Praying for the President

Page 1

Praying for the President by Al Tizon I was moved by a blog entry by my friend Eugene Cho, pastor of Quest Church in Seattle, WA. He shared with his readers a recent encounter with President Barack Obama. Among other things, they talked about prayer. The president thanked Eugene for praying for him, and he specifically requested that he also pray for his family. The way Eugene recounted that part of the conversation reminded me of the humanity of the president; it seems that his concerns and worries and experiences are the same as ours. How easy it is to dehumanize the president! If we like him, we raise him to idolatrous heights. If we don’t like him, we curse and slander him; we call him names; we spew venom. Eugene pleads with us to pray for the president and his family. By doing so, we keep from divinizing or demonizing him, depending on our political leanings; we remember his humanity.
