Truckers and the rest of the transportation industry have a long history of supporting their communities with fundraisers of various types. Congratulations to all the participants of the Chrome for Kids fundraiser held at Mission Raceways August 8-9. Cherie Spence from the Children’s Hospital tells us that a total of $75,000.00 was raised at the event. She said they were absolutely thrilled with the money and although not sure exactly John White what machine it would be used for, it will definitely be used to purchase equipment for the cardiology department. This year Alberta Big Rig Weekend was both interesting and awesome. We were swamped with trucks Friday night, parking well over double the normal number for a Friday. Then in the middle of the night a typical Red Deer storm moved in with heavy rain and wind. The next morning the wind had died down but the rain continued sporadically until early Saturday afternoon. After that it cleared and turned into a great show – many saying the best Alberta Show ever. The Best Lights competition was fantastic but then something very special happened. We noticed a slight glow to the north that soon turned into spectacular colours dancing across the sky. Brad Demelo, our photographer, realizing it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, grabbed his camera and over the next hour or so, took some amazing shots of the northern lights with trucks in the foreground. You can see many of those pictures in this issue. It is not often that we have a problem deciding which cover shot to use but not only did we have the northern lights pictures, we also had some other very special shots to consider. Alicia Cornish, daughter of Dean Cornish, (truck on page 31) approached Ben Proudley wanting to recreate a picture after the show that she had seen on a Facebook page. When Ben and Alicia let it be known what they wanted to do they ended up with 37 trucks in the adjacent parking lot. Not being able to agree on which picture to use on our cover, Tori came up with the idea of putting them on our Facebook page to let our readers decide. We had a great response and a clear winner. The 2nd place picture is on page 24. You can see many other great pictures in this issue, on our website, and on Alicia’s Facebook page: DieZel Photography. We would like to say a special thank you to all the drivers and companies who came out to our Big Rig Weekends as well as to the many other truck shows that were held across Western Canada this year. You do not have to drive a customized truck - when any clean and polished truck is seen on the highway it raises the esteem of all truckers in the eyes of the public.

LETTERS to the EDITOR

Greetings John, I got wind of a story that you ran recently about a driver who was given a warning for using load bars to keep e Whit John agazine his load secure. All I know is third or fourth hand, so I M cker u r T may have some of the facts backwards. I hear the driver Pro John White agazine was issued some sort of warning in Alberta regarding Pro-Trucker M load locks. It sort of appears that the inspector didn’t like the idea of using them instead of proper load straps like E-track or something. Could you enlighten me on this? It might be a question to raise at the CVSA Public Forum on Cargo Securement. Hi John, I found your editorial about ratcheting rubber footed Hope you’re well, load lock bars quite interesting. I contacted our TW Jim Park branch in Calgary and they say they haven’t heard themselves or from any customers about the banning of this Editor’s note: These are just a few of the dozen or so emails I received concerning my editorial about how the type of load securement device in Alberta. Hi John, I just got the August issue. I see you kindly printed a letter from a likeminded fella in Saskatchewan concerning undercutting of rates. I’m curious to know if you got many letters from people who openly want to cheer for chopping rates,... and sign their name. Lol !! I am right in middle of moving and was planning on just leaving the work truck parked until rates improve but now I’ve got a deal with a guy who’s never hauled shacks that wants to buy the truck! Wow ! And he is going to work for one of the outfits that are taking whatever $$ they can get. Unreal! One of the guys there asked me, “Now what are you going to do, sit at home and write letters??” Ha ha ha ! And he’s one of these guys that says he’s doing what he

has to in order to support his family. Well that was fine for my dad to say, with his grade 5 education, but this guy has grade 12, and drove for other companies before he bought his own truck. So he KNEW better. As you pointed out about my last letter, lots of guys get into trucking without the benefit of having parents to follow into this racket. They also they jump all over the place looking for greener grass. But how many of them take the time to talk to people in the line of trucking their looking at to find out where the bottom line is,.. BEFORE they, “Give ‘er a whirl”? Not enough of them. That’s why rates suck.. For me the good old days are a long way back in the mirror so I think from here on out, it’ll be one Hayes

truck for me. Anyway good luck in Red Deer man. Trevor Cameron Editor’s note: The competition is definitely heating up as the large influx of people from the oil fields snap up any job they can to, “hold them over until things open up.” Many of the specialty jobs are not as simple or as cut and dried as they seem but there are always people who think they can do a job cheaper. Rates often suffer at times like this until simple mathematics thins the herd. On the bright side there will always be a demand for drivers who know what their costs are as they are the ones that companies can depend on to be around when they need them.

Missed it by a Mile For the past two summers my holidays have consisted of me hopping on my motorcycle and riding below the 49th parallel. Riding is my way of clearing my head of life’s worries and recharging the batteries at the same time. This summer, like last, I rode through five States, and short of some minor differences they all afforded some form of barren wasteland and stunningly beautiful landscapes. They also offered the very pungent aroma of skunk, something not enjoyed in most of Western Canada. There were winding rivers, meandering streams, mountains and endless fields, beautiful orange sunsets and eye shielding sunrises. There were euphoric moments as I just simply followed the endless black ribbon and gazed at the world before me. Like that third time you open the fridge looking for the mustard I noticed something that was so blatantly obvious I

almost missed it. It has been nearly two decades since I have trucked down south in the United States and I had forgotten how well they cater to their trucking industry. I’m not referring to the magnificent condition of most of the highways, their weather is nowhere near as severe as ours, but to the infrastructure provided for off duty time. Nearly every rest area had bathroom facilities and every one had more than enough room for a minimum of five tractor trailers with some accommodating as many as twenty-five. There were no tell-tale one hundred foot long skid marks leading off the road into a pothole filled unlit gravel pull out. There were no trailers parked dangerously close to the shoulder because there was not quite enough room for both trucks. Each pull out was marked

well in advance so that a driver could ease off the road without losing 100 miles of tire life. If a driver wished he could park at a truck stop, which generally would come with a fee in the urban areas. At no time however is the onus put on the private business to house the trucker and his rig. All of which is exactly the opposite of trucking in Western Canada. Granted our private business owners have recognized the requirements of truckers and have gone to some great lengths to improve their truck stops. All of which our drivers appreciate. However, when it comes to providing adequate well marked truck parking with appropriate washroom facilities our provincial governments have missed it by a mile.

Most drivers do not even think of it at all, let alone as a dangerous activity. It is just a part of the job. Most driver training focuses on avoiding motor vehicle accidents, and rightly so. Even a minor accident is expensive and the human costs can be fatal. The business of trucking is about logging miles and every mile provides a chance for an accident. So with enough miles you will need to call on your professionalism to avoid an accident. However, you are more likely to be injured by working around your truck than you are by being in it. worried about the embarrassment, because the result is just a sprained muscle or a skinned knee. But I have seen these “little” accidents result in serious injuries and even the ‘little’ injuries can keep you from making a truck payment. My friend had been an owner operator for years, driving long haul team with his brother. They worked hard and saved for 10 years and started their own trucking company. Eight years later, with a 15 truck fleet he was never in a truck any more. Then one day a driver was sick and another broke down. He decided to slip into the driver seat and make a single important local delivery. That night, after working all day in the office, he went to hook onto the load. The trailer was dropped a little low.

He had to crank the loaded trailer up a little. To use that much force on the dolly crank he had to get his weight behind it. The fact that he was still in his office shoes did not help. As he muscled the dolly crank it slipped from his hand and the handle kicked back. Something many of us have experienced with no real consequence. But in this case, the dolly handle caught him in the eye. You can imagine what he went through in the yard alone at night to get help. Despite two operations over the next three months, he eventually lost his eye. Another guy I used to work with was cranking dollies in a yard in Winnipeg in winter. There was compacted snow on the ground. His struggle with the dolly crank caused him to lose his footing. As he fell he hit his head on the trailer parked beside him and lost consciousness. He was found, almost frozen to death by another driver. The resultant brain injury ended his driving career and changed his life. These people and their stories are real. I’m not trying to frighten anyone, only to show that the dangers are real and countermeasures, that may seem silly, are necessary when you see the whole picture. Dolly related injuries are not always this serious, but muscle strain, and back injuries should not be dismissed as unimportant. Here are some ways to be safer with this part of your job. First, avoid cranking dollies, especially to move the load up and down. Dollies crank so that they move up and

down, not so that they can move a loaded trailer up and down. Much of the work of the crank can and should be done by your tractors air suspension. When unhooking, crank the dollies down until they are firm. Then you can lower your tractor suspension and pull out. Do the opposite when hooking up to a trailer. Second, make the cranking as easy as you can for your body. If trailers are close together, raise the dollies only enough so that you can pull out of the trailer line up far enough for easy access to the crank. Make sure you have firm footing and traction. Keep your body (especially your head) out of the line of fire should the dolly handle slip or kickback. When driving, we know to rehearse ‘what if’ scenarios in in our head in order to have a plan for the unexpected. We ask questions like ‘what if that car changes lanes in front of me?’. That allows us to prepare for the unexpected by slowing down or at least moving our foot to the brake petal. When cranking dollies or doing other jobs around your truck, the same technique can be used. Ask yourself if the crank handle slips, where will the force move your body, what part of your body will be hit and where will it hit. We don’t need to dwell on these thoughts, but like holding the handrail loosely when going down stairs, it cost little but is invaluable when actually needed. When cranking dollies, let the truck do the hard work and you can finesse the easy stuff as safely as possible.

During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, “How do you determine whether or not it is time for an older person to be put in an old age home?” “Well,” he said, “It is not that hard. We give them a fairly easy test and evaluate them by their answer. First we fill up a bathtub with water and then offer the person a teaspoon, a teacup or a bucket and ask them to empty the bathtub.” “Oh, I understand,” I said. “A normal person would use the bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or the teacup.” “No,” he said. “A normal person would pull the plug. Reflections Thru My Windshield By Dave Madill Dave was Pro-Trucker Magazine’s Rig of the Month in June of 2001

Wet Puppy

Spring had sprung and I was out on the highway relishing the good weather. I dropped off my load Friday morning and since there was nothing else in the area I headed over to a little mom and pop truck stop that I knew about and settled in to wait for Monday when I could look for a load. It rained all night Friday but the sound of rain on my sleeper put me right to sleep and Saturday morning I hopped out of the bunk and went in for breakfast. It was a typical old diner where you ended up mixed in with all the locals. The food and conversation were great but I have to admit that I was a little concerned when they started talking about flooding. When I voiced my concern I was told not to worry as the area had not been flooded since back in the old days before the big culvert was put in under the highway. (Later I got a look at what they called a big culvert – it was only an eight footer.)

EMAIL: truckwest@shaw.ca WEBSITE: truckwestcollision.com Saturday passed quickly what with all the stories being told and watching the TV sitting in the corner. Andy and Opie were up to par and the night was great. I got back to the truck about 10:30 pm and crawled into the bunk and man by this time the rain on the roof was really coming down but it didn’t bother me and I drifted right off to sleep. I was right in the middle of a great dream when someone started pounding on the door of my truck. I slowly stuck my head out of the sleeper to see a flashlight in my driver’s window and what looked to be a Sheriff’s Deputy pounding on my door. The funny thing was his head was just above the top of my window. “What the heck?” I thought. I pulled on my jeans, crawled out of the bunk and rolled the window down to find that he was standing in a rowboat and the water was almost to the top of my tanks. He wanted to ferry me back to the highway right away but I figured my old Bulldog could make it out on its own so I told him to stand clear and hit the starter. I was right as my old puppy fired right away and as soon as I had air I jammed her in gear and headed for the highway entrance paying little attention to the yelling of the Deputy. What I forgot to take into consideration is that the parking lot sloped downhill towards the highway and by the time I got to the entrance I had water running in under my door and I was pushing quite a bow wave but my old girl never sputtered once and I kept the revs up and kept the wheel steady. I hit the entrance ramp and

kept going out. By the time I got there I had six inches of water in the cab. I was told later by witnesses that it looked like a monster rising from the deep. I got myself parked on the shoulder of the highway and stood and watched as a couple other trucks drove out and several other drivers were rescued from trucks that had shorted out and would not start. Checked with the Officers and found out that debris had blocked the Big Culvert and had acted like a dam. About daylight the rising water finally overflowed the highway and busted the culvert loose and the water abated and we able to see the damage caused. Seven trucks had not made it out of the lot. The drivers had but the water had come up to the roofs of the conventionals and everything was dirtier than a hog wallow. As for the truck stop – it was totaled. I managed to get to the next town where I pulled into a truck dealership and had all my fluids replaced and my tanks drained. Luckily I was back on the road Tuesday but several of the trucks that were flooded had to be scrapped because they were unable to clean up the rust inside the engines, trannies and rear ends. I went back about a year later and the truck stop had been rebuilt and a new bridge put in to replace the culvert. They had also raised the parking lot and building site by about ten feet so it was actually above the level of the highway. I never thought I would ever have to drive through that much water but as they say – That’s Trucking.

Homicide

Two police officers responding to a domestic disturbance with shots fired arrive on scene. After discovering the wife had shot her husband for walking across her freshly mopped floor, they call their sergeant on his cell phone. “Hello Sarge.” “Yes.” “It looks like we have a homicide here.“ “What happened?” “A woman has shot her husband for walking on the floor she had just mopped.” “Have you placed her under arrest?” “No sir. The floor is still wet.“

PRO-TRUCKER MAGAZINEe

July 7 & 8 2001 we held the first BC Big Rig Weekend. That year proud drivers brought out 97 trucks to show off to the world. We were thrilled because it was 3 trucks more than the Mid America show in Louisville Kentucky managed to attract that year. This caused quite a stir among Big Rig Show and Shine enthusiasts in Western Canada because there had not been a show of this size since Calgary’s 18 Wheeler Weekend had shut down a few years prior. After reading of the event in our August ’01 issue, a fellow from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan mailed me a picture of a gorgeous 1959 B51 model Mack. It was incredible. The letter accompanying the picture said that the truck was from Saskatchewan but he gave no further information concerning who owned it or where it was. He didn’t even leave me his phone number so that I could contact him. I called Gord Cooper in Calgary, and he told me that he thought the owner lived in Saskatoon. I finally contacted the owner and convinced him (not that it took a lot of convincing) to bring his truck out to the 2nd Annual BC Big Rig Weekend in 2002. That is when I had the privilege of meeting Andy and Irene Zary, their daughter Laura, and granddaughter, Ebonie. It was to be the first of many such meetings over the years. They did not attend all our shows, as they travelled to many different ones across North America, but I always looked forward to seeing them. Andy on the other hand

SEPTEMBER 2015

always did his best to surprise me. He would often try to sneak into town and try to park his Mack somewhere out of sight but inevitably someone would see it (who could miss it) and I would soon get a call saying, “Andy and Irene are in town,” or “I just saw Andy’s truck in Revelstoke, looks like he’s heading for the show.” Andy and Irene started showing the truck in 2000 and over the years the truck has earned well over 100 trophies, taking 1st place all across North America. Andy proudly confided in me a couple years back that one of the biggest competitors in the U.S. finally told him that when he saw Andy pull in to a show he resigned himself to the fact that the best he could do was 2nd place. One of the things that I enjoyed doing over the years was to try a find what had changed from the year before because there was always something different. In Andy’s mind it was always a work in progress. He would get an idea, work on it over the winter and then start all over again. Tragically Irene passed away March 16, 2009 and Andy of course was devastated. Andy kept showing the truck up until last year – I’m sure, in Irene’s memory – but he now says he has finally done enough polishing and has decided to sell the Mack. Hopefully this truck will find a home in a collection where it will be kept in the pristine condition it is accustomed to and brought out now and then to show the world what a real show truck, and labour of love, looks like. r

Tyres Across The Pond Colin Black lives in Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland and has been driving truck for over 40 years. His story shows us once again that the problems drivers face are universal.

Theft

A wee line in Dave Madill’s story in the Pro-Trucker July issue got me thinking, he was having a less than perfect start to his shift and just to put the tin hat on it, a selfish driver had helped himself to half the bungees off the trailer he was taking. But worse than that the trailer had two flat tyres. Why do “drivers” do that? Would they like it if it happened to them? My guess is they would be raging. But I suppose that’s human nature with some people, it’s the path of least resistance, e.g. I’ve no time to get tyres repaired, someone else will do it, I’m missing some bungees for my next trailer, so the next guy who picks up this trailer can sort out the missing ones. I like to take pride in the fact that when I drop a trailer any driver can pick it up and go to work after a quick check. But, sad to say, the whole world over, the industry is riddled with drivers whose professional attitude and thought for their fellow man leaves a lot to be desired. Back in the old days when I was dropping a trailer I

couldn’t leave anything on it that wasn’t nailed down. I always had a box in the cab where the lights were stored, all lenses and bulbs had to be removed every time, well, at least if I wanted to have lights on the trailer when I came back for it. We never used bungees on our trailers back then, everything was tied down with rope, and ratchet straps were still in the future as a quick and easy load restraint. I did slip up once though, I was running loads of preformed steel for a coal terminal that was being built on the Firth of Clyde at a place called Hunterston. The first few loads had gone ok until one day I got there a little too late to get unloaded. Rather than haul the loaded trailer round the twisting narrow coastal roads back to the depot, the security man said I could drop the trailer off to the side near his cabin. I went through my usual routine and took all the lenses and bulbs off the trailer, but I thought it was better to leave the chains securing the load to the trailer, just in case things moved in the wind. I bobtailed down the next day to find all my chains and what we call, dwangs, an over centre tensioner for the chains, were all gone. The security man had seen nothing, or so he said. As the load was about eight feet high, and with nothing holding the steel sections to the trailer, it was a very cautious drive down the length of the long, rough site to get unloaded.

Even to this day I can’t understand the mentality of drivers who can do that to fellow drivers. Running nightshift for the last few years I’ve had to share my truck with a dayshift driver and it’s always a big bonus if you get paired with a day man who’s as clean and tidy as yourself. I’m not a smoker, so the smell of stale smoke in the cab really bugs me. There have been times when I’ve ran with both cab windows down to try and cleanse the cab of the smell. And to keep the smell off my hands I’ve kept some disposable gloves in my bag so my hands didn’t stink when I ate my mid-shift sandwiches. Even the threat of losing their job wasn’t enough of a deterrent for some hardened nicotine addicts. A few years ago the company lost some contracts and was looking to shed some drivers to keep the wage bill down. The no smoking law had been in place for a while so it was like shooting fish in a barrel, when the known smokers came back at the end of their shift a supervisor checked the cab. If the signs were there it was instant dismissal. This was an easy way for the company to get rid of any drivers who didn’t come up to their standards, and save themselves paying redundancy money at the same time. *****

Thought for the day.

Everyone has a right to be stupid. Politicians just abuse the privilege.

From the Patch By Tamara Weston

It’s coming…

CANYON CABLE 1988 LTD.

With the summer drawing to a close, the days are getting noticeably shorter and the nights are getting longer. The northern lights come out to dance quite often now as I drive up and down Hwy 63 and the light show some nights can be pretty spectacular. This summer just seemed to fly by for me, between getting our son to race days and a family vacation, I turned around and in a blink of an eye it was over. Our son Remi just turned 16 and has been racing motocross since he was 12. I raced motocross back in 2000 and 2001 and Eric also raced back in the day so Remi comes by it honestly. He entered his first two races in 2013 and then two more last year but this year he really opened it up and did very well. He raced all over Alberta and Saskatchewan and came in 5th overall in the province of Alberta. He has a dream of becoming a professional motocross rider and, if he keeps improving as fast as he has been, there is a good chance he will

achieve that goal. We only have a few short months of nice weather here in Alberta and it seems only a few days of fall before Old Man Winter rears his ugly head. I’ve noticed these past few days as Eric and I head up and down the highway that our conversations have changed from summer things and are now more focussed on tires and making sure we have chains and hangers on both our trucks. It’s that time I suppose to get geared up so that when the old man does arrive we are prepared. I don’t ever want to be the driver who waited just one more month before getting those tires or “I’ll grab those chains next time” and end up in a situation. I believe that when it comes to this job it’s better to be safe than sorry. I’ve thrown on triple chains

“just in case” on more than one occasion and have never ever regretted it. Having good winter tires during an Alberta winter is a high priority for us. My first winter hauling trains I was in a 2012 Peterbilt, 48inch bunk with a short wheel base. Eric and I were hauling from Valley View to Redwater and travelled mostly on Hwy 43. There are a few hard pulls and Eric was lead truck. We came down the north side in traffic making our way to the biggest pull. Eric pulled out to the hammer lane but before I had a chance, I was boxed in the slow lane. Next thing I knew there were brake lights everywhere ahead of me and I was stopped at the bottom of iusgon hill. It was the middle of the night, I was loaded, and on top of that it was minus 20. As soon as I had a chance I pulled into the hammer lane in bull low and slowly but surely made it up the hill. All the while listening to the voice in my head telling me don’t spin your tires; use the torque to your advantage; listen to your truck. All the things Eric had told me over and over. When I crested the hill Eric was waiting and of course very relieved that I had made it. I know having good tires saved my bacon that night as did having Eric in my back pocket with his 25+years of driving experience. Having Eric close by with all his experience has made it much easier for me to do this job. Many times he had to learn the hard way as he didn’t always have someone to rely on like I do.

The Last Real Cowboy

PRO-TRUCKER MAGAZINEe

A quiet little barroom in a little nameless town Nowhere to go and time to kill, I suck a cold beer down An old cowpoke ambles in the door and slowly looks around, There’s just the bartender and me, so he says, “I’ll buy a round.” He saunters slowly across the floor, both bowlegged and pigeon-toed, His legs still hold a memory of every horse he rode. I thank him kindly for the beer as he sits down at the bar He asks about my rig outside, and have I come very far; We sit and talk for hours and he tells me about the range He tells me about the cowboy life and the many things that have changed. He says there are no real cowboys now, riding for the brand He talks about the life he had and makes it sound so grand. He talks about the dusty trails and about some barroom fights About rounding up the cattle and riding herd all night. He tells me about the rustlers and his old Colt forty-four, Now it hangs on a wall at home, he don’t pack a gun no more. I told him about the trucking life and the long, lonely roads The many places I have been and the many heavy loads. Finally he got up to leave, and I stood to have my say, I said. “There is one real cowboy left, I just met him today.” He slowly turned and looked at me, grinned and shook my hand, Said, “I’d be proud to have a man like you working for our brand.” Now I’ve been back there many times, across that old barroom floor, I never met my friend again; he doesn’t come there anymore. You see, he’s up there riding on the big range in the sky, Now there are no real cowboys left, the last of them has died.
