The 10-day workshop was a skill development programme, on Photography, with the reference to Architecture and Spaces around us. introduction to how Photography can be a compelling skill for Architects and Students with the understanding of any Space was given. Proper planning and consistent practice is essential for the consistency in quality in the photographs. Inspite of the level of camera one possess, the workshop rather concentrated on how to compose and reproduce a scene, as visualized. The Workshop attempted and cracked the ways of seeing, esp spaces, with a perception and own understanding eventually. We had interactive sessions of workshop throughout all the days, dealing with the aspects of Photography and Architecture, shooting sessions (late evening & early morning), critical reviews and documentary screening, besides Printing and showcasing the photographs in an effective way.

Work Plan: The entire 10-day workshop will be split into 5 major parts. Basics and History of Photography (Day 1-2) Practice of Basic skills, with Digital Photography Techniques (Day 3-4) Introduction to Architectural Photography and its History (Day 5-6) Group & Individual Projects. (Day 7-9) Printing (Day 10) Group: A total of 10 students attended the workshop and were able to produce good amount of work by experimenting, field visits and presentations given during the class hours. Their work is compiled here in order of their main project and then other preliminary exercises carried out during the workshop.

As a student of architecture, I have always admired beauty and art around. It has helped me become a creative person, and more sensitive towards all the changes that happen around me. When I visited the building for the first time, I could feel the connection between the built and open spaces, which on a whole have a harmony with nature. The language of exposed brick with concrete emphasizing the slabs and the beams, which creates a natural coarse texture, is always an architect’s delight. These became the key features for choosing frames for documenting this building through photography. The buildings is organized in a way that every block (which have different function) has combinations of load bearing walls, double heights, and courtyard spaces which give plenty of light and ventilation. The windows have wooden lovers on top, which let in natural light into the spaces. The building faces inwards, which creates semiprivate spaces for performances and gatherings. When the campus is empty, one can be alone with nature in spite of being surrounded by built masses.

I was able to achieve my objective of having a broader perspective of architectural photography through this course. The course was well organised and balanced. The field trips made it possible for me to get a good insight in architectural photography and changed my view of looking at the buildings. IIM was established in 1961, it has consistently ranked one of the best business school in Asia Pacific Region. Designed by Louis Khan, it is one of the major iconic structures of modern architecture. One can see major play of light and shadow in its structures.All the major aspects of architectural photography were covered in IIM. We learnt how to capture and depict it in an interesting way that looks visually appealing.

It was a wonderful journey which we had in past 10 days. We saw great places during this span and learnt many things on Architectural Photography with Maniyasaran to guide. IIM Ahmedabad has always been special and it was even better after a whole shoot through the lens. Though summer was bit harsh but IIM made it easier for me and my fellow colleagues. Shooting the heritage so close and personal left me with memories to cherish and changed my way to look at Architectural masterpiece. This summer school was not just about learning but also making new and close friends.

The world through the lens has always fascinated me. This 2 week workshop made me more staunch towards photography. Visiting various places and capturing the heritage and beauty of the buildings was a delightful experience. IIM Ahmedabad has good architectural spaces and a well built structure, which inspires a photographer to shoot. During these days, I lived a part of “life at iim”, which everyone dreams of. Shooting at IIM was an unmatched venture. After doing this course of Architectural Photography under Mani sir, I found a new perspective of seeing and documenting buildings. I had a paradigm shift from ‘taking a photo’ to ‘making a photo’.

Started off by clicking random photographs at the CEPT campus and rounded-off the two weeks by capturing the architectural grandeur of Louis Kahn’s IIM. This workshop has enriched my vocabulary on the abc’s of photography and introduced me to a whole other side of architecture. An ideal workshop is hands-on, where we learn and do. It turns the technical into the practical. This aspect largely contributed in making this photography workshop a success. From understanding on how to use a camera, the first photograph captured, to famous architecture photographers, types of lenses, post-processing techniques; the workshop had it all. The personal project and assignments were graded challenges that helped in invoking the creative side and lured one to experiment with new ideas and techniques. These two weeks gave me the opportunity to learn directly from an expert while developing my own style. More than anything it has given me an appetite for more and beginning of a long relationship with the camera. Looking forward to come again and capture more as “ A good picture keeps a moment from running away’.

TAGORE HALL is situated on the bank of Sabarmati river, Ahmedabad.It is surrounded by busy bridge,Sanskar Kendra and National Institute of Design ,reflecting modern architecture and romanticism of the Ar. B. V. Doshi. Its giant and simple form makes the building abstract. By capturing its abstraction, neatness and simplicity and that has helped me understand it even more .The shadows of the exteriors when observed closely or at a distance creates balanced composition of the concrete texture, light and shadows.

This workshop gave a new hope of capturing things in manual mode in our DSLR’s. The main thing we learnt is how to view things and capture them with their essence. We learnt the difference between taking photograph and making a photograph. On the process I could feel the progress in the quality of my photographs. I would say this workshop helped me to take a first step towards the architectural photography which have a way long to go . The Tagore hall is a majestic concrete structure that stands on the banks of sabarmathi. It is designed with artistic features like Sculptural columns and cantilevers of the seating bowl that dominate the lobby area. The walls are painted with interesting motifs and pattern . The colour and light complement each other . Sangath : The first feeling after entering sangath is peace and Isolation from the external environment . The site was well balanced with landscape , water body and the building . There was constant music which is been played in background while walking on the lawn, that creates a authentic and joyful environment .

With photography as my hobby i chose this subject for the summer school and it turned out to be a fruitful one for me. I improved a lot and also learned that how post processing is equally important. Regular and individual discussions helped a lot. It was a wonderful experience and enjoyed working throughout the course. Gandhi labour institute was established in 1979 by Government of Gujarat as an autonomous society to provide for education, training, study and research in labour and related subjects. There is a sense of extreme calm as one step in. It is as if the already quiet environs of MGLI get another meaning inside the building space. It is language of straight lines of wall and curve of the vaults. Shooting in MGLI is an amazing experience at different times of day. There’s a play of shadow and light because of openings in vaults, giving different sense to the space. The sense of scale and proportions are articulated so very well that one feels the utmost calmness in the space.

The main objective of the course to be chosen was to learn the basics about architectural photography.My personal feedback about the course had met the expectations and I learnt many new things. CEE is a national institute of Ahmedabad which works towards the development of the programmes and the materials to increase the awareness about the environment and the sustainable development .The architectural features of the buildings and the eco -friendly campus of CEE helped us in clearing the doubts about photography.The place itself is dedicated to the environment and hence the greenery added the beauty to the photographs,but at some time only we enjoyed and had a good experience.

Architectural Photography was a fascinating course in terms of the different ways one can look at something the moment we see it through a camera. Before this summer school I had never thought of the lines in a way I know now or noticing the connection between different spaces as a whole. And working was fun because I enjoyed what I did. CEE, Centre for Environment Education, is a campus built in a way that it is mingled with the environment rather a built chunk. When i first walked through the campus i saw just one block and thought rest all was forest but later when i explored i came to know that it is one single block as a whole with all the small blocks connected to each other as parts. The expeirience of photographing that place was quite interesting as we were overwhelmed by the way the architecture is- Four stories of a building built on a slope in a way that all are at ground level at some point. Another thing that made it interesting was the way the plantation is in and around the buildings. Yes it was difficult to get the elevation or the front view because at ebery point a tree or a plant or grasses would be in way. But that challenge itself helped us learn new things such as using the snail’s eye view or bird’s view rather only human eye level and how the lines play around the moment we look from a different angle.
