WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBAL CHANGES

“PRO.SVIT” IN 2016 OUR SUCCESS AND STORIES OF CHANGE

T

he passed year has been quite challenging for the Center for Innovative Education “Pro.Svit”. Education is becoming more topical issue, society begins to deeply understand its role and importance, however the search for effective tools for a change is complicated by the global crisis of education. The other countries are also in the process of finding solutions. Finland, which seems to be one of the most progressive countries in Europe in terms of educational changes, has been losing its ground since 2006. The USA has already lost the leadership and according to the latest PISA test in 2015 took 31 place. This country can afford the assessment of teachers at the cost of $1 billion, but still doubts whether it is effective and continue looking for alternative and less expensive approaches. Taking a broader context — the current situation in the world is arduous. It is difficult to set priorities and find in this stream of urgent cases a place for educational reform. When there is a war (Donbass, Syria and other flashpoints), firstly we extinguish especially big fire. But we must find time for small one as well. At “Pro.Svit” we strive to make Ukraine an important player in the international educational environment. In particular, this is our role. That is why we test various tools, analyze our own

6

experience and study the international one. Currently, our focus is a teacher itself and a school as a community life center (for parents, children, teachers). We see the school as an open organization where a person, overcoming the limitations, reveals itself. This is not easy. It requires rethinking of the role of teachers, pupils and parents. Although Ukraine had lagged behind the world, and we are beginning the way the others had already finished, as a country we strive for offering our solutions. It took two years for “Pro.Svit” to clearly realize our role. And we still do not have all the answers. But we have enthusiasm to work harder and move on – what Exupéry called the basis of any work :) In 2016 we have conducted a program in four cities of Ukraine (Lviv, Odesa,Vinnytsia, Sloviansk) and have involved 105 participants, what included about 40 schools. Today the alumni network of “Pro.Svit” comprises 135 educators. Another important task is to develop working environment with alumni and to form nucleus of change in their schools, as we understand that for one person to do the impact is much harder than for a community. Apart from that, we will continue development of crowdfunding GoFundEd platform, which in less than 9 months of work had proved its efficiency and effectiveness. By now there were 14 projects implemented on the platform,

WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBAL CHANGES

“PRO.SVIT” IN 2016 OUR SUCCESS AND STORIES OF CHANGE

more than $20,000 were gathered for the needs of projects. For us GoFundEd platform is an opportunity to raise the status of teachers, to attract the attention of society to a change and cooperation, to shape our model of social entrepreneurship. In 2016 GoFundEd should become a service for implementation of changes in education from low links on top. Who knows, maybe this is the product that will be released far beyond Ukrainian borders :) Our strong side is the design of participants’ learning experience, the analysis of their needs and varied formats of education offers, that will help them to open up. “Pro.Svit” is an organization

WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBAL CHANGES

that continuously develops and this is our big opportunity. But this is not enough for 2017. We strive for more: a clearer focus, better effects, better decisions and greater scale. That is why in 2017, drawing on the experience of 2016 year, we will “dig deeper”: into problems in schools, into tools and solutions. It is important to focus, regionally as well as on our straight plans. Still, we leave room for experiments, in particular for our model of stability. We hope this alchemy will give the results.

Moving forward :) Yuliya Barannikova

In the modern world “without borders”, with extraordinary technological capabilities of today, Ukrainians from around the world, regardless of where they live and what they do, can support positive changes in Ukraine. Nadiya Varhola, Сhairman of “Pro.Svit” Supervisory Board

“PRO.SVIT” IN 2016 OUR SUCCESS AND STORIES OF CHANGE

2016 was the first working year of Supervisory Board of the Center for Innovative Education “Pro.Svit”. Looking back, I see that the organization has made a great progress in its development. To begin with, “Pro.Svit” was broadened to the national level. This is confirmed by conduction programs for teachers not only in Lviv but also in three other cities of Ukraine; conduction programs for teachers of supporting schools with the support of the Ministry of Education and the Western NIS Enterprise Fund; the involvement of the organisation into public discussion of the concept of the New Ukrainian School; launch and successful work performance of GoFundEd crowdfunding platform to finance educational projects throughout Ukraine. Dozens of articles and reviews about “Pro.Svit” or produced by “Pro.Svit” team in the national media. This is what lies on the surface. If we look deeper, we see a great work of the team and a lot of small improvements inside the organization working process: more effective organizational structure, strategic planning and a clearer division of responsibilities and goals for organizational team, attraction of new team members, diversification of funding sources, review of best international practices, and above all, the desire of the team to grow and develop. Furthermore, we came to the conclusion that the development of education can be very effectively integrated by advice and knowledge of business people. How it would be better to structure financial policies, how to organize

WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBAL CHANGES

strategic planning, how to widen a new initiatives into broader scale and make them long-term sustainable? These are the questions in which we, the members of the Supervisory Board, tried to support “Pro.Svit” team, relying on our years of experience in international companies, beyond our statutory control function. Thirdly, we ensured that in the modern world “without borders”, with extraordinary technological capabilities of today, Ukrainians from around the world, regardless of where they live and what they do, can support positive changes in Ukraine. Wherever you are, you can share your expertise, contacts, knowledge, ideas, resources, supporting those extraordinary people who today in Ukraine build modern, democratic state with educated, responsible and proactive citizens. For me personally, for the members of the Supervisory Board, and I am sure, for many other people who support “Pro. Svit” or many other NGOs in different ways — it is an honor to make our small contribution to this process.

E

ducational program “Pro.Skills” became our first product for educators. We reached this through our experience working with 10-13 years old children, the experience of other countries, ongoing reflection and search. Realizing the challenges the education is encountering today, we endeavored to offer an alternative way of professional development for teachers, because a teacher is the major creator of all reforms.

We understand that we can not change people. Especially people who have been grown in the Soviet context. But we believe the key to this process is the willingness of people to work. This is what the program is aimed for — to give impetus to qualitatively different work of teachers over themselves, as a professional of his craft; qualitatively different working process in the classroom in order to change the interaction with the student.

The mission of the program: To strengthen a teacher in his\her impact on the future of the country; Prepare teacher to the reforms, which will be implemented by him\her (the formation of an independent program of the lesson, usage of the competency approach); Formation of a system of schools, teachers and principals, which will be the basis for the New Ukrainian School.

Odesa School as a social enterprise Iryna Soltanova and Oleksandra Velychko — English teacher and principal of Starotsarychanska school, BilhorodDnistrovskyi region. During “Pro.Skills” program the teachers have been working on the project of opening sewing class at the school. On these classes the students will study fashion design, embroidery, cutting and sewing. By September 2017 it is planned to implement on the basis of this sewing class a educational and production course of design and manufacture of clothing. This project includes additional training module for children as well as social enterprise, since the clothes will be on sell. The development course of palliative care Larysa Naperkovska — a teacher of General Care in Odesa Regional Basic Medical College. During the program Larysa worked on a project to train nurses to provide palliative care (help to terminally ill). The main focus of training is to make people’s lives more intense and interesting. The special relevance of the project is

that at national level there is no training of nurses, who would provide palliative care, what means such kind of project will be the first in Ukraine.

Science Hub in school Olena Druzyak — Mathematics teacher of “Mriya” private school, Odesa Works on the project of creation of Science Hub at her school. It is a laboratory for the study of STEM-subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology). In this space the students will be able to reinforce the theoretical knowledge on practical scientific experiments. Olena also synchronizes program of mathematical subjects so that students can easily apply this knowledge in other sciences — Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Vinnytsia Valentyna Harnyk — teacher of Ukrainian Language and Literature at School №1 in Vinnytsia. Valentyna is working on the introduction of rotational model of learning in her lessons. Besides, she had also implemented her idea to transform the classroom to provide working flexibility in the laboratories. Valentyna named the room in an unusual way — “Shkvarka-room”. Valentyna is also working on a project “ZiR”, which aims at training

Halyna implements blended learning on her subjects in elementary “Radosvit” school and during “Pro.Skills” in parallel has worked on school business model. Halyna is a teacher and her big challenge is to set goals to attract children and teachers into the school, to manage budget, and work on a strategic plan for the school. However, she succeeds. Step by step, she overcomes those challenges and structures school activity more and more. Also Halyna has submitted her idea to crowdfunding GoFundEd platform, to raise the necessary funds for equipment.

In response to the question “The three main conclusions from the program” we got these most repeated answers: The importance of properly set goals and activities planning. For example, quotes from participants feedback forms: “To plan the project — is only a small piece of work”, “I learned to use SMART-technology in formulating goals and break the project into separate phases”; About the lessons in a new way: “The technology can be included into educational process”, “blended learning”,

24

“introduction of blended learning during the lessons”, “the Internet — that’s cool”; About the teacher’s role, “started thinking about the role of the teacher as a creator, not a translator”, “changed perception of myself as a teacher, of children (we became co-authors, co-organisers)”; About the Budget: “there are money”, “people want to fund interesting (!) projects”, “there are people willing to give their money to education”

Amon answers of the participants there were also no repetitive, but interesting conclusions: Only if you are happy, you can teach others to live happily. Learning zone is between comfort zone and zone of panic.

I can change something, even only by myself. There are like-minded people around me.

In response to the question, “In my work I already have been using ______”, the participants dwelled upon two things: The use of blended learning in the classroom. For example, “using methodology of blended learning during school lessons”, “more frequently use group work in the classroom, reflection of my work and activities of students, along with students we keep a log of successes”, “communicate with children in social networks (send them a link to the video or text preceding the topic of the lesson — this increases the time for the practical part of the lesson”, “divide the class into groups each with separate objectives and finding information on the Internet”.

The ability to set goals. For example, “I mastered the ability to set a goal by SMART method”, “SMART goal setting”.

“The country can and must be radically changed only through effective education for children who have to change the layers of the lost generation, unable to transform society. The role of the teacher is key — not only academic, it is crucial for the development and identity formation, grafting thinking required for being a full-fledged subject of the globalized world” Rostyslav Olenchyn, Director of Acropolis Project Management Company LTD.

“The only way to change the situation in our country and become a leader among other countries is to think about changes in education for our children and future generations right now. Outdated schemes and methods had lost their relevance and do not work anymore. There is a need of fundamentally new approaches and alternative education. We are extremely grateful to the people, such as “Pro. Svit” team, who initiates the creation of these new approaches…” Maryan Savka and Igor Luzhanskyy, Neadevis Company

The School of educational innovation and management or strengthening of the reforms in education

U

kraine is now going on the way of educational reforms. They can be treated differently. But one of the key we believe is supporting schools reform, because in Ukraine 65% of schools are located in rural areas, although there is only 32% of enrolled students. Tuition per student in these schools ranges from 20 to 60 thousand UAH. However, the quality of the knowledge is uncertain, what is proved particularly by results of this year Independent external evaluation. That’s why we started with the “School of Educational Innovation and Management” for teachers and principals of 24 supporting schools. For us this is simultaneously a challenge and an opportunity. The context of these

schools is quite difficult, there is no much of coordination for these schools from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine — while they are awaiting for clear instructions. Instead, in this program we offer teachers to have a look at their role in a new way, at the tasks that they face in their classrooms. We propose principals to look at themselves not as executors, who see only the limitations, but as leaders who can propose solutions. We know that not everybody will support us in this. However, we believe that this is a normal process — there will always be resistance and opposition to the new, but will also be a critical number of people with whom implementation of the changes is easy.

Program focus

Participants about the program

F

or “Pro.Svit” it is already a common practice to collect feedback from participants and its analysis. It is important for us to understand what has changed in the

attitudes of participants, how do they strive to develop further and what will they use. In particular, within the supporting schools program, we have the following results:

1. How do you see your role in the changes that are now being

implemented to education?

Training of teachers, moral encouragement for change Manager who wants to and can be the initiator and leader of change, but has limited resources and many current challenges. a) The strategy of the school development. b) Continuous professional growth. c) A new approach to the educational process (training, various studies). The role of innovator, ready for change and cooperation with civil society organizations to strengthen the logistical base, creating comfort for gaining high-quality education The leader of change in my schools. The leader in the process of changing school culture Changes are needed and I’m an active participant of it

32

As the head of the institution, I am responsible for an important mission: to assemble a team of like-minded people, who believe that changes are needed, that they are important. The principal is the first one who should, above all, change himself, strive to self-improvement, not to be afraid of implementing new teaching methods, who experiments, and is not afraid of a change. Leader should be able to create a strong team, which will be supported by the majority, in which the children will believe in, which will be supported and respected by parents. It is not easy, as on the reform way there are many obstacles. But if the team is led by a strong principal, who knows where to go, if together they developed a plan of action, then they must succeed together. You need to be a leader in education, to take responsibility for the effective result of management decisions, because it affects the future of our children.

THE AREAS OF ACTIVITY

2. When asked what skills / understanding you have gained

during the program, the participants noted, first of all, a vision of how to further develop the school and understanding that other program participants are the partners with whom they can collaborate; and also teamwork was noted. It seems that these are remarkable conclusions for our mistrustful society.

“I want to say that only a great desire to change the learning process motivates our team. Confidence that if nothing is done, it will be even worse. Why do children in Finland go to school with pleasure, and their teachers strive to improve themselves and are adequately motivated by the state while we, unfortunately, are deprived of all of this? Why are we not supported by our department of education, why aren’t they interested in our successful projects? Despite the huge burden of routine issues, we want to change the situation, because it is a disgrace to our children who do not see the light in the tunnel and are forced to go abroad in a search of better lives. We cannot tolerate with it, we must show our children that it is possible to be realized in our country, we just need to be patient and confidently go to the purpose

THE AREAS OF ACTIVITY

(this sounds snobbish, but frankly). I am happy to become a member of your project, I analyze how had I changed, how my colleagues, elected by you, have changed. This is a very positive experience in our lives. My friends noticed that I am full of enthusiasm like 20 years ago when I crossed the threshold of the school and was full of energy, and the children did not want to let me go. With fear I am realizing the fact that the project is over, and I do not want to plunge into the gray reality again. I dream my colleagues also to feel “the flight of the soul”. I believe we can do it! Thank you very much for the new world that you have opened for us. Good luck to your team and successful development” An anonymous comment from feedback form

3. 90 % of teachers responded that they consider themselves to be a source of change and are willing to do anything that depends on them “I became more confident, learned the most effective method of teaching my subject, which changed the attitude of students in a positive direction, I ensured that my professionalism has not burnt out completely, I got a second wind, and most importantly, I returned the interest and favor of my students. This new breath has changed my attitude to further work and motivated me to work on the final result. I am infinitely grateful that you made it possible for us to talk and hear about the changes from the first-hand. Your positive impetus will give a good result. I am sure of this.”

In March 2016 was launched a pilot project Supporting schools, aimed at improving the quality of education in rural areas and the creation of updated school sample. In the process, we realized that only repair works, upgrade of laboratories and new equipment will not provide qualitative changes. Then we engaged “Pro.Svit” team to develop a special program for principals and teachers of schools. After all, the main challenge was to help teachers become mentors for the students, not just to transfer knowledge; to master new approaches to teaching, including blended learning, which have already demonstrated its effectiveness in other countries as well as in Ukraine; to attract online resources, volunteers, parents and other professionals. The principals had studied how to transit from the role of “assistant manager” to a strategist, who works on school development plan, seeks grants, partners and replicates the colleagues’ experience. The work of “Pro.Svit” team is of an extremely high quality and dedicated - during 3 months of the program, the teams from 24 schools of Ukraine (one per region) have made a big leap to a new decent school that will prepare children for the challenges of the global world».
