Negotiations in Live -Work Typology of Housing Ahmedabad | Research Thesis Earlier people used to design house according to their occupation, whereas in twenty-first-century, people still work from home but now they live and work in houses that have not been designed for that working practice. In this era where housing is mass produced, it cannot respond to all the requirements of a different occupation. These houses are occupied by people with different backgrounds, lifestyles, and occupation. But it is interesting to see that how people still adapt to it and modify it as per their needs. Since people with different occupation have different requirements and therefore there is a need for customization in the architecture of dwellings, despite being of a mass-produced nature, especially, when being done for people in the Lower Income Group who engage majorly in home-based work. This study analyses negotiations made by LIG (Lower Income Group) people to accommodate work environment in their houses. It further derives
parameters
which can be considered while designing mass-produced housing.

1. Understanding existing buildings and the architect’s manifesto Gandhi Ashram was taken as case study and analyzed for its spatial characteristics. Multiple other projects were put together on a site by the group to design a ‘Dream City’. The challenge was to resolve the overlaps between the projects with conflicting manifestos.

In the first part, the forms of different existing building were abstracted and a whole new city was made which was named ‘Utopian city’ and in the second one, designing was done to convince the manifesto selected at the beginning.

2. Developing a Manifesto Through the readings done on Bernard Tschumi, the manifesto developed was, ‘Building is like a language’. The site given was

modifications were made according to this manifesto. Three elements were extracted: slab,ramp and column. These elements were recomposed to design a pavilion. The

The studio was an attempt at accentuating the process of translating a manifesto into design, that created manifesto of each student shall influence the program accordingly. Taking the influence of the building ‘Sanskar Kendralocated in Ahmedabad; ramps, columns and slabs were used to design the pavilion.

Community Housing Madhapar, Bhuj This project deals with the design of a house-type and a cluster of 36 houses in new settlements of Madhapar – a village about 3kms before Bhuj, in Kutchh. Section

Activity and life around public open spaces usually form near its edges.
This is a prevalent typology in this part of Kutchh, and can be found in villages
