and it starts with coming out to yourself and being proud of that. What would you say to someone, struggling with their sexual or gender identity, their self-worth or their safety? I would say, “It’s Okay”. It is natural and normal to struggle with these things and the most important thing is to deal with these issues in a way that you are comfortable with.
No single way is the correct way to go through this process. I recommend finding a friend (or few close people) who have been through it that you can talk things through with. Have you been active within any pride movements in RL? I have served on boards of several RL Community Festivals but none of them were pride festivals. I have a background in Marketing and Promotions and am currently working to establish myself as a Graphic Designer.

TOOTSIE NOOTAN, SECURITY CHAIR USA I have tons of friends in Second Life. I use some support services here in SL as well as provide support in a few places. I was tired of the fact that people didnt really talk much in the mmorpg games. I found this place to be more social and stayed.

Ive come to the Second Pride festivals since my first year in SL, in 2008. however this is my second year on the board. I stay involved because its fun and great for meeting new people. Pride to me is a celebration in which we can be who we are. To recognize that we are free to be out. That we don’t have to hide anymore. I’ve attended San Fransisco Pride many times with my children and their LGBT friends. I’ve been involved with the local LGBT prom for the past five years.
I guess just by being who I am, and not forcing things down people’s throats, they decided there was nothing abnormal about me. What are some of the biggest challenges facing the LGBT community? Overcoming bigotry so that we can afford the right everyone else is. Here in California we are waiting on the Supreme Court. How is it still acceptable to legally discriminate against LGBT people, and what can be done to make positive change? It’s not. I guess I am in a different position having kids. I homeschooled through a local charter school. Just by acting like normal, people made comments that they had never met a transgender woman before
and they had thought we were all weird. After getting to know me all the moms became my friend, I felt no discrimination. Was there ever a time you weren’t proud to be who you are - when standing up for yourself was easier said then done? Oh geez, What a question for a Transgender person. 40 years of my life. Then is spent two years being akward being who I was. I don’t really feel I have to stand up, people see me as a woman in RL. Ok in a lesbian relationship but thats not unusual in San Francisco. Im disabled so I have retired. I have a partner I met in SL and moved her cross country to live with me. Ive got three kids. 20(g), 19(g), and 14(b)
YOUR PRIDE BOARD
TYLO MABELLON, MARKETING CHAIR USA I initially joined Second Life because at the time I was living in Florida. And instead of staying in touch with my brother via phone/ email, he discovered Second Life and suggested it as a way for us to stay connected. Having moved from a city in Florida to a small town in West Texas, Second Life has also become my only connection to any kind of gay social life. I’ve actually been a vendor for a few Second Pride festivals in the past but this is actually my first time being on the board. To me, pride means being proud of who you are whether you’re gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or even straight. It’s internal.
What are some of the biggest challenges facing the LGBT community? Well we know of the big ones: gay marriage and adoption by gay couples. But working as a career services professional, there’s another one we’ve missed: workplace discrimination. Although locally 21 states and more than 166 municipalities have enacted laws that prohibit workplace discrimination based on
sexual orientation, there is no federal that protects us. In Texas there is no statewide law that protects LGBTQ employees although laws have been passed in the larger metropolitan areas (Dallas, Houston, Austin, Fort Worth, and El Paso). I live in a small West Texas town and fortunately I work for an organization that accepts my sexuality and we have several LGBTQ employees, but at the same time our employee handbook doesn’t say anything about protecting us from discrimination. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is working on changing that, and so is the state of Texas (finally). But much of that will take a couple of years of work, and that’s if any bills are passed in legislation. In the past they’ve been held up in committees.
PRISM SUMMER 13 • 31
The pride events and parades are just an external expression of how we feel on the inside. It’s a celebration.
Have you been active within any pride movements in RL? When I lived in Florida I was involved in pride events in both Key West and in West Palm Beach. It’s amazing to see how many gay people and their supporters come out. Even moreso, to see city officials come and celebrate with us and take pride themselves in the special occasion.
YOUR PRIDE BOARD
DEXTRUM BOUCHER, COMMUNITY RELATIONS CHAIR USA I started here six years ago to meet people and have fun. To me, SL is the dream of a global village, realized.
PRISM SUMMER 13 • 32
My role within Second Pride is community relations chair. My job is to expand Second Pride’s outreach to various communities. I have played at many of the past festivals in the last six years. This is the first year I have been on the board. Pride is a celebration. It brings people together from all walks of life to celebrate our diversity. To be honest, I wanted to make a difference. I was not satisfied with the festival in the past. Many people like to complain. I am more action oriented.
You cannot criticize a democratic organization if you have made no effort to improve it.
I have been involved in many pride movements starting in the 90s. To me it is an extension of my civil rights work. I have also been heavily involved in the racial equality, feminist, and anti-death penalty movements. What are some of the biggest challenges facing the LGBT community? I think the biggest challenge that faces all oppressed groups is getting together with other groups to work together toward a common goal of social justice. What needs to happen in order to overcome some of those challenges? The most important factor in overcoming oppression will be all oppressed people realizing that their final goal is to fight it. Also, the struggle for social justice cannot just be a political movement, but must also be a cultural and
social movement. What needs to happen in order to overcome some of those challenges? Was there ever a time you weren’t proud to be who you are - when standing up for yourself was easier said then done? I think this has been the experience of most LGBT people throughout history. What would you say to someone, struggling with their sexual or gender identity, their self-worth or their safety? Be true to yourself, fuck all else.
YOUR PRIDE BOARD
KYLE BECKETT, CO-CHAIR AND SECRETARY USA I joined Second Life when it was still fairly new and because it was a new virtual world to explore and socialize in. To me Second Life is a dynamic world where we can create our dreams and live out our fantasies. I love seeing the creativity and experiences others create in Second Life. There have been many interesting art installations, games, shows, hunts, and more over the years that I found very fun and entertaining. My role in Second Pride is Co-Chair/ Secretary. I create the agendas for our meetings, take minutes, and send notices. In the absence of the Chairman, I take over his duties.
What needs to happen in order to overcome some of those challenges? I think we need to keep making people aware of how we are being discriminated against.
What inspired you to become involved? I very much enjoyed last years festival and thought it would be a great time to lend my skills to Second Pride to make this years festival our best yet!
Tell our stories and let ourself be heard to bring about change. It’s about coming together as a community and showing that we will not stand for it anymore.
What does pride mean to you? Passion, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Excellence. What are some of the biggest challenges facing the LGBT community? There are several, but I think the biggest one is the battle for equality. The world is slowly changing, but the more we fight for equality then the faster change will come.
PRISM SUMMER 13 • 33
This was my first year serving on the board, but I have been a member for a long time and volunteered as security at last years festival.
We should have equal rights, be free to marry our partner, and not be discriminated against.

MR GRACEMOUNT, BUILDING CHAIR USA
PRISM SUMMER 13 • 34
I first tried Second Life several years before and it was too buggy and laggy so after playing around for a few hours never went back. Then was interested to try it again one night about three years ago after seeing an interview with an artist from Japan that was using sl to create immersive artwork. My current role within the Second Pride organisation is seeing that the festival sims are built.
I’ve been involved since last year before the festival. I was asked to do the center stage last year and stuck around What inspired you to become involved? Not sure if inspired is the word I would use more like letting Khar talk me into dong a stage for her (not that that was hard to do) and then deciding it was a group that was worthwhile to help and promote.
What does pride mean to you? Gay Pride is a celebration of the diversity in the GLBT culture. What are some of the biggest challenges facing the LGBT community? Acceptance of not just the GLBT community by the straight community but of the diversity within our own community.
YOUR PRIDE BOARD
SQUIRTN WONDER, TREASURER USA I was urged to join SL by a good friend. Since then, I have gained some wonderful friendships from all over the world through Second Life and I can’t imagine giving that up.
How long have you been involved in Second Pride?
position as that fits well with my RL background. What inspired you to become involved? I wanted to be a part of something amazing that affected other people.
I decided to run for the Treasurer Per the By Laws, the annual meeting of Second Pride Festival Group will be held on Saturday 29 June 2013. Announcments as to the time will be made immediately after the Second Pride festival. Elections for the new Board of Directors will be held within eight weeks after that meeting. For more information visit: www.second-pride.com
PRISM SUMMER 13 • 35
I am the Treasurer of Second Pride and as such, I ensure that we keep an accurate record of all lindens received and disbursed and prepare our Treasury Statements.
I started my involvement with Second Pride during the 2011-2012 Festival as a Festival DJ. During that time I really wanted to do more so when the announcements were made that it was time to elect a new board,
