YOUNIQUE TRAVELS The Living Goddess by Isabella Tree
4
Although it has been a travel destination for many years, Nepal is still a country of mystery. Isabella Tree was struck by this early on, renting a room on Freak Street, a fading hippy colony in the heart of old Kathmandu, while on her gap year in 1983. Wandering nearby, she caught a rare glimpse of the Kumari, a young girl kept in seclusion and worshipped as a deity: 'W ithout warning, a child appears at an ornately carved window on the second floor. She could be six, eight or nine years old. It is impossible to tell. She gazes sternly down on the assembled foreigners, pouting slightly, looking mildly inconvenienced. Her eyes are huge, exaggerated with thick lines of kohl reaching all the way to her temples. She is dressed entirely in red... Her tiny fingers, their nails painted red, clasp a wooden rail across the bottom of the window with the command of a captain at the ship's helm.' The enigma of the Kumari became engrossing on that formative trip but as The Living Goddess reveals, it would be 14 years before Tree was able to return and uncover some of the truth behind the elusive figure. Staying with a friend, the wife of a Gurkha officer, she talks to many ex-Kumaris and immerses herself in Nepali culture. She discovers that the Kumari, often as young as three, is chosen from a caste of Buddhist goldsmiths. When she reaches puberty, she is dismissed and another is found. Although she is Buddhist, the Hindu King of Nepal must kneel at her feet and beg her blessing to rule. Tree's investigations, in this excellent and informative book, are played out against the violence of Nepal's recent history, including the massacre of the Nepali royal family in 2001 and attempts by Maoist revolutionaries to overthrow them.

YOUNIQUE PSYCHOLOGY MOODINESS- NOT JUST AN EMOTION
KRITI CHAKRABORTY
Most of us get depressed from time to time. We are familiar with our disturbances of mood. But this is not just another emotion. Severe fluctuations in mood can lead to mood disorders which are diverse in nature, hence there’s more to it. Mood swings are defined as abrupt changes in mood. Although it is a part of normal human emotions, a normal mood swing will never be intense or persistent enough to lead to serious problems in relationships and workplace. Severe alterations in mood for longer periods of time which are clearly maladaptive indicate some sort of mood disorder. Now the question is how do we understand whether it is one of those normal casual swings or is it a disorder which needs clinical help? If we get into details we will find that these mood disorders are accompanied by a number of biological and psycho social causes behind it. The disorders (in general) are characterized by a number of symptoms suchDiminished interest in life Significant weight loss or weight gain Insomnia or hypersomnia Fatigue Recurrent thoughts of suicide CONTD. 86/1, COLLEGE STREET [THE FOOD TALKIES] Delicious food? Like the kind whose ghosts come to haunt you at 2 pm in the middle of a lecture? Or when on your way to class the fragrance of which coming from the canteen just next door evokes a dragon in your belly? Or say that time when you’re already full with the midday meal but your tongue is not satisfied? Well, 86/1 College Street people are one of those lucky few who don’t have to worry about such sudden hunger swings. With 4 canteens already inside the campus and some popular hot spots for foodies outside, Presidency University folks have very little to complain. Every college has a ‘cheap’ canteen. So does Presidency. The Srishti canteen locatedbeside the NS building, with full meals available at prices as low as Rs 10, it indeed lives up to its name. The demand of this canteen’s Mango yoghurt is so high that before midday, all of it gets sold out. Behold! The most frequented canteen in the university. Meanwhile on the other side of the campus, outside the Baker building, nestled under the branches of a great banyan tree, Sukumar da’s small canteen offers the tastiest of dim paurutis made in a homely way. Just like all the other canteens it’s quite old. Anybody familiar with the 4 ‘P’ s of Presidency? If you are then you would surely know that Pramod da’s canteen forms one of those famous ‘P’s. It is THE ‘adda’ zone in the university grounds. The long tables are crowded throughout the day with students going through heated debates, guitars playing out Mohiner Ghoraguli or Pink Floyd songs, a group cracking up at the back over some shared joke or the card players busy in their game of Bridge or 29. Wondering what’s their tastiest lunch? Well, our Pramod da might make some tasty Fish fries and Chana Parantha but the main magnet of attraction here might be something else apart from food. With the walls painted in artistic detail and posters crying out slogans and classic inspirational quotes, this canteen is the very soul of Presidency. Memories are created here. The 86 canteen just beside the Union room was my most favorite food grabbing site but alas! My happiness came to an end when the canteen decided to bundle up and leave. My Shawarma wrap and cold coffee went with it as well and its departure has left a pretty big void in my tummy. Today, in 86’s place stands the 9 to 9 canteen. Though my faithful love for the Shawarma still burns, the 9 to 9 is doing a good job in treating the sore wounds on my abandoned stomach with Devil eggs and Chicken combos and Dosas and momos and… well you get the picture.

Enough with just the campus joints. Only 86/1 can’t steal the show when the whole of College Street lies sprawled out in front of it. So, moving out from the campus, following the tram line from the university and crossing the main street, meet the Parantha Gali- a sheltered area located inside an alley. As the name says, the place offers varieties of parantha with other similarly fascinating side dishes. This is one place which remains flocked by students all hours of the day. The Coffee House just on the other side of the road from Presidency requires no introduction. A popular hangout zone as it is, it also attracts those who want to get away from the campus for a little break. Maybe get lost in the world of a novel bought from one of those many book shacks lining College Street or scribble away musings in the heart of a notebook, sitting by an old painting on the second floor. The coffee and kobirajis of this place are worth mentioning. Taking a nice little stroll from Coffee House, just around the College Square, one is bound to come by a small door with the words PARAMOUNT written on top of it. This is the place where all kinds of sherbets lie to soothe one’s thirst. Lassis, Mango Delights, Blue Lagoons, you name it! It’s like an oasis in a desert on a hot summer afternoon. A little away from Paramount, towards the campuses of Calcutta University and Calcutta Medical College, lie Puntiram, Mouchak and Zeeshan. While Mouchak is famous for its sweet dishes of all kinds and Puntiram for its Kochuri, Zeeshan is a local hotspot for roll and Biriyani lovers- me being one of them. Turning left on the lane leading out from Zeeshan, stands The Food Station. Its outer appearance though might not be as alluring as compared to its inner décor (the reason it’s quite easy to walk by the place without noticing it), the food there is awesome. With the walls, table mats, menu books decorated with graffiti paintings, visually depicting the daily life of Calcuttans, the place is a treat for the eye as well. The Food Station however is a proper restaurant, offering Chinese, Continental and Indian cuisine which come at a reasonable price. The desserts here are great especially the Brownie with Ice-cream. Are you lost in your mind now imagining how that kochuri of Puntiram’s would arouse your taste-buds? Or are you wandering through the lanes of College Street in your head looking for that oasis called Paramount? Well whatever food your tongue might be fantasizing about, the tasty eateries of College Street don’t quite stop here. Aren’t you forgetting those local dal-bora vendors, the phuchka walas, the achaar walas and the ice-cream walas whom your eyes follow whenever you pass them? Surely they are not small fries. Let’s give them the
9
attention they deserve! Besides, amidst the omnipresent yells of “O didi kon boita lagbe bolun?”, “Kar lekha? Ektu daran, ekhuni ene dichi”, the sights of the mute gol-gappa walas and chat walas standing there with their stock of goodies are a rare delicacy for the light-snackers in us. Bidita Ghosh

Add a bit of oil to a deep, heavy-bottomed pot. Heat over medium high until hot and then add the chicken and brown, breaking up until crumbly and cooked through, about 5-6 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove the chicken from the pot and set aside. Add the onion, garlic, red pepper, carrot, celery, and spices to the pot and cook, stirring occasionally until soft, about 5-7 minutes. Add the chicken and the tomatoes back in, crushing the tomatoes with the back of a spoon. Turn down the heat and let simmer until thick, stirring occasionally, 30-40 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Use a 3 inch cookie cutter to cut rounds out of the tortillas. Save the tortilla scraps to make chips with. Push the tortilla rounds into a mini muffin tin and bake until slightly golden and crisp, 5-7 minutes. Let cool in the tin and remove carefully. Fill the cups with chili and top with shredded cheddar, avocado, green onions and a squeeze of Daisy Sour cream. Enjoy! FROM PAGE 04
The symptoms of different disorders are overlapping. Let’s make things more interesting with the help of a case study”Margaret, a prominent businesswoman in her late forties, noted for her energy and productivity was unexpectedly deserted by her husband for a younger woman. Following her initial shock and rage, she began to weep uncontrollably and started doubting her business acumen. Decision making became an ordeal. Her spirits sank and she began to spend more time in bed. Her alcohol consumption increased though she was entirely sober earlier. Within a period of weeks, she suffered financial losses owing to her inability. She felt she was a ‘total failure’ even when reminded of her considerable personal and professional achievements. Her self criticism gradually spread to all aspects of her life.” The relative degree of impairment and duration which might be acute, chronic or intermittent is supposed to be taken seriously instead of ignoring the problem. After all ignorance is not always blissful.

Maturity in music and opinions strikingly registered this album as memorable one. SPORTS TEENAGE SPORTS MUTABILITY ‘Surely the Second Coming is at hand./…And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,/Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?’(The Second Coming-W.B.Yeats) “I know not the exact day nor hour of the second coming…or twenty four other world events.” The focus,is sure,to have shifted, the camera angle,to be precise,is tilted and what we the masses view is the less basic part, but rather we emphasize more on the ancillaries. A.A general statement,of course, this might fill any reader’s mind with a wide spectrum of ideas as to where the writer wants to hit the nail, but lets not dwell on superficial finery but rather boil down the town to the base level! In a world, quite black and white,West Bengal or rather India still suffering from the newly born Universal Sufferage or rather any political upheaval caused by Nehru’s ‘Second Five Year Plan’,any news of a new Test Series being planned would surely sent ripples in the hearts of those tons and tons of sport lovers who would wait with anguished breaths, behind the ticket counters of the then Braborne of Bombay or our own Eden, while others with arduous patience would make the radio signal at bay to listen to Richie Benaud’s very exclusive ‘Cricket muted for once!’.Time moved on with its own spirited eloquence and the period arrived for fat-ended televisions, when colonies would uproot themselves only to make themselves comfortable at the drawing rooms of those beholders of the televisions. The breath would go up and down at once, the heart beat would skip at every move, the nerves would flicker like the flames of the candelabra
14
as matches would re-unite all,Hindu-Muslim all alike. Lets forward the scenario, cut to 2015,youngsters wearing Henley’s and wasting bucks after “Did you manage to make ends meet?” the 16th century incepted ‘Coffee Shop Culture’ are interested more in the link-ups,break-ups or the endorsed brands rather than the forward short leg fielder who awaits like a hungry prey seeking the life of the one who is protecting his stumps.Technology brought ends meet,it made distance nulled, surely what the religious sophisters would believe to be a blessing of the ‘Second Coming’!It really was but what it could not do was that it failed to imbibe the stability of the heart pumps that once would stop when the red cherry would hit the pads of the Master-Blaster. ‘I’ll pour yours out as well Dear – I know that you won’t be long.’ Blooming love among cricketers has always been a curse for those couples and obscenaries have been presented to them like showering garlands, may that lead to Pataudi Saab’s “chup chupke milna” with Sharmila Ji,or rather Imran Khan’s myriad amorous tales with his tagged T-Shirt prophecising ‘Big Boys play at night’ orrather Anuska Sharma’s respect beibg beaten to the pulp at Virat’s failure. What runs ominous in these events and what concurs and collides,over-laps and over-runs is the mere ‘FOCUSING’ more on private lives rather than one’s mistake on playing a perfect cover drive or rather one’s misplaced yorker turned full-toss! Test stands at Mohali to Nagpur sport meager crowd, but Kohli’s ‘WROGN’ fashioned shirts mirror rapidly rising sales.Even the ‘Mecca of Cricket’ Eden Gardens which would sport a full crowd on a day when India’s defeat is confirmed in the first half of the day in itself presently puts forward a dismal picture of post-climactic sex organ. The evergreen wordings of great players like Rohon Kanai,Sobers ‘Give me an hour at the Eden Gardens so that I can late-cut Bedi for a boundary and the crowd would go berserk!’,stand floating, waste less in this misty wintry afternoon. Yeats did say of a ‘rough beast’ which ‘slouches’ its way,the beast is of an unknown ignorance where the people are more interested in ‘Dada, score ta ki?’ rather than patiently pausing for six balls, the ‘beast’ is of a waste less imprudence where youngsters are more attracted towards sporting team jersey’s wasting four thousand bucks rather than perfectly observing a perfect leg glance, the ‘beast’ is of the masses giving greater importance in ‘fashion rather than function!’
