Our Vision
on earth as it is in heaven: radical love made visible
Our Mission
“I always tell people that no single organization played more of a role in shaping my vision than ESA.” Dr. David P. Gushee, Distinguished University Professor, Mercer University
We “aid and abet” the body of Christ to practice holistic ministry, subvert empire, and transform culture through education and activism in solidarity with those who are impoverished, oppressed, and marginalized (i.e. we help Christians be better Christians).
Our History ESA began in 1973 to help restore biblical compassion and justice to the agenda of evangelical mission. Its charter document, the “Chicago Declaration of Evangelical Social Concern,” was written at a Thanksgiving gathering of 40 evangelical leaders. Since 2003, the continuing work of ESA has launched from the Sider Center on Ministry and Public Policy at Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University, where its faithful action and ministry are cultivated in the rich soil of a theological learning community.
Our Ministries ESA looks deeply at today’s most pressing issues through a national magazine, PRISM, and ePistle, a weekly e-newsletter. ESA helps local churches love radically through the development and practice of holistic ministry, combining evangelism and social action. ESA creates resources and opportunities to help Christians live justly in relation to national and international public policy issues. ESA nurtures the next generation of biblical leaders through the Sider Scholar program at Palmer Theological Seminary. 3
Content Overview PRISM and ePistle look deeply at today’s most pressing issues. From thematic issues on the church’s response to sexual diversity, the environment, and peacemaking in the Holy Land to issues that cover a variety of current events and controversial topics in ministry—if people argue about it, we cover it.
Awards PRISM magazine regularly brings home recognition for its excellence from the Evangelical Press Association’s annual awards. In the past few years, PRISM has won a dozen awards in such categories as reporting and design. ESA co-president (and frequent PRISM contributor) Al Tizon’s book Missional Preaching was recognized by Outreach magazine as the Resource of the Year in the preaching category in 2013. PRISM Editor Kristyn Komarnicki received, in 2011, Christian for Biblical Equality’s Micah Award, which “honors those who exhibit courage, creativity, and tenacity in opposing abuse and advancing justice for women and children in Christ’s name.”
“PRISM magazine’s dedication to exposing the real-world impact of human trafficking on women and girls has been impressive. I’m grateful for their work and hope it continues.” U.S. Congressional Representative
