John R.W. Stott (1921-2011) by Dr. Al Tizon On July 27, 2011, John R.W. Stott went home. He was 90 years old. Among many other things, Stott was the chief drafter of the Lausanne Covenant, a document that many evangelical mission groups, relief and development agencies, and even churches have adopted as their Mission Statement or Statement of Faith. Furthermore, Stott was one of the earliest proponents of holistic ministry, urging the evangelical church to go beyond personal evangelism in our mission in the world. Historian Randall Balmer’s short article discusses this and other significant ways in which Stott challenged the worldwide evangelical community to embrace the full implications of the gospel. Also worth reading is Michael Gerson’s tribute to Stott.
