(Christian) Community Development
Community: people, commonality, geographical area Development: process, something changes from an undesired to a desired (better, bigger, etc.) stage..
Community development: positive sustainable change in and for people’s lives..
LRM
•
The change
What causes change to occur/happen?
Please write your opinion in the chat box, we will hear 2-3 people.
LRM
The tension
What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear: tension? Is it positive or negative?
LRM
Facilitating consultation – avoid shortcuts!
What would be, how would a shortcut look like in our work?
Consultation – engaging key individuals (as many as needed) – with all parts of the community…
LRM
Unity and healthy human relations
Community development is fundamentally a process of building effective human relationships and harnessing the energy from those relationships to promote improvements in the lives of people.
LRM
Common vision
Who is supposed to build the vision? The people whose lives are to be impacted!

Knowledge & skills
Man-made tangible things
Natural Resources provided by nature
Adequate combined use -> leads to benefits
Institutions More formal, permanent structures
LRM
Program development Who does it?
The community does for itself
How is it done?
- Training - Participation - Coaching
LRM
Reflection on and protection of the process
Self-corrective guidance mechanism
Human and community development processes need protection
Starting point to relate to (baseline)
What aspect of the process are you actually looking at (indicator) Definition of Success Tool to measure (MoV)
Almost every occurrence that is potentially harmful to the process can be turned into an opportunity for learning and growth, and for creating even greater unity, resolve, and commitment.
LRM
Breakout rooms!
Think about the CHANGE you (your organization, the community, ‌) would like to see happen? Who decided upon this? Is there a common vision built together with the people whose life is going to impacted?
Is there a group of people committed and engaged to facilitate/lead this process, and to create space for others to step in, follow, flourish? Is the development process creating opportunities for personal growth and learning? Were you/are you able to facilitate networking, relationship building and resource mobilization?
Do you have a well developed program, which was driven by the people whose life is being impacted by the process? Do you spend time regularly to sit, breath and reflect on how the development process is going?
LRM
Principles & Asset Identification
The ABCD approach, starts with the half-full glass – what the community already has that helps strengthen the community.
Deficiency and needs
Capacity and gifts
It starts with what we have and builds from there!
LRM
ABCD approach
1.
ABCD is an approach (strategy) for sustainable community-driven development and organization.
2.
ABCD’s purpose is to build on the assets and capabilities that are present in the community.
3.
ABCD mobilizes individuals, (in)formal community structures/groups and institutions to come together to build on their assets.
4.
ABCD creates local social economic opportunity and growth.
LRM
Dependency vs Joint action
